o, our World Cup is over in an instant, didn’t even get out of the group! Oh well, at least we are traditionally better in the cycling, and that’s great news because this month sees the Tour de France sweep through Essex and even includes the ‘Speed Race’ through Epping High Street where we shall be watching the British sprint specialist Mark Cavendish with great hopes. Aside from the race we are also looking at health issues regarding carbs, swimwear fashion, the Dream Factory charity and much more! We are also launching our 2nd publication shortly, called ‘The Loop’. This will be distributed to towns throughout the loop section of the central line (Gants Hill, Redbridge and so on) so look out for that in the next couple of months! Hope you enjoy this issue, see you soon. P.S. Good luck Andy Murray!

South Woodford resident Claire Andrews has been working hard to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence. Claire has been collecting second-hand clothing and donating them to local refuges. These items are handed out to people who have fled an abusive domestic situation, often leaving home with only a small bag of belongings. She is also running on the Refuge team in the British 10k in July. Claire was once a victim of domestic abuse herself, but found the help she needed and courage to leave the relationship from Refuge and the police. Claire said, “I wanted to raise awareness of the charity Refuge, they do an amazing job supporting women like myself when fleeing a domestic abusive relationship. Since witnessing 1st hand of what refuges are like, I have wanted to give back for the help I was given, mainly raising awareness to women and men who like myself didn’t know where to turn to for help.” Please donate on Claire’s just giving page: www.justgiving.com/ Claire-Andrews83. If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic abuse then help can be found at www. Refuge.org.uk. National domestic violence helpline: 0808 2000 247

The donkeys will be ready and raring to go for Theydon Bois’ Donkey Derby on July 13th. The annual event, organised by the Theydon Bois 1 st Scout group, regularly attracts 4,000 visitors to the Green to watch children race the recalcitrant donkeys around the track. The jockeys - who have to be aged between 10 and 15 and weigh less than 50kg - very often fall off on their way round while others manage to get their stead cantering to the finish. Spectators can bet on the mule they think will win or ‘own’ a donkey in each of the seven races. There is also a fun family dog show on the day plus the Scout v Guide challenge in the arena. LOCAL BUSINESS GROUP
AWARDS GRANT A
Essex Central Magazine wins support from Chigwell Business Group
s part of an initiative to support new local businesses, Essex Central Magazine has been awarded £1000 funding by Chigwell Business Group (CBG). Encouraged by CBG, a number of local start-up businesses approached the group having heard about the unique support on offer via social media and local publications. It has been officially announced that Essex Central Magazine will receive the £1000 grant, whilst the group will continue supporting other local start-ups with advice and networking opportunities.
WHY ESSEX CENTRAL MAGAZINE?
Phil Gautier, Chairman, CBG, and partner at Carter Clark Insolvency Practitioners, said, “This has been a really interesting pilot scheme.
14
ESSEX CENTRAL
It’s built on the basis of already established local businesses who are members of CBG helping startup businesses which they feel have real potential. Historically, support for start-ups has come from the public sector but this is from a local
“It has been officially announced that Essex Central eive Magazine will rec the £1000 grant” business group, the members of which have all gone through the teething problems that every new business faces and as a result can provide moral support and
worthwhile advice to a new venture. “The group was really struck by the hard work and drive of Darren from Essex Central Magazine and by the reputation the magazine has quickly gained. He passionately believes in what he’s doing, is keen to network and help others - and it’s a really great read!” Darren Perry, Editor, Essex Central Magazine said, “Anyone who has started a business will know how reassuring it is to have help with covering overheads in the early days. But it’s not just the grant which has helped us. I’ve already made some great contacts at CBG, won business via the group and would have become a member whether we received the grant or not. I am very grateful to all at CBG who have helped make the magazine what it is today.”

BUSINESS THROUGH PARTNERSHIP
Q CBG celebrates its 10th anniversary later this year. Q Whilst the group continuously welcomes new members and visitors, a significant number of founder members remain. Q It is estimated that in excess of 100 local businesses have been supported by CBG over the years. Vicki Hambly, Vice-Chair, CBG, and Marketing Manager at N2 Visual Communication, has been a member for eight years. She said, “Like most business owners, members have a network of contacts - suppliers, clients, etc. The premise is simple - a member will describe the prospects they would like to be introduced to and we collectively do our best to make that happen. And it works. There is no pressure, leads are passed
between members on a Friday morning - as well as outside of meetings - simply because we want to help each other.” Jon Barrett, founder member of CBG, and Owner of Albion Web, agreed, “Aside from the access to
“another bonus to being a member is the access you have to the l-sets expertise and skil within the group” contacts, another bonus to being a member is the access you have to the expertise and skill-sets within the group. I keep members updated with weekly tips and advice on how
to improve their internet marketing and my own business has certainly benefited from the unique wealth of experience around the table.” CBG meets for breakfast at 7.30am every Friday at Woolston Manor, known locally as a prestigious wedding and events venue, as well as a championship golf course. Membership is made up of local businesses and some which are further afield, and has a ‘one member per profession’ policy. There is a one-off £90 fee for membership and £45 per month thereafter to cover catering costs. Visit www.chigwellbusiness.co.uk for more information or contact Chairman Phil Gautier for an informal chat on 020 8524 1447.

TOUR DE FRANCE
LET’S
GO!
Le Tour de France races into Essex.
F
By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham
or the first time in the history of the race, Le Tour de France is routed through Essex, the third stage of the race starting at Cambridge travelling to London via Essex. Le Tour de France is the world’s largest annual sporting event, its history dating back over a century to 1903, the race takes place over 22 days covering 2,175 miles which will all be witnessed by spectators the world over. The Grand Départ takes place in Leeds on Saturday 5th July. Stage One of the race is from Leeds to Harrogate, finishing in time for Stage Two on the 6th, racing from York to Sheffield in preparation for Stage Three, in which cyclists will be racing through Essex. 2007 saw the Grand Départ take place in London, 2014 being the first year since then to have the race start in England. Around 15 million people take to the streets to watch Le Tour de France and the Grand Départ and its subsequent stages will be full of opportunities to see the cyclists, especially British hopeful Mark Cavendish take to the streets. The past two years have seen Brits Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome take the podium in first place so there is great reason to be hopeful for a third year victory. In 2007, 2 million people turned to
the streets as spectators of the two day stint in England and this year more are expected due to the location of the Grand Départ as well as Le Tour’s three day spell in the country. As the Essex trail is on the last day, expect an influx of tourists and spectators around, many cycling clubs and local businesses will be holding events and organising spectator posts in conjunction with Le Tour. Since 2012 and the influence of Bradley Wiggins, cycling has seen an huge surge in popularity in England, more and more people every day are cycling to work and training for races such as the Prudential 100 and the BHF London to Brighton. Le Tour will surely see a new heightened interest in cycling, not only in young people but recent recognition as a great outdoors exercise has had adults and older people in the community visiting their local bike shops. As Le Tour races into Epping Forest, be sure to get on the route and witness the most prominent race in a cyclists calendar, even if cycling isn’t your bag, the excitement and community spirit will ensure that a great day is had by all. See you there! For further information about Le Tour and where to watch it, visit www.eppingforestdc.gov.uk and www.walthamforest.gov.uk

Q Nowadays, a growing trend for larger kitchens with a dining table or informal living area has had an impact on the way conservatories and orangeries are linked to the home. Q If the conservatory is to accommodate a new kitchen or openplan living area, then access provided by a single door will be inadequate. Q Opening up the back of the house into the conservatory requires substantial structural alterations, which although perfectly feasible will mean planning regulations apply. Q From a simple modern lean-to to an elaborate Victorianstyle room, there’s a huge choice of conservatory designs out there. Discover the options on offer, and how to choose the right one to suit your lifestyle and your home. Q Don’t just fill the new found space with clutter, make the new found space a place for relaxing, dining or entertaining, maximise it all year round and you’ll wonder why you never invested sooner also adding value to your property!

LET THE
SUNSHINE IN! Can’t afford to move house? Can’t find the right house? Then why not improve your existing home with a conservatory.
T
By Gemma Brooks
he addition of a conservatory is usually a more cost-effective solution than moving. Also, conservatories enable us to make the most of the garden whether it’s raining or not, so it’s easy to understand their popularity. A conservatory is a great way of increasing the living space in your home and in some cases doesn’t require planning permission. They can be professionally installed from around £10,000 and is reasonably fuss-free. Conservatories fall into two broad categories: contemporary and traditional. Contemporary conservatories have clean lines and unfussy frames. They can be pitched flat or lean-to-style roofs. They’re usually simple square or rectangular structures. Traditional conservatories take their inspiration from historical structures. There is broad agreement on each style, but it’s vital you look at the particular designs and work of your chosen supplier to make sure your interpretation is the same as theirs.
What shape and size do you want? Conservatories are often thought of as just rectangular or square, but they can also be a ‘T’ or ‘P’ shape. The size depends on what you want to use the conservatory for. If it is a dining room and you want to be able to entertain six to eight people, you should be considering a room measuring 4m x 3m. What type of frame do you need? There are several types of conservatory frame and some bespoke companies may offer you a mixture, such as aluminium on the outside, but wood on the inside, giving you less maintenance hassle. With a vast array of windows, doors and conservatories it can be hard to decide what would be right for your home. Look no further than Bennbrook Windows who offer double glazing, conservatories, porches, replacement windows, glass, balustrades, entrance doors, bi-folding doors, french doors, patio doors. Bennbrook Windows have been awarded membership of the extremely prestigious WHICH? TRUSTED TRADERS scheme. This scheme is designed to give you the peace of mind to know that your project is in safe hands.
“A conservatory is a great way of increasing the living space in your e home and in som cases doesn’t require planning permission..” When choosing the glass for your conservatory it is essential to get goodquality windows which Bennbrook will provide, as this will ensure you can use your conservatory all year round and save on heating or cooling costs. The glass should be double-glazed, specialist safety glass and be able to keep the heat in without ‘over heating’ the conservatory (such as Pilkington K Glass or Reflex Glass). Ensure that it is laminated glass for security and to reduce the strength of the sun’s rays. Make sure that your conservatory is well secured with high standard locks and panes that can’t be taken out of their frame. GARDENING WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON
A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.
J
uly is a very rewarding productive month in the garden but try not to be too relaxed as the battle against the weeds begins. The most effective time to remove weeds is when the soil is damp. The best and most effective method to remove weeds is when they first appear by hand if you can. Pull the weed from the base of the main stem. If your weeds regrow, then you have a persistent root you will need to dig out. Remove as many root pieces as you can. You should also be cutting the lawn weekly. If you notice any bare spots in your lawn this can be the result of heavy foot traffic which causes the soil to compact. Other reasons could be drought, disease, weed or insect infestation. Before you sow new grass seeds you need to find the
source of your problem first. This will help prevent it from happening again. If heavy foot traffic is the reason then you may want to consider installing some stepping stones. If disease or insects are the cause most garden centres sell products to be applied before you sow. Once you have discovered the cause follow my step by step guide to repair. LAWN REPAIR 1. Break up the top layer of soil on your patch using a rake or a hoe, this will make it easier for the grass seed to take root. 2. Add some topsoil and lightly rake over the area to even it out and to blend it with the surrounding grass. 3. Scatter the seed by hand. 4. Protect the seeds by spreading a thin layer of topsoil over the area. Your newly planted seeds will need to be protected
until they take root. Avoid walking on the area and keep children and pets off. You could make a temporary wire fence around the area to protect it. 5. Water the soil well using the mist setting on your hose pipe. Don’t use a strong jet of water, or you might wash the grass seed away. Water the seeds every day. Twice on a hot day. The seeds should emerge within 10 - 14 days. My favourite summer time flowering annual is Nemesia they come in a wide range of colours from white to deep purple. They have pretty little snapdragonshaped fragrant flowers that will continue to bloom until early autumn. By Amenity horticulturalist & gardening committee member of Copped Hall and Epping Horticultural Society Victoria Robertson
Cornflower, Lavender and Penstemon are some of the bumblebee’s favourite flowering plants. When the bumblebee moves to another flower of the same species, some of the pollen is transferred to the female part of the flower (the stigma). The pollen grains germinate and grow down to the ovules, allowing fertilisation to take place. Limit the amount of chemical use to protect bees.
PEST CONTROL
Usually you will find caterpillars on the undersides of leaves that have been munched. If you see damage, turn the leaves over and look to see if caterpillars have caused it. If you see them pick them off as they can strip a plant bare of its leaves. Cutworms (above) are usually green, brown, grey, or yellow soft-bodied caterpillars with stripes.

orsica truly merits a description as wondrous. An island mix of spectacular scenery, it has thriving culture, deep historical roots, fabulous cuisine, beautiful villas, a blend of Italian and French flavours and yet always inimitably Corsica. It will capture your heart. It is an island of immense beauty that is truly an exceptional holiday choice, close to the UK, relaxed and slow-paced, making it a very low-stress destination. Unspoilt and uncommercialised, the coastline is made up of an alluring array of around 200 beaches - from picturesque coves with clear turquoise waters to chic seaside resorts; while its spectacular mountainous scenery stuns.

Corsica also has a distinctly exclusive feel adding to its charismatic charm and makes it stand out from other Mediterranean resorts. While being governed by the French, it shares a strong Italian flavour as well as having its own very distinct personality. It can welcome everyone: families, couples, old or young - whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday, or perhaps an exploratory tour of the island, a romantic break in the heart of one of the atmospheric citadels or a more energetic experience such as cycling, walking or water sports.
FOOD AND DRINK
The island’s cuisine is French and Italian but features many things distinctly Corsican. Food and drink are taken very seriously and it is quite common for locals to take a leisurely three-course lunch accompanied by a few glasses of local wine. This means that standards in restaurants are
TRAVEL CORSICA
Main: West coast Corsica, Inset: Omleto village generally high. The earthy cooking takes its inspiration from the land, with sun-loving fruits and vegetables, cured meats and cheeses. On the coast you will find a good selection of fish and seafood. Look out for red mullet (rouget), sea bream (loup de mer) and crayfish (langoustine). Oysters (huitres) are particularly recommended in the east, and trout caught in the unpolluted rivers is a good alternative to meat inland. Wine lovers won’t be disappointed with several very good wines that are hardly known outside the island. The grape harvest is still often cut by hand and visiting a vineyard for an afternoon is a pleasant expedition. Also worth tasting are local fortified wines, such as Muscat or the darker, sweetish herb-rich Cap Corse.
ACCOMMODATION
There are great places to stay throughout the island. They range from beautiful villas with private pools and awe-inspiring views, to rural cottages, cosy
apartments, family residences and beachfront hotels. Many are located in stunning settings and make the most of the mountain views, quaint villages, horseshoe bays of white sand or picture postcard harbour towns. From small family auberges to the luxury and refinement of elite venues, Corsica has plenty of choice in hotels

t the Garnon Bushes every Friday and Saturday they create a feast from the simple British classic ‘fish and chips’, that everyone is talking about. They use only the very finest fish brought in from Grimsby every weekend. The emphasis is on thickly cut ultra fresh cod loin or haddock which is coated in seasoned flour before being battered with their very own home made beer batter using one of the guest ales. When deep fried to perfection the ‘whale’ of a fish is then served with crisp freshly cooked chips and diners can choose between mushy peas, garden peas or a side salad and of course no fish and chips would be complete without tartar dipping sauce and lemon wedges - perfection!

The wine region of Rueda is located in North-Central Spain on the bleak Castilian plateau, just straddling the famous Duero River. The centre of a thriving wine industry in the Middle Ages, the vineyard was ravaged by the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century, following which it went into steep decline. Replanted in the early 20th century with the Palomino variety, used largely to produce fortified wines in the image of Sherry, it remained unknown to the wider wine world until the 1970s, when the Rioja firm Marques de Riscal began to produce a white wine from the traditional Verdejo variety. modern white wines made with varying proportions of Verdejo, Viura and the ever popular Sauvignon Blanc. Finca Remendio is a 50/50 blend of Verdejo & Viura. One of our most popular inexpensive white wines over the last half decade, with the just released 2013 vintage it has finally gained the presentation that it has always deserved, with an elegant, fresh and contemporary label design. The wine itself is as moreishly delicious as ever, a pale green gold colour with aromas of white flowers, cut grass and a splash of cool water on a hot summer’s day. In the mouth it is intense and fresh, with notes of citrus and green apple and a lovely, crisp acidity which carries through into a lingering finish. At 12.5% it has a relatively modest alcohol, which undoubtedly contributes to the impression of a certain lightness of touch. It disappears from the glass alarmingly quickly! It conforms very precisely to the kind of wine that works beautifully with simply prepared fish and

THE DREAM FACTORY Making dreams come true
Avril Mills
O
n June 13th 2014 it would have been Avril Mills son’s 24th birthday, it was also the day of the announcement that she is a recipient of a British Empire Medal for her charity efforts. Avril lost her son to leukaemia when he was just nine years old and is her inspiration for The Dream Factory. In 2008, after working with Haven House, Avril opened The Dream Factory and in the short amount of time they have already granted 279 dreams for children with life threatening illnesses and severe disabilities. With such a limited staff, Avril has only two part time employees and a few volunteers, 279 dreams in six years is an astonishing amount to have granted. Avril’s success with The Dream Factory is very much to do with her use of money; she is supported by South Eastern Electrics and is able to use their offices and has another volunteer maintaining the
website, so almost all of the money is going towards the children and their respective dreams. The Dream Factory receives no government funding and so it is Avril’s responsibility to do all of the fundraising herself and with three dream requests coming in per week, it is a task that she takes very seriously. The Dream Factory caters from ages 3 to 25 and so requests are diverse, a popular request is to visit Disneyland Paris and meet their favourite characters, there is also a lot of demand for iPads which can be used during treatment. Some of the most difficult dreams to grant are the meet and greets with favourite footballers or popstars due to scheduling difficulties however children have been able to meet Gareth Bale and Robin van Persie amongst others. Georgia’s wish was to see One Direction which was granted at Wembley Stadium, her mother is also a volunteer at
The Dream Factory. With a long list of patrons, if available everybody is happy to help out, Avril has strong affiliations with Ray Winstone and Patsy Palmer both of who, if in the country, will go to great lengths to see that dreams are made reality. Dream requests come into The Dream Factory in a number of ways, through the website and they are known to all hospitals and hospices, community nurses play a huge role in locating dreams. The Dream Factory grant wishes nationwide however due to limited resources it is impossible to fundraise in other places. Upcoming on their schedule is the Brentwood Golf Day and the Monte Carlo Charity Ball which still has tables to fill. The Dream Factory needs volunteers, raffle prizes and sponsorship in order to continue doing the fantastic work that they are doing. For more information please visit www.yourdreamfactory.org.

PARENTING
MUM’ S CORNER With the rise of both childhood obesity, and conversely, childhood anorexia in the UK, how do we, as parents, ensure our children have a healthy relationship with food? Sarah Mackie fleshes out the weighty issue.
W
hen the King’s Lynn based parents were arrested and charged recently for child abuse and neglect over their 11 year old son, who weighs 15 stone, it gave me food for thought. How much control do we really have, as parents, and how do we not tip the scales by drawing too much attention to body image, enticing
the slippery slope into the bony claws of eating disorders? Recently, I saw a little girl, not more than 6 years old, who was seriously overweight. She was waddling uncomfortably, wearing too tight clothes and eating a lolly, next to her mother, who was of a similar constitution. Being really honest now... I looked at the mother in disgust. Inside, I was sneering. “It’s not your right” I wanted to shout “It is not up to you to map out this child’s life”…for not only her physical health, but her self-confidence, physical ability, and choices in life would be wholly limited. Of course, I looked away, told myself off for being so judgemental and employed some diplomacy to my thoughts. Maybe there are health issues, maybe she has the ‘fat gene’, metabolic problems, hormonal imbalances or psychological issues, it wasn’t fair of me to judge. But I did. Not the child, but I judged the mother immediately. As the girl grows up, so she will be judged too, and discriminated against by our society, and if you ask me, that
absolutely is a form of cruelty on the part of her parents for allowing it to happen. On the flip side of this chilling coin, is the mounting concern over the growing numbers of children suffering with eating disorders. Great Ormond Street reported that 50 children aged between 5 and 9 were admitted with eating disorders in 2012, and the numbers are growing. I also know from friends who are primary school teachers that girls as young as 7 are anxious about their weight. As somebody who has felt the cultural pressures surrounding body image myself, and as a mother, particularly of a daughter, I desperately want to protect her from all this. Thank goodness “fat” and “thin” are not in her vocabulary…but how long have I got? She goes to nursery, she has friends…how can we keep them away from this complicated pickle us silly adults have gotten ourselves into? Have we created a generation of gluttons and narcissists? What a preposterous first world problem!

ENTERING FATHERHOOD
WITHOUT A MAP
S
o, me and the lady are slowly waking up to the sounds on the monitor “Mama….Dada”, ah that’s nice to hear, him safe in his cot, whilst we smile to each other at how our little boy is growing up, then… BOOM!! A loud crash echoes through the baby monitor and we go sprinting into his bedroom, only to find him out of the cot and walking towards us! Clearly the little Houdini has now learnt to escape the bars and fling himself over the edge like a drunk high jumper at only 13 months old. We run through our options, “Do we need a cage? What about glue on his mattress? Lead weighted pyjamas?” …in the end we settle for a baby sleeping bag, which means he can’t hoist his legs over the side of the rails, and so far…it’s working. Although I’m sure the Blu Tack I secretly put on his pillow is also keeping him in place. In fact Blu Tack is what we should replace our carpet with because the little man’s new routine is spinning, constantly. I don’t know if he’s mimicking his bathwater as it goes down the plug hole but it’s like trying to live with a small tornado. It’s a big loud spin too, arms spread wide and a deafening yell to go with it, along with a cheery smile in between gasps of air. His arms seem to catch everything as he spirals past, with people losing bits of food that were about to enter their mouth, or having drinks knocked from their lips “yaaaaayaaaaaayaaaaahhh!” and on it goes, until dizziness takes over. So, today we decided we would take him to Southend beach and Adventure Island, we headed onto the shore and he started sprinting ahead of us, it was like a dwarf version of Baywatch as he bounded forward in red trunks heading straight towards a

group of girls. Before I had the chance to yell, “Hey ladies, that’s a lovely sandcastle you’ve built there” he had trampled straight through it and legged it with their bucket and spade. The mini thief was now approaching the water, he flung the bucket at an unlucky seagull (dislodging a greasy chip) and ploughed into the sea with a face of joy. What then arose from the salty blue sea was a teary face of confusion as he started trying to
“he had trampled straight through it and legged it with their bucket and spade” spit out sand and water whilst I stood beside him with a towel about to pick him up. He looked at me, then back at the sea, and went in again. I had to admire his drive, he wasn’t going to be beaten, and I started to fear for any crabs or local sea life (the kid literally eats anything). I picked him up and headed back onto the beach and the safety of a small paddling pool, full of calm children, gently pushing their little sail boats around. The boy began spinning as soon as I put him in, mothers looked on in shock as their children started to be drawn into his funnelling whirlpool of noise, “Yaaaaayaaaayaaaaah!!” like some kind of ritualistic dance for Neptune. He actually had a great time splashing in the water and the only issue came when trying to get him out, he stayed in the centre of the pool, giggling at me trying to beckon him to the edge where I could get him until I ventured in after him almost slipping on a bunch of seaweed.
I decided it was time to hit the rides so we got him a wristband and the attendant said those magic words, “Adults go free with a baby”…I couldn’t believe my luck, I could go on loop the loop rollercoasters, death drop inverted slides, and high octane g-force catapults. My joy was short lived however when it was made abundantly clear that I would only be allowed on the ‘red rides’, I looked hopefully to see some red signs at the entrance of my dream attractions, only to find myself 20 minutes later stuck in a queue for …the teacups. I let out a mild ‘whoop’ and shuffled further along as some toddlers ahead dismounted from the slowly circling cups. As we sat down his face lit up, the sun was beaming directly at him. I quickly shielded the rays and he was a happy little chap as the ride began to move, smashing his hands up and down on the safety bar with such force it looked to be bending in the middle. Next up was the flying elephants, ours struggled to get off the ground as it publically proved I need to lose a little weight, all around us kids cheered with joy as they flew up and down, whilst our own elephant simply scraped along the bottom, looking tired and confused as sparks flew from under its small plastic tail. Indeed, poor Dumbo had lost half of his behind by the time I removed mine. We soon went through all 15 ‘red rides’ and he’d had a great day with me and my dad. On the way home found ourselves stuck in traffic once more, but thankfully the little lad was asleep and smiling as he dreamt, no doubt recalling the memories of his first day at the beach. ...TO BE CONTINUED

or cyclists on the border of East London and Essex, Crest Cycling Club (Crest CC) was founded in 1932 with a focus towards road races, time trials and social rides. In the eighty two years since its humble beginnings, it has managed to maintain the same values with the help of a dedicated team and the enthusiasm of club members. Since the Beijing Olympics the club has seen a surge in interest and members, however many of its members have been in the club for more than twenty years, thus showing the community spirit of Crest CC. Crest CC is a part of British Cycling as well as the Eastern Road Racing League (ERRL), who organise races in the East of England. One of the conditions of joining the ERRL is that each club hosts their own sportive and Crest CC’s race is the first of the cycling season, beginning in March, this race is 85 miles long. Alongside the ERRL racing season, the clubs hosts rides a few times a week and each Sunday members can complete a 60-80 mile bike ride in the Essex countryside. Aside from competitive cycling, Crest CC adds a very active social dynamic to cycling; offering weekly 50 mile social rides on top of an annual training tour to Gran Canaria and trips to Le Tour de France.

This year they will be making the journeyCM to Leeds for the Grand Départ and the MY first stage of the race. An important aspect of cycling both CY socially and competitively is road safety and when members initially join the CMY club, they go on ‘club runs’ which teach people how to ride in a group as well as K on the road. It is important to learn how to ride in a group as to ensure that the team can get a feel for the road ahead, this includes avoiding potholes and knowing when to break at junctions. Crest CC also give advice on races, Tony Harvey is a qualified coach who is able to help people getting into racing as well as monitoring progress. The club boasts international competitors and success in the ERRL, James Samuels has finished first twice, once at Dunton. Adam Norris, the Junior Cycling Champion was trained and rode with Crest CC. Crest CC are always open to enthusiastic new members and ideas and upon joining the club, new members are encouraged to tell the club what they are hoping to get out of cycling and how they feel they can be supported.
