ANTIQUES, ANYONE?

STAYING

COOL

We get it, Washington can be really cold in the winter. The multiple outdoor ice rinks are proof enough. But how’d you like to be so cool that you’re hot? Slide over to the Verizon Center to catch two of the coolest R&B musical acts entertain the nation’s capital. Jay-Z brings his Magna Carter World Tour to D.C. on January 16 and Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience World Tour stops by on February 24. Not understanding what it means to be “cool” in today’s world? Step back in time to when the term “cool” originated with the National Portrait Gallery’s “American Cool” exhibit. Opening February 7, the show includes pictures of American icons taken by renowned photographers. Looking for something in between 1940s cool and modern times? Check out “Flashdance -- The Musical” and get your ‘80s groove on. The Kennedy Center’s performance, through January 19, celebrates the hit movie’s 30th anniversary with all your favorite songs! 6

March on over to Chinatown for the Chinese New Year Parade on February 10. This annual event celebrates Chinese culture and the Year of the Horse with dragon dances and live entertainment on H Street. Not to be outdone, Old Town Alexandria showcases its heritage with George Washington’s Birthday Parade on February 17. Stick around after the floats to see many of the area’s historic sites for free on this day, including Washington’s home, Mount Vernon. Old Town welcomes you back on March 1 with its St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Featuring all things Irish, it’s a festive procession of Irish pipe bands, Irish wolfhounds, Irish dancing, Ballyshaners, and more.

Washington’s museums are known for amazing antiques. Go beyond the glass cases to see pieces of history for sale at the Washington Winter Antiques Show, January 10-12 at The Katzen Arts Center at American University. Forty-five dealers from the U.S. and Europe will sell furnishings, jewelry, and decorative arts. If priceless antiques aren’t in your budget, consider a trip to the Dulles Expo Center near the airport for the D.C. Big Flea on January 4-5 and March 1-2. It’s the Mid-Atlantic’s largest antiques and collectibles market. Speaking of collecting, Catherine the Great amassed quite a dazzling array of decorative art in gold, silver, porcelain, and enamel when she ruled Russia in the 1700s. Hillwood displays some of it in the new exhibit “Passion of the Empress: Catherine the Great’s Art Patronage”, opening on February 15.

FEATURED EXHIBITIONS Even if you’ve already been to Washington and seen the permanent collections of some of its best museums, make sure to check out the latest, limited-run exhibits.

“Workt by Hand”: Hidden Labor and His torical Quilts

Over time, quilts have been revered as nostalgic emblems of the past, hailed as examples of American ingenuity, and dismissed as women’s work. This exhibition breaks new ground by examining these categorizations through the lens of contemporary feminist theory. Thirty-five quilts from the 18th to the 20th century are on display and reveal the shifting cultural status of this medium and issues specific to quilting practices, such as anonymity versus authorship and the conventional view of quilts as craft rather than fine art. Iconic quilting designs and techniques are featured, including the “Log Cabin” style, “Double Wedding Band” designs, Amish “Sunshine and Shadow” style, album quilts, and “crazy quilts.”

Through April 27, 2014

National Building Museum Play Work Build

Research has shown how important play can be to a child’s development. But, play is not only for kids. Through this exhibition, visitors begin to see the connections between play, design, and the work of building professionals like architects and engineers. This exhibition combines a presentation of the Museum’s world-class Architectural Toy Collection, a hands-on block play area, and an original digital interactive that allows visitors to fill an entire wall of the exhibition with virtual blocks— and then knock them down.

National Portrait Gallery American Cool

Cool is an original American sensibility and remains a global obsession. In the early 1940s, jazz saxophonist Lester Young brought this concept into the modern vernacular and it became a password in bohemian life connoting a balanced state of mind, a laid-back artistic mode of performance, a certain stylish stoicism. Cool has been embodied in jazz musicians such as Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, and Dizzy Gillespie, in actors such as Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway, Robert Mitchum, and in singers such as Elvis Presley, Patti Smith, and Jay-Z and many other figures from the worlds of literature, art, comedy, sports and political activism. American Cool refers to those who have contributed an original artistic vision to American culture symbolic of a given historical moment.

ALEXANDRIA VIRGINIA

n w o t d l O

ALEXANDRIA “George Washington

slept here!”

is a dubious claim to fame that many historic sites and towns on the East Coast make in an effort to connect to our first American hero. But if there’s one place where you can definitively walk in Washington’s footsteps, it’s Old Town Alexandria. And you don’t even have to travel by horse and carriage to get there! (It’s conveniently located in Northern Virginia on the Blue and Yellow lines of the Metro.) This quaint colonial seaport on the Potomac River is considered to be George Washington’s hometown. With 140 locations related to our first president, Old Town is a treasure trove of American history. Here you can visit the original church where Washington worshiped, grab a drink in the very tavern where he dined, and wander through the same farmers’

24

market where Washington sold produce from his nearby estate, Mount Vernon.

The cobblestone streets of Old Town also feature some of the best shopping and dining in the metropolitan area. Chic boutiques and antique shops populate King Street and its adjacent roads. And a free trolley that has 20 stops from the King Street Metro to the river allows you to relax between blocks and shop well past when you would ordinarily drop! Renowned chef Cathal Armstrong has made Old Town his stomping grounds, with several popular restaurants including PX, a mysterious speakeasy that announces it’s open for customers simply by illuminating a blue light over an unmarked door. With cuisine of every type offered throughout the city, Old Town has a stellar reputation in the culinary world.

6. Hot Lights of the Theater

If visiting the Smithsonian isn’t at the top of your list, it should be! Winter is the time to take advantage of light attendance. Get your culture without the crowds. The streets of Georgetown are also much quieter this time of year. Have brunch at the cozy Bistro Francais and head for the boutiques afterwards.

3. Fireside Sipping

Want a drink with a side of sophistication? Try a warm cognac next to the fire at the Tabard Inn. It’s a great spot to meet new people.

4. Drink Your Dessert

If you’re looking for something sweeter, order up a Caffe Tiffany – a piping hot espresso with whipped cream and sprinkles at Serendipity 3.

The Washington Harbour Ice Rink, D.C.’s largest outdoor rink, is even bigger than New York City’s Rockefeller Center rink. And ours has unbeatable views of the Potomac River.

Get a glimpse of spring at the National Museum of Natural History’s Butterfly Pavilion. The blast of color – and warm temperatures – will remind you that the cold days of winter won’t last forever.

Tough-as-nails matriarch Mother Courage profits off the very war that steals her children from her one by one. But will the cost of war be higher than she’s prepared to pay? Artistic Director Molly Smith helms this unique in-the-round staging of Bertolt Brecht’s powerhouse anti-war play fusing politics, satire and music into an epic theatrical experience.
