LAUNCH OF LOUGHTON ART TRAIL
d Arts
y an phen Pewse ganiser Ste Rhodes Art Trail or ne ia D ager Centre man
The countdown has begun for Loughton’s first Art Trail. From 6-14 September there be will local artists’ displays at various venues around the town, and a range of pop-up events, including meet the artist, street chalking, a children’s trail and quiz, and a historical display telling the story of Loughton’s rich artistic heritage. Loughton has a thriving visual
arts scene with several art clubs; at its heart is Loughton Arts Centre, which has showcased local talent for the past five years, and is solidly booked up for the rest of the year. The Arts Centre - which is part of Lopping Hall, the town’s “cultural hub” - is fast gaining a reputation as an artistic stepping stone; a number of exhibitors have gone on to stage major shows of their work in London. Organising the Trail is former Loughton mayor Stephen Pewsey. He commented “This is a new event, so we’ll be starting small, but we hope the Trail will be fun and inspire everyone to grab cameras, pencils and paintbrushes, and bring out their inner Michelangelo!”
Loughton has attracted artists for centuries. Poets, playwrights and painters have all been inspired by the ancient majesty of Epping Forest, and the great oaks and hornbeams still dominate the skyline in much of the town. To name but a few, sculptor Jacob Epstein lived on Baldwins Hill with a panoramic view of the treescape, designer Walter Spradbery incorporated images of the forest into his iconic London Transport posters, while painter John Strevens made subtle use of forest motifs in his landscapes and portraits. THREE YEARS AND GOING STRONG FOR PEGASUS MILITARY FITNESS This month sees the third birthday of a local fitness company who are building up a great reputation for dynamic, original and fun classes in Loughton and the surrounding area. Co-founded by an elite Airborne forces soldier and a black belt kickboxing instructor Pegasus Military Fitness has been bringing their blend of motivational, exciting hour long sessions to a real cross section of the community. “We cater for anyone who wishes to improve themselves and value determination over current fitness levels” explains martial artist and Pegasus instructor Barry Watkins 48, “we are lucky to have a 2012 Olympian train with us
regularly as well as serving soldiers but our group ranges from 18 to 70, we don’t put coloured bibs on people and we don’t split people into groups by their ability, everyone trains together and we subtly adjust the sessions to suit the individual”. Watkins goes on to say that the social aspect of group fitness is a major part of keeping people engaged, training regularly and making new and lasting friends. “We regularly have curry and drinks evenings, picnics, rafting days and of course lots of challenging muddy obstacle races which bonds people together very
effectively as well as focusing their training.” he adds. So if you’re feeling you need a new fitness regime, want to lose weight or train for a specific event then Pegasus`s Thursday’s 7pm session at Roding Valley High School sports hall could be for you. BOON LOTT ELEPHANT SANCTUARY Providing a safe and natural home for Thai elephants. By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham
Katherine Connor with Lotus
“BLES is an idyllic home for these rescued elephants as they are allowed to just live” 14
ESSEX CENTRAL
K
atherine Connor has always loved elephants, citing her favourite childhood toys as a pair of elephants which have now been replaced by the real thing at her sanctuary in Thailand. The Boon Lott Elephant Sanctuary was founded in 2005, after a chance meeting with its namesake, Boon Lott led to Katherine devoting her life to saving these magnificent animals. After finding success in retail management, Katherine Connor, from South Woodford, decided to take a once in a lifetime trip to Asia in 2002, six weeks into her nine month stint, she found herself volunteering in an elephant conservation centre and hospital. Upon meeting and forming a close relationship with baby elephant Boon Lott, her love was awakened and she realised she had to do everything in her power to spend her life with elephants and learning everything she could about them. During her elephant education, she became aware of their vulnerability and was overcome with a desire to help.
Elephants are free to graze
BLES was founded in memory of baby elephant Boon Lott, Thai for ‘survivor’, this premature baby was to be sold to a tourist establishment at six months old, however being separated from his mother too early would be detrimental to his physical and mental health, Katherine raised the funds to rescue Boon Lott and be by his mother’s side with the ‘Rescue Baby Babar’ initiative. However shortly after, he suffered a fall leaving his hind legs paralysed, Katherine then raised the money for a hydrotherapy pool and she administered Thai massage and acupuncture daily to aid his recovery and slept with him every night. On his second birthday, Boon Lott received the world’s first elephant wheelchair with help from Chiang Mai University which aided progress and he was walking unassisted every day, however he suffered a fatal fall which snapped his femur and he died in Katherine’s arms on June 26th 2004. BLES is a sanctuary for rescued and retired elephants, where they are treated with the dignity and respect that
they deserve. Elephants are a beautiful and loving species and while they are endangered, many elephants are made to work undignified jobs in order to survive their owners, these include performing in chains and illegal logging. Their poor life quality, bad diet and long hours leave them malnourished and beaten down. BLES is an idyllic home for these rescued elephants as they are allowed to just live, BLES is a notable sanctuary as they don’t make the elephants work or give rides, they can wander, graze and socialise with other elephants as they please. Katherine has strong feelings about other ‘sanctuaries’ who make elephants work and wear chains dubbing them liars as they are mistreating the elephants as well as their visitors, “Anyone who claims to be a sanctuary, and yet offers rides, shows, painting and tricks is lying. I feel so sad for the tourists as most of them want to travel with morals and not support a typical camp. Sadly, the camps have twigged on to this and are now using key words on their websites,
such as, ‘eco friendly’, ‘welfare’, ‘freedom’. This is misleading to tourists trying to plan their itineraries and I have met many people over the years who have been tricked and trapped by the lies.” BLES only allows for six visitors at any given time in order maintain a peaceful atmosphere for the elephants. Rescue missions are a priority of Katherine’s and her team work hard to rescue as many elephants as they can. These missions can take months of preparation as it isn’t always easy to raise the funds with dealers changing their prices, it is heartbreaking when a mission fails however it only makes Katherine more determined; this is the reason that BLES must go on. Katherine is an inspiring woman and the legacy she wants to leave is kindness leading by example, which she achieves every day in her work. BACK TO
nch
Sarah Ly
I
Sarah Lynch, a local Secondary School Teacher and mum of three gives her view and advice for the next school year.
t’s that time of year again, no sooner have you felt the sand in your flip flops, the ice cream on your tongue and you start to...relax, there you see them. First one, then two, then they’re everywhere those three little words that can fill people equally with both joy and dread... “BACK TO SCHOOL”. Rather like Christmas, it seems to start earlier each year, this time from about the first week in August.

ESSEX CENTRAL
DECISIONS, DECISIONS
Recent press reports have suggested that the average parent spends between £500-£900 getting their little darlings ready for their next big educational step and if they are starting university then you can up the estimate to at least £1000. So, what to do? Apart from the myriad of choices available from 1D rulers to Angry Birds pencil cases and to buy or not to buy the Lelli Kelly shoes that look just like all the others but come with... MAKE UP and cost three times more, because, “Mum, everyone else will have them...” What about the bigger concerns? Will my child be bullied, will they fit in, have friends, will they learn anything, will they be happy, will they have their heads flushed down the toilets and perhaps secretly, “Will I be judged a rubbish parent”?
RELAX!
Above all, relax, if you are stressed out, more than likely, your child will pick up on that stress. It’s easy to say but really, they WILL be OK. At the end of the day, what really matters isn’t about what trainers they have or who is on their pencil case, they will find the friends that don’t care about that and are more concerned with their Loom Band skill level.
PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
Suggestions would be, for the practical ties, get as much uniform as possible from the Supermarkets, the recent price war is good for parents, the basics such as polo shirts, socks and undies should not cost the earth! You can even pick up trousers and skirts cheaply. You don’t even need posh name labels, a Sharpie on EVERYTHING
will be your best friend. Also make sure everything is NON IRON! You will be grateful of this on a Sunday evening when you realise you have run out of trousers! Purchase generic plain lunch boxes and water bottles, the kids can customise them with stickers themselves, this makes it more personal, fun for them and cheaper.
CONCERNS
As for the big concerns, the golden rule is always TALK! Talk to your children’s friends, their teachers, their friends’ parents, but most importantly to your children, How was your day, what did you do,
“The average parent spends between £500-£900 getting their little darlings ready for their next big educational step” anything you need, anything interesting happening? Try to be as active a part of their school life as possible whist remaining a decent distance so as not to be “embarrassing”. Most children go through their school lives happy and content but there is lots of help out there if you are worried about signs to look out for in terms of anxiety, stress and related issues. Most importantly, Don’t Panic and Good Luck!

PAIN
olisticare specialise in Myofascial Release, which is a treatment developed by an American Physiotherapist called John Barnes. All three of their therapists have trained with him in America, making Holisticare one of the few specialist centres in the UK. The myofascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that holds every cell in your body in its place. This 3D network gives us strength, flexibility and stability meaning that no part of the body exists in isolation. The myofascia solidifies and shortens in response to any kind of trauma, repetition of movement or ongoing poor posture. It will slowly tighten, spreading tension throughout the whole body. As we are so good at compensating, most people don’t notice their bodies gradually getting tighter. We accept that aches and pains develop and don’t seek treatment for them. A lot of the time we carry on tying ourselves in knots without any major problems. As the myofascia tightens, it puts increasing pressure on nerve endings, which then cause pain and
other symptoms such as numbness and tingling. It can also upset our autonomic nervous system which regulates the function of our internal organs and affects things such as our heart rate, blood pressure and digestion. The myofascia is thixotropic, which means that it changes state and becomes more fluid in response to warmth and pressure. This comes from the therapist’s hands as they are working, and they can feel the change in your tissues. The treatment involves them following the releases as they occur, allowing them to work with your body to unravel the restrictions. So they are able to very gently release the layers of the myofascia and change even very old problems without forcing or damaging your body. Myofascial Release is also very effective for athletes before and after training and competitions. It helps to loosen muscles, which reduces the chance of injury, and clears lactic acid after exercise. As it is such a gentle technique, you don’t have to endure the pain of a sports massage. Obviously Myofascial Release
One of Holisticare’s tretment rooms
can’t cure everything but there is a good chance that it can make a difference to most symptoms that people present with. Many of Holisticare’s patients have tried lots of different therapies with limited success before they come to them. By working with their bodies, they are able to help conditions that are often hard to treat. The Holisticare treatment centre was purpose built in June 2012 and is wheelchair accessible with free parking next to the building. It is located in Hatfield Broad Oak, near Bishop’s Stortford. THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FITNESS
Swim, cycle and run your way to fitness with triathlon training. By Fitness Expert Jez Godlonton
I
n 1982 while on holiday in the South of France in Nice I watched a sport that kind of grabbed my attention. There were a bunch of guys that dived into the Mediterranean, swimming like mad men then getting straight onto their road bikes to climb up the Alps, then if that wasn’t enough when they got back down to the beach they ran 20 miles along the promenade. At the time I was living what some people call ‘good living’ with smoking, drinking and eating anything and everything, so the possibility of me doing anything like that was nowhere on the charts. Who would have thought ten years later that I would turn my life around and actually start competing in triathlon events myself? In 2003 I actually won the Corporate Games triathlon event for my category and now love helping others to change their lives to achieve similar goals. Today the sport of triathlon is much more popular than when I first heard about it. People are also much more aware today of the health benefits of extreme sports as well, like the popular Tough Mudder events, which are basically an army assault course for the general public. So what is triathlon? SWIM, BIKE, RUN in that order. Tri means 3 so it’s 3 events rolled into one, meaning it’s nonstop from start to finish. The distances vary from the sprint distance (750 metre swim, 20k bike and 5k run)
www.fat2fit.me.uk
to the gruelling Ironman distance (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, then run a marathon 26.2 miles). My good friend Ivan Newman took it to another level when he completed the Arch to Ark in 98 hours which incorporated him running 86 miles from Marble Arch to Dover, swim the Channel then cycle to Paris. Ivan is a great believer that the mind can conquer anything which he certainly did in this case being over 50. The best way to train for a triathlon is to either get yourself a trainer or join a triathlon club. You could also join a swimming club and get yourself a bike and start doing some block training sessions doing bike runs, just so your legs can get used to running off the bike. The good thing about triathlon is that you’re always challenging the body with different aspects. With running you get excellent cardio fitness but it is high impact. You can balance that out with cycling and swimming which is also a good cardio workout and is low impact so much healthier on your joints. I also use suspension straps to keep my core muscles in good shape which is also good for posture and muscle strength. This sport certainly gave me a new purpose in life and helped me not just in my health and fitness which gives me quality of life but also helps me in almost everything that I’m involved with which requires discipline and goal setting.

DO
BODY WRAPS REALLY WORK? Amanda u o Anastasi
L
Amanda Anastasiou tests out the new Shrinking Violet Wrap on five of her clients.
et me introduce you to the new slimming technique everyone’s talking about - the Shrinking Violet Wrap from Tibby Olivier. It promises to reduce body size after just one treatment, with celeb fans such as Danielle Lloyd using it to get her postbaby body in shape. I know what your thinking... Impossible, it can’t be that simple! Well we have put it to the test on 5 women and can safely say it really does work!
THE TREATMENT
So, how does it work? First, there’s the cleansing stage. For 2-3 days prior to the treatment you need to stay away from alcohol, caffeine and fatty, processed foods. This is done to cleanse the liver, making it healthy for the treatment. Now for the scientific bit! After prepping the skin with a body brush, a mixture of grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, lavender essential oil, juniper essential oil, cypress essential oil and juniper berries is applied to your skin. This special blend aids phosphatidylcholine, which is a chemical that triggers lipolysis,
breaking down fat in the body, which will then be processed by the liver. You have to keep hydrated with drinking water before and after the treatment so the liver works effectively by processing more fat, resulting in an increased weight loss. The treatment requires you to then be wrapped tightly but not uncomfortably in a roll of film. This creates a barrier around the treatment to ensure your body absorbs all the minerals. Just lie down for an hour and allow the oils to sink into your skin and that’s it! An hour later you should have lost at least 3-10 inches! As amazed as we were, we weren’t happy to just send the 5 ladies home without monitoring whether the inch loss actually stayed off. We invited them back for another wrap, before applying the solution we measured to see if they had put any of the inches back on and not one person had! The continued treatment lasted for 6 weeks with inch loss every week. If you would like to book a Shrinking Violet treatment please visit www.finessesalon.co.uk
HOW MUCH WILL I LOSE? The amount of fat reduction varies depending on your build, but many people may reduce by at least one whole size after the first treatment or 3-10 inches. Immediate results can be seen. After your treatment it continues to work in the body for a further 72 hours. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? Slight increase in urination for one to two days after treatment. WILL THE RESULTS LAST? Shrinking Violet is an excellent jump-start to a new and slimmer you. For the fat to come back, a person has to be eating excess calories. You do need to team the wraps up with healthy eating for the best, long lasting results. IS IT WATER LOSS? No, it’s not water loss, its inch loss. You are encouraged to drink water straight after your treatment as this aids the treatment. HOW OFTEN CAN I HAVE THE TREATMENT? We recommend having a treatment once a week for 6 – 8 weeks.

INSPIRING IDEAS FOR EVERY
ROOM How to style your living space with key furniture pieces and handy storage solutions.
S “For a hint of sophistication, sway towards designs that exude elegance” 36
ESSEX CENTRAL
o, you’ve chosen your paint shade and got your wallpaper sorted, but you’re struggling to decide on furniture and those all-important finishing touches? Planning to redecorate is exciting, but being your own interior designer can be a little daunting too. Keep calm, with a little guidance as well as a few easy tips and tricks from furniture experts Fishpools, styling your desired look isn’t as difficult as it seems. Whether you’re a fan of modish, modern design or prefer a more classic and traditional aesthetic, we’ve rounded up our favourite ways to personalise and bring beauty to every corner of your space - whatever its style and size. Follow these tips on how to create your very own flawless home:
DINE IN STYLE
The dining room is the perfect place to entertain guests, so it’s important that your scheme creates an inviting ambience to while away the hours. For a more formal setting that is sure to impress, opt for a table with clean lines, such as the stylish Kato. This modern extendable table not only provides flexibility when it comes to hosting but works well in both a classic and contemporary space. For a more laid back, country feel, choose a round table such as the wooden Campton with stunning natural grain, and pair with super comfortable button back chairs. If you desire an on-trend eclectic look, mix and match a few statement chairs adorned in bright colours for plenty of impact.
HOME GARDEN
STOCK UP ON STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Keeping on top of organising your belongings can be tricky and it’s no secret that in order to banish cluttered chaos, storage is key to ensuring a room remains functional. To keep order and possessions neatly out of sight, introduce storage with versatile, concealed compartments such as drawers or hidden shelving for a super tidy and streamlined look. Storage can also be an attractive focal point. Choose interesting pieces such as vintage travel trunks or stack old suitcases for that retro feel. Not everything has to be hidden away when it comes to storage. Showcase your favourite collectables with stunning open shelving such as the striking Mammoth unit with its cool zig-zag design.
GIVE YOUR LIVING SPACE A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
If you have chosen a neutral backdrop, don’t be afraid to cover walls and large surfaces with soft tones that will allow colourful furniture and accessories to really pop. Introduce vibrant hues such as zingy greens, oranges and yellows on rugs, sofas and cushions. To complete the look, pick patterned pieces like the new Matrix Max Rugs to break up larger blocks of colour and complement furniture such as the Camden Sofa range. Use smaller accessories in an array of citrus shades to accelerate this sophisticated look.
ADD AN OCCASIONAL CHAIR
Whether it be for an unused corner or a fabulous main focal point to your scheme, an occasional chair will always
&
make a great addition to any room. Occasional chairs come in an array of styles and sizes, so it’s worth deciding if you’ll be opting for pretty over practical before you pick your design. For a hint of sophistication, sway towards designs that exude elegance. A beautifully bowed chaise longue upholstered in a rich velvet fabric is a fabulous choice, while stylish highback chairs with tapered wooden legs and button-back detailing will suit contemporary spaces. For a truly inviting feel that’s both cosy and chic, complement an occasional chair with an extensive range of sumptuous cushions and throws.
CREATE AN INVITING SLUMBER
An easy way to create a new look in your bedroom is to start by replacing a key piece such as the bed and its mattress. However, before you start picking the style, seek the advice of sleep experts, such as the Fishpools’ bed team, who are on hand to advise on which options will provide you with a rejuvenating and supportive rest. A bed frame will give you more options when it comes to design and those with beautifully ornate detailing will make a real impact. Divans will often come with built-in drawers and are great at maximising bedroom storage. A headboard can then be added to make a style statement, along with beautiful bedding and a selection of decorative soft furnishings to maximise cosiness and comfort. GARDENING WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON
A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.
S
eptember is a busy month for the gardener, as the changing seasons bring many new jobs to your doorstep. Keep your garden looking attractive through to autumn with my gardening tips for September. _ During this month you will begin to notice that the summer bedding is starting to look tired and a little worse for wear. Revitalise your tubs and baskets with some pansies, small conifers, violas and grasses to help add some autumn colour and interest. _ Move any shrubs that have outgrown their space. _ Raise the height of your mower blades as grass growth slows down. _ Begin planting springflowering bulbs such as
daffodils, crocus and hyacinths. _ Keep deadheading annuals and perennials to extend their performance. _ Start to divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools. Make sure you keep watering them in well.
Store seeds in paper bags
_ Collect seeds from perennials and hardy annuals to preserve your favourite flowering gems until next year. Seed pods should be picked when they begin to change from green to
a tan or brownish colour, and develop a brittle texture when the seeds inside are ripe. Place them into brown paper bags and store in a dry, ventilated location for a few weeks to ripen further and continue the drying process. Don’t forget to write the name of the plant on the seed bag. Once the pods are completely dried, seeds can be taken from the pods. Kitchen sieves can sometimes come in handy to help you sift the actual seed from the other dried bits of plant material. The fully dried seeds now need to be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Written by Amenity Horticulturalist & gardening committee member of Copped Hall and Epping Horticultural Society Victoria Robertson.
The bright red adult lily beetle feeds on the flowers, leaves and stems of the lily. An infestation of lily beetles in the garden or greenhouse can destroy and kill lily bulbs and plants. They can be found underneath the leaves of lily plants. Check leaves regularly and remove any adult beetles by hand.
WILDLIFE WATCH
Hoverflies are important pollinators of flowering plants. They tend to hover near and rest on flowers. There are over 250 different hoverfly species in Britain. Adults drink nectar and eat pollen and some species feed on dead insects. Look out for them hovering near and resting on flowers this month. Many seem prone to entering conservatories and greenhouses too and can quite often be mistaken for wasps.

Heading away from the city, Vinales is in the western province of Pinar del Rio, famous for limestone mountains and tobacco plantations, a great place to learn how tobacco is grown and produced. There are also a number of cave networks that you can visit, hot springs and lots of hiking and bird watching opportunities. Abbotts also recommend Cienfuegos, a charming sea port where the Star Flyer cruise departs from December - March. The city was settled by French immigrants and their legacy remains in the architecture. There is a wonderful botanical garden and the city is home to many of Cuba’s artists and musicians. Trinidad is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring some great paladares (non-state owned and usually family-run restaurants) offering local dishes, and a number of music houses where you can sit and listen, dance and sample the local rum. Sweetness from the strawberry, sweet bitterness from the balsamic, and subtlety from the salmon are playing amidst a range of different textures. We are looking for both sweetness and acidity, some degree of ‘fullness’ but also subtlety, and energy too. It may defy tradition to recommend a red wine to drink with fish, but we have moved a long way from the classic French cuisine around which those rigid rules were bound. Pinot Noir works well with salmon, and well-crafted Pinot carries that combination of sweet ripeness, crisp acidity and soft,

Grown, like great Burgundy, on limestone and clay, it is pure, elegant and balanced, with a cascade of bright yet subtly delicious red fruit flavours. Champagne, and travelled around the wine producing regions of France, falling in love in turn with Provence, the Rhône, and Burgundy. How did you come to run your own wine business? On my return from France I worked for the family company, eventually overseeing wine buying and looking after sales to restaurants and private clients. During this time I passed the Wine & Spirits Education Trust Diploma, taking scholarships in the Bordeaux and Burgundy sections. When the company was sold in the early 1990s, I set up my own wine business, initially running it from
a barn at home, before eventually taking a shop in Epping High Street. When did you open the shop at Ashlyns, and what made you pick the location? The Farm Shop at Ashlyns was established by my sister and brother-in-law, with the beautiful green oak barns built by my brother, so it was something of a family affair. The philosophy of top quality, low intervention and organic foods also fitted in perfectly with my own love of small scale, artisan winemaking, so when the lease in Epping came to an end I took the recently finished Cart Barn at Ashlyns. The shop opened in time for Christmas 2009.

What can you offer your customers beyond what an off-licence can do? Well, in many ways, we offer a lot less, as you will certainly not find any tobacco, soft drinks or confectionary, or indeed anything else that you might find in a supermarket or multiple, particularly in terms of big-name brands. Independents must specialise in order to set themselves apart and survive, and our focus has always been firmly on small, family-run wine producers, people who are obsessed with making the most original and exciting expressions of their vineyards, wines with a real sense of place. The default is low-intervention, organic and even biodynamic, because that is the means ‘towards the end’ of making great wines. Anything else that you wish to add? I should make an important point about value, because with a

MUSIC
L
LIVEWIRE ROCK ACADEMY Release the rock star in you!
ivewire Rock Academy was set up by musicians Simon Baker and Andy Wilson in 2006 due to high demand from parents in their area who were looking for a more proactive music lesson that would resonate with children. The launch school in Bishop’s Stortford was so successful that they’ve since opened outlets in Epping, Saffron Walden and Dunmow. The schools offer a completely new and refreshing approach to music lessons. Concentrating on the core rock band instruments - electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and keyboards, Livewire focus on the rudiments of playing together and playing live, essential skills often missing from peripatetic lessons taught at schools. The onus is on fun, and as such students are far more engaged with the process of learning how to play, and excited by the opportunity of hearing their new found skills in a
live setting with the other students in the school. The weekly lessons are taught in one room, initially unplugged, so noise is kept to a minimum. Students learn on a 2:1 basis (one tutor to two pupils) with Livewire’s skilled music instructors, where they are taught the basics of their instrument. Students progress at their own pace - the tutors spend time with one student before moving to the second and are only taught together if they are moving at the same pace and are at the same level in the course. During the lesson the students are also taught how to play the songs they will be performing at the end of their lesson. The last 15 minutes of the hour lesson feature Livewire’s unique jam session! Everyone plugs in, turns up, and play 3 songs together, fronted by Livewire’s manager and musician Dean Austin.
Songs the students learn could be anything from a classic by the Rolling Stones, a contemporary rock song by a band like Nirvana or Red Hot Chili Peppers, or something more chart friendly by Ed Sheeran or 5 Seconds Of Summer. Every 6 months Livewire hold a charity concert where students can show off their skills to friends and family on a proper stage, in a proper venue. They are also regularly invited to play at local festivals - students have recently played the main stage at Stortford Music Festival and supported Led Zeppelin (actually the concert movie!) and Saffron Screen. The school has been so popular that they are now open for adults too! To find out more, and to book a free taster lesson you can visit the website: www.livewirerockacademy.co.uk or call manager Dean on: 07941 670575.

DAD’S DIARY
In Partnership with
ENTERING FATHERHOOD
WITHOUT A MAP T
his month has been quite up and down (not just on his trampoline either). We’ve gone from a severe bout of tonsillitis to side splitting hysterical laughter at blowing raspberries in my face, amongst other events. So, firstly the tonsillitis, our little man had gone to bed as normal but around 2am we started to hear some strange sounds on the monitor, we had picked up radio Mongolia again... I got the monitor quite cheap and an unfortunate crossed wire means I know the Mongolian top 20 off by heart. We checked on him anyway and lucky we did! His temperature had soared and he was in a very bad way, we thought this was a result of his recent immunisations so out came the Calpol! The next morning he was still poorly so we took him down to the doctors who diagnosed the tonsillitis. This made me feel doubly bad as I had tried to give him a Farley’s Rusk with his breakfast, not the best thing for a sore throat! The doctors gave us some antibiotics that tasted slightly worse than urine and expected our lad to happily gulp it down four times a day. Obviously this became a massive struggle as he immediately became agitated every time we moved the spoon towards his mouth. As soon as he saw the bottle he would cover his eyes with his hands as if this meant we could no longer see him. Through a cheeky system of letting him drink something nice then squirting in a quick dose of medicine and bribery with chocolate buttons, we eventually got the drugs in him and within 48 hours he was back to his normal bubbly self. Very bubbly in fact. His new game, even before he got ill, was blowing raspberries, very loud ones. Unfortunately this was also an amazingly successful way to spread his tonsillitis, and now he had recovered and his throat was better,
62
ESSEX CENTRAL
the raspberries started once more. He found them so funny he would often be laughing with such force that he’d struggle to actually get his mouth into the correct shape to perform the next one. This was very funny to watch, until he would once again find the facial strength and launch another raspberry saliva missile straight at your face... This then became very funny for everyone else. His other trick is learning to turn switches on and off, these can be for table side lamps, or plug sockets, or fish tank lights, basically
“From the outs ide I’m sure our house looks haunted.”
anything at a low level that we have tried in vain to keep him away from. As with all his new ‘skills’ it’s cute at first, “Oh look, he’s blowing a raspberry, oh look he’s turning off a lamp” … until it becomes “My face is covered in saliva and I’ve just missed a goal being scored!” as the TV goes blank. It’s now as though we live in a haunted house, lights start to flicker, radios come on and off and the fish seem to live under a strobe light. Our little poltergeist is laughing as he wanders between rooms looking for switches to push and people to blow raspberries at. From the outside I’m sure our house looks haunted as lamps randomly flicker on and off in different rooms, in fact, with Halloween next month perhaps this won’t be so bad, so long as all the light bulbs haven’t blown by then! I should also mention his growing sense of independence and desire to do things for himself. This is good when he is reaching for the toothbrush, or holding his beaker,
but it can be a liitle tricky when he grabs the spoon from your hand and flings yoghurt across his face, or launches some peas into his ears. Unfortunately ‘dinner time’ is one area where we have to curb his independence a little until he fully masters the angle the spoon should be held at, although he’s doing well with the fork (I’ve only been stabbed twice this week). The other day when he was climbing the stairs he started to actually walk up them instead of crawling, I commented “Well done” at which point he stopped half way up, turned round and started to applaud himself, promptly falling back down the stairs into my arms. Note to self, congratulate him once he’s at the summit! At the end of the month we headed round to a friend’s BBQ and the little man leapt onto the bouncy castle like a child possessed. Giggling as he flung himself around like a mini Tasmanian devil, it seemed like only a matter of time before he would be sick everywhere. Thankfully this never happened, unthankfully it came out of the other end. After the quick nappy change pit stop (no typo there luckily!), he was back bouncing and having fun with the other kids. On the way home he went through his new found repertoire of words, mainly animal based with fish, ducks, pigs and dogs getting a mention “Fiiiish, fiiiishhh, quack quack, quack quack, oof oof, oof oof” for the barking dog, and then a snort for a pig that sounded like he was about to cough up an entire trough of farm food. This ‘end of day’ noise session is also played out just before bed each night, when his eyes are slowly starting to close and you think he has dozed off, he suddenly yells “Oof oof!!” and then slumps back down into our arms. ...TO BE CONTINUED

CLUB FOCUS
EPPING NETBALL CLUB
E
By Devon-Elizabeth Tabersham
pping Netball Club (Epping NC) was founded in 1975 and started by six young ladies for the sole purpose of keeping fit and keeping social. In the present day Epping NC has thirty girls and three teams in competitive leagues throughout Essex. Essex NC play in the Harlow Indoor Winter league which runs from September to April, their First team last year gained promotion to the first division. The Second team plays in the third division while the Third team plays in the fourth division. It was monumental that the First team gain promotion as it was the first in twenty years. The Winter Indoor league meets on Tuesdays at Harlow Sports Centre. Epping NC have two level 2 coaches and three qualified umpires, ensuring that all of the ladies have a full awareness of rules and regulations and therefore enhancing gameplay tenfold. In the Summer league in Stortford, Epping NC came joint third and they also competed in a Sunday league in Harlow, which is a great training platform for the up and coming youth players. Year round, Epping NC meets for training on Wednesdays at St Johns School in Epping. One of the most important facets of keeping netball teams alive is the recruitment of youth players,
66
ESSEX CENTRAL
Epping NC take on players from ages 14 and up. Lisa Matthews, Level 2 coach and Chairwoman of the club, aims to have a team of young players for their first team in five years time, a feat which isn’t impossible however will take a lot of hard work. Lisa is currently confident in the potential of a couple of her players, so watch this space. In January, Epping NC received a grant from the Grange Farm Trust of £1000, this money enabled the team to build a website which has been invaluable to them in terms of recruitment and information enquiries. Flyers are also handed out at events such as the Epping Forest Country Show. At Epping NC, the first night’s training is free, followed by a three week grace period in which it will be established whether one is a right fit for the team. After that, a yearly fee of £32 per adult is paid to the All England Netball Association, which allows for competitive play and also covers insurance plus a quarterly fee to Epping NC of £35 per adult and £20 for juniors. Not only is Epping NC a fantastic way to keep fit, it also includes a great social life, while the teams meet twice a week, for training and games, there are also social events, Christmas parties and year round activities to ensure fun and to keep everybody involved.
