Interview Why did you want to become a stand-up comic and how did your first show go? I was always the annoying attention seeker at school, the class clown! So when I was 17 a bunch of my friends and teachers entered me into a comedy competition. It was in a venue along the docks in Dublin called The Waterfront. I didn’t do too great though – I came joint fourth! Eddie Bannon, the curator of The Cat Laughs in Kilkenny won.
French Alps. I curate the festival. There’s enormous planning involved as it goes on for a week but it’s brilliant fun! I’m a snowboarder and always wanted to combine it with comedy so Altitude was born! Snowboard all day, eat in the sunshine, go for a sauna and party til dawn... What more could you want! I also love the Cat Laughs in Kilkenny and the Edinburgh Festival. It’s an opportunity to hang out and see everyone because, believe it or not, the road can be quite lonesome.
How is your tour going so far? I’m releasing a new DVD, which hasn’t got a name yet! It’s my first UK release so this tour is a warm-up for that. My Vicar Street show on June 18th is going to be recorded for the Irish leg of the DVD.
You’re a regular on RTE’s The Panel – what’s that like? The Panel is the easiest thing ever – it’s like a bunch of friends sitting around and talking s**t at the table! Occasionally, we talk about serious stuff but largely we’re just p***ing around.
The Max Factor
Do you ever get stage fright? No way... I suppose it’s so natural to me now. If it’s a big gig you get in the zone for it and get on with it. Does your family find you funny? Of course! They, along with my pals and teachers, put me into comedy in the first place. Thankfully I’ve a very healthy relationship with my parents. My dad only comes along to shows if he thinks there’s a chance of danger! So he showed up at my Shankill Road gig, the Falls Road and Mountjoy Prison...
As a kid Dublin comedian Andrew Maxwell was the class clown. Here, Carmel Riggs discovers not too much has changed since...
Where do you get the inspiration for your material? Everything and anything! It could be something that happened in my private life, a news bulletin, or a quirky story that I heard!
come to mind, like Patrice O’Neal, Doug Stanhope and Louis C.K. There’s feck all rivalry on the Irish scene. All the guys are mates of mine and make me laugh! Who has been the biggest influence on your career? No one specific – all the boys who started me off in comedy such as Ardal O’Hanlon, Kevin Gildea, Barry Murphy... (pictured left).
Who’s your favourite comedian? A lot of American comics
Which festival do most like performing at? My own! Three years ago myself and Marcus Brigstocke started Altitude which takes place every year in Meribel on The
You’ve made some UK TV appearances on Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Are you planning any more TV work? Yeah, I’ve various things in the pipeline with BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Scotland as well as some appearances in panel shows in the autumn and a couple of primetime shows in Ireland. If you weren’t a comedian what would you be? I honestly don’t know! With my personality you either like me or you don’t. I can’t think of anything else I could do that wouldn’t leave me looking quite shady! Andrew Maxwell performs at the d hotel on Thursday, July 1st at 8pm.Tickets €18.50 are now on sale from the d hotel reception. Follow Andrew on twitter@ andrewismaxwell

here will be no shortage of glamour next month when TV3 star Lisa Cannon arrives at Bellewstown Races to judge the Essential Best Dressed competition. The Xposé presenter can’t wait to witness the style on Friday, July 2nd – however it’s the person with the most individuality that is most likely to catch her attention! ‘I’ll be looking for someone who is stylish, sophisticated and has a touch of panache with individuality,’ she says. ‘Obviously, with the release of the new Sex and the City movie, there are so many trends to choose like mix and match, vintage, high street and couture – but the
key is to be different. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a look that’s individual.’ Fashionistas preparing to do battle can take satisfaction in the knowledge that the first prize is a Globe Travel/Panorama Holiday for one week for two people to Fuerteventura, plus €500 spending money. The runner-up will walk away with a €500 voucher for Jacqui’s Boutique, Laurence Street, Drogheda, while the third prize consists of a Weekend for two in a luxurious King Room in Killarney’s 4-Star Dromhall Hotel, including 2 Nights B&B plus Dinner at Kayne’s Bistro on one evening. The men can get in on the action too, with a €500 voucher for Chris Curtis Menswear, Dyer Street, Drogheda, up for grabs! Also, the Miss Teen Bellewstown will be crowned once again with the winner taking home a voucher for Scotch Hall. Interview You’ve become famous almost overnight, can you describe what that’s been like for you? It’s crazy! It all started from a simple video of ours that was put on Hot Country – a programme on Channel 279 on Sky. Our friend put the clip on YouTube not thinking that what happened would happen! It’s been amazing and we’re just going with what’s happening... Where did the name Crystal Swing come from? Originally my mother Mary thought if it. She was always a fan of country singer Crystal Gayle so when she started out on her own eight years ago that’s the name she went under. I think the name really suits us as we’re just an upbeat swingy act! What’s the highlight of your music career so far? Obviously getting to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show was amazing – I still can’t believe it happened! Also meeting Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show. Ryan’s such a gentleman; I’ve always loved him. What was it like meeting The band on The Ellen Ellen and DeGeneres Show appearing on her show? It was such an honour to be asked in the first place. I wasn’t a bit nervous, and couldn’t wait to get on the stage! But it seemed like it was over in a second. Ellen couldn’t have been nicer – she’s just one of those really nice people and doesn’t take things too seriously. How has your success gone down with your school mates? All my friends are really happy for us – and Derek’s too! They knew that this was what I always wanted to do. It’s always been my dream to become a singer. We’re so lucky to have the best friends in the world! Even before this all happened they always came to our gigs and supported us. At what age did you start singing? I’ve been singing all the way up. As kids Derek and I were always into acting and drama. I suppose you could say we’ve always had a flair for the stage. It’s not work – I have a love for this job!
Dervla pictured with her mum Mary and brother Derek
Do you and Derek argue much on the road? Like all families we have our moments. But on the whole we’re really lucky. We all have an equal input into the band. Who are your musical influences? I’ve such a wide taste in music. I like Irish country My mobile phone! I don’t know how people singer Susan McCann and I think Shania survived without them before – I’d feel naked Twain is amazing – she’s someone I always without mine! looked up to. I’m also a huge fan of Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. What has the future got in store for Crystal Have you any advice for teenagers who would Swing? We have loads happening. We’re currently on tour all over Ireland and in June like to pursue a career in music? If you want we’re playing at the Flat Lake Festival in something badly enough I think you can have Monaghan with Lily Allen. She wants to sing it. People think it happened overnight for us ‘He Drinks Tequila’ with us and then we’ll get but to be honest we’ve put in years of hard work. I also think you shouldn’t be afraid to go to sing one of her songs. We’re also performing out and do something different. Look at us, we two songs at Electric Picnic – I can’t wait! love our country and showband music and now Crystal Swing are playing LIVE in the Marquee at thousands of young people around the country Bellewstown Races after racing on Saturday, July 3rd. Entry to Races & Crystal Swing LIVE is €30. Visit are getting into it too. It’s mad! www.bellewstownraces.ie for more details What do you make of The X Factor? I love it! Forget the recession Funtasia Waterpark in Drogheda is giving a free ticket to their fabulous waterpark – to every primary school child in the country! ‘There is a lot of doom and gloom around and we want to do something to cheer everyone up,’ said MD Bernard McCormick. So far Funtasia has already contacted some 300 primary schools who have enjoyed school tours at the entertainment centre. Those schools will shortly be receiving some 120,000 free waterpark tickets for their pupils. The tickets, normally priced at €11, can be used anytime during the school holidays. ‘We want to tell every primary school, not just the ones we know, that this is available for their pupils too. All they have to do is contact Funtasia on 041 9898000 or email info@funtasia.ie, tell us how many pupils they have, and we’ll post out their free tickets,’ added the Funtasia boss.
Drogheda Samba Festival Drogheda Samba Festival, which takes place from June 25th to 27th, is alive and well despite the recession. It is spreading to more venues than ever before this year with music and dance to suit a wide range of tastes. ‘We have had to really struggle to get the money together to keep the festival going and have had a series of fund-raising events in the past few months,’ said director Phil Conyngham. This year will see a new Drogheda community samba band taking part – Samba Mamas in Pyjamas. Another addition is a series of late-night world music gigs in the Purple Room at the Star & Crescent, which are being assisted by sponsorship from Droichead Arts Centre. As usual the festival will serve as a reunion for Irish samba bands with all the usual bands such as Masamaba, Moro 16 and Happy City from Dublin, Samboeire from Sligo, Jacare from Kilkenny and Mad Hatters from Drogheda. They are joined by festival first timers Samba Cuisle from Tralee. Meanwhile Arco Iris from Cambridge, who will be coming to Drogheda for the 8th year in a row, have promised they will have a large line-up. McPhails will, as usual, feature the best of the samba groups while the d Hotel will again host the festival launch and the hugely popular salsa night with one of Ireland’s top Latin bands Mangeira and salsa DJ Rico.

‘‘I love Samantha! She’s a total man-eater and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her and I like that in a personality. She probably goes through too many men though! I’m going to go see the movie in Swords with a group of my girlfriends – it’ll be a low-key affair but I can’t wait.’
Jane Clarke, Termon Abbey ‘Definitely Charlotte! She’s very practical, stylish and loves children. I’ve always loved the TV show and watched the whole box set while waiting for my three-month old son to arrive. Now I can’t wait to see what the girls get up to in the sequel!’

in Venice and picked up some fabulous hat pins. Vintage fairs are also a great place to find quirky pieces. My display room has around 60 different pieces in it so people can come in and see what they like. They can order from what’s there or I can make up something specially. The creativity side of the job is what appeals to me most. I love coming up with new ideas; working with colour and different textures, ribbons and beads. Nude colours are really popular this season as are the nautical theme of navy, red and white. I find race-goers are more adventurous with their hair pieces as it’s not always about what’s in fashion – it’s all about the style.

To top it all the family business he’s been running for the last five years turns 75 this month – and where his late grandfather, the original Owen Fox, and his father Donnie alive today they’d be the proudest men in town. Boasting a staff of 12 – including two watchmakers and two goldsmiths – Fox’s has come a long way since its inception on Shop Street in 1935. ‘Fourteen years after establishing the shop, my grandfather passed away,’ says

Almost three decades later the Tullyallen man took over the reigns of the business in 2005, bringing the same family traditions and ideas into the 21st century. His biggest challenge to date has been the expansion of their goldsmith department which is run by Ian McGuirk and his brother, David. The onsite workshop allows the skilled craftsmen to design and create unique pieces of jewellery for customers. ‘We take great pride in our bespoke jewellery,’ says Owen. ‘Most of our jewellery are designed and made on the premises, especially wedding and engagement rings. Clear out clutter: Too much stuff can make a room feel cramped so arrange all CD and book collections in closed cabinets or floating wall shelves. By freeing up precious floor space, the room will instantly feel airy and open.
Use soft, light colours: Dark,
warm colours might make an area feel cozy and intimate but light colours on upholstery and walls will immediately create a feeling of space. Use monochromatic colour schemes - colours that are in the same colour family – to achieve the desired effect, especially soft tones of blues and greens.

Let there be light: Be it natural or artificial, light is the best decorating tool that you have in any room but especially in a small space. A well-lit room will immediately look larger so get rid of heavy draperies to allow any natural light shine through. In dark rooms, recessed lighting and lamps offer a clean, streamlined look while also open up the room to make it look and feel bigger.

Where you place your furniture is instrumental in freeing up space in a room. e59, The Arranging pieces of furniture Lighthouse, in the centre of a small room Drogheda will make it seem even smaller. So it is vital that furniture and accessories are placed along the walls, leaving the walkway free. Remember, scale is a very important tool when decorating a small room so furniture needs to be reflective of the room size.

It’s the thought that counts... Award-winning local designer Andrew Christopher Dunne looks at how to add those all important finishing touches to your garden
T
here are many elements to be considered when designing a garden, some are obvious like planting and seated areas, others less so, such as where to put the washing line, the positioning of the outside tap. None-theless a good garden designer will give every tiny element of a design, the consideration it deserves. At our practice we design everything from the furniture to the position of the garden pots. It may sound over-thetop but to make a garden work you must put thought into every area of your outdoor space. Whether it’s the size of your water feature, or the location of a garden bench
you must start to think like a designer. No longer will you see a large pot in the garden centre and buy it just because it is half price. Now you will consider exactly where you will place it, what you will put in it and what it will look like from all the different views in your garden. Okay, I know it is always hard to resist a bargain but if you designed a pot into your garden in the first place you will end up with exactly the right effect, instead of a mismatched collection of garden centre rejects. Whatever you are going to put into your garden, you just have to give it that extra bit of thought to give it the designer
look. Lighting in a garden is a perfect example where a little thought goes a long way. Done right, a welldesigned lighting scheme is a stunning and valuable asset to any garden. Done wrong it can look like a landing strip for a 747. So try this: instead of choosing lights by the light fitting, choose lights for the light they can cast and position them to illuminate architectural plants and features and not just the space around them. The same goes for garden features such as sculpture and
Andrew’s top tips:
28
E Drogheda
• Never put two garden features together – as one will take away from the other. • When choosing pots choose simple designs and colours as it is what you plant in your pots that you will be looking at. • Place sculptures or planters at the end of paths as a focal point. Or line them up with views from your house. • Safety first! Always get a qualified electrician to install your outdoor lighting and water features. • If you can’t afford lighting place tee lights in glass jars around your garden for atmosphere. Use at least 50!

furniture. Choose pieces that are in keeping with your original design. If you have a contemporary style garden, a rectangular table and chairs with glass or stainless steel looks best, but in a less formal design this will look out of place. The biggest mistake
you can make when choosing a garden feature is to choose it based solely on its own merit, i.e. ‘I bought it because it was gorgeous’. There should never be one item in your garden that stands out, they should all work together to form the overall picture. I guess what I have been trying to do in this series is to encourage everyone to give our gardens the thought they deserve. They can be so much more than just a lawn and a patio. After all, with volcanos, global warming and recessions we will be spending a lot more time in them, so why not make the most of this most valuable outdoor space?

Philip Cox weds Terry O’Hagan The Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert in Slane will always be a very memorable concert for Terry O’Hagan and Philip Cox as this is where they first met. Six years later on December 29th, 2009 this loved-up couple said ‘I do’. The marriage ceremony was held in the Star of the Sea Church, Mornington. Terry is the daughter of John D. and Sarah O’Hagan and Philip the son of John and Mary Cox. Terry had one bridesmaid on the day, her sister Clodagh, and best man duties went to Philip’s brother Graham. The cake was baked by a friend of the family and beautifully iced by Mary Reilly. Terry looked stunning in her dress from Ophelia Bridal, Laurence Street which was complimented by her flowers from The Floweryard, Mornington. The reception was held in Farnham Estate, Cavan where the guests were entertained for the night by The Irish Rat Pack. The newlyweds honeymooned later in New Zealand for three weeks and Fiji for one week. Photos by Jimmy Weldon

But it was flowergirl Dervla de Hoog and pageboy Matthew Duggan who stole the show! The weather was horrendous throughout the day but that didn’t hinder the celebrations and when Goodfellas took to the stage that night the dance floor was never empty! The happy couple went on a well-deserved four-week honeymoon to Thailand and Vietnam. Photos by Orlaigh Finegan

Claire’s two sisters Helen and Louise Donnelly did a fantastic job as her bridesmaids, as did bestman Warren Nawn and groomsman Richard Smyth, Keith’s brother. The newlyweds’ reception was held in the d Hotel were The Seducers kept everyone on their feet into the early hours of the morning. The bride and groom had many destinations for their honeymoon, namely Fort Lauderdale Florida, an eight-night Eastern Caribbean Cruise and what was supposed to be a three-night stay in New York turned into a week-and-a-half due to the ash cloud. Behind The Wheel drove? BMW 5 Series. A friend of mine owns one and he was good enough to let me have a spin in it. What’s your dream drive and why? Ferrari because it’s the ultimate machine.
What’s the worst thing about driving in Drogheda? I’d have to say the traffic system. The layout on West Street is an absolute joke, and the pedestrian crossings at the Tholsel cause havoc with the traffic. How often do you change your car? Approximately every
three years. I don’t like to have the same car for too long. Who is your insurer and why? Aviva and I’m with them because they always give me the best policy at the cheapest price. They’re right for me anyway! What’s on your CD player? Michael Bublé...he’s good easy listening.
Who would be your dream passenger? My wife is number Martin Hughes, one naturally, but if I had a Ashfield second choice I would have to say Kelly Brook.
What was your first bike and what age were you? My First bike was a Suzuki Bandit 600. I started riding bikes in December 2008, I love bad weather!

Small Talk with Donie Grennan owner of McPhails Bar & Off-Licence
Describe your day to day role? No day is the same here! When I’m not busy promoting and driving my business, I’m ferrying my children to their various after-school activities. I’m also involved in coaching a local junior rugby team. What do you love most about your job? I’m lucky to have great staff and very loyal customers. Because of them my job is made easy! What was your first job and how much did you earn? Delivering papers for 10 bob a week in Dublin. Even though I was only 10 years of age I still had to do an interview for the job. My first real job was as an Industrial Engineer. I qualified from the Regional Technical College in Dundalk. Your greatest professional achievement? It has to be purchasing McPhails Bar & Off-Licence on Laurence Street. Describe your work style? Delegation! I

have had to review our whole operation and tighten up on all aspects of the business. What was the last thing you ‘googled’? I don’t google!
think encouragement and motivation are very important in any business. What are your pet hates in the workplace? Where do I start! I can’t stand lack of enthusiasm, sloppiness and bad presentation. Also I’ve a big problem with bad time keeping. Who do you most admire in business? Michael O’Leary as he doesn’t take any crap from anybody. He doesn’t believe in red tape or let anything get in the way of what he wants to achieve. He really shows what an Irish company is capable of doing.
What mobile phone do you use and what network are you with? I’m with O2 and I have a 10-year-old Nokia. It’s a bit battered but perfectly functional, like myself! I was away recently and forgot to bring my charger and when I went to get a new one in the phone shop they just laughed at me. Is there any technology you refuse to use? No, I’ll try anything. The iMac is my latest gadget. Do you have a mantra in life? This is not a dress rehearsal!
Where do you like to have a quiet pint? When I want to get away from it all I go to Darbys of Togher and, of course, McPhails.
If you could change anything in the town what would it be? Reverse the demise of West Street and reduce rates and litter. I’d also improve accessibility to and from Drogheda with FREE PARKING to encourage people into town.
Has the current economic climate changed your spending habits? Absolutely, everything has had to be scaled down. We
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Above ground please God – and still in McPhails!

The Best of
Everything Louth Senior Football Captain
- Paddy Keenan year and they were expected to hammer us but we were very unlucky to draw after extra time. I also had a good game that day so I have good memories of it. Best thing about playing Best game: Probably against for the wee county: The Tyrone in the championship people you meet from in 2006 in Navan. Tyrone were all over the county all All-Ireland champions the previous working toward the same goal. We’re all working hard to make the breakthrough in the championship. Best thing about being Louth captain: Being recognised as a leader on the team and that other players respect you and look up to you to a certain degree.
Best GAA moment: It’s a toss up between winning the Louth Senior Championship in 2003 with St Patrick’s as it was the first time the club won it or winning it again in 2007 as I was captain that day. Best career advice: Always train hard and take something from every single match or training session you’re involved in. Best achievement: Probably being nominated for an All-Star in 2007. It was the first time a Louth player was nominated for the award since Gerry Farrell in the 1970s so it was good to see a Louth player recognised for a national award. Best way to unwind after a match: Probably relax at home and watch a few DVDs. Best childhood memory: Playing with Lordship National School (either soccer or Gaelic). We had some brilliant teams and missed out on a chance of playing in a primary 46

schools World Cup in France ’98 because we lost on penalties. A lot of those players now have championship medals with St Pat’s. Best thing about being in your twenties: Not being in your thirties! Best snack: Anything with chocolate. Best drink: Tea or a cold bottle of Corona (in the offseason of course!) Best restaurant: Magees Bistro in Carlingford. Best hideaway: Anywhere in America, I have been there four or five times in the last few years. Best hobby: Working on cars, I have spent way too much on my own car in the past year and have my eye on one or two projects for the summer. Best read: Have mostly been reading autobiographies lately but Motley Crue’s ‘The Dirt’ is pretty eye opening. Best film: The Lord of the Rings, Shawshank Redemption or Trainspotting are all good. I am more into DVD box sets like The Wire and The Soprano’s though.
