GEORGETOWN TODAY Today Georgetown is a bustling neighborhood with a vibrant business district, an active residential community, and a popular recreational waterfront. It’s DC’s playground for shopping, dining, history, fitness, and family fun!
Photo Credit: Sam Kittner for the Georgetown BID
M Street / Wisconsin Avenue
M Street is Georgetown’s main street, connecting the neighborhood to Foggy Bottom and Downtown DC to the east and Virginia via Key Bridge to the west. It is also recognized as one of the best shopping streets in the country. The intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue is the heart of Georgetown, with shop-lined streets extending in all four directions.
Book Hill
Canal & Waterfront District
South of M Street are two bodies of water, the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. Between those bodies of water are nooks and crannies to explore. Along the side streets you’ll find cafes and restaurants, recreational opportunities, architectural gems, and remnants of the neighborhood’s industrial history. Don’t miss Georgetown Waterfront Park for views of the Potomac River, and Washington Harbour which boasts 10 restaurants and eateries and, in the winter, the area’s largest outdoor ice skating rink.

GEORGETOWN HISTORY
Photo Credit: Sam Kittner for the Georgetown BID
BEFORE THERE WAS WASHINGTON, THERE WAS GEORGETOWN Once a tobacco port town of Maryland, Georgetown predates the nation’s capital by 40 years. You can discover that history at sites such as the Old Stone House, one of the oldest known remaining structures in Washington, DC, built in 1765. Now a National Park, the Old Stone House commemorates the daily lives of Georgetown’s early residents. History beckons at every turn in Georgetown. The C&O Canal is a National Historical Park with miles of hiking and biking trails. Along the canal and south toward the Potomac River you’ll see artifacts of Georgetown’s early industrial history.
Take a Tour
Georgetown’s history is part of what makes it so special; discover more on a walking tour of the neighborhood. Follow The African American Heritage Trail to see the churches and residences that were at the heart of Georgetown’s African American community in the 19th and 20th centuries. Or trace the path of those most iconic Georgetown residents, the Kennedys, to see where they lived, worshipped, worked and played. In addition to guided tours of beautiful Georgetown estates and gardens, scenic tours of the area are available daily, as are a variety of guided walking tours. Visit our website to learn more: georgetowndc.com/tour
Further north in Georgetown’s residential area are historic house museums that tell the stories of Georgetown’s early prominent residents. And all along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, shops, restaurants, and offices bring modern life into the neighborhood’s historic rowhouses. The City Tavern Club on M Street, now a private social club, once hosted guests including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and John Adams.

NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS
Photo Credit: Sam Kittner for the Georgetown BID
There is always something happening in Georgetown and many times, it’s free! The BID’s signature annual events, including the Georgetown French Market, Taste of Georgetown, and Georgetown GLOW, offer a fun and exciting way to experience the neighborhood. Additionally, Georgetown businesses often hold their own free events including trunk shows, gallery openings, and more. Check out the “Events” page on georgetowndc.com for further details.
Georgetown French Market
The ever-popular Georgetown French Market event brings over 7,500 attendees to the streets of Georgetown every April. Participating Book Hill merchants set up tables along Wisconsin Avenue from P Street to Reservoir Road with wares up to 75% off. Sale merchandise includes clothing, shoes, housewares, jewelry, furniture, and more. Live music, French fare, face painting, caricatures and more round out this popular annual event.
Sunset on the Waterfront
Evening is a great time to hang out in Georgetown Waterfront Park. Check out two free summer event series: Sunset Fitness in the Park is a series of outdoor fitness classes, running June-August. Georgetown Sunset Cinema is a movie series in July and August. Grab a picnic and a blanket and view films with the panoramic backdrop of the sunset, Potomac River and Key Bridge. Taste of Georgetown
An annual celebration of food, wine, and music, the Taste of Georgetown has been one of Washington, DC’s premier neighborhood events for more than 20 years. The Taste features over 30 of Georgetown’s finest restaurants showcasing delectable dishes, as well as wine and craft beer pairings, music, and family-friendly activities. Held every October, the Taste of Georgetown attracts around 10,000 people, the proceeds of which benefit Georgetown Ministry Center’s homeless assistance services. FITNESS & RECREATION
Photo Credit: Sam Kittner for the Georgetown BID
Some of the region’s best trails converge in Georgetown. The C&O Canal Towpath and Capital Crescent Trails are popular among walkers, joggers, and cyclists heading west, and Rock Creek Park Trail travels north from the waterfront. The Potomac River is a paddler’s paradise – get on the water on a kayak, canoe, or on a stand-up paddleboard. The neighborhood is also home to over 20 fitness-related businesses including athletic stores, yoga studios, and boathouses along the Potomac River.
Picnic in the Park
Georgetown’s commercial district is home to four national parks that comprise 11 acres of parkland. Pack a lunch and set up a picnic in one of the many neighborhood parks, including Georgetown Waterfront Park, with its 10 acres of green space along the Potomac River. Other prime picnic spots include Montrose Park, Old Stone House’s courtyard, and Volta Park.
Waterfront F un
All year round, Georgetown’s beautiful waterfront is a center of neighborhood entertainment. Kids love running through the fountain at Georgetown Waterfront Park, and The Washington Harbour offers a calendar of events for people of all ages, including live music, a synchronized water fountain show, and an ice skating rink in the winter.
