’ll be the first to admit that when a friend revealed she had taken up pole dancing a couple of years ago, I was gobsmacked! I simply couldn’t shake off the seedy image in my head. But how naïve was I? For not only is pole dancing the latest fitness craze in Ireland, it’s fast becoming Drogheda ladies’ most favourite pastime. This month, E talks to two local girls (pg 10) who are competing in this year’s Irish Pole Championships and don’t miss our fabulous competition (pg 12) to win a removable X-Pole and an 8-week pole dancing course, courtesy of Labfitness. Here at Essential we are always thinking about our next photo opportunity so when we heard that the hair, make-up and fashion students at D.I.F.E had been set a photo shoot challenge by their tutors we had to get involved! E caught up with the students days before the photo shoot and all is revealed on pg 14. Car enthusiasts will have a licence to be thrilled at the ALMC Motorshow on May 9th... Boyne 10k Run
Racing into town on Sunday, May 2nd to cheer on all those who are taking part in the Boyne 10k Run, including Drogheda’s Borough Councillors! The charity run leaves the Battle of the Boyne site at 10am and will make its way into town via the Boyne Cable Bridge and the Rathmullan Road before returning to the starting point again.

t will be thighs the limit for Drogheda’s pole dancing queens when they take to the stage of Fusion at the end of the month. The ladies are competing in the Irish Pole Championships on Saturday, May 22nd and are hoping their dance routines – which are up to five minutes long – will be enough to impress the judges. Up to a thousand spectators are expected on the night which is in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

‘There will be 36 competitors on the night, each entered at three different levels and representing nine clubs nationwide,’ says organiser Mark McDonnell of Labfitness. ‘All of the routines are fitness-based. There will be no skimpy clothes or stilettos – we are taking pole dancing out of the gutter!’ Breakfast Show DJs Bernard and Keith of i105-107 Radio are hosting the Championships which is now in its fourth year. Representing Labfitness is Tanya Gavrilova from Rivercourt, who has a pole in her sitting room to practise her routine. The 28-year-old began pole dancing two 10

years ago and has been hooked ever since. ‘At the beginning my friends and family couldn’t understand why I would want to do it,’ she says. ‘But they soon realised there was nothing sexy or sleazy about it.’ This is Tanya’s second time to enter the Championship so she is very much aware of what it’s like performing to a live audience. ‘I was extremely nervous last time but I’m hoping to be much calmer this year,’ she says. ‘At the end of the day it’s about having fun – not showing off! ‘I’ve made a lot of friends through pole dancing; of course, there is some competition between us all but that’s only natural! ‘The Pole Championships is our chance to show all those who are coming to support us that pole dancing is about fitness – nothing else!’ Her rival Edel O’Sullivan, from Duleek, insists she wasn’t ‘superfit’ when she started pole dancing classes at Labfitness in January 2009. ‘I saw an ad for it in one of the local papers and I decided to give it a go,’ she says. ‘Rugby had always been my sport but I had stopped playing a couple of years and I wanted to get fit again; to do something different. ‘From the moment I started pole dancing I loved it. I have a new lease of energy and my upper body has completely toned up. ‘Of course the family overreacted at first but once I explained it to them they
were fine. Not enough people are aware that fitness pole dancing is not associated with stripping.’ Edel has the full support of her family and friends who will be in the audience cheering her on when she competes in the Irish Pole Championships for the first time. She says: ‘I’m delighted to be taking part. Obviously, I’m very nervous about performing but the whole point of doing the competition was to challenge myself, so I’m just going to try and enjoy it! ‘I’m told that the adrenaline will kick in on the night so fingers crossed it does!’ Tickets for the Irish Pole Championships are now on sale at €10 each. Life’s a beach for Mornington lass Siobhan McAuley (pictured) who’s made it through to the regional final of Ms Planet Beach International 2010. The 21-year-old went up against a bevy of beauties recently and is now looking forward to wowing the judges in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin on August 29th. The winner of the Ireland final will go forward to the grand final in Reno Nevada on an all expenses paid trip to represent Ireland. ‘I’m so proud,’ says the NCI student. ‘I’m living the dream! But I will have a lot of work to do to promote myself for the final and will be relying on the whole of Drogheda to get behind me!’

Second year students from the Hairdressing, Beauty and Fashion Design courses have been set a challenge by their tutors to combine their skills and produce a high-quality photograph showcasing this. The four images will be judged by Essential and the winning photo will grace the front cover of your favourite magazine next month! According to Eamon Kierans, hairdressing tutor at D.I.F.E, multi-skilling is now a feature of the working world and the hair, make-up and fashion design industry is no exception.

Dramatic eyes will complete the look.’ Stylist Lisa Magee knew exactly how she wanted the Flamenco photo to appear. ‘The inspiration behind it was structure and colour,’ she said. ‘The competition is a great learning experience and has opened my mind up to the bigger world of fashion. When the opportunity presented itself I jumped at the chance to take part.’ Playing the role of the ‘40s Gal’ is Leona McDonnell who is under the helm of stylist Eleanor Rogers, who said she would be ‘a jack of all trades by the time the challenge was over!’ ‘This is a finger-wave look – and with Leona’s striking eyes there is a Liza Minnelli feel to it,’ added Eleanor. ‘The bright colour brings the 40s era right to up to date.’ Keeping it simple is the Natural Beauty group which is also led by hairdresser Eleanor Rogers. She said: ‘We wanted a more plain and simple backdrop this time as this shoot is all about the lighting. We’re just going to zone in on the model’s face and hair – nothing else matters!’

Design D’Looks on Stockwell Street sells top labels like Prada, Gucci and D&G to name a few and has been an instant success from the moment it’s doors opened. ‘The minute we opened, we could have filled two shops with the amount of stuff that arrived,’ says owner Treza Martin. ‘Everything in the shop is upmarket. Unlike other secondhand stores, you don’t have to rummage

We literally turned Mam’s shop around in two weeks and haven’t looked back since.’ The shop attracts all age groups from late teenagers to women in their 80s and the items on sale come in sizes 6 to 28. Design D’Looks has a strict policy for the clothes it accepts and the shop operates on a six-week 50/50 sale-or-return basis. Eyes The eye area holds a lot of oils and this is
what causes eye-shadow to wear off and crease. To avoid this, I like to apply some concealer all over the eyelid and then mattify the area by using a small amount of loose powder, or a neutral coloured eye-shadow, all over the lid too. The oils are absorbed by the matte eye-shadow and it also acts as a great base for whatever colour eye-shadow you wish to use over it. A good matte eyeshadow to try is ‘Amanda’ from Fuchsia in Scotch Hall. To prevent in-grown hairs you should exfoliate regularly and use a hydrating body lotion daily. If you suffer from ingrown hairs you can dab antiseptic cream or oil on them which will help draw the hairs out. For an alternative remedy, soak a square of white bread in water and apply to the area.
You need to be exfoliating your face at least twice a week and moisturising daily. It is likely that if you start doing this your make-up will sit better on your skin. You should also use a mask once a week and go for a professional facial once a month. It would be worth considering changing to a mineralbased make-up.

Interior designer Emma Byrne shows how to revamp your bathroom without getting worked up into a lather…
E
ven though it is one of the most used rooms in the household the bathroom often gets left until last in the planning and design stakes, usually being seen as a merely functional room. Your bathroom is the room that gives the widest scope for spending in the whole home and really the first decision is how much to set your budget at: is this a quick facelift or a complete makeover? Whether revamping an existing bathroom or starting from scratch, you can easily spend a fortune. Unlike most other big spends in your home you cannot take your bathroom with you and if you intend to sell your home in the future, take care not to overcapitalise. When at the ‘budget’ end of the bathroom market, it’s really hard to beat the ‘Kullen’ set ‘Kullen’ set e95, Ikea from Ikea in terms of value for money. This five-piece set for €95 is plain functional white and provides loads of storage. With a change of handles to some nice glass or metal knobs you have a very inexpensive quick-fix. Most bathrooms are tiled and, again, the
price range can go from cheap... to infinity! If your tiles are plain in colour but the grout is stained or falling out then it is a relatively

simple job to dig out the grout and re-grout and give the bathroom a refreshed look. As long as floor tiles have been laid evenly most tilers can simply lay new ones over the top, but you will then need a plumber to adjust the height of floor wastes for the cistern and sink. When choosing a colour scheme for your bathroom, the only foolproof way to do it is to stick to the basics for the toilet, sink etc – white, white or white! We have all seen skips full of avocado and peach bathroom suites
which were the ‘in thing’ when installed. I also tend to steer clients towards more classic shapes which I think work well in both a contemporary and modern home, and will date really well. Heating in a bathroom is also a big consideration and heated towel rails manage to be both stylish and functional. the art of
planting Continuing his series on how to design your own garden, award-winning garden designer Andrew Christopher Dunne, looks at the often complicated world of plants
‘I
know nothing about plants and I want a low-maintenance garden.’ This phrase has been the opening point of conversation uttered to every landscaper and garden designer in the country for the past 10 years. Unfortunately, this has resulted in literally thousands of dull, boring and downright naff gardens all over Ireland. It is often assumed that a low-maintenance garden must have very little plants and be simply covered in nasty gravel and masses of paving or decking. Well, I am here to dispel this myth. Plants are the heart and soul of any garden. They provide not only colour and scent, but also sound, movement and, above all, atmosphere. As for maintenance, once you have prepared the soil properly and planted enough plants then the maintenance is minimal. I have hundreds of plants in my own garden and I would only weed it twice or three times a year, and I never water! Planting a garden can be a daunting task and the garden centre can be a truly intimidating place to the uninitiated. Not only is there a seemingly endless supply of plants but some genius decided to put all the names in Latin! Well, I will try to make things a bit easier but, to start, here are some common

terms you need to know: Shrub - This is any plant in your garden that doesn’t die back in winter. They form the backbone of any planting scheme and can be large or small. Perennial - These are the plants that sprout up in springtime, flower all summer long and then die back in winter. But best of all, they come back the following year twice as big. Annual - These plants flower for one season only and do not come back the following year. They are cheap and cheerful but often gaudy and old-fashioned. Mulch - This is a term used to describe any material that can be laid on the ground to help suppress weeds. It can be bark, compost or gravel. So, once again we are faced with the question of where to start? Well, assuming you know nothing about plants I
would suggest a trip to the garden centre. But don’t go empty-handed, take with you your rough drawing of your garden and maybe some simple measurements so that you can work out roughly how many plants you should buy. Next, armed with a big trolly, start looking for structural plants. These are things like shrubs and evergreens. They will hold your planting scheme together when the perennials die back in winter. You don’t need many just check the label for eventual sizes. Draw a little circle on your plan to represent where you would like to place them. Next, look for perennials to fill in the gaps. These are the plants that will give the wow factor to your garden. Plant them in groups of odd numbers (3,5,7) as this looks more natural and gives a bigger impact than lots of different colours dotted around your garden. Finally, make sure to buy lots of manure or compost to mix through the soil as this will

not only feed your plants but it will also hold moisture in the ground, thus reducing the need for watering. As for choosing the plants themselves I would simply say this: read the labels and make sure that you choose the right plant for the right place, for example if you have a shady garden choose plants that like shade. The same applies for wet gardens, dry gardens, poor soil etc; the label will tell all.

Mulch your beds. A thick layer of bark will keep the weeds down, reduce the need for watering and look nice. Plant enough plants. The plants should grow into each other as this blocks light to the ground and therefore stops the weeds from growing. Don’t just buy plants for flowers. Think about the leaves, the scent and the shape. A garden with only flowers will be short lived and can look gaudy. If it all seems too much find yourself a good garden designer who can do it all for you.

Timothy Mallon weds Lorna Murray After 12 years together, Drogheda girl Lorna Murray and Timothy Mallon, from Bellewstown, finally said ‘I do’ on January 15th. Not one to ‘rush perfection’, Lorna arrived 40 minutes late for the ceremony which took place at St Theresa’s Church, Bellewstown. Her bridesmaids were Jackie Hynes, Emma Bidwell, Sam Harmon and Caroline McGowan. To accompany the girls were bestman Niall Mallon and groomsmen Michael Murray, Gary Reilly and David Smith. They had no less than three flowergirls and two pageboys – Vicki Mallon who is the bride and groom’s daughter, Rhea Hynes, Megan Murray, Sean Hynes and Leigh Hanratty. Paul Curtis weds Pamela McHugh Pamela McHugh from Blackbush married the love of her life, Ardee man Paul Curtis on December 28th last year. It was a picturesque day with the snow having just lifted and a touch of frost still visible on the trees. The couple’s civil ceremony and reception were both held in Darver Castle, and Pamela – who wore a gown by Edel Tuite – was full of praise for Julia and Trevor of Darver Castle, whose service was ‘second to none’. The bride and groom had six witnesses on the day, Pamela’s sister Patricia, daughter Anna and son Eoin and Paul’s brother Brendan, daughter Caoimhe and son Jamie. After the ceremony and during the meal guests were entertained by Tropical Storm – a three-piece band from the Philippines. They could sing any song that was thrown at them, and not even the requests for Christy Moore hits could stop them. The happy couple enjoyed an unforgettable honeymoon in Rome. Oliver Rickard weds Eimear Hallinan When Oliver Rickard from Bellewstown robbed a chip off Eimear Hallinan from Beamore Road after a night out, who would have thought that six-and-a-half years later they would be exchanging wedding vows! Well, that was the case on Friday, December 30th in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Drogheda when they became husband and wife. Eimear’s two bridesmaids were Jackie Tinley and Mairead Greene and to accompany them were bestman Richard Tinley and groomsman Sean Rothwell. The rain and wind on the day couldn’t be helped but that didn’t spoil the happy couple’s celebrations. They enjoyed a reception in the Ballymascanlon Hotel where Dundalk band, The Merry Macs, kept everyone on their feet for the night. s e n i h c a M The Dream Supercars ready to rev up the ALMC Motorshow at City North Hotel By Carmel Riggs
A
ll roads are leading to the City North Hotel this month when the ALMC Motorshow takes centre stage. It will be a licence to thrill for thousands of car enthusiasts as they get up close and personal with some of the world’s fastest supercars. BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus… just some of the big name cars promised to rev up the show which takes place on Sunday, May 9th. More than 200 supercars from the 50s, 60s and 70s will be showcased on the day alongside modern day classics from the world of rallying and high performance. There will also be children’s entertainment to keep the younger members of the family happy!

This is the second year of the show, organized by members of the ALMC Motor Club from Dublin, Fingal, Meath, Louth and while entry to the exhibition is free, all proceeds from the raffle and any donations on the day will go to the Jack & Jill Foundation. The children’s charity provides home 34

nursing care and respite to the families of 300 children nationwide who are born with or develop brain damage and who suffer from severe intellectual and physical developmental delay as a result. ALMC club member Joe Butler will forever be indebted to the Jack & Jill Foundation after his newborn child, Ellen, was diagnosed with Edward Syndrome, a rare chromosome disorder. ‘She didn’t look great straight away,’ said Joe. ‘Shortly after the birth Ellen was diagnosed with Edward Syndrome – it was just one of those random things. ‘We took Ellen home after two weeks and she stayed for four weeks. Only for Jack & Jill I don’t know how my wife Geraldine and I would have got through it as we had our other children to care for also. For two or three nights a week a nurse would arrive at 10pm and leave at 8am the following morning. ‘When one of the other members suggested we hold the Motorshow in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation I really appreciated the gesture. ‘We held our first show last year – and it went way beyond our expectations. We got lucky with the weather and, in hindsight, word got round a lot more than we had thought! It was a brilliant day and we’re hoping for an even better show this year.’ Making a return visit this year is the supercharged Ariel Atom, with 300bhp and weighing only 500kg it is one of the world’s fastest accelerating cars, capable of getting from zero to 100mph and stopping again all
inside 10 seconds. Other highlights to look out for include a Porsche 997 GT3 RS – ‘the most focused and racetrack-oriented street legal car that Porsche manufacture’ – and a Honda NSX. ‘This is a Honda supercar from the 90s,’ added Joe. ‘Chassis development was with consultation from Ayrton Senna and to this day is considered one of the best handling sports cars ever. This car has been modified to closely resemble the limited edition NSX-R specification. ‘We will also have kit-cars and modified cars, including a 1963 Morris Minor Traveller fitted with a 3.5L V8 engine.’ For motorbike enthusiasts, a Neil Hodgson’s 2010 Yamaha R1 British superbike, built by Rob McElnea to factory specification will be on display. Built with traction control and onboard Gyroscope, the bike develops a max power output of 218bhp and is still in its full superbike livery. This will be displayed alongside one of the late Martin Finnegan’s bikes. The ALMC Motorshow kicks off at 11.30am until 5pm on Sunday, May 9th. Borzalino’s in Mell has recently been voted Louth’s Best Customer Service Restaurant. Here head chef Luca Palombo dishes up Italian cuisine to suit any occasion

t’s 12 years since Filomena and Dominic Borza opened the doors to Borzalino Restaurant in Mell. The pair – who also own Dominic’s Takeaway on George’s Street and Elisa’s Restaurant in Ardee – have seen many changes through the years but the one thing that has remained constant is their support from locals. A family-run business, the restaurant is renowned for its fine Italian and European food, especially head chef Luca Palombo’s ‘speciality’ dishes. ‘We are constantly striving to add a variety of new dishes to our menu,’ says Filomena. ‘Luca has been with us from
the beginning, having trained and worked in Italy before relocating to Drogheda. He does specials quite a lot and each time they always go down a treat with customers.’ Borzalino’s recently scooped the title of Best Customer Service Restaurant in Louth and is now relying on locals’ support to go through to the Regional Finals of the Irish Restaurants Awards 2010 which will be held on June 9th in the Burlington Hotel. All you have to do is text ‘Customer 425’ to 53306 to show your support. The restaurant holds a full wine license and also carries a range of bottle beers and ciders. Seafood Salad (Serves 4)
Ingredients 1 large squid 1 medium sized octopus 300g mussels 150g shrimp 4 tiger prawns 1 cuttlefish 2 fresh tomatoes 2 pieces of celery stems Chopped fresh parsley Extra virgin olive oil 1 fresh lemon A pinch of salt Method 1. Wash and clean out all of the fish. 2. Bring cuttlefish, squid and octopus all to the boil in separate pots until al dente. 3. Steam the tiger prawns and shrimps for 3 minutes. Once the prawns and shrimp are cooked, remove the shell. 4. Sauté the mussels in olive oil. 38

5. Slice the cuttlefish, squid and octopus and place all of the fish into a bowl. 6. Wash the tomatoes and celery stems before removing the tomato seeds. Slice the tomatoes and celery very thinly. 7. Mix the tomato and celery stems with the fish. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the salad. Season with parsley, salt and olive oil. Mix well.
Mushroom Ravioli with Truffle Sauce (Serves 4)
The filling Ingredients 100g of fresh ricotta 100g mushrooms 1 clove of garlic Parsley 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil Handful of parmesan cheese Salt and pepper Method 1. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Cook them with the chopped garlic and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Once the mushrooms are cooked leave to cool. When they have cooled down, mix them with the ricotta and parmesan cheese. 3. Roll out the dough as thinly as possible and cut out circles of about 8cm in diameter. 4. Spoon the mushroom filling in the centre of each circle, fold in half and shape into half moons.
Truffle Sauce Ingredients 20g butter 1 shallot 100g minced veal 1 small black truffle 250ml fresh cream Salt and pepper to taste Method 1. Braise the butter and chopped shallot in a large pan on a moderate heat. 2. Add the minced meat and cook for 2 minutes. 3. Add the cream and grate half of the truffle in the sauce and stir slowly. 4. Season with salt and pepper. To serve: Cook the ravioli in salted water with a little olive oil for 2 minutes. Drain the ravioli and mix in the sauce. Serve on a plate with the remaining half truffle grated on top.

Ingredients 12g ground gelatine 100 ml milk 125g sugar
500ml cream 500g raspberries, blueberries, strawberries or red currants
Method: 1. Soak the gelatine in cold water. Bring the milk to boil with the sugar and then stir in the soaked gelatine. Add the cream and slowly whip with a whisk. 2. Pour the panna cotta mixture into oven proof dishes and refrigerate for 12 hours. 3. Carefully turn the chilled panna cotta out of the dishes. Wash the berries. 4. Place the panna cotta in the centre of the plate and surround with the berries. Serve with a strawberry sauce if desired.

Describe your day-to-day role. I’ve been Director of Drogheda Homeless Aid for nearly 10 years, and literally every single day has been different since I started! We have 22 residents in our hostel, and 140 resettled residents that we link in with regularly and they all have so many different reasons for being homeless, so I spend quite a lot of time co-ordinating services and care plans for our clients. For the last few years I have also spent a lot of time pleading with Government departments to fund us, and organising fundraising activities to keep us going.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job? When residents feel that they are ready to move out of our hostel into their own home. There are so many hurdles to overcome for somebody to be ready to resettle; it’s very rewarding to witness all the steps that clients go through on the way.

The most valuable lesson you have learned over the years? To never judge a book by its cover! times, I have found that I have great admiration for all of our local business people, who are struggling against the odds because of our economic climate, but who remain motivated.
Has the current economic climate changed your spending habits? Well, in the last year or so I haven’t maxed as many credit cards as I usually would! There’s a much greater emphasis on value for money now; we’re not paying way over the odds for everything anymore. If you could change anything in Drogheda, what would it be? The violence on the streets. The town is definitely a more dangerous place than it used to be, especially at night time. The solution isn’t simple though, and you would wonder where we should start! At the very least we need a legislative response to knife crime, we need for the Government to provide more adequate budgets for policing our streets, and we need a judicial system that’s responsive to the experiences of victims.

Gallery & Droichead Arts Centre This afternoon of culture for the elderly begins with an early lunch at 12noon in Andersons Cafe, Highlanes Gallery, where they will offer a special lunch menu of soup, sandwich and tea/coffee for €11.95. At 1pm, a special guided tour of the gallery will take place including the exhibition The Marienbad Palace and a selection of work from the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection. From here you will be led over to the second part of The Marienbad Palace exhibition at Droichead Arts Centre on Stockwell Street. This will be followed by an afternoon cup of tea or coffee before settling down to watch the film Dean Spanley at 2pm. Admission is free

Drogheda Arts Festival presents: The Marienbad Palace, MondaySaturday 10am-5pm, Highlanes Gallery & Droichead Arts Centre. An exhibition of work curated by Jacqui McIntosh, The Marienbad Palace brings together works by Laura Buckley, Diana Copperwhite, Jorge De La Garza, Alicja Kwade, Haroon Mirza and Ian Monroe. The works shown within the exhibition explore ideas of reality beyond our everyday experiences of space and time. In The Marienbad Palace, time stretches and is without duration, space is multidimensional, the distinction between subjective and objective reality blurred. The exhibition, which includes collage, painting, sculpture, installation and video, takes its title from JG Ballard’s 1989 short story ‘The Enormous Space’ and Alain Resnais’ seminal 1961 film ‘Last Year in Marienbad’. 42
