that time of year again! Christmas along with its trappings are just around the corner (12 weeks to be exact) and if we’re not already planning what gifts to buy we are thinking about shedding some pounds in time for the festivities. On page 11, System 10 weight loss consultant Caroline Conroy begins the first in a three-part series, advising how to lose two stone in 12 weeks. Intrigued yet? For over 45 years he had packed in the crowds across Ireland. And now four years after his death, Joe Dolan is still packing them in. On page 10, E talks to the Westmeath Bachelor’s friend, RTE Radio 1 presenter Ronan Collins who begins a nationwide tour this month with Ronan Collins Sings Joe Dolan. Also don’t miss E’s interviews with local singer/songwriter SJ McArdle (page 30), Scotch Hall’s new personal shopper (page 13) and Barry Murtagh of Murtagh’s of Drogheda home decor store shares his story (page 23). Interview

Joe’s show

When did you first start singing? It was in the early Seventies when I was drummer/singer in a band. However it’s only in recent years (with Reeling in the Showband Years tour) that I’ve come out in front and left the drums.

Where you always a fan of Joe Dolan and what does this tour mean to you? I’ve always liked Joe and we were always very friendly. His shows were amazing; they were around two hours long and he had such a connection with the audience. RTE Radio 1 presenter Ronan Collins is back in the TLT this month with a Joe Dolan tribute show. He talks to Carmel Riggs about his friendship with the singer, his showbiz life and why honesty is the best policy

How has showbusiness changed since you got into the biz? Beauty Frizzy and damaged hair The secret is good maintenance just as you would do if you had damaged skin. A good quality shampoo and conditioner, such as REVLON’s ‘Orofluido’ formula, is a must. I can guarantee that with this product, hair will be restored with a luminous shine and lustre. A great tip is to firstly shampoo and condition the hair as normal, slightly towel dry the hair and apply Orofluido’s Mask for 3-5 minutes all over every strand of hair. If the hair is really badly damaged pop a few drops of Orofluido’s Elixir into the mask before applying. Orofluido’s Elixir features argan, cyperus and linseed oil, which leaves the hair beautifully light and incredibly silky. This oil seals and smoothes the hair cuticle, providing uniformity and control and will also provide softness and volume, leaving hair manageable, smooth and flexible. Once the mask is all over your hair, soak a towel in hot water and wrap your hair up for 3-5 minutes; the heat will allow the mask to penetrate through the hair faster, leaving amazing results. For the complete range, Orofluido is stocked in Moda Vida, Stockwell St, Drogheda. Prices start at e10 for a bottle of the conditioner and shine spray.

Winter

Hair extensions For healthy looking extensions try spraying REVLON’s Equave 2 Phase leave-in conditioner (e14.50, Sapphire Hair Salon, Laurence St, Drogheda) all over your natural hair and extensions. This will nourish, moisturise and reinforce the structures of the hair fibre. Next apply Orofluido Elixir to the ends of the extensions and leave in whilst blow-drying (if left to dry naturally it is likely frizzing will occur). Brush the hair with a ‘Tangle Tease’, €14.99 from Boots, Laurence Town Centre, Drogheda. This hand held brush combs over the beads and bonds without vigorously pulling at the hair. Lastly, although this sounds like common sense, washing your hair upside down is a big NO NO with extensions, it will just pull too hard on the bond or the bead of the extension and the hair will unsurprisingly separate from the natural hair.

hair care From static electricity to dry frizz, It’s time to weather-proof your locks. By Emma Woods

T

he harsh cold days of winter are just around the corner and with it we will see the dry and cold winds taking a toll on our body. Apart from skin, our tresses are the most badly affected part of the body during the winter months which is why we need to give our hair some extra TLC during this time. This month I talk to Joyce Clarke, a Certified Vidal Sassoon creative cutting specialist who shares her top hair care tips for shiny and bouncy hair during the chilly season!

Help! I’ve got the flyaway look Keeping

hair well conditioned will help to prevent static electricity. For fine hair apply a leave-in conditioner/ spray such REVLON’s Equave 2 Phase before blow-drying. If you find your hair is flyaway in winter despite conditioning, talk to your hair stylist about anti-static products. I particularly like Alterego Hair Putty, a finishing product suitable for all hair types, available from Deegan’s Hair & Beauty Supplies, Bolton St, Drogheda. Another tip to combat static is to spray a small amount of hair spray on your hairbrush when you are done styling and brush it through from top to bottom. Using fabric softener on your clothes, especially garments you put on over your head, will also help to reduce static electricity in your hair. If static continues to be a problem look into changing shampoos.

Dull & lifeless hair Eat a healthy and nutritious diet to supply your skin and hair extra nutrition during the cold winter months. Increase your intake of green leafy vegetables, fruits and protein sources like pulses, fish, meat, etc. Protein and folic acid are especially required to keep your hair strong and healthy and avoid brittleness and dryness of hair. You can also start taking a vitamin supplement such as Hair, Skin & Nails available from Boots, Laurence Town Centre to provide extra strength and lusture to your hair. Try using a volumising shampoo from the Joico range and apply the Joico Body Luxe Volumizing Foam before blow-drying to give it a nice lift. The Joico range is available from Renaissance, Southgate Shopping Centre. 14

Alan Foley weds Aisling Murphy

June 17th was a day to remember for Essential graphic designer Aisling Murphy and Duleek butcher Alan Foley, as they were joined by 80 close friends and family for their wedding in sunny Spain. Celebrations lasted a whole week as the couple was greeted by new faces every day in the run up to the wedding. Aisling was every part the senorita in her Spanish style San Patrick gown from Protocol, Drogheda. Local make-up artist Karen Kierans and hairdresser Linda Newman of Fabulous Salon jetted out to beautify the bridal party for the big day. Aisling’s only sister, Shiofra Bannon was her bridesmaid, along with best friend Susan McDonagh. The bestmen were Ronan Brodigan and Mark Mullen. The loved-up couple’s marriage ceremony took place in the beautifully ornate Iglesia de l’Encarnacion, just off Marbella’s famous Orange Square. A cocktail reception followed in the chilled out Vincci Hotel, where they entertained guests as the sun went down and danced until the sun came up! The couple honeymooned in Miami followed by a Caribbean Cruise. Photos by Dawn Lashley, Unity Photography

Francis Pierotti weds Laura Kelly Laura Kelly, originally from Hand St and daughter of Jim Kelly, married Francis Pierotti on April 2nd, 2011. The ceremony took place in St Mirin’s Cathedral in Paisley, Scotland with a reception afterwards in the Lodge on Loch Lomond hotel. Best man was the groom’s brother Michael Pierotti, while the bridesmaids included Nicola Houghton, Karen Meegan and Aoife Galavan. Dressed in cream like the bride, the flower girls Erin Browne and Hollie Bourke enjoyed their roles as did the pageboys Fergus Browne, Ryan Kelly, Daniel Flynn and Shane Kelly. Kenneth Browne weds Lynn Keeley There wasn’t just love in the air when Lynn Keeley and Kenneth Browne tied the knot at Clogherhead Church on December 27th, 2010. There was snow too – and plenty of it! The reception was held at the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim and on arrival everyone was met by a children’s school choir who sang Christmas songs while guests sipped on mulled wine and champagne. The bridal party consisted of chief bridesmaid Carol O’Brien, bridesmaids Maura Collins and Maire Devine, bestman Gareth Murphy, as well as groomsmen Ged O’Brien and Jay Browne. A nice touch on the day was a candy table, aptly christened ‘Browne Candy’, in the centre of the reception room which featured all ranges of sweets and chocolates for wedding guests. The newlyweds celebrated a mini-honeymoon in London a few days later which was a gift from Lynn’s sister Sarah-Jane and brotherin-law Alan Kelly. They finally headed off on their ‘proper’ honeymoon in July with a trip to Vegas, Orlando and a Caribbean Cruise. Photos by Ruth Foran Sauvage & Martin Sauvage, Enfield, Co. Meath

Size it up Always carry with you a list of room measurements, window sizes and maximum furniture sizes so that if you see something you like, you will know whether or not it will fit into your room.

The Living Area A stunning mix of natural colours and chic furniture create a relaxing family room. The cream and black marble fireplace creates a wonderful focal point, and the walls are painted cream as colours with too much intensity would only steal the show. The round mirror is a gorgeous stylish addition.

Space solution Shop around for furniture that is multi-purpose. For example, dining chairs can double up as extra seating in the living room when you’re not entertaining.

Open-plan living Use similar or the same wall colours and neutral flooring for neighbouring rooms – this immediately makes a home feel more spacious. Keeping your internal doors open also works and encourages an open-plan feel.

Zoom to improve For super sharp images look through Canon’s new fisheye zoom lens. By Terry Collins

I

was delighted recently to see Canon’s highly acclaimed 8-15mm which is their first fisheye zoom lens. This is a high quality lens aimed at only the most serious photographic enthusiasts who have a passion for architectural, landscape or nature. The images from this lens are super sharp and I’ve no doubt that you could have great fun with it; however the hefty price tag limits the appeal somewhat. At 8mm zoom, you get a truly

fisheye effect that produces a circular image with a trademark vignette, leaving the image cut off by a black circle. You could use this lens at the maximum zoom of 15mm which would give you a truly super wide angle lens and excellent results even in the tightest of situations without any vignette. A great example of the power of this lens is this handheld image by Seamus Counihan taken in St Peter’s Church, Drogheda (pictured above) The lens was used with a Canon EOS 5D and for those of you interested in

the technical specification, they are 1600 iso, 1/50 sec at F4. ISO:1600, Shutterspeed 1/50,aperture of F4. EF 8-15mm F4L Fisheye USM lens is €1,649, available at Maher’s, West St.

The ‘My Drogheda On the Boyne’ Photo Competition has just been launched by RTE Local Heroes. The concept is simple: share, through a photograph, your vision of Drogheda on the Boyne. The entrants will be judged in three categories - U12, 12-18 years old and 18+ to be included in a public exhibition over the October Bank Holiday weekend. Email your entries to mydroghedaontheboyne@ gmail.com before October 14th. Good luck!

Photo of the Month David Flanagan of Belfry Lawns, Drogheda didn’t have to go too far to capture this wonderful image with his Nikon Coolpix s4000. He was in the garden (approaching midday) when the sun suddenly burst through a gap in the clouds, causing the flower heads to open in spectacular fashion. Retrieving his camera from the house he fired off a couple of frames before the sun disappeared behind the clouds and the flower heads retracted and resumed their summer of 2011 position. When I first received this image by email I was certain that the imaged had been ‘Photoshoped’ or modified in some way... but on closer inspection, of the image file, it’s clear that this was not the case. According to David the flower is a ‘Mesembryanthemum mixed’ which is a large daisy-like flower whose glistening petals open in bright sunshine. Although planning is often the key to great photographs, it can also just be a case of being in the right place at the right time. So, for all you budding photographers keep your camera nearby and send your images of people, pets and places to me at learndp@gmail.com. Please include your camera make and model and a phone number. Roll out the pastry and use to line a 28cm/11ins loose-bottomed flan tin, trim, prick the base with a fork and bake blind for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Check halfway through the cooking to make sure the pastry isn’t rising up in the centre. If it is, prick it a couple of times and press back down with your hands. 3. Heat the olive oil in a large, non-stick frying pan. Add the bacon, red pepper, onion and garlic and sauté for 3-4 minutes. 4. Stir in the spinach and then remove from the heat. 5. Whisk the eggs and cream. Add salt, pepper and chopped basil. 5. Crumble the goats’ cheese with your hands, then gently combine it with the bacon and vegetables and place it over the pastry case. Then, pour the egg mixture over them. 7. Bake in a pre-heated oven for 40 minutes or until set and lightly coloured.

Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 3, 325°F (170°C) Grated zest 1 lemon 2. thickened – about 20 minutes. 5. When the cakes are cooked, remove them from the oven and after about 30 seconds turn them out on to a wire rack. When they are cold, cut each one horizontally into two using a sharp serrated knife. Spread the curd thickly to sandwich the sponges together. 6. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl and gradually stir in the lemon juice until you have a soft, runny consistency. Allow the icing to stand for 5 minutes before spreading it on top of the cake, almost to the edges Then scatter the lemon zest (it’s best to use a zester to get long, curly strips) over the top and leave it for half an hour for the icing to firm up before serving.

Q

I went into my local supermarket last weekend and I fell over a box that was left on the floor. I fractured my wrist and cut my hand off one of the shelves when I fell. I’m unable to work since because my job is all physical work – I’m a bricklayer. Would I be entitled to compensation? I’ve never claimed before. Regards, Phil Dear Phil, I am glad that you have sought advice at an early stage as any claim for a personal injury must be made within two years from the date of the injury occurring. If you do not bring your claim within this period, you are statute barred from ever bringing the claim (this means that you will never be able to bring a claim for compensation for your injury). In order to make a claim for personal injury, you must first make an application through the Personal Injuries Assessment Board Dermot Monahan of (‘PIAB’). This can be a complicated process which your solicitor can assist you with. On average, Monahan & Co Solicitors, PIAB can take nine months in which to make an assessment but, on occasions, can take longer. If the matter does not finalise at the PIAB stage, PIAB will issue an authorisation which will allow you to proceed to court. If your matter does go to court, this part of the process can take between one-two years. It is important to remember that there is no shame in bringing a personal injury action – if Need legal advice? you have genuinely suffered injury which is as a result of the fault of another, you are entitled to seek Email your query to info@ Monahan & Co compensation. For more information on the PIAB process you can go to www.injuriesboard.ie or make solicitors essentialdrogheda.com an appointment to call in and speak to me in confidence about your matter.*

Seeing and hearing Best riffs of all time: REM riffs are what made me those parts being recorded in a really cool little studio in want to get better as a guitarist. Peter Buck is an amazing guitarist, melodic and simple and utterly Nashville is a memory that stays with me. Also, opening shows no BS about him. The solo in ‘The Flowers Of Guatemala’ is one of my favourite guitar parts ever. on Reamonn’s European tour was an eye-opener. Huge venues. The first couple of shows were a bit Best musician I have worked with: I’ve worked hairy, but when we got to Berlin everything fell into with amazing musicians, and still do on a regular place. Thousands of people singing along. I looked basis, I’m happy to say. Tim Lauer, who produced around at my drummer, James, and thought, ‘This is all right’.

Best source of inspiration: Poetry, history, the sea. Films sometimes. Books often. And my own life, of course. Other people’s music, if I’m honest, is a huge driving force. Best time of day for writing new material: Any time I get a chance at the moment. We have an eight-month-old daughter now, so I write very, very quietly.

Getting married and having a baby has made me very aware of that. I’m way more ambitious now than ever before. Best thing about self-releasing your album: Having other people investing in your music is a great blessing, as it enables you to do a lot more than you could on your own. When you self-release, though, you can build up a great head of steam and work as hard as you want to make stuff happen. Best message you can get across using your music as a medium: That sooner or later we all go through a lot of the same stuff to a greater or lesser extent. We have a lot more in common than we do dividing us. Best childhood memory: Family stuff. My mum and I were very close and chatted a lot. And it was an amazing thing to realise that a love of music was something that my dad and I had in common. I’ve probably shared more with him musically than with anyone else. Best drink: Wine I love, although always as part of a meal. A wellmatched wine is a great thing. And it’s awfully hard to beat a cup of tea. Best snack: I try not to snack, or to snack on something healthy, like fruit, but of course that rarely happens…

Best thing on my iPOD: I’m all about The Decemberists at the moment. They’re my new Best advice I ever received: favourite band. But the best Irish album of the last while is Bill Coleman’s ‘You Can’t Buy Back Your I like the old Project Life’. I listen to that a lot. Triangle: ‘Fast-CheapGood’. You can pick any Best hideaway: East Galway – my wife has family two: if it’s fast and cheap it over there who I adore. The West in general is very won’t be good. If it’s cheap important to us. Best and good then it won’t be musical hideaway has fast. And if it’s fast and to be Carberry’s Pub, good then it certainly ain’t where I can play what gonna be cheap. I like among great friends and recharge Best motivation: Being aware that you’ve only got the creative batteries. one shot at this.
