Stuart Heslin on page 38: ‘The best thing about Drogheda is undoubtedly its people, the characters. People are what make a community great…’ Well, the strength of character and fundraising efforts being displayed by this fantastic bunch of novice rowers is most admirable and should be applauded by us all. They are the reason the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue & Recovery Service, the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre and Drogheda Youth Development will secure badly-needed funds. So let’s rally behind them over the August Bank Holiday weekend – and embrace our community spirit. Mixing with film stars is all in a day’s work for E’s cover girl, 19-year-old Evanna Lynch who bids farewell to the Harry Potter phenomenon this month. Catch the full interview with Termonfeckin’s sweetheart on page 11. Have you had a holiday that you’ll never forget? Congratulations go out to the Hair and Beauty students at D.I.F.E! Once again they pulled out all the stops to combine their talents and produce a topquality photo to be published in Essential. Divided into teams the brief was to interpret one of four trends in their own personal style. This year’s trends were Midnight Stage, Virtual Life, Tales of Folk, and Belle de Jour – with the top four from each category pictured here. However, there can only be

one winner – and it was model Grainne Corbett who won over the ‘E’ team! Grainne represented the Belle de Jour team which included hair stylists Alison and Louise McNabb and make-up artist Ava Kessie. All of the photographs, both indoor and outdoor, were taken by Derek McAuley and prove that individual talents merged together can produce amazing results. Well done to all involved, especially the teachers.

Sleep tight

interview What can we expect from Deathly Hallows Part 2? The fact that it’s the last one means it’s really the end and all the characters are given a moment. The film centres mostly on the Hogwarts Battle and even though they say Harry’s the Chosen One to kill Voldermort you also get to see Neville Longbottom coming into his own. JK Rowling described the seventh book as ‘a blood bath’ but I don’t think it’s that bad! People will cry though as people do die...

Luna!

Her life has literally been turned upside down by JK Rowling’s books but Termonfeckin actress Evanna Lynch is finally bidding farewell to the Harry Potter phenomenon. Here she talks to Carmel Riggs about her future without Luna Lovegood and her dream of becoming a writer

Of the four Harry Potter movies you starred in which did you enjoy making the most? They were all quite a different experience. On the fifth one I was so star struck and felt like I nearly didn’t deserve to be there, like I was a peasant! Everything was so new to me and I had no knowledge of the film industry. It was a very daunting time and I was probably too nervous to enjoy it. Everyone went out of their way to talk to me and help me but I couldn’t let go. In my own head I was trying to preserve the magic of the film but it wasn’t enough, I’d sacrificed friendships. It took until the last film to finally feel that I belonged – and I even experimented a bit with the role. Have you kept in touch with any of the cast – and is there anyone in particular you would like to work with again? It’s hard to keep in touch all the time as we’re all doing different projects now and are in different countries. But whenever we know there’s a promotion of sort coming up we’ll get together in London. One of my best friends on set was Katie Leung (Cho Chang) – we had a really good relationship and we both got the part through open auditions. I also hung out with Bonnie Wright who plays Ginny Weasley.

I hear you’re moving to London to study performing arts – is this true? Won’t you miss Termonfeckin! I’ve changed my mind! I filled in the CAO forms here so I might go to university and study Art History and French or maybe Russian – I like the culture! I want to go to Trinity, it’s a classic university and my mom used to go there so I’ve heard all the stories! With regards more acting, I’m not ruling it out at all. If the right role came along I’d be happy to forgo university but until then I’ll just take one day at a time. I’m not doubtful about my ability to play other characters; while Luna was such a distinct role and a great character, I’ve many other sides to portray too.

the premieres online, I loved looking at the cast arriving all dressed up... now I’m on the other side! I just feel so proud to have been part of it all. I enjoyed the publicity side of things too; last year I got to go to Japan with Rupert and Bonnie which was crazy – we brought these all-in-one Disney character suits with us and dared each other to wear them. It was such fun, a really good memory!

If you weren’t acting, what career path would you choose? I’d definitely be an author – I love reading! While I like acting and really enjoy meeting so many people and having so many different experiences, I feel it’s not the most creative you can be. As an actor it’s someone else’s experience you’re bringing to life.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2 hits cinema screens nationwide on July 15th

Fabulous

Will you miss Luna Lovegood now that it’s all over? Absolutely! I found her very inspirational and she always had a good affect on me. Luna is a very spiritual person who’s at one with nature. While most people stress out about things in their lives, she’s very comfortable with herself. While playing her she had a very calming influence on me. In general I can be calm about most things – but not exams!

If you could’ve played any other character in the HP series who would it have been and why? I’m very fascinated by Snape’s character – he’s so layered and you never know what he’s thinking. He’s a complex mixture of good and evil and while he makes Harry’s life miserable there’s a great twist where we find out he has been in love with Harry’s mother since he was a boy, and so he devotes his life to her memory. Alan Rickman played this part brilliantly.

Speaking of exams how did your Leaving Cert go? They were okay – no easier second time round though! The Leaving Cert is probably the hardest exam anyone can ever go through. I spent about 90 per cent of my time preparing for English and History – I love those subjects so they were easier to study!

When you look back over the whole experience, what’s your fondest memory? I’ve always loved the premieres. Even before I joined Harry Potter I would watch

Beauty

Let’s nail it!

For beautiful hands and feet this summer, a manicure and pedicure is the way to go. Emma Woods looks at what’s available in town

W

ith summer well and truly here, it’s not only time to look after our skin but also to take care of our precious hands and feet! This is the time of year to really show off so why not dress them up with beautiful polishes and gems? Hands are usually the first telltale sign of your age, so if you don’t protect them from the damaging rays of the sun, you will find your hands aging prematurely. Although your nails are made of a protein called keratin, it’s important to protect them from the sun as well. If you apply sunscreen to your hands, you’re probably already covering the most vulnerable area near your nails: your cuticles and nail folds. However, if your cuticles or nail folds are damaged, you’re more likely to contract a fungal or bacterial infection. I turn 25 this month and was wondering when I should start using an eye cream? Rose, Drogheda It is essential to use eye cream both day and night – and you should begin to use one now! It will hydrate the eye area, stimulate collagen cells and help to prevent crow’s feet and premature aging. I am having my first spray tan this week; do I need to prep my skin beforehand? Jessica, Mornington Before having a spray tan it is essential not to wear any deodrant, perfume or body moisturiser. The skin must be free of any body products. To make the tan last longer I would suggest exfoliating the skin the night before with a salt scrub or body brush. This removes any dead skin cells and therefore the tan will last longer.

unning a business takes bravery and resilience in today’s challenging operating conditions. Business-owners must pull the country out of recession and turn Ireland back into a fully-functioning, successful economy. This is a difficult task because costs have shot up quietly during the Celtic Tiger era. The Small Firms Association claim ‘rates have increased by 50% over the past decade, double the rate of inflation.’ These costs can now mean the difference between a business’s success and failure. Many companies have called on the Government to keep their election promises and tackle excessive charges. New changes in PRSI and VAT rates should go some way to drive job creation and reduce the cost of employing people.

’ l l I n y e a ver forget.. d i l o h e Real LifeTh . By Jim Brady, Ballsgrove

It’s another beautiful sunny morning in Kos, Greece as we head off to the harbour to take the Nissos-Kos boat out to the volcanic island of Nissiros. The bow of the boat slices through the clear blue waters as we sail out of Kos harbour, while we watch sun-seeking holidaymakers on the beach with their multi-coloured parasols reaching for the sky like rows upon rows of flowers, opening their petals to catch the morning sun. By this time the boat’s bar has opened and my son Michael with a broad smile on his face asks: ‘What are you having dad? You can have anything you want, as long as it’s cans of Mythos Lager!’ After several trips to the bar we are nicely happy and not before long the rattle of the anchor chains greet our arrival at the wondrous

island of Nissiros. We have been here before and know what to expect but it’s always a great adventure. We catch the bus that will take us right into the heart of the volcano. The views are awesome and definitely not for the faint-hearted as the bus moves along narrow winding roads, slowly upwards towards the summit and crosses the volcanic rim. The true concept becomes clear as we gaze down the inside of the volcano with its five separate pits. Soon after we are underway again on similarly narrow roads. As we descent we encounter another bus coming up which requires skillful reversing by the two bus drivers. After a little break we head down the dirt track that leads into the main pit of the volcano. The floor of the crater is as large

as about five football pitches. The smell of the sulphur and smoke is everywhere and the heat of the crater is intense. There is a cauldron of boiling mud, which brings home quickly to everyone that we are very near the power of nature in the form of the volcano’s underlying molten lava which could erupt at any time! As the ship is not returning for another two hours we take our time to explore the quaint town of Mandraki with its narrow streets. We have our own special fish restaurant out on the sea front, and quickly make our way there. As always the food is fresh, probably because we see the fish being caught while we enjoy a few bottles of Lager and Ouzo! Some time later we arrive back at the boat and find ourselves a nice table to enjoy our return journey to Kos harbour. The trip is over for another year and we are exhausted. It’s not difficult to enjoy yourself when you go on the great Kos and Nissiros Greek adventure.

Sense of style Granny Chic or Fabulous Fifties? Niamh Carter examines new looks that will have your home bang on trend this summer

Splash Out

Make the most of your bathroom with a sexy and grown up colour scheme. To achieve this look choose burnished mosaic tiles in coppery tones, chrome appliances and work with oversized accessories. Finish with dark wood furniture, a warm wool rug and, depending on the size of your bathroom, an armchair for a luxurious look. When choosing unitss, opt for wall-hung styles because there will be less clutter around the floor. Also remember dark tiles are more forgiving of streaks and smears!

Inspiring Kitchens Incorporating bold colours such as teal, crimson red and eggplant purple into kitchen design is another major trend. Bold colours make kitchens feel more vibrant and interesting. You can use these on the wall or as accents in countertops, tiles, backsplashes or window coverings.

Designer Kitchens, Coes Road, Dundalk

Chalky Pastels Luxurious wall and floor tiles are available from Emerald Tiles, Donore Industrial Estate, Drogheda

Chalky pastels of dusty pink, mint green and pale blue are a key palette for the summer. Subtle hints of colours are added to tableware and hard accessories. This colour palette is combined with matt finishes.

Exteriors Gardens don’t have to be packed with flowers to look good, says gardening expert Andrew Christopher Dunne. Simply use your imagination more, get creative and break the rules…

F

rom Trinny and Susannah to Gok Wan or our very own Brendan and Sonia, it is clear that we have a serious, if not seriously unhealthy, obsession with all that is fashionable. It’s a big part of our human nature; we all want to be different and to out shine our neighbours. Well, believe it or not, in the world of garden design things are not much different. Just like London Fashion Week can somehow influence what we wear on a day to day basis, the annual flower shows across Europe can dictate what plants appear on the garden centre shelves next summer. In the world of garden design, it is the Chelsea Flower Show where the trends are set. Here, for one week only a large forest park in the west of London is transformed into a showcase for the very best of what the gardening world can offer. A show garden here, which

24

E Drogheda

will probably have been in the planning stages for years and designed to last only a week, may have cost millions. Okay, so maybe it is a long way from your humble green space and certainly a budget of millions may not be a reality. But still these shows can offer us all something to brighten our lives. After all, you would never dream of wearing some of the crazy outfits you see on the catwalks of Milan but it is those very same concepts that are the inspiration for all those inexpensive must-haves from our favourite high street stores. This year, it was our very own Diarmuid Gavin who was at the forefront of trend setting at Chelsea. With his gold medal winning ‘Sky Garden’, which consisted of thousands of plants with barely a flower in sight, some 30 pools of water and a large fully planted up pod that was hoisted from a 60-tonne crane, Diarmuid’s garden was certainly a sight to behold. Love it or hate it, even this garden, (reputed to cost €2.3million) has something to offer us all. Firstly, it shows that gardens don’t have to be packed with flowers or bursting with colour to look good. His garden was predominantly green and full of texture. Green is a very calming and relaxing colour and should not be overlooked in the garden centre. Grasses

and foliage plants are so important in any garden and really should form the basic structure of your own. The second and most important lesson to learn from this garden is that we all should use our imaginations more, get creative and break the rules! Don’t just think of your gardens as plants, lawns and patios. Instead, why not add sculpture, plant vegetables in your flower beds or grow grass on your shed? Ireland has its own slice of the action with the annual Bloom show held in the Phoenix Park. With an estimated attendance of over 60,000 people this year, you would be forgiven for thinking that Ireland had slipped out of recession. Here too the trends of grow your own and environmentally friendly gardening were on show. But cleverly Board Bia, the main organisers of Bloom, combined a gardening festival with an artisan food event. This not only made it a great day out for the whole family but it also highlighted another very strong trend in the gardening world, to promote garden living as a lifestyle. No longer are gardens seen as a labour of love enjoyed by bearded men and little old ladies. Instead they are places to socialise with friends, an environment to de-stress from the riggers of modern life or simply an extension of your home at a time when space is all too limited. As we finally realise the fact that our houses are our homes and not just another step on the property ladder it is encouraging to see a renewed interest in developing our green spaces. Whatever your own horticultural skills may or may not be, it is still important to realise the full value of what is probably the largest room in your house. So with a little creativity and a touch of accessorising, your garden could be on trend too this summer. Andrew Christopher Dunne is a multi-award winning garden designer based in Clogherhead, Co. Louth. To book a consultation, go to www.acdesigns.ie

Mark Finegan weds Nicola McKeon After spending 12 years in New York, Nicola decided to return home to Drogheda. On a night out with friends in Drogheda’a Mariner Pub she was introduced to fellow Drogheda man Mark Finegan. The pair hit it off straight away and after three years together they decided it was time to commit to each other long-term. The couple married in St Mary’s Church, Drogheda, followed by a reception in the relaxed atmosphere of the d Hotel. The Viva Vanilla string band, as well as Deco05 and last but not least Marco, the Singing Chef, took to the stage much to the amusement of the guests! Mark’s cousin Mary and husband John Quinlan very kindly stood in for Mark’s deceased parents Tommy and Gerti, who were fondly remembered by everyone. Nicola’s parents Paddy and Aggie were as delighted as the rest of their family and friends with Nicola’s aunty Eileen even cutting short on her Mediterranean Cruise to be there for the big day! The couple’s bridesmaids were Nicola’s sister Patrice Killorn and best friend Eleanor Kennedy and the groomsmen were Mark’s brother Thomas and nephew Kieran Floyd. Nicola wore a Mori Lee dress by Madeline Gardner from The Bridal Studio, Drogheda, while the flowers were beautifully arranged by Siobhan Clinton’s family business in Newtown, Platin, Donore. The couple honeymooned in the Dominican Republic followed by a visit to Nicola’s former pad in New York. Photos by Damian Faulkner, Barndoor Studios

with Greg Leahy from Five Oaks, Drogheda

How long do you have it? I got it last May so that would be about 13 months! How old were you when you got your first car and what kind of car was it? It was the summer of 2007. I remember it well! I was 19 years old and it was a Citroen Saxo VTR. It cost me €3000. What a bargain! How often do you change your car? I change it every year and a half or whenever I get bored and want a new one. There is always something better. Best car you ever drove? It was a Honda Civic Type R. It belonged to a mate of mine. I drove it around the country roads and it’s just the business.

with Stephen Whearty from Drogheda What was your first bike and when did you start riding? A Suzuki X7 250. I was a teenager and I had been working on the strawberry fields in my spare time to save up the money, and then I went off and got one!

What is your dream car? An Aston Martin DB9 because it’s the sexiest, slickest car in the world! Or an Audi RS4; after seeing Jeremy Clarkson drive it on Top Gear I fell in love with it. I went for a spin in one before; it’s a very powerful car. Who is your insurer? Quinn Direct. I’ve been with them since my first car four years ago but they could do with lowering their prices! What’s on your CD player? Behind closed doors I’m a bit of a Garth Brooks fan but I mostly like driving around with my iPod on shuffle. Your perfect Sunday drive? Any relaxing drive in the countryside where traffic doesn’t exist. Who would be your dream passenger? Without a doubt James Corden because he is the funniest man alive or Georgie Thompson because she is hot!

What bike do you currently have and how long have you had it? I own a Suzuki Busa 1300, it’s a touring bike that I’ve had for three years now.

If you could pick anywhere in the world to take a trip on your bike where would it be? Probably the Route 66, while it’s still there! I What bike would be in your fantasy heard there is a lot of building going garage? I have it – my Suzuki Busa on, new roads and stuff. 1300! What habits of other road users do What protective gear do you wear? you find most annoying/dangerous? Full leathers... the usual gear you’d People not indicating! You just don’t have to have. know what they going to do next! Do you follow motorcycle Why do you think there are not racing? I do indeed. I’d watch the MotoGP and the World Superbike more women riding bikes? I have no idea! Maybe because of the costs Championship. We’d also follow involved in owning a bike and local races. Sometimes we’d go up getting it insured? to the North and I bring my CBR 600 race bike to do a few laps myself. Would you have any suggestions What is your favourite road/route to take a ride on? I like Druids Glen through Wicklow because of the scenery. The old road from Dublin to Galway is a nice one too.

for the RSA to improve safety for bikers? There should be training tracks for all road users, bikes and cars where you could learn the rules of the road.

Essential Drogheda would like to extend our condolances to the family and friends of Derek Brien who tragically died while racing at the Isle of Man TT Races. Derek was a well liked and respected racer and will be missed by all race fans. RIP Derek.

NEWS

Welcome Mr President! There was excitement in the air as a packed audience awaited the news of who their new Chamber President would be at the Drogheda & District Chamber’s AGM recently. Once the formalities of the evening were observed there were great applause as Mr Padraic Kierans, MD of both Anglo Printers and Essential, accepted his new role and the chains of presidency were passed down from Graham Hughes to Padraic. Drogheda born and bred, Padraic addressed the crowd with an extremely uplifting address. He acknowledged that the Chamber had a lot of work to do, to better communicate with their members and to be more vocal on everyday issues effecting businesses. He is actively involved in the Rates Campaign and will continue to fight this battle, but

Do you have a mantra in life? Work hard and play hard!

this is not the only issue on the table for businesses. Padraic said: ‘We must push our policies on those who will listen, but more importantly on those who will not.’ The evening concluded with friends and colleagues catching up over a summer BBQ in the d hotel.

Boxing is Back! Due to the phenomenal response to last year’s Whitecollar Boxing Event the Chamber is delighted to announce that it will be running another boxing event this coming October. The launch will take place in August where full details of the event will be given, but if you are up for a challenge and would like to get fit and test your endurance then call the Chamber to register your interest on 041-9833544.

Fabrizio Palomba of Simona Café, South Quay, Marsh Road dishes up

some light and flavoursome salads to get you in that summer mood!

Potato Gnocchi in Pesto Alla Genovese Serves 4 Gnocchi Ingredients: 400g plain flour 400g potatoes 1 egg Pinch of salt Pesto Ingredients: 100g basil leaves 30g pine nuts 2 garlic cloves 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese 1 tbsp grated pecorino romano cheese 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Pinch of salt Method: 1. Mix all of the pesto ingredients together in a food processor and pound. 2. Place in a jar covered with a layer of olive oil and refrigerate. 3. Place potatoes (with the skins on) in a pan of cold water and cover. 4. Bring to the boil and cook for 15 minutes until fully cooked. Allow to cool before peeling skins off and mashing. 5. Next sieve flour onto a clean surface and make a hole in the middle. Add the potato, egg and salt to the centre, and with your hands make it into a dough. 6. Divide the dough into 4 portions. Working with one portion at a time, roll out onto the floured surface to make a rope about 2cm thick. Cut the rope into 2cm lengths. 7. Take one piece of dough and press your finger surface over the tines of a fork to make deep ridges. 8. Fold the outer lips in towards each other to make a hollow in the middle. Continue with the remaining dough. 9. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Place the gnocchi in batches (about 20 at a time). Stir gently and return to the boil. 10. Cook for 2 minutes or until they rise to the surface and remove them with a slotted spoon, drain and put in greased shallow casserole or baking tray. Pour pesto sauce over gnocchi and serve.

riginally from Cassino in Central Italy, Simona and Fabrizio Palomba set up home in Drogheda eight years ago making a name for themselves in popular eateries around town. The pair eventually opened their own Italian-style café and deli in January this year and they haven’t looked back since. Simona’s pride themselves on providing authentic Italian food in a warm, family-friendly environment – but without the price tag! Think freshly ground gourmet coffees, delicious Italian wines and beers, fine cured meats and cheeses, homemade cakes and pastas as well as pizzas by the slice at continental prices! The ingredients are directly sourced in their native Italy such as the pure olive oils that come straight from Fabrizio’s father’s family business and the scrumptious cold meats and sausages. The extensive menu means lunches are well catered for and all dishes are also available on an order and take out basis. The café is open from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturdays.

Dear Dermot, My employer has reduced my days from five days to two days per week. Do I have any legal rights? John Dear John, I understand that times are tough for both businesses and employees alike. Where an employer has reduced the weekly earnings, or the number of working hours, of an employee by half, you could be entitled to redundancy. This would depend on whether your employer has given you notice that the short time working hours are of a temporary nature. If your employer has not done so, you may be entitled to redundancy. You will need to have been working with your employer for a minimum of two continuous years (104 weeks) and, if you are entitled to redundancy, you will receive two weeks pay for every year worked plus a bonus weeks pay (capped at €600 per week regardless of if your wages per week are more than this). The National Employment Rights Authority (NERA) give free advice to employers and employees regarding employment rights and may be contacted on 1890 80 80 90 or www.employmentrights.ie. In the meantime, you should also contact your Social Welfare office as you may be entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit.

Best training tip: Put your oar in the water at the same time as the stroke oarsman, who sets the pace, pull with the same strength, take it out, pause and return to the starting position in time with him also. Timing and technique is paramount to a good row, not strength. Best way to unwind after a training session: I enjoy a game of handball afterwards

because I am already well warmed up and it gives me a slight advantage over my opponent, for the first game anyhow! It also gives me the chance to unwind slowly over an hour and a half or so. Some of the other lads cycle, walk or swim or even go to spinning classes. Best reason for taking up rowing as a hobby: It’s a great means of keeping active and fit. It is great for the heart and head out on the open water. Not so good for the hindquarters, you may get used to the calluses on the hands but never on your arse! Best drink after coming off the boat: After the obligatory litre of water or juice, you can’t beat a pint of stout. Just the one mind you, no point in undoing all the good work you have done. It is full of iron and as the saying goes, it’s good for you! Best snack: I know I should say carbs in the form of pasta or such but I must admit I crave chocolate and sugar coated jellies. Don’t ask me why, I don’t have a sweet tooth ordinarily! Best hideaway when you want to escape from the training: There is no hiding from it! Between the 15 of us training, someone will always find you. I’m joking of course. There is no desire to hide, we only have a short time remaining to train and everyone enjoys being in the boat, so that’s where we are between five and seven hours a week. Best thing about living in Drogheda: The best thing about Drogheda is undoubtedly its people, the characters. People are what make a community great. Everyone who sacrifices their own time for the betterment of our community.

The Oars of Hope team, consisting of 15 novice rowers, take on the challenge to row from the Isle of Man to the Boyne River Banks in Drogheda in approximately 20 hours in order to raise much-needed funds for local charities. The funds will be divided between the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue & Recovery Service, the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre and Drogheda Youth Development. The rowing challenge will start on Friday, July 29th, 9pm, over the August Bank Holiday weekend. You can make a donation, through the AIB Bank: Sort Code 932094, Deposit Account No: 51369099. You can log onto the facebook page ‘Oars of Hope’ to find out when and where fundraising events are taking place to show your support and make a donation.
