HOMELESS HUB IN ESSEX Volunteers needed to help Street Spirit to provide help every single week.

When a few years ago a couple of ladies walked down Southend High Street one evening, they were struck by the number of rough sleepers sleeping in doorways etc. and wanted to do something to help. Their response was next time they would go with flasks of tea and coffee and food to give out. They soon realised they wanted to do this regularly and managed to link up with others having similar concerns. It was how Street Spirit was born. Rather than search for needles in the haystack, the word went out among the rough sleeper community that every Saturday evening we would be at Clarence Road Car Park (8pm; now 7pm) giving out food and drink, items of clothing and toiletries. We have continued to go out every Saturday and typically serve up to 50 guests thanks to a cohort of willing volunteers, some taking turns in cooking hot food and giving out night packs plus some of the practical tasks needed. We are conscious what we do is limited given the needs of guests, especially for better accommodation, but we do our best to welcome and make them feel they

We point them if we can to other help that is available. While not everybody coming to us is rough sleeping most are vulnerable and appreciate the help we give. We intend to continue going out each week thanks to the help of our wonderful volunteers and those who donate to us, as there is a need. 6 TIPS TO AVOID COLD & FLU THIS WINTER 1. Keep it clean

Outside of the flu vaccine, nothing you do to keep colds and flu at bay is more effective than washing your hands. Most viruses gain access to your body by hitching a ride on your hands, hopping off at your nose, eyes, or lips, and thus gaining admission to your body. By washing your hands frequently, at least 20 seconds with soap and water, you can eliminate the virus from your hands and nip the virus’s journey in the bud. In the absence of soap and water, keep a bottle of hand sanitizer handy. But make sure the hand sanitizer is comprised of alcohol, not “antibacterial” ingredients. The latter contains chemicals that bacteria and viruses can grow immune to, potentially creating superbugs.

2. Keep your hands away from your face

It’s tough, because most people unconsciously touch their mouth, nose, eyes, and lips hundreds of times a day. But trying to be mindful can reap healthy benefits. Dr. Margarita Rohr of the New York University Langone Medical Center pointed out on CNN that, “Not touching your face greatly cuts your odds of getting sick.”

3. Have some yogurt every day

The healthy gut bacteria that yogurt and other probiotic foods (like kefir and kimchi) propagate also, studies have shown, help rev up your immune system against respiratory disease.

4. Fresh air Open your window in the winter. Hanging out and sleeping in a stuffy room with no circulating air only increases your risk of catching a virus. By opening your window, you increase air movement and decrease the chance of airborne viruses hitching a ride on you. 5. Keep your distance

This one is pretty obvious, but don’t hang out around sick people. Politeness only goes so far. If someone near you is sneezing or coughing, turn away, or, if you have the room, move away. Viruses can travel up to 20 feet in a sneeze. A simple, “Sorry. I get sick easily,” will suffice to cover your tracks.

6. Get your sleep

Sleep deprivation equals an increased chance of getting sick. More and more,studies are bearing out that the one essential for a healthy life is adequate shuteye. We don’t know the precise reasons why we (or any creature) sleeps, but we do know for sure that when we get enough of it, our bodies and our minds are happier and healthier, and our immune systems are clicking on all cylinders.

Favourite Mince Pies 350g (12 oz) high-quality mincemeat, 225g (8 oz) plain flour 2 tablespoons caster sugar, 125g (4½ oz) unsalted butter, diced 1 large egg, beaten, milk, to glaze

Method

Prep 60 min › Cook 20 mins › Serves 12 People

Lightly butter a 12-case patty tin. Tip the mincemeat into a bowl and stir so that the liquid is evenly distributed.

Place the flour, sugar and butter in a food processor and process briefly until resembling breadcrumbs, then slowly add the egg through the feeder tube (or rub the butter into the dry ingredients by hand and stir in the egg).

Bring the mixture together with your hands, wrap in cling film and chill for an hour. Thinly roll out the pastry onto a floured surface. Cut out 12 circles with a fluted pastry cutter, large enough to fill the cases in the patty tin. Press gently into each case, then fill evenly with the mincemeat.

Cut out another 12 slightly smaller circles and use to cover the mincemeat. Press the edges together with the end of a fork to seal. Make a small slit in the top of each, then brush lightly with milk. Chill for about 30 minutes.

While chilling, preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas Mark 6. Bake the pies for 20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm. Enjoy!

BRING LIFE WITH DEAD WOOD Use old, dead logs to create an inviting home and feeding ground for insects, toads, newts and bees.All the rotting wood, flaking bark and maze of little gaps between the logs is heaven for a wide range of wildlife. You won’t see much going on at first, as these creatures like to hide in the dark. If you turn one of the logs over in the day, you can watch plenty of creepy-crawlies scurrying away out of the light. At night, look for woodlice, snails and wood mice emerging from shady woodpiles. If you’ve made a log pile in the sun, look for solitary bees seeking nestholes. You can build a log pile whenever the mood takes you. But you’re likely to have logs and sticks to hand in autumn and winter when you’re managing your trees. Collect your dead wood. It’s best to get your dead wood from your own garden each time you do any pruning or lopping. You can also see if friends and neighbours have any going spare. If you get really stuck, you can buy dead wood from a local tree surgeon. But don’t just wander into a local wood and help yourself as you’ll be removing nature’s home!

WALK ONLINE ROADSHOWS Walk Online Roadshows have once again delivered to 750 Year 5 pupils from across the borough. Developed by EST E-Safety Training the roadshows explore the online world with young people through the delivery of an interactive presentation covering safe online usage and raising awareness of the risks young people may face when using the internet whether that be through access to social media sites, popular apps or games. The content explores with young people how easily they could be targeted for exploitation, helping them learn how to recognise a

risky situation and most importantly how important it is for them to report and tell someone if they feel uncomfortable with anything that happens when they are using the internet. Delivered for the 3rd consecutive year the event continues to yield excellent feedback from pupils and teachers.
