Essential Drogheda
editor’s letter I
t’s been an exciting month here in Essential with the launch of our website, www.essentialdrogheda. com. Now you can read the north-east’s FREE magazine online, not to mention check out all our fabulous back issues! We hope you like the website as much as we do – and don’t forget to spread the word… I’m delighted to welcome local motoring journalist Paddy Comyn of completecar.ie to the ‘E’ team – and this month he looks at five cars to consider if you plan to trade-in your old car for a new one before the Government’s Scrappage Scheme deal expires in December (see page 38). On pages 18 & 19, Drogheda stylist Karl Smith finds neutral ground in the d Hotel for an exclusive fashion shoot incorporating this season’s nude trend. One thing’s for sure you won’t fade into the background if you follow Karl’s lead… Don’t miss E’s interviews with Belfast comedian Colin Murphy (see page 12), local accountant and business advisor Gail McEvoy (see page 42) and Calipo Artistic Director Darren Thornton (see page 54). Enjoy your read!

Spreading the word... Big Band Dance Night
Halloween at Funtasia Drogheda’s Funtasia Waterpark will be providing a frightfully good time this Halloween. By day the Waterpark will be haunted by family friendly ghosts – and children are invited to get groovy with Granny Ghostley and her phantoms as they throw a Halloween party from 2pm - 5.30pm! It is at night however when things will turn really scary as the screams emerge from the Tunnel of Terror from 7.30pm - 11pm. Funtasia say this four dimensional experience which takes place from Oct 22nd - 31st, has ‘an extreme fear factor’ and only the bravest should enter!
Drogs for Dogs! Drogheda Animal Rescue is holding a fundraiser in McHughs on Friday, October 8th for what promises to be a great night of live music. The exciting line-up includes bands Red Queen Contest and MGB (formerly Machine Gun Baby), supported by Joseph Kearns on guitar. Both bands offer an audacious brand of melodic rock and both are clocking up great mileage on the live circuit, including an appearance at Oxygen this year. Doors open 9pm, admission €10.
A Big Band Dance Night in aid of the Post Polio Support Group Louth /Meath Area will take place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk on Friday, November 5th. It promises to be a great night’s entertainment with The Davitt Showband, a six-piece family band, playing the best in Country and Irish. Any support would be gratefully appreciated for this worthy cause.
Superstars of Wrestling It promises to be the event of the year when the Superstars of Wrestling roll into town on Wednesday, October 13th on their American Invasion Tour. The T LT will be transformed into an exciting fighting arena for the occasion with wrestlers such as The Avalanche (formerly known as P.N. Neus in WCW) and ‘Mr USA’ Brody Steele already confirmed to appear. Tickets €20, www.thetlt.ie
The price is right! How organised are you? Let’s be honest most of us are at best mildly organised and at worst a disaster at forward planning! Well, this autumn/winter season at the Droichead Arts Centre, being organised is going to reap rewards! A broader pricing policy sees Droichead offering significant savings for advance booking and also a new pocket friendly pricing policy for unemployed, OAPs, students and family tickets. By making an early ticket purchase for the event of your choice, you will receive up to 15% discount on tickets for shows, the reverse side of this is that last minute decisions will incur a surcharge! For more information visit www. droichead.com or tel: 0419833946.
Cook up a storm It seems Rachel Allen has some stiff competition in this neck of the woods! Michelin-trained chef Rachel Hegarty runs a bespoke cookery school in Cookstown Kitchen, Ardee, Co. Neutral ground
Drogheda stylist Karl Smith pairs nude pieces with darker colours to create an autumn look with a difference
f you had doubts about succumbing to the ’nude’ trend this past spring/summer then you’re in luck! This neutral trend has carried on into autumn/winter, but with a twist that will make it far more accessible, not to mention easier to keep clean! Instead of a head-to-toe nude look, why not try pairing individual pieces in cream, tope, caramel or peach with a darker colour, and you will have
an outfit that won’t make you fade into the background. Teamed with black, brown or grey... they all add up to a chic seasonal look that’s guaranteed to turn heads, leaving you feeling anything but beige! Don’t be afraid to try out a range of fabrics like cotton, satin, wool or even lace. This trend works perfectly for all occasions; work-wear, casual and evening. Chic, without the dry-cleaning bill!

Ones to watch... The Cake Designer Aoife Collins opened the doors to Cake Couture on West Street on August 6th. Besides creating delicious cakes that are handmade to order she also runs Sugar Craft courses for both adults and children. Visit www.cakecouture.ie for more information or call 0419810769.
“
Essential takes a closer look at local talent who are making their mark – Cake Couture Our courses are booked out for Christmas and we’re now taking bookings for January. I suppose up until now there hasn’t been an opportunity for people to learn Sugar Craft skills. The courses are over six weeks and designed to be great fun; we don’t take ourselves too seriously! The children’s classes are going down a treat too. We hold separate boys and girls classes with the girls following a princess theme and the boys a planet theme. We’ve also started a Cake Club which takes place upstairs on the first Tuesday of every month and it’s a great opportunity for cake lovers to come along and share baking ideas and recipes.
Before I opened the shop I taught cake decoration classes in the Barbican. It was a fantastic venue but I was limited in what I could bring to show people so I was really fortunate when I found this place. My aim is to get a buzz going around cakes. All of our cakes are made to order so we will sit down and design from scratch a cake to suit the person buying it. What has amazed me most since starting this business is the amount of people out there who are good at baking but just don’t have the confidence to ice their cake. That’s why I have started the Sugar Craft courses and I’ve been overwhelmed by the response.

your age
erhaps the single, most useful advice for women in their late 40s, early 50s is to remember that it’s not about looking younger it’s about looking beautiful at your own age. Next time you decide on a make-over, consider just what you want and what you’re starting with. First of all, review your look and think about the changes that have happened in the past few years. Make a mental note of the things you want to work on. If you feel that you’ve had the same look for the last 10 years, is it time to change now? Follow these steps to growing old gracefully...

My Nails have become very brittle of late and I have noticed fine ridges starting to appear on them. How would I solve this problem? Samantha, Drogheda You should be applying a nail strengthener once a week. Also it’s important to buff and file your nails before polishing. Regular manicures and treatments will also help alleviate this problem as they will help to hydrate and strengthen the nail plate.

n this issue I want to show you how to manage content using Wordpress. I also want to give you a few tips about marketing your website because unfortunately the days of ‘build it and they will come’ have long gone – if they ever existed! There are lots of different types of website you can choose to run, from e-commerce sites to discussion forums and Blogs to stand-alone pages. For simplicity, I’m going to cover the last two because Wordpress can take care of these ‘out of the box’. It’s worth mentioning that you can add e-commerce, forums and much more to Wordpress at any stage – just ask your local web designer! The first thing I’ll cover is ‘the Blog’. A Blog is just a series of regular articles – the word comes from a blend of ‘web’ and ‘log’. In even simpler terms, a Blog is just another word for a ‘diary’ and every time you create a new ‘entry’ it appears at the top of your homepage. Okay, so go ahead and login to your Wordpress control panel (see last month’s article or visit 100paces.com/essentialdrogheda). In the left of your browser’s window there’s a button called ‘Posts’. Click on it and a sub-menu will appear. At the same time any existing posts will be listed in the centre of the page. If you’ve just installed Wordpress you’ll see a sample article called ‘Hello World’. You can delete this if you like. Back in the left column, click on ‘New Post’. When the page loads you’ll see an input box for the title of your article, go ahead and type something. B e l o w the title is a series of small icons and below them a large white box. The large white box is where you add the main text for your article. The small icons

Click on Static Page and choose the page you want to Whether you choose display from the drop down menu – you’ll to ‘Blog’ or not, web need to have already created the page first! designer Jonathan Finally, a little advice about marketing Callan shows how to your new website... From a lot of personal add content to your experience it’s not enough to build it and hope people will find you – after all there’s homepage around 105 million (active) websites out there allow you to format what you right now! The first thing I recommend you type. For example, if you highlight some text do is identify your audience. Then put yourself and click the first icon (‘B’) it makes the text in their shoes and ask: ‘Why would I want to bold. Roll your mouse over each icon and after visit this site?’ Next, create some great content 1-2 seconds a pop-up will appear telling you for them. Finally, you need to go to your what it does. Once you’ve added your content audience and tell them how great your site is click the ‘Preview’ button at the top right of and why they should visit it. This doesn’t have the page (a new window will open). If you like to be on Facebook, Twitter or any of the other what you see go back to Wordpress and click ‘of the moment’ websites. You could use radio, ‘Publish’. Now your homepage will display newspaper adverts, leaflets – just remember, each Blog post one after the other – the most go to where ever your audience is. recent being placed at the top. For a step-by-step tutorial visit www.100paces. The second type of content in Wordpress com/essential-drogheda is called a ‘static page’. The main difference is that Blog posts are displayed one after the other, typically on the homepage. Static pages are stand alone and quite often local website design & development accessed via navigation tabs along the top or side of the site – just like any typical website. Office² or ‘Office Squared’ is an office app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that lets you create and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets in .doc and .xls formats. Office² also allows you to integrate with Google Docs, Dropbox and MobileMe iDisk too, which means that you can now access your important documents at all times, letting you edit documents and spreadsheets from within the app. You can also access, move, and delete documents stored on any of the WWW clouds. Overall, it is a quite a good application if you need your documents on the go. Cost: €4.99, compatible with iPod Touch, iPhone & iPad
Hipstamatic brings a real retro analog feel to a fairly average digital camera. Like a real camera, Hipstamatic has a front and a back. You take photos while looking at the back, through a virtual viewfinder. Little red and green lights show up while your image is saved and developed in the background. Lenses, flashes and films can be changed right inside the application with the swipe of a finger. It’s all really well done. Hipstamatic does a great job of returning some of the magic to photography – the idea that you simply won’t know what picture you took until it has developed and printed. Ford Fiesta
The biggest-selling car under the Scrappage Scheme so far this year, the Fiesta with excellent is also the best supermini on the market too. Fiesta blends great, fun styling Style version, with build quality and a great chassis. The big seller in Ireland is the 1.25-litre 82hp and 114Nm of torque and this is also reasonably wellequipped too. You get €3,845 in total off the price of the Fiesta under the Scrappage Scheme and that is really good value so you can get a new Ford Fiesta from €11,995 which includes: smart alloy wheels and front fogs, as well as interior features such as five airbags, central locking, electric front windows and iPod connectivity.
Renault Fluence
Renault have been seriously aggressive with their assault on the Irish market in 2010 and their scrappage discounts are so generous that they have seen their sales figures soar this year. No other brand offers as much off their cars under the scheme as the French brand and they also offer similar discounts to owners of cars that are eight years or older too. The Fluence is probably the best value car available from Renault. It is a generously-sized family saloon, that is inexpensive to run. The 86hp 1.5-litre dCi 86 Royale has a retail price of €20,300 but you will get €4,500 off this if you trade-in a 10-year-old car, so it costs just €15,800. This means you are getting a proper-sized car, with a great diesel engine for the price of a supermini. We spent a week in one recently and were seriously impressed.
Scrappage bargains by
T
he Government’s Scrappage Scheme has been hailed as a big success, but time is running out on the deal, which ends on December 31st. Paddy Comyn from CompleteCar.ie looks at five cars to consider if you plan to trade-in your old car for a
shiny new one before the deal expires. The deal allows for owners of cars that are 10-years or older to get €1,500 off the price of a new car. In many cases this offer is matched or exceeded by the manufacturer.
Hyundai i10
Peugeot 5008
Our star of the Scrappage Scheme when it comes to people carriers goes to the Peugeot 5008, which for us is the best people carrier you can buy now. Early tests against some of its key rivals have shown it is a superb vehicle and its clean 1.6-litre HDi diesel had emissions of 140g/km, right on the threshold of scrappage. This means you can claim €1,500 off the price of the €26,870 price tag for the 5008 SE. 38
E Drogheda
Hyundai have adopted an aggressive pricing approach to the Scrappage Scheme. The Hyundai i10, a five-door model, stands out among city cars. The 1.2litre, 78bhp i10 is a good little car and comes with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. Hyundai will add a further €2,000 to the Government’s €1,500 discount, so the i10 starts at €8,495. This is a spacious and comfortable five-door car and represents incredible value at this price.
Renault Clio
A second Renault in the list, and one of the cheapest cars to buy und er the Scrappage Scheme, the Clio can be bou ght for just €8,990 as there is €4,000 off the price of a new one under the scrappage sche me. The best value is from the 1.2-litre 16v version which, incidentally can run on E85 Bioe thanol, a fuel which is available from Maxol on the Ballymakenny Road in Drogheda. The Clio has 75hp, which isn’t bad, and with emi ssions of 139g/km it sits in tax band B. The Clio is a charming little car, not quite as solid as something like a Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Polo but a great buy.

Behind
The Wheel
Make: Ford Escort Mark 2 Engine: 1300 How long do you have it? I got it when I was 16 as I’m big into motor sport. I’ve raced in the Porsche Open Racing Series in Mondello and Kirkistown and in 2008 and 2009 I won the Class Three Championship. I didn’t enter this year as I was sitting the Leaving Cert and I felt it was pointless going out for a third time to try and win it!
What was your first car? The Ford Escort Mark 2! It’s parked at the moment though as I’ve started racing a Dunlop Supercar. It’s my dad’s car – my dad has been at motorsports since he was 18 so I guess it’s in the blood! There’s a new Class starting, the GT Endurance Championship on October 10th and my dad and I are racing in it; we’re going to double drive the car. Best car you ever drove? Porsche 993 Cup Car – it’s a racing car and is the fastest car that I’ve ever driven. What’s your dream drive? Ford Focus RF, the new model. Fords have always been my passion and ever since the Ford Sierra Cosworth RF500 came out there’s been no
other car to match it.
Favourite rally driver of all time? It’s between Colm McRae and Jason Plato. McRae was a Scottish driver who died about three years ago in a helicopter crash. He is probably the greatest rally driver of all time and I’ve always admired his flamboyancy behind the wheel of a car and his commitment. Favourite race track? Brands Hatch in England. My dad raced there two years ago and I got to sit in the car with my dad while he drove around the track – it was brilliant! Who is your insurer? Breeden Insurance, they’re the only ones who would give me a quote in a Mark 2! No one else would accommodate me! What’s on your CD player? Nothing! There’s no radio in the car as it takes up too much space!
with 18-year-old Richard O’Mahony from Bettystown Who would be your dream passenger? Anybody except my dad! He feels he knows how to drive better than me so there’s always that bit of arguing between us in the car! Do you use a Sat Nav? Yeah my brain! How do you find driving in Drogheda? You have to be very patient as you never know who is going to run out across the road. , with Peter Tormey an ici hn tec a computer now from Drogheda who n. llo lives in Co
What was your first bike and when did you start riding? I started in a field when I was about eight or nine on my cousin’s bike. Then in 1986 I got a Suzuki GP 100 when I was 16, it was my first legal road bike. I thought I was so cool, I was wrong! What bike do you currently have and how long have you had it? I have a Honda VFR750 and I have it now about four years. It’s the best bike ever made. What bikes would be in your fantasy garage? I would have a Ducati Desmosedici but at €64,000 it can stay a fantasy! The VFR would still be there though. What protective gear do you wear? An Arai helmet, Alpinestars leathers and gloves and Sidi boots. What type of motorcycle racing do you prefer? It has to be Moto GP. When you see a bike’s frame completely made out of carbon fibre and the development that goes into the bikes and teams, it’s a level above anything else. What is your favourite race meet? Skerries – it’s
the first one I ever went to and I have great memories of the paddock and the smell of the bikes. You always remember your first. Who is your favourite racer of all time? Joey Dunlop, that man was a legend. To achieve what he did is amazing. If you could choose one motorcycle racer to spend a day with who would it be? Valentino Rossi. I think he is nuts and it would be a laugh. What habits of other road users do find most annoying/dangerous? Roundabouts, people don’t know how to use them. Also, when a bike filters through traffic and a car driver sees you coming and pulls out so you can’t get past just because they’re stuck in traffic. Rant over! Would you have any suggestions for the RSA to improve safety for bikers? Compulsory rider training before a person gets his or her provisional licence. You can get on a bike and not know about the lifesaver or taking the proper line into bends. The theory test doesn’t prepare you for actually being on the road.

Autumn
THE WORLD WINE TOUR
Head Chef Gareth Skelton of Howard’s Restaurant in the Bettystown Court Hotel serves up a dinner party menu that will never go out of season
by Seamus Daly from Quintessential Wines La Belle France What is it about French wine that divides people’s opinions so much? In terms of wine France is the Holy Grail to some people while to others it is the last place they would buy from. Who is right? Neither. France does produce some world class wines but so do other countries and I believe people who dismiss France have just not tried the right wines. Let’s look at some of the better known wine regions of France and explore it through the grape varieties grown there and style of wines produced. Let’s begin our journey in Paris and then travel 100 miles east to the Champagne area. This cold region is really too far north to get grapes ripe enough to produce still wine. So it was indeed a happy accident when a monk (Dom Perignon) discovered that by allowing the wine re-ferment in the bottle it produced a wine of much better quality which just happened to have bubbles in it. Champagne is more expensive than other sparkling wines mainly because of the production process (blending wines from different years and long aging in the bottle). My top tip would be to avoid big brands and instead taste real champagne by drinking what I refer to as ‘farmer fizz’ – champagne made by a producer who only uses the best quality grapes he grows himself. Heading 100 miles south we pass through the town of Chablis. All Chablis is 100 per cent Chardonnay, usually unoaked, and grown in soil composed of fossilized oyster shells from millions of years ago which lend a very special character to the wines. Dry, crisp and minerally whites which are great with seafood. Further south between the cities of Dijon and Lyon is the Burgundy region. Here, Chardonnay (White) and Pinot Noir (Red) are the main grapes. Burgundy wines are generally aged in wood and are among the aristocracy of French wines. These wines are made to be consumed with food and may be aged for a number of years. Next month we continue our wine tour of France. If you would like to learn (and taste) a bit more, in a relaxed, fun environment, with a qualified instructor then contact us about our five-week Introductory Wine Course. 041 9830960 or sales@quintessentialwines.ie

he first day of January may mean new beginnings, but autumn offers its own fresh start. The casserole pots come out as do the simmering pans of bones for stocks and soup, and Autumn fruit and vegetables start appearing from the end of Summer. For Gareth Skelton, head chef at the four-star Bettystown Court Hotel which is also home to Howard’s Restaurant, when the weather turns chilly it’s time to embrace the
fresh seasonal produce on our doorstep. Having worked in some of Ireland’s top hotels and winning many awards along the way, Gareth has enjoyed a career spanning over 14 years. Here, he serves up a menu which is a typical example of the wholesome Irish food served at Howards. Open seven days a week, from 6pm until 9pm, it’s easy to understand why it’s become so popular with locals and visitors alike!

Set in a pole dancing class, the five very different women struggle hilariously to conquer the new fitness craze for an event to raise awareness and money for a breast cancer charity. What the Folk? by Siamse Tire Theatre, October 5th-7th, 6.30pm and 8.30pm, An Grianan, Termonfeckin There’s a little bit of Kerry coming to An Grianan, Termonfeckin, where four lively members of Siamsa Tire, the National Folk Theatre in Tralee, will take up residence, literally in Louth’s best kept secret! They welcome us into their temporary home, offer us tea and cake and we all sit down for a chat. We prefer singing and dancing to talking, they say, as they bust into razor sharp harmonies, indulge in impromptu knees-up and give us a very funny and informative demonstration of the difference between folk and competitive dancing, all the while sharing stories about the pleasures and pains of belonging to the extended Siamsa family. This is a warm and charming piece, you also feel like you’re visiting a family down the country and getting up to speed with their lives. It is advised to book early as places are limited. Tickets €14, www.droichead.com

All music heard is performed live except for Joe’s vocals. It is set to be a poignant, inspiring and uplifting event that will honour the life and success- laden times of the Mullingar international superstar. Tickets €30, www.thetlt.ie

Bruiser Theatre Company presents ‘LOW PAY? DON’T PAY!’ by Dario FO, Saturday, October 23rd, 8.30pm, Droichead Arts Centre An uproarious brand new 2010 version, by Dario Fo himself, of his frenetic 1974 farce, ‘Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay’. Housewives, Antonia and Margherita, fed up with high prices in the supermarket, take matters into their own hands and start shoplifting. Keen to keep their light-fingered antics from their husbands, Giovanni and Luigi – not to mention the Police – the women are forced to resort to more and more inventive hiding places and more and more elaborate cover stories, in this new version of the legendary comedy. Tickets €18 (adv. booking), €22 (on the night), Oap/students €16, 20 tickets @ €5 unemployed, group of 4 €60. www.droichead.com

The Secret Garden by Moonfish Theatre Company,
Until the End - Magnhild Opdøl, Wednesday, October 13th -Saturday, November 20th, Droichead Arts Centre This solo exhibition by Norwegian born, Dublin based artist Magnhild Opdøl won’t disappoint. The main body of her recent work is an investigation into the nature of death. Everything has its time, after death all that remains is documentation or the memory of the person, the place or object. In the past year the work has dealt with the idea of the end as the beginning, giving a new lineage to the images and objects that are created, where the past stops a new story begins. Entry is free.
October 20th, 10am & 11.45am This production is adapted from the classic children’s book by Frances Hodgson Burnett about orphan Mary Lennox. It weaves a thrilling, magical tale of hope and wonder that draws its audience into the mysterious world of hidden places, where anything is possible. Tickets €6, suitable for age 7+ years. www.droichead.com

interview
The Best of
Everything
with Darren Thornton Artistic Director of Calipo Theatre Company, Drogheda Best theatre: I saw the original production of ‘Disco Pigs’ with Cillian Murphy and Eileen Walsh in Project in Dublin about 15 years ago and that was pretty incredible. Best actor: It’s impossible to name one, but I’m really excited about a British actor named Andrew Garfield at the minute; he was amazing in ‘Boy A’. He’s about to become a massive star as it was announced recently that he’s the new Spiderman. Best thing about your latest production, 10 Dates With Mad Mary: Yasmine Akram’s sharp writing and Caoilfhionn Dunne’s superb performance. Best drama/film you’ve ever written: I’m still working on it! Best advice you ever received: Cast well and never compromise (from Neil Jordan no less!). Best age: Twenty-five... 26 was the hangover! Best hobby: Cinema with friends
and family, I love the communal experience of watching films with a big group of people. Best gift: The DVD box set of The Wire. Seminal! Best childhood memory: Going to Funderland every Christmas. Best book: Perfume by Patrick Suskind. It’s a suspense novel in which Suskind tells the horrific story of Jean Baptiste Grenouille, an orphan born in Paris in 1738. Best thing on my iPod: It changes all the time, right now I’m listening to the new Chemical Brothers album, Further, constantly.
Best grooming product: Um.. a hairbrush? Best holiday destination: Barcelona – it’s a brilliant city to visit. Best achievement: We run an Outreach project called ‘Sharp Focus’ with Calipo where we produce short films with teenagers who’ve never worked in film before; I’m always quite proud when the teenagers get to watch their movies with an audience on the night of the premiere. Best thing about living in Drogheda: I love the history of the town, its strength, and the way it has survived tough times down through the ages. It’s also a great place to work because people are always supportive and enthusiastic; they go out of their way to help in whatever way they can, and that’s rare. A scene from 10 Dates with Mad Mary
Best film: The Apartment and The Graduate would be up there in my top five. Best night out: Clarkes and then Fusion, old Fusion for those in the know! Best drink: Mojito. Best snack: A pizza from Bella Atina which has just recently relocated to Shop St I’m told.
10 Dates with Mad Mary by Yasmine Akram and directed by Darren Thornton, is currently touring Ireland. For full tour dates check out www.calipo.ie
