Frost Alert!

by Sharon Longshaw November is the month when we in South East Essex have a chance of experiencing the first frosts of the autumn/winter season so now is the time to move those tender plants in to the greenhouse if you haven’t already done so. Many of us now have exotics like Palms and Banana plants, as these cannot be moved I wrap mine in straw and an old duvet cover that I ripped up, it’s important to protect them while still allowing them to breath so please don’t use plastic.

A covering of leaves on plant borders and your lawn creates dark, damp conditions which create the perfect environment for many slugs, snails and fungal diseases, so you need to rake them away! If not, this can be damaging to your lawn and plants.You can even use the leaves to create leaf mould which is ideal for top dressing plants. However, please be aware that rose leaves can carry disease and evergreen leaves will take far too long to rot down so these are not ideal.

Old newspapers, kitchen waste and garden rubbish can be put on the compost heap for use next year. If you haven’t turned you compost heap recently this is a job that can keep you warm on a

cold day.Turning the heap will allow all the compost to have access to air which will help it rot down during the winter creating wonderful soil improver for your garden.

There is nothing more satisfying than growing your own fruit! November is the ideal time to plant new fruit bushes and create your own fruit garden.To get the most out of your fruit bushes, use plenty of well-rotted compost and slow release fertilizer when you plant such as Bonemeal.

Evergreen shrubs are ideal for adding colour to your garden during the winter.There are also many plants which produce fruit and flowers during the winter too such as Skimmia and Witch Hazel.When planting, use a slow release fertilizer such as blood fish and bone, to ensure that you don’t promote too much new soft growth during the winter. Brighten up your garden for the winter with the use of winter bedding plants such as winter flowering pansies, heathers and small evergreen shrubs.

Drinking Water Really is the Key to Weight Loss Don’t roll your eyes!

If you eat and exercise right but still can’t get rid of a little lump and bump here and there you’re probably just not drinking enough water. Most people don’t drink enough water and most people are also carrying around a few more pounds than they would be if they did drink enough water. This is why: Metabolism. People use this word all the time, but ask them what it means and you’ll get all kinds of answers. Here’s one definition: “The process by which a substance is handled in the body.” Sounds vague? But that’s really all it means.

There are many forms of metabolism going on in your body right now but the one everyone is talking about it the metabolism of fat. This is actually something that the liver does when it converts stored fat to energy - excellent!

Unfortunately, another of the liver’s duties is to pick up the slack for the kidneys, which need plenty of water to work properly. If the kidneys are water deprived the liver has to do their work along with its own, lowering its productivity meaning it can’t metabolise fat as quickly or efficiently as it could when the kidneys were pulling their own weight. If you allow this to happen, not only are you being unfair to your liver, but you’re also setting yourself up to store fat - not so good.

“I’ve tried water and I couldn’t stand it!”

The problem is, though many decide to increase their water intake, very few stick with it. During the first few days of drinking more water than your body is used to, you’re running to the toilet constantly!

This can be very discouraging and can interfere with an otherwise normal day at work! It seems that the water is coming out just as fast as it’s going in, and many people decide that their new hydration habit is pointless.

What is really happening is your body is flushing itself of the water it has been storing throughout all those years of “survival mode”. It takes a while, but as you continue to give your body all the water it could ask for, it gets rid of what it doesn’t need. It gets rid of the water it was holding onto in your ankles, hips and thighs, maybe even around your belly – yippee!

Your body figures it doesn’t need to save these stores anymore; it’s trusting that the water will keep coming, and if it does, eventually the flushing (of both the body and the toilet) will stop, allowing you to return to a normal life. This is called the “breakthrough point” Water will do wonders for your looks!

It flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion.

It also makes your skin look younger.

Skin that’s becoming saggy, either due to

aging or weight loss, plumps up very nicely when the skin cells are hydrated – yippee!

Also, water improves muscle tone. You can exercise until you’re blue in the face but if your muscles are suffering from a drought, you won’t notice a pleasant difference in your appearance. Muscles that have all the water they need contract more easily making your workout more effective and you’ll look much nicer than if you had flabby muscles under sagging skin!

We are all told ‘8 glasses / 2 litres a day’ but you should up this to around three litres if you are exercising. Spread your water consumption out throughout the day; it’s not healthy to drink too much water at one time. Pick 3 or 4 times a day when you can have a big glass of water and then sip in between. Don’t let yourself get thirsty; if you feel thirsty you’re already dehydrated. Drink when you’re not thirsty yet.

When you drink all the water your body needs, you will very quickly notice a decrease in your appetite, possibly even on the first day! If you're serious about becoming leaner and healthier drinking water is an absolute must. If you're doing everything else right and still not seeing results, this might just be the missing link!

Serves 4

ingredients

1tsp salt and 1 tsp ground turmeric 400g white fish fillets, skin removed, cut into large pieces 3-4 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp black mustard seeds 1 onion, peeled, grated

10 fresh curry leaves 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped

2.5cm piece root ginger, grated 1 garlic clove, peeled, crushed 1 green chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp garam masala 200g creamed coconut, grated

method

1. Sprinkle the salt & ground turmeric onto a plate. Completely coat the pieces of fish in the mixture.

2. Heat half the oil in a frying pan. Add the coated fish pieces & fry for 2-3 mins or until golden-brown & cooked through. Remove from pan & set aside on kitchen paper 3. Heat the remaining oil in a separate pan. Add mustard seeds, cover pan with a lid & fry until they start to pop.

4. Add the onion & curry leaves & continue to fry for a further 4-5mins. Add the tomatoes, ginger, garlic, chilli & garam masala & continue to fry, stirring well for 3-4 mins. Add the grated coconut cream and stir until dissolved.

5. Bring the mixture to the boil, reduce the heat & simmer until sauce has thickened.

Add 1-2 tbsp of water to the mixture to loosen as necessary.

5. Add the fried fish pieces to the sauce and cook until heated through.

Serve with rice & veggies

   
