Dear Darren, I just wanted to say thank you for the article in your last issue about autism awareness and Anna Kennedy Online. I had not heard of the charity before but am pleased it has been bought to my attention as my 7 year old son is autistic, so we are grateful for any extra support or advice we get relating to this matter. We are planning on taking him to the fun day next month and can hopefully make it to the Awareness Day too. Many thanks Jo Wainwright Kennedy

A short roundup of what’s been going on

GET ON YOUR BIKE FOR ESSEX AIR AMBULANCE

Calling all cyclists! Come down to Earls Colne Business Park between Braintree and Colchester on Sunday 22nd May and join us for a ride around the beautiful Colne Valley countryside and help raise vital funds for your local Air Ambulance Charity. The Essex Air Ambulance Colne Valley Cycle Ride is a fun and easy way to support the Charity. There are 3 routes to choose from; 50 miles for the serious cyclists, 20 miles for intermediate riders and a 3 mile family ride. The circular routes start and finish at The Cricket Pitch on Earls Colne Business Park, Earls Colne, CO6 2NS. Cycle Ride registration opens at 9am with staggered start times between 9:30am and 11:00am.

The helicopter will be at the event, giving people the unique opportunity to see the Air Ambulance up close and meet the Air Crew! Cyclists are encouraged to get sponsored to help raise even more funds to keep the helicopter flying and saving lives. There is no minimum amount to raise but just £50 from each cyclist taking part would make a huge difference…every little helps! The registration fee is £16 per cyclist in advance (pre-registration closes on 15th May) or £20 on the day. Under 14’s go free! (up to 3 children when cycling with full paying adult). For details visit EssexAirAmbulance. uk.com and to pre-register contact the Events Team on Events@EHAAT. uk.com or call 0345 241 7690.

STUDENTS’ CAKE SALE SUPPORTS BARNARDO’S

Students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, raised £92.55 for the children’s charity Barnardo’s when they held a cake sale. The fundraising event was organised by Year 8 student Arjun Kuhaendran who has also held two other cake sales for charity. He said: “The day went really well. We sold cupcakes, brownies and cookies. I am hoping to do something else next time to make it more fun for the pupils. Overall it was fantastic I didn’t expect to get such a high total!” He added: “The help from (fellow students) Remi, Seyon and Sonya was what made it go so well on the day. The support from (headteacher) Mrs Howarth made the day happen and the extra baking of brownies from Mrs Sharma helped us a lot in making money. “The cakes went in seconds as soon as the crowd came. Organising it was a bit tricky but with the help of Nathan it made it much easier for me. “I hope that the money we raised will benefit the young poor children supported by Barnardo’s.” Headteacher Frances Howarth said: “I have been very impressed with Arjun’s and Nathan’s commitment to fundraising and to wanting to help others who are less fortunate than themselves. “The event was very well planned. Both boys are a real asset to the school.”

EPPING FOREST MP ELEANOR LAING ATTENDS INTERNATIONAL CHURCHILL SOCIETY MEETING

Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing attended a meeting of the International Churchill Society held at Chigwell Golf Club. The meeting - organised by chairman Tony Woodhead and secretary Raymond Warner, saw Celia Sandys, granddaughter of Sir Winston, give a “brilliant” lecture which was illustrated by pictures and videos of the Great Man, entitled, “The Power of Words”. She took her enraptured audience through the history of Sir Winston’s most famous speeches explaining their importance and effect. For the

audience it was a very special experience - hearing about Sir Winston directly from his beloved granddaughter. Mrs Laing said: “Hearing about Sir Winston directly from his granddaughter, Celia, was a very special experience. “Celia is an accomplished historian and chronicler of her grandfather’s works. Her presentation was brilliant - most informative and utterly enthralling. “The members of the local branch of the International Churchill Society enjoyed it immensely.”

Fundraising is underway at a Loughton school to help provide a piece of equipment the school never wants to use. Emergency First Aid Ltd is working with Thomas Willingale School and Nursery in The Broadway to raise £1,000 for a defibrillator. Danny Hyde, Emergency First Aid Ltd director and lead instructor, hopes to eventually raise sufficient money to provide the equipment for other schools that it works with in the area. The company will provide free training once the defibrillator has been purchased. Danny said: “Our staff, shareholders and family will be taking on various challenges in the next few years to achieve this. A 100km run and a gruelling hike up Pen Y Fan are already planned along with a triathlon in September. Danny said: “Sadly 270 children die in the UK every Danny Hyde from year after suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest at school. LEARN TO FISH CARP ACADEMY LAUNCHES IN HAVERING The Learn to Fish Carp Academy in association with Angling Direct will launch at a lake in the London Borough of Havering in an attempt to get children from London, Essex, Herts and Kent away from the computer screens and back into the great outdoors during the school holidays with one of the nation’s favourite pass times, fishing. Concentrating on the fast growing carp fishing scene, children will learn the basics of fishing from qualified coaches with

the chance at landing a big fish to show their friends. The first bookable sessions are starting from the 28th of May 2016 and are open to children aged 7-15 at Tylers Common Fishery in Upminster. Although this is a paid event it does include free Membership to the Academy, free fishing equipment hire supplied by Angling Direct whilst all bait for the session is provided free by Baitcraft. Sessions are running throughout the school holidays with overflow

weekend sessions available. The academy is supported by the Angling trust and sponsored by some of the biggest tackle and bait manufacturers in the country. Interactive shopping baskets also take away the headache for parents wanting to purchase the equipment and bait needed for this exciting hobby. Availability is limited and sessions can be booked online at www. learntofish.co.uk or by calling 07535139632.

UNIVERSITY STUDENT TO ABSEIL OFF AVON GORGE FOR CHARITY A university student from Epping will be taking part in a 200m abseil from the top of Avon Gorge in Somerset to raise money for a charity which has supported her family for 21 years. Sophie Turrell, 19, of James Street, Epping, hopes to raise £200 when she takes the plunge to support the charity bibic, which supports children and young adults, on Saturday 7th May. Sophie said: “Bibic has this wonderful ability to welcome beautiful children, desperate parents and everyone in-between in the family, provide them with the support and comfort they need, for them to leave smiling and hopeful. “There is a rising population of children with disabilities nationally and I hope that through events like this, not only will they help fundraising for the charity, but also promote and expand the reach of the charity, so they are able to help even more children such as my brother.” Sophie’s family have been involved with bibic since her older brother, Charles, who will be 21 in

August, was eight months old. Sophie, who is in her first year studying law at the University of Winchester, said: “Before we found bibic, we were in a hopeless situation with the hospitals not offering any new information or help about Charles’ condition. “Bibic not only offered us help and answers, they offered us support as a family, not just for Charles. I can guarantee that without bibic, none of us would be where we are today.” Sophie’s only previous abseil experience saw her drop 20m on a climbing wall while on a school trip nine years ago. Now she is preparing for something far more daunting. She said: “This is going to be a massive challenge and I hope I remember the right techniques! When I agreed to take part I thought it would only be about 50m, or a little climbing wall. When I found out it was closer to 200m I almost fell off my chair! “I can’t imagine how I’m going to feel when I’m at the

top but I guarantee I’ll feel much better once I get to the bottom on solid ground again!” Anyone who wants to support Sophie’s fundraising effort can do so via her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/SophieAnne-Turrell

THE 1 EXPERIENCE EXTRAORDINARY

The natural, cultural and man-made wonders of the world have enough for a lifetime’s travel on their own. The headliners are obvious: the pyramids of Giza, Machu Picchu and the Great Wall of China. Then come landmarks like Uluru (Ayers Rock), the national parks of the USA, or the Northern Lights. Our list is far from comprehensive, but we bet you already have at least one wondrous location on your wish list.

The rising and setting of the sun can sear itself into memory. It’s all about location. Seeing it wake above the Taj Mahal is lifeenhancing, while a Zanzibar sunset sets the sky ablaze in orange. Monument Valley, Cambodia and

3 CHALLENGE YOURSELF

You can supersize this one perhaps climb a mountain or something equally heroic, but challenge comes in many sizes. It may involve hiking a glacier in South America or Canada, exploring the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania, pedalling in Poland, painting in Crete or sailing in Kos.

BASE ALL ABOUT THAT

&

FASHION BEAUTY

Amanda from Finesse Hair & Beauty in Chingford tells us her daily routine for achieving a beautifully flawless make up base.

1PRIMER

Like most things, it’s all in the prep! The way your make up base appears relies heavily on your skin care regime. Following a good skin care routine, primer is key to achieving long lasting coverage. Primers do for your skin what lingerie does for your figure - they smooth, flatter, conceal and hold things in place, so that everything you put on top of them looks immediately better. ‘Smashbox Photo Finish Primer’ (£25.50 www. smashbox.co.uk) is one that I always use and am very loyal to just because it hasn’t let me down so far!

2 FOUNDATION

Once you have applied your primer you can go ahead and apply your foundation. The foundation you use is very much personal choice, as you will want to match your foundation with your skin type but for something long lasting, try ‘Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation’. Using a dense flat top brush like Real Techniques Stippling Brush (£11.99 Boots) is very important as it helps you create a much smoother appearance.

(peaks above your top lip). This helps contour your face and brightens your make up base. I would recommend using ‘High Beam’ by Benefit Cosmetics (£19.50 Boots).

3

CONCEALER

Apply an under eye concealer after your foundation and ideally after your eye make up, this will eliminate any eye shadow dropping and sticking to your concealer and you having to re do all your hard work. Pick a light reflecting creamy product that wont look caked and crease throughout the day. For skin blemishes and specific coverage choose a heavier matt concealer. It may sound like a lot of work having 2 types of concealer but the skin around the eye is very different from the rest of your skin on your face. Givenchy Teint Couture Concealer (£24.00 House Of Fraser) is great for under the eyes.

4 HIGHLIGHTER

Add a few dots to the top of your cheekbones and around your eye area, particularly the inner corners of your eye for a bright-eyed look. You can also add a dot on your cupids bow

5 POWDER

The last step to achieving the perfect base is to finish off with a powder. It helps keep your face shine free and also keeps your make up in place. If you use a slightly darker powder under your cheekbones and jaw line this will contour your face, but very naturally. You can use a simple translucent powder for the rest of your face. If you require more staying power then you can go ahead and spray your face with ‘MAC Prep and Prime Fix +’ £17.00 available at www.mac cosmetics.co.uk. CHRONIC

BACK PAI N ASK THE EXPERT

H E A LT H FITNESS

&

Is your life blighted by back pain? Are you seized by the agony of sciatica? Stuck on the merry-go-round of painkillers and GP visits? Spinal expert, Neil Velleman answers some commonly asked questions.

WHAT IS CHRONIC BACK PAIN?

‘Chronic’ means pain which has persisted for more than 12 weeks. Some sufferers may have had pain for several months or even years. Long-term back pain can have various causes but for many sufferers, it is due to a disc condition.

WHAT IS A HERNIATED OR ‘SLIPPED’ DISC?

Discs are the protective pads of connective tissue dividing the bones of the spine - the ‘shock absorbers’ which protect the spine. Being on our feet all day, sitting at workstations or lifting heavy objects, can weaken the spine, eventually causing a disc to bulge or even rupture. When damage like this occurs we might say the disc has ’slipped’, herniated or prolapsed.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’VE ‘SLIPPED’ A DISC?

Typically, you will suffer with episodes of pain which will become more frequent over time. You may experience additional symptoms such as nerve pain in the arms or legs (sciatica), neck pain or headaches.

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated by a protruding disc, it can result in a grinding or shooting pain travelling from the buttock down the length of the leg. Sometimes the pain is accompanied by tingling, numbness or weakness in the legs and feet.

HOW DO I GET HELP?

You should talk to a back pain specialist with experience in disc-related problems. Chronic back pain and sciatica usually require a combination of antiinflammatory medicine and physical therapy - including the non-invasive, targeted disc treatment, IDD Therapy.

HOW CAN IDD THERAPY HELP?

IDD Therapy relieves back pain and sciatica without the need for surgery.

IDD Therapy uses safe and gentle pulling forces to draw apart specific spinal segments where discs are damaged, removing pressure and irritation from any trapped nerves. Patients receive a structured programme of regular IDD Therapy sessions, progressively relieving pain and improving mobility.

ABOUT THE EXPERT

As well as working with patients in the Woodford community, Neil Velleman lectures to medical students, GPs and colleagues. He specialises in spinal disc conditions and associated nerve pain. His practice is an approved IDD Neil Velleman Therapy Disc Clinic.

MARGARET’S IDD THERAPY EXPERIENCE

Retired nurse Margaret Vernalls suffered for 4 years with back pain and sciatica: “As a result of two disc bulges, I suffered a grinding sciatic pain in my leg when I’d been walking or sitting for too long. I couldn’t do my normal daily activities simple things like dressing myself and standing at the sink to wash the dishes. After IDD Therapy I’m virtually pain-free and enjoying walking with my friends again. I’ve finally got my life back.” Call Atkins Physiotherapy Consultants on 020 8504 0478 or go to: www.AtkinsPhysio.com. Located at: 154 High Road, Woodford Green IG8 9EF

MARATHON JOURNEY

C

Sophie Vowden from SV Sports Therapy quizzes two of her clients about their London Marathon experience.

ongratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s VLM 2016, what an amazing and awe-inspiring day! At SV Sports Therapy we have been working with a lot of London Marathon runners this year, helping them with current sports injuries or simply for maintenance sports massages to their tired legs. 56 of our clients completed the London Marathon this year and we have worked closely with 3 local charities helping their amazing London marathon runners during their training! Two amazing clients of ours, Chloe Stephens and Sallie Croton successfully completed their first ever marathon! We asked them a few questions in the build up to race day and this is what they had to say:

Chloe Stephens

1

Sallie Croton

Why did you decide to enter the VLM 2016? Chloe To see how far I could push myself physically and mentally. Sallie To challenge myself to something way outside my comfort zone, and to raise money for Cancer Research.

2

What has been the most challenging obstacle so far? Chloe Finding enough time to complete my training programme. Sallie To mentally convince myself that I can do it. What has been the most surprising thing to note so far? Chloe Your body is capable of so much more than you think! Sallie I am more capable than I imagined and I’ve risen to every challenge along the way.

3

4

If you were to train for the VLM 2017 next year, would you do anything differently and why? Chloe I would make sure I made the most of my rest day on the weekend and lay in more often! Sallie I would start training earlier, rather than having only started in February due to injury.

5

What 3 tips would you give to someone who is thinking about entering VLM 2017? Chloe Stay focused. Believe in yourself. Just keep going. Sallie Be prepared for the allconsuming training, believe in yourself (if I can do it, you can!), see a great Sports Therapist!

So what now? Feeling lost after completing the London Marathon and not sure what to do next? This is very common, people who have been training for an event over the last 4-6 months often feel quite depressed once they have completed their challenge. Our advice is to simply find a new challenge! There are copious amounts of running challenges throughout the year, muddy obstacle course races to train for, the world is literally your ‘oyster’. Don’t fall into the black hole for months on end, instead, find a new goal and go for it! Remember your body is marathon fit, your aerobic capacity is fully functioning and after your marathon legs have recovered, they will be ready to embark on a new challenge. Some science research papers have even suggested it is detrimental to health to cease activity post training and running a marathon. So... who is signing up for London Marathon 2017?!! For more information about help with sports related injuries and post marathon sports massage, please contact SV Sports Therapy on 07904 116757 or email reception@svsportstherapy.com.

SPRING STYLE YOUR GARDEN FOR

W

By Robert Bridgman, Director at Bridgman

ith spring well under way and extra hours of light flooding our days, it’s time to turn our attention to outdoor spaces and how we’ll be spending our time in them. Whether you enjoy socialising, working or simply lazing outdoors, creating a functional outside area is key to making the most of the season and with a few simple steps, you can craft an idyllic space in no time at all.

28

CONSIDER THE STYLE:

If you enjoy eating and entertaining alfresco, proper furniture is a must, but in order for these pieces to look at home in your garden they’ll need to complement the design of your property. Homes with period features and traditional garden spaces will pair beautifully with classic rattan styles - such as Bridgman’s Devon and Paddock collections. Those with modern spaces should look for

really fit your space. If they’re too large they’ll only serve to make the area feel cramped and by doing so you’ll be reluctant to use them. Compact dining tables and foldable chairs are always a failsafe option as they can be tidied away when not in use. If you’re lucky enough to have a larger garden, modular corner sofas are a great way to add structure and will help to create a social zone, that’s perfect for entertaining. Smaller armchairs and tables can then be built up around it depending on requirements.

MAKE IT DURABLE:

contemporary models - such as Bridgman’s Kingston collection. Its clean lines and luxurious deep seats will complement the finish that comes with newer homes. Alternatively, lightweight aluminum pieces in pastel colours - such as the San Marino Dining Table and Chairs - will make a chic addition.

TAKE ACCOUNT OF YOUR SPACE:

Furniture requirements will naturally vary depending on the size of your garden but with a huge array of styles and sizes available - from accommodating modular units to small bistro tables and chairs - it’s easy to make the most of the space you have. For those with a smaller garden or even a balcony, it’s worth taking the time to find models that

Another key consideration is the quality and durability of your furniture. Variable English weather calls for furniture that will look good, rain or shine. From weatherproof rattan that can be left outside all year round to waterproof and stain-proof cushions, investing in pieces that can withstand wear, tear and spills will pay dividends for years to come.

ADD THE FINISHING TOUCHES:

When it comes to adding the finishing touches, imagine you were decorating your living room. While in most cases neutral tones will remain the base colour for outdoors schemes, introducing bold hues using scatter cushions, throws and brightly-coloured parasols will really bring your look to life; in larger spaces they’ll tie everything together and in smaller ones they’ll help to inject a bit of personality. That said, simplicity is a virtue when it comes to colour, so try to stick to one or two bold colours to create a non-cluttered, yet eye-catching display. Don’t forget to also consider the flowers you already have planted and construct a palette that will co-exist with these throughout the season. Preparing your space for balmy summer nights is just as important as prepping for day-time activities. Lanterns and fairy lights are an easy way to create an ambient party atmosphere and a fire pit - such as Bridgman’s Sorrento model - will keep guests warm, long after the sun goes down. An extensive range of outdoor furniture is now available instore and online at furniture specialists Bridgman. Just head over to www.bridgman.co.uk or call 020 8804 7474.

DAD’S DIARY

In Partnership with

ENTERING FATHERHOOD

WITHOUT A MAP

M

y cousin popped round a few weeks ago and they proudly showed off their new offspring, who is only a couple of weeks older than Jake and so it was nice for them both to play with a child of similar age. Pretty soon though you can’t help but do that whole parent ‘top trumps’ conversation, “Teeth 4, steps 9, milk scoops 6”, “Ah, we have teeth 5, steps 7 and milk scoops 4”... And so it continues. It’s funny how newborns are referred to by stats even as soon as they arrive “So, how much did he weigh?” and it takes a good few weeks/months before they start getting described by personality “He smiles a lot… when passing wind... oh look he’s smiling now... great”. Jake himself is now 8 months old and is in full on biting mode, now he’s armed with teeth on both upper and lower gums and his particular preferences appear to be my laptop cable, my toes and George’s puzzle pieces. Many a time we have watched George gleefully finishing his puzzle only to ask curiously, “Dad, where is this piece?” pointing in a somewhat concerned manor to a gaping hole in the middle of his masterpiece “Me can’t find it”. It’s generally at that moment we will notice Jake is casually watching TV, whilst munching on the puzzle piece, smiling away and covering the thing in dribble. George squashes the piece down into place as it leaks saliva across to its bordering puzzle segments, “Me did it” he proudly says, whilst I look on disgusted at the thing. Aside from puzzles George’s throwing and catching are also getting better, but he’s not throwing

48

the balls I want him to throw, the soft foam ones. Instead he has found some back pain relief spikey rubber balls that he insists we do underarm to him to catch, yet he launches them overarm at our faces. I’ve taken a few to the chops whilst not even realising I was ‘playing catch’, I may be watching TV, eating dinner, or having a snooze on the couch, then ‘whack!’ a spikey ball thuds against my face, followed by the sound of laughter ringing through the air about half a second later. It’s awkward because

“He spent the next 2 hours tr ying to become an orpha n” I’m fully aware this is the kind of thing I used to do at his age and that I would also be finding it hilarious, yet being the parent on the receiving end is not as much fun. This ‘circle of life’ scenario has obviously been played out for generations and my only hope is that I get to watch my grandkids do this to their dad... He who laughs last and all that. It was Georges 3rd birthday this week and we took him to Kidspace in Romford where he spent the next 2 hours trying to become an orphan. It may be easy for him to squeeze through all these tunnels and sharp turns but I’m quite a large build and was having to throw kids to the side in order to keep up. I must have looked like some strange monster to any poor kid coming towards us, first they would see him swinging across ropes and over bouncing balls like some

mini Mowgli, then crashing through the carnage behind him was this big scary ogre yelling/panting “for the love of god, slow down!” and I saw him whiz off round a corner. Eventually I managed to coax him off with the promise of food “Me like strawberries” he said hopefully. I could barely see him at this stage as the sweat was cascading down my forehead, but we managed to make our way back to the table and both ate and drank. As soon as he’d finished he was running back into the madness, and I flung my cake into the air and gave chase. He was already climbing up through another inverted tunnel as I started to approach him, and then it happened... “Daddy, me need a wee”... “No George, no! Let’s get off first!!” I couldn’t turn around, as there was already a back log of kids behind me, “Daddy me done a wee” a large stream of urine began making its way towards me and my knees and socks took the full force of two Fruit Shoots. I trudged back to the seating area, with parents shielding their kids away from me as I left a smelly trail in my wake, all whilst holding George who was pushed towards my chest giving me a cuddle, further worsening my situation. He had a change of clothes, I had nothing. Nothing but shame and embarrassment. As we made our way home I felt like Stig of the Dump, all windows were open with the hope of letting out some of the stench, but my bad luck was completed when I found ourselves stuck in a traffic jam, in the sun, for over an hour. I can’t wait untll the boys have kids of their own! ...TO BE CONTINUED

CLUB FOCUS

LOUGHTON MOUNTAINEERING CLUB

L

oughton Mountaineering Club (LMC) was established in 1975 by a group of friends with a shared interest and passion for the outdoor environment. This ethos continues today, 40 years later, as the club provides a friendly and enjoyable environment for everyone to actively participate in outdoor activities including mountaineering, hill walking, scrambling, rock climbing and mountain biking and meet others with similar interests.

WHERE ARE THE MOUNTAINS? It’s the question we get asked the most, and it’s not surprising when the highest point in Epping Forest is 117m. The club runs monthly meets to the hills and mountains, alternating between North Wales, the Lake District or the Peak District.

WEEKENDS AWAY

Meets (weekends away) are held in climbing huts, often converted barns, or cottages. Located in inspiring places, we can go straight from the hut onto the hill each morning. The activities people do on the weekend will often be determined by the other people going, the area we are visiting and the weather. By booking climbing huts and catering as a group, the cost of a weekend away is £25 per person (for 2 nights accommodation, 2 breakfasts and 1 evening meal). Where possible we share cars, and costs are split between the people in each vehicle. LMC has about 35 members with a wide range of interest and abilities, so there is something organised to suit most people. We actively encourage members to plan their own events and recently

50

club members have planned invitation only trips to Scotland, the Alps, climbed the Matterhorn and climbed Mont Blanc.

LOCAL EVENTS

As well as weekends away, we have an annual calendar of events and activities that take place locally. Members are often out and about in Epping Forest, or at a climbing wall. We also meet monthly in a local pub, an opportunity to catch up with others and plan more adventures. Members are encouraged to plan their own activities using our email list to suggest walks, bike rides, or other socials.

JOINING LMC

LMC welcomes new members; outdoor enthusiasts involved in mountaineering, hill walking, rock climbing (and socialising). Joining LMC is a great way to meet others with a similar interest, develop and share skills, and enjoy the mountains with others. We encourage prospective new members to meet us locally and find out more about us and what we do, before coming on a weekend away. There is an annual membership fee, which includes BMC club affiliation. There is a wealth of experience in our membership and we are always happy to share our knowledge, we are an excellent place to trial your own skills. The club does not undertake to train members in any mountain activities, but members can point you in the direction of appropriate courses. www.loughtonmc.org loughtonmcsec@yahoo.co.uk @LoughtonMC /LoughtonMountaineeringClub
