at Bellewstown Races – and neither did the ladies! They came in their droves in the hope of being crowned Essential Drogheda’s Best Dressed Lady – and even the punters were smiling when celebrity judge and model Georgia Salpa arrived dressed to the nines! A massive congratulations goes out to our cover girl Maura Collins who stole the show in a Fifties-inspired navy and cream ensemble. For all the glamour from the day, see pages 20 & 21. There’s no doubt Irish singer and born entertainer Dickie Rock has been around the block and back many times. On page 9, he recalls the last time he cried and why he’s no stranger to a spot of housework! The slump in the property market means more house owners are considering renting their homes instead of losing money in a sale (that’s if they can even find a buyer!). On page 29, Colin Lenahan of Nest shares his top five tips for renting. Enjoy your read

Taking the hassle out of waxing. Threading, the middle eastern method of facial hair removal is less common in the West for removing hair at the root as rows of stray hairs are literally yanked out with twists of a cotton thread. But it’s fast, neat, and easier on the skin than waxing or plucking – and results can last up to two to four weeks. For this month only, Boston Beauty Bar, Scotch Hall is offering Essential Readers 50% OFF any threading treatments. Call 041-9809274 and mention Essential now to avail of this fantastic deal!

I am Wall

Building a human wall! Join other local volunteers to form a great human town wall in the biggest ever celebration of Drogheda’s extensive medieval heritage, which is also hoped to raise much-needed funds for local charities. The event will take place on Sunday, August 21st from 11.30am to 12.30pm and will be broadcast live with up to 2,000 people expected to join in. Food for thought

Tickling your taste buds at the Drogheda Food Festival which takes place from August 12th-14th! There will be a large farmers’ market with cookery demonstrations, a roasted hog and sumptuous taster plates with yummy relishes and jams, cheeses, pastries, homemade ice creams and much more. Local cafes and restaurants will prepare special menus for the day and Drogheda’s pubs will feature a Beer Trail and a Barpersons’ Race. Go on… you know you want to!

Getting the kids doing something productive this summer! Farmer Bill needs extra scarecrows to protect his crops and children are invited to enter the competition for the scariest home-made scarecrow for Scarecrow Day at Newgrange Farm. The judges – consisting of Farmer Bill and visitors on the day – will give their verdict to the anticipated crowds between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. So dress ’em up as scarecrows and make your way to Newgrange Farm on Saturday, 20th August, 2.30pm. www. newgrangefarm.com

It’s a collection of short stories that is very light hearted and so easy to read; I dip in and out of it every now and again. I don’t read as much as I’d like to because I don’t have the time anymore. I love reading because it’s a break away from reality.’

Conor Cusack, Tullyallen ‘I’m just finished reading “Private” by James Patterson for the first time. I couldn’t put it down; it’s a thriller and a real page turner. It only took me two days to read. When I’m on holidays I love reading because I don’t have the time to read when I’m at home.’

ollowing on the great success of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association first ever Easter Fair, held in partnership with Love Irish Food, the ICA is set to host another great event in August! The ICA is again partnering with Love Irish Food to celebrate Heritage Week with a Harvest and Heritage Fair on August 27th in An Grianan, Termonfeckin. With traditional carnival games, vintage cars, heritage craft and local food producer stalls, competitions and raffles, the Harvest and Heritage Fair will have something for every member of the family! The ICA Harvest and Heritage Fair will be a great outing for the whole family – bring the kids and stay all day! For the adults and even teens, there will be stalls with crafts from our talented An Grianán mentors, from beading to embroidery to lacework. And for the kids, we’ll have bouncy castles along with traditional carnival games like our grandparents used to play! Try your hand at the coconut shy and wellie throwing to win fun prizes! Throughout the day, Love Irish Food producers will be available for you to sample products and learn about how they produce such great Irish products. There will be competitions throughout the day for children and adults, as well as a produce contest. Give us a ring if you’d like to enter your prize-winning produce – everything

Tables will be set up outside under our trees, strewn with fairy lights, so you can relax and eat your meal with your family and neighbours, listening to the live music playing in the background. For evening entertainment, the one and only Dickie Rock will be performing a live concert in An Grianán’s walled garden from 8pm, playing the favourite songs we all know to sing along, as well as hits from his new album released earlier this year. Tickets to the concert are €25 per person and they are available from An Grianán (041 982 2119), but they’re selling fast, so get yours soon! And when you buy your ticket to the concert, you get a great discount for Dickie Rock’s best-selling autobiography – only €5 with your ticket purchase! And to top off the evening, we’ll be having a fireworks display directly after the concert. What a fun way to celebrate Heritage Week with a day of activities and fun for your whole family! An Grianán is looking forward to welcoming its neighbours from the Drogheda community and around the country for a wonderful day out!

On the catwalk for summer 2011, Dior did brilliant worn with extremely blues and Loewe worked the look with lashings of ripe bright bold pieces of orange. MAC Eye-shadows in Chrome Yellow (pictured below left), Orange, Electric Eel, Sushi Flower & Jewel Blue – these, I can assure you will apply and stay on in their true colour, add paints such as Jade Eye and Royal Wink under the eye-shadow with strict lines in the shape you want around the eye for even more intensity! €15 each, available at MAC Cosmetics, Brown Thomas, Grafton St, Dublin 2, tel: 016171177 for mail order.

Keep it in the family: Remember you are blocking tones, therefore you want to keep the tones and textures extremely similar, in most cases, you may only need one intense tone to give you the effect you need! As tempting as mixing and matching may be, shades that complement each other are the way to go with this trend. Stick to colours in the same spectrum and layer it heavy for brilliantly bright blinkers.

Be bold: A mix of hot pink, tangerine, lemon yellow, jungle green and cobalt blue made eyes pop on the spring/summer front row. Rarely did one colour stand alone; instead, they were blocked together for maximum impact. You won’t need a blending brush for this technique, instead swap soft and smoky for sharp edges and harsh lines. Really saturate your colours and pat powdered shadows intensely with a flat brush all over the eyelid.

GOSH! Nail Polishes retail at €8.50 each in a number of stockists across Drogheda and the surrounding areas, and can also be found in A|Wear, Scotch Hall. GOSH! is really rocking this trend and are full of colour blocked tones such as yellow, blue, green, pink and orange... perfect to keep your nails looking groomed and en vogue this summer! Lipsticks are another way to really carry this look, fabulous fuschia pinks, sexy fire engine reds and classy carroty orange tones complete the palette. I’ve seen colour blocking on the lips this season so extreme where two tones are worn on the lips, contradicting tones are worn on the top and on the bottom lip! Another tip I will give is to slick on the darker colour on both lips to act as base, before adding the brighter colour on the top lip. Shades for colour blocking lip tones can be found in Maybelline, Rimmel, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurant. Lipsticks range from €4.80 for Maybelline and Rimmel and €28 for Dior and YSL. Fashion

Fine fillies It’s time to get your glam outfits planned and strut your stuff (again!) at the Littlewoods Ireland Ladies Day at Bellewstown Races on August 18th. To impress celebrity judge Sinead Desmond, simply follow stylist Caroline McElroy’s rules to perfect race day fashion

A

Broadwalk dress €200, www.20thcenturyfoxy.com

lthough you may think race day dressing is similar to wedding attire, they both are really different stories altogether. Dressing up to the nines, killer heels, glamorous accessories and bold colours all play their part in any Ladies Day. But while it’s important to dress in something you feel comfortable in, celebrity judge and TV3 presenter Sinead Desmond is looking for ‘stylish ladies with personality at Bellewstown this month’. ‘Individuality is important, don’t be afraid to express your personality,’ she says. ‘I like to see ladies who have used creativity and imagination as oppose to the power of their wallet. I love rediscovered, customised pieces that have a story. I’m a big fan of a hat and it’s important that the hat you choose ties in with your outfit. Finally, a mix of high street and one splurge item works well and remember it’s race day, have fun, dress up and really get into it!’ The best dressed lady at Bellewstown on Thursday, August 18th will receive a €2,000 shopping spree with Littlewoods Ireland while each of the 10 finalists will receive a €100 shopping spree each for the online retailer. To get your overall look just right, follow these simple rules...

The Rules: 1

Bright colours can grab attention but by contrasting or blending colours you can add interest and grab attention. Nude colours were a big hit this year, looking soft and feminine with pastels and also working brilliantly with bold colours.

2

When wearing a statement head piece be sure to play down the rest of your outfit. Likewise when wearing a statement dress or piece, like a feathered jacket, play down your head wear to something simple and glamorous. Overdoing it can look overworked.

3 Shift dress €40, Savida, Dunnes Stores, Scotch Hall

Feather peeptoe €21, available from September in Penneys, West St

Always add your own twist to an outfit. Accessorising can be a great touch, umbrellas, gloves, rings. Diamonds and pearls are never out of place – again just remember the overall look, don’t go overboard.

Arinna ring €13.50, Accessorize, Scotch Hall

4

Classic tailoring works well – it has been known that ladies have worn suits to bag the best dressed prize. Again, its accessorising, sophistication and individualism that is the key.

5

Interest, colour and detail can be added in your footwear and handbags. The rule of both matching is a thing of the past, and sometimes can look a little dated.

6

Don’t forget to dress for the weather, shivering because you misjudged the weather and wore a flimsy outfit, can ruin your day. So come prepared Case clutch €59, Accessorize, Scotch Hall with your dress mac if necessary!

t was Fifties glamour all the way when Drogheda school teacher Maura Collins was crowned Essential Drogheda’s Best Dressed Lady at this year’s Bellewstown Racing July Festival. Top model and celebrity judge Georgia Salpa had revealed she was looking for something ‘classic but different’ on the day and she certainly got that in choosing Maura as the most stylish lady. She wore a navy and cream polka dot dress from TK Maxx, an underskirt from Georges Street Arcade in Dublin, a navy cardigan from Dunnes Stores teamed with navy shoes from Dorothy Collins, pillbox hat from Dunleer milliner Meg Kavanagh, as well as cream gloves and a navy belt that she borrowed from her friend Deirdre Kennedy for the day! Maura won a Globe Travel holiday to Turkey for two people for one week along with €500 spending money.

Gemma, Suzanne, Kayleigh and Lanna O’Connor

‘I really didn’t expect to win,’ she said. ‘But it’s such a great feeling! I have worn this dress so many times but this is the first time with the underskirt. I bought my hat on the morning of the races and as soon as I saw it I knew it would set off my outfit.’ The Best Dressed runners-up included Leighanne Taaffe, Drogheda who won a €500 voucher for You’re Gorgeous Hair Salon in Duleek and Emma McCormack, Mayo who was thrilled to be presented with a voucher for two nights B&B and one evening meal for two people in the beautiful Dromhall Hotel, Killarney. Frank Taaffe was crowned the Best Dressed Man and he walked away with a €500 voucher for Chris Curtis Menswear, Drogheda. Also dressed to impress were 14-year-old Emma Doody from Dublin who earned the title ‘Miss Teen Bellewstown’ and runner-up Mairead Lynch from Clogherhead. The two teenagers won vouchers for Scotch Hall Shopping Centre.

My partner and I have been living together for five years and we have a child together. He is still married to his previous wife – they never got divorced. We are currently going through a rough patch. Will I have any rights if the relationship comes to an end? Lisa C

Dear Lisa, Thank you for your recent letter. You will find that there are many couples in your situation who are not aware of what rights they may have as a result of living together with their partner. An important new Act came into force on 01 January, 2011 – the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010. In relation to cohabitants, this Act provides that if you are living together with your partner for five years, or for two years if you have a child together, and you are involved in an intimate and committed relationship with your partner for this time, you may be entitled to apply for relief under the Cohabitants Redress Scheme. It is important to note that any award made under this scheme is discretionary (ie, you have no automatic entitlement to relief) and an action may only be taken if you have separated from your partner since 01 January 2011. It must also be noted that you must bring an action within two years from the date of the breakdown of your relationship or death of your partner. If you and your partner were to break up in the near future, it would appear, from what you’ve told me, that you would be entitled to make a claim under the Redress Scheme. If your application is successful, the court can make an order in relation to maintenance (periodic payments or a lump sum), Pension Adjustment Orders or may make a Property Adjustment Order. As your husband has not obtained a divorce from his wife, they are still legally married. However, you are still entitled to make an application for redress if you separate from him. In the meantime, you might try Accord Care Services, who offer free relationship counselling and may be contacted on 041-9843860 or by emailing accorddrogheda@eircom.net.

Eamonn Clarke weds Rachel Nugent Ratoath residents Rachel Nugent and Eamonn Clarke were introduced to each other at work four years ago without realising they were actually living in the same estate too! It didn’t take long for Eamonn to decide that Rachel was ‘the one’, and after baby Killian arrived in January 2010 he didn’t take long to propose either. In doing that he proved to be very creative indeed! In fact, he decorated a campervan with an array of colourful banners citing the ultimate question and then driving to Rachel’s parents’ house to get approval from a speechless Rachel. The couple got married in an intimate civil ceremony on July 10th, 2011 with the reception held in the d Hotel, Drogheda. Everyone was kept entertained by the band ‘Heart to Touch’. Louise Smith was the chief bridesmaid while David Weir was the bestman. The couple will head off to Lanzarote shortly for their well-deserved honeymoon. Edward Tierney weds Irene Cowley Childhood sweethearts Irene Cowley from Brookville and Edward Tierney from Georgian Close pretty much knew all along that they would be walking down the aisle eventually. After only five months together Edward proposed to Irene on Bettystown beach and 10 years later their big day had finally arrived. The loved-up couple got married on September 4th, 2010 in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Drogheda before heading to the Glenside Hotel for the reception. Up to 127 guests joined the happy couple and everyone danced the night away to music from local band ‘Clockwise’. The bridesmaids were Irene’s sisters Fiona and Ruth while Edward was accompanied by John and Patrick Tierney. Ten-year-old Ciara Reilly was the pretty flowergirl while eightyear-old Jason Collins took on the duties of pageboy. Irene and Edward honeymooned in New York, Orlando and Tampa for three weeks.

Gardening expert Andrew Christopher Dunne on why creating a water feature is not as hard ne of the most commonly requested features in a or as costly as you might think garden design is a water feature. These can There

O

be large or small, simple or enormously complicated. What ever form they take, done right they can be a valuable asset to any garden scheme. Done wrong they can be at best an eyesore, at worst a health hazard. Well, this month I aim to guide you through the potential minefield that is the world of water features and hopefully help you to avoid some of the most common mistakes. There are so many reasons

to include a water feature of some description in your garden. Firstly, a flowing feature will add sound and movement to a scheme and positioned carefully can help to ease those stresses away while you sip a glass of red in the all too illusive sunshine. A static feature such as a pond can be an invaluable haven for wildlife that will attract birds, animals and insects into the garden. Frogs, which somehow appear from nowhere as soon as you install a pond, are a welcome addition to any garden as they are one of the world’s best organic pesticides. They will quickly rid your garden from many unwanted pests such as slugs and snails whilst being a subject of great interest for any child. A word of warning though, frogs are a protected species and removing frog spawn from the wild to populate your garden pond is illegal.

are a few points you need to consider when choosing a water feature. The first of which is safety. Water of any depth can be a serious hazard to our children and you can be guaranteed that it will also be the centre of their attention as soon at it appears in the garden. If children are likely to be in the garden it is advised to consider an enclosed water feature. These are any feature where the main water sump or storage is concealed under ground and then covered with a steel mesh to prevent unwanted access. A small pump can then be placed in the sump to create a bubbling effect as it pumps water over a rock. Very simple, cheap to install and safe. The second

get noticed!

point to consider is maintenance. Water features of any kind will require regular maintenance and this fact can often result in me advising my client that they shouldn’t include a water feature in the scheme as they are certainly not essential to creating a successful garden. However, there are some features that require far more maintenance than others. An informal pond, for example, with aquatic plants and fish will need constant maintenance to keep plants under control, fish healthy and water clear. The third point to consider is style. This is a matter of personal taste but it should always be considered as part of the overall style of the garden. For example, a contemporary or urban garden scheme should have a simple formal feature such as a formal (rectangular) pond or combine steel or glass with water to form a contemporary water fall. A more informal or country garden is better suited to a wildlife pond or traditional fountain.Whatever style you chose I would urge you to avoid statues and ornaments. They looked good hand sculpted in marble in

Roman villas a couple of thousand years ago, but as the centre piece for a lawn in a back garden in Ireland they are a feature that are best avoided. This brings me to the final point to consider when choosing a water feature. Location, location, location. Think where to position your feature. It should be in earshot of your seated area but it is a good idea to keep it away from your house. This will ensure that you don’t need frequent visits to the bathroom whilst trying to sleep due to the constant sound of running water! It is also a nice to have a water

feature hidden from initial view so that you hear the sound of water first and then are encouraged to explore the garden further. Most importantly, always consider the planting that surrounds the water feature. Large leafed plants and small splashes of colour will set it off and prevent your feature from becoming too dominant in the garden. Remember, the idea is that your garden works as a whole and no one feature should dominate. There are simply thousands of ways to include water in our garden and, as always, I would encourage you to be creative as to how you do this. However, they do require a bit of thought to work successfully and mistakes can be costly. So have a go but don’t rush into it and always do your homework before taking a spade to the front lawn!

Andrew’s tops tips:

Keep it simple: Even our most complica ted water features are designed to look simple. Do your research: Water feature books,

websites and YouTube Lighting: Water features at night can be truly stunning and can create moving shadows at the back of a waterfall Safety first: Always get a qualified elect rician to install circuit breakers to any pumps or pond lighting. If in doub t seek a professional!

Step s

to renting out your house

3

Property management:

4

This can be the key to gaining maximum rental returns on your property. Many tenants insist on renting managed properties and are often prepared to pay a premium for this. This gives you peace of mind that both your property and tenant will be cared for which leads to longer tenancies. Your dedicated Property Manager will look after the general day-today management and more complex issues such as emergency repairs, collection of rent, transfer of utilities and much more.

ith slumping house prices, more homeowners are electing to rent their houses rather than take a loss on a sale. But letting a property for the first time needs much thought and consideration. According to Colin Lenahan of Nest Lettings Agent in Drogheda, successful letting isn’t simply about finding a tenant, signing a contract and handing over the keys, there are important steps every landlord should take when letting out a property:

1

Accurate valuations: Your

aim should be to let your property at the best possible price in the shortest possible time. Our expert valuers carry out many valuations every month giving us intimate and unparalleled knowledge of property values in your area. This is why we consistently achieve the asking price across all of our clients’ properties.

2

Selecting an agent:

When choosing your letting agent consider their opening hours, when they will be available to conduct viewings, their street presence and what kind of marketing your property will receive. These are critical to obtaining the maximum rental value for your property. You should also check if your agent is part of a regulated body recognised by the Government.

First impressions count: Making the

presentation of your property pleasing to the eye is critical to a successful let. The external view is the first view your potential tenants will have of your property, so you should focus on optimising its appearance. Consider addressing any DIY jobs you have been meaning to get done, add a fresh coat of paint where necessary and try to de-clutter to make your space appear larger.
