Real Life

Brookville ‘I’d like to think I’m romantic. When I go out with girls I pay for everything and get them whatever they want. I was at a party one night and I got down on one knee and sang to a girl in front of a load of older people. I thought it was really romantic but she didn’t because she wouldn’t talk to me afterwards.’

Michelle Carroll,

Drogheda ‘Just because I was having a bad day my boyfriend proposed to me wearing only a thong and cowboy hat! He knew I’d find it really funny. Although I knew we were getting engaged it was the best proposed because I’m not a have could way he real romantic.’

He brings me a cup of tea in bed every morning, he always has the fire lit in the evenings, he has dinner made when I get home from work and he starts my car when it breaks down. Of course, I’d really love it if he whisked me away on a city break but it’s all the little things that are important to me.’

Kellie McGuirk Glenview ‘One week when I was feeling down my boyfriend sent me a bouquet of flowers just to cheer me up. Last Valentine’s Day we’d only been seeing each other two weeks but he still bought me a little ‘Me to You’ teddy that said ‘You make me smile’. I thought that was really sweet.’

Frank Kelly,

Scarlet Crescent ‘I went to L.A. on a business trip, and about halfway through the trip I really missed my girlfriend. It was then I decided that I wanted to marry her so I cancelled my meetings and flew home. I proposed the next day while she was doing laundry, she had no idea! Needless to say she said yes, we’re married now.’

Beauty Celebrity make-up artist Emma Woods shares her top three mascaras and lip glosses Everyone has their favourite make-up products and this month I will continue my holy grail of all cosmetics that I have tried, tested and truly love! If I’m honest, the product I get asked about most is mascara, and with so much choice out there it’s not surprising. My love for mascara grows deeper by the day – it’s my ultimate desert island product and I would never be seen, day or night, without it! Similarly, lip gloss is a staple for everyone’s make-up collection. Some are sticky, some are creamy, and some have a bad taste. So, how do you know which ones to choose? Well, no matter what kind of texture, colour, or taste there is a great gloss for all budgets. Here are my top picks for mascara and lip gloss...

Mascara Lancôme Definicils

Named the best mascara several years in a row in InStyle magazine’s Best Beauty Buys issue, Lancôme Definicils not only lengthens lashes, but won’t clump. I use it every day, having tried many types of mascara. Keep in mind however that mascara is one beauty product you don’t need to spend a lot of money on. This product costs €25.50 (Hickeys Pharmacy, West St), but for me it’s money well spent!

Lip Gloss

Lancôme Hypnose

Lancôme Juicy Tubes

At first I was sceptical about this product. After all, it had an odd shape and I was addicted to Lancôme’s Definicils. Why mess with a good thing? I have to admit the odd shape of the brush does take some getting used to, but the colour goes on smooth and silky without clumping and your eyes will never look larger. The effect is much like that of false eyelashes - and I have no idea how they did it! Lancôme Hypnose is currently one of my favourite mascaras. €25.50, Hickeys Pharmacy, West St

This is my all time favourite splurge lip gloss. Juicy Tubes come in a wide variety of colours and formulas, and each one has a pleasant taste. Plus, they give good colour without being sticky. €19, Hickey’s Pharmacy, West St.

L’Oreal Glam Shine Lip Gloss Joining the Glam Shine range are L’Oreal’s newest vibrant shades that promise to make your lips shine like crystals. And to achieve an irresistible pout, the L’Oreal Laboratories have created an innovative heart-shaped wand for even more shine and volume. €9.99, Mahers Chemist, West St.

MAC Plushglass Lip Gloss I love MAC Plushglass in Big Kiss! I think the sheer coral pink colour is a flattering hue for almost every skin tone, including pink under-tones since there’s also a white sparkle to it which doesn’t make the coral tone too warm at all. This can be worn both day and night because its sparkle (not too heavy) and the natural colour make it elegant and classy. The ‘plush’ means it has a plumping action to enlarge the lips. €21.50, Brown Thomas

Maybelline Great Lash

The best waterproof mascara on the market is Maybelline Great Lash. It is an all-time classic and very affordable too! Reputed to be the best-selling waterproof mascara ever created, Great Lash doesn’t clump, lasts a long time and won’t come off easily. €7.59, Boots Pharmacy, Laurence Town Centre

Katie Everitt of La Spa Therapie answers your questions I am six months pregnant and am starting to get an itchy tummy. I’m afraid it may be the beginning of me getting stretch marks – what should I do to prevent this? Lorraine, Co. Meath An itchy tummy is normal during pregnancy as it is just a sign of the skin stretching. However, in some cases it can lead to stretch marks so I would suggest investing in a pregnancy product for the tummy. Apply it every day and night, helping to keep the skin hydrated and also preventing stretch marks.

Got a beauty dilemma?

Email Katie Everitt at info@essentialdrogheda.com with your query

My skin is feeling tight all the time despite looking after it well and exfoliating regularly. Is there anything else I should be using on it to help hydrate my skin? Gillian, Laytown This is quite a common complaint giving the cold weather we’ve been experiencing. I would suggest using a hydrating face serum under your moisturizer – this will work on the deeper layers of the skin while your moisturiser will protect the skin. Ask your local beauty therapist for advice on the best serum for you.

Health & Fitness Is your fitness regime starting to falter? Has your get up and go, got up and left? Well, don’t worry, Integral Duty Manager Samantha Reilly shares her top tips to stay on track 1

Get some sleep! Your body needs sleep to heal and repair itself. You can feel sluggish and your energy may be low, but don’t fret. Eight hours a night can help you lose weight! 2 If you can’t make a class or a visit to the gym, go outside for a brisk walk. Even if it’s cold, your body will work harder to keep you warm, so extra calories will be burned. 3 Replace unhealthy snacks with healthy ones. Put down the chocolate bar and instead pick up an apple. 4 Exercise releases endorphines, nature’s happy hormone. Move more and feel better.

Drink lots of water, if you’re thirsty you’re already de-hydrated. Boost self confidence with a Salon treat, or a hot towel shave! A Positive Mental Attitude will keep a spring in your step. If you’ve reached a short term goal already, reward yourself with a non-edible treat. 9 Get your friends together and attend a fun class like Zumba to dance away those blues! 10 Finally, don’t forget this is the month of LOVE... so after a night of dancing and amour you will have burned off more calories than you can shake a stick at! MOVE

OF

THE MONTH

The Plank & Side Plank

The plank and side plank are excellent exercises to help improve your core strength and conditioning.

Step 1

Lie on your stomach. Raise your body up in a straight line and support your bodyweight on your forearms and toes so that your body hovers over the mat. Keep your back straight and your hips up. Hold your abs tight (as though you were bracing against a punch to the stomach), but breathe normally. Hold this position for 20 seconds, and try to hold it a little longer each workout.

Step 2

Once you have mastered the original plank, why not try the side plank? To do this, twist onto your side and raise your body in a straight line so that your body hovers over the mat. You will be supporting your bodyweight on one forearm and the side of one foot. Keep your back straight and your hips up. Hold your abs tight.. Hold this position for 10 seconds for each side, and try to hold it a little longer each workout.

Citrus Yellow

Interiors

Accent Colours

As mentioned before there are usually a couple of new colours that are thrown into the mix to add an exciting element to interior decorating colour schemes. A true purple has been the accent colour for a few years and is continuing to be an attention getter. Yellow has always found its way into home decorating schemes but now you’re going to see a darker or richer yellow emerging as a sunny accent colour. Pink has been popular for a while and will probably actually grow in its acceptance, especially very saturated pinks.

Symbolising positive energy and the vivacity of sunshine, citrus yellow conveys goodness and relaxed fun. It can help minimize anxiety and stress, which is perfect for today’s busy and active lifestyles.

Beige on beige is a thing of the past, says interior designer Niamh Carter. This year neutrals are edgy and exciting...

C

olour trends change every year, usually just a slight variation from the year before with a few new colours thrown in to add some excitement. This year is no different but there are some surprises with neutrals getting a touch of infused colour. As people spend more time in their homes, old beige on beige colour schemes have begun to feel depressing and staid. Expect almost urgent bursts of vibrant colour as a quick and easy way to keep your interior design scheme exciting. Don’t simply think paint when thinking of colour though; expand your vision to include floors, ceilings, window treatments, light fixtures, accessories and anything else that can hold a burst of colour.

Vintage Wine

Resurging from past trends, nature’s colours always find a way into modern home design. They have always been popular, and experts believe that this colour will still be a favourite among interior decorators and home owners in the coming year, due in part to the comfortable, happy and energized mood it can bring about. Whether it is used for upholstery or painting walls, avocado tones will never fail to create a unique appeal and evoke a cool feeling.

22

Blues

Turquoise and ice blue have been popular for a while but now a truer shade of blue is finding its way into home décor. Blue and white prints and plaids are very hot and can even be mixed together by skilled home decorators.

Peach

For old and new trends, peach tones have always been a favourite for people who want to create a comfortable, homey feeling. The brighter tints can bring life to your interior space and at the same time invoke feelings of warmth among those living there.

Greys

The rich combination of smoky violet and a deep brown base will absolutely add to the elegance and style of any home’s interior design. Vintage wine, along with its lighter variations, can be a great colour choice for leathers, wood finishes and paint colour.

Avocado

Purples

Purples were the exciting accent colour a couple of years ago, now they’re moving into the mainstream and will be as common as blue was in the 1980s and 1990s. True purples will still be considered a bold move but lighter shades of violet, darkened mauve and raisin tones and bluer purple tones will be standard and very common in all interior decorating elements.

Greys will be a neutral colour in 2011 used to balance deeper, more saturated and interesting colour shades. Expect to see greys ranging from almost white to very dark and every shade in between, quite often with hints of blue and green. Grey hues will not only be used in paint and wall colours but will be very popular for furniture and fabrics too.

Greens Greens are taking two opposite directions when it comes to interior decorating. Look for green that moves into an olive hue or even something that leans further into the browns. And then on the other end of the spectrum you’ll see greens that are heading into the teal shades. It’s almost impossible to get these colours to play well together so if you’re going to go green you’re going to have to pick.

James Devereaux weds Carol Hurley It was a meeting by chance in the summer of 2001 that brought Carol and James together – and seven years later in March 2008 on a trip to the romantic city of Paris, James proposed at the Eiffel Tower. Shortly after returning from their trip a wedding date of June 4th 2010 had been decided upon, which is also Carol’s birthday! Carol, from Stameen, is the daughter of Frances and Edward Hurley, and James, from Duleek, is the son of Betty and the late Jimmy Devereaux. The bridesmaids were Carol’s sister Catherine, best friend Laura Fleming and James’s sister-in-law Michelle Devereaux and the groomsmen were James’s brothers Colm and Edward and his cousin Stephen Kirwan. The happy couple exchanged their wedding vows in the Church of St Theresa, Bellewstown with a reception held afterwards in the Ballymascanlon House Hotel, Dundalk. Following a weekend of celebrations the newlyweds enjoyed a three-week honeymoon in Beijing, Hong Kong and Bali. Photos by Grainne Duggan, Art & Soul Photography

Enda Johnson weds Laura McGuirk It was seven years ago that Laura McGuirk originally from Mounthanover, Duleek met Enda Johnson from Collon, Co. Louth. However, it wasn’t until November 26th last that they exchanged wedding vows in St Theresa’s Church, Bellewstown. The three bridesmaids were Laura’s sisters Monica and Amy McGuirk and Doreen Ludlow, while the groomsmen included Trevor Durnin, Damien Johnson and Tommy McKenna. The wedding party celebrated afterwards in the Ballymascanlon Hotel, Dundalk where The Enemies and DJ Groggy Mac made sure it was a party to remember! The happy couple honeymooned for two weeks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Photos by Gillian McEnteggart 24

Thomas Costello weds Eimear Murphy It was fate that initially brought Eimear Murphy and Thomas Costello together. Fast forward six years and the couple tied the knot on August 2nd, 2010 in St Aidan’s Church, Butlersbridge with a reception afterwards in The Cavan Crystal Hotel. Following the meal, Deco Five entertained the guests into the small hours and a great time was had by all, especially by Eimear’s brother Thomas and Thomas’s brother Robert who both travelled from America and Australia for the occasion. Thomas is the son of Derek and Bernadette Costello, Killineer while Eimear is the youngest daughter of Tom and Patty Murphy, College Rise. Eimear’s bridesmaids were her sister Pamela Philips and best friend Roisin Keane, while her nieces Sophie and Lauren Meegan and Iona Finnerty were flowergirls. Thomas’s brothers Robert and Niall were the groomsmen and Eimear’s nephew Matthew Meegan was the pageboy. The happy couple spent their honeymoon in Rome and Sorrento. Photos by Tony Campbell

Barry Flynn weds Francesca Paolozzi Who would have thought the old Londis supermarket in Bettystown would be a breeding ground for romance? Well, that’s exactly where Barry Flynn first met his Italian bride Francesca Paolozzi. After seven years together the Donacarney couple finally tied the knot on August 7th 2010 in the Star of the Sea Church in Mornington, with five bridesmaids and groomsmen by their sides. Francesca’s best friend Sandra Byrne was maid of honor, along with her sisters Danielle, Rebecca and Vanessa and Barry’s sister, Chiara. The groomsmen were Greg Monaghan, Robert and Dean Paolozzi, Chris Taktikos and Barry’s brother Shane. Francesca’s niece Holly was flowergirl and the couple’s three-year-old son Eoin was pageboy. A wonderful reception was held in the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan. For their honeymoon the newlyweds jetted off to Lake Garda for 10 days. Photos by Jimmy Weldon

Word Lens really can translate text in real time and it’s quite amazing to see it in action. I loaded the Spanish to English, and found some signs in Spanish, most were translated well enough to understand, but some of the more complex phrases threw up some very interesting results. Word Lens isn’t something that can flawlessly translate a Spanish magazine article into English, but it will replace the phrase book on holidays. It also contains a language dictionary as well. The big plus abroad is that you do not need any internet access to use Word Lens. Cost: Free, but Spanish to English translation pack and English to Spanish translation pack cost €3.99 each. Facebook and Bono

With all the talk of Facebook’s recent valuation of $50 billion it’s worth noting the fact that our very own Bono has a keen interest in the company. His private equity fund, Elevation Partners, has invested a total of $210 million in Facebook. This has quadrupled in value to $750 million. Good timing too as Bono’s company was labelled the ‘worst investor in America’ by 24/7 Wall Street last March having suffered some of the biggest losses of any investor.

pinions can change. And they certainly have in this case. The first time I drove the new Kia Sportage at the car’s European launch, I was let down by the way the car behaved. More specifically, it was the way the car was set up. The suspension felt clunky and the ride was pretty appalling, and this was from a brand that lately seldom seems to put a foot wrong. Sure enough it looked great, was well-equipped and we knew it was going to be priced really well, but why had they seemingly got such an important aspect of the car so terribly wrong? So we told them.

Qashqai

by

Paddy Comyn of

And I don’t really know whether they have listened, but having spent the last few days in the new Sportage, here in Ireland, it would appear that things have improved. Gone is the crashy, unwieldy handling, to be replaced by an altogether more cossetted set-up and now it feels like the car we hoped it would be, which is a credible rival to the dominance of the Nissan Qashqai.

This is a very pretty SUV and a massive leap in terms of design compared to the model it replaces and compared to its Hyundai relative, the ix35 it is a much better looking car. And it is loaded with kit too. Standard equipment includes 17” alloys, half leather trim, privacy glass, cruise control, voice-activated Bluetooth and panoramic sunroof. We’ve had the 2.0-litre all-wheel drive model on sale for a little while but most people would have been holding out for this model, the 1.7-litre diesel, which is frontwheel drive and has 115hp compared to the

136hp of the 2.0-litre. Any thoughts that the smaller engine would feel any way anaemic vanish quickly as the car feels lively enough. It also falls into tax band B, so annual road tax is just €156. All models have active safety features including ESC (electronic stability control) and VSM (vehicle stability management). HAC (Hillstart Assist Control) prevents roll-back when starting on an ascent, while DBC (Downhill Brake Control) limits speed to just 8km/h on a steep descents. Six airbags and active head restraints are also standard on all new Sportage. This car is another entrant into what is quickly becoming a very important segment in Ireland and we have seen from the success of the Nissan Qashqai that there is a huge appetite for this kind of vehicle. The price of the car is excellent at €27,800 and, remember, you get a seven-year warranty too. But more than that: we give them lots of encouragement to help them to believe in themselves.

It will be a Primary Care Centre where patients can have all their medical needs including minor-surgical procedures taken care of.

underway and with the snow behind us (hopefully!) - we wish local businesses much success in the year ahead. The Chamber in conjunction with ‘Bid and Tender Management Systems’ are running a fantastic two-day course on February 15th and March 1st on how to secure public sector contracts. The course will focus on five key points: the procurement environment; the bid/

no bid decision (factors to consider), formulating bid strategies; the bid management process (planning, coordination, writing, the bid plan, checklists and guiding principles) and the bid document (content, design and production). eight. I was paid seven shillings and six pence. Describe your work style? People say I am laidback but I like to think of myself as learning to be more focussed as I get older. What is the best part of your job? Being able to reassure patients and put them at their ease. My work specialises in controlling fertility, men’s health and vasectomies. As a professional it is always a great compliment when men who have undergone vasectomy operations report ‘Doctor, I hardly felt a thing’.

What are your ‘pet hates’ in the workplace? Not being able to keep a tidy desk. And I think my Practice Manager Janet would agree that my untidy desk is her pet hate too. But my desk is not really untidy... it’s just busy!

Who do you most admire? I salute Fr Iggy O’Donovan. He is a courageous, caring and compassionate communicator. He can handle delicate issues with brutal honesty and sensitivity at the same time! His use of humour adds greatly to his delivery. His leadership seems to me to be very undervalued in the Church. What was the last thing you googled? ‘The 100 Best Movies of All Time’ ... I love great movies but rarely get time to go to the cinema. My resolution for 2011 is to make more time to enjoy classic movies. Enterprise Week Over the next couple

of months the Chamber is working on a number of initiatives and events for the Business Community. We will see the return of ‘Enterprise Week’, commencing on March 7th, where there will be plenty of workshops and seminars available to the public. A new competition named ‘Life’s A Pitch’ will also be run in conjunction with Enterprise Week where the successful business winner will walk away with a prize fund of €5,000. Full details will be available soon on our website.

This Valentine’s Day why not enjoy a special homecooked feast put together by Michael Foley, head chef of Seasons Restaurant in the Boyne Valley Hotel

T

he most romantic day of the year is almost upon us – and how better to celebrate your love than by cooking a romantic dinner for two together! The meal doesn’t have to be a time-consuming chore; if your other half’s favourite food is spaghetti bolognaise, serve it in a fancy dish and enjoy. Or perhaps this is the perfect time to splurge on fresh fish or delicious prime fillets of beef? To help you along, Michael Foley, head chef of Drogheda’s finest eatery, The Seasons Restaurant situated in the Boyne Valley Hotel, has put together an easy, romantic menu for your pleasure. Michael, together with his highly experienced kitchen team, Shane Connor and Bridie Murray, are continuously striving to provide high-quality cuisine at affordable prices in the Boyne Valley. An ever present landmark for family and social occasions, the hotel offers a quality ‘a La Carte Menu’ and a price competitive ‘Set Menu’ boasting fresh fish and steak specials. For bookings, please call the restaurant manager Eugene Molloy on 041-9837737.

Grilled Goats Cheese, Rocket & Baby Beetroot Salad with Garlic Croutons & Walnut Vinaigrette (Serves 2) Ingredients: 100g rocket leaves 2 x 2inch thick slices of goats cheese 2 small cooked baby beetroots (from the supermarket) 2 slices bread (crusts cut off and the centre of bread cut into 1 inch cubes)

1 clove garlic 6 cherry tomatoes 1tbsp walnut oil ½tsp mustard 1tbsp lemon juice Salt & pepper

Method: 1. Firstly, make the garlic croutons. Place the whole clove of garlic in a large pan with a little vegetable oil. When hot, toss in the bread cubes. Keep tossing in the oil until golden brown. Turn out onto some kitchen paper and throw away the garlic, season with a little salt & pepper. 2. Now, make the walnut vinaigrette. Place the

walnut oil, mustard and lemon juice in a bowl and whisk together. Add salt & pepper to season. 3. Wash the rocket leaves and drain excess water. Place in a large bowl and pour over the vinaigrette. Mix together to coat evenly. 4. Cut the beetroot into quarters. Half the cherry tomatoes. Place the slices of goats’ cheese under a hot grill until golden brown.

5. Finally to serve, place a generous handful of rocket in the centre of a plate. Use half the beetroot and half the cherry tomatoes for each person. Place around the leaves, scatter over some croutons, and to finish, place the goats cheese on top. Spoon over any remaining vinaigrette.

Roasted Fillet of Beef with Pan-Fried Tiger Prawns in Garlic, Chilli & Coriander Butter (Serves 2) Ingredients: 2 X 10oz fillet steaks 12 tiger prawns (fresh or frozen) shelled 50g butter Method: 1. First make the garlic, chilli & coriander butter. Finely chop the chilli after splitting it lengthways and removing the seeds. Add to the crushed garlic and butter. Mix until smooth. 2. Season both fillets with salt & pepper before pan frying the steak in a little oil making sure to brown all sides. Place in a pre-heated oven at 195C, gas mark 5 for

1 red chilli pepper 1tbsp freshly grated coriander 2 cloves garlic crushed ½ glass white wine Salt & pepper 10 minutes (rare), 15-20 minutes (medium), 25 minutes (well done). When cooked, allow 10 minutes for beef to rest. 3. Meanwhile, pan fry the shelled tiger prawns in half the butter (3-4 minutes will be enough time for them to cook). When nearly cooked, add the white wine. 4. To serve, place the cooked fillets in the centre of your plate and spoon over the prawns and butter sauce, allowing six prawns each. This dish will be perfect accompanied with creamy mashed potatoes and vegetables of your choice.

So is one wine more romantic than the other? Seamus Daly from Quintessential Wines says choose a bottle that’s simple yet seductive this Valentine’s Day Love is in the air! Every year people stumble hopelessly for new original ideas on how to impress that special one on Valentine’s Day. At Quintessential Wines we say do it with wine. Our slogan for February 14th is K.I.S.S. – keep it simple and seductive! So, is one wine more romantic than another? The conventional wisdom, which being conventional lacks imagination, is that you should say it with something bubbly or pink. There’s something about the aura of celebration created by the pop of a Champagne cork, allied to the giggliness inspired by the rush of bubbles through the bloodstream that makes us all want to reach for a bottle to celebrate the festival of romance. Prosecco is a wonderful sparkling wine from Italy with just a hint of sweetness which makes for a pleasant glass of bubbly especially if you are not eating. Rose Prosecco is also very popular. However, sometimes only Champagne will do. It will cost you but if you plan to woo in real style, dazzle the object of your affections with a really good quality Champagne from a small organic producer such as Vilmart. It should be in every would-be seducers armory.

Puff Pastry Apple Tart with Vanilla Pod Ice-Cream (Serves 2)

Ingredients: 1 x 6-inch round puff pastry (frozen) ½ green apple ½ red apple 1tbsp sugar 1 pinch cinnamon Vanilla Pod ice-cream (or good quality vanilla) Icing sugar Method: 1. Cut a 6-inch round of puff pastry (a small cereal bowl is ideal to use to cut around) then place on a baking tray. Pre-heat your oven to 200C. 2. Prick the puff pastry with a fork to prevent rising. 3. Slice both apples thinly (4 inch slices) after removing the core. Arrange these slices over

THE WORLD WINE TOUR

For white wine lovers my advice is to play it safe and get something zesty, crisp and fresh and perhaps a little racy. Wines like Sancerre, Sauvignon blends from Bordeaux, good Pinot Grigio, Gavi, or Spanish Albarino should fit the bill.

lapping each other in a fan shape all around the pastry leaving an edge of ½ an inch. 4. Brush with a little melted butter, then sprinkle over the sugar and cinnamon and bake for 15 minutes. 5. Remove from oven, allowing to cool. Serve warm with a scoop of the Vanilla Pod icecream in the centre of the tart and sprinkle with icing sugar.

For a red how about good Pinot Noir, which can be one of the most sensual wine experiences ever with its heady aromas making one weak at the knees? Pinots are generally lighter than other wines but don’t mistake lightness for lack of power. New Zealand Pinots are really coming into their own now. Finally, why not woo your lover with a sweet wine to have with fruit dessert or chocolate? Try Moscatel from Malaga or perhaps a LBV port. Call in and see us at 9 Dublin Road Drogheda and let us help you find the love this Valentine’s Day, call 041 – 9830960 or email sales@quintessentialwines.ie

The Best of

Everything

with local artist Richard Best artist ever: It has to be God – after all he is the creator of everything! It doesn’t get more original than that. Best painting: The Descent from the Cross by Rogier van der Weyden. It’s a masterpiece and was completed by Weyden in 1435. The colours are very striking and I particular like the arrangement of the figures in the picture – fantastic to look at. I first came across Weyden’s work in a book and have painted a copy of The Descent since so that I could get a better look at it. It’s not necessarily the best painting in the world but I like it. Best setting: Any quiet place in the countryside or by the sea.

textured bronze sculptures. It’s fantastic to look at – I was very impressed. Best up and coming artist: There are quite a few young impressionable artists out there that I’m keeping my eye on. It’s hard to just pin it down to one. Best time of day to paint: My favourite time is dusk as when you’re in a valley and the sun has set you have an extra hour of light. But in order to keep learning you have to paint at all hours, day or night. There’s beauty in everything, you just have to take the time to look for it. For example, at night the colour of the sky with the stars is really wonderful to watch, and after a while you begin to appreciate the richness of the night sky.

Best art materials: Best source of inspiration: I love nature and I always all things natural. use artist When you go out to quality paints; they’re a little more the beach, you have expensive but they’re worth it! I love Chinese the sky, the sea and brushes as they’re really well made and have the sand – there’s no a lovely spear shape (you can get a broad buildings, no traffic. brush stroke or a very thin line with the same In other words, nothing changes – it’s a time brush). I was fortunate that a friend of mine free place. McWilliam’s exhibition which Best achievement: Co-writing ‘Island of the was in the Highlanes Gallery early last year. Setting Sun: In search of Ireland’s Ancient McWilliam’s was a Banbridge born artist Astronomers’ with my friend Anthony whose surrealist and figurative sculptures Murphy. another achievement is to reach this age (I was 54 on Christmas Day) and still be fit and healthy! Best childhood memory: Going fishing, shooting and sailing with my father, Alec. I had a wonderfully varied childhood. My father was a GP and he would often bring me on house calls with him where I would meet and see all sorts of people and places. Best thing about being a dad: My wife Marita and I have been blessed with our daughter, Elizabeth. She’s been the perfect child and turns 24 this month. Elizabeth and I have similar interests but it’s very important that she finds her own way in life. But no matter what path she takes in life, once she’s happy that’s all that matters. Best way to unwind: To walk where there’s trees, water and old ruins. It sounds boring but I find it works for me. Simple pleasures are the richest! Best read: I read a wide variety of books, everything interests me! I’m currently reading Lorna Byrne’s biography, ‘Stairways to Heaven’. I find her intriguing and I suppose I’m curious about what she has to say. Best film: Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion of the Christ’. It got the story across very clearly and you get a better sense of what they went through from watching that film, especially what his mother Mary went through. It’s a very strong emotional film; these days very few movies give you that sense of feeling. Best drink: A big mug of tea and on the odd occasion a pint of Guinness. Best snack: A nice ham sandwich to go with the tea! Best hideaway: The bed!
