t’s a very proud month for Drogheda as one of its actor sons, Colin O’Donoghue, hits the big time with the release of his debut Hollywood movie, The Rite. Turn to page 13 where Colin recalls the moment he walked the ‘black’ carpet at the US premiere. Football legend John Giles is busy touring the country promoting The John Giles’ Foundation ‘Walk of Dreams’ which takes place at various locations nationwide on March 27th. E chats to the great man himself on page 38. If ever you needed proof that recycling your old jewellery was the way forward, turn to pages 20 & 21 where I visit Bernard English Goldsmith on West Street for a sneak peak of bespoke designs.

Ones to watch...
The Fashion Designer Niamh Garry set up her studio at Barlow House, Narrow West Street, last November. Having trained at the Grafton Academy of Dress Designing for four years, the designer went on to work under the expertise of top designers Julien Macdonald and Christopher Kane in London. These days she is putting her training to good use by designing her own evening wear collection...

I
Essential takes a closer look at local talent who are making their mark
moved home from London last year after I lost my job. I had been living there for four years and gained very good experience. I even participated in London Fashion Week which was brilliant! But I decided that if I didn’t set up on my own then I never would so I decided to just go for it. At first I started doing alterations from home and began making dresses for family and friends. When I completed a Start Your Own Business Course with Louth Enterprise Board I applied for a €10,000 grant – and I got it! I couldn’t believe it! It meant I could start looking for my own premises – and be taken more serious as a designer. I’ve begun working on my own collection now and going forward my aim is to get it into local shops at first, then nationally and internationally.
I’d like to think I can create a bit of employment also because I won’t be able to do it all myself! The inspiration for my designs can literally come from anything. Not so long ago I was at the Galway Races and I found the style very inspiring. I was also blown away by the g hotel as the interior is designed by Philip Treacy. I used to design bridal gowns but I’m concentrating on evening wear and cocktail dresses now because it’s more my thing! I feel happiest doing them. I’m lucky that my family are hugely supportive and I can always rely on them to tell me the truth about my designs. Recently, I showcased my work at the Madhatters Fashion Show in the Gibson Hotel in Dublin and it was fantastic. It made me realise just how badly I want this!

Beauty
I
Emma Woods’ beauty tips that every teen should know
n most cases, teen beauty interest begins early in childhood (well, it did for me anyway!) From the days of dress up and play pretend, to the experiments with the magic of make-up transformation. But if only I knew then what I know now! To truly enhance teen beauty, make-up is not necessary. The idea is to look pretty, not painted. That is why I feel teen make-up should be limited to only lip gloss, mascara, blush and concealer/blemish cover up. I recommend soft coverage foundations and a good concealer. The correct colour of your foundation is as important as your coverage; foundation is there to smooth the appearance of your skin not to change its colour! Add colour with bronzers and blushers. Remember, let your natural youthful glow shine through, not your make-up products.
Basic teen beauty steps:

• Keeping your skin healthy will be your best beauty product. Get in the practice of cleansing your skin, morning and night, and always removing your make-up before going to bed. If you need to figure out what kind of skin type you have I suggest booking a mini facial where a therapist can do a skin analysis to determine your skin type and advise you of any special treatment for conditions such as acne and dehydration. La Spa Therapie is actually running a special offer for Essential’s teenage readers this month. You can get a free skin analysis with every mini facial for just €25! • Cover up any eye circles with concealer. Dab a small amount along the under eye area, then with a soft fluffy brush blend outwards. Next conceal any breakouts, 1 blotches or redness by applying a concealer directly on top of the area and blend outwards. Top Tip: use your blusher brush instead of your foundation brush for a more airbrushed finish. (Try Fuschia’s Mineral Concealer, €21.50 (1), and ask an artist to assist in the colour choice suitable for you.) • Avoid an all over foundation – if you have significant acne or redness use 4 a sheer formula or tinted moisturizer (La Roche Posay Tinted Moisturiser, €19.99, Superpharm) (2), then spot cover with a foundation stick. Benefit Play Sticks Cream (available in Brown Thomas) are expensive at €37.50 (3) but it is the real deal. I believe this is the best foundation stick on the market today. 5 Seal with an all over loose face powder. (Try Fuschia’s Mineral Powder, €26 (4), for a perfect finish). • Lightly colour eyelids with a sheer neutral eyeshadow such as Bourjois Ombre a Paupieres in Beige Rose, €7.99, Maher’s Chemist, West Street. (5) • For a natural flush try using a bronzer or blush. Rimmel’s Sun Dance 9 Bronzer 027 (available in Boots, Laurence Town Centre) is perfect at just €5.99. (6) • Apply mascara; I like XXL Pro Mascara by Maybelline, €12.99, available in Hickey’s Pharmacy, West St. (7) • I know black eyeliner is a key component to every teenage girl’s make-up bag, but do not layer it on without blending a little eye-shadow along the eyeliner. Alan Sweeney weds Paula Hicks This popular Drogheda couple met through a mutual friend back in 1999 but it was 11 years later on December 27th, 2010 that they finally tied the knot in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Termonfeckin. The celebrations continued in the Ballymascanlon House Hotel, Dundalk where a wonderful reception took place. The Sopranos and DJ Aiden McCullen entertained guests into the small hours of the night, especially those who travelled from the UK and Italy. Paula’s best friend Carol Breen was maid of honor, along with her two sisters Sarah and Aine and Alan’s sister Ellie. Alan’s bestman was Ian McCullen and the groomsmen were Kevin Bonner, Barry Matthews and Joe Greene. Paula’s niece Eleanor Bolger was flowergirl and her nephew Cillian Bolger was pageboy. The bride and groom spent their honeymoon in South Africa and Mauritius. Photos by Suzanne Collins
David Flanagan weds Emma Black At just 14 Emma Black had already met her future husband! Emma is the daughter of Oliver and Noeleen Black and David is the son of David and Sandra Flanagan, all from Drogheda. Both the bride and groom had several family and friends who travelled home from the UK to share their big day. Emma was assisted by her bridesmaids Karen Coyle, Sarah Black, Paula Black and Linda Flanagan. The bestmen were Damien Coyle, Andrew Black, Justin Murphy and Aaron Kennedy. Shane Callaghan weds Sandra Ennis It was on Friday, December 10th, 2010 that Sandra Ennis and Shane Callaghan said their wedding vows in St Cianan’s Church, Duleek, followed by a reception in Trim Castle Hotel. When they got engaged in May last year, and decided to get married in December no one could have predicted that Ireland would have the coldest winter since records began. With family and friends travelling from England and the west of Ireland, the weather meant that some of their guests were unable to attend their big day. Sandra is the daughter of Brendan and Carmel Ennis from Duleek. Her only sister Kathryn was her bridesmaid, along with her best friend Aoife O’Neill. Shane is the youngest of the Callaghan family and is the son of Ann and Gerrard. His bestmen were his brother Gary and Stephen Melia. Following their wedding, with travel chaos throughout the country, the couple spent a couple of nights in the Radisson Farnham Hotel, Co. Cavan. They’re planning to enjoy a honeymoon in America this summer. Photos by Gillian McEnteggart

Tomas White weds Niamh Lenehan It was a summer job that brought Ardcath newlyweds Niamh and Tomas first together. The couple married on December 17th last in St Theresa’s Church, Bellewstown and what started as a beautiful sunny day strangely ended up being a snowy night. Their reception was held in The Headford in Kells where Band Catch 22 provided the music into the night. Chief bridesmaid was Susan Howard along with Niamh’s sisters Roisin and Orla. The bestman was Enda Murphy while Tomas’ brothers Derek and Paul were groomsmen. It was a very proud day for both sets of parents, Jim and Patricia Lenehen and Thomas and Dolores White. The happy couple spent a few days of their honeymoon in Florida followed by a Caribbean Cruise. Photos by Suzanne Collins

Furniture
If you aren’t inclined to move your artwork, look at how you can reposition your room layout. Take out most of the furniture in the room and start again, bringing back a major piece (like a lounge) and then some accessories such as a rug or lamp and then slowly bring back the rest of the furniture. You might like the new feeling of space and put some pieces in another room.
Flooring Thread-bare carpets and ‘traffic patterns’ wearing into your flooring is a major turn off. An update to your flooring might not be needed to the whole house so look at the prominent areas such as your entry and lounge. This could be enough to give a lift from the bottom up. &INEST (AND -ADE /RCHIDS AND &LOWERS DIRECT FROM THE /RIENT

Lighting Subtle and indirect lighting can create a whole new atmosphere to an interior scheme and it doesn’t just have to be for evenings. Dark corners of rooms can be brought to life with a simple lamp. You don’t have to always highlight large areas, look at subtle ways to introduce light such as back lighting a statue or plant. An interesting lamp can double as a feature as well as lighting.

Spring cleaning always comes to mind this time of year. Unless you have an emotional attachment to collections that are gathering dust, pack it away or move it on permanently. This is the perfect time to make decisions about what is necessary and what is taking up valuable space.

Life through a lens Terry Collins gets to grips with Canon’s newest piece of kit – and is not disappointed! CANON EF 70MM300MM F4-5.6 IS USM One of the latest additions to the Canon lens family is the new EF 70mm-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. This is aimed mainly at enthusiast photographers and is part of Canon’s impressive L series of lenses that are popular with photography buffs throughout the world. This lens has only become available in Europe after its launch in the US last autumn. When this lens was originally launched in the US the reaction was probably not what Canon expected with magazines, blogs and forums being quite negative. Canon would have been forgiven if they were initially worried, but they needn’t have been, as demand for the lens had them working overtime to keep it on the shelves of leading photography outlets. This was obviously a case of a manufacturer being in touch with the needs and aspirations of their loyal customer base. When it finally arrived in Maher’s Photographic department I was delighted when manager Seamus Counihan offered me the chance to test drive the eye-catching piece of kit. The only downside was that the weather was pretty miserable and I had to make do with a stroll around Drogheda in less than favourable conditions. That said I was not disappointed with the performance and I was pleasantly surprised with the zoom and autofocus features working quite well on a dull wintery day. Working on manual settings (500asa-250sec-F8 & spot

Top 5
fuel-efficient cars By Paddy Comyn of completecar.ie
2. Skoda Fabia GreenLine: 83.1mpg
1. Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion: 83.1mpg The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion is an astonishing car for lots of reasons. It shows that you don’t have to have a hybrid to have outstanding fuel economy. Using an ultra frugal 1.2-litre diesel engine, stop/start technology and clever gearing and aerodynamics, the Polo BlueMotion is well equipped too.
Using the same technology as the Polo BlueMotion, the Fabia GreenLine is another fuel-sipping car. A new look, but primarily technical changes contributing to a reduction in consumption and emissions of pollutants, are the most valuable things that the second generation Fabia GreenLine offers customers. The most fundamental innovations are the new 1.2 TDI CR engine, a start/stop system and a brake energy recuperation system. The start/stop and recuperation system are being used for the first time in a mass-produced Skoda.
5. Mini Cooper D: 72.4mpg 3. Volvo S40 1.6 DRIVe Stop/ Start: 72.4mpg With dynamic design, high quality, first class safety and low CO2 emissions, the Volvo S40 DRIVe saloon appeals to customers who are environmentally conscious but still demand a car that combines the practicality of a four-door saloon with the style, comfort and refinement afforded by a premium marque. This is the most fuel-sipping car in the segment and would make a great family car.
4. Toyota Prius: 72.4mpg The Prius is well known as being one of the cleanest cars on the road and it is the most fuel-efficient car that uses a petrol engine. In its third generation, the Prius now looks much better than before and it is a better car to drive. There will be a plug-in version coming out next year as well as a larger MPV version in the future too.
You might think that a premium small car would not necessarily be able to impress when it comes to fuel economy but the Mini Cooper D uses the best that BMW now have in their arsenal when it comes to being frugal. It uses a clean 1.6-litre diesel and stop/start technology, as well as a new diesel particulate filter to make this easily sit in the top 5 fuel saving cars. Completecar.ie is the free, independent motoring advice website where you can get help straight from the experts, as well as the latest news, reviews and videos.

Over the coming months we will strive to answer your financial queries and each question that is published will receive a medal-winning Bordeaux.
Your Questions Answered
Q I have a rental property, what expenses can I claim? John, Baltray Any costs that are directly attributable to your rental property may be claimed. If you pay rent for the property, water rates, Arefuse collection charges, gas, electricity or cable television, keep all your receipts and invoices as these are expenses that can be claimed. Landlords incur sometimes crippling costs maintaining and insuring their premises and this cost-burden can be reduced by claiming these items back. Other qualifying expenses include legal fees to cover the drawing up of leases or the issue of solicitors’ letters; accountancy fees for rental income accounts as well as wear and tear on furniture and fittings, e.g. carpets, cookers, central heating etc. of making a private pension contribution. What Q Itaxwasreliefthinking is available in 2011? Siobhan, Drogheda tax relief for pension contributions paid will remain at: A Income • 41 percent for 2011 • 34 percent in 2012 • 27 percent in 2013 • 20 percent by 2014 It is possible to pay in at 41% for 2010 up to 31st October 2011. As can be seen from above, 2011 is the best year to make pension contributions. However, if Fine Gael comes to power, they propose a levy on pension funds as an alternative to the current arrangement. The personal pension contributions earnings cap has been reduced from €150,000 to €115,000 as of January 1st, 2011. Individuals can elect for pension contribution to be treated as made in the previous year in certain cases. The lower earnings cap will apply. Employee social security relief for personal pension contributions has been abolished. The contributions made to pension schemes from 1 January 2011, will be liable to the USC. Can you give us a brief job description? Hmmm! I suppose my job description ranges from meeting our customers and suppliers to managing the finances and making the coffee; Ria Meeganmy business partner likes her coffee! What inspired you to get into this field? Well, I lived in the Far East for a while a few years back and was always on the look out for something to come home with and set up a small business. Ria and Seamus were on a visit to the Far East and we met up a few times. Over dinner one night Ria was looking at some of the handmade silk flowers in the restaurant and commented that she had not seen such quality since her time in New York and it sort of bloomed from there… pardon the pun!
people come into our Factory Shop, bend over a vase of flowers and sniff! The most satisfying aspect has to be meeting a bride and groom to go through what they want for their wedding day. Ria tends to look after that end of the business, but I have to confess I enjoy meeting with them too. We had a couple in recently who were quoted x1,200 for their wedding package in fresh flowers. We rented them the same package for x400 and that included the purchase of four bouquets to keep as a reminder of the day.
Small Talk with Kevin Smith

Who do you most admire? It would have to be my dad, Tony, or ‘Pops’ as my friends call him! He took over the family business at a very young age after the death of his dad, and at 16 he headed for Cork where he trained with Ford and came back to pick up where my grandad left off. He managed to keep it going and hand it over to my brother who today is doing the same thing. Smiths of Drogheda are 75 years old this year and I am very proud of my dad. What was your first job and how much did you earn? Well, apart from the family business where I worked all through school, my first real job was for Crazy Prices in Tallaght. I forgot how much I earned, whatever the minimum wage was in 1990.

cknowledged as one of the greatest and original cuisines of the world, Asian food has never been more popular. But the days of a Chinese take-away being a once-a-week treat are over as the art of Asian cooking moves quickly from the restaurants into home kitchens. This month Trevor Yiu, manager of Tango Asian Cuisine Restaurant, located at Drogheda Leisure Park on Rathmullan Road, happily shares some culinary delights from Tango’s kitchen. Open three years, Tango’s has gained a loyal following in the northeast with diners particularly fond of the ‘All You Can Eat’ menu. Trevor says: ‘In a recession we are constantly striving to provide our customers with a good value menu – and we’ve more to come!’ To reserve your table at Tango’s phone 041-983 5054.

Exhibition Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh,
Saturday, March 12th – April 19th, Highlanes Gallery This new exhibition of work by painter Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh explores the subtle relationships of spaces, intersections, fissures and lacunas between forms and objects. Sinéad communicates the process of constructing an image with punctuated colour and geometry of reserved canvasses. The intricacies of perceiving the same object by an artist and a viewer underline the vast variance of surrounding images. The artist is balancing on the indefinable border between our reality and the world depicted in her art and where the two meet. Admission is free, suggested donation €2. www.highlanes.ie

The Best
of Everything
with Republic of Ireland and Leeds United legend Best game you’ve ever played in an Irish jersey: I have been privileged to play for my country 59 times. It was always an honour to pull on the green jersey but without doubt my most memorable game for the Republic of Ireland was my international debut against Sweden in Dalymount Park in November 1959. I was just 18 years old and scored in a game which we won 3-2. The newspapers the next day described our display as dazzling and that Ireland had found a new star. That was an incredible feeling. Best goal playing for Leeds: Having scored 115 goals for Leeds United in a 12year career at Elland Road there are quite a few contenders. However, the goal I consider my best came against our fierce rivals of the early 70’s, Derby County. Derby were the league champions in 1972 (having deprived Leeds of the title) and when they came to Elland Road in November of that year we were fired up to play our best. I scored twice that day in a 5-0 trouncing, the second of which was a long range rasper that I can still see vividly to this day. There’s no better feeling for a footballer than to score a great goal. Best footballer you’ve ever played with: The players at Leeds United were an amazingly talented group but before I joined Leeds I had spent nearly six seasons at Old Trafford with Manchester United. The player who I regard as the best is Bobby Charlton. Bobby had it all, skill, flair, determination and natural awareness. He was one of a kind and I left Man Utd before a young George Best broke into the side. Best career moment: Having come up from the Second Division with Leeds United we knew we were onto something special under manager Don Revie. We won the League Championship in the 38

Both are intensely knowledgeable and the Soviet Union were in the middle of and passionate about The Cold War. An exhilarating read. Best manager you’ve worked with: During my career at Leeds the man who was responsible for the amazing success there was Don Revie. Don knew a great player when he saw one (he did after all sign me from Man United!) and his management skills were second to none. I loved playing for him and I was really sad when he left Leeds in 1974 to take over the England job.
Best film: I love the Godfather movies (1&2). With so many great movies made down through the decades it’s hard to say which is the best but I must give a mention to a great cowboy movie called ‘Shane’ which starred Alan Ladd.
Best way to unwind: There’s nothing better than a day’s golf. A lot of professional footballers take up golf and I was no exception. Unfortunately, my Best hideaway: With golf playing such an important part of my life handicap now isn’t what it was back then but I I would have to say Hollystown Golf Course.
