Dogs have fur ranging from short to long coats. They come in all varying sizes and textures. There are dogs that have really long locks and ones that have none or minimal fur. Generally, dog coats are categorized into two main types.

Double Coat • A dog with a double coat has a top coat and an under coat. The top coat comprises of thick hairs that are water repellant by nature. The stiff guard hairs protect the skin of the dog. Whereas, the under coat helps regulate dog's body temperature. It protects the body from extreme weather conditions. • Keeping the body warm in winter and cool in the summer. The under coat of a dog consist of a fleecy type of fur which is relatively shorter in length. Most dogs sport a double coat and they all shed the softer under coat seasonally.

Single Coat • A dog with a single coat just has the top coat. The fleecy under coat is not present in dogs with a single coat. Since these dogs don’t have an under coat, their body is more affected by extreme temperatures unlike their counterparts. • Making them wear a dog raincoat or a sweater will protect them from harsh weather conditions. Unlike dogs with a double coat, single coat dogs do not shed their fur. So you will find less fur on your bed or mattress if your dog has a single coat.
