Leitrim comedian Katherine Lynch brings Sheila Chic, Bernie Walsh and Liz Hurley to the E table and reveals what she really thinks of co-presenter Brian Dowling on page 9. At last the promise of warmer days is here... and we couldn’t be happier! While it’s not warm enough to don our full-on summer gear just yet, on page 12 stylist Caroline McElroy shows how layering is the way to go over the coming weeks. best of what May has to offer
Step back in time Going back in time and appreciating some of the historic pieces on display at the newly opened Muriel Gahan Museum at An Grianán, Termonfeckin. The museum – dedicated to Dr Muriel Gahan, an instrumental figure in the development of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association and indeed the country markets that we see in towns nationwide today – features traditional Irish crafts and tools, such as carding implements, spinning wheels, and a selection of Sugán chairs. The accompanying Gatehouse Coffee Shop is a nice addition too!
Motorshow Taking a peek at the world’s finest super cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s alongside the modern day classics such as BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus to name but a few! Motorbike enthusiasts will also be happy to see the Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters Club showcasing their greatest two-wheel machines too. The show takes place in the City North Hotel car park on Sunday, May 15th from 11.30am to 5pm with plenty of exhibition stands and children’s entertainment to add to the fun. Entry is free and all proceeds go to the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. www.almcmotorshow.com
Kings of the Castle
Digging out your favourite Kings of Leon tracks before the American rockers headline Slane Castle on May 29th. The 30th anniversary celebrations promises to be a good one with Elbow, Thin Lizzy, White Lies, Mona and The Whigs all lined up too. If you weren’t lucky enough to get a ticket to Slane itself why not make a day of it at the Morning Star in Tullyallen where a Slane Memory Lane party, featuring music from past Slane legends, is on the cards. Count us in!
Spice it up! Country charm
Inviting your friends around for a ‘Curry Night In’ with a difference! Aruna Sauces are a new range of local artisan sauces produced by Sarajit Chanda and his wife Sarah Nic Lochlainn who operate the ever so popular Ardee eatery, Fuchsia House. Having just scooped the Best Overall Business Award at the Louth County Enterprise Awards, these Indian recipes are made from 100 per cent natural ingredients as well as being free from gluten, yeast, wheat and dairy. At just €3 a jar, visit fuchsiahouse.ie/aruna for your nearest stockists.
Getting the old bike out of the shed, packing a picnic basket and exploring the surrounding countryside. The City North Hotel recently launched two new local heritage trail routes commencing from the hotel grounds and taking in the quaint rural villages of Gormanston and Stamullen. These new cycling or walking trails feature a number of fascinating hidden heritage gems and can be enjoyed with an audio guided tour or just arrange a personal tour with a local historian if you wish. If you don’t have a bike or don’t want to make your own sandwiches don’t fret, bikes can be hired at the hotel and a picnic luncheon is also offered for the lazy at heart!

Beauty Shiseido ‘The Skincare’ Tinted Moisture Protection SPF 20 €36, Town Centre Pharmacy, West St, Drogheda. Just as you switch to breezy skirts and linen blouses, it’s just as important to dress your face with lighter make-up! The first step is to swap foundation for a tinted moisturizer. These sheer formulas look and feel airier on skin and are less likely to turn cakey on steamy days. Orofluido Shine Spray €14.95, Moda Vida, Stockwell St, Drogheda. For lifeless hair in need of a boost I can’t recommend this highly enough! Orofluido products contain essential natural oils and ingredients which add condition, shine and a brilliant healthy look immediately after use. Its vanilla scent is gorgeous too. Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick €26, Mahers Chemist, West St, Drogheda. In summer your blush should be light and transparent. This Clinique stick will instantly warm the complexion. What I love most is it is non-greasy and doesn’t blotch or streak!
Fuschia Mineral Foundation €26, Fuschia, Scotch Hall. Feeling a little too exposed? I recommend brushing powder mineral foundation over the tinted moisturizer in spots where you need a little extra coverage, for example on blemishes or areas of redness around your nose.
Summer
L’OREAL Shampoo €19, and Hair Masque, €35.30 available at Kazoo Hair Salon, Drogheda. Like skin, your hair is very much susceptible to damage. Chlorine used in the pool may give a greenish tinge to your hair while salt can dry it up. Wind and humidity on the beach can also frizz up your hair and may cause your hair colour to fade. To avoid all of this and more, shampoo your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner before going to the beach for a swim. After the swim, be sure to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the chemical and mineral build up in your hair.

Arbonne No Sun Intended Bronzing Powder €23, www. beautynetwork.myarbonne.co.uk or contact local Arbonne agent Romualda Petreikyte on 0851 577365. Bronzer makes your eyes look brighter, teeth whiter and the truth is most of us always look better with a little warmth added to our skin! To keep the results looking fresh and natural, I recommend applying bronzer just to the high points of your face, where the sun naturally hits you: forehead, cheekbones, chin, and nose. But be sure to choose a colour that is only two shades darker than your natural skin tone. I was fortunate to try out the Arbonne range of Swiss formulated skin products and loved the results! The powder contains no harmful preservatives or chemicals and it applies beautifully.
Scott Barnes Body Bling €38, www.scottbarnes.com. This moisturizing, shimmering body lotion is infinitely better than a self-tanner. It goes on smoothly, stays on, and washes off. I like it better than a spray tan, too – it saves time and money! Apply Body Bling to hide imperfections such as little veins, spots and uneven skin tone. Just cover the parts that show: legs, arms, shoulders and décolletage (no need to slather it on your whole body), and let it dry five to 10 minutes before dressing.
Fuschia Bronzer Brush €37, Fuschia, Scotch Hall. We all need one: a brush with long, loose, fluffy bristles! Anything densely packed will deposit too much colour. Be sure to sweep a little bronzer onto your neck and earlobes, especially if you have short hair or are wearing a pony¬tail. A tanned face that’s framed by pale ears will out you fast!
Body Shop Coconut Body Butter €19.95, Hickeys Pharmacy, West St, Drogheda. I’m sure you’ll agree, one sniff of this and it’s confirmation that summer is here! Boasting a host of celeb fans including Victoria and David Beckham, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lopez, I simply wouldn’t be without a Body Butter in my summer make-up bag. At Hickeys they are also offering a free Body Shop Shower Gel with every Coconut, Moringa and Strawberry Body Butter sold.
Katie Everitt of La Spa Therapie answers your questions
Got a beauty dilemma? Email Katie Everitt at info@essentialdrogheda.com with your query I have been waxing for quite some time and am beginning to suffer with in-grown hairs. Do you have any suggestions to keep this problem at bay? Niamh, Duleek Exfoliating the skin on a regular basis can help treat this by removing the upper layers of dead skin cells. By gently exfoliating a day after the wax and continuing to do so, a couple times a week depending on your skin and hair type, you will help keep dead skin cells out of the follicle. When the hair does start coming back, this helps it to point up instead of going back into the skin. 14

I was thinking of having laser teeth whitening done. Is this harmful and are there any side effects? Carol, Bettystown Teeth whitening is a very safe procedure. Our highly trained professionals use the same equipment as dentists and with the same high level of care. A small number of clients may experience increased sensitivity after the treatment but this lasts no longer than 48 hours.

Five Oaks, ‘I can’t wait to see the Kings of Leon, I was hoping they’d play last year but they didn’t. I’ve always wanted to see them play Slane. If I’d to pick someone else to play I’d love to see Lil Wayne or Jay-Z.’
Laytown, ‘I’m delighted that the Kings of Leon are playing, they’re brilliant. I’d love Eminem to play because I had tickets to the one he pulled out of. I really want to go see him.’

Drogheda, ‘The band I really wanted to play was s King of Leon so I’m delighted that they’re playing this year. I’d love if The Script played next year, it’d be great to have an Irish band headlining.’
Conor Campbell,
Donore, ‘I’ve never actually gone to Slane but I’ve been in the village while it was on. It’d be a great concert but the bands playing this year wouldn’t interest me. I’d definitely go if Take That were playing, I’m going to see them in June and I can’t wait.’
Adam Fallon, Ballsgrove, ‘I’m going to see the Kings of Leon this year but I’d most like to see The Strokes playing Slane. I’m a huge Kings of Leon fan, I’ve been into them a good few years now. I like Elbow as well, they’ll be a good supporting act.’
Aaron Walsh,

e g a m i r o r r i M Abandoning film was no hard task for photographer Terry Collins who recalls his first brush with digital
T
he first time I came across the Digital Camera Revolution was in the London Arena in 1997. The event organisers had corralled the photographers on to a purposely made platform about half way down the hall and I was using a Canon EOS 1 (Film camera). Beside me on the platform was a photographer working for the Daily Mirror and he was using the latest first digital professional camera which was a collaboration between Kodak and Nikon. The Mirror snapper had an assistant sitting at his feet and at the end of every round he handed the memory card to him to view the images on a laptop computer. By the end of the fourth round the assistant confirmed when they had 12 images fit for publishing before they packed up all their gear and promptly left the building. In contrast, I and all the other photographers - who where shooting colour slide film - were handling completed rolls to waiting motorcycle couriers who high-tailed it into London to waiting lab staff. Most of the other photographers and I were still in the arena until the early hours of the morning, and the next day the Daily Mirror had a two-page spread while all their competitors had only one back page image.
Get connected
Uploading pictures to the web from a camera phone is common place nowadays with consumers transferring images and video to social networking and image libraries. Generally speaking, the images from mobiles,
while acceptable, do not come near the quality of modem day prosumer type cameras like the Canon IXUS, available at Mahers on West Street. In recent weeks, the US based company Eye-Fi launched the latest version of their Mobile X2 wireless SD card that allows users to wirelessly connect cameras to their smartphones and tablets while running their soon-to-be available free apps. The card
itself has built-in wireless technology that gives you the ability to send pictures immediately to a web address or email account.
Movie magic
Microsoft’s Windows 7 contains Windows LIVE Movie Maker, not to be confused with ‘Windows Movie Maker’. It is a wonderful piece of software that is less complicated than most of the video software available. You can edit videos quickly and upload them directly to your YouTube account and is ideal for personal stuff or small businesses.

Antrim on her Nikon D90. Evanna falls in to the enthusiast category and is looking towards the continuous improvement of her photography shills and knowhow. In the picture are Stevie Kieran, Mark Keenan, Niall Hughes, Abigail Boylan, Maeve Fennin and Ciara Tyrrell.

aving trouble making ends meet? Well if it’s any consolation – you are not alone! A recent survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions has highlighted the true extent of hardship faced by Irish people today. • After paying their bills 750,000 people have just €70 left each month. • 210,000 are unable to cover their essential bills each month • 20% of people feel they have enough money to enjoy themselves each month. • 66% people feel their disposable income has fallen over the past 12 months. • 80% of people worry they couldn’t cope with unforeseen costs.

A IfThisyourelief was extended in Finance Act 2011 and is an essential support to individuals trying to create employment and reduce the unemployment burden on the state. The amount of PRSI paid by a company will determine the value of the relief. There will be a maximum of €5,000 per employee and a limit per company of €40,000. In the case of a qualifying start-up company where the corporation tax payable does not exceed €40,000, the tax bill will be reduced to zero. was thinking about buying a holiday home while property Q Iprices are low. What is the NPPR charge? Lorraine, Drogheda private residence (NPPR) is a charge that must be A Non-principal paid if you own a holiday home or a residence that isn’t where you normally reside. This charge was introduced in the emergency budget of 2008 and has raised €130 million in taxes. The NPPR currently stands at €200 per annum. Fine Gael and Labour have both stated their intention to increase this charge. Labour will push for a figure of €500 per annum but Fine Gael are likely to seek a smaller increase. It is important to remember that several exemptions exist. If you are in the process of moving house and temporarily own two properties the NPPR won’t apply. Other exemptions include a building liable to commercial rates; a mobile home or caravan; property occupied by a relative rent-free within 2km of your principal residence; divorce or judicial separation where spouse owns the principal private residence of their spouse.
It’s time to pick up the pieces and start afresh. Your fear of change rivets you to the past. Travel and a change of residence are possible.

Floral patterns remain a home fashion favourite and if you want to be on-trend, choose confident, large-scale designs in soft, faded or bolder colours. Look out for them on wallpaper, bed linen, cushions, rugs and tableware. They’ll work with the mid-century inspired furniture designs, Designer Guild - All collections as well as vintage and more available at niamhcarterdesigns.ie Brintons Floral Range contemporary pieces. ‘Poppy Dusk’ available The revival of florals in at TC Carpets, Dunleer decorating reflects the current movement toward bringing more and more of nature into the home. Contemporary florals will work in any room, but especially in living rooms or bedrooms where a softer, more relaxed feeling is desired. Keep in mind that small, repetitive floral patterns will look outdated, so avoid those designs unless the room is intended to be done in these styles. Consider using floral patterns as a room’s focal point. Create an accent wall in bold floral wallpaper, or choose a sofa with floral upholstery for the living room, or floral bed linens and curtains for a bedroom.
Coastal Style
This is a bold look that combines vibrant colours with contemporary design. Colours that lend themselves particularly well to this look are hot pinks, acid limes and metallics. If you don’t want to commit to this look on a permanent basis opt for bright rugs and accessories rather than investing in wallpaper and fitted carpets. Use soft chenilles to warm up your interior and mix and match all your furniture pieces to suit your colour schemes.

For furniture, think about light wood finishes, as well as painted wood in white and light neutral colours. Shapes are simple, with relaxing squashy sofas and armchairs for lounging in. Patterns are classic, too, with plenty of stripes as well as plain shades; team different colours of blue with natural neutral tones. There are also plenty of natural textures, such as wicker, rattan and rope, as well as cotton, wool and felt. For accessories, choose hurricane lanterns, sailing boats and marine inspired motifs to give your scheme authentic seaside style.

Damien McEneaney weds Leona Wogan Leona Wogan, who works in Fuschia, Scotch Hall, originally from Navan met future husband Damian McEneaney, from Dublin when she was celebrating her 18th birthday in a Navan disco nearly a decade ago. Times have passed, little Luke has arrived and on their son’s first birthday, Damien finally decided to wed his missus! The pair got married in Kilmainhamwood Church before being utterly charmed by Ardee magician Rory O’Connor and dancing the night away to ‘Stop the Clock’ in Cabra Castle. Around 140 guests made it to the celebrations that saw Leona wearing a bespoke bridal gown by local designer Edel Tuite. Bridesmaids were Gwen, Helen, and Tracey Wogan and the bestmen were Darren and Eugene McEneaney and Jonathan Fitzpatrick. The couple enjoyed a romantic honeymoon in Bali. Photos by Keith Jack
Darren Caffrey weds Shauna Gough It was Christmas Eve 2008, the cosy fire lit in the background, and baby son Tadhg eagerly awaiting his first Christmas when Darren Caffrey decided to pop the question to his girlfriend of eight years, Shauna Gough from outside Slane. Having first met in a Navan disco all those years ago, the couple finally tied the knot in the Church of the Nativity, Rosnaree on October 15th, 2010. A reception was held afterwards in Johnstown House Hotel, Enfield where the couple and 200 guests were entertained by ‘Stop the Clock’. Shauna wore an ivory Mori Lee sweetheart neckline dress by McElhinney’s Bridal Shop, Athboy and was ably assisted by her bridesmaids, sisters Dearbhle and Ciara Gough, as well as Aideen McKeigue. Groomsmen were Darren’s brother Paul Caffrey, as well as Gary Woods and David Brady. Little Tadhg and Shauna’s brother, 12-year old Cillian were pageboys while nine-year old Sorcha Gough and one-year old Holly McKeigue were beautiful as flowergirls. For their honeymoon the couple spoiled themselves for a week in glitzy Dubai before returning home to build their own four walls! Photos by Suzanne Collins 26

What was your first bike and when did you start riding? When I was a teenager I used to sneak into my father’s garage once he left for work, take his bike, a Honda 50, and go for a ride. I’d have it back before he’d come back. What bike do you currently have and how long have you had it? I am currently riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and I have had this one for three years. I also have a Kawazaki Z1000, it’s a comfortable touring bike and me and my wife use this one to go over to the Isle of Man. We have been going over for the past 15 years and it has always been great. What protective gear do you wear? I wear the full gear – leathers and an Arai helmet. Do you follow motorcycle racing? Yes, I do. I am very much into motorcycle racing, not just watching it. I take part in races myself, riding a Suzuki SV650 in Mondello in Kildare. I can also be found up the North, or at the TT and Southern 100 Races on the Isle of Man. I also help out friends to organise races. It’s my favourite past-time. A few years later his other passion became apparent when he met Anne-Marie — and it wasn’t long before the pair moved to her home town of Drogheda where they took over Mi Casa. ‘Running your own business is very tough, especially in these uncertain times, but I am grateful that I am in a job that I love. Cooking has always been a passion for me and I believe fresh, local ingredients go a long way to making every dish a success,’ says Johnny. THE WORLD WINE TOUR From majestic crown to stiletto heel, Italy has a wonderful bounty of indigenous grape varieties, says Seamus Daly of Quintessential Wines Tuscany is one of the finest wine regions in Europe stretching between Firenze and Siena. It is also one of Italy’s top wine producing regions and is best known for: Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, and Carmignano.

On the leg of Italy, Abruzzo is behind the knee, a region of mountains sliding down to the sea. The two best known wines are Montepuliciano D’Abruzzo and Trebbiano D’Abruzzo. The whites are generally light, fresh and crisp while the reds are quite full bodied with low acidity and tannin. Camapnia is an area around the Bay of Naples where the volcanic soil around the town of Avellino produces very distinctive wines. Taurasai is a red wine made from the Aglianico grape which is a full bodied red with good ageing potential. Greco di Tufo, Falanghina and Fiano di Avellino are top quality whites named after the grape varieties from which they are made. Sicily has the largest area under vine in Italy. Production is concentrated on the western end of the island. There are a lot of very small landholdings and as a result a lot of co-ops which have flourished with EU aid. The principal grapes are Nero d’Avola and Inzolia. Call in and see us at 9 Dublin Rd, Drogheda and let us introduce you to some good value, interesting Italian wines, phone 041-9830960 or email sales@ quintessentialwines.ie.

Sangiovese is the most important grape and it produces a wine of medium deep colour with a warm herbal or nutty or savoury character which is repeated on a dry palate with a bitter finish. Other grapes include Caniolo and Malvasia Nero. The main white grape of Tuscany is Vernaccia especially those from the beautiful hilltop town of San Gimignano. The Puglia region lies at the heel of Italy. The climate is hot rather than warm and this influences the choice of grapes grown. The best known wine is Salice Salentino which is a deep red from Negroamaro. Other grapes include Primitivo and Uva di Troia.

Who do you most admire in business? Working mothers. It is a major challenge to work both inside and outside the home. It causes personal conflict and yet, I am surrounded by mothers who are back out working or starting their own businesses, despite the current economic climate. I think these working mums will play a strong role in getting us out of this recession.

The Best
of Everything
with Monasterboice interior designer Anne-Marie Hamill, who stars in RTE’s home improvement show, Roomers Best thing about working on Roomers: The craic with the other designers and the crew, especially when things didn’t go according to plan and the camera was still rolling! Best design tip: When you enter a room your eyes are automatically drawn to look at the opposite corner of the room. Try to put some sort of feature here as this will be the first impression of your room. Maybe try adding a fabric on a chair that will stand out, and create a focal point.
Best project I have worked on: I’ve had so many great projects that it’s hard to name just one! We’ve recently taken on a 14,000sq.ft family home in Castleblayney, I’m really excited about that! There’s even a swimming pool! Best interior designer I’ve worked with: My team are made up of Karen Mongan and Louise Cunningham, we each have our own design styles, but when we merge our ideas together the end results are amazing. Best trend: I love classical, timeless design and I always incorporate elements of feng shui. I’m also known as the ‘panelling queen’!

Best accessory/ materials I never tire using: Bling and more bling! I’m crazy about crystal chandeliers, large ornate mirrors, cushions and finishing touches like candles which create a lovely warm ambience.
look that never dates. Best excuse for hiring an interior designer: It makes the whole process stress free, it becomes a more enjoyable experience. Clients are assured they’re getting an individual look under the guidance of an expert. In my experience, clients are always delighted they made the decision to hire a designer when they see the finished result. Best TV moment: Beating the boys on Roomers! Best advice: Always think of longevity when it comes to design. We always create rooms that won’t date easily. I never allow myself to follow trends. Best drink: There’s nothing nicer than a big glass of red wine. Best meal: Sweet chilli prawns at The Valley Inn. I’ve had many a family outing here, we just keep going back. Best movie: The Pursuit of Happiness, starring Will Smith, it gives a great message never to give up hope, work hard and you will achieve your goals. Best read: I have no preferences really, but when I get the time I love to chill out with a good thriller.
