CHIGWELL SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE GCSE EXAM SUCCESS Chigwell GCSE students have been celebrating their exam results. Of the 82-strong year group, 18 students achieved seven A* grades or more and Rhea Gupta gained an impressive set of 12 A* grades. In addition to their full complement of GCSEs, four students also took the Higher Project Qualification which requires considerable independent study, and all achieved an A*. The A* grade was the most common grade awarded to Chigwell pupils this year and 34 per cent of all grades were A*, five times the national average; 67 per cent of grades were at least an A grade, and 89 per cent were at least a B grade. Headmaster Michael Punt said: “We are very proud of all these students. They have worked very hard with their teachers, contributed a great deal and have been a really cohesive year group. “I know many were delighted with the results they achieved and I hope that this encourages all of them to continue to set their sights high for the future.”

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES PLANNED FOR REDBRIDGE COLLEGE
Renovations and new construction works are now well underway at the Chadwell Heath Campus of Redbridge College as part of a wider college redevelopment scheme scheduled for completion in 2015. The new state-of-the-art facilities will include a 150-seat theatre for Performing Arts courses, events by the college and the local community. Classroom spaces will allow teaching to take place in environments where industry conditions are closely replicated to better prepare students for employment. The new buildings will be more energy-efficient, using the latest heating and lighting technology and creating annual costsavings. The £7m build of the 2,405m2 site has been given the go-ahead by the Skills Funding Agency. t Rhea g GCSE studen Professor Brian Cox OBE, Patron of Top performin eved 12 A* grades hi Redbridge College, paid a special visit Gupta who ac

to the college for the Ground Cutting Ceremony to mark the commencement of the construction works over the summer. Professor Cox said, “I find Redbridge College an inspiring place and come back every year. The new facilities will create a space where learners can be inspired and motivated and I am looking forward to seeing the construction progress.” Redbridge College is currently holding open enrolment until the end of September at their Chadwell Heath and Ilford campuses. Spaces are filled on a first come, first served basis and prospective students are urged to enrol as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

SYNERGY GYM HELPING TO BEAT BULLYING Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a self defence system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Helio Gracie is credited as the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, forming it after he and Carlos Gracie were taught Kodokan Judo. Building from basic Judo knowledge Carlos and Helio worked on continually developing and improving the art until they had perfected it and they passed the knowledge down through their families. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was created to enable people of smaller build to protect and defend themselves against larger, stronger attackers. By using technique rather than brute strength it allows you to take an opponent to the ground and
use leverage and locks to defeat them. As a system that doesn’t rely on strength, it naturally lends itself to be an ideal method of self-defence to be used by women and children. A common way an assailant would try to gain control of a situation is to get on top of their target and use force, so, for women and children, BJJ teaches them escape techniques that can be used whether they are standing or on the ground and being dominant in any given situation. In America, BJJ is the favoured martial art taught to children who learn to defend themselves without causing injury. This is due to the fact the fact that most martial arts
rely on strikes to overthrow their attackers with kicks, punches and knees. Violent measures that are not necessary. Arlans Siquera, head of BJJ at Synergy Fitness said, “Teaching reflects the idea that Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is like fighting fire with water. Rather than aggravate the situation, it offers techniques to defuse it by gaining control in a calm yet defensive manner.” Arlans Siquera is setting up an anti-bullying programme from September to teach children how to defend themselves in a non-violent or aggressive way. The system will be integrated into the junior classes, which take place on Wednesdays and Sundays at Synergy Fitness, with separate classes for 5-7 year olds and 8-14 year olds, thereby allowing age relating instruction applicable to each group. Please contact Andrew on 07725544867 if you wish to register you or your children for the classes. Synergy Fitness is located at Lake Forest House, Forest Road, Fairlop, Essex, IG6 3HJ.

LOCKTEC SECURITY
Julian Harris
H
aving recently celebrated their 25th anniversary, I spoke to Julian Harris about Locktec Security. The company was founded by Gary Gore in 1989 with the community and family values in mind. PIANIST MADS LAURSEN
I
met with Mads Laursen, a talented Woodford based pianist who has been gaining local acclaim working in the area as well as all over London. Mads hails from Denmark and has been playing the piano since he was two and a half, receiving private lessons before ten years old and from then on he has been self-taught. He played professionally in Denmark for 20 years before making the move to England. Mads has played events all over London, from The Ritz to a Sky Sports function at Chelsea Football Club, he also plays at charity events amongst others. In July he played a wedding at the Packfords Hotel in Woodford which involved a five hour arrangement showing a true passion for his craft. Playing a variety of popular music from Adele to Elvis Presley to Rihanna. Mads will customise his playlist to the audience, therefore if he were to play for a more mature audience he would be able to find Cliff Richard and Bette Middler in his repertoire however if he were to play a Confirmation or Bah Mitzvah, he would play the likes of Pharrell and Beyonce. As Mads was self-taught from ten, he has a fantastic ear for learning a song, its notes and tones from first listen which comes in useful as he receives a lot of requests and plays upon them. His website
Mads Laurse
n has a repertoire of up to sixty hours with around 300 songs, each displaying his talent and diversity. You can find videos and links on his Facebook page www.facebook.com/pianistmadslaursen. Tel: 07875 711 692, info@madslaursen.com
SERVRITE PLUMBING & BUILDING SUPPLIES
Servrite opening day
I
n 1994, self-starter Indy Nandhray founded Servrite, beginning with electrical and building contractors and 2013 saw them expand into building and bathroom supplies. As a trained electrician himself, while contracting, Indy recognised that people were looking for good service and the right tradesman for the right job, and so became Servrite. Their growth and progress has been slow and steady, which is proving successful. In 2010 after increasing demand Servrite moved from Wanstead to Eastern Avenue, upon which they decided to start selling bathroom supplies and from which a builders merchants was formed. Servrite has spent 20 years serving the building community and building up
strong relationships with their clientele and Indy has a strong ethos of loyalty and good customer service, he is not happy until the customer is happy. Indy runs his business as if it were a family, with eight colleagues, everybody works extremely hard to concur with Servite’s values and ensure the best customer service possible, they are willing to go the extra mile and deliver to both North and West London and if the business is there, anywhere within the M25. Due to their strong client base, Servrite gains new business through word of mouth, which is the highest recommendation a business in this trade can receive. 567 Eastern Avenue, Gants Hill, IG2 6PJ, Tel. 020 8554 4250, office@servrite.co

T
here is a certain relief at the arrival of September; an exit from the chaos of the summer holidays and the return to a routined lifestyle. www.notjustadress.com A little bit of leopard goes a long way in my opinion. Not only is it one of autumn/winter's hottest trends, I believe that no matter your age, there is a way for everyone to wear leopard print. Take inspiration from this season’s catwalks where you’ll find an array of colours and patterns. Head to toe can be a little too wild, so look for beautiful separates that you can team with pieces you already have in your wardrobe. Here’s some of my favourites.

INSPIRING IDEAS FOR EVERY
ROOM How to style your living space with key furniture pieces and handy storage solutions.
S “For a hint of sophistication, sway towards designs that exude elegance” 28
o, you’ve chosen your paint shade and got your wallpaper sorted, but you’re struggling to decide on furniture and those all-important finishing touches? Planning to redecorate is exciting, but being your own interior designer can be a little daunting too. Keep calm, with a little guidance as well as a few easy tips and tricks from furniture experts Fishpools, styling your desired look isn’t as difficult as it seems. Whether you’re a fan of modish, modern design or prefer a more classic and traditional aesthetic, we’ve rounded up our favourite ways to personalise and bring beauty to every corner of your space - whatever its style and size. Follow these tips on how to create your very own flawless home:
DINE IN STYLE
The dining room is the perfect place to entertain guests, so it’s important that your scheme creates an inviting ambience to while away the hours. For a more formal setting that is sure to impress, opt for a table with clean lines, such as the stylish Kato. This modern extendable table not only provides flexibility when it comes to hosting but works well in both a classic and contemporary space. For a more laid back, country feel, choose a round table such as the wooden Campton with stunning natural grain, and pair with super comfortable button back chairs. If you desire an on-trend eclectic look, mix and match a few statement chairs adorned in bright colours for plenty of impact.

STOCK UP ON STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Keeping on top of organising your belongings can be tricky and it’s no secret that in order to banish cluttered chaos, storage is key to ensuring a room remains functional. To keep order and possessions neatly out of sight, introduce storage with versatile, concealed compartments such as drawers or hidden shelving for a super tidy and streamlined look. Storage can also be an attractive focal point. Choose interesting pieces such as vintage travel trunks or stack old suitcases for that retro feel. Not everything has to be hidden away when it comes to storage. Showcase your favourite collectables with stunning open shelving such as the striking Mammoth unit with its cool zig-zag design.
GIVE YOUR LIVING SPACE A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
If you have chosen a neutral backdrop, don’t be afraid to cover walls and large surfaces with soft tones that will allow colourful furniture and accessories to really pop. Introduce vibrant hues such as zingy greens, oranges and yellows on rugs, sofas and cushions. To complete the look, pick patterned pieces like the new Matrix Max Rugs to break up larger blocks of colour and complement furniture such as the Camden Sofa range. Use smaller accessories in an array of citrus shades to accelerate this sophisticated look.
ADD AN OCCASIONAL CHAIR
Whether it be for an unused corner or a fabulous main focal point to your scheme, an occasional chair will always
&
make a great addition to any room. Occasional chairs come in an array of styles and sizes, so it’s worth deciding if you’ll be opting for pretty over practical before you pick your design. For a hint of sophistication, sway towards designs that exude elegance. A beautifully bowed chaise longue upholstered in a rich velvet fabric is a fabulous choice, while stylish highback chairs with tapered wooden legs and button-back detailing will suit contemporary spaces. For a truly inviting feel that’s both cosy and chic, complement an occasional chair with an extensive range of sumptuous cushions and throws.
CREATE AN INVITING SLUMBER
An easy way to create a new look in your bedroom is to start by replacing a key piece such as the bed and its mattress. However, before you start picking the style, seek the advice of sleep experts, such as the Fishpools’ bed team, who are on hand to advise on which options will provide you with a rejuvenating and supportive rest. A bed frame will give you more options when it comes to design and those with beautifully ornate detailing will make a real impact. Divans will often come with built-in drawers and are great at maximising bedroom storage. A headboard can then be added to make a style statement, along with beautiful bedding and a selection of decorative soft furnishings to maximise cosiness and comfort. GARDENING WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON
A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.
S
eptember is a busy month for the gardener, as the changing seasons bring many new jobs to your doorstep. Keep your garden looking attractive through to autumn with my gardening tips for September. _ During this month you will begin to notice that the summer bedding is starting to look tired and a little worse for wear. Revitalise your tubs and baskets with some pansies, small conifers, violas and grasses to help add some autumn colour and interest. _ Move any shrubs that have outgrown their space. _ Raise the height of your mower blades as grass growth slows down. _ Begin planting springflowering bulbs such as
daffodils, crocus and hyacinths. _ Keep deadheading annuals and perennials to extend their performance. _ Start to divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools. Make sure you keep watering them in well.
Store seeds in paper bags
_ Collect seeds from perennials and hardy annuals to preserve your favourite flowering gems until next year. Seed pods should be picked when they begin to change from green to
a tan or brownish colour, and develop a brittle texture when the seeds inside are ripe. Place them into brown paper bags and store in a dry, ventilated location for a few weeks to ripen further and continue the drying process. Don’t forget to write the name of the plant on the seed bag. Once the pods are completely dried, seeds can be taken from the pods. Kitchen sieves can sometimes come in handy to help you sift the actual seed from the other dried bits of plant material. The fully dried seeds now need to be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Written by Amenity Horticulturalist & gardening committee member of Copped Hall and Epping Horticultural Society Victoria Robertson.
The bright red adult lily beetle feeds on the flowers, leaves and stems of the lily. An infestation of lily beetles in the garden or greenhouse can destroy and kill lily bulbs and plants. They can be found underneath the leaves of lily plants. Check leaves regularly and remove any adult beetles by hand.
WILDLIFE WATCH
Hoverflies are important pollinators of flowering plants. They tend to hover near and rest on flowers. There are over 250 different hoverfly species in Britain. Adults drink nectar and eat pollen and some species feed on dead insects. Look out for them hovering near and resting on flowers this month. Many seem prone to entering conservatories and greenhouses too and can quite often be mistaken for wasps.

uba is an affordable all-inclusive destination with a dazzling history. It is the ideal place for a multi-centre holiday incorporating beaches and a proud, vivid culture. In partnership with Western & Oriental Abbotts Travel have created two very different ways - by road or by sea - of exploring this Caribbean jewel. Self-drive is ideal for island exploration, starting in the capital, Havana. Step back in time with streets full of unique glamour, and a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage ‘Old Quarter’ that dates back to 1515. A walking tour gets you up close to Plaza Vieja, once the home of bullfights and executions, now gloriously restored. The baroque Plaza de la Catedral, constructed mainly from coral, is nearby and demands attention. The Museo de la Revolución is a vast museum detailing the

struggles of the Cuban Revolution. You will find the tank that Fidel Castro used in the 1961 invasion of the Bay of Pigs, and the Granma yacht that transported fighters. A daiquiri at The Floridita lets you step in the shoes of Ernest Hemingway, while the Malecon at sunset lets you melt into a crowd of local lovers and classic cars. Heading away from the city, Vinales is in the western province of Pinar del Rio, famous for limestone mountains and tobacco plantations, a great place to learn how tobacco is grown and produced. There are also a number of cave networks that you can visit, hot springs and lots of hiking and bird watching opportunities. Progress from there to Las Terrazas, a community built on the idea of sustainability. The Hotel la Moka is a great base from which to walk to the waterfalls, take the zip line, go horse riding, fishing and
more. The Orchid Garden in Soroa is nearby, and it is a great place for meeting the locals. Abbotts also recommend Cienfuegos, a charming sea port where the Star Flyer cruise departs from December - March. The city was settled by French immigrants and their legacy remains in the architecture. There is a wonderful botanical garden and the city is home to many of Cuba’s artists and musicians. Trinidad is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring some great paladares (non-state owned and usually family-run restaurants) offering local dishes, and a number of music houses where you can sit and listen, dance and sample the local rum. Good accommodation is sparse here and the excellent Iberostar can be sold out months in advance if booked independently. A casa particulare, in which you stay in a room connected

Dinner can be enjoyed at your leisure in a relaxed setting (casual elegance is the dress code). The Star Flyer offers an informal holiday experience with no strict schedules and a friendly daily briefing by the captain. Abbotts’ suggested cruise combines 4 nights in Havana with 7 nights sailing along Cuba’s south coast, visiting soft sand beaches and the islands of Little and Grand Cayman. Prices start at £2709 per person
including flights from the UK to Havana, 3 nights at Iberostar Parque Central on arrival and 1 night at Iberostar Parque Central post cruise, private transfers in Cuba, 7 night cruise on full board in a standard inside cabin. plan kitchen for all to see. Head Chef Champ Wongwai shows us their recipe for tender fillet steak, which they choose as this is the leanest cut of meat, with the least amount of fat. This recipe will also work with any cut you prefer. Method 1. Wash, pat dry and chop the coriander in to small pieces. 2. In a pestle and mortar grind together the garlic, salt, pepper and coriander seeds to form a rough paste. If you do not have a pestle and mortar, a food processor may also be used. 3. Place the two steaks on a chopping board, flatten them slightly,
using a meat tenderiser. 4. Put the steaks in a bowl and mix this together with the paste and all of the remaining ingredients. 5. Cover with cling film and leave to marinate, ideally for 2 hours in the fridge. 6. Heat your griddle pan, add a little oil and place the steak down once hot.
7. Leave for 1 minute on its side and then turn and repeat, to seal the meat. 8. You can then proceed to cook the steak to your preference, turning after every 1-1.5 minutes to ensure an even cook. 9. Once ready, lay to rest for 1 minute and serve. This dish serves well with

COMMUNITY
FRENFORD CLUBS From dance classes to wheelchair basketball, there is something for everyone at Frenford Clubs.
By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham
F
renford Clubs was founded in 1928 by Jack Carter, a young Quaker who saw a need to help the youth and was determined to give children and teenagers a safe and social place away from the streets. It started originally as a boy’s club and by 1930 it grew into a sports and social club for both boys and girls. In 1975, Frenford Clubs was converted to a charity in order to gain recognition and maintain their resources to secure the future of the club. Situated in Ilford at The Jack Carter Centre, their namesake in honour of the founder, Frenford Clubs offer a plethora of sports, activities and mentoring programmes. Sports that are offered include badminton, football and cricket amongst others which all prove extremely popular with the visitors. Frenford also offers workshops such as a music studio and dance classes in order to
offer a more varied timetable. Along with fun-filled sports and activities, English and Maths tuition are offered as well as a free legal advice surgery, up to the age of 25, there is also a job workshop in which Frenford will help with CV’s, applications and interview techniques. Frenford also offer disabled multi sports and wheelchair basketball, both of which are rare in the area and therefore demonstrates the club’s embracing nature of all young people. Frenford Clubs is very popular in the local community, July alone saw 936 visitors to the centre with young adults partaking in the aforementioned activities and many more. While Frenford receives funding, for a charity that reaches out to so many it cannot be enough and so fundraiser Neal Patel works extremely hard. While some of their income comes from membership and activity fees, prices are kept low for the young people and most
sports and workshops cost £1 £3 with a membership. Frenford are keen to point out that young members are their priority and will be given privilege when booking, in keeping with the values that Jack Carter built Frenford upon. In the future, Frenford are looking to expand, they are keen to see a Youth Football Club be formed as well as offering more for girls in order to enhance their female memberships. At The Jack Carter Centre, there are football pitches, a dance studio and a full sports hall upon a multitude of other facilities which Frenford have made available for hire, which goes towards their income and prices start from as low as £10. There is a 100 year lease on the grounds which will ensure that now and in the future, young people will have a safe place to go. For more information visit www.frenfordclubs.org and for facility hiring costs call 020 8518 0992.

Sarah Lynch, a local Secondary School Teacher and mum of three gives her view and advice for the next school year.
t’s that time of year again, no sooner have you felt the sand in your flip flops, the ice cream on your tongue and you start to...relax, there you see them. First one, then two, then they’re everywhere those three little words that can fill people equally with both joy and dread... “BACK TO SCHOOL”. Rather like Christmas, it seems to start earlier each year, this time from about the first week in August.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS
Recent press reports have suggested that the average parent spends between £500-£900 getting their little darlings ready for their next big educational step and if they are starting university then you can up the estimate to at least £1000. So, what to do? Apart from the myriad of choices available from 1D rulers to Angry Birds pencil cases and to buy or not to buy the Lelli Kelly shoes that look just like all the others but come with... MAKE UP and cost three times more, because, “Mum, everyone else will have them...” What about the bigger concerns? Will my child be bullied, will they fit in, have friends, will they learn anything, will they be happy, will they have their heads flushed down the toilets and perhaps secretly, “Will I be judged a rubbish parent”?
RELAX!
Above all, relax, if you are stressed out, more than likely, your child will pick up on that stress. It’s easy to say but really, they WILL be OK. At the end of the day, what really matters isn’t about what trainers they have or who is on their pencil case, they will find the friends that don’t care about that and are more concerned with their Loom Band skill level.
PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
Suggestions would be, for the practical ties, get as much uniform as possible from the Supermarkets, the recent price war is good for parents, the basics such as polo shirts, socks and undies should not cost the earth! You can even pick up trousers and skirts cheaply. You don’t even need posh name labels, a Sharpie on EVERYTHING
will be your best friend. Also make sure everything is NON IRON! You will be grateful of this on a Sunday evening when you realise you have run out of trousers! Purchase generic plain lunch boxes and water bottles, the kids can customise them with stickers themselves, this makes it more personal, fun for them and cheaper.
CONCERNS
As for the big concerns, the golden rule is always TALK! Talk to your children’s friends, their teachers, their friends’ parents, but most importantly to your children, How was your day, what did you do,
“The average parent spends between £500-£900 getting their little darlings ready for their next big educational step” anything you need, anything interesting happening? Try to be as active a part of their school life as possible whist remaining a decent distance so as not to be “embarrassing”. Most children go through their school lives happy and content but there is lots of help out there if you are worried about signs to look out for in terms of anxiety, stress and related issues. Most importantly, Don’t Panic and Good Luck!

DAD’S DIARY

ENTERING FATHERHOOD
WITHOUT A MAP T
his month has been quite up and down (not just on his trampoline either). We’ve gone from a severe bout of tonsillitis to side splitting hysterical laughter at blowing raspberries in my face, amongst other events. So, firstly the tonsillitis, our little man had gone to bed as normal but around 2am we started to hear some strange sounds on the monitor, we had picked up radio Mongolia again... I got the monitor quite cheap and an unfortunate crossed wire means I know the Mongolian top 20 off by heart. We checked on him anyway and lucky we did! His temperature had soared and he was in a very bad way, we thought this was a result of his recent immunisations so out came the Calpol! The next morning he was still poorly so we took him down to the doctors who diagnosed the tonsillitis. This made me feel doubly bad as I had tried to give him a Farley’s Rusk with his breakfast, not the best thing for a sore throat! The doctors gave us some antibiotics that tasted slightly worse than urine and expected our lad to happily gulp it down four times a day. Obviously this became a massive struggle as he immediately became agitated every time we moved the spoon towards his mouth. As soon as he saw the bottle he would cover his eyes with his hands as if this meant we could no longer see him. Through a cheeky system of letting him drink something nice then squirting in a quick dose of medicine and bribery with chocolate buttons, we eventually got the drugs in him and within 48 hours he was back to his normal bubbly self. Very bubbly in fact. His new game, even before he got ill, was blowing raspberries, very loud ones. Unfortunately this was also an amazingly successful way to spread his tonsillitis, and now he had recovered and his throat was better,

the raspberries started once more. He found them so funny he would often be laughing with such force that he’d struggle to actually get his mouth into the correct shape to perform the next one. This was very funny to watch, until he would once again find the facial strength and launch another raspberry saliva missile straight at your face... This then became very funny for everyone else. His other trick is learning to turn switches on and off, these can be for table side lamps, or plug sockets, or fish tank lights, basically
“From the outs ide I’m sure our house looks haunted.”
anything at a low level that we have tried in vain to keep him away from. As with all his new ‘skills’ it’s cute at first, “Oh look, he’s blowing a raspberry, oh look he’s turning off a lamp” … until it becomes “My face is covered in saliva and I’ve just missed a goal being scored!” as the TV goes blank. It’s now as though we live in a haunted house, lights start to flicker, radios come on and off and the fish seem to live under a strobe light. Our little poltergeist is laughing as he wanders between rooms looking for switches to push and people to blow raspberries at. From the outside I’m sure our house looks haunted as lamps randomly flicker on and off in different rooms, in fact, with Halloween next month perhaps this won’t be so bad, so long as all the light bulbs haven’t blown by then! I should also mention his growing sense of independence and desire to do things for himself. This is good when he is reaching for the toothbrush, or holding his beaker,
but it can be a liitle tricky when he grabs the spoon from your hand and flings yoghurt across his face, or launches some peas into his ears. Unfortunately ‘dinner time’ is one area where we have to curb his independence a little until he fully masters the angle the spoon should be held at, although he’s doing well with the fork (I’ve only been stabbed twice this week). The other day when he was climbing the stairs he started to actually walk up them instead of crawling, I commented “Well done” at which point he stopped half way up, turned round and started to applaud himself, promptly falling back down the stairs into my arms. Note to self, congratulate him once he’s at the summit! At the end of the month we headed round to a friend’s BBQ and the little man leapt onto the bouncy castle like a child possessed. Giggling as he flung himself around like a mini Tasmanian devil, it seemed like only a matter of time before he would be sick everywhere. Thankfully this never happened, unthankfully it came out of the other end. After the quick nappy change pit stop (no typo there luckily!), he was back bouncing and having fun with the other kids. On the way home he went through his new found repertoire of words, mainly animal based with fish, ducks, pigs and dogs getting a mention “Fiiiish, fiiiishhh, quack quack, quack quack, oof oof, oof oof” for the barking dog, and then a snort for a pig that sounded like he was about to cough up an entire trough of farm food. This ‘end of day’ noise session is also played out just before bed each night, when his eyes are slowly starting to close and you think he has dozed off, he suddenly yells “Oof oof!!” and then slumps back down into our arms. ...TO BE CONTINUED

CLUB FOCUS
BARKINGSIDE FOOTBALL CLUB B
By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham
arkingside Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in the area, founded in 1889, they have been playing ever since. Jimmy Flannagan has held the role of Chairman and Secretary for the past eight years, after being involved with football since the age of fourteen, he previously worked at Millwall and then in kits and leisurewear. Flannagan’s involvement is spouted from his sheer love of the game, citing Barkingside FC as his home team, he also finances the club. Barkingside FC Seniors play in the Ryman League One North, the Under 21 team also play in the equivalent league for their age group, both are 11 a-side teams. Barkingside FC is also home to nine teams from ages 6-14, ages 6-11 playing 6 a-side football. The Youth section has only been active for a year and in this short time they have drawn a great amount of local interest in the community. For senior and U21 teams, training takes place twice a week at the Metropolitan Police grounds in Chigwell and they play at Cricklefield Stadium in Ilford after a recent move from Oakside where they previously played for 56 years. The team also have to do a fair amount of travel in their participation, teams as far afield as Wrexham, Norfolk, Bognor Regis

and Sussex play in the Ryman League One North. In the next few years, Flannagan hopes that Barkingside FC will still be a part of the Ryman League, which could prove difficult as Barkingside FC are one of the only teams in the league without a budget, however fans remain optimistic. The team are also looking to open summer camps for youth teams which will no doubt benefit the publicity of the club but also provide a platform for scouting talented young players. The community plays a huge role at this football club, players hail locally from East London and Essex and they have strong affiliations with local businesses, they are able to advertise at the grounds and promote admission initiatives. Barkingside has a great reputation as a family and community club, it is clear from attending one of their matches that they receive a great amount of local support and have a close knit fan-base. Flannagan’s primary hope for the future of Barkingside FC is that they can maintain their great local reputation and continue to play an active part in their community. For further information about Barkingside FC, including upcoming fixtures and details about their rich history, visit www.pitchero.com/ clubs/barkingsidefc. If you are interested in joining Barkingside FC, please contact Jimmy Flannagan at 07956 894 194.
