o it’s that time of year again when the chocolates go heart shaped and girls everywhere find themselves secretly hoping for a bunch of flowers! Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day is nearly upon us, and to help you set the scene for a romantic night in, Drogheda interior designer Elaine Keogh turns the bedroom into a beautiful boudoir on page 30. Also this month E catches up with Drogheda-based author Nicola Pierce who talks about her highly-successful children’s book, The Spirit of the Titanic on page 12, and if you ever fancied a ‘Girls Night’ in with TV presenter Lorraine Keane, now’s your chance (see page 38)! For anyone whose financial situation is getting a little too cluttered, local accountant Gail McEvoy gives some spring cleaning tips on page 29. Enjoy your read!

BENEFIT-POCKET PAL LIP STAIN & CLEAR GLOSS (€22.50, Brown Thomas, Dublin) This is by far my number one product! It’s a double-ended lip stain and gloss: you apply the stain first which dries in and tints your lips and then coat it with the clear gloss. It’s brilliant for freshening up your make-up throughout the day, and I love the fact that the lip stain is also a blush. What more can I say? It’s a wonder product!
VANI-T BRONZING CUSTARD (€20, Studio Wax Drogheda) This is one of our top selling products in the Studio and I swear by it! It’s a body lotion with a hint of tan in it to give you a healthy sun-kissed glow. I apply it just once a week but it can be applied twothree times a week to build up a deeper tan. The best part is it’s organic and smells delicious too!
4
Fuschia Brow Splitz (€15.50, Studio Wax) Studio Wax customers will know how much we love eyebrows and creating the perfect shape with threading. To complete the look we always recommend Fuschia Brow Splitz after threading. It’s a brow powder along with a brow wax and when applied through the brow it instantly frames the eyes and gives definition to your brows. It comes in a range of shades but I always use taupe.
2
CHANEL INIMITABLE INTENSE MASCARA (€29, Town Centre Pharmacy, West St) After trying nearly every mascara on the market I have finally found the best. I got this for Christmas and I love it! It’s great for day time and I love the brush as it separates every lash and creates added length. For a more intense night look, it can be layered up without looking too clumpy.
5
Nimue Exfoliating Enzyme (60ml €49, refill bottle €30.59, Tranquility Health & Beauty, Bryanstown) I use this product at least once a week although ideally it should be used twice. It’s a gel based exfoliant which uses fruit enzymes to break down skin cells so it’s very gentle on the skin but really effective. You’ll notice your skin brighten instantly after use. It’s more expensive than other products out there but it will last you for months and can be bought in a refill bottle after.

How do I make powder blush look natural when I apply it? Karen, Drogheda A subtle sweep of blusher will lift your cheekbones and enhance your face. Apply it after foundation, although if your skin is clear you can wear it on its own. Blush is one of the hardest cosmetics to apply and must be blended perfectly to ensure there are no harsh edges (using a good brush will make all the difference). Make sure you shake off all the excess before applying. Choose the colour carefully. The right shade will make you look healthy while the wrong colour can drain the entire colour from your face. One layer of blush is usually enough, however if you like a good helping of colour maybe using a slightly deeper colour may help as opposed to layering the product to get the colour you want. If you feel your blush highlights the appearance of open pores, I recommend not using a product with shimmer going through it, use a matte blush and then in the summer a cream blush can help the appearance of freshness on the skin.

Luscious lips for Valentine’s Day
L
ike with anything make-up related, preparation is key. To exfoliate, apply Vaseline to the lips, and using a soft toothbrush gently brush the lips to remove any dead skin. Wash your lips with a face cloth and reapply a small amount of Vaseline or your favourite lip balm. Your lips should be one of the last parts of your make-up regime, so attend to the rest of your face while the Vaseline works to moisturise your lips. If you’re going for a dramatic lip, best keep things muted on the eyes. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear fake eyelashes or black liner, just that the colours should be kept quite soft and understated. If on Valentine’s Day, you find yourself in When applying your a daring mood. Why not opt for red. foundation, don’t worry if some gets Nothing makes a statement and uplifts on your lips, because it will actually aid the complexion quite like it. And after your lipstick’s staying power. all, red IS the colour of love. What people don’t tend to realise is that it’s your skin tone rather than your hair colour that determines what shade of red best flatters. So, if you have fair skin, a red lipstick that has pink or blue undertones will work well. Red tones with orange or yellow touches looks great on medium skin tones, whereas darker complexions can pull off deep, dark red shades as well as burgundy hues. We’ve found that reds with a hint of coral suit most people’s complexions. • A great tip to avoid getting lipstick on your teeth is To avoid your lips looking too chalky, opt to stick a freshly-washed finger in for a creamy texture rather than a matte, the centre of your mouth, close your such as Fuschia’s bestselling red lipsticks mouth pursing your lips on your Raisin, Brick Red and OMG Red, all finger, and remove. To avoid a detachment between your liner and your lipstick, we use a liner after the lipstick has been applied. Unorthodox, I know, but we find it avoids those dark circles people can be left with when lipstick has worn off. Fuschia lipliner favourites include Scarlet and Sugar and Spice, €12.95. For even more drama and volume, a clear lipgloss such as our bestseller Wet Lips, €13.50 (left), can be applied over your lipstick. If, for whatever reason, red isn’t your thing, and you’d prefer to play up your eyes and keep your lips simple – our Super Gloss, €13.50, which is available in 10 flattering shades and which contains Vitamins A To give the illusion and E, will deliver shine as well of fuller lips, place a very small as softness. long after new President Padraic Kierans took up the chains of office in June of last year, he sat down with Chamber Council and took on board the input of many local business owners and managers, to create a policy document entitled ‘Town of Drogheda Regeneration Policy’ (TODR). The mission of TODR policy was to bring together all key stakeholders who shared a common goal, which is to reverse the degeneration Ongoing economic regeneration projects of Drogheda Town Centre and its struggling businesses, to highlights the hard work and commitment breathe new life into the town, bringing a fresh approach, methodology, plan of action and determination to re-ignite of the Chamber on behalf of the area. Donore Toll Removal Campaign Drogheda & District Chamber has been actively campaigning for
the removal of the Tolled On/Off Ramps at the Donore Interchange, on the M1 Drogheda bypass, for a number of years now. We launched a very visible Press, Poster and Car Bumper Campaign under the slogan Drogheda’s Goal: NO MORE TOLL! – and on August 24th last, Chamber President Padraic Kierans and Chamber Deputy President Patricia Rooney voiced their objections to Michael Kennedy and Michael Egan of the NRA, on behalf of the citizens and business people of Drogheda. Mr Kierans put it to the NRA that the PPP Company, Celtic Roads Group (Dundalk) Ltd. (CRG) – who signed a 30-year contract with the NRA in 2004 and are entitled to charge tolls in line with the approved toll scheme – consider abolishing the tolls at the Donore Interchange and transfer the loss of income per transaction to the per transaction charge on the main toll on the M1 Interchange. This would only reflect a minor increase to the user of the M1 Main Toll Plaza at Balgeen, and would eliminate the difficulties which are presented uniquely to the main entrance to Drogheda town centre on the Donore Road. Mr Egan said this would not be possible under the current toll scheme which has fixed the maximum level of the toll charges subject only to changes in the CPI. Undeterred by the unhelpfulness of the NRA to find a solution, President Kierans subsequently asked: ‘Would it be possible theoretically, to achieve this compensation for CRG if the Government were to raise the maximum level chargeable at the Main M1 Toll Plaza, by the amount required, to correct the CRG loss of revenue?’ Drogheda Chamber have yet to receive a response to this question and it is our intention to insist the CRG be prepared to consider, and deliver alleviating alternatives, to the current barrier the toll ramps at Donore Interchange impose on Drogheda’s economic health and growth.
Drogheda Economic Forum
The Drogheda Economic Forum (DEF) is a group within the Louth Economic Forum set up to promote Drogheda’s unique economic strengths. Comprising both public and private sector stakeholders, the DEF is an all encompassing organisation with its main aim to make Drogheda a superior town to live in, work in and visit. The Chamber has four seats at the DEF which is now chaired by our own Patricia Rooney. The DEF recently underwent a review of its work under the direction of Dr Pat McCloughan of PMCA Consultants – and the result is a more focussed and results driven organisation which has many exciting projects lined up, and indeed has already delivered the Drogheda.ie branding and new website.

proud of ‘Invest Drogheda’ FDI Trip to Silicon Valley
In November 2011, Mayor Kevin Callan and Chamber President Padraic Kierans led a delegation to the United States with one very important objective: to create a permanent link with Silicon Valley and California. To achieve this they met with the Irish Technology Leadership Group (ITLG) at the Irish Innovation Centre in San Jose. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss all aspects of Drogheda’s local economy and the advantages that the town can offer to Silicon Valley interests. A meeting in the d hotel on December 9th saw Mayor Callan announce that Drogheda was now an official ‘Gateway to Silicon Valley’ through the new Drogheda Enterprise Centre which was offered a support package of $50,000 by IFTG. It was also revealed that Drogheda now had a sister city relationship with the City of Salinas where the Irish American Mayor, Dennis Donohue was supportive of our efforts and had already visited the town. Padraic Kierans outlined the significance of the successful ‘Invest Drogheda’ FDI Mission: ‘We have a collective vision for Drogheda, which we need to communicate to the rest of the world. Drogheda is the perfect location for US businesses to locate when looking for a launch pad for entry into the European Market. We pitched for Drogheda to be that location and demonstrated how we have the ideal location, infrastructure, highly skilled workforce, 3rd level education facilities, and spirit of enterprise. We hope to see the benefits of the trip and the “Invest Drogheda” proposition in the months and years to come.’ The work undertaken by the Chamber has already reaped its own rewards with the US delegates visiting Drogheda recently. In addition we will return to the US in March 2012 to build on those links at an event where An Taoiseach will also be in attendance.

Commercial Rates Reduction Campaign
Drogheda & District Chamber is bitterly disappointed that despite meeting with many of the local councillors in advance of December’s 2012 Draft Budget Meeting – to illustrate the imminent needs of so many Drogheda businesses for a 15% reduction – that the draft budget as presented by County Manager Conn Murray was passed without challenge. Chamber President Padraic Kierans who led the meetings with the local councillors, the Town Clerk Joan Martin and the County Manager to outline the woeful state of businesses in the area outlined his disgust at the decrease proposed of -1.5%. ‘This is an insult to the enterprising spirit and determination to endure of local business owners and managers, during what is one of the town’s most difficult trading periods,’ he said. ‘The council saw no problem with increasing it on average of 6.6% from 1999 to 2009 but have failed for the third year in a row to correct the damage done by only reducing in 2012 by a paltry -1.5%, which no doubt will be negated by inflationary pressures of energy and bank loan rate increases.’ However, there was some good news in the DBC Budget with the DBC deciding to abolish (for a trial period) the €3 All Day Parking Charge in the ‘All Day Car Parks’ on the perimeter of the town from January 1st 2012. The other good news for business was that the Tourism budget has been increased to provide a new Boyne Valley Tourism Officer as a shared resource between Louth and Meath County Councils. This represents an increased investment in Tourism by DBC of some €58k for 2012.
Local Heroes Drogheda
‘RTE Local Heroes Drogheda – A Town Fights Back’ aired from 9th November 2011 up until 16th December, although the work started in earnest in July 2011 when the Drogheda District Chamber of Commerce set about pitching the town to RTE to win the programme for Drogheda. Much has been delivered in a very short space of time by the Regeneration Team of ‘Local Heroes Drogheda’ and indeed by this Chamber of Commerce. When everyone else saw no way out, the citizens and business people of Drogheda on the Boyne have combined to sustain and create enterprise, deliver investment, broadcast hope, attract employment, and showcase business opportunities. The process actually began following a public meeting held on the 6th September of 2011, followed by an Ideas Summit within six days and then the opening of ‘The Hub’ in quick succession. All this delivered in less than three months; this displays most eloquently the desire of the people of Drogheda to engage in this process, in this format. Some of the Local Heroes achievements to date include: • Droghedajobs.ie website • Drogheda Visitor Guide • Business Mentoring & Coaching • New Retail Shops in Drogheda x 10 • Drogheda App for Iphone • Timebanking • Samhain Festival • Local Food Producers Showcase • Paint Shop Street Landscape with Fleetwood • Free Municipal Wi-Fi across Town Centre

Weddings
Mike Earls weds Anne Mead
Although it was a day of showers and wind, nothing could dampen the spirits as Mike Earls wed Anne Mead in St Catherine’s Church, Ballapousta, Co. Louth. The Ardee couple tied the knot on August 19th, 2011 which was 10 years to the day they met while on holidays in Spain. Up to 240 guests, including those who travelled from Australia, Boston, Sweden, London, Scotland and Liverpool, joined the couple for the reception in Trim Castle Hotel. At the meal, Patricia Treacy from Blackrock, Dundalk played the electric violin, which saw guests dancing between courses! This created a fantastic atmosphere and the guests were ready to rock the dance floor afterwards with local band, The Temptations. The bridesmaids were Anne’s sister, Angela Meade, Eleanor Bradley and Emma Burke. Bestman was Conor Martyn, Mike’s friend, while Enda Earls and Colm Burke were the groomsmen. The two flowergirls were Innes McAleese and Daisy Earls. The couple recently honeymooned for five-and-a-half weeks, starting off with three nights in Bangkok then on to Australia where they covered the east coast. Photos by Paula Kavanagh

My sister and her child were involved in a terrible car accident over the Christmas period. My sister is 37 and has just been told that she could lose the bottom of her leg. Her child, my niece, is 3 years old and might lose the sight in one of her eyes. Would she be entitled to compensation? Karina
A
Dear Karina, Many thanks for your enquiry. I’m very sorry to hear about your sister and your niece’s accident. Accidents such as the one your sister was involved in can have a devastating and life changing effect. You have not given me any details about who was responsible for the car accident but if your sister was not responsible for the accident, she will be entitled to a claim for compensation from the driver of the vehicle and / or his insurance company. In order to make a claim for personal injury, you must first make an application through the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (“PIAB”). On average, PIAB can take nine months in which to make an assessment but, on occasions, can take longer. If the matter does not finalise at the PIAB stage, your case may proceed to court, where it can take between one–two years, or maybe longer to settle. Given the extent of your sister and your niece’s injuries, it is likely that her matter will go to court before it is finalised. At this stage, various reports (eg, medical reports, occupational therapist reports, architect reports, actuary reports, etc) will need to be obtained to assess the long term effect of the injuries and to make sure that your sister and her niece are adequately compensated, taking her present and future difficulties into account. This can be a very complicated process and one which your solicitor will be able to guide you through. For more information on the personal injuries process you can go to www.injuriesboard.ie or make an appointment to call in and speak to me in confidence about your matter.*
* In contentious business a solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement

your financial situation a bit cluttered? Try out Gail McEvoy’s tips to tidy things up INCOME Look at your Net Income: how much have you available each month. Include wages, children’s allowance, bonus, tax rebate etc., make the most of your income – have you claimed all of your tax credits? What about tax back on medical expenses?
TIP When you get paid leave enough in your account to cover fixed outgoings and savings. Then withdraw the balance each week in cash and spend that on non-essential. You are much more thrifty spending cash than a laser card!
By now you should have a clear picture of your spending habits. Now, look at your fixed outgoings and see if there are any cheaper alternatives. ESB, Gas, telephone/broadband are items that immediately come to mind, but there could be significant savings to be made by shopping around for cheaper insurance both car/household and life insurance. Interest rates for both loan and savings products constantly change, so shop around for these also. It might seem like you are only saving a few euro here and there but IT ALL ADDS UP! All this is just tidying up your finances and getting the best value for existing expenses and cutting back on non-essential items.
finances EXPENDITURE Go through your bank statements over a three-month period and examine all the standing orders and direct debits. Consider each and every payment, are they necessary? Maybe it’s time to cancel the club subscription or cut back your cable package? Also, keep a record of all your other spending such as cash, laser card, credit card over a two- or three-week period. You could use a diary, iPhone app or notebook to get a full picture of your family spend. Your expenditure can be broken into three categories:
Fixed outgoings • Mortgage/rent • Car loan/Credit Union loan • Childcare/Educational • Transport • Food • Essential Clothing • Telephone • ESB/Gas Non-Essential Outgoings • Entertainment • Holidays • Sporting/Leisure
Savings • Long term –‘Rainey day’ money i.e. Pension, Educational and long term savings. The ideal is to have three to six months annual income in an accessible account, plus retirement planning and educational funds. • Short term savings such as holiday cost, Christmas, back to school etc should be in a separate account to your ‘rainy day’money.
SO, WHAT IF IT DOESN’T ADD UP? If your income doesn’t meet your outgoings you need to take action NOW. Increase your income is the most obvious but isn’t always achievable. If you can’t increase your income you need to restructure your outgoings. Action Plan • Cut back all unnecessary expenditure. • Review loan repayments, go and talk to the provider and restructure to an amount you can manage. • Credit card debt – this is the most expensive debt around. Talk to your bank or credit union about taking out a loan to clear the credit card, keeping monthly repayments at a minimum – then cut up the credit card. You can now buy pay as you go credit cards which is much more sensible. • Mortgage – If you can meet with your provider and see if you can make interest only payments for six or 12 months to allow you clear off old debts. Going back to repayment as soon as you are on your feet. Most lenders will allow this if you have an achievable well thought-out plan. Remember, you are not the only person unable to make ends meet these days and the key to a solution is not to bury your head in the sand... ACT NOW. If it all seems a bit daunting talk to a Financial Advisor, Accountant or MABS now and get back on track!

ith Valentine’s Day fast approaching and vintage style bang on trend this year, why not bring some romantic glamour into your home? Soft pastel shades such as peach, rose pink, soft mauve, and mint are 2012’s colour palette – and vintage is the perfect style to enhance these shades. Not only is the style classic and romantic, it’s timeless too, and this colour palette can also be used anywhere in the home long after Valentine’s Day is over. So, how do you create a vintage boudoir to bring out the romantic in both of you? First things first, de-clutter your bedroom; you cannot create a romantic ambiance with clothes and boxes lying around. Find a home for everything and put it away, you want to create a setting not unlike a hotel room. To pull a romantic scheme like this together it’s all about heightening your senses...

Lighting your boudoir is an important aspect; it’s what creates the mood. I particularly like this side light ( 1 Rustic rose lamp €89, Harvey Norman) but tea lights, candles and lanterns are just as effective. Choose an array of different colours in the scheme and ensure they’re scented also. Light as many as you can because they give a dramatic 3 effect to any room.

Taste - Champagne /Cava is a must for Valentine’s Day, why not choose a pink/rose option to tie into your colour scheme? Set on a tray or dresser with strawberries and cupcakes to make it more appealing, or why not play around with some love heart sweets or pink and white marshmallows? Arrange them in glass jars around the room. Finish off by scattering some peach or pink rose petals on the bed and around the tables.

ince its inception, the League of Ireland has been waging an ongoing war with British clubs over the loyalties of football fans throughout the country.
Windmill Road with Ciarán D’Arcy
Long gone are the days of 40,000 people cramming into Irish grounds to witness a domestic football match. However, the seemingly inexorable rise of ticket prices for Premier League matches may present an opportunity for League of Ireland clubs to lure disgruntled Irish fans who support English teams through the turnstiles once more. In the harsh economic climate of modern Ireland, the increasingly extortionate prices being charged by the Premier League’s top teams are now hitting their Irish fan bases harder than ever. Teams such as Liverpool and Chelsea are now charging €50 for the cheapest seats in the ground. Take into account that any Irish fan must factor the price of flights into the equation, and the grand total usually comes to over €100. So, in the midst of these Premier League price hikes, what’s the alternative? Well, you could travel abroad and pay €100 to see one game, or you could travel down the road and get a season’s worth of football for €200. Drogheda United have set the season ticket price for an adult and child at a reasonable €200 for the coming season, and this is very much the norm across the league with Shamrock Rovers charging the same for an adult season ticket, and newly promoted Cork City charging a paltry €170. Contrast this to the €1,150 charged by Arsenal and we see exactly how good Irish football fans have it. Efforts to improve Irish stadia in recent years have enhanced the match day experience for fans hugely. And a recent ticket price index compiled for European leagues put the Airtricity League as one of the best value leagues in Europe. The average adult ticket price for an Airtricity League match is around €15. Compare this to what English fans have to pay to see their favourite teams play, and one comes to the conclusion that maybe the more ‘glamorous’ match day experience to be sampled at Anfield or Stamford Bridge just isn’t worth the hassle, and most definitely not worth the expense.

GorillaPod L ike cameras and people, tripods come in all shapes and sizes and can cost anything from a couple of euro to a couple of grand. If there is one piece of advice I can give you regarding tripods is to make sure that it is heavy and stable enough to carry what often is an expensive piece of kit. With that in mind, I tend to avoid heavy plastic tripods and instead always go for a model that is primarily made of metal. Good quality, full size, tripods would typically start at around €100. Of course, not everyone wants to be humping a heavy tripod around which is why a lightweight tabletop and stubby tripod is a good alternative. One of my favourites is the ‘Gorilla Tripod’ from Joby which originally came onto the market as a gimmick but has evolved into

a serious piece of kit. There are now three Gorilla types available: the GorillaPod Micro 250, GorillaPod Micro 800 and GorillaPod Hybrid – all designed to meet the needs of enthusiasts who shoots on-the-go with a point-and-shoot camera, or have moved up a notch to the high end compact or DSLR. These ingenious inventions can ‘hang’ from just about any place as long as the pole or branch is able to support its weight alongside the camera it is attached (the GorillaPod Hybrid will support cameras up to a ‘bag of sugar’ weight of 2lb), or you can just use it as a standard upright tripod. Even better news is these three devices won’t break the bank, retailing from €20 to €50. Certainly Joby has come a long way with its GorillaPod Original that was launched over five years ago, and it is heartening to see them continue with passion.

I was really impressed by front man Keegan’s remarkable vocals and incredible stage presence and couldn’t get over how natural a performer he was. The crowd went crazy for the band’s influential sounds of Kings of Leon, U2 and Foo Fighters. You may wonder why they called themselves Machine Gun Baby? Well, the name stems from one of their earlier songs titled ‘Machine Gun Baby’ which deals with the very sensitive issue of the use of children as soldiers to fight in modern wars. 2011 saw the band play in McPhails for ‘Beat on the Boyne’ as well as McHugh’s Venue on several occasions supporting acts such as The Minutes and Aslan. 1798 Tomorrow the Barrow we’ll Cross by Joe Murphy This is an enthralling and page turning novel
from locally based author Joe Murphy which will both entertain and inform. Brilliantly researched and movingly written, it is the story of two Wexford brothers, Dan and Tom Banville who despite their different political views become involved with the United Irishmen and the rebellion of 1798. The book shines with historically accurate description and authentic dialogue but the real strength of the novel is in the careful crafting of a gut-wrenching and page-turning story filled with characters that you will come to love. The story is told from a number of viewpoints; the idealistic Dan, the realistic Tom and the courageous Elizabeth – and it also examines the impact of the rebellion on all levels of society. €13.99 (Liberties Press)

Best girls’ night out: Is that not obvious? ‘Girls Night’ of course! It’s the new musical touring Ireland this spring and will be my acting and singing stage debut. It has been running off Broadway and on the London’s West End for years and promises to have the girls singing and dancing in the aisles – pre-theatre cocktails not compulsory but recommended!
