KING HAROLD ACADEMY STUDENTS VOTE FOR CHANGE
Year 7 to 10 students at King Harold Academy experienced a taste of democracy when they voted for new tutor group names to start in the new academic year. The Student Voice, which regularly meets to discuss school issues, met with Head of School Kim Thackray and provided a shortlist of names based on famous British people. The 13 names - including literary greats, scientists, sportsmen, and key political figures were - Attenborough, Austen, Brunel, Churchill, Darwin, Dickens, Hawking, Pankhurst, Potter, Redgrave, Rowling, Shakespeare and Tolkien. Students were provided with ‘official’ ballot papers and information and books on the famous British personalities to help them make an informed choice. School librarian Giselle Morris transformed the Learning Resource Centre into a polling station where students placed their votes in the ballot box. Hundreds of votes were received and the results of the top four final names will be announced at the end of term.

RHS HYDE HALL TO HOST FIRST SURREY SCULPTURE TRAIL One of the most renowned regional arts organisations in the country, the Surrey Sculpture Society, will be bringing the works of their talented emerging and professional sculptors to a new area and new audience, with a sculpture trail leading visitors through the rolling landscape at RHS Garden Hyde Hall near Chelmsford, Essex, one of the finest gardens in the East of England. The Sculpture Trail will open to the public on 19th July and run until 14th August and will give visitors to RHS Garden Hyde Hall the opportunity to discover a range of sculptures in diverse garden settings including the hilltop, dry and woodland gardens and in other locations around the garden, with all sculptures for sale. RHS Garden Hyde Hall is the second RHS Garden to host a Surrey Sculpture Society exhibition. The society has held seventeen annual sculpture trails at RHS Garden Wisley - an unbroken record of success. Henriette Van der Does, Chair of the Surrey Sculpture Society commented: “Our members are very excited about
holding this new exhibition at RHS Garden Hyde Hall and to build on the success of our RHS Garden Wisley exhibition. The combination of the natural beauty of the RHS gardens with the many and varied sculptures, at affordable prices, is a winning formula and will give visitors the opportunity to see how sculpture can enhance any garden. We all feel very fortunate to have this joint collaboration with RHS Garden Hyde Hall and we hope it will be the first of many future exhibitions.” Ian Le Gros, Head of Site at Hyde Hall said: “We’re delighted to welcome the Surrey Sculpture Society to Essex. STUDENTS DISPLAY ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY WORK
Year 7 students at Debden Park High School, Loughton, took part in a sponsored 5km run to raise money for Skillforce and Cancer Research. The event was a part of the Skillforce programme that 12 students are taking part in. The programme involves developing lifelong skills to aid them through various challenges of life. Activities have included a BMX workshop, First Aid course and navigation course along with
organising the 5km run. KS3 Progress Co-ordinator Merys Rees said: “The students were dedicated, enthusiastic and motivated during the run and their passion towards both causes were clearly seen. It was fantastic to see every Year 7 student taking part, working together and celebrating their success as a year group.” Each student received a medal and certificate.
Students at Roding Valley High School, Loughton, have displayed the art and photography work which they have been working on for the past 18 months. The exhibition featured their coursework, their exam final pieces and all of their preparatory sketchbooks. Head of Art David Tisdale said: “We have such a broad range of materials, techniques and scales this year including ceramics, pen, pencil drawing, painting, collage and assemblage. “Each piece of work is individual, experimental and exciting, with some of the students producing work which wouldn’t be out of place in any A-Level exhibition.” He added: “This year, for the first time, we also exhibited the work of our A-Level artists and photographers. This turned out to be of great benefit for our GCSE students as they could see the difference in scale and skill required for this higher level of study.” Many pieces from the exhibition will be displayed at Loughton Arts Centre, High Road, Loughton, until Friday, 8th July.

CHARITY SUPPORTER RAISES OVER £600 WITH PERSONAL BEST 10K RUN TIME

A supporter of The Dream Factory charity raised over £600 when he completed the Vitality London 10k run. Jason Digwa, director of the RGB electrical superstore in Ilford - which supports the charity - achieved a personal best time of 57.55 mins. The event attracted more than 15,000 runners of all abilities. Jason, from Chigwell, said: “Luckily conditions on the day were great and all the pre-training paid off. I chose to run for The Dream Factory as it is a great local charity that supports young terminally ill children by granting them wishes.” The Dream Factory founder Avril Mills said: “Our thanks go to Jason for choosing The Dream Factory and raising money for us which will go towards the cost of granting even more dreams for children and young people with life-limiting conditions.”

RETIRING HEADTEACHER WILL MISS DAVENANT’S “INSPIRATIONAL” YOUNG PEOPLE
The Headteacher of Davenant Foundation School retires this month after fifteen years at the helm. Chris Seward started at the Loughton school in September 2001, having previously been Headteacher at a school in Hertfordshire. His retirement will mark the end of a 39-year teaching career which began as a History teacher at a comprehensive school in Ealing, West London. Mr Seward said: “It has been great to maintain a really high and consistent level of achievement across a whole range of activities. It is not just academic success that we value at Davenant - it is as important to see students developing themselves through sport, music and the arts. “For me it’s about consistent achievement in exams and a consistent commitment to a broad curriculum with a wide range of opportunities for our students. Developing and maintaining this level throughout the whole period has been a tremendous satisfaction.” Mr Seward singled out many highlights of his time in charge at Davenant including the school’s music tours to Italy and the visit of many

high-profile figures to Davenant among them Lord Falconer, England women’s cricketer Lydia Greenway, Paralympian Hannah Cockroft and seated volleyball player Martine Wright. However, just as important have been the individual successes he has seen with students over the years. Mr Seward said he would miss the many “inspirational” young people who have regularly surprised and impressed him during his time at Davenant. He said: “They are a wonderful group who bring a richness of diversity and experience to the school. “I will certainly miss my colleagues with whom I have really enjoyed working but what is unique about a school is the young people. It is the day-to-day experience of working with the young people that I will miss most of all.” Mr Seward’s successor at Davenant is Adam Thorne who is currently Headteacher at a school in Havering. Mr Seward said: “I’m already working with Mr Thorne to ensure there is a good transition and he’s able to make a successful start in September.”
LOCAL NEWS WEST HATCH HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GO UNBEATEN IN TAG RUGBY COMPETITION
Year 7 and Year 8 girls at West Hatch High School combined to form a formidable team which was undefeated in the Barking Tag Rugby competition organised by the RFU. The girls’ results included 7-1 and 5-0 victories. Maddie Fitch, who plays for Eton Rugby Club, scored seven tries while her sister, Amy - who is also with Eton - scored four tries. The Year 7s also showed their worth as Isobel Smith scored three tries against schools such as Sydney Russell and Jo Richardson. This was the first time the year groups had played together as a team and they gelled straight away.Lily Wagstaff captained the team on the day and showed great leadership skills helping the Year 7s and organising the team. Kiera Carroll and Jodie Verghese were triumphant in moving the ball forward drawing the opposition in. Regular training attendees Tilly Mae Kent and Faye Plunger (Year 7)
held their own, making crucial tags and supporting the girls.Making her first appearance, Maya Matias kept West Hatch in the game at one point with her rapid speed to stop the opposition scoring at the last minute. Each girl played their part and really enjoyed the experience.

The Epping Ongar Railway is a great day out - with friendly volunteers, steam locomotives, buses and a wave from the signalman as the train leaves, the railway offers you the chance to experience life as it might have been 50 years ago. The extension from Loughton to Ongar was built 150 years ago and later it became the eastern end of the Central Line. In 1994 London Underground stopped running services east of Epping. Since then the railway has been lovingly restored with the help of hundreds of keen and friendly volunteers to the fantastic attraction it now is - a heritage railway running steam and diesel trains through 6 miles of the Essex countryside. Trains run to within 100m of the boundary with LU

The Annual Theydon Bois Donkey Derby - celebrating its 29th year - takes place on Sunday 10th July, raising money for the Theydon Bois Scouts & Guides and other local youth groups. It regularly attracts 4,000 visitors and this year is supported by main sponsor Stevenette Estate Agents. Held on the village green and running from 12noon to 4pm, the Theydon Bois Donkey Derby is a perfect slice of Essex village summer life, featuring bouncy castles, candy floss and face painting for the kids, an old fashioned big wheel and dodgems for the big kids, hog roast, BBQ, a Tea Tent, and various other hot and cold refreshments. Other events and attractions include a fastest tennis serve contest, a ‘Smash the Crocs’ stall, a Popchoir recital and a drill demonstration by Chigwell Squadron Air Cadets and much, much more... and of course, donkey races and rides! njoy the next few summer months in your garden. Take plenty of time out to just sit outside to admire the flowers and look out for the wildlife on these dry, warm, lovely days that are on the way.
SAVE YOUR SEEDS
Give annual flower seed saving a go! Choose seeds from Marigolds or Petunias. Start by finding a dead flower. The Petunia seeds are located in a seedpod called the calyx which is at the base of the flower. You can wait until the flower dies and falls off. As the calyx swells with seeds it will begin to turn brown and then it will split open. Inside
the pod you will see the seeds that will look like tiny dark balls. If you don’t want to wait until the dead

Toads can be a variety of colours from dark brown to green and sandycolours too. They have broad bodies and warts on their skin. You will see that they walk rather than hop. They secrete an irritant substance from their skin and puff themselves up to deter predators. They tend to live away from water and feed on insect larvae, spiders, and worms. You will usually see them at night or sometimes in the daytime after it has Common Toad rained.
PESTS AND DISEASE
If your plants are wilting check for vine weevils. Adult vine weevils are black and about 1cm long. They lay their eggs in soil which hatch into white, C-shaped grubs that feed voraciously on the roots of your plants. Use a biological control method called Nemasys, it contains microscopic creatures called nematodes that are a natural enemy of vine weevils. The product is available from garden centres but it must be kept in a fridge. Vine Weevil

A review of Epping’s new restaurant

W
e arrived just a day after the main opening and the restaurant was buzzing. This really is the place to be seen right now, wall to wall with guests who were looking smartly dressed and glamourous. It was 8pm on a Friday night, and it felt like we had taken a trip up to the west end of London, yet here we were, on Epping High Street. The lights were soft, the décor was classy, and the staff were superb. We made our way to the bar and the mixologist gave us two of the nicest cocktails we’ve ever had, firstly ‘Epping’s Ex’ – made with: Lychee liquor, Frangelico, lemon juice, fresh ginger, fresh mint and ginger ale, whilst I went for ‘The Essex’ which included: Whisky, Champagne, peppermint syrup, Angostura bitter and lemon. Sipping these at the bar allowed us a little time to people watch, seeing the new entrants being greeted at the door, some then moving into the lounge bar near the front of the restaurant, whilst others went straight through to join up with

friends already at their tables. The place was really busy and had a lovely, friendly feel about it. It felt like it was going to be a great night out. We finished the drinks and headed over to our table. The menu is predominately Turkish, with a pleasing amount of dishes from other parts of the Mediterranean too, for added variety. For starters we opted for: Tiger Prawns au Gratin and Roasted Goats Cheese with Walnuts. The prawns were huge and meaty, draped in a succulent amount of creamy melted gruyere cheese. Service was a little slow at this point in truth, but this was understandable due to the fact it was a new team, and clearly the place was very busy. For our mains we went with a Chicken Beyti, a Pivaz Mixed Kebab, and sides of Sautéed Spinach with Pine Kernals and Pan Fried Garlic Mushrooms. This was truly delicious! The dish was filled with a good portion of food, not a small pretentious underwhelming amount as in some restaurants, but was instead a sumptuous assortment of chicken
shish, lamb shish, Adana, chicken wings, and a lamb chop. All the meats had been individually cooked to perfection, each juicy and flavoursome as the knife glided through. My guest went for the Chicken Beyti and was equally impressed, this was minced chicken, flavoured with garlic, hot pepper, parsley and pistachio and then grilled on a skewer. Although nearly full we decided we should go the full distance and ordered desserts, this time we tried the Berry Cheesecake and the Chocolate Fondant - warm, soft, chocolate sponge which oozed with liquid chocolate when it was broken into. All in all this was a lovely evening out, certainly one for special occasions, but the relaxed atmosphere means this can also be a very fine and regular dining experience for all the lucky locals. I
won’t lie, this job can be great... getting to try food at various restaurants, but after a while it can all become quite similar, however well it’s cooked. That’s why I was delighted to try something different from the average high street cuisine, and jumped at the chance to sample the new Brazilian street food lunch menu at Las Iguanas in Lakeside. With the Olympic Games about to launch in Rio we thought we ought to dine with our South American cousins and try something from across the Atlantic, after all, we all know Brazil, but there’s not many outlets here selling Brazilian food. So... what’s it like? Well, it’s certainly got a ‘street’ feel about it, most of the new dishes were hand held, bite-sized, deliciously created and full of flavour. We started with some ‘Dadinhos’, cubed smoked cheese with a sweet and sticky, chilli jam, and some classic quesadillas - a folded tortilla with chicken, onions and cheese. These were snack type lunch food, but so very different from everything else on the high street, and they tasted lovely.

The brahma beer was cool and refreshing as our mains arrived, 3 new dishes to the lunch menu: Havana Club & BBQ Glazed Pork Ribs (Half a rack of fall off the bone pork ribs covered in a sticky rum glaze, topped with crispy onion & chilli, served with slaw & your choice of fries, sweet potato mash), The Cuban Sandwich (Roast pork belly, pulled pork, Emmental cheese & ham with sweet mustard & green pickle relish in a bun) and finally the Pan Fried Pescado (Sustainable white fish marinated with lime & artichoke, pan-fried & served on roasted sweet potato mash and topped with a piquanté pepper dressing & sweet potato crisps). The glazed pork fell off the bone, it was cooked perfectly, tender, and juicy. The fish was also superb, very fresh and the lime really lifted the flavour, a perfect healthy mid-day pick me up, however the ‘crisps’ could have been a bit more crispy. The Cuban Sandwich was a mixed affair, I couldn’t fault the pulled pork, again this had been carefully cooked, but unfortunately the bun was not given the same care and had
been microwaved into a hard, chewy dough. This was only downside of a thoroughly enjoyable main meal. We ordered cocktails before our desserts and it was another triumph for the menu, we enjoyed a two for one vanilla Mai Thai - Havana Club Especial rum, Absolut vanilla vodka, lime juice, almond syrup & bitters - superb! For desserts we found some space to share the new Mojito Jelly and the Macadamia Cheesecake. The cake was rich and gooey with the sauce; it was very indulgent and tasted delicious, whilst the Mojito Jelly gave a light, refreshing zing to round off what had been a thoroughly enjoyable lunch. I’d certainly go back to Las Iguanas and would fully recommend it for many reasons, firstly the food is different to the standard high street offering, much of it is snack sized allowing you to sample a wide variety without feeling bloated, it’s very reasonably priced, the drinks are fantastic, the service was friendly, plus we’re about to go Rio crazy with the Olympics starting! www.iguanas.co.uk

ambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning is a registered charity and one we call our ‘54 acre classroom’. Situated on Manor Road, just 100ft up the hill from the Miller and Carter pub, our Centre boasts a variety of adventurous and team building activities such as climbing, caving, kayaking and archery, as well as a farm education barn and dedicated environmental areas. We
use these activities to put together bespoke programmes for young people to build their self-esteem, confidence, and personal and social skills. We work with recognised groups such as schools, youth organisations, churches etc. from across Essex, East London and further afield. We also work with individuals who can be referred onto specific projects we run, such as Hands On Animal Care and
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED On Sunday 11th September 2016 we are opening our gates to the public for you to come and have a go at our activities yourselves! No booking necessary, just turn up anytime from 11am (gates close at 4pm, so last entry is usually around 3pm). Activities are just £1.50 per go or you can buy a £12/6 wristband for unlimited tries. We ask politely for a £3 donation upon entry as all funds raised are put towards our personal development programmes of outdoor learning. e recently enrolled George for football training sessions in North Weald, he has been kicking a ball around the front room for some time and in the personal interests of protecting our home we decided to take this activity into a supervised outdoor environment. The four of us initially went into town to buy him a little football kit, Jake liked the taste of most options as he promptly signalled his approval with various degrees of saliva. Finally we were ready and the next day we rocked up to Shooters. He ran onto the astro turf and immediately started roaring like a lion, hands clawed up into the air whilst the other kids looked on. I offered some words of encouragement from the side-lines, “Come on George, stop doing that, can you kick the ball into the.....”, “ROOOAAARRR!!!!” I’d been publically cut off and drowned out. Jake was just watching on, laughing hysterically and clapping like a seal at feeding time. George, noticing this, took his animal impressions to the next level. Over the next 20 minutes we were treated to: frogs, kangaroos (both hopping of course) sheep, elephants, crocodiles and eventually a bee. Eventually Jakes’ laughter was starting to wear him out and began to slow down, eventually falling asleep. It was at this point George turned to the rest of the group and decided his matinee performance had finished, it was time for the main event, he was about to become a footballer. At this point the coach was doing a simple communication exercise, the kids (all 3-5 years old) would chase him, and when he yelled freeze they would stop with their arms out. Simple enough I thought,

“Go on George, chase him, then stop like a star shape when he says freeze!” The instructions had been passed across, the 3 of us watched on as the coach began jogging and George began chasing along with the rest of the group. “Freeze!” came the cry and in pure unison each child froze perfectly like a statue, each with their arms out stretched... Every child except one. Laughing and yelling he ran past the static children (each with a face of pure bafflement) and meandered his way up to the coach, hitting him on the bottom with a big slap, yelling “Got you!!” and then
“Fell into an uncontrollable fit of laughter.” unleashing a mighty lions roar. Jake had woken up and fell into an uncontrollable fit of laughter. This routine repeated itself 6 or 7 times, and eventually the coach decided it was time for penalties. Now, at this stage I need you to visualise the size of this astro turf pitch in relation to the size of the children, for them it would be like a full size football field, their little legs running around trying to cover the ground as best they can. So, as I say, it’s penalties. The coach places the ball on the spot about 5 foot from the goal, a couple of feet behind the ball is a queue of eager kids all looking to score one by one. The coach calls up each parent to go in goal for their own child and they all feign an attempt at saving the ball but ultimately let it roll through their legs or something similar. After a few more children its George’s turn, my Mrs and Jake are watching by the side as
George took a few steps back to start his run up, “Come on then George, can you score against me?!” Looking focused he kept edging backwards, any minute now he will begin his run I’m thinking, shall I dive the other way? Shall I let it roll under my legs? If it goes wide shall I accidentally kick it in for him? Whilst all these scenarios are going through my head I’ve noticed he’s now about 80 foot from the goal, standing at the other end of the pitch, in the opposite goal! “George!!” I yell, “come on!!” with that he takes the longest run up known in football history, twice he stops for a breather, when he eventually reaches me a lot of the other children have left for the day and I’m sporting a rather unruly beard, then inches from the ball he flings he right foot forward with such gusto he launches himself into the air (still smiling broadly) and lands back down on the ball. Unflinching he dusts himself off and tries again, this time striking the ball, at some speed towards me, leaving me unable to sportingly dive out of the way in time. It hits me on the thigh and I can hear the remaining parents groaning “Fancy that, wouldn’t even let his poor boy score a goal” as I go to protest my innocence George runs closer and smashed the rebound straight into the goal “Well done George that was brilliant”. Exited he turns around in order to start another 80 foot run up, but thankfully I manage to stop him in time. That night he couldn’t stop talking about his goal, and went to bed holding a football. I just hope he didn’t spend half the night doing another 80 foot run up in his dreams! ...TO BE CONTINUED

REDBRIDGE SPORTS AND LEISURE BADMINTON CLUB

n 1972 when Norman Booth and a group of friends came together to build a community centre for them to play tennis; could they have imagined that 44 years later the centre would be home to over 400 clubs, ranging from Tennis to Boxing; from Gymnastics to Squash. Yes 44 years later and the seams of Redbridge Sports and Leisure are bursting with activities for all ages, genders and abilities. One of our very popular clubs is our Badminton Club, which was created for lovers of badminton to come together. Over the years the Badminton Club has expanded to accommodate the increasing demand for youth and adult tournaments and sessions. Under the guidance of Martin Lawrence; Badminton Development Officer, the Badminton Club thrives.
CLUB SUCCESS
Open tournaments see all players able to enter, whereas from September through to April, the tournaments are graded Gold, Silver and Bronze and players can only enter tournaments that are at their grading. The Kent U16 Open saw Akhil Pillai add to his impressive season’s haul of medals with a gold in the boys doubles. At the same tournament, Vidhi Garg won a bronze medal in the girls’ doubles. The Essex U12 and U14 Opens took place at Redbridge Sports and Leisure on 15th May 2016 and the local players won a total of 8 medals. Liam Purton won gold in the U12 boys doubles after winning
a bronze in the U14 boys singles. Kiera Dennis-Nelson won the girls doubles gold, beating PC colleagues Alicia Chu and Shreeya Mehta in the final. Shreeya won her second silver medal of the day in the girls singles event. Arushi Agrawal won silver in the U14 girls single consolation event. Rosie Allen has continued to collect medals in the senior tournaments. At the recent Loughborough Senior bronze event Rosie won gold in the girls doubles.
REDBRIDGE BADMINTON PLAYERS THROUGH THE 100 MARK FOR THE SEASON
The badminton players from Redbridge Sports & Leisure won their 100th gold medal for the season at the Forza event held at the centre on last month. The players have beaten last season’s tally for gold medals already and with a handful of tournaments left this season, their sights are set on last season’s total of 256 medals.
