March 2022
arch is the beginning of the transition from the hot summer weather towards the cold season. Transitions in our environment are a helpful reminder that change can be expected in life and predictable at times. In this edition of Essential Grace Magazine, we focus on Bipolar Disorder, a condition that has a lot to do with change that might be overwhelming when we are uninformed. When managed properly, and with support the changes the condition brings are predictable. It is time to focus on informing ourselves so that there is necessary support to all those that are affected. We honour women’s month with a feature story of Yankho Danielle Dutchi, a winner of the first Miss Laowai pageant held in China. We remain proud of our ladies flying the flag across borders! I wish you an energising March with positive changes both inside and out! Julie Soko Managing Editor

Quick Facts About Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder affects every aspect of life: It may be difficult to fully comprehend the toll bipolar disorder can Quick Facts About Bipolar Disorder take on someone because it is an invisible illness. Bipolar disorder has many causes, from genetics to life events: After a study that spanned nearly two decades, a team from the University of Michigan found that there is no single genetic change, life event, or chemical brain imbalance that could be the root cause of bipolar disorder. Many times, it is a combination of several biological and environmental factors that can trigger bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder rarely exists alone: As if a mood disorder that involves long-spanning depressions and manic episodes wasn’t enough to deal with, bipolar disorder can also come with other physical and psychological conditions to worry about. These include metabolic disorders and migraines. Everyone’s bipolar disorder is different: Bipolar disorder is like fingerprints and snowflakes—no two people have the exact same symptoms and each diagnosis can vary greatly. However, there are two main types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I which is characterized by one or more manic episodes that last at least a week and require hospitalization; and bipolar II, which is characterized by more depressive episodes. There may be a creativity connection: Did you know that World Bipolar Day occurs on Vincent van Gogh’s birthday? Van Gogh, considered one of the most influential artists of all time, was posthumously diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. It is life-threatening, and support is vital: An estimated 1 in 5 people diagnosed with bipolar disorder dies by suicide. World Bipolar Day is an opportunity to show those living with the day-to-day challenges of this condition they are not alone, they have your support, and there is always hope. Living with bipolar disorder may not be easy, but as van Gogh himself once said: “The
beginning is perhaps more difficult than anything else, but keep heart, it will turn out all right.” By Shannon Hazlitt. https://mhnational.org 8|Es s en ti al Gr a ce Mag azi ne

Bipolar Disorder in the Spotlight Well Known Personalities Living Openly with Bipolar Disorder
Chris Brown R&B/pop singer Chris Brown was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in 2014 following a string of high-profile incidents that had the potential to end his career. Brown’s mental health issues were revealed during a court-ordered stay at a rehab facility where he was being treated.
Mariah Carey “I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the
stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone,” she said. “It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.” She was diagnosed with Bipolar II in 2001. The Belgian kickboxer Jean-Claude Van Damme has appeared in numerous action films. While his movie career took off, Van Damme's personal life was unraveling. He divorced four times, was charged with spousal abuse, and was addicted to cocaine. He was diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar disorder.
Kanye West was 39 when he was diagnosed, and has been outspoken about the attitude of the public and press about mental health. He is known to speak out about his own experience with the condition, one of his most famous phrases being ‘I hate bipolar. It’s awesome!’

The researchers reviewed current evidence to illustrate the prevalence and health burden of bipolar disorder, the typical progression of illness, evidence for a range of interventions and the content of international guidelines. Calling for clearer treatment guidelines and targeted care within existing services, they describe how people experiencing first episode mania have been overlooked by health services,

People with bipolar disorder are 50 times more likely to self-harm compared to the general population, and at least 12 times more likely to take their own lives (higher than the rate for people with schizophrenia). The World Health Organization's Global Burden of Disease ranked bipolar disorder as the fourth leading cause of overall disease burden in people aged 10 to 24. Analyses suggest that almost 50 per cent of people present with symptoms before the age of 21, and a recent review of 27 studies suggested an average delay of almost six years between first symptoms of bipolar disorder and targeted treatment.
