FIGHTING BACK AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
South Woodford resident Claire Andrews has been working hard to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence. Claire has been collecting second-hand clothing and donating them to local refuges. These items are handed out to people who have fled an abusive domestic situation, often leaving home with only a small bag of belongings. She is also running on the Refuge team in the British 10k in July. Claire was once a victim of domestic abuse herself, but found the help she needed and courage to leave the relationship from Refuge and the police. Claire said, “I wanted to raise awareness of the charity Refuge, they do an amazing job supporting women like myself when fleeing a domestic abusive relationship. Since witnessing 1st hand of what refuges are like, I have wanted to give back for the help I was given, mainly raising awareness to women and men who like myself didn’t know where to turn to for help.” Please donate on Claire’s just giving page: www.justgiving.com/ Claire-Andrews83. If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic abuse then help can be found at www. Refuge.org.uk. National domestic violence helpline: 0808 2000 247

Mum Tracey from Hainault, whose daughter Ashley, uses the hospice told us; “Meeting Simon was a brilliant experience for all of us. He was really charming and spent time talking to us and finding out about our children, I almost forgot he’s this big TV star.” Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the hospice said of Simon’s visit; “Having someone as well-known as Simon visit the hospice is a real morale booster for everyone here. For a small, local hospice, we get some great celebrity support, which really helps to promote our work in the local community and beyond.”

elen McFadyen is a Freelance Specialist in Non-Invasive Face and Body Contouring. Helen’s background is in fitness, nutrition and sports massage, however, she was taken seriously ill a couple of years ago so had to take time out. After visiting a local salon Helen was intrigued by a new ‘clinic’ that they were running for inch loss - so started researching the techniques used. Helen then launched Allure SX in March and now runs 7 ‘face and body contouring’ clinics across Essex (including Ongar and Theydon Bois) offering Lipotherm Plus Ultrasound Cavitation for targeted inch loss, Radio Frequency for skin tightening and toning and also the Lipolift Pro body wrap system for overall inch loss. Helen said, “I’m not only doing something that I love and find very rewarding but have found the response quite overwhelming, salons are excited by the response at no risk/cost to them and with a stream of new clients coming through their doors.” Currently running at almost full capacity and with a waiting list at one of the clinics, plans for the future include adding a second machine, recruiting a small team and branching out into other counties by the end of the year. FABULICIOUS BAKING SCHOOL
T
he founder of Fabulicious Baking School has become Loughton’s own Mary Berry as she develops the school which is celebrating one year in business. Latifa Kapasi is French trained having turned her lifelong passion for baking into a business. She specialises in French patisserie, bread, cupcakes, birthday parties and kids’ clubs. Latifa says, “I always wanted to run my own business and after coming back to England it was the perfect opportunity once the children were settled. I worked for a short time at a French cafe as a pastry chef but I didn’t enjoy it. They were buying things in frozen so I never got to make or create anything. “In France I used to teach English as a foreign language to both adults and children before Latifa Kap asi training to be a baker. I really enjoyed teaching and so I decided to open a baking school where I could combine the two. “We offer a wide range of courses from tarte au chocolat and éclairs to macarons and Le fraisier.” Her products are also available at Loughton’s Farmers Market on the first Sunday every month. “We offer ‘after school’ clubs to learn both sweet and savoury baking plus holiday clubs, master classes and birthday parties. I pride myself on the quality of my ingredients making sure no animal products are used. My celebration cakes are also very popular.” Plans for the future include publishing easy to follow recipe books in different languages and offering a combined language and baking class for adults and children. The Baking School is situated above a shop at 251a High Road, Loughton access is around the back via the service road by the junction of Brooklyn Avenue. A 1st birthday celebration offer - £5 off the first class booked. Tel: 020 3129 5451 www.fabbakingschool.com
DOMESTIC BLISS
A
fter starting the company last year, best friends Michelle and Anne have created a home PA service that many people can no longer do without! Their clients rely on them for many different tasks, such as: research for small businesses, tax returns, errand running, diary management and much more plus the new service of pay-roll management. In short, if you have too much on your plate, then give these two a call! We caught up with them to find out more, Anne said, “Once we had kids we decided to change our working lives and come away from the city, and as former PA’s we each had many years of experience so decided to launch Domestic Bliss. We’ve had some crazy requests over the past 12 months but it’s been great fun working together and growing the business.” Anne and Michelle are both funny, warm, friendly and professional people, a great set of qualities for roles that become so personal in people’s lives, and it’s clear to see why they are having success. Michelle tells us more about their future plans, “We will soon be providing a complete business and lifestyle management service, assisting busy people in the day to day running of their businesses and
Anne McGavin and Michelle Chapman homes. There are so many things that people don’t have time to do and that’s where we can help.” With discounts for on-going services, and covering an area from Ongar to Wanstead it’s clear that more people will be speaking to the ladies very soon about getting some Domestic Bliss in their lives! TOTALLY GOLF
Totally Golf staff members Rob Darling and Marc Dodd
F
our years ago, on the site of a former golf shop, Jo Allum decided she would begin a new line of business and launched “Totally Golf”. Initially the focus was towards the high end brands and expanding the female market. A couple of years later her son Stuart joined the team and began to oversee a focused approach on the golfer, not just on the course but the lifestyle. Stuart said, “We wanted the shop to be more than a standard golf outlet, we expanded the mezzanine area to include a drinks area and golf library, plus an extended product range and two golf simulators including GC2 with 12 championship courses as showcased on Sky.” It’s certainly impressive, just walking around the store you are met with golf experts behind the counter and the largest product range in Herts and Essex. They also offer a bespoke sitting service as well, where all aspects of the golfer are evaluated by an expert. Stuart explains, “We are very honest with the golfer, if they only need to change their swing and not spend a penny,
then we will tell them. We’re about the golfer, not the spreadsheets. Once the intensive sitting has been completed many golfers can take 4 or 5 off their handicap which can be a huge difference to their game.” Totally Golf are big believers in giving back to the local community, helping schools and charities alike with donations and money raising efforts which is very commendable from this family run business. They have also just completed a new “shop in shop” design, that gives many top brands their specified area with an extensive range of products, and although the shop is tucked away it was certainly busy on our visit. Why not head down, practise your swing and enjoy a coffee with your tee? St James Centre, East Rd, Harlow, CM20 2SX Tel: 01279 432288, www.totally-golf.com

GROUP D England, Italy, Urug uay, Costa Rica England v Italy June 14th 11pm England v Uruguay June 19th 8pm England v Costa Ri ca June 24th 5pm
Watching the games from the comfort of your sofa? Add a touch of Brazilian flair to the occasion with their national cocktail the Caipirinha. Made with cachaca, a sweet Brazilian style of rum it’s sure to get you in good spirits whether England win, lose or draw. 1. Place lime wedges and 2 tsp golden castor sugar into a tumbler 2. Muddle well. 3. Fill the glass with crushed ice. 4. Pour in 50ml cachaca. 5. Stir well.
Ok, the important bit, England kick off their campaign against those tactical masters Italy. Pirlo will be pulling the central strings for the Azzurri but hopefully Gerrard can nullify the midfield threat in the humid conditions of Manaus. A draw wouldn’t be a bad start. Next up we face Uruguay in Sao Paolo, under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer. England will be hoping that Suarez has not quite recovered from his keyhole knee surgery just a few weeks ago, and will have to The last time England won also be aware of Cavani, the other Uruguayan striker The Word Cup… on red hot form this season. If we mark these two Austria won Eurovision well then our boys could pick up a win here. Our last match of the group stage sees us Real Madrid won the take on the Costa Ricans in Belo Horizonte. European Cup On paper this is certainly one we should be winning but with the South American Atletico Madrid won the conditions favouring the Costa Ricans Spanish League it will certainly be harder for Roy’s boys The FA Cup was won from to keep up their premiership pace in the a 2-0 deficit Brazilian sunshine. SLEEP?
e all know that when you don’t sleep properly your body is affected in many ways, regardless of the cause; be it waking early to fit in a training session or constant waking during the night. You may feel lethargic, crave heavy complex carbohydrates; bread, potatoes and pasta or quick-fix sugary foods such as cakes, fizzy and alcoholic drinks and sweets. You may just feel like your daily life exhausts you, not realising that staying awake in artificial light counteracts the intention of Mother Nature. The quality of this energy depends on a couple of factors which are heavily affected by sleep deprivation. When you don’t sleep in sync with the seasonal variation in light exposure, you fundamentally alter a balance of nature that has been programmed into our physiology, a clock embedded into every living thing. When you do cut back on sleep there are at least 10 different hormones and many neurotransmitters in the brain that go out of sync. Despite the common myth that a lie-
By Nick Doughty
in at the weekend can help you to catch up on sleep, studies have shown that obtaining adequate sleep is crucial in restoring both physical and mental health and balancing of hormones. The body is a well-oiled machine. You can’t short change it out of sleep - otherwise it reacts like a badly behaved child, demanding sweets and refusing to perform the mental or physical tasks that you set it. By cancelling the night using light, you are affecting the natural order. In order to understand your body, you need to remember that we have evolved over millennia to recognise cues in nature. By keeping the lights on, your body recognises the artificial light as late summer; a time of ‘feast’ to endure the ‘famine’ that always followed until now. Humans can bare several days of continuous sleeplessness, experiencing deteriation in wellbeing and effectiveness. Chronic sleep loss or shallow sleep will tend to accumulate across several days, leading to the disruption of cognitive functions and will account for impaired perception, difficulties in keeping concentration, vision disturbances, sensitivity to pain is higher, reactions slower, lower
capabilities of task performance, poor cognitive memory, impaired decision making and emotional disturbances, increased aggression and premature ageing through hormonal imbalances. Unique Performance Clinic www.UPclinic.co.uk 07818554723

PICTURE PERFECT BRIDAL
MAKE-UP When it comes to planning your wedding day, you often have so much to think about, that the thought of arranging a make-up artist can be daunting… but fear not!
Y
our wedding day is a day when you should feel your most confident and most beautiful. You spend countless hours and days searching for the perfect dress. Much thought is put into your venue choice, your photographer and rightfully so as its your special day. What about your makeup? I’ve listed below a few do’s and don’ts that should help you achieve that picture perfect look.
DO...
1. Make sure you have your trial at least 4 weeks, but no more than 7 weeks, before your wedding. If you plan on using fake tan for the big day, have a test run before your make-up trial so that your make-up artist can see what colour your skin becomes with the tan. 2. Wear a white t-shirt if you’re having your make-up trial so that you can see how the make-up looks against a pale colour and take a picture of yourself in day light (with no flash) to see how it looks. 3. Get yourself a pressed powder. Hot
spots happen to the best of us - don’t let a shiny face ruin your photos. To avoid them at all costs, hit any areas that tend to get that bad glow with a translucent powder. 4. Bring references to your makeup trial. Start looking for images of make-up that you really like and bring them with you on the day. Try to identify what it is you like about the make-up in the image and take into account that if you have the skin colour of Dita Von Teese then the make-up of Kim Kardashian won’t necessarily translate onto you. 5. Book yourself in for individual eyelashes - they’re a brilliant way to make your eyes stand out and look far more subtle than a full strip. 6. Go pro. The best wedding make-up should last as long as you do so research into your make up artist, go on recommendations from friends and family. And enjoy! It’s not everyday you get to have your make-up professionally applied.
appointment several days before your big day. 3. Be scared of going a bit brighter. Neutral, brown, and pale lip colours can look washed out in photographs, so choose a lipstick that’s one or two shades brighter than what you would normally wear. Pinks, roses and plums are all great, classic choices for brides. If you are going for a vintage themed look a beautiful classic red lipstick can work really well. 4. Only look at the make-up to your face. Instead, extend down your neck and over your shoulders if necessary, this will ensure your face is not a different colour or even texture to your body.
DON’T...
1. Have your make-up test done anywhere with overhead fluorescent lighting. If you have a professional make-up artist coming to your home, arrange a time when it’s still daylight outside. 2. Pluck your eyebrows on the day. It’s never a good idea to mess with your face the day of your wedding. If you wax or have your eyebrows plucked professionally, make your
5. Leave it to the last minute. Book about six months in advance as good make-up artists go fast. A great option is to find a salon that does both hair and make up so you can see the finished look. 6. Rush. Allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for make-up application on the wedding day.

With so many designs available now at affordable prices, the designer look of a bathroom is an option for all size bathrooms and all types of budgets, whether it is contemporary or traditional there are options to suit everyone.
TAP
What are the best options for a small bathroom or en-suites? The most common issue when fitting a new bathroom suite in a small area is working out sizes according to the space and limitations. Firstly many customers are not aware that there are corner options for all items, e.g. quadrant showers, corner basin/sink units with a storage cupboard below and even corner WC’s with smaller cisterns. Also there are different depth options in sanitary ware allowing for more floor space to move around. Most bathroom companies will have a design programme where the options can be put onto a plan so that you can get a full idea from all angles of how the final layout will look. Another space saver would be combining a bath and a shower such as a p-shaped bath which is wider at one end for showering purposes. The baths come in different lengths according to the needs of the client.
36
ESSEX CENTRAL
Is under-floor heating in a bathroom a good idea? Yes under-floor heating is a great option, however electric under-floor heating is known as a “luxury heat” which is great to walk on after a shower or bath or on a cold morning when the tiles on the floor would otherwise be cold, but will not necessarily heat the space efficiently. You would still need a small radiator or towel rail to heat the room. Under-floor electric heating will need a spur switch on the wall outside of the bathroom which will feed the electrics to the underfloor matting. Towel rails that are constantly covered in towels will need to have increased output by 20% to allow the room and the towels to be heated affectively, so bear this in mind when calculating the correct heat output from the towel rails. How can I find space for everything? A great way to save space would be to combine a heated mirror/radiator which

Wall hung units are stylish and just as sturdy
will allow one item rather than two taking up wall space to allow for more storage, or a mirrored cabinet would be another space saver, again if you wanted a cabinet or mirror with a light attached, electricity would need to be considered when preparing the bathroom.
How strong are the wall hung sanitary items for bathrooms? If you prefer everything to be off the floor you need to choose wall hung sink units and W.C.’s. If installed according to their instructions they will be as sturdy as a floor based unit.
How easy is it to fit a wet room? For a competent plumber/bathroom fitter this is fairly easy. With a wet room there are more items to add to the bathroom suite when costing. The floor has to be completely watertight and there are a variety of options with regards to the drain in the shower area. Most plumbers will advise on inspecting the room if a wet room is an option. A waterproof membrane has to be installed and primed onto a marine-ply based floor. There are many beautiful all glass options for showers to give that wow factor to a wet room. When installing a wet room stainless steel radiators/towel rails are a must due to the humidity and water in the bathroom. Painted items will over time begin to corrode.
Can I hide my toilet cistern in the wall? Yes this can be done in one of two ways. The first is to have a cistern frame that is recessed into the wall (presuming there is depth in the wall to be able to do this) or a unit is built around it and plasterboarded so it looks like part of the room. The second option they now come in is a boxed cover so it looks like part of the furniture. All that is visible on both is the flush plate and the toilet bowl.
If I cannot fit a wet room what is the easier option? Another option would be a walk in shower that still has a shower tray but is a low profile with a lip of only 3040mm, still giving the effect of a large flat space and a minimal look. Shower trays are now available in colours to match floors. This is a very popular option and the shower designs are frameless allowing easier cleaning. The glass panels are fixed using steel arms to the wall for superior rigidity. Most bathroom companies will have these items on display to view.
&
“This gives a very contemporary look and makes cleaning a whole lot easier.”
What is the most minimal look for the taps etc..? The only way to have no tap holes in baths, sinks and showers would be to have all the pipework hidden in the walls, and the controls are flush on the wall. This can be done for baths, taps and showers where the control for temperature, and changing the dial to divert to different items e.g. from bath tap to shower head are required. With bath taps you can now fill the bath from the overflow (bath filler) on the side of the bath where no taps are required. All you need is the valve control on the wall. This gives a very contemporary look and makes cleaning a whole lot easier! The Radiator & Bathroom Gallery Ltd, 140 Hermon Hill, South Woodford, E18 1QH. GARDENING
Britain has over 50 varieties of butterflies but unfortunately these pretty creatures are becoming rare. Encourage more butterflies into your garden by creating a butterfly paradise. Choose some of the following scented plants: Lavender (Lavandula), Honesty (Lunaria annua) and Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii).
WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON
A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.
W
elcome to the beautiful summer time gardening month of June. A busy rewarding month filled with many daily gardening tasks. Begin dead heading your flowers to keep them flowering for much longer. Instead of soaking the whole of your garden concentrate on prioritising and watering certain plants first like the ones growing in pots, containers and hanging baskets as these will dry out very quickly during the warm weather. Now is the time to keep a watchful eye out for any signs of pests and disease and take action before any problems spread out of control. Now the fear of frost has gone bedding plants can be put out and planting up your hanging baskets can now begin. These are a vertical unique extension
of your garden and will look fabulous outside your front door, on a wall or even a fence. Follow my step by step guide and create your own unique colourful display. For impact you can select up to 12 plants for a 12 inch basket spacing them 1 inch apart. Choose from the following: _ 1 centre plant - Fushia, Geranium or Verbena. _ 5 plants for colour Impatiens, Petunia or Begonia. _ 6 Trailing plants Lobeila, Bacopa or Dichondra Silver Falls. 1. Baskets come in many shapes and sizes find one that suits your taste. 2. Choose a liner e.g. moss to place inside the basket to help keep the soil in place. If you have chosen a plastic or rattan basket

Mix some slow release fertilizer with some good quality multi-purpose compost and add a scoop of water retaining granules. 5. Fill the basket with your soil mix 2 inches below the rim. Place your central plant in the middle, your colour plants around the central and your trailing plants around the edge. 6. Fill in the gaps around the plants with soil bringing it an inch below the rim of the basket. Push the soil firmly around all of the plants. 7. Put the chains back on the basket and hang it up on a bracket. 8. Water it in well. 9. Water every day and once a fortnight with liquid fertiliser.
PEST CONTROL
Yellowing and disfigured leaves are usually a sign that Whitefly is feeding on the plant cells. Whitefly affect a wide range of vegetables, plants and trees. The adults are tiny, moth-like insects that feed on plant sap. Adult whiteflies usually feed and lay eggs on the new growth of plants, so these areas need to be inspected first. If adults are present, then spray with diluted washing up liquid. Nettings and fleeces can be used to cover your greenhouse vents which will help stop whiteflies spreading to susceptible plants.

HALKIDIKI It may look like an oil painting, but Halkidiki is very real.

ature’s shades are everywhere from the vivid blue waters and lush green flora to the bright azure skies of this glorious peninsula. It marks out this part of northern Greece as something special. Halkidiki is pleasingly diverse. It has true heritage, having been founded in the 8th Century BC and is cited as the birthplace of Aristotle. The area was conquered by the Romans, Ottomans and the Byzantine Empire before becoming part of the Greek Kingdom in 1912. Its tourism credentials are impeccable, and this is the place where many Greek families choose to take their summer holidays. The area has many unique attractions. The Holy Mount Athos

is the world’s only monk republic, practicing a lifestyle that has seen little change since 1453. Its monasteries can only be visited by men, but they can be viewed in comfort by anyone who takes a coastal cruise, which also shows the spectacular rugged landscape around them. Northern Greece is noted for its cuisine, and Halkidiki embraces both local and international gastronomy. Common dishes include Gyros and Souvlaki, and there is a thriving street food scene. An abundance of fruit trees gives the area an unexpected specialty: marmalade. Local producers have an excellent reputation and strong export market. In addition, the local fish restaurants are exemplary.
There are beaches too. Endless expanses of sand means you can choose between fashionable, cosmopolitan areas to catch a tan, or secluded bays and coves bathed in the scent of pine trees and salt brine water - a perfect spot to witness the sunset.

Danai Beach is among the best, the perfect place to capture the ceaseless sunshine (up to 13 hours per day) and high temperatures (averaging 77°F) of summer. All rooms offer marble floors, air-conditioning/heating, safe, mini-bar, satellite television, CD and DVD player, telephone, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers, Bulgari amenities and internet connection. There are numerous restaurants: the Pavilion offers beautiful sea views at breakfast, the Squirrel is perched on the cliff and is perfect for fine dining, the Sea Horse Grill is a beachfront restaurant and is ideal for

CHICKEN TIKKA

ojan’s award winning Head Chef, Forid Ali, has created a menu that combines fresh and intriguing flavours with a modern twist. You can cook with Vojan’s chefs at the monthly Cooking Club, and these recipes have been adjusted for these events so that you
can replicate the flavours at home. Lots of curries use a ‘gravy’ base, for Vojan’s secret curry gravy, blend onions, carrots, tomatoes and peppers with garlic and ginger paste and Vojan curry powder mix, (available from the restaurant). This Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi recipe is sizzling hot, tangy and bursting full of flavour.
BEST SERVED WITH... The pairing of wine with spicy cuisine gives rise to much heated (forgive me) debate amongst wine lovers, with many claiming that wine and much Asian cuisine simply of ter Toby Webs don’t work together, a cold s ne Black Dog Wi lager being the only sensible recourse, whilst others think that certain wines can work. I tentatively fall into the latter camp. Chicken Jalfrezi is a fairly hot dish, and even if not eye-wateringly so it constitutes an undoubted challenge. However, there are wines which are capable of taking up the gauntlet. I have enjoyed success with dry, crisply refreshing, overtly mineral whites - the thirst-quenching 2012 Muscadet that I recommended with last month’s

fish recipe is a personal favourite with Indian cuisine. An interesting and inexpensive alternative might be a Verdejo-Viura from Rueda, our 2013 Finca Remendio having the requisite cut combined with a lovely ripe fruit. Some argue that whites with a slightly sweeter or richer character are better at coping with spice, and Pinot Gris from Alsace is amongst the most highly regarded in this respect. Whilst at the drier end of the Alsace spectrum, it has sufficient richness to carry the dish. There is a strong argument too in favour of Rosé. I feel that a reasonably full bodied Syrah would work better than the lighter Provençale style much in favour at the moment. Yves Cuilleron makes a particularly compelling example from his lair in the Northern Rhône, a gastronomic wine in the best sense, bone dry but with a ripe, well-structured fruit that arches across the palate, and a lingering finish. COMMUNITY
THE ESSEX FERRET WELFARE SOCIET Y Rehoming ferrets for over 25 years!
W
endy and her husband Alan Brett founded the Essex Ferret Welfare Society over 25 years ago in order to meet other people in Ongar and the surrounding area who owned ferrets, since then it has taken on a life of its own with up to sixty ferrets under their care at any given time. The Essex Ferret Welfare Society take care of abandoned ferrets as well as housing them if owners go on holiday from as little as £5 a night. I met with Wendy Brett and was able to go and see the ferrets for myself, Wendy demonstrates a wealth of knowledge about ferrets and the care that she gives them is unparalleled. She takes in all ferrets where she provides spacious homes for them whether they are guest ferrets or ferrets that she is looking to re-home. The Essex Ferret Welfare Society rehomes between 200 to 300 ferrets per year, Wendy states that sable ferrets are easier to re-home than albino ferrets, she puts this down to ‘the Scooby-Doo effect’ referencing the cartoon in which evil characters had red eyes, giving a lasting impression that red denotes evil. One of the most important issues surrounding ferret welfare is neutering, it is important in order to manage their population as ferrets aren’t equipped to survive in the wild. Neutering also decreases the odour of ferrets which makes living with them more enjoyable. It is important to Wendy that ferrets are neutered also because when they go into heat, if a female ferret is not bred then
By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham. it is at risk of contracting anaemia which could be fatal. It is also important that ferrets are chipped in order to increase chances of finding them if they escape, as stated before, they are unable to survive alone. As ferrets are obligated carnivores, Wendy feeds the ferrets on a meat only diet to suit their needs, this is no cheap feat and The Essex Ferret Welfare Society do a lot of fundraising as they don’t get any funding. Fundraising efforts involve ferret roulette and ferret racing, which they perform at country shows and fêtes, their next show is the Sudbury Country Show at Great Waldingfield on June 14th. If you would like to support the Essex Ferret Welfare Society, they are always asking for teddy bears and other such prizes for their shows and shredded ‘spaghetti’ office paper.

PARENTING
MUM’ S CORNER Discussing parenting techniques in our technology led world
W
By Sarah Mackie.
e hope you enjoyed our first Mum’s Corner last month, and we’re happy to be back with more food for thought, things to do with your little ones in your local area and a pre-natal fitness tip! So, I’ve been thinking a lot about something recently and wanted to share it with you. It’s an inescapable subject and one that every parent will consider at one point I’m sure. Technological devises and children: good or bad? Does your pre-schooler race for your iPad as soon as he lays eyes on it to play games, do puzzles or ‘draw’ pictures? Can she navigate through it with more speed and efficiency than a lot of people of our generation, at just 3 years old? Do you breathe a sigh of relief when your smart phone or tablet deters a tantrum when you’re in a restaurant or on a long car journey with your toddler? I think most of us could answer yes to at least one of those! I can too but I find it pretty daunting. I haven’t had my iPad for a year yet, and I recently read about a chain of nurseries in Bath that teach their preschool children to read through tablets. Not books.

RUGGERBUGS HAVE YOU CAUGHT THE BUG YET?
O
The UK’s premier award winning sports development programme encouraging pre-school children to participate in regular exercise from a young age.
ver the years there has been a significant amount of research into the principles of health and fitness in the early years and it is true to say that patterns of behaviour are often developed during these early years and influence the choices people make throughout their lives. The Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health has stated that physical exercise during the early years is important in “helping to prevent excess weight gain during childhood” and establishing “activity as a lifetime habit”. Worryingly obesity in children has become a serious problem with 1 in 5 children being overweight or obese by the age of 3. With a variety of children’s activities to choose from, RUGGERBUGS is pioneering the way by introducing children to sport from 18 months old. What is RUGGERBUGS? Established in early 2007, RUGGGERBUGS was created as a ground-breaking initiative to get more young children involved in sport. Founder and Managing Director Andrew Peasey believes that participation in sport from a young age is just as important as learning to read and write. RUGGERBUGS are pioneers in developing a FUN and exciting PreSchool Development Programme based around non-contact rugby for boys and girls aged 18 months to 6 Years. It is designed to ensure that each child has a positive introduction to sport by developing and enhancing their basic level of movement, selfawareness and social interaction, as well as introductions into the basic fundamentals of rugby (passing and catching) in a FUN and stimulating environment.
The RUGGERBUGS “Head Start” TM Programme provides a range of skills, drills and games inspired by rugby and specially designed with early years in mind in a safe and non-competitive indoor environment where children can enjoy a weekly activity, make friends and develop a love of sport.
Up to the age of three, children need to be accompanied by an adult. The sessions are designed to make the parent feel an integral part of the activity and enhance the child-parent relationship. As the children move through the programme they develop a growing independence enabling them to complete many of the activities on their own.
How does RUGGERBUGS differ from other pre-school sports clubs? The 45 week programme has a wide range of physical activities based around a weekly “Skill4Life” (educational element) theme. This is supported by the “Sidney Skill Awards” which enables the child, parent and coach to see what progress is being made. The children are able to collect “Sidney Stickers” at the end of each session to stick on their “Sidney Sticker Charts”, not only are these FUN but they help educate the children with words based around sport and healthy living. RUGGERBUGS agrees with the RFU that rugby is a late developing sport (7+ years), it does not teach children how to play rugby but promotes the game at grass roots levels and gives children a “head start” in developing skills which they can later go on to develop at club or school level. The programme lays down the foundation for developing important attributes such as agility, balance, co-ordination and spatial awareness, As well as these physical benefits, the programme also provides the opportunity for the child to develop as a person. During each session children are gently encouraged to develop language and social awareness skills, such as, manners, listening, communicating, taking turns, sharing and team work. hen we last spoke I had mentioned the little man’s birthday, but didn’t mention his favourite present. A trampoline. This lovely contraption had to be assembled by hand (how hard could it be?) and so we got the metal bars and screws out of the box, along with the small square bouncing area and the elastic rope to tie it all in place. I promptly threw away the instructions, “Don’t need those luv, I’m a man… get the kettle on, this will be ready when you get back.” My initial concern was that we had clearly been swindled by the company who had only given us a quarter of the necessary rope, sure it would pull and stretch a bit, maybe even reach half way around the frame and perhaps I would just celotape the other side of the mat to the other two sides. Imagine my horror when the diagram showed the rope being pulled through right to the end, looping in and out of holes and creating a bouncing area so tight with tension that we would need a ladder to get him down from nearby trees after his first bounce. During the next nine hours I drunk twelve cups of tea, lost countless knuckles and a couple of fingers as I tried to pull and loop the elastic rope through the mat and around the frame to secure it in place. Eventually my blood soaked hands were gently raised aloft in triumph by the Mrs (who had been watching on, encouragingly laughing throughout) and I just hoped the boy would be as delighted with my efforts as I was. He came out and walked straight past it in order to play with some daisies on the lawn. I began to sob and sat down next to the trampoline to rest my aching body, it was

at that moment I realised I had neglected to screw the handlebar to the base (maybe the instructions would have helped after all?). I decided this would best be done with some assistance so I roped my brother into the madness. After many more hours we lay exhausted on the grass, but then something lovely happened, we could hear the faint sound of laughter by the trampoline, as I crawled towards
“Remnants of my broken fingers flew off the mat .” the sounds (looking like an extra from Saving Private Ryan) I peeked up and could see the little fella bouncing happily, remnants of my broken fingers flew off the mat but he carried on with a cheery face. I began to smile and rest my eyes once more, knowing my fatherly duties had been fulfilled. The next day we decided on a family day out to the local soft play house, he promptly flung off his shoes and launched himself head first into the ball pit like a baby Tom Daley. When he surfaced his face beamed with pure joy, his arms smashed up and down like an angry chicken and he ran over to the climbing nets. It was at this point that I felt the need to venture in and make sure his enthusiasm didn’t extend to launching into other kids with his flapping chicken arms! So, off came the trainers and I staggered in. What I hadn’t thought about was my size (6”2 and 15 stone) and in my keenness to catch up with him I immediately went through a small tunnel to where he was playing.
Well, I say “went through”… what actually happened was a tad more embarrassing, as I became stuck precisely at the point where the tunnel has a perspex viewing window. The ever growing crowd of parents were finding it hard to stifle their chuckles (to be fair I’d have been crying with laughter and pointing) and I could only muster a polite nod as both arms were also trapped. I felt like tinned pilchard, a right pilchard in fact! Luckily the firemen were not called (well, unlucky for all the single mothers I guess) and a couple of the other dads gave my feet a stern nudge and it popped me through, my humorous quip of “Crikey, that’s worse than childbirth!” went down like a lead balloon amongst the women in the room, whilst the men dare not smile. It was time to leave. I threw down an anchor into the ball pit and hoisted the boy up 2 minutes later, said our goodbyes and left. The following day he was back at nursery. After picking him up in the afternoon I got to hear about his day out at the library from the nursery staff, ha! The library!? Why on earth would they take my little Tasmanian Devil into the silent sanctuary of a library? “How was he?” I ask knowingly, “Erm, well… he was a little hard to catch.” Hahaha! I could picture the scene already. The other kids sitting quietly on the play mat listening to the calming ways of Winnie the Pooh, whilst little man whizzes around the aisles in search of another ball pit on his ‘day out’ as the silent readers look on aghast. The little lad is very happy and has a lot of energy, but I think we need to calm him down a tad when it comes to library time in future! ...TO BE CONTINUED

“T
he thing with swimming is, if you’re not careful it will take over your life.” These words were spoken to Gary Inch when he first started helping out at Sans Egal Swimming Club and fifteen years later, he has found this statement to be true. With Paul Robbins leaving at the end of June, Gary Inch is preparing to take over the A Squad during the interim period before they find a new coach. While this may seem a daunting task for most, Inch is confident that this change can bring a new chapter to the club and new chance for collaboration and improvement. LBRSC was founded fifteen years ago with the amalgamation of Ilford, Redbridge and Sans Egal Swimming Clubs with the goal of creating a sole swimming club for the borough in order to promote swimming in the area. The future will see the club get more schools involved as swimming has been somewhat neglected in Redbridge. Since its founding, the club has had great success in the county as well as on a national scale. Current member Craig Moat holds seven world records and Ryan Nichols is a junior disability champion and is being put forward for the GB Podium Programme which will allow him to take his swimming to the next level.
Nationals 2013 LBRSC take on swimmers from the age of nine, Squad C will train them up to their progression to Squad B which will prepare them to start training to compete and then Squad A which will have them training at a competitive level. They train alongside the ASA National Plan, a curriculum which first teaches fundamental swimming knowledge to learning to train. From there they will be training to train, training to compete and then training to win at a competitive level, upwards from there a swimmer will start to train to their specific field. LBRSC host three meets a year which bring in upwards of £25,000 which helps pay for pool time as well as swimming support. They work closely with Vision, Redbridge’s Culture and Leisure board in scouting talented swimmers as well as teaching lessons. LBRSC also have strong local affiliations, they are sponsored by Costa Coffee and Barclays to name a few, this speaks volumes for the community basis that it has been founded upon. Further information can be found at www.lbrsc.org.
We wanted to put Mum’s ashes somewhere special. We chose to bury them under a 30-foot oak. Even though we chose cremation for Mum, it was nice to find out that we can still have a beautiful final resting place for her ashes at GreenAcres Burial Park – Epping Forest. It is the most beautiful and peaceful place and somewhere we like to come back to and remember her. It’s open and staffed every day of the year so we know that her special place is being looked after, even when we are not there, by staff that really care. Mum would have appreciated that. You only get one chance to say goodbye so we made sure it was just right. A sense of place for a lifetime of memories Visit www.greenacreswoodlandburials.co.uk/epping to download a brochure or book a visit on-line.
