ith Mother’s Day later this month we have included a selection of treats and gift ideas, plus messages to your mum’s in ‘Have Your Say.’ We also introduce the first of our new features; ‘Local Landmark’ starting with the Winston Churchill statue in Woodford, which I grew up 5 minutes from so it was great to learn more about it. As ever we shall be giving you a roundup of Local News, What’s On, Club Focus, Dad’s Diary and much more. The charity feature remembers a very close friend of mine, Michael Norgrove, a boxer who tragically passed away but whose memory lives on through the Michael Norgrove Foundation. I hope you enjoy the first of our monthly issues and will see you again in April. Regards

Blossoms’ Chatterbox Challengers
LITTLE CHATTERBOX’S
Children at Blossoms Nursery, Harlow, recently took part in I CAN’S Chatterbox Challenge – ‘Sounds Like Fun with Humf’ – the early years fundraiser that makes chatter matter! I CAN is the children’s communication charity, who strive to ensure that no child is left out or left behind because of a difficulty communicating. The national challenge raised valuable funds to help the one
million children across the UK who are struggling to communicate. The children and babies learned nursery rhymes which they belted out in a fun sing-along designed by I CANS speech and language expert’s and got to play with a variety of musical instruments. Nursery owner Bobbi Chana said “Blossoms babies and toddlers enjoyed their sponsored singing and dancing with musical instruments for chatterbox challenge! We made hats to match our songs and have raised £70 so far! Our children really enjoyed their musical morning and look forward to more events!” To find out more about I CAN’s work and Blossoms Nursery visit: www.ican.org.uk and www.blossomsnurseryltd.com
ONGAR TOWN COUNCIL MARKS END OF COUNCILLOR’S 36 YEARS’ SERVICE
The unveiling of a plaque at the Ongar Town Council offices marked the end of former councillor Keith Tait’s 36-year association with the town as a parish and latterly town councillor. Mr Tait, who withdrew from the council last year, had served the Shelley ward from 1977 until 2013. Mr Tait had also served spells as council chairman and vice-chairman. Ongar Town Council marked Mr Tait’s departure from the council with a reception and plaque unveiling at ‘Bansons’ in Bansons Way, Ongar. The commemorative plaque was unveiled by current council vicechairman Brian Surtees and Olive Gross, widow of Mr Tait’s former Labour councillor colleague Roland Gross. Mr Surtees said: “I’ve known Keith all the time I have been a member of Ongar Town Council and we have shared the roles of chairman and vicechairman several times in the past. “Keith’s generosity and understating together with his knowledge and skill has been a tremendous asset over the years. “We look forward to maintaining contact with Keith in future and know that many residents will continue to value his advice and support.”

LOCAL LANDMARK THE WINSTON CHURCHILL STATUE
I
mmortalised in bronze, the figure of Britain’s formidable wartime leader still casts a giant shadow over Woodford Green more than 40 years after his death. His statue, which glares moodily towards South Woodford, serves as a fitting reminder of his legacy as Prime Minister during the Second World War, and as the area’s most famous MP. Churchill was in the twilight of his political career when he became MP for Woodford in 1945, his greatest achievements already behind him. A self-confessed workaholic, he continued to represent the constituency right up to October 1964, just months before his death at the age of 90. It was commissioned from sculptor David McFall, a supremely talented artist from Scotland. Born in Glasgow in 1919 he studied in Birmingham before moving his studies to the Royal College of Art in London. Quickly gaining a reputation as a master craftsman one of his earliest Portland Stone pieces called ‘The Bull Calf’ was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and was subsequently bought by the Tate in 1942, all whilst the sculptor was still a student. During his career he also sculpted a piece for another former Prime Minister who resided in Woodford, Clement Atlee. However, it’s the 8’6” statue of Sir Winston Churchill that is arguably his most recognised creation. The statue itself took McFall almost two years to create. His diaries show that he initially travelled to France in January 1958, to meet Churchill and begin work on the portrait head. Over a series of further meetings and sessions McFall went on to create casts of Churchill’s hands and bust and finally finished the piece on 2nd September 1959. Over 5,000 people (including

An iconic local landmark that millions have enjoyed
The bronze statue of Sir Winston Churchill is a prominent landmark The present day statue on Woodford Green, overlooking the top of Salway Hill. It was unveiled in 1959 to celebrate the great leader’s time as MP for Woodford and Wanstead. Churchill himself) were there on the 31st October 1959 to see the masterpiece unveiled by Field Marshall Viscount Montgomery. Churchill himself remarked “very nice” and the crowd applauded. The 39 year old McFall said “I’m delighted, this is my biggest work so far. The people will be proud of this statue.” His words are still
true to this day, such an iconic local landmark that millions have enjoyed over the succeeding years, and which stands strong in all weathers, still keeping watch over Woodford as Churchill himself once did. She has been a member of Chigwell Business Group (CBG) for over two years… “Prior to attending CBG, I had tried a number of other networking groups. CBG had just the right balance between being friendly,
welcoming and business-focussed. Membership consists of a diverse mix of businesses in different stages of development. The one thing everyone has in common though is a genuine desire to support fellowmembers in achieving new business. Around 40% of my current client-base has come from CBG referrals and I have had access to expert advice from other members which has also helped me to continually grow Gingerish Fish. The fact that I’m based in North Hertfordshire and have commuted down to Chigwell every Friday morning for over two years

On the outskirts of Harlow there is a garden full of beauty, peace and tranquillity - The Gibberd Garden. It is a wonderful place to stroll and be inspired. Every turn reveals another aspect or a work of art, for this garden was created by Sir Frederick Gibberd, the planner of Harlow New Town, who designed the garden and filled the grounds with sculptures, ceramic pots and architectural salvage. The garden has many aspects - formal lawns, flower beds, a brookside walk with a waterfall, a wild garden with a tangle of paths where children love to hide, a gazebo with a formal pond, an island fort to defend with a drawbridge onto it, an arboretum of young trees, and, at the end of a fascinating and memorable tour, a tearoom with mouthwatering cakes, ice creams and refreshments. Accompanied mothers will receive free entry to the garden on Mother’s Day. Marsh Lane, Harlow CM17 0NA Tel: 01279 442112, www. thegibberdgarden.co.uk

SPRING CLEAN YOUR
BODY
ull, cold and very wet. That has pretty much been the gist of the great English weather so far. However, believe it or not, spring is on its way and what better way to set yourself up for the warmer, sunnier months ahead than with a complete spring clean of your diet and lifestyle bringing your body and mind out of hibernation. Spring sees nature abound with tasty ingredients to inspire a healthy change and is an ideal time to give your dietary and lifestyle habits an overhaul. Healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to prevent and control many health problems, such as: heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat, such as adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of fat, salt, and sugar. A change to healthier eating also includes learning about balance, variety, moderation and getting active.
by Gemma Clark
TIPS TO GIVE YOU AND YOUR PLATE A HEALTHY SPRING MAKEOVER Q Aim for balance. Most days, try and eat from each food group. Whole-grains, fruit and vegetables, dairy, meat and protein and fats and oils. It is important that you listen to your body and eat when you’re hungry and stop when you feel satisfied. Q Aim for a rainbow of colours. Think reds like tomatoes, oranges like carrots and shades of green in all the different types of lettuces that come into season. Then there are yellows like peppers and blues and purples such as blueberries and aubergine. The darker the green, the better. Aim for spinach, kale, spring greens and rocket for example. Eating a colour-rich diet helps boost your nutrient intake,

including antioxidants and vitamins which support healthy weight, skin, and energy levels. Q Practice moderation. Don’t have too much or too little of one thing. All foods when eaten in moderation can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Even treats now and then can be ok. It is important to remember that healthy eating is not a diet. It means making changes you can live with and enjoy for the rest of your life. Q Get active. If you match healthy eating with more physical activity, you are more likely to get to a healthy weight-and stay there. Q Drink up. Make sure you’re drinking at least two litres of water per day – even more if you’re
exercising. This not only helps to flush toxins from the body, but staying well-hydrated improves mental alertness, promotes glowing skin, boosts your metabolism, and can help curb on those 3pm hunger pangs. Add a slice of lemon or a few sprigs of mint to your water for a burst of flavour and remember to stay hydrated if you’re cutting back on caffeine. Q Stay supported. Having support from others can be a huge help. The more support you have, the easier it will be to make changes. Ask family and friends to practice healthy eating with you. Have them help you make meals, and share healthy, delicious recipes and cooking tips.

COULD BE THE COOLEST NEW BRAND IN
ESSEX?
I speak to Charlotte Knight about her success, celebrity following and love of Top Golf. By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham
L
ast year was quite a ride for Charlotte Knight, founder and designer of Essex based brand, Ginge London, this brand has gone from strength to strength, gaining not only a huge fan base but also a wide celebrity following. The Diversity boys, Becca Dudley and Made In Chelsea’s Ollie Locke have all shared pictures of themselves adorned with Ginge London accessories. Within a minute of talking to Charlotte, it becomes
26

clear how passionate she is about her brand, she cites Burberry as her major influence while recognising the role that street bloggers play in the game that we call fashion.
still is incredible. I never imagined it would happen so quickly! Social media has played a huge role in getting Ginge London onto the market.
You’ve gained quite a following in quite a short amount of time, was this a surprise for you and how have you managed to take it in your stride? It was a huge surprise: the support I received from the public was, and
Celebrities such as Misha B and the Diversity boys have been seen sporting your hats, who would be the ultimate person to be spotted wearing Ginge London? I think it would have to be Rihanna, Beyoncè or Jay Z, I‘m a huge, huge

fan of them all. For me to see them in my hats would make all of my dreams come true. What is your favourite piece from your collection? This is a tough one, I design every single hat so I would say that they’re all my favourite. Right now because I am wearing it, it has to be the gold plaque beanie. Judging from Twitter and Instagram, Ginge London gives a fun, cool aesthetic. How would you describe the ‘Ginge’ persona? Exactly that, I feel my personality comes out in what I design. Ginge London is for those who enjoy being different and unique. The main reason I created this brand was to offer something new to the market – something unique. Although my brand is unisex I wanted females to be able to wear snapbacks that weren’t all sports related. Who would you cite as your major style influences or icons? My major influence probably has to be Burberry: what they have been doing with stud detailing has really added an edge to the brand. Also bloggers, street and festival style have played a major influence in my designs. When you aren’t wearing your own brand, where are your go to shops and designers? My two favourite shops would have to be Topshop and Warehouse, but I do love a good trainer, my collection takes over my room!
What plans do you have for 2014 and beyond, are you looking to get your own boutique? I’m still taking it day by day, I already have plans which I can’t discuss but last year was an amazing year for me and I am keen to make this year better. I love getting involved in new things. I would love to have my own shop one day but that time will come when it comes. As a born and bred Essex girl, where are your favourite places to shop, eat and drink? Lakeside is the main place I shop in Essex, you’ll see me down there at least once a week! I love a good Nandos, Kushoom Bugh in Upminster for Indian, for Chinese I go to the Welcome Inn in Hornchurch, Pizza Express and Sheesh in Chigwell. Can you tell us of any hidden treasures in Essex that you feel deserve more recognition? I have recently discovered Top Golf in Chigwell, if I didn’t have Ginge I’d want to become a professional golfer! As you started after attracting a lot of attention from your own customising, what advice would you offer to budding designers hoping to start their own line? To believe in yourself, work hard and never give up. I know how hard getting into the industry is and at times is very frustrating. However, if you’re determined enough, there will be somebody out there in the industry who will notice you if you have the talent and creative flare.

There doesn’t seem to be just one main shade for spring this year, but there’s definitely a palette of beautiful Easter pastels. HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY COOPERSALE HALL SCHOOL! 1989 - 2014
O
Only 2 minutes from Epping Station.
ver the last 25 years Coopersale Hall School has firmly established itself as the leading independent prep school in Epping, boasting an excellent success record and outstanding reputation. Coopersale Hall School was a large empty country manor house when it was purchased by the Hagger family in 1988 and welcomed its first classes in April 1989 following much building work and transformation into a school. Following an extensive building programme throughout the 1990s, 2000s and into 2013, the school successfully contrasts the ornate Grade 2 listed building with modern purpose-built classrooms and the latest specialist areas. Some of the outstanding resources include a large astroturf, sports field, extensive playgrounds and courts, dance/music studio, ICT suite, science block and a school hall that used to be society ballroom. Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal of Coopersale Hall and its two sister schools in the Oak-Tree Group, says, “As Epping
town has grown, so has the need for the outstanding independent education that Coopersale Hall has been pleased to provide. Although only 25 years old, we’ve educated thousands of local children to an excellent standard that has enabled them to succeed.
The school was born during recessionary times in order to meet a growing demand for families looking for independent education. Nowadays the Year 6 children sit and pass 11+ entrance exams for such prestigious schools as Brentwood, Haileybury, Bishop’s Stortford College, Bancroft’s and New Hall. Our education is constantly evolving and one of our strengths is the strong relationships we’ve
developed with our parents. All staff are readily available to chat to parents and I hold regular coffee mornings for each yeargroup to listen to feedback and discuss our education informally.” Whilst there are still one or two members of staff at Coopersale Hall who joined at the beginning, the school was recently delighted to welcome its first child of a former pupil. Hopefully this is a tradition that will continue over the years. Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress comments “Our pupils are very lucky to have such a pleasant and stimulating environment in which to learn and our teachers value the extensive grounds and facilities which they put to good use in their lessons. We are a family school with the staff, parents and pupils all working together to achieve the potential of every child. Most importantly of all, we never forget that learning should be fun.”

Now is the time to begin sowing your seeds indoors

GARDENING WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON
A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.
T
hings are looking bright Spring is finally on its way! This is the season when day light hours are beginning to get much longer and the spring sunshine enhances new growth and greenery. The buds burst and leaves start appearing and unfolding on trees and hedges. Crocuses, snowdrops, daffodils and many other woodland plants are now starting to flower.
Now is the time to begin sowing your seeds indoors if you haven’t got a greenhouse. There are many varieties of seeds that you can choose from. Purchase and sow seeds that will give your garden a lovely long lasting floral display that will last from summer through to early autumn. Vegetable seeds can also be sown inside too. Marigolds are easy to grow from seed they look great at the front of any
border. Tomatoes can be sown in various varieties. Cherry tomatoes are small and will ripen and grow much quicker in our variable British climate, they look great in hanging baskets too. Cosmos are very charming tall flowers that will look great in any garden. Written by Amenity horticulturalist & gardening committee member of Copped Hall and Epping horticultural society Victoria Robertson
STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO PLANTING SEEDS 1. Fill small pots or seed trays with seed compost, firm the soil down with your palm and leave 1cm from the top of the pot or tray (You can even use a paper egg carton) 2. Sprinkle seeds evenly and thinly over the surface of the compost, leaving approx 2cm between each one. Cover seeds with a thin layer of compost and firmly compact the soil, then water the seeds but avoid over soaking them. 3. Place a label on the tray with the name and variety of the seeds. 4. Cover the pot or tray with a polythene bag. Place on a well-lit windowsill.
5. Water the seeds daily keep the compost moist. 6. Remove the plastic cover as soon as seedlings emerge and grow. They are ready to be ‘pricked’ out and re-potted when the first ‘true’ leaves emerge. 7. Continue to re-pot your plants on to bigger pots as they grow. 8. Plant them outside in the ground or in tubs and containers after the threat of the last frost has passed. TIP Be sure to remove the pots or trays from the window sill at night as it can still become far too cold for your seeds during the evening hours. Return the pots to the window sill during the daytime.
Chafer grubs feed on plant roots, especially those of grasses. They cause damage to lawns. They can be found in the soil under loose turf. They have stout white bodies curved in a C shape, light brown heads, with three pairs of legs at the head end. Poorly maintained lawns are more susceptible to damage, so attention needs to be paid to feeding, watering and moss prevention. This will help avoid damaging infestations.
WILDLIFE WATCH
Animals which have hibernated over winter appear on the first warm days of spring so keep an eye out for hedgehogs. If you spot hedgehogs in your garden put out some food for them. Dry good quality cat biscuits are ideal as they don’t freeze or go off. You can also put out fresh tinned cat or dog food. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and must never be given cows’ milk or milk products. It can cause severe digestive upset and be very harmful to them. If you want to give hedgehogs a drink, make it water.

QUAIL,SHERRY SWEET POTATO ROASTED BREAST OF QUAIL, PEDRO XIMÉNEZ CARAMEL
Head Chef of Haywards fine dining restaurant in Epping, Jahdre Hayward, shows us how to make this exquisite quail dish.
METHOD (Starter for 4) 1. Peel 1 sweet potato, slice into 1 cm thick circles and using a circular cutter about 4cm in diameter cut into fondant shape pieces. Place in a shallow pan and cover in water with 10g of chopped butter, a sprig of rosemary and a splash of olive oil. Cook on the stove at a low heat for 5-10 minutes until soft. 2. Using the excess
pieces of sweet potato, cut them all into roughly the same size pieces and wrap in tinfoil with a splash of olive oil, pinch of salt and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Cook in oven at approximately 200c for 20 minutes until soft, then strain, blitz until smooth in a food processor adding 50ml of cream. 3. In a heavy based saucepan on the heat make a caramel by melting 100g of castor

ONE CANADA SQUARE
RESTAURANT REVIEW T by D James
he ETM group began in 2000, founded by brothers Ed & Tom Martin, until now they had mainly created ‘rustic’ feeling gastro pubs, warm cosy venues with think wooden tables and open fires such as ‘The Gun’ in Docklands, and ‘The Well’ on St John Street. However, their new venture is seriously modern, with sleek lines, marble pillars and a luxurious setting on the ground floor of the iconic London landmark 1 Canada Square ‘Canary Wharf’.

COCKTAILS
Upon arrival we were given the choice of two bars for a pre-dinner cocktail. We ventured upstairs to the Mezzanine, and found a seat at the end of the bar – the perfect place to watch the expert cocktail waiters work their magic. We were recommended a couple of cocktails from the extensive list; an ‘English Cosmopolitan’ (complete with Pansy decoration) and a ‘Classic Rye Manhattan,’ both of which were fantastic. The bar staff really knew what they were doing and invited us to go ‘off menu’ for something more bespoke, so as a fan of Amaretto I asked for a drink built around the liquor. What arrived was a thing of beauty, laden with a chocolate
lattice for extra presentation (and taste!) points. We were already impressed and had not even got to the starter.
FOOD
To begin our meal we ordered the Lobster Bisque and Yellowfin Tartare for starters. The Lobster Bisque was thick and creamy with a deep flavour from the first spoonful to the last, whilst the accompanying breadsticks were warm and served alongside a soft butter on slate (many restaurants serve cold, unspreadable butter so this shows great attention to detail). The Yellowfin Tartare was beautifully presented and the portion was larger than expected. The tuna was clearly as fresh as can be, which is not surprising as Billingsgate Fish Market is just a stones throw away. Fish features quite heavily on the menu, and this is obviously why. For our mains we chose the Market Fish - pan fried fillet of Torbay turbot, sautéed gnocchi, crab mousseline, smoked bacon velouté with a side of purple sprouting broccoli and the 45 day aged rib eye steak with hand cut chips and truffled artichokes on the side. The turbot was cooked to perfection and the flavour combinations were exquisite. The steak was a generous size, juicy,
FOOD & DRINK REVIEW
Tuna Tartare
Lobster Bisque
Pan Fried Torbay Turbot tender and seasoned just right. I asked for it to be cooked medium to well done, which is exactly what I got and the chips were beautifully crisp but light inside. For dessert the Savarin cheesecake with blood orange and Campari proved to be a good choice. The orange juices flowed into the cheesecake and created a delicious bitter sweet taste that made my mouth water. It was both creamy and crumbly, a perfect pairing for any cheesecake. My dining companion chose the Rhubarb Soufflé with gingerbread ice cream, after a recommendation by our waitress, Sarah, and she was not disappointed. It was very indulgent and sweet but light at the same time.
WINE
The wine list was presented on a hand-held tablet where we could scroll through the selection of wines according to our preferences, which we thought was a nice modern touch (conventional menus were also available). We were pleasantly surprised to find that we could order ‘by the glass’ rather than commit to a whole bottle for most of their wines, which is a rarity for many fine dining establishments. We asked Sarah to
recommend suitably matched wine for each course and thought her choices complimented each dish perfectly. In particular the Argentinian, Malbec, Luigi Bosca, Mendoza, 2011 was the ideal accompaniment to the steak and dramatically enhanced the flavours.

VERDICT
We will definitely be visiting One Canada Square again. The venue is suitable for many occasions from a romantic meal to a business lunch. The atmosphere was relaxed and just right for a Friday night, with music playing in the background loud enough to be heard but not too loud. The food was exceptional, as was the service. The staff were very knowledgeable, made some great recommendations and were attentive without being overbearing. Make no mistake, this is a ‘fine dining’ experience but you get more than what you pay for. The food came in around £50 per head, plus drinks, which we felt was very reasonable for what we had. t could be the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean coast. Or it could be the culture, preserved in gorgeous churches, beautiful squares, the ancient fortresses, lighthouses and other majestic sights. Then again, it could be because it’s all just a couple of hours away from the UK. Five Croatian coastal airports have direct flights from Stansted (plus flights from Luton, Heathrow and Gatwick). The flight to Pula and Rijeka is usually 2 hours, and marginally more to Zadar, Split or Dubrovnik. Croatia enjoys a varied climate with continental conditions inland - in other words, hot and dry weather during summer. Dubrovnik, for example, averages 72°F in July, while Pula is marginally warmer at 77°F. Sea swimming is at its best in August, when
the water temperature reaches similar levels. Coastal areas may be a little milder, but the country as a whole averages 1213 hours of daily sunshine between May and August. Beaches here are mainly pebble, fringed with pine trees, but the island of Rab contains 22 sandy bays. The proximity to Italy makes Croatian cuisine especially good, with highly recommended seafood, pasta and risotto. And if you choose to stay in the Istria or Kvarner regions, you can take a day trip by catamaran to Venice. Like the UK, Croatia is a member of the European Union but has chosen to keep its own currency, the Kuna. This means your holiday money goes further and is not subject to the weakness of the euro.

WHERE TO STAY
Abbotts Travel and Prestige Holidays offer the very best ways to see this beautiful country - they recommend the following, selected by a British expert resident in Croatia:
4-STAR SUPERIOR PARK PLAZA HISTRIA, PULA
The rooms and the spa of this excellent hotel are of five-star standard. Designer glamorous, this is where the stars stay who perform at the Roman amphitheatre: think Tom Jones, Jose Carreras, Sting, Vanessa Mae... and the biggest indoor pool in Croatia. Visit the Roman ruins, the fantastic Brijuni islands or escape for a day’s sunbathing on wild Cape Kamenjak. From £549 per person if booked before 15 March 2014. Based on two sharing a Superior double room (Marina Wing) on a bed and breakfast basis, departing on 13 May 2014 for 7 nights, including return flights with Ryanair from Stansted to Pula and shared transfers.
TOP: Roman Amphitheatre, Pula. BOTTOM: Sandy Bay on the island of Rab. There is a very wide choice of accommodation from clean, simple apartments in Dubrovnik to luxurious five star hotels with spas. More five star hotels, together with some stylish three and four-star properties (many right by the beach), can be found on the island of Hvar. There are also private villas that were once family palaces and even a lighthouse overlooking a beach with direct access! In addition, beautiful self-catering apartments have helped to make the most exclusive spot in Croatia affordable for all budgets. Add to this a great selection of cruises in simple, casual style or on more stylish motor yachts. Other options include multi-centre trips, walking holidays, escorted tours and self-drive itineraries.
5 STAR ROYAL PRINCESS HOTEL DUBROVNIK ALL SUITE HOTEL
This stunning property opened in 2012 and is situated in the grounds of the Importanne Resort. There are four swimming pools and it has its own exclusive spa. Fabulous restaurants, bars with huge open terraces looking over the Adriatic and some rock/stone beaches with smooth paved areas and waiter service. Rooms feature hand crafted Canadian wood furniture. Perfect for a weekend escape or longer. From £409 per person if booked before 31 March 2014. Based on two sharing a deluxe suite on a bed and breakfast basis, departing on 27 April 2014 for 3 nights, including return flights with EasyJet from Stansted to Dubrovnik with shared transfers. COMMUNITY
The boxing gym members in Zambia
THE MICHAEL NORGROVE
FOUNDATION Michael Norgrove
W
“My respect and admiration for boxers was quickly cemented and my new love was found. Sport has always had a big influence on my life.” - Michael Norgrove
ith a blend of boxing and academics, the Michael Norgrove Foundation aims to help young people develop themselves and improve their life chances as outstanding members of society. Set up in memory of Michael Norgrove, the Scholarship covers the cost of school fees and other educational activities, with the aim of helping youngsters develop a sense of discipline and work ethic. Michael Norgrove was born in Kabwe, Zambia, Southern Africa in 1981 where he lived until he was seven. He later settled in Woodford Green, where he attended Woodbridge High School. With a keen interest in a range of sports from early on, Michael eventually singled out boxing as the sport he would dedicate himself to. His achievements came quickly since he was eager to thrust himself into the boxing limelight as soon as possible. Maximising the short time available to him, he went through white collar boxing, ABA’s, reaching the finals and eventually losing by just one point. Being undefeated in 6 fights Michael set his sights on the Southern
area title. With a recent career break behind him, he was eager to kickstart his career again. Some argued that the time out would set him back, but he proved otherwise by knocking down his younger opponent in the early rounds of his final bout. Michael’s commitment to boxing led him to join forces with Nicholas Chanda and George Mumba. They started working on a project to help young disadvantaged children through boxing as a means for providing focus and discipline in life. The aim was to partner up with a boxing gym in Zambia run by Anthony Mwamba who has trained world champions. This project was in its early stages when Michael’s life was sadly cut short and he passed away. The passion and desire to help others brought Michael and his brothers in-law together. This now lives on through the Michael Norgrove Foundation. The Foundation was brought into being when Nicholas Chanda, George Mumba, Hazel Norgrove Mumba and Chimuka Moore decided to carry forward Michael’s desire to help underprivileged young people. For some children who do not
attend school, boxing provides a sense of community and a place to learn and grow. Nonetheless the gym environment lacks basic safety and training equipment. The Foundation wants to help improve the safety and condition of the gym as well as supporting the youngsters with their education, so donations of second hand equipment, clothes, books, pens and pencils are welcome. Working with the East London and Essex community the Foundation is seeking opportunities to develop projects in the area at the grassroots level. As a newly formed Foundation the trustees welcome any ideas and are interested in hearing from people who would like to become involved. The Michael Norgrove Foundation will be holding a fundraiser on 15th March with a party and art exhibition.
If you would like to become involved in the work of the foundation, make a donation or a contribution, please visit: www. michaelnorgrove.org or email hazel@michael norgrove.org. To purchase fundraiser tickets visit: www.resident advisor.net/event. aspx?559402

DAD’S DIARY FIRST STEPS

ENTERING FATHERHOOD
WITHOUT A MAP T
he three big news stories in Diddy Man’s life right now are starting nursery, mastering walking and food. He has started going to see the other kids at nursery three days a week, and is really enjoying it. Although mingling with so many people had the inevitable consequence of him catching new illnesses, namely a seemingly never-ending cold and the dreaded Chicken Pox. His nose continuously leaked whilst the Chicken Pox began to spread, the poor fella looked like a snotty dot to dot game. The recent bad weather has kept his cold going longer than any of us would have wanted, and he often looks like he has threaded a luminous green shoelace through his nose the way it hangs and sways. This can be especially gruesome when picking him up for a hug only for you to be left looking like something that’s crawled out of a swamp. It has also made his sleeping quite tricky as he gets very bunged up, which then affects his breathing, so he wakes up crying. In turn this has also ruined our sleeping patterns. Oh the joy of these first few colds! The other night he woke again quite early as his congestion got the better of him and we brought him into our room as he dozes off very peacefully on my arm. But as he floats into the land of snooze I’m left with an arm rapidly losing circulation. I try to lever his head without waking him in order to allow a faint trickle of blood to flow back down my arm and into my limp hand, but it’s no use, he begins try cry and I quickly prioritise ‘sleep’ above ‘limb’. At 2am I awoke with a strange pain between my buttocks, it was

wiggling and sharp, I hadn’t a clue what was going on. I turned to see my son’s big toe thrust snugly into my rear and wondered why he had chosen to keep this particular toe warm, my dreams about riding a bike with no saddle were now making sense, and I popped him free like a vintage cork. He carried on snoozing whilst I limped around the bedroom and the Mrs stifled her laughter.
My dreams about riding a bike with no saddle were now making sense Still at least his immune system is getting stronger, because pretty soon he will have to start eating my mum’s food, in fact we better give him a tetanus just to be safe. In the last few weeks we have seen some dramatic changes in food for the little fella, he has gone from eating substances in jars that resemble cheap wallpaper paste, on to an array of different delights: peaches, toast, pineapple, chocolate mousse, shepherd’s pie, lasagne, carrots, pears, broccoli, apples and sweet potatoes…. And that’s just for breakfast! Most food he eats now seems to produce the same reaction from him, a loud and prolonged ‘Mmmmm!’ this may be because he loves all food, or perhaps making the sound just helps him to swallow, but either way it’s making us feel like the Gordon Ramsey of kid’s cuisine. He also seems to have developed a penchant for tea, quite happily sipping from the mug and generally wanting anything we are eating and drinking. I don’t quite understand which one of us eats the TV remote
in front of him but he is also clearly copying this from someone, many buttons are now missing and the TV is stuck on the Mongolian weather channel, but aside from that things are good. The biggest change in him since the last issue though is walking, it’s not a few staggered steps as before but full on walking, hitching hiking, sprinting and pole vaulting. Ok, maybe the last 3 are a little embellished but the walking has been phenomenal. It kind of happened within 48 hours, one moment he was doing a few steps then sitting down, but then a couple of days later he was striding from room to room. Along with picking up everything and putting it in his mouth (we’ve already lost two goldfish: RIP Goldie and Coolio). We picked him up from my mother’s recently, to be told “He’s had a great day colouring in,” when we saw him it looked like he’d eaten a Smurf! His mouth was blue and his tongue matched, yet his smile was beaming (I guess they taste good?) and I’m told the pens were safe for kiddies, it’s just a shame her wallpaper was peeled away as our little lad tried to bring his drawings home with him. With his new found walking skills I have been constantly (and very hopefully) throwing a soft football at his feet. Currently he doesn’t quite ‘kick’ the ball, it’s more of a ‘pick up and eat’ manoeuvre that has left me somewhat crushed. However, I shall persevere with this and keep you updated on his skilful prowess. It’s quite funny to think that if (big if) he actually went on to play for a top team, all the fans would have this early diary entry as his first recorded football skills. ...TO BE CONTINUED

CLUB FOCUS GATOR ABC
r GatoC AB
IN THE
RING I n the early 1950’s the Dr Barnardo’s children’s home, ‘Gwynne House’ in Woodford Bridge (now the Prince Regent Hotel) started the Garden City Amateur Boxing Club. Over the past 60 years the club has helped transform the lives of children and young adults from all backgrounds, teaching them the value of hard work and dedication. Now based at Hainault Business Park the club has since undergone a name change to Gator Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) and has 8 dedicated coaches who train just over 80 members ranging from 10 years of age to their late 20’s. Keith Markham, the current Chairman and Head Coach has been involved in Gator ABC since 1980 and has been a father figure, psychologist, mentor and trainer to thousands of kids in that time, many of whom have gone on to become professional boxers. Most recently, 14 year old Martin Ward became the ‘National School Boys Champion’ after going through 6 regional rounds to make the final. As a registered charity Gator ABC is constantly striving to stay afloat through donations, and each year they hold a Grand Dinner at the Prince Regent Hotel, keeping the clubs link with the past at the venue. Their next ‘Grand Dinner Boxing Show’ is on 9th May and tickets are £35.

Upon our visit to Gator ABC we saw some terrific sparring between evenly matched members, and noticed the discipline and respect the members had for each other and the coaches. We caught up with Keith who explained their plans for the future, “Well firstly we hope to continue for another 60 years, it gets harder and harder but that’s why our yearly dinner is so important for our funding. After that, we would like to do well in the National Championships again. The London Association Finals are on the 9th of March so we hope to have progressed beyond that.” The club is open for all levels of ability and they have two main groups, the ‘Carded Boxers’ who compete across the country in competitive bouts, and the ‘Nursery Group’ for beginners of all ages. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, or what background you are from, we all start equal in boxing and we coach the members from the Nursery group onwards” said Keith.
If you would like to help Gator ABC continue to serve the local community for another 60 years or if you want to become a boxer yourself, then visit www.gatorabc.co.uk to find out more. If you would like to purchase tickets for the Grand Dinner Boxing Show please call Keith on 07802 936 432.
