This month we focus on local live music festivals, with events to suit a variety of tastes, and also provide some Father’s Day gift inspiration to treat your dad on June 19th. Personally I am looking forward to this Father’s Day with my two boys, and hope you all enjoy it too. For June our travel pages take us to the sunny Costa del Sol, so if you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet then be sure to take a look. We also have our regular charity feature, which this month showcases the fabulous work of The Children’s Trust, who help children with brain injury. Plus our usual mix of local news, event listings, fashion & beauty. Finally for anyone interested in sport, our club focus features the newly formed Chigwell Ladies Football Team. Enjoy the sun!

Both myself and my husband read it every month, and always find something of interest to us, and usually attend at least one of the featured events. Next week we are visiting Copped Hall and I have informed my daughter of the Learn to Fish Academy that was in your local news page and she plans to take my grandson. Keep up the good work. Kind Regards Genie Fisher

A short roundup of what’s been going on TOWN COUNCIL HOLDING EVENT TO CELEBRATE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY

(left to right) The Archdeacon of Harlow, the Venerable Rev Martin Webster, Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing, Bradley Walsh and Canon Rev Geoffrey Connor

EPPING FOREST MP ELEANOR LAING BACKS HEART OF EPPING PROJECT Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing has praised everyone involved with the Heart of Epping project to build a community centre adjoining St John’s Church in Epping. Mrs Laing was among more than 100 people who attended a reception and presentation hosted by television celebrity Bradley Walsh. Mrs Laing said: “I was delighted to hear that the project has now received its full planning approval and that every effort is now being made to get the ‘Heart of Epping’ development to its next stage. “St John’s Church is already quite literally at the heart of Epping and a community centre building adjoining the church will only further strengthen the church’s role as a focal point for the community in the town. “I thank everyone who has been involved with the Heart of Epping appeal so far, and wish them all the very best as the massive fundraising effort continues.” Bradley Walsh has said the Heart of Epping project will be a massive boost for the “sensational” St John’s Church and for the Epping community as a whole. The plans are for a community centre

adjoining St John’s Church providing community space, meeting rooms and a cafe. Funding has already been raised to cover the cost of preparing the project and getting it to the planning approval stage. Now the fundraising effort is focusing on raising £1m to build the facilities and an additional £1m to equip the new building. Bradley Walsh, the television actor, entertainer and presenter of The Chase quiz show and Tonight at the London Palladium, introduced various members of the church and local community who explained to the audience what the new Heart of Epping building will mean to them and the town. Mr Walsh, who is one of the patrons of the Heart of Epping appeal, said: “It’s something that this area has needed for a long, long time. “There are some of us here who won’t be here forever; that gives us a chance to leave a legacy. This is the hub of our community. “This place is sensational. When we get a community hall attached to the church, the church can only go one way, and that’s up and up and up.”

Cream teas and Prosecco cocktails will be on offer when Ongar Town Council and its Jubilee Park facilities celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. A special event is being held at the Love Lane venue from noon to 5pm on Saturday, 11thJune. There will also be a bouncy castle, Pimm’s tent, face painting, children’s activities, DJ and ice cream van. Council chairman councillor Jim Browning said: “This is a very special occasion and the council is pleased that Ongar is able to be part of the celebrations. “This event is open to all and I’m sure everyone will find something of interest and fun to do in celebrating this occasion. “We very much look forward to welcoming visitors to Jubilee Park.” For more information about the day contact the town council office on 01277 365348 (email clerk@ongar towncouncil.gov.uk) or ring the Jubilee Pavilion on 01277 363838.

ABBOTTS TRAVEL NAMED AS LONDON’S TOP TRAVEL AGENCY

Abbotts Travel has been named as London’s Top Travel Agency in a new power-list of the nation’s best agents. Abbotts Travel edged out competition from four other high street finalists in London to take the trophy. TTG’s Top 50 Travel Agencies list was revealed in a ceremony in Birmingham after an extensive judging process led by industry Bible Travel Trade Gazette, which saw agents rated by tour operators and other suppliers, and assessed by travel trade journalists. TTG editor Pippa Jacks said: “Our search for the nation’s best travel agents has taken us the length and breadth of the country, where we’ve uncovered countless stories of brilliant agents going the extra mile for their customers, giving great value, and serving their communities. “What our new Top 50 list shows is that travel retailing in 2016 is a vibrant and successful business sector, and that - particularly on the high street - agents continue to prove

STUDENTS TRY OUT NEW SPORTS

A group of King Harold Academy students attended a sports event at Debden Park High School where they could learn archery, judo and fencing. PE teacher Luke Andrew said: “This was a great opportunity for students to learn about different sports from the curriculum, some of which they were participating in for the first time. “They received coaching from experts who made the events very enjoyable for the students.” Students from Debden Park, Roding Valley, Davenant and West Hatch were also involved in the day on Friday 13th May.

their worth by delivering phenomenal customer service.” Abbotts Travel opened on George Lane in 1957, making it South Woodford’s oldest business. It is led by Julian Abbott, who followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father as owner. He is backed by highly experienced manager, Sharron Roat and a loyal and knowledgeable team. In 2013 the premises were significantly modernised and the company launched AbbottsTravel.com extending the personality and principles of the company beyond the physical store, to the world online. “ It’s great to be acknowledged, “says Julian Abbott, “and great for our local community in South Woodford to know that they have an award winning Travel Agent to come to rather than taking a chance by booking on the internet.” Abbotts Travel: 134 George Lane, South Woodford E18 1BA Tel: 0208 989 9445 Email: info@abbottstravel.com

SCHOOL’S ARSENAL STAR SUPPORTS CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH A group of former students who left Davenant Foundation School in 2010 continue to raise money in memory of their friend Peter Cross who, very sadly, died of leukaemia, aged 20. A special football match was organised between the school’s 1st XI and their 2010 counterparts organised and managed by exDavenant student and Arsenal player Carl Jenkinson. He and his friends pulled together their squad, publicised the match and have so far raised over £1,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The result of an entertaining match was a 3-1 victory for the Old Boys. The Davenant team represented themselves well and impressed Carl and his friends. Headteacher Chris Seward was pleased to give his permission for the match. He said: “Carl and his friends came to see me and asked if they could have a game in

memory of Peter Cross. They have such great memories of their school days and, in particular, of Peter and it was a pleasure to allow the event to happen.” The former students will continue to remember Peter and hope to have another game in his memory in the years ahead. LOCAL NEWS CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY WITH ESSEX AIR AMBULANCE!

Essex Air Ambulance is inviting everyone from across the county, looking to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, to host a Royal Afternoon Tea in her honour and help raise vital funds for their local Air Ambulance. Throughout June, the lifesaving charity is asking people to get out their best china sets, get baking and enjoy a cuppa with friends and family - all with a rather Royal theme. Sabi Blyth, Essex Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager said: “Afternoon Tea is such a fun thing to do and a great way to not only celebrate the Queen turning 90, but help keep the Air Ambulances flying too. “It costs around £500,000 every month to keep both of our helicopters flying so what are you waiting for, let’s bake and donate!” The Charity’s Royal Afternoon Tea initiative has been sponsored by Fulton’s Restaurants in Writtle and

Dunmow. Dean Sexton, Managing Director, Fulton’s Restaurants said: “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Queen turning 90 and to support our local Air Ambulance! We are a local family business and you’ll never know who will need to call upon this lifesaving service.” Everyone who hosts a Royal Afternoon Tea will be entered into a draw to win a specialist baking

hamper from W & H Marriages & Sons. You can get a FREE fundraising pack and royal decorations for the day by calling 0345 241 7690 or email AfternoonTea@EHAAT. uk.com. For more information on Essex Air Ambulance, visit EssexAirAmbulance.uk.com or follow us on Facebook for our latest news.

BSTK FESTIVAL

selling crafts, clothing, cultural items and most importantly records, so you can take some of the music home. Festival Director Dan Wiltshire, commented: “This year really is a big one for One Love Festival. Seven headliners across three days - it’s a first for us and the UK Reggae scene. I’m always looking to give One Love Festival fans something new and this year isn’t going to disappoint. The mighty Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Junior Reid, Big Youth, Half Pint, Kabaka Pyramid and Jah9 are going to be incredible.” Weekend tickets are £140 and Day tickets are £47.50 (+ £6 booking fee.) Hainault Forest Country Park, Chigwell, Essex IG7 4QN www.onelovefestival.co.uk

8th - 10th July BSTK Festival (formerly named Brownstock Festival) has fast become one of the UK’s most popular small festivals. See some of music’s biggest DJs and bands up-close and in a festival atmosphere rammed with personality and personal touches. They were shortlisted for “Best Small Festival” by The UK Festival Awards in 2013 and 2014 and for “Best Dance Event” in 2015. Last year saw the 11th festival since they launched with 150 people in 2005. The popularity of the event has grown enormously and they now see over 6000 visitors. The event organisers said: “We are super proud of our varied line up and entertainments across 6 stages, which we think makes sure Essex is firmly on the festival map. Beyond the main stage you can head to our huge Good Shed dance big top which has seen sets from some of the best DJs in the world. Meanwhile The Stumble Inn is strictly house music only. The rest of the festival is scattered with hand built areas and other entertainments.” This year’s headliners are Mark Ronson, Tinie Tempah, Kelis and Annie Mac, with Katy B, Scouting for Girls and Wretch 32 adding to the incredible line up of artists plus many more amazing acts. A standard weekend camping ticket costs just £89 or you can upgrade to VIP for £149, which is great value compared to other festivals of this quality. FINISH FLAWLESS

N

o longer the beauty secret of the A-list stars, airbrush make-up is now the preferred choice of make-up application by makeup professionals. I’ve teamed up with beauty professional Sarah Erotokritou at Finesse in Chingford who uses it everyday on clients. Airbase Make-Up is the perfect choice for a long-lasting, flawless makeover. It combines airbrush application with lightweight silicone foundation that will feel beautiful on your skin whilst nourishing it too. Sarah also finds the airbrushing technique to be more hygienic than other makeup application methods given that it doesn’t require touch (not to mention the trouble of brush cleaning). By spraying the product through an airbrush, it atomises the liquid into tiny particles promising to produce a flawless finish.

Could airbrushing be the secret to perfect foundation?

What are the benefits of Airbrushing? Airbrushing will always give you the best and most even coverage as it’s sprayed on with such small particles. You can build layers over more difficult areas and it will still give you a natural, flawless look. I love Airbrushing, as no matter how much I use, it never feels heavy and tacky. How long does Airbase Make-up last? Airbase Make-up will last all day. At Finesse we firstly use a primer on the skin, which works with the silicone base of the Airbase. Airbase Makeup is not water based so the skin will not absorb it and it’s not an oil base so it will not congest and slide off the skin. The silicone base has heat resistant properties, which will ensure that it stands up to the toughest conditions. It will stay perfectly flawless throughout the day. Is it ok for sensitive skin? Its great on sensitive skin as it doesn’t actually enter the pores. Airbase Make-up is also great for covering rosacea and other skin conditions that may cause skin sensitivity.

Can Airbase be used for contouring? Absolutely! We have 7 different foundation shades, 1 bronzer and 2 blushes, all of these products can be perfectly blended to everyone’s skin tone to produce a perfectly contoured face. How do you remove Airbase? As it is so long lasting, Airbase won’t just come off, but it is easy to remove. You can use standard make-up remover wipes or cleanser. What else will Airbase cover? Airbase is absolutely fantastic for coverage. It will cover acne, scarring, port wine stains and spots while still looking natural. It also covers tattoos! We achieve this using the ‘many fine layer’ technique. Spray a couple of layers with a light foundation and then spray the colourmatched foundation over the tattoo. By Amanda Anastasiou, If you would like to try Airbase Make-up, please visit www.finesse salon.co.uk

Using precise techniques Catherine can create or improve the shape and balance of your eyebrows; enhance the shape and definition of your eyes and repair years of over plucking.

Catherine will offer you a full eyebrow enhancement which consists of a thorough consultation where she can discuss and decide the perfect look for you. Your eye brows may need reshaping, defining, filling in, lifting, thickening or simply just enhancing. She will take accurate measurements in order to obtain symmetry. You may require the creation of an arch and fuller tails or a thicker bulb. The graceful arch of a brow is obtainable for everyone, with a little effort, concentration and teamwork. It is helpful to bring along pictures or magazine cuttings of your desired look, you may even wish to wear your normal daily make up in order for her to have a starting point. The procedure will commence with the creation of a template drawn onto the skin with a cosmetic pencil. She will then decide on the perfect colour pigment to use in order to compliment your colourings. The procedure normally takes roughly 2-3 hours. Pain management is a priority and anaesthetic is regularly re-applied for optimum client comfort. Once she has completed the procedure the client

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS C

Crofts Dental Practice - Smiling brightly in Epping rofts Dental Practice in Epping have been caring for Epping’s teeth for over 30 years. More recently under the management of owner and cosmetic dentist Dr Jazz Battu, the dental practice has gone from strength to strength and become a real success story among Epping’s local businesses. They continue to take on new patients, as well as providing excellent customer service and treatment to their existing patients. Furthermore, Dr Jazz Battu and the dentists of Crofts Dental Practice, welcome several patients from other practices in Essex for complex treatment such as Implants. Given their particularly excellent results in professional teeth whitening, Crofts Dental Practice has now been chosen as a Regional Centre of Excellence for one of the country’s leading whitening systems, Enlighten. It is one of the very few whitening systems in the world to guarantee a B1 result (enquire for more information). Working with Dr Jazz Battu, Enlighten hope to promote safe standards in whitening in Essex, offering patients long lasting, safe results. Why pay more? Dr Jazz Battu told us: “Though there are many places in Essex which offer cheap whitening, it is important to consult a dentist before having whitening done. For example, fillings and crowns won’t change colour, and also there may be underlying conditions with the teeth which actually appear worse after initial whitening. There are different types of gels which suit different situations, so it is really

important to get a proper consultation done first and X-rays to ensure there are no underlying small problems which can lead to painful problems if not treated before whitening. It may cost more to see a professional, but definitely worth the investment for results that will last. Our systems are designed to give a deep whitening result which leaves the teeth whiter, for longer”

The province has become a leading cultural destination thanks to the promotion of Picasso and his artistic legacy. Elsewhere, few destinations can boast such a wealth of history and heritage dating back thousands of years that has been preserved and maintained so well. Practically 80% of the Costa del Sol’s cultural heritage is concentrated

“The province has become a leading cultural destination thanks to the promotion of Picasso and his artistic legacy.” in three cities, which makes them must-sees. Ronda, Antequera and Malaga. That said, any white village or pueblo blanco in the province can provide you with a thoroughly enjoyable experience thanks to labyrinths of winding, whitewashed streets and charming old quarters. Thanks to the perfect climate (the average temperature, year round, is a very pleasant 20 degrees), the Costa del Sol has become a leading destination worldwide for golf. Many of the courses were designed by legends such as Seve Ballesteros. Sun and sand are essential parts of tourism here. From the east to the west coast, the diversity of beaches

Malaga has to offer results in landscapes as different as they are appealing. Beautiful, stunning cliffs on the eastern coast give rise to beaches of white sand on the more westerly coast, as well as busier city beaches with a host of amenities. All the coastal towns here have well-equipped beaches offering visitors a wealth of facilities. The province’s offerings, which are awarded with blue flags every year by the European Union, are a byword for tourist quality. Every one of the 103 villages has unique traditions that are well worth getting to know. Food festivals that sing the praises of local products,

religious pilgrimages and festivals whereby the patron saints leave their temples to go on procession through the streets and alleys and fairs bursting with colour that really showcase the most generous side of Malaga hospitality. We encourage community participation and welcome inclusion. Mencap’s Chair, Karen Fineberg observes, “Redbridge Mencap receives no funding from statutory authorities. We rely heavily on fundraising and donations and need to organise events on a regular basis if we are going to maintain our present level of services, and hopefully expand the range of activities provided for our members. ” Fundraising is an activity in which volunteers play a vital role and are needed to assist with organising and running fundraising events such as bingo evenings, concerts, cheese and wine evenings, table-top sales, discos, quiz nights, bingo nights, race nights amongst other events. Redbridge Mencap also runs a youth club and a social club for adult with learning disabilities, all of which provide interesting and challenging volunteering opportunities. The way ahead club supports adults with learning disabilities with craft activities, games and theme nights. this group was also set up to build and maintain friendships The club meets every Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm. ‘Our Club’ is a youth club meeting on Wednesdays for 13-19 year olds, empowering young people to make choices, take part in activities, build confidence and make friendships.

For children with brain injury

he Children’s Trust, established in 1984, is the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury. More than 40,000 children across the UK are left with a brain injury each year following an accident or illness. The Children’s Trust provides nursing care, therapy, rehabilitation and education to help children make the best recovery possible. Our national specialist centre in Tadworth, Surrey operates across 24 acres of beautiful grounds, providing an ideal home-fromhome environment for the children and families who come to us from across the UK. Specially equipped accommodation not only means that children can stay on site for the duration of their rehabilitation, but also enables families to be involved in their recovery. Expert therapists and medical professionals provide round-theclock care to help manage the effects of brain injury, which for many children can include learning how to walk, talk or swallow again safely. Also based at Tadworth is our School for Profound Education, providing a specialised curriculum for residential and day pupils with multiple learning difficulties and complex medical needs. We also run community-based rehabilitation services out of NHS major trauma centres across the country, supporting children upon their return

home from hospital with a confirmed or suspected brain injury. In addition, The Children’s Trust has an extensive research programme and offers online support for families nationwide John (left) and Josh (right) through our Brain Injury Hub. DAD’S DIARY

In Partnership with

ENTERING FATHERHOOD

WITHOUT A MAP

H

e’s persistently asking “why”, the dreaded word of any parent. I find myself going from casually asking if he’d like a sandwich to explaining advanced quantum physics in the space of a minute. A typical conversation tends to start like, “Oh look George, you need to wear a coat because it’s raining outside”, “Why?” “Well, erm, because the clouds have filled up with too much water”, “Why?” , “Erm... well the water cycle dictates that as the ground water evaporates and raises up into the clouds it accumulates at different levels of atmosphere where it eventually falls back to the earth as rain due to the gravitational pull”, “Why?”... “Oh, just put your bloody coat on!!” (you can guess his reply, and so it continues). The Mrs has come up with a better tactic, when he says “why?”, she replies with “Why do you think?”, this often stumps him, and more importantly gets his brain working as he tries to think of an answer. I tried asking her how she came up with it, but she just asked “Why?” so I decided to walk away. George’s mispronunciation of words continues to amuse, his younger brother Jake continues to be called “Cake” and whilst singing his favourite song (when Santa got stuck up the chimney) he appeared to sing about Santa having some seriously bad luck “My beard black, there’s s**t in my sack”. He keeps asking when Christmas will be and I guess that by continually singing festive songs he hopes to draw the event in quicker. Speaking of his younger brother, Jake is now crawling at some speed, and also attempting to fly. When you sit him down, he initially smiles broadly and starts flapping his arms and pumping his legs back and forth, yet when the lack of desired elevation appears to have been acknowledged he decides to swivel round to all fours

56

and propel himself into overdrive. Each obstacle he encounters then turns into an opportunity for him to climb up and stand, whether it be a plant, a chair or your leg. Once standing, the biting, slapping and dribbling techniques are unleashed with a vengeance and in just a few agonising seconds your healthy leg can resemble something thrown into a tank of piranhas, then in the style of Keyser Soze “he’s gone” (for any fans of ‘The Usual Suspects’ out there). You can usually find him again gnawing on a table leg, or eating the leaves of a plant, like a ravenous koala bear. Thankfully the lawn is quite

“Daddy! Me need a poo!” overgrown and I’ve run out of baby food... two birds with one stone. The second part of this month’s Dad’s Diary is solely devoted to a rather harrowing bike ride. I’d decided to take George out for a short ride on my bicycle, I’d connected a child seat on the back and secured his crash helmet on tight, we rode off into the fields. After a few minutes I realised that going uphill, with a child on the back, constantly asking “why?” about everything was becoming a little tedious, so we decided to pull over and get some shade under a rather large tree. “Look Daddy, me can climb the tree!” I looked up to see him hugging a tree so vast that he simply had both his arms outstretched like straight rods, you could have placed a spirit level across his shoulders. “Can me climb it?” I looked at the thing and could imagine seasoned climbers turning back down after the first mile (it was truly colossal and seemed to disappear into the heavens

like something from Jack and the beanstalk) “No George, you can’t climb it”, “Why?” I had no time for this and decided it best we continue our journey, yet as I placed him back into his seat the cry went up, “Daddy! Me need a poo!!” It was loud enough to make the birds fly from the trees and I had to think fast. He’s out of nappies and I’d set off with minimal essentials (although judging by the trees he wants to climb perhaps abseiling equipment would have been handy). I found an old newspaper and stood him on it, immediately realising that any evacuations would be drooped straight into his waiting pants around his ankles, I urgently needed to re-position him. I lifted him to the front of the paper, then pulled him back over it, so his feet remained near the front, but now his unloading section hovered gently above the centre of the drop zone (I’m running out of euphemisms here). As his cross-eyed face began to go red the action had begun, we were doing this and I held him firmly. He seemed to be challenging the spirit of the tree because it was an absolute log that appeared to be coming out of him. I thought to myself “Christ, that was big!” but little did I know it was just the first half. I can only apologise for the visual crudity of this story, but it happened, and this is parenthood. Every parent out there will know what it’s like to dangle a child at a rakish angle in order to help them go to the toilet, whether it’s by a roadside, or next to an incredibly large tree. Somewhat coincidentally he’d produced what looked like a festive yule tide log, and as I excruciatingly wrapped the sides of the newspaper around it I was glad that I shouldn’t be seeing one for another 6 months! ...TO BE CONTINUED

CHIGWELL LADIES FOOTBALL TEAM

C

higwell Ladies is a newly formed team consisting of a mix of new players and half of Walthamstow Eagles, a team that folded at the end of last season. We play in Division 1 of the Essex New tracksu Woman’s Football League. Most of its courtesy of Th the girls from Walthamstow wanted e Crown and Crooked Billet to continue playing and Chigwell FC were kind enough to take us on as a new team, Chigwell Ladies. Half of the team have been playing together for years and the new players have fitted in really well. We came third in the league this season which is a great achievement for our first season! Coming third in our first season warm up ch at m re P has set the bar high, so we have high hopes (and Chigwell FC has high expectations) for next season. The players have agreed to continue training through the summer, which shows their dedication, and we are going for gold next year and hope to win the league and get promoted to the Premier Division. We will be entering in the League Cup and the Essex County Cup as well so who knows, we could win the treble. Our training sessions are at 8pm Day out to w atch every Thursday at Power League Leyton Orient in Fairlop and we play our games

there at 2pm on a Sunday, we always welcome supporters! All the girls do their best to get to every game and every training session and they have all become good friends and socialise together which makes a great team bond (and sometimes shared team hangover on a Sunday). Chigwell Ladies is sponsored by the Crown and Crooked Billet in Woodford, you can often see some of the ladies in there for dinner or drinks. Chigwell FC has teams that range from Under 6 to Under 18 and they have mixed teams up to the Under 13’s. Any girls or boys, men or women that are interested in coming along to a training session with the view of joining, go on our website or you can tweet us. New players are always welcome, the ladies team have found it especially difficult to find a goalkeeper last season after our previous one left to have a baby. All of the teams are always looking for new talent. If you are interested in coming to a training session you can find our contact details on the club’s website. www.chigwellboysfc.co.uk @chigwellboys or @chigwellladies
