Stylish Caroline Webb from Ratoath, Co. Meath is ready to embark on a €2,000 shopping spree after winning the Littlewoods Ireland Best Dressed Lady at Bellewstown on Thursday, August 18th. Popular TV3 presenter Sinead Desmond had to choose the most stylish ladies on the day – and she wasn’t left wanting! ‘I had a great day,’ said Sinead, whose head piece was designed by Drogheda firm C’est Parfait. ‘Everyone made such an effort with their style and it was tough to pick a winner. Well done to Caroline on her gorgeous outfit.’ Caroline’s winning outfit included a lime green hat from Jackie’s in Drogheda and a Bird of Paradise coat that she got at a clothes swap evening. Speaking after her win, the riding instructor said: ‘I can’t believe I won as this is my first time getting dressed up and attending the races!’ Each of the nine finalists received a €100 shopping voucher for the online department store.

Real Life

‘I love watching Geordie Shore and Jersey Shore – they’re both so outrageous and just fun to watch. The people in these shows are more honest and normal unlike those in The Hills. I won’t be tuning into the new Big Brother as I think they should have just let it run its course. I like Brian Dowling, BB’s new presenter, but the show itself is so 2001!’

Karen Grogan, Bredin Street. ‘Oh yeah I love reality TV – especially Eastenders! Seriously though, I like watching Operation Transformation on RTE. It’s great to see people achieve their goals and I like the fact that they’re so open and honest and really brave to go on it in the first place. I also like I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! but hate looking at all the spiders and rats, or anything that moves in fact. Those people would do or eat anything for money!’

Reality TV bites

Anna Dunne,

Clogherhead. ‘I love all of the reality shows. I’ve watched every Big Brother episode and all of X Factor – I’d say I‘ve seen practically every show going! I never get tired watching reality shows because you can’t read in the papers what’s going to happen; they’re so unpredictable.’

From the ridiculous to the mundane, the world of reality TV continues apace. The X Factor, Celebrity Big Brother, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Come Dine With Me, the list goes on and on... Carmel Riggs finds out what shows are the most popular Denise waters, Ashfield. ‘I’ve started watching Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 5 – it’s my first time ever really watching BB! I don’t really sit much to watch TV to be honest. I like the X Factor and am delighted it’s back – Gary is much better on the eyes than Simon Cowell!’

Q A

Brenda Cambpell,

Drogheda ‘I wouldn’t watch every reality show but I do like I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! I really like Ant and Dec, I think they’re very funny. There are quite a lot of reality TV shows these days so I guess it is a bit overkill but you just get sucked in once you start watching them!’

Adele Woods, Ardee. ‘Reality TV is a bit of craic! The storylines in soaps like Coronation Street are getting ridiculous and is favoured by the older generation. Reality shows are our “soaps”! I like The X Factor, The City and The Hills – and I was gutted when they stopped making The City. I love having a sneak peek into other people’s lives – it shows that everyone’s life is not perfect.’

My partner and I are gay and we have been in a same sex relationship for the past six years and were considering making it ‘official’. Does civil registration of a partnership give me the same rights as a marriage and is there any criteria to be fulfilled in order to qualify for a civil partnership? Derek

Dear Derek, The law changed in Ireland at the beginning of this year with the introduction of the Civil Registration and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010. This Act introduced a new legal relationship for same sex couples – civil partnership. Registering for civil partnership status will basically give you and your partner the same rights, entitlements and obligations as if you were married. Civil partnerships can be terminated by death of a partner, nullity or a decree of dissolution. There are extensive reliefs orders available on the dissolution of a civil partnership, in the same way as if you were married (ie., maintenance orders, property adjustment orders, financial compensation orders, orders for the sale of property, etc) and the requirements for obtaining a dissolution of a civil partnership are very similar to that of a divorce, with one or two minor differences. It is also worth noting that children of a Civil Partnership are not provided for, or even mentioned, in the new Act and this is one of the big differences between a Civil Partnership and a marriage. In order to register for civil partnership, you must be over the age of 18, you must give three months notice to the Registrar of the General Register Office and must submit all the relevant forms and documentation. You should note that you can not register a civil partnership if you are still married to another – you will first need to obtain a divorce. More information on the procedural requirements for registering a civil partnership can be found www.groireland.ie.

Interview

The world

according to…

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before? Heartfelt, melodic, theatrical, piano driven, folk-pop. What artists are you influenced by? Today I tend to like songs rather than specific artists, but early influences would have been Peter Gabriel, Springsteen, Crowded House and the Hothouse Flowers.

Drogheda singer/songwriter

should be music and drama teachers in primary schools. I feel every child should have the opportunity to learn an instrument.

Niall Boyle

Who’s your favourite Irish act at the moment? There are so many great Irish acts out there. When I talk to people from other countries they always say how lucky Ireland is to have such great musical talent. The talent in Drogheda alone is amazing with some of the best musicians you will find such as David Leddy, Baz Leahy, Darren Rooney and Niall Gregory to name a few. S.J. McArdle is a local singer songwriter who released his new album recently and it’s fantastic! Do you think Irish acts get enough exposure/air play? Definitely not! Of course the stations play the required amount but it’s made up mainly of the same established acts over and over again. Like please! There’s more to Irish music than U2, Westlife and Boyzone. However, it has improved in recent weeks with acts like Ryan Sheridan and Royseven rightly getting good exposure. Your album ‘Generation Game’ reached No.25 in the Irish charts in 2009 – have you plans to release a third album any time soon? Yes I’m currently recording my third album. This is my first release for ‘Crashed Records’, a record company owned by former IMRO boss, Shay Hennessy. Recording finished but a release date has yet to be finalised. Are there any artists you’d like to collaborate with? Yes, quite a few. I’d love to work with Lisa Hannigan, Mike Scott or Carlos Santana. I used to play keyboard for a Santana tribute band called ‘Soultana’ and fell in love with his music. Good times! My new album features a duet with my sister, Carmel. She has a fantastic voice and has released many albums of spiritual music. Although we’ve both been in music for a long time this will be our first time singing together.

Do you think music as a subject should be made compulsory in the school curriculum? Music and drama is currently part of the primary curriculum. When students go to secondary school I guess it’s up to them to decide if they want to continue with it. However, not all secondary schools have music as an option and I think this is wrong.

He was just 10 years old when he wrote his first song so it was inevitable that the young Niall Boyle would go on to pursue his musical talent in later life. Now a school teacher in Drogheda and with a music degree and two hit albums – Stop,Look,Listen and Generation Game – under his belt, song writing and singing remains Niall’s greatest love. Claudia Werner catches up with the musician to find out about his plans for a third album...

What do your students and fellow teachers make of your music career? I have a special post to promote music in my school so music is a huge part of my teaching life. My fellow teachers are What’s the best gig you’ve ever played? very supportive of music both within school and During the release of my first album I did of my own music career; they come along to any a headline gig in Temple Bar Music Centre local gigs that I have. And what about the worst gig? There was one gig when my voice totally went, I couldn’t sing a Have you ever thought about leaving teaching note. It was very embarrassing. I just wanted the behind to take up music full time? Yes, quite a few times but my head ruled my heart. Besides, ground to open up and swallow me. The voice I’m a bit of a home bird and wouldn’t be too fond was gone for a number of months and that was of the travelling that would be involved. I also really scary as I was afraid it would never come really enjoy my teaching job. I like things just the back. Thank God all it needed was a long rest. way they are at the moment. Katie Everitt of La Spa Therapie Got a beauty dilemma? answers your questions What are the benefits of hydrotherapy baths? Mary, Dublin Rd, Drogheda Water has long been recognised as possessing therapeutic, even miraculous, properties. Both stimulating and relaxing, hydrotherapy treatments can relieve stress, stimulate sluggish circulation and improve body metabolism. The hyrdrotherapy bath will leave you feeling relaxed and uplifted and I recommend that you follow this treatment with a massage as the muscles are relaxed and it is more beneficial to be massaged like this.

What are the benefits of acupuncture? Denise, Co. Meath Acupuncture works directly with the body’s energy or qi, as acupuncture practitioners believe that all illnesses are a result of the natural flow of energy through the body becoming stuck, depleted or weakened and thus making the individual susceptible to illness. Acupuncture benefits the rebalance of qi through treatment of specific acupoints related to symptoms or illness present. Treatment is effective in removing these energy obstructions. Acupuncture has been effectively used for the treatment of back pain, headache, migraine, and sports injuries. However, acupuncture provides more than pain relief. It is helpful in treating anxiety, insomnia, digestive problems, abdominal, menstrual cramps, weight control, infertility and much, much more.

Acne prone skin?

Beauty

Breakouts can occur on men’s backs for many reasons. It may be caused by perspiration or during puberty where there is an overproduction of sebum (the oily substance that lubricates skin). In this case, typical soaps can dry out your skin, which leads to oily skin, clogged pores and acne breakouts. Wash irritated skin with a cleanser that combines soothing ingredients like Urea, Allantoin, Vitamin E and Aloe Vera. Silcocks Base (€3.99, Superpharm, Narrow West St) is a thick, white cream that ticks all the boxes and comes in a big white plastic tub. It’s possibly the least glamorous product I’ve ever seen but aesthetics aside, when warmed between the palms of your hands and paired with a warm, damp facecloth, it is very effective at soothing irritated skin.

Cleanse

Use a mild soap or facial scrub that ‘deep cleans’ pores and exfoliates dead skin cells. Just apply a small amount of exfoliating scrub (about a pea size) and rub all over the face in a circular motion, particularly around the beard area. Then wash off with cold water. (Try Clarins Men Exfoliant Visage Active Face Scrub €25.50, Hickey’s Pharmacy, West St).

ince having started writing this column over a year ago I have received a significant amount of feedback from Essential readers. There’s one topic I have been threatening to write about for some time and which should appeal to many of our local men – the subject of men’s skin and hair care regimen! The notion of a man cleansing is not shocking any more, it’s simply good hygiene – and believe me, us women secretly love a man who looks after himself! If it’s a case that you’re still following grooming tips from your school days, then sit up and take heed! First impressions are important as people make their initial assumptions about what kind of a person you are in a matter of seconds...

Razor sharp

Even if you have been razor shaving for 10 or 20 years you may need to sharpen up on the latest shaving advice. First open your pores with warm water (not hot!). Wash your face with an exfoliating scrub or facial cleanser to get a closer shave. Apply some shaving cream or gel evenly to your face and rub upwards on your face. (Try Clarins Men Smooth Shave Gel €19.50, Hickeys Pharmacy, West St). If you use a shaving brush, apply the cream or gel in a circular motion. Allow it to sit on your face for a couple of minutes as wet hair is 70% easier to cut than dry hair. Always shave with your razor in the same direction that your hair grows and pull your skin taut to avoid nicks. Keep washing your shaving razor throughout to cleanse the hair and remove gel so you will continue to get the closest razor shave possible. When you are finished, rinse your face with cold water. Dry and apply aftershave or toner and moisturizer, preferably one with a sunscreen. Never use products with alcohol, as they will dry out your skin. (Try Clarins Unfortunately, Men Super Moisture Balm €36, Hickeys Pharmacy, West St). there’s no invisible Now I’m not a pro in facial shaving but I have trained in hot towel protective layer around shaves, which I would thoroughly recommend! O

ver the past 12 years I have been lucky enough to have designed gardens of all shapes and sizes, from tiny balconies in Dublin’s city centre to 10 acre gardens hidden away in the country. Each garden presents its own challenges. However, it is a common misconception that you need endless space to have a really great garden. Personally, I love working in smaller gardens because your budget goes a lot further and any money you do spend in the space is immediately visible. Unlike larger gardens that can swallow up thousands of euro before you see any of the finished results. It has often been said to me, ‘nothing can be done with my garden, it is way too small’. But this simply couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, they create some challenging

You need to consider everything from furniture, planting, washing lines, bins to storage facilities. It is important to truly plan out every single square foot of the space to maximise its potential. Firstly, consider the floor space of the area. Be wary of making the garden look even smaller by trying to cram too many features into the one space. If there is only space for a tiny lawn then maybe you would be better off having no lawn and

Weddings

David Brodigan weds Deborah Farrell Deborah Farrell from Rosevale first bumped into David Brodigan from Beamore in Redz Bar, Drogheda despite having only lived yards away from each other for years. It must have been destiny! David proposed to his long-term girlfriend when on holidays in Lanzarote in 2009 and they eventually walked down the aisle on April 29th, 2011 in the Church of St. Michael, Darver. Little did they know that they shared their big day with another quite well known couple – Kate Middleton and Prince William much to the enjoyment of everybody! The reception took place in stunning Darver Castle and saw wedding guests arrive from as far afield as the US and Brussels. Drogheda band The Enemies entertained the crowd into the early hours of the morning. The bridesmaids were Diane Guildea, Gemma Fagan and Marianne Wilson, while the groomsmen were 13-year old Darragh Brodigan, Niall Bennett and David’s brother Mark. Sevenyear old Shannon took on the duties as flowergirl. The couple headed off to the Rockies, Canada and Alaska for their slightly different honeymoon, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Shane McEneany weds Nicola Kerr Slane girl Nicola married her sweetheart Shane McEneany on May 7th in St Patrick’s Church, Slane. The Castleblayney man proved to be a real romantic when he proposed to Nicola in September 2009 while on holiday in Venice. The bridesmaids were cousins Lizzie and Caroline McCabe and childhood friends Suzanne Finnegan and Jenny Shaw. Kieran Allmark weds Catherine Kane Catherine Kane from Ratoath and Kieran Allmark originally from Farncombe, Surrey first met in Dublin a few years back. Kieran popped the question in June 2009 and Catherine was completely bowled over by her man’s romantic streak. Luck was on their side for in October that year the couple raised a glass to winning the €15,000 wedding prize of the ‘Mr & Mrs’ competition in the d Hotel! Their big day was set for June 25th, 2011 in St Mary’s Church, Drogheda followed by a reception in the d Hotel. The Flower Yard, Mornington arranged the flowers, the entertainment was provided by the Vard Sisters and The Hit Connection, and the video- and photography were taken care of by local men Kevin Byrne and Jimmy Weldon respectively. The couple was accompanied by fouryear-old chief bridesmaid Emma as well as sisters Marie and Sarah. The groomsmen were seven-year-old John as well as Liam and Seán Allmark. Method: 1. Prepare marinade: In a large bowl, combine yogurt, soy sauce, lemon juice, red chilli powder, salt, crushed garlic, crushed ginger, corriander, and cumin then mix well. 2. Slice chicken breast into squares (roughly 2 inches x 2 inches) and add to the marinade. Set aside for 1 to 2 hours. 3. Slice onions and tomatoes into four pieces each and cut bell pepper into square slices (remove the seeds). 4. Preheat oven to 45ºF (23ºC or gas mark 8). Remove chicken cubes from marinade and place in a baking pan, cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Check to see if chicken juice is running clear – if not, bake for additional 15 minutes. 5. Remove foil, add tomatoes, onions, and bell pepper and boil on low heat for 15 minutes (or longer if desired) to brown the chicken and dry excess water. 6. Culture Night 2011, various times and venues Culture Night 2011, the renowned late night of free culture which was created in Temple Bar, Dublin’s Cultural Quarter in 2006, takes place in a record 30 regions across Ireland on Friday, September 23rd, offering the public a wide range of cultural attractions and the opportunity to visit iconic cultural venues, buildings and spaces for free. With this in mind Droghedeans are invited to have a look inside the beautiful Georgian building Barlow House on West Street from 6.30pm9pm, and entry is free. In a fairground tent, alongside tea-leaf fortune-tellers, an amazing discovery is made by accident. But who actually made it? Mick Barnfather (Peepolykus, Right Size, Complicité) directs this extraordinary disaster-comedy set in 1850s America, where the quest for pain relief takes a detour via lunacy, addiction and a duck pond! The Best

interview

of Everything

with Drogheda filmmaker Frank Best project I’ve worked on: I’ve enjoyed all the films I’ve made but I’d probably have to say my last film, ‘140’. I gathered 140 filmmakers in 140 locations around the world and had them shoot 140 seconds at the same time (June 21st 2009) – I then cut an 80 minute documentary from all the clips I got. It was a unique idea that people really got excited about and I loved collaborating with filmmakers from all around the world. The film recently won the Bronze Palm Award at the Mexico International Film Festival. Best script I’ve written/read: Written: I have a script called ‘The Wolf of Nevermore’ that I wrote a few years ago, it’s a ghost story. It’s not quite right yet, but I love the idea and the atmosphere of it. I’m always thinking about it. I hope to get back to it some day and possibly make it. Read: ‘Some Like It Hot’ by Billy Wilder and I.A.L Diamond! One of my favourite films of all time too, but the script is a master class in screenwriting. Nothing is wasted. It’s lean, concise, beautifully crafted and utterly hilarious. Pure Genius! A must for any aspiring screenwriter. Best Irish actor: Probably Brendan Gleeson, I think he’s the actor I would most like to work with at the moment. He has a forceful screen presence that draws you in and holds you there. Best career moment so far: Winning the Crystal Heart Award in 2006 for my film Emily’s Song, which I made with Thomas Kennedy. Judy Stewart presented me with the award. Her father was my favourite actor of all time, James Stewart. As she gave me the award on stage in front of an audience of a thousand people she whispered, ‘My dad would have been proud of you.’ That was special. (I also met my wife at that festival!)

Best source of inspiration: People. My family especially. People I meet and the stories they tell. It all goes in, gets stored away and eventually comes out in what I write.

seriously. Short cuts will only let you down. Try to find a unique story and take your time with the script, get it right. Get skilled people you trust involved. And do the best work you can. Make Best theme/subject for a film that just seems to work something you’d be proud to put your name to. And with audiences: The best response I ever had from then get it out there for people to see. a film was a short documentary I did about my grandfather called ‘Bill, For Short’. In it my brother Best message you can get across using film as a puts on a pair of our grandfather’s shoes and we go medium: Hope. With film you have the ability to walking to his old house, his pub, his old work place inspire, change and educate, on both sides of the camera, in production with the people around you and eventually his grave. It really struck a chord with people. I think so many people could relate to and on the screen to your audience. that. I still get people coming up to me in the street Best location to shoot: Drogheda as a whole offers and saying how much they liked it. So I guess it has so much. It’s a great place to shoot. People are to be something honest and from the heart. helpful and open. Visually it’s great and you have the stunning natural beauty of the Boyne Valley Best advice I ever received: ‘Don’t let the turkeys get you down’ (and others variations!) From on your doorstep. I hope to shoot many more films here. my dad, my wife, and others. It’s a positive reminder to keep going, keep believing you’re Best childhood memory: Going on Saturday doing the right thing, no matter what the adventures, usually out the old quarry tracks doubting Thomas’ say. toward Beaulieu Wood. That really sparked my Best motivation: Good films. I recently rewatched ‘The French Connection’ and was blown away by it! I emailed all the actors for ‘Derelict’ and made it part of their homework! So much of it’s ragged intensity and raw energy is what I hope to do in ‘Derelict’. Made me want to go out and shoot that weekend! Best thing about working in the film industry: Collaborating with talented people. It’s always a joy when you bring something to the table, like an idea or a script and then as people get involved watch them bring more and more to it, making it better then you could have ever imagined.

imagination. We’d be gone from early morning till tea-time! Different times! Best thing about being married: Having a constant source of support and encouragement. The thing about film is that you face a lot of rejection, so it’s important to be backed up be someone who believes in you. Best drink: The best drink I have ever had was on my honeymoon. It was a hot chocolate in a restaurant called Angelina in Paris. It was absolutely amazing! In fact I was so inspired I actually wrote a short film script about it when I got home – also called ‘Angelina’.
