have always believed we were a successful bunch in these parts – and this issue simply reaffirms my belief! There is so much talent under our nose that it’s simply a matter of making time to look. This month E does exactly that... On page 12 we get a glimpse of the life of up-and-coming fashion model Siobhan McAuley from Mornington; we chat to local knitwear designer Edmund McNulty on page 46; and on pages 24&25 Drogheda man Mal Caffrey reveals why Caffrey’s Natural Stone is still going strong after 50 years in business. Walking Festival

Exploring what lies beneath! The Drogheda Walking Festival organisers are inviting you to join in and explore your town and surrounding areas by taking three historical walks, starting off with a walk through historical Drogheda on Friday, June 3rd, followed by the Brú na Boinne Walk on Saturday and the Battle of the Boyne Walk on Sunday, June 5th. Registration is on the first day from 7.15pm at the Drogheda Tourist Office, The Tholsel. Tickets are w5 and are guided by well-known local historian Liam Reilly.

It’s Samba time!

Drogheda Samba Festival, which celebrates its 18th birthday this year, will see a number of new developments, some of which could give new impetus to the local samba scene, said the director Phil Conyngham. ‘Our budget once again is rock bottom so we have to concentrate on innovation and working with performers who do not have money as their main motivation. We have been pleasantly surprised at the goodwill of all concerned and have come up with a few gems in the past few months.’ Probably the most pleasant surprise for the festival committee has been the discovery of a group of very musical Brazilians in the town who will be showcasing some of the music of their native land during the festival. ‘A development from this could be the reestablishment of the Drogheda Samba School in conjunction with the Samba Mamas band,’ added Phil.

A very unique samba band from West Fife in Scotland is also in this year’s lineup. Drumatik are a socially inclusive samba group, which have a large number of people with learning disabilities as members. One of their aims is to challenge the public perception of people with learning disabilities. They will also be doing workshops with service members of Malta Services while they are in Drogheda. ‘This group has been fundraising for the past two years so they could afford to travel to the festival and The d hotel is providing free accommodation for them for which we are very grateful,’ said Phil. Meanwhile, down at the Old Abbey Studios a group of dancers are hard at work developing a new form of carnival dance combining hip hop and samba under the direction of Tracey Martin. ‘This has been made possible by a Failte Ireland/Arts Council

grant aimed at adding something new to the festival,’ said Phil. Also new to the line-up is an exhibition of samba paintings by Navan-based woman Sharon Maher-Bodalo in the Highlanes Gallery. Sharon and her husband Dorian have never missed a samba festival and even spent their honeymoon at it some years ago! ‘Of course most of the community samba groups in Ireland will be at the festival. They view it as their annual reunion and they all play for free – all we have to do is pay for their accommodation, which is really terrific,’ commented Phil. ‘The parade, Samba Mass, the outdoor music and dance in West Street will all take place as usual and there will be an exciting new Afrobeat group featured as well.’ The Samba Festival fringe entitled ‘Global Groves’ will see a wide range of late night world music sessions taking place in the Purple Room thanks to Niall Gregory and his crew. I also eat healthily and I don’t drink or smoke. Finally, do you have any beauty/skin care tips to look bright and fresh in the morning? Apply vitamin E oil or aloe vera on your face before going to sleep. In the morning, place a warm cloth on your face to bring colour to the cheeks, followed by cold aloe vera moisturizer. Place cucumber over eyes for five minutes, break in two and rub juices gently under the eye area. Your face should be glowing afterwards!

s summer is here it’s time to prepare our bodies for the holiday season – and getting a healthy dose of vitamin D and sun-kissed skin (protected with the appropriate SPF, of course) is well within reach. However, even the Irish sun can be harmful on all skin tones but especially on soft paler skin. The only alternative is of course fake tan to use at home. Hallelujah for at-home self-tanners! And there is so much choice too, from tanning towelettes, gels, milks, aerosols, mousses and creams. So which one do you choose? You don’t have enough skin to test them all, so I have done the (tanned) ‘leg’ work for you. So for anybody that knows me, you may have noticed I have been looking prematurely and slightly over-tanned this season it was all in the name of beauty research! One thing I noticed: the cheaper the product, the more of this infamous smell you’ll have, and the pricier the product, the less it was a problem. I narrowed it down to what appears to be the best (or at least most liked) splurge-worthy varieties and must-have steals.

The Application Process

Before beginning the application process, exfoliate thoroughly the day before with a body scrub, exfoliating mitt or body brush. This will remove any of those dead skin cells that cause patchiness and uneven application. Self-tanning novices are best off using an easy-to-control mousse or gel with a wash-off cosmetic tint. The advantage is that you can see what you’re doing, and you won’t miss any spots. For self-tanning enthusiasts, however, an aerosol spray is the best option as it’s quicker and you can just throw a towel down in your shower and go for it! Always pay close attention to what areas you’ve covered. Start from the bottom of your body and work your way up so that you don’t crease the colour when you bend over, and always keep the bottle and wrist moving for an even application.

Contouring Secrets:

Slim, Boost, and Define!

I’m going to share a little trade secret on how to use your tan and bronzer to slim, boost and define! To make cleavage worthy of a Victoria’s Secret catalogue, don your favourite push-up bra a half hour after applying self-tanner. Next, use an aerosol spray tanner and mist the M-shaped indentation created by the bra. Spraying on this second coat will make the area appear darker and more defined! Practise this at least once with a bronzer before doing it with your tanner! To thin your thighs use a powder body bronzer or long-wearing gel product to darken the sides: darker skin on either side absorbs more light than it reflects and makes the sides of the legs recede. To further draw the eye inward, apply highlighting powder down the centre! Et voilá! 18

Organisers hope to attract more than 500 runners to compete in this inaugural run which is in aid of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and the Clogherhead Prawn Festival. Bryan McCarthy weds Barbara Kelly Gardai Barbara Kelly and Bryan McCarthy were working together down the country in Shannon, when they first caught each other’s eye. It wasn’t until Barbara was transferred to Meath, leaving Bryan behind, that they realised how much they really missed each other! However, it took another four years for Bryan to join Barbara. He organised a romantic trip to the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cavan to pop the question, but being the traditional gentleman, he asked Barbara’s father for permission first. They finally got married on a warm September’s day in St Patrick’s Church, Slane before greeting the rest of their 175 guests at the elegant Millhouse nearby. Barbara wore a bespoke French lace dress designed by local girl Edel Tuite, while the flowers were organised by The Flower Yard, Mornington. Barbara’s best pal Lynsey and her band Santoria looked after the music, while Barbara’s musical dad Paul also took to the stage to sing a few songs of his own! The bridesmaids were Barbara’s sister Joanna Byrne, as well as Sarah Daly and Dearbhla Nolan. The groomsmen duties went to Bryan’s three brothers Ciaron, Eugene and Niall. Six-year old Ruby Byrne and three-year-old Robin Kelly were the pretty flowergirls while four-year-old Taylor Byrne was the brave pageboy! Conor Lally weds Yvonne O’Sullivan Drogheda lass Yvonne O’Sullivan spotted Bettystown man Conor Lally seven years ago then they were both working in their respective shops in the Drogheda Town Centre. Taking the initiative to ask Conor out served her well indeed as she now calls herself a Lally too! The pair got married on May 1st last in the Sacred Heart Church in Kilmainham Wood before heading to the Station House Hotel, Kilmessan to celebrate the occasion with their 130 guests. Yvonne, who wore a Benjamin Roberts dress by Modern Fashions, Dundalk, even showed off her flower arranging skills creating the flowergirl’s, the bridesmaids’ and the buttonhole bouquets! The bridesmaids were Yvonne’s cousin Sabrina Burke, as well as Barbara Neilon and Lorna McEnteggart. The groomsmen were Conor’s former school mate Dermot Lynn, his brother Michael and his friend Eric Burke. Seven-year-old Eabha Kelly was the charming flowergirl. The Kaye Twins and Powerhouse Brass Band, with their unique big brass sound, entertained everyone until the early hours of the morning. After heading to Malta for their honeymoon the couple are now settling into married life in Nobber, Co. Meath.

Darren McConnon weds Sadhbh McGee Sadhbh was studying for her Leaving Cert when she caught the eye of fellow student Darren McConnon in September 2002. A few years on and Darren decided to pop the question on London’s Tower Bridge during a weekend away. The couple eventually tied the knot on December 29th, 2010 in St Finian’s Church, Dillonstown, Togher, which saw Sadhbh wearing a laced vintage dress by Sylvia Rose from The Bridal Studio, Drogheda before heading to romantic Darver Castle in Darren’s granddad Benny McConnon’s 1938 Morris 10 vintage car. Sadhbh’s bridesmaids were Susan McDonnell, who was chief bridesmaid, as well as Marie Murphy and Molly Furhman. Bernard McConnon was bestman while Kieran Dunne and Oisin McGee were groomsmen. Twins Grainne and Ursula McDonnell were flowergirls, and twoyear-old Cillian Matthews was pageboy. The happy couple, who live in Dunleer, jetted off to Miami for their honeymoon, before embarking on a memorable Caribbean cruise and paying hip New York a visit thereafter. Conor Russell weds Sandra Davis Sandra, who met Conor through a mutual friend, had organised a surprise romantic weekend to Paris for his birthday on January 14th, 2010 when she learned that he had plans of his own to mark the particular occasion! While dining in a cosy Parisian restaurant Conor proposed to a startled Sandra, and a year later on February 12th they walked down the aisle in Ballapousta Church, Ardee. A reception followed in Cabra Castle where Electric Avenue entertained the guests (among them some wedding crashers!). Sandra – who wore a Stephanie Allin French lace bolero dress – was accompanied by her bridesmaids Elaine Kieran and Geraldine McConnon. Conor meanwhile had groomsmen Gerry O’Callaghan and Alan Harnett as well as his daughter and flowergirl eight-year-old Colleen to calm his nerves! How long do you have it? I have had it for about 18 months. It’s got a Honda engine and 174 horsepower. The Mini that won the Monte Carlo had 100 horsepower! How old were you when you got your first car? I was 30 believe it or not! I have always been an avid motorcyclist throughout the years but after a bad motorcycle accident I had to kind of give it up, so my interest turned to cars. The first car I got was a Peugeot 205 with a 1.2L engine, which I changed to a Diesel 1.9L engine.

Who is your insurer? Chartis, they’re doing specific/tailored policies for classic vintage cars. What’s on your CD player? I listen to my iPod, old school rock, AC/DC and the like. Your perfect Sunday drive? I am in the Irish Mini Owners Club and we actually go for a drive around the country somewhere every second Sunday a month, which is great! I have done pretty much all of Ireland on my motorcycle, to do it in a vintage car is a different but very enjoyable experience.

How often do you change your car? I’m in for the long haul. I have had a few cars since the Peugeot but I generally only change them when I have to. This is my third Mini. I can’t see myself changing soon. Best car you ever drove? Without a doubt my own car – it’s my baby!

It’s a new bike, a TM250 FourStroke Bike. It’s a racing bike for competitions only. I don’t ride the road at all; I am only involved in rally racing. his month we have been driving something of a revolution, because we have had our first extended period in Nissan’s new all-electric LEAF. The car has been one of the most talked about cars for some time, but we finally got set free in the car to try it out properly and see what it would be like to live with a car such as this. The surprising news is that is actually feels very normal. Our test car was black, so it looked like a normal car aside from some blue badging and the fact that when you jump inside, it is adorned with lots of screens and buttons. Press the start button and it is more like starting up a laptop than a car, as there are lots of bongs and bings and then silence. Without the usual audio clues, the electric car feels quite weird and this is something that will take some getting used to. With the car fully charged the LEAF was telling us that we had a potential range of 140km, which seemed fine. But switch on the air conditioning on what was a hot day and this drops rapidly. But this aside, driving the LEAF feels really no different to driving a standard car aside from the fact that it is so quiet. The 80kw electric motor is akin to a 108hp combustion engine and it will cost you around €2 of home electricity to fully charge the LEAF, which is quite remarkable. Trying to keep an eye on the amount of charge you have left does cause some anxiety, especially as it goes into the lower range, but you soon get used to this and while there is a lack of visible on-street charging points yet, the announcement of fast-charging points on the main urban routes is likely to be welcomed by those who wish to take their EVs outside the city limits. As a piece of technology, the LEAF is nothing short of remarkable and well worth the €30,000 price tag given that it is so innovative. This price tag includes a €5,000 grant which is place until the end of 2012.

I was working in a solicitor’s office in Ballsbridge and last summer we finally decided to take the plunge. What are the ‘pet hates’ in the workplace? Dirt! If I walk through the doors and the place isn’t standing to attention, my blood boils. If you could change anything in the town what would it be? Two things spring to mind…I would love to see businesses on West Street and Narrow West Street thriving again. Secondly, I would love to see less violence on the streets. It’s a shame but Drogheda is not a safe place to be at night. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I have no idea. I take nothing for granted and have learned to take each day as it comes. You never know what lies around the bend!

Dear Margaret, Thank you for your letter. I am sorry to hear that you have split up from your husband. You have not told me if the separation was amicable. If it was, I would recommend that you try to agree the terms of access (when your husband may see the children) and maintenance (how much your husband will pay each week or month in support of you and your children) between you and your husband, without outside help. If you cannot agree on these points, your alternative may be Mediation or to seek an Order from the Court. Mediation is where an impartial person will listen to both you and your husband and attempt to assist both of you in coming to some form of agreement on these matters. Accord Care Services offer free Mediation and marriage counselling and may be contacted on 041-9843860 or by emailing accorddrogheda@ eircom.net. If agreement cannot be agreed, a Court Order may be sought whereby the District Court Judge will order your husband to pay a fixed amount on a weekly or monthly basis and will set arrangements for access. The most important thing is to put the interests of your two children first. I hope this answered your question.

What’s on in

The Johnston’s Music Festival, Friday, June 24th-Sunday,

June 26th, various times and venues The Johnston’s – Adrienne, Lucy and brother Michael – were a talented family singing group from Slane during the ’60s. They went on to perform very successfully throughout Ireland and the UK, recording hits such as ‘The Travelling People’ and the ‘The Curragh of Kildare’ before splitting up in 1973. This nostalgic festival begins on the Friday at 5pm with a launch in The Boyne Valley Inn, Slane, followed by reception at 9pm in the newly-opened Poet’s Rest. A Gala Concert - featuring Paul Brady and Mick Moloney - takes place in the TLT on the Saturday, 8pm (tickets €30), while on the Sunday a Festival Folk Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Slane at 11am will be followed by street activities and open air gigs in the afternoon.

There is a great sense of achievement when someone appreciates and wears your work too. I also get to travel each year to Florence in Italy to meet with my yarn suppliers.
