rogheda town is smiling again – and it’s fantastic to see it. The unveiling of the town’s new brand (see page 13) is just the beginning of the RTÉ Local Heroes regeneration process that has been ongoing for months now, and the man at the centre of the project is Senator Feargal Quinn who reveals why he is so passionate about getting Drogheda working again (see page 12). Black is the colour this month as stylist Caroline McElroy shows how to work the edgier side of fashion. While it’s never easy to spend big money on clothes, there are some things for which it makes sense to pay a little more! Check out the fab investment pieces by local designer Niamh Garry who takes on the high street’s impulse buys (see pages 14 & 15). Finally, for the ultimate in family fun over the festive season, we are giving two readers two family passes to 7Up Winter Wonderland. For your chance to win see page 33. Enjoy your read...

Shop
of the month The store: Nature’s Gate The proprietor: John Monaghan When did it all start? Nature’s Gate opened four months ago on Laurence Street, Drogheda. What was the reason behind the opening of the shop? To meet a growing demand for a wide selection of products that were previously unavailable in Drogheda. Brands such as Dr. Hauschka, Green People, New
Chapters and Pukka are just a few examples. The number of people who travelled to Dublin and other towns just to source their favourite products quite amazed us. Describe the products that you sell and what do you offer your customers? Many people get confused when it comes to choosing what’s best for their bodies and vitality and what remedy may be best suited to their individual needs. In this regard, we see ourselves as been educators and offering a service as well as simply being just a retailer. All of our products are of the highest standard, offering pure natural therapeutics in the most efficient bio-available forms possible. Due to the almost infinite number of products available, we are careful to stock only those that meet the
highest criteria and do exactly what they allege themselves to do. So you know you’re getting the very best that nature has to offer. How can Nature’s Gate keep its edge over other health stores? By keeping up-todate with developments in the scientific community. Products are being continually updated as science finds better ways of increasing the effectiveness of natural remedies. For example, many companies such as New Chapters, are now offering their vitamins and minerals in a food base rather than as standardized extracts. This simply means that more nutrients enter the cell so the body can utilise the product better.

Interview the grocery sector – is there anything you miss most about ‘the supermarket’? I just don’t have the time to miss the buzz of the shop floor but if I am near a Superquinn I always drop in. I am optimistic that the change of ownership to Musgraves will be beneficial as Musgraves is an Irish family business.

Launching the Local Heroes ‘Hub’ on West Street
How did the idea for Local Heroes come about? I have to give RTE full credit for this strategy. As part of their public service remit, they asked a number of production companies to come up with concepts that could help turn a community suffering the brunt of the economic downfall around. When Animo Productions won the tender, they asked me to front the programme. It is such an exciting project that I jumped at the opportunity to be involved! What makes you so passionate about this project? The project has the possibility to be a

HERO
As the leading mentor in RTE’s Local Heroes campaign which airs on November 9th, Feargal Quinn is as enthusiastic about Drogheda as the people living here. He talks to Carmel Riggs about his vision for the town and why Droghedeans need to believe in it huge success! Its aim of helping the people of Drogheda to lift the local economy and create jobs is worthy of as much support as possible. What is your vision for Drogheda? My vision for Drogheda is to have the whole town feel proud of their community and believe that it is in their own hands to achieve that goal. How have you motivated locals to share your vision? I learned many years ago that the best way to motivate people is to lead by example. I am fiercely enthusiastic about this project and I hope that that enthusiasm will permeate the people of Drogheda. What one thing will you take away from the whole Local Heroes experience? There is an old saying, ‘Whether you believe you can or whether you believe you can’t you are right!’ If the people of Drogheda believe in themselves then I think they will set an example for all communities in Ireland. As the founder of Superquinn you worked for more than 40 years in

If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently? Not wait until I was 23 years old to start! I am impressed at the talent and energy that young people have. What three pieces of advice would you give to college students who want to become entrepreneurs? Have confidence – you can do it! Give your customers such a good experience that they become your ambassador. Don’t have a fear of failure but don’t give your bank manager a bad surprise!
What are your hobbies? How do you unwind? Walking energetically around Howth Head and enjoying the wealth of surprises that nature gives us – birds, red squirrels, trees, flowers and views. I stopped my horse-riding a few years ago. However, I never fell off – I was always thrown! What book has inspired you the most? ‘The Making of the Celtic Tiger’ by Ray MacSharry and Padraic White. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever read about yourself? That I was a good university student when I actually had to struggle with every exam! Any annoying habits? I am perfect with no annoying habits! But I suggest you check with my wife of 49 years! What’s been your most embarrassing ever moment? It has to be dancing in Superquinn Ballinteer with an attractive (I thought!) Minnie Mouse with Superquinn colleagues and shoppers joining in. And then I discovered that Minnie Mouse was in fact the TV comedian Jeremy Beadle! What’s been your most indulgent/eccentric ever purchase? My most indulgent purchase was probably the bird feeder outside my office window. It feeds some birds but mainly the family of red squirrels that live nearby. Who would be at your dream dinner party and why? Padraig Pearse, Daniel O’Connell, Eamonn de Valera, Charles Stuart Parnell and Thomas Davis and the topic is ‘How are we doing?’ as I think it would be a riveting conversation.

rogheda will have a second river flowing through the town over the Halloween weekend! As part of the Boyneside Samhain – the first of the rebranded Drogheda on the Boyne’s festival events – locals are being asked to form a human river through the centre of the town. Rory Scott, Chair of the Tourism and Culture Committee, explained: ‘Sunday, October 30th will be a huge family day in Drogheda. Boyneside Samhain will be our Halloween Festival and events will start at 2.15pm in the Abbey Car Park. ‘We are celebrating by asking you and your family and friends to join us to form a human river flowing through the town. Along the way you will have your face painted, hear music and song from a host of talented local performers, see local dance troupes strut their stuff, enjoy a pumpkin parade, fun and games with Cadbury Spots v’s Stripes and be joined by a procession of boats sailing up the river. It’s going to be great!’ Everyone taking part in the human river is asked to dress in blue and/ or green and to bring a carved pumpkin for the procession. Also on the day the winner of the Local Heroes Photographic competition will be announced, and the Highlanes Gallery will be open displaying the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection. There will be an opportunity to meet some fabulous contemporary Irish artists and hear them talk about their craft and what inspires them. Admission is free and the gallery is open from 12noon-5pm. Once the kids have gone to bed there will be more fun for the grown-ups in the form of the Zombie Tour of Drogheda – you never know what will happen along the way! Mayor of Drogheda, Kevin Callan said: ‘Let’s enjoy a great weekend and show off what an amazing tourism destination Drogheda really is!’ For details of these events and all the other Local Heroes activities keep watching Facebook (search Drogheda Local Heroes), visit www.drogheda.ie or drop into The Hub (106 West Street).

his racy leather and lace combination embraces the edgier side of fashion. The style itself works brilliantly as a party look, or equally play it down for daytime. The easiest way to achieve this look is by wearing black trousers – specifically skinny or straight, in denim, leather look or liquid feel leggings – and the tighter the better! But if this thought leaves you screaming for the hills, opt for a skirt, pencil, leather and A-line work well with lace. Fur, cashmere and chunky knits soften the rock chic look and add a luxurious feel to it, and while dashes of colour can enhance the overall style it is still an easy excuse to wear black! Rock on!

My ex-girlfriend on three years, with whom I had a beautiful son who is now two years old, has recently learned that I am in a new relationship and has stopped letting me see my son, who I was seeing from 10am on Saturday to 6pm on Sunday every second weekend. I feel the reason she is stopping me seeing my son is because of my new relationship. Is there anything I can do? Paul
A
Dear Paul, You can make an application to the District Court who have the power to make an Order granting you access. It is important that parents of young children should realise that the District Court, when considering access, expects parents to put aside personal animosity and act in the best interests of the child. The court will not consider your right to see the child but the child’s right to have meaningful access to both parents. Access may start off at just a few hours on a Saturday but can be expanded to include overnight access, access every alternative Christmas, Easter, Halloween, birthdays and summer holidays. You may also need to consider making an application to be appointed guardian as you were not married at the time the child was born and this will give you a right to partake in the important decisions of your child’s life, for example, education, religion and general rearing. I would advise that you should be making appropriate maintenance payments to the mother of your child for your child’s benefit and you may find that the your ex-partner may make an application to the Court for maintenance payments when she receives your application for access and guardianship. Aside from the legal aspect here, I advise all parents who come to me to remember that someday their child will be an adult and, when they grow up, their child will either thank them for acting in their best interests or ask why they did not act in their best interests. I wish you the best of luck with your applications.

T’is the season to be looking beautiful but not without a little preparation! Emma Woods shares her top beauty secrets for a festive glow
I
t’s safe to say that Christmas is most likely in the forefront of all our minds these days. Kris Kindle, Christmas parties, decorations... the planning is endless. But in the middle of all this do you actually stop to give yourself a thought? In this I mean, are your feet ready for the Christmas party dance floor? Are your eyelashes the length of your Christmas wish list? And of course have you dropped enough hints for a little pre-Christmas gift? To make sure it’s all about you this Christmas follow my tips to get your body in partyready mode – t’is the season to be beautiful after all!
Beautiful, good looking nails are not just a fashion statement they’re essential to look and feel glamorous! And who wants to worry about chips or smudges over the party season, anyway? Have your hands and toes polished to perfection with Boston Beauty’s Gel Nail manicure, and you get a free spray tan too. Fabulous! Gel Nails manicure €50, pedicure €25, Boston Beauty Bar, Scotch Hall, Drogheda, 041-9809274.
Eyelashes
Of all of the make-up brands that I hear talked about lately, I think Ardell eyelashes has to be one of the ones I’ve heard recommended most often. Most people who try this brand seem to rave about them, make-up artists in particular. And why not? They’re easy-to-apply, have a fabulous finish and a huge variety of styles to suit whatever the occasion might be. Both Strip & Individual Lashes €4.95, Mahers Chemist, West St, Drogheda, 041-9836128.
Make-up
Prepping your make-up bag for the party season is a must! I love this year’s hottest new trend – deep crimson red lips – but I’m sure it’s not to everybody’s taste! Slightly vampish but incredibly sexy and when applied to the lips with subtle eye make-up, this look is simply stunning. I promise it will immediately make every party dress look sophisticated. Charles Troccon weds Karen Starrs
It was a reggae night in Dublin that brought Karen and Charles together back in 2005. The couple who tied the knot in The Holy Family Church on August 6th 2011, had luck on their side as the skies cleared just as the ceremony was ending! Bridesmaids included Emma Hughes, a childhood friend of the bride and Shauna Starrs, Karen’s sister. Chief bridesmaid was Meaghan Hathhorn who flew in from London. Charles’ bestman was Mathieu Vogien, a cousin from Avignon. The groomsmen were Henri Troccon, Charles’ brother who flew in from Brazil, and Quentin Attyasse, Charles’ godson, who was late as he got lost on the drive from Dublin, leaving the bride to drive around the block for 20 minutes! The reception was held in the Westcourt Hotel with music by a trad band who took to the stage complete with ‘bodhrans, uileann pipes, the works and a ceili was organised along with some traditional dancers’. For their honeymoon, the couple spent time at Cabra Castle before travelling around Ireland. Photos by Eoghan O’Sullivan & Jolene Matthews

David Lynch weds Leonie Gregory

Property THE HOME Surrounded by its 1.5 acre plot, ‘The Willows’ is an outstanding 3,800 sq.ft, five-bedroom detached dormer home located on the Oriel Road, Collon. For sale through Shane Black Property Agents, it is situated approximately 15 minutes drive from Drogheda town and c.10 minutes drive from the M1 motorway. This is a house designed for large family gatherings! WHO’D LIVE HERE? Spacious and elegant in a non-showy kind of way this is a wonderful family house that matches the landscape that surrounds it. It’s the perfect home for young families looking to enjoy the benefits of living in a village while not being too far away from the action. The landscaped gardens are pretty impressive too and for children who like adventure, they’re paradise! FIRST IMPRESSIONS ‘The Willows’ is very well laid out and has an abundance of natural light flowing through the home mainly due to its southerly facing aspect to the rear. It has been finished to an exquisite standard throughout and the accommodation comprises of entrance hall, dining room, large living room, kitchen and breakfast room with island and granite worktops, French doors leading to garden, five double bedrooms (two en-suite), guest bathroom and main bathroom. OTHER INTERESTING FACTS The double garage boasts an attic conversion which could be transformed into a children’s den or office space.
THE DINING ROOM A crystal chandelier and recess lighting add sparkle and a touch of glamour to the dining room, while the three windows allow pools of soft light to reflect off the deeply-coloured hardwood floor. Green walls give the room a fresh, outdoorsy feel and picks up the floral pattern of the curtains. The marble fireplace, gold-effect mirror and paintings contribute to this room’s unique style, which blends the old with the new.

Rural
Retreat Stunning Collon home was designed with family gatherings in mind!
THE LIVING ROOM With large windows overlooking the landscaped gardens, this room is drenched in light. The design of the living room is simple and streamlined, yet there’s a nod to cosiness. Touches of texture, like the rug, leather chairs and coffee table, prevent the space from seeming austere. The small coffee table and floral foot stool are easy to move aside, freeing up space for kids to play.
THE KITCHEN Indulge your inner chef in this modern kitchen! To create this look, think marble, stainless steel appliances, butcher block surfaces. The hefty kitchen island provides extra workspace but is also the perfect gathering space for guests who like to watch the chef in action!
THE HALLWAY The period table, hardwood steps leading to the front entrance and the balcony looking down from the first floor all create a stunning visual interest. With porcelain floor tiles and solid oak doors and skirtings the hall feels fresh, calm and most of all inviting. The artwork displays add to the homely feel.

ikon have always occupied a place at the top table of camera manufacturers – and deservingly so. Between themselves and Canon they own the lion’s share of the professional camera market and this doesn’t appear to be going to change in the foreseeable future. What has changed in recent years is both Canon’s and Nikon’s determination to maintain their dominant position in the ever increasing consumer market. Evidence of this is the much anticipated launch of the Nikon 1 which, although aimed at the consumer market, they claim will change the digital camera market forever. Two versions of the Nikon 1 – V1 and J1 – were unveiled in London recently with the technology media giving it the thumbs up in respect of its pioneering image technology. Nikon claims that this camera in Still Image Mode will return full-resolution shots of the action at up to 60 frames per second. This is an amazing claim which I hope to put to the test over the coming weeks. By far the most impressive part of this camera is its Smart Photo Selector (SPS) technology which Nikon say will

WHITE COLLAR BOXING – FIGHT NIGHT 2011 14th October 2011, Westcourt Hotel, Drogheda
On Friday, October 14th Drogheda & District Chamber hosted one of the most anticipated events of the year, WCB Fight Night 2011, in the Westcourt Hotel, Drogheda. To a sold out venue of 500, 24 local men and women took to the ring to fight it out after six weeks of intense training with the Holy Family Boxing Club. Each of the 12 matches were superb with plenty of action, tension and dramatics. The Chamber would like to thank and acknowledge all the hard work put in by the boxers and all the fantastic support and contributions from the sponsors on the night. Chamber president Padraic Kierans commented that this event was not only to highlight the work of the Chamber but to get local business men and women working together to put on a great night’s entertainment for the local community and to raise some much needed funds for Drogheda Youth Development who are striving to open Drogheda Youth Café in 2012. DYD are faced with the challenge of raising €300,000 between now and May in order to make the Café a reality.

Drive What was your first bike and what age were you? It was a Honda 50 and I was about 14 (but I had better say 16!) The parents weren’t impressed but it was too late by that stage. I got it for near nothing, it was reliable and got me from A to B for a start. What do you ride now? About five years ago I bought a Suzuki 600 GSF in Kennedy’s Motorcycles on Dyer Street. I got a good deal, and it was a case of it being the right bike at the right time. At the time I had only got back into motor biking after a long absence. Why the turnaround? While at the Motorbike Show in the RDS I won a competition for €1,000 worth of biker gear. I thought that this was like an omen and it got me back into bikes.
The Guzzi would take you all over Europe or even Route 66 in America. In terms of protective gear what’s the one thing you wouldn’t be without? I would wear full protective gear – even on the shortest trip. As an instructor once told me, ‘Even though it can feel uncomfortable in warm weather, a shower is a lot cheaper than a skin graft’.
Bike
When did you pass your test? Five years ago – got it first time round! I got riding lessons; it wasn’t compulsory then but I was thankful that I did it because it’s amazing what you can learn.
Pat McCormac of McCormac’s at Greene’s has been riding bikes since he was a teenager. These days he takes to the road on his Suzuki600 GSF

The your business to get lessons – don’t presume you because it’s local. Ducati is about as sporty as you can get, it’s not know it all. Also, as you’re only on two wheels you made for long spins but made for bursts of energy! The greatest racer ever? Joey Dunlop is the greatest have to be able to stop as well as accelerate.
