PREMIER LAWN CARE COMPANY LAUNCHES NEW ‘MAKEOVER’ SERVICE
Ant Middleton braves Haven House ‘Chilly Dip’
Britain’s premier lawn care company has just launched a unique ‘Makeover’ service to give consumers in the Barnet and Chigwell area the perfect patch – without the hassle of re-turďŹ ng.
TV tough guy Ant Middleton was among 15 participants to take part in Haven House Children’s Hospice’s ‘Chilly Dip’ at Hampstead Heath Lido on Sunday 4th February.
GreenThumb’s Lawn Makeover programme guarantees exceptional service to create a wonderful lawn – at a fraction of the cost of laying new turf.
The ultimate action hero, famous for fronting SAS: Who Dares Wins, Mutiny and Escape braved the winter chill and dipped into the lido as part of its ďŹ rst #Team15 challenge event which raised almost ÂŁ2,000 for the hospice as it celebrates its 15th birthday in 2018.
Its Makeover is unique, says the company, because as well as killing and completely removing worn-out grass, choking moss and problem weeds, its expert staff re-seed the clean soil with an exclusive grass seed mix, top-dress with recycled, organic and sustainable compost to nourish its growth, and then make aftercare visits.
Ant was on hand to get everyone ďŹ red up for the challenge which involved swimming one length of the pool. The water temperature was a chilly 5 Celsius.
Barnet and Chigwell’s GreenThumb branch owner, Bryan Horsley, says the Makeover is ideal for new or existing customers in older or new-build properties, who want to replace old, dying or poor-quality turf full of coarse or weed-grasses, with the most luxurious, green and weed-free lawn possible. Mr Horsley says: “With at least 15,000 lawn treatments a year, our 3,200 customers are amazed at the 'miracles' – in their own words – our professional lawn operatives can perform. This Makeover is our biggest and best yet!â€? Mr Horsley, who has been running the branch since 2008, says: “Re-turďŹ ng is often the ďŹ rst thought – but our Makeover is far superior and saves you around 50%. Based on an average lawn size of 160m (approx. 190yards) it’s around ÂŁ8 per square metre. Larger lawns are even less per square metre.â€? 6HL?HFGK?GL IJJF6C@=-L/KIFJGL L3CE8>JBB +HILKL+IJJ9LFH H-BE8KGEHFL*K>FL2K5JH JI K;;HEFG=JFGLKFALO@HGJ9L?KBBL04 0 L ! Along with cheering on each participant Ant completed two lengths of the pool and gave everyone a signed certiďŹ cate, medal and selďŹ e. Participants had the opportunity to warm up in the poolside sauna and enjoy hot refreshments. Ant Middleton said: “I was delighted to take part in the Chilly Dip and help raise funds for Haven House in its 15th birthday year. The hospice provides such vital care to children and their families in the local area. I was really impressed with the enthusiasm shown by all those who turned up. The water was very cold, but everyone did exceptionally well and I’m glad to be part of Team15.â€? Nathan Ramsden, North London Community Fundraising Executive at Haven House, said: “We are so grateful to Ant Middleton and all of our supporters for taking part in our ďŹ rst Team 15 challenge event for 2018.There was a wonderful atmosphere and Ant was brilliant in getting everyone ďŹ red up and into the pool. This is the second time we have staged a Chilly Dip in North London and it was great to see so many people raising funds for local life-limited children and their families. We hope more people will be encouraged to be part of our Team 15 and take on a challenge for Haven House in our 15th birthday year. Whether you’re a runner, swimmer, cyclist, trekker or adrenalineseeker, we really do have something for everyone for all ďŹ tness levels.â€? GUIDE DOGS IN ESSEX RECRUITING VOLUNTEER SIGHTED GUIDES
The charity Guide Dogs in Essex h has llaunched hed a social media campaign to recruit volunteers who could help guide people who are visually impaired and blind. An emotionally charted 3 minute Facebook video aims to promote the charity’s My Guide Service. It shows how My Guide Partnerships are transforming the lives of people living with sight loss. The charity says it has 36 people waiting for life-changing volunteers to help them get out of their home to access the communities we all belong to. Guide Dogs Herts, Beds and Essex My Guide Ambassador Helen Rowe says: “It’s such a wonderful, rewarding thing to do, to be able to help someone do something that sighted people take for granted.” She added: “We’re calling for anyone who can spare 2-3 hours per week to help us change a life.” My Guide Service User and Guide Dogs Engagement Officer Siobhan Meade says: “It’s given me the confidence to get out while I’m waiting to train with my third guide dog. “As a totally blind person, My Guide has really supported me to get out in to the community again after my second guide dog retired in October 2016. While the dedicated mobility team work hard to match me with a suitable guide dog, the My Guide Service has stepped in and ended the helplessness I felt, confined to my home.” She added: “No words can describe the difference My Guide makes to the life of a person who is blind or visually impaired. Please help us end isolation.” 6CJLM E+G)+6E=JL2:L @EAJL1JI E?JL EAJHL?KFL-JL EJ>JALHFLGCJL @EAJ H8DL.JIGD9L/JADLKFAL7DDJ L(K?J-HH5L;K8J +K?-JHH5<?H=N @EAJ H8D'*#

THE LONGEST EASTER EGG HUNT IN ESSEX! In 1994 the last ever Central Line service ran from Epping to Ongar. This quirky part of the Central Line was originally built in 1865 as an extension from Loughton. It became part of the Underground in the 1940s running ďŹ rst with steam and then electric services from 1957. After a number of attempts, services were ďŹ nally withdrawn in 1994. In May 2012 the present owners, Epping Ongar Railway, opened again with the aim of running an impressive and attractive heritage railway and tourist attraction. PESTS & DISEASE Vine weevil feed on roots causing the plant to die. The vine weevil can infest many plants by eating their leaves. To get rid of these garden pests in a non-chemical way just pick the adults off during the early evenings You can also trap adults with sticky barriers around pots and encourage their natural predators into your garden which include birds and hedgehogs.
WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON A SEASONAL GUIDE TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GARDEN. 6CEDL8KIAJFEF8L=HFGCLH+L2KI?CL>EBBL-IEF8 =KF:LAK:DL+EBBJAL>EGCL@F;IJAE?GK-BJ >JKGCJI<L6CJIJL=K:L-JLIKEF9LDGIHF8L>EFAD KFAL=EBAJILAK:DLGHH<L Try not to be seedling planting shy, instead be brave and open up a packet of seeds and sow them. Be sure to have a fleece handy to cover up your vulnerable plants should you hear of an overnight frost. Primula vulgaris can now be seen in full bloom. These wild flowers are pale yellow with a deep yellow centre. Now is the time to begin removing moss and weeds from your paths and driveways. This may seem like a boring task but by doing it now it will make light work later on. Look out for special offer deals on plug plants because now is the perfect time to order them. You don’t even need a greenhouse to grow them on. Just a sunny back bedroom or kitchen windowsill will be fine. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PLUG PLANTS ARRIVE:
: As soon as you receive plug plants
through the post you should pot them up immediately.
: If you have to delay for a few day’s keep
them in a cool, bright and well ventilated place.
: Soak the plug tray in water for at least 10 minutes before planting, this will soften the compost.
: Plant the plug plants individually into 5cm
pots using multi-purpose compost, place a few slow release pellets into the soil too. If you decide to use trays leave a 5cm spacing between each plug plant to allow for growth.
WILDLIFE WATCH Slow worms have long, smooth, shiny, grey or brown bodies and look very similar to tiny snakes. They are legless lizards and are quite harmless. They like humid conditions and usually appear from their hiding places after heavy rain to hunt for food.
: Simply make a hole in the compost
slightly larger than the plug plant and place them in the soil gently. Then firm the compost around the roots.
: Place your potted plants into a
greenhouse or conservatory if you have one. If not a windowsill will do. Keep them well watered
: Once your plants are full grown you will
need to prepare them for at least a week before outdoor planting. Place the plant still in the pots or trays outside during the day and cover them with fleece overnight.
: Only plant them into their permanent position once the threat of frost has passed.

While many envision Eskimos and igloos, Alaska is a pristine and beautiful state providing the perfect setting for a family vacation. Despite a land mass of over 500,000 square miles, only 20 percent of the state is accessible by road, meaning Alaska lends itself naturally to exploration by combining a cruise with an overland adventure. Guiding guests for over 70 years, Holland America Line has mapped out the entire region - from its rugged glacier-carved Inside Passage to the Yukon’s rich Klondike Gold Rush history. Their elegant mid-sized ships and legendary service perfectly compliment their unique ability to combine the Great Land’s must-see highlights with its seldom-seen and off-the-beaten path wonders. 1. Tip the bread mix into a bowl and stir in the sugar. Rub in the butter with your ďŹ ngertips, then add the chocolate chips.
INGREDIENTS • • • • •
500g pack white bread mix 50g butter 50g golden caster sugar 100g milk chocolate chips 200ml Shaken Udder Salted Caramel Milkshake • 100ml water
• 100ml milk • 1 large egg
FOR THE CROSSES & DECORATION: • 3 tbsps plain our • 2 tbsps water • Golden syrup, melted, for brushing
2. In a measuring jug, pour in the milkshake and water, then beat in the egg and transfer onto the dried ingredients. Mix to a very moist dough (the wetter the better). 3. Leave for 5 minutes then cut into 10 equal pieces and roughly shape into buns with oiled hands (this helps to stop the mixture sticking too much – try not to use extra our as it will toughen the dough). 4. Space the buns apart on 2 greased baking sheets and cover loosely with cling ďŹ lm. Leave the buns in a warm room until they've risen to about half the size again (this will take anything from 45 minutes to 1Âź hours, depending on how warm and moist the environment is). 5. When the buns are risen, heat the oven to 220ÂşC/fan 200ÂşC/Gas Mark 7 and make the crosses. Mix the our with the water to make a paste. Pour into a plastic food bag and make a tiny nick in one of the corners. Pipe crosses on each bun. 6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until risen and golden. Brush with golden syrup. The buns will keep fresh for a day, and after that are best toasted.
[COOK'S TIP] Using a pre-prepared white bread mix cuts down on the time factor, but still produces delicious results. ESSEX CENTRAL

At our Audley End event this summer, we kicked off the A Year of Celebrations initiative. Until 30th June 2018, we’re looking for your stories. Our first Celebration of the year comes from Mr and Mrs Huckle, who donated the proceeds from their Diamond Wedding anniversary party. Instead of receiving gifts, the couple raised an amazing £500 for us! If you’re celebrating a special birthday, anniversary, wedding or a personal milestone, we like invite you to celebrate
with us! If you have everything you need, we would welcome your donation – and you could even ask family and friends to help out too. Whether it’s a pound for every year of your life, or just what you’d spend on presents anyway, it’s never too small to help save a life. If you are throwing a party this year, you can request one of our ‘Celebration’ collection boxes to encourage donations from your guests throughout the event. Not only will you receive a special pack with balloons, tips on throwing a great party, and more, but you’ll also be able to download posters and invitations from our website.

WITHOUT A MAP... In February we had a trip to Maldon, a birthday party and the school valentine’s disco, George’s ďŹ rst question when we told him about the event was, “Will there be girls there?â€?‌ hang on, you’re 4, when did you turn into a Romeo?! We answered yes, and his face lit up. It seems like he is already trying to be a little charmer here and there because the following week he attended his friend’s party with a bunch of owers whilst the other kids all had presents like plastic poo or snot slime. But, back to the Valentine’s disco‌ we get there and I was immediately asked to start blowing up balloons, George ran off to dance and I was left trying to introduce myself to the other parents whilst simultaneously exhaling my entire lungs into 250 balloons. “Hi, pleased to huuuuu! meet you, my name huuuuuuh! is‌â€? and so on. I’d nearly passed out by the time I tied up the last balloon and hit it into the crowd of children, with blurry vision I stumbled across to some seats and forgot how low children’s seats are compared to adults. The thud of my backside crashing into this tiny stool nearly made the record skip and certainly turned a few heads, once the staring had stop I tried pushing my spine back down into place and subtly wiping away the tears, it was not going well for me so far. George on the other hand seemed to be having the time of his life, running around the hall, dancing as though possessed, and eating like a ravenous pig. It had been a minute or two and I’d started to unwind, sure the screaming kids were an ear ache but generally things seemed ok, until‌ a full on ďŹ st ďŹ ght broke out directly in front of me, between two 7 year olds! kid you not, it was like a scene from Lock Stock mixed with Teletubbies and after a second of looking around for parents or teachers I quickly stood up and parted the pair of them, one had been knocked down twice, the other had a bruised swollen face, eventually some other people came over and the kids’ parents were called, I sat back down on my miniscule stool and hoped the worst of the night had passed.
“It was like a scene from Lock Stock mixed with Teletubbiesâ€? It was at this moment of tranquillity I was hit with a 5 feet wooden spear. The teachers, in their inďŹ nite wisdom, had decided to set up two huge piĂąatas hanging from the ceiling and arm the kids with weapons‌. sorry, wooden batons, in order to smash them open to unleash the sweets. It was absolute carnage, I’ve seen more peaceful nights in war zones, and the screaming kids were like a pack of wolves as the sweets started to trickle from a crack in the side of these hanging treasures. By the time the event had ďŹ nished I needed counselling, I’d seen things no man should see and I'm honest enough to admit I’ve had many sleepless nights since that evening, waking up, screaming in cold sweats yelling, “Put down the sticks, for the love of God can we all just PUT DOWN THE STICKS!?!â€? The following week we went to Maldon and got robbed in broad day light. This was one of those
legal robberies though so I was unable to go to the police, ÂŁ7.50 for a single burger is horrendous, but I was starving so begrudgingly handed over my money. Jake was the one going a tad nuts today, and George did his best to chase after him. I was still busy haggling with the burger seller, “Throw in some bacon at least mate? Or an egg?â€? I was getting nowhere. The boys had gone with their mum onto the adventure park and I trudged along behind, eating my lousy expensive burger and grumbling under my breath (I must be getting really old). After ďŹ nishing the burger I thought it best to jump around with the boys a bit and throw myself into the fun, what I hadn’t taken into account was how many other small children were also trying to clamber up these climbing frames and how my sizeable frame was sending them ying into the frantic arms of angry parents, “Sorry, whoops, that was me, I do apologise!â€? I slowly made my way down and suggested a short walk by the riverbank, this idea was met with screams louder than a rocket launch and whilst I would generally carry on regardless, I decided this time to let them be, after all, it’s good to get them climbing because if I ever forget my house keys they can scurry up the wall and into the bedroom window like a couple of monkeys. Perhaps not the greatest use of them, but for the time being maybe they can climb into that burger van and get me some bacon!
