NEW ART CLASS OPENS
A new Adult Art Class opens in Loughton in mid-May designed for absolute beginners to improvers with an easy step-by-step guide to draw, paint and create. Local people who enjoyed TV’s ‘the Big Painting Challenge’ will now get a chance to get ‘hands on’ at the same time as having fun and learning new skills. It will be held at LifeWorks behind Loughton Methodist Church on Wednesdays for three hours with a choice of mornings or afternoons. It’s a part-time course run over 14 weeks. COMMUNITY CHILDREN HOST MOTHER’S DAY TEA FOR COMIC RELIEF
Avon House School children donned red noses as part of the fundraising efforts for Comic Relief. Year 4 children organised an assembly with some clever cameo films where teachers entertained the pupils to a little bit of humour. Year 4 had previously made cakes with red cherries on top which were sold after school. A grand total of £300 was raised from the sale of cakes and red noses. Comic Relief day coincided with the school’s traditional Mother’s Day tea, an annual event in the Children at Avon House School Avon House Pre-Prep calendar. DAVENANT FOUNDATION SCHOOL STUDENT RUNNER-UP IN NATIONAL YOUNG AMBASSADOR AWARDS
A Davenant Foundation School student has been named runner-up in the Lions Club International’s Young Ambassador of the 21st Century awards. James Lingfield was recognised for his contributions to the school’s Boccia team and his charity work. James, 15, gave the £100 he received as the winner of the 2014 Epping Forest District Council Young Citizen of the Year award to Loughton Foodbank. He has also raised money for the Chigwell Riding Trust where he has ridden every weeksince ld gfie Lin es Jam he was four years old.
A couple of years ago James raised £400 for the charity when he walked a mile. Commenting on receiving the award, James said: “I was a bit shocked. People I was up against included a young St John’s Ambulance member of the year and someone who had gone to South Africa to help build a village.” As part of his prize James who was one of the youngest nominations for the award - will be helping to crew a tall ship around Great Britain in summer 2016. Davenant Headteacher Chris Seward said: “The qualities that were recognised in James last year when he was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year award have now rightly been recognised by The Lions club.”
LOUGHTON FESTIVAL RETURNS The Loughton Festival is a 4-week programme of music, children’s events, a history study day, walks, talks and art events, all in some way raising money for this year’s charity, which is Epping Forest Re-Use. The charity, which is based at Bower Hill, Epping saves furniture and white goods from landfill. Its volunteers restore and then sell the items from its warehouse to members of the public to raise money to help needy families in the Epping Forest area. Sue says: “This year’s programme contains many of our old favourites and some exciting new events too.
What we really need now are volunteers to help us run our some of events and lots of people to turn up and buy tickets so we can cover our costs and raise money for our charity.” Highlights this year include a Neighbourhood Watch Safety Day, a study day entitled The First World War and the British Empire, a talk about Sylvia Pankhurst, a disco for under-7s, a drop in event at the Postal Museum Store in Debden, and musical events this year include a prom style event to celebrate VE day, a cabaret event performed by the Forest Musical
Theatre Company, and a return visit by London’s leading organ recitalists: CLESO. Programmes will be available from mid-April in Loughton Library, bookshops, churches and shops. Anyone wanting to help should email loughtonfestival@aol.com or phone 020 8508 2512.

Morning Vinnie, it’s great to see you coming to Essex on the 9th of May for ‘An evening with Vinnie Jones’ and I wanted to start by asking how you got involved with the British Heart Foundation, whom the event is in support of? Well initially they came to me to do the commercial.

Yeah exactly, and that just went crazy when it came out. So now, any charity work I get involved with, I look to split between Harefield Hospital where Tanya (Vinnie’s wife) had her heart transplant 27 years ago, and the Heart Foundation itself which have now saved about 30 to 40 lives because of the commercial.

That must be great to know that your involvement has actually saved lives. Yeah definitely, I see it in the papers all the time, in fact just a few weeks ago there was an article in the papers from a cab driver who said he had a guy go over in the back and “I just remembered Vinnie’s commercial” so it’s great to know that it stayed with people and it’s doing good.

Spring is here, and with spring comes Easter. For some this is a time of important religious celebration and for others it is simply a time to enjoy an extended weekend. Whatever your reason for celebrating we are sure it will involve a few chocolate eggs along the way. Here are three recipes to use up some of that chocolate and make your Easter ‘eggstra’ special.
The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. 1. Place the biscuits in a sandwich bag and bash with a rolling pin until broken into small chunks. 2. Place broken biscuits in a mixing bowl with the marshmallows and cornflakes and mix briefly. 3. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a simmering pan or in the microwave. Once melted take off the heat. 4. Add the butter to the chocolate and stir until melted and combined. 5. Add the biscuits, cornflakes and marshmallows to the chocolate and mix well. Hold back a few marshmallows for decoration. 6. Spoon the mixture into cupcake cases, this TIP recipe makes 12 nests. When melting 7. 1. Preheat oven to 150C/gas mark 3. 2. Gently warm the milk and cream in a pan. 3. Whisk together the eggs, sugar and vanilla essence in a bowl. 4. Gradually add the warm milk mixture to the eggs whilst whisking. 5. Halve the buns and spread with butter. 6. Arrange buns in the dish and sprinkle over the chopped or broken chocolate pieces. 7. Pour the custard over the buns and leave to soak for 15 minutes. Press the buns down into the mixture but leave some parts exposed for crispy bits. 8. Place in the oven for 50 minutes or until set. You may need to cover with foil if the exposed buns become too brown.

Break the chocolate into pieces and add to the cream, leave to soften for a few minutes. 3. Stir the chocolate into the cream until fully combined. 4. Stir in the liqueur or this can also be left out.
5. Transfer the chocolate sauce to a fondue pot if you have one or place the mixing bowl over a small lit candle. 6. Chop your selection of dipping ingredients into bite sized chunks. 7. Place dipping ingredients on a platter or skewer them ready for your guests. 8. Using bamboo sticks dip the ingredients into the chocolate and then your choice of topping.

TOP TIPS FOR THE VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON 2015 By Sophie Vowden, SV Sports Therapy
T
he time has come - after months of training, race day is finally upon us! On 26th April you will be blessed with running 26.2 miles in what I see as one of the greatest marathons in the World! Here are my top tips for race day:

WARM UP Do some light walking, then jogging followed by dynamic, on the move stretching. All of this should have been carried out in your training so repeat this and don’t get carried away by copying someone else’s warm up - reserve your energy!

CLOTHES Take some old clothes with you, which you would be happy to leave at the race start. You need to keep warm once you have been ushered into your ‘pen’ at the start line. You may be waiting there for 30-45 minutes so you need to keep warm. Having old trousers and a jumper with you is ideal, then take these off just before you start running and Charity representatives will collect these items and donate them.

ROUTINE Make sure you are wearing trainers, socks and running kit that you have worn many times before! New runners get ‘sucked in’ to shiny new items and discounted clothes at London Expo and then wear them for the first time on actual race day - BIG MISTAKE! These

can cause blisters, chaffing and other disasters. So make sure you haven’t changed anything, everything you do on race day has been carried out in your training!

NUTRITION Make sure you are sipping water and electrolyte drinks regularly throughout the race - it is probably going to be a warm day, so don’t let the heat get the better of you and ruin your race. Equally do not take on more water than you need, over-hydration can occur as well so find a balance. Take on board your energy gels, sweets and other sugary foods to help maintain your glycogen stores so your muscles have energy over the duration of the race.

PACE Relax and pace yourself - 26.2 miles is a long way to run so make sure you continue to set a steady pace around the course just like you have been doing throughout all your training. Do not get carried away - use your watch to help you, find an official pace maker or make friends with the person next to you and run steady together!

ENJOY IT! Have the time of your life! You are extremely blessed to be running the VLM! Soak up the atmosphere, use the fantastic crowd support to help you get round and open your eyes to the amazing sights you are experiencing... it’s a sight!

What 3 tips would you give a new marathon runner? AF 1. Slowly build up to the marathon. 2. Work out your hydration and food early on in training and learn to carry water. 3. Have lots regular sports massages to prevent injury - you will also get valid advice and tips from your Sports Therapist. JH 1. Get along to a running shop and get fitted out with trainers that are designed for road running and complement your running style. 2. Check out your local running club and join in with the runs! 3. As distances get longer take care with nutrition and hydration to fuel the increased effort.

s the mum of an ever energetic toddler, I don’t get a lot of me time, so when the opportunity to experience the very latest facial from pH Advantage was on offer I didn’t need to be asked twice. I was invited to visit the team at Aroma Spa and Beauty in Shenfield for my pH Advantage Signature Facial. The skincare range and treatments have been developed by world-renowned cosmetic surgeon, and skin-care expert, Dr Barry Cohen. Now I’m in my 30’s skincare has become much more important to me, as has all the scientific bits that go into improving and prolong the aging process! PH Advantage works on the basis that your skin needs to be at the right pH level to receive maximum benefits from the product or treatment you are using. The most effective skincare products have a pH of 3.0 or higher and all pH Advantage products have a level in this range. The team at Aroma were very warm and welcoming, Rykie, the
salon owner, was my therapist for the 90minute treatment. Her knowledge on the brand was second to none, and I enjoyed her step-by-step explanation at each stage of the facial. Rykie has over 30 years experience within the beauty business and it shows! We started with a double cleanse using the Glycolic Gel Cleanser, once clean Rykie performed a lymphatic drainage facial massage with essential oils. Now my beautifully clean skin was ready to embark on its journey. First a good exfoliation using the Polybead Moisturising Cleanser, next, the exciting glycolic pads. These pads have 10% glycolic acid in them and work to resurface and smooth the skin whilst clearing pores, reducing hyperpigmentation and stimulating collagen production...What a power product! I could feel them working their magic straight away with a slight tingling sensation, one where you can feel something is happening, but not in an uncomfortable way. A couple of minutes and the excess glycolic acid is wiped away, ready for my extraction! This is the removal of
any spots that the therapist can ‘spot’. I have to say, Rykie was very kind and said I didn’t need much time spent here and it’s onto the hyuloric Most Moisture Mask. Almost time to come back to reality. My treatment was completed with Lip Advantage around my lip line, Reparative Eye Gel on the delicate eye area, Moisturising Recovery Cream and the Wrinkle Relief Cream, which is full on peptides, and currently the beauty industries hottest ingredient! The verdict? My skin looked plump, fresh and dare I say, almost line free. I’m a convert to this pH Advantage way and have a couple of products on my wish list. It’s not a cheap treatment but I’ve decided that me and my skin deserve a little pampering every now and then. JOBS FOR APRIL
Here are a few jobs to keep you busy this month… _ This month begin giving your garden a general feed. Sprinkle a general fertiliser around the base of all your plants and shrubs. Suitable fertilisers to use are Grow More, Chicken Manure and slow release pellets. _ If you have a lawn now is the time to get out your lawnmower as the first
cutting time is here. Keep the blades high to start with and lower as the spring and summer moves on. _ Start tying in new shoots on your rambling roses, clematis and jasmine. Roses are greedy plants and will greatly benefit from feeding as they come into growth. _ Plant lily bulbs into pots. If you want to get ahead with your summer lily display, you will need to start planting now. By planting them in pots it will give you the freedom Lily Bulbs
to move them around the patio or to help fill in any gaps in your borders when they come into flower.

_ Prune your Penstemons, cut all the old shoots back to the base provided there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves. Cuckoo spit, the ‘spit’ is actually a protective mass of frothy bubbles which provides a wrapping for an insect, called froghoppers, which sucks the plant sap and distorts the young growth of flowering plants. The adult insects are between 4 and 12mms. Remove them from your plants by using a hose with a strong jet of water to wash off the hidden pests.

N
ew Choices for Youth Trust is a Newham based charity which works with young people both in the criminal system and at risk, it was founded in 1985 as the Newham Consortium for Youth by a fledgling multidisciplinary team who were keen to help young people entering the criminal justice system. The current CEO is Marcia Samuels and in the last thirty years it has helped people turn their lives around as well as providing youth support in Plaistow. NCY Trust has four main objectives which umbrella a plethora of developed projects; Supported Housing; Accredited Training; Positive Activities and Wellbeing. NCY’s Supported Housing is called Launchpad, the initiative began in 1994 and is semi-independent living for 16-18 year olds who are leaving care, this is based in Beckton and in these two years, young
people are transitioned into independent living. They are given the opportunity to achieve qualifications, gain employment as well as learning to consider their wellbeing and manage their finances. This project has been sited as a model of good practice by the Centre for Social Justice. NCY “has a proven track record for devising and delivering quality accredited programmes” as a NOCN, Arts Council Award and AQA Registered centre, they have a solid reputation in delivering alternative qualifications, this includes Skills for Young Parents and Introduction to Mentoring Young People which is a necessity in cementing the future of youth work for further generations. NCY Trust work extremely hard to promote mental and emotional wellbeing, they recognise that there is still a certain stigma attached to mental health issues which make young people feel isolated and alone, however bringing this onto
a safe and judgement free platform has proved invaluable to the well being of hundreds of people. Youth work is very important to NCY, while funding for youth projects is limited, they previously set up a fundraising committee for youth sessions and then supported their application to build a youth facility in Plaistow which has become a staple in the community. An example of innovative projects delivered by NCY’ is called Tracks and it helps people who have had their first entrance into the criminal justice system into employment. They
“NCY Trust work extremely hard to promote mental and emotional wellbeing ” also attend schools for Schools Prevention of Offending and Mentoring Services which gives peer support and empowers children to make good decisions. NCY Trust will reach out to schools in Newham as well as neighbouring boroughs. NCY was commissioned to deliver a project called SHINE which helps young people with complex needs into employment; this is delivered in the London Borough of Redbridge. A lot of employers appear to be reluctant to employ young people with disabilities as they think this will cause them a great deal of issues and aids/adaptations. They fail to see the skills that young people bring and the commitment. Employers should ask what young people can do for them rather than the other way round. Kristian Bridge is Manager of Young Adults and Development; he has worked with NCY for ten years, he helped develop BMXtreme BMX Club, “the first club of the Olympic legacy project.” They work with schools and youth clubs to teach riding skills and encourage people to compete in the London Youth Games. To coincide with The Lullaby Trust’s Safer Sleep Week this month’s focus is on just that. As an expectant parent we focus so much on our pregnancy, what to eat, where to birth and what to expect that many of us aren’t as aware as we should be about how to ensure our new baby has a Safer Sleep. We asked Bababoom’s resident Midwife, Becky Elliott to help explain the Safer Sleep points to us.

ot everyone will remember back in the 1980’s when the famous Anne Diamond, the woman at the forefront of morning TV lost her son Sebastian to Cot Death. Anne spearheaded the ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign and the figures for cot death plummeted, it was an amazing result. Since then figures have dropped but have remained almost static over the last few years and it’s time to get the word back out there. SO let’s make this simple and clear. No one has a crystal ball or any cast iron guarantees because that is life but research over decades has shown us that there are 5 key contributing factors to help your baby stay safe. ALWAYS sleep your baby on his/her back, with his/her feet to the bottom of the crib so they can’t wriggle down and over heat. Your mattress should be a firm flat surface and baby should sleep in the same room as you for the first 6 months.

Rooms should be kept between 18-20 degrees, if you’re not sure buy a room thermometer. NO HATS indoors. If babies get too hot they will expel their heat through their head so this needs to be free. No smoking around the baby. In fact babies cared for by smokers, that have never smoked around the baby, when tested their urine carries the toxins from the smoke. If you’re baby appears unwell or has a temperature seek help from either a GP, midwife or A+E, you know your baby so trust your instincts. Sudden Infant Death or SID’s can occur anywhere so that fact that we have referred to it as Cot Death for so many years has probably not helped. With one of the key contributing factors being over heating many new parents aren’t aware of the risk in cars. We are so worried about our precious little ones that we tend to bundle them up to stop them from getting cold, how many of you go on journeys in huge puffer jackets? Babies should be in a thin jacket or cardigan at most

I
t all started to go wrong just after we drove away from the house, we had decided to head to a new shopping centre and I’d tapped the coordinates into the sat nav and blindly assumed we were heading in the right direction. I needed to type a road into the device and punted a vague guess at something I’d read the night before. What I didn’t account for was the various options that appeared and in my haste I’d selected the wrong option. We travelled across the country and without knowing it I had gleefully set off for Dover. My lady was firing a few questionable looks in my direction during the first few miles yet I confidentially explained, “It’s the sat nav darling, it’s probably a short cut”. However, my cheery smile was wearing thin as we started to cross the Dartford bridge as we both knew our required destination was actually north of Hertfordshire. Even I was starting to feel a little unsure at this point and pulled over to the side of the

road to check the sat nav once more. Realising my mistake (I’d left in a rush to be fair and just clicked anything to get us all going) I explained that the shortcut may have been a little wrong, but everything was correct now. We painfully retraced our route, driving past our own home 2 hours later on the way to our destination (another 2 hours driving) and I had to put up with a barrage of abuse. Luckily the

boy had slept through the entire journey and the screams of anger hadn’t woken him. By the time we arrived in Milton Keynes the sun was descending quicker than my confidence in the sat nav, but we strode into the shopping centre and began to start part two of our day. Our boy was now wide awake and sprinting between the different outlets, trying on clothes, eating samples and generally causing chaos like some spinning Tasmanian Devil as he span from shop to shop leaving a path of wreckage behind him. At one stage he stood there staring back at me, wearing 6 inch stilettos and a summer bonnet on his head, whilst eating a hotdog that hadn’t yet been paid for. The pictures we took of him will come in handy for bargaining once he’s a bit older! We soon found a play area for him to let off some steam (in a controlled environment) and he began hurling himself around the soft cushions and down the slides. As we were leaving he ran into an Anne Summers and my heart jumped out of my chest, I leapt in after him and considered grabbing a pair of handcuffs just to slow the lad down! The shop assistant could only smile as I ran in and out of the isles with all kinds of toys jangling behind me and the boy giggled with delight at the chase, “Dad Dad hahaha!”, but it seemed I was the only one not laughing, just wishing the ground would swallow me up. A small crowd had begun to gather by the time I finally reached him, by lassoing him with a pink feather boa (I had to start improvising if I was going to bring him down), and I carried him out like a trophy. The way home was unsurprisingly quick, no sooner
had we set off that we seemed to pull up on our drive, not a word was said about the journey being easier without a sat nav... but I knew what her face was telling me. The little lad had hopefully worn himself out and we got him in the bath to start his ‘evening routine’. After a scrub down (and quite a lot of water leaving the tub) we dried him off and attempted to get him

This even involved the sighting of some sheep on our way home, as a long story merely consisting of two words, “Sheeeep BAAA, sheep BAAAAA, sheeeeep BAAAA”, and so on. We then tried to get him to close his eyes, this request was met with one of the strangest faces he’s ever pulled. He closed his eyes and then pulled up his top lip to expose all his teeth and made a grimacing type of expression that looked anything but relaxed. He then held this for almost a minute before we realised he was also holding his breath, “Stop now mate! That’s it, well done!” The ‘close your eyes, relax and go to sleep’ tactic, had proved nearly as successful as the sat nav experience earlier in the day. After a second bottle of milk he began to doze off, although every now and then would sleepily say his favourite new phrase “Ello maate!” just as I was creeping out of the room. ...TO BE CONTINUED

Entering its 95th year!
ased at Barkingside Recreation Ground (Queen Elizabeth II Field) in Essex, Ilford Catholic Cricket Club is a fast growing and vibrant club with teams in Divisions 1, 3, 5 and 6 of the Herts and Essex Cricket League. The club also has a Sunday friendly side and runs an invitation midweek Twenty20 league. Founded in the social “Catholic Club” of St Peter and Pauls Church in Ilford in 1920, the club is now entering its 95th year. To begin with the club played at Valentines Park throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s, and even continued during the Second World War with the Secretary of the time Francis Lion merging clubs in the surrounding area in order to keep local cricket alive. After the war the club moved to Barkingside Recreation Ground and have been the resident cricket club there ever since. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the playing membership soared and club legend Vic Harris featured heavily in the all-time record books. Some staggering achievements took place with Harris dominating the local cricket scene setting records that stand to this day. The club continued to run several sides throughout the 70’s and 80’s and enjoyed many years of cricket in the Lillywhite Frowd and Smallcombe Sports leagues. The 1990’s were a great time for the club with three league sides in the Essex Morrant league, a Cup Winners trophy in 1994 and the Morrant league title in 1996. Last year the cup winning 1994 team reunited for an anniversary match in a great social day for the club. In 2010 the committee set out a plan

for the year 2020, its centenary year, to develop the club further including the formation of additional teams, improving the facilities and to work as hard as it can on a volunteer basis. Despite a tough period in the mid 2000’s there has been a significant growth in membership over the last few years with the 2nd and 3rd teams reformed and a 4th XI set up for the first time in the club’s history. For 2015 the 4th XI has been accepted into the Herts and Essex Cricket League having played a full season of friendly cricket in 2014. In 2012 ICCC worked closely with Redbridge Council to gain Queen Elizabeth II field status to ensure Barkingside Recreation Ground was protected and sports, including cricket, would be played there in perpetuity. The club is very diverse with players of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, with all members united by a shared love of the game. Chairman Vince Mulholland, who is in his 25th year with the club, comments; “The club has always prided itself on being a social, welcoming and friendly club, but at the same time our teams are very competitive on the pitch and are extremely well respected throughout the Leagues. As a result of these strong values and ethics, we have experienced a significant growth in membership over the last few years and hope to continue to thrive as we approach our centenary year.” With indoor practice from March to May and outdoor training sessions on Wednesday evenings there are opportunities for players at all levels to get involved, regardless of whether you have 1st team experience or you are just starting out.
