appy new year everyone! So have you adjusted to the fact that it’s 2012 yet? One of my main goals for 2012 is to get fit and run 10K (no mean feat for someone who has barely walked never mind run during the last six months!). While my active husband takes on the Connemara Half Marathon Challenge in March, I’ve decided to make some lifestyle changes of my own and follow a beginners’ training programme. On page 14, Drogheda and District Athletic Club’s Fit 4Life group have devised a head-toheels guide for anyone taking to the running highway this January, while on page 13 E takes a look at the best fitness classes in town. And if you’re serious about becoming lean in 2012, why not enter our fab competition on page 12 to win a year’s membership at Integral Fitness & Leisure? Go on, make 2012 the year you achieve your own personal fitness goals. Enjoy your read!

RUN Drogheda RUN January sees a whole herd of people who have made the decision to get off the couch and take to the running highway – but before the month’s end many will have hit the ditch!

Drogheda and District Athletic Club’s Fit 4Life group have devised this head-to-heels guide that will show you how to get going, keep moving, and make running a lifelong habit

I

t’s here, in the beginning, where many new runners stumble. You think, ‘today, I’m going to start running’... and out the door you go with the best of intentions – but maybe not the best preparation. Four minutes later your legs, lungs, and even your insides hurt. Don’t despair. Whether you’re fresh off the couch or coming from another sport, running takes time to break into. Every able-bodied person can be a runner. Just start slowly and build up gradually. Most coaches agree that the best way to become a runner is with a run-walk programme. Begin by adding small segments of running into your walk. Start with four to five minutes of walking, then alternate with some running, always ending with a walking segment to cool down. Aim for running at an easy, conversational pace three days a week, with rest days in between. Over time, work up to running four to five days. The training plan that follows is designed to get you to the point where you can run 30 minutes (about 2 miles) at a slow, relaxed pace. It’s a simple, progressive programme that begins with more walking than running, and gradually evolves into more running than walking. Treat yourself like a runner from day one. That means taking time to properly warm up and

and running it’s Now that you’re up e tips going. Here are som important to keep a of t nning the habi to help you keep ru lifetime...

Set yourself a goal: All runners need a goal and to stay inspired. Goals should be real and achievable. Events such as the Boyne 10K which comes to Drogheda’s streets on May 6th, 2012 should tick all the boxes. Join a club: Having an exercise partner improves the odds that you’ll stick with running and here’s why: Your run flies by when you’re talking with a friend, and knowing a partner is waiting for you is great motivation to leave the comfort of your chair. Drogheda and District Athletic Club’s Fit4Life group caters for all the needs of the novice runner, even motivation! 14

Confessions

of a BEAUTY

erapist Paula Field is a Beauty Th Health & and Manager at Integral she shares Beauty, Drogheda – hereve without the products she can’t li

1

The steadfast golden rule in my life is definitely ‘thou shalt not be pale!’ – and I just have to get my spray tan done every Friday without fail. I feel so much better all week with a healthy glow and I really think spray tanning is a low maintenance but very dramatic look for everyone. I use St Tropez tan every time. It’s the oldest but the best in my opinion! My own salon offers a full body spray tan for €15….so not that expensive for a week of looking bronzed and healthy!

JUNKIE 2

My make-up bag is my prized possession – I know that’s a cliché for a beauty therapist, but who wouldn’t want to cover up their flaws and highlight their good features if at all possible! It is a no-brainer for me – my make up makes me feel ‘dressed’! My favourite product is Giorgio Armani foundation. It is initially a little expensive at €32 but after searching the market for years this foundation is definitely the best and longest lasting. I get mine in Brown Thomas in Dublin.

5

4

Maybelline Collasal Volume Effect Mascara is every girl’s dream product. A mascara that covers, lengthens, thickens – all in one product! It really does exactly what it says on the tin and I love how intensely black the colour is. The The great thing about this product is the price, it’s just €7.99! And even better, it’s available in almost every chemist and supermarket locally.

as

There is one perfume I keep going back to time and time again… I guess it’s my signature scent and my mam wears it too! It is Armani Code by Armani and I get it in Miriam Meagher’s Town Centre Pharmacy for €49. I also love the Body Wash and the Body Lotion.

MAKE-UP Masterclass with Gillian Moore of Fuschia

For a flawless complexion If you’ve overindulged over the festive period, be it with alcohol or food, or both, chances are your skin is showing the effects. Is your complexion pallid and lifeless? Have you had a break-out? Don’t worry, with the right base and techniques, flawless skin is easily achievable. • Firstly, you need to prepare your skin. To remove dead skin cells and to ensure a smooth surface, it’s important that you exfoliate using a product specifically-designed for use on the face. DON’T use a body exfoliator as the granules will be too harsh. • Moisturise your face and neck with a product that suits your skin – preferably with an SPF. If time is on your side, I always wait at least three minutes after moisturising before applying my make-up, just to ensure it has absorbed into my skin. • Just before application, I apply a Fuschia face primer, €22, which singlehandedly reduces the appearance of pores, absorbs excess oil and bolsters the staying power of your make-up. It’s a seriously under-rated product. 18

3

I must, must, must have a Dermalogica facial every month… I feel like a totally different person afterwards and my skin looks like it’s been on a week’s holidays; fresh and rested! I use the Ultra Calming range as this suits my complexion. There is a lovely starter pack in the ultra calming range for just €55 that has five products included in a lovely gift box. It’s a great way to try a top quality brand for a great price! Couldn’t do without it!

6

Smashbox Skin Perfecting Primer (€38) is my absolute favourite. Smashbox has developed a fantastic product for underneath foundation and this primer from their collection instantly controls oil and evens out skin tone. It’s lightweight, so I love to use it on days when I need my make-up to look flawless and to stay put.

Getting the foundation right • Now, it’s time to apply your base – the most important part of every make-up look. Countless factors, including age and skin tone, will determine the type of foundation that works best for you. A quality foundation should sink into the skin rather than sitting on its surface. It is imperative that you try out as many shades in natural light before purchasing. Contrary to popular opinion, the best place to try out a shade of foundation is along your jawline. • Fuschia’s mineral make-up range is particularly popular with women aged between 15 and 40. Customers rave about the natural coverage, and the flawless and lightweight finish that it delivers. The key is in the application: when using mineral make-up, the coverage needs to be built up gradually using a buffer brush in circular motions. If it appears shiny, you’ve used too much product. Use our flocked sponge to remove any excess. You can also add a little Mineral Rice Setting Powder on the top to calm the shine. If you need further coverage for a specific area, such as, say, under the eyes, concealer should be applied AFTER mineral make-up. • Powder-based foundations are less flattering on mature skin. Instead, use a soft, moisturising, light-reflecting foundation, such as our Phototouch Liquid Foundation, €37.95, which has Skin Optic Light Technology combined with Botanical Extracts to ensure skin looks visibly younger. It also has a built-in brush for precision application. • Until you have foundation application down to a fine art, I’d advise you take some time over it. It’s worth it. I mean, what good is face contouring, or smokey eyes, if your foundation isn’t right?

Next month, in line with Valentine’s Day, it’s all about lips. I’ll show you how best to optimise your pucker to leave your loved one or potential loved one wanting more!

Faery Tale

by Signe Pike Do you believe in Fairies? Signe Pike does. Faery Tale is a memoir and travel book recounting Signe’s travels through Britain and Ireland looking for the magic which is everywhere in childhood but which in our modern era we as adults dismiss so easily. Signe examines the mythology and traditions of England, The Isle of Man, Ireland and Scotland and the stories which were fireside favourites not so long ago; and she travels to the places associated in folklore with fairies such as Glastonbury, Dun Aengus, Snaefell, The Fairy Bridge and many others. With a similar feel to the bestselling Eat, Pray Love this book focuses on both the inward and the physical journey. This is a beautiful book highlighting our need to reconnect with nature and the past. If you’re interested in folklore this is a must read. €11.50 (Hay House UK)

Memoir

Chicklit

This is an enjoyable and page turning story focusing friends, Anna and Michelle. Tough business woman Michelle agrees to run a failing bookshop and asks Anna who has lost her job as a librarian to be the manager. Celebrating reading and especially the books which we loved as children the bookshop is at the heart of the story and as Anna starts a book club and a mum and toddler group despite her friend’s doubts, the bookshop becomes the heart of the village. Lucy Dillon has an unashamedly romantic style but she still tackles big subjects as Anna struggles with her fertility; Michelle with her ex and a haunting secret; and the business suffers from the recession. All of the characters are carefully crafted and the storytelling is faultless. If you are a dog lover you will enjoy the fact that the dogs are characters in their own right and if you are fan of Maeve Binchy you will love Lucy Dillon’s warm and cosy style. €8.99 (Hodder and Stoughton)

Michael O’Reilly weds Rima Skankute

When Michael O’Reilly met Rima Skankute eight years ago in Zanzibar little did they realise it was the start of their life journey together. The pair married on August 13th, 2011 in St Canice’s Church, Finglas followed by a wonderful reception in the Boyne Valley Hotel, Drogheda. Surrounded by family and friends and their son Nathan, the bride and groom celebrated with a four-course meal followed by dancing into the small hours with The Enemies. Ensuring that the day went off well were chief bridesmaid Ruta Stankute, bridesmaids Laura Kuodyte and Asta Vilkaite, bestman Paddy O’Reilly and groomsmen Paul Hogan and Bernard Connolly. The flowergirls Megan Nolan and Gabija Stankute played their part too! The couple rounded off their wedding with a week-long honeymoon in France. Photos by Michelle Prunty

John Kelly weds Lee-Anne Mathews

Drogheda man John Kelly first met his future bride Lee-Anne Mathews 20 years ago when they both were in the Lourdes Brass Band. But it wasn’t until 2006 when they got together, and finally tying the knot in St Peter’s Church on May 27th, 2011. Assisting on the day were Lee-Anne’s sisters Rhona Nesbitt and Lorraine Henley and her niece Clare Kelly as bridesmaids. Bestman was Daithi Martin and groomsmen were Johnny Newman and Colin Black who are all friends of the groom. Two flowergirls and pageboys also graced the bridal party which included Abby Strutt, Eva Kelly, Connor Nesbitt and Adam Henley. The reception was held at Cabra Castle in Kingscourt with 168 guests joining in the celebrations. Written by Willy Russell, the legendary BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True with Maureen Nolan, of the world-renowned pop group ‘THE NOLAN SISTERS’ reprising her role as the tragic Mrs. Johnstone. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multiaward winning BLOOD BROTHERS, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 23rd phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. No wonder BLOOD BROTHERS is now ‘The musical for all time’.

The

of everything

with comedian, Jason

Byrne

the whole time with the King of Best one-liner I never tire of: It Morocco. was a line I heard on a Ryanair flight just as we landed: ‘Will Best TV show on the Box right people needing wheelchair now: Ghost whisperer, it’s about a assistants, please remain seated woman who’s an angel, and she can until the rest of the passengers see the dead but no-one else can, disembark.’ I mean what else well, except for her mate, he can, but that’s it, noare they supposed to do if they need a wheelchair! one else can, unless you’re a ghost then they can all see each other… it’s just the best Best thing about doing stand-up: telly ever, EVER! You get to make so many people laugh, and I get Best car I ever drove: A Ferrari to make them laugh all Daytona, it was a beautiful car over the world, and it makes to drive, and when you put your me smile so much; no b****x, you get to be a foot to the floor your testicles manic depressive and nobody thinks your odd. ended up on your shoulders. Best gig: I did a gig on a cruise ship that was going up the River Nile. I had my flights and accommodation paid for, and I got to spend

Best gadget I own: My media player, it has about 10,00000 films, plus I can look at photos and use my USB stick on it, and it’s quite a strong thing, because when I throw it at the wall after it doesn’t download something properly, it stays totally intact.

Best song to sing in the shower: ‘I hate singing in the shower’ by Johnny hates Jazz, and all other types of music. Best friend in the business: John Henderson is my best friend in the business, he’s my Irish manager, and he works very hard for me, he likes everything I like, dreaming, dancing, Xmas, oh the list just doesn’t end.

Win

Best person to make me laugh: My wife makes me laugh all the time, she’s the only person that has me in tears when she tells jokes, or hits me with a smack of the iron. God, I love that woman, and I’d tell her right now, if she hadn’t broken my jaw! Best hideaway: I have a man shed; I go out there and bang a hammer off stuff for a couple of hours. I’ve told my wife that I’m making a chair out there, but all I did was buy a chair and take it apart, and then I show my wife the bits as if I’ve made them. Best hobby: Collecting single gloves off fences. Best book: I love to read comics, not the Beano! You know, adult comic books, I was always a fan of Judge Dredd, so anything like that will do. Best place for dinner: At the dinner table. Best place for a pint: My local in Oldtown, it has an open fire, lovely pints, and loads of blokes that smell of horses, sheep and potatoes… ahhhh, where else would you get it ? Best new year’s resolution: Keep doing what I’ve been doing, even if it’s the wrong thing, because I’m an ignorant Irish person and I’m always right!
