STEP BACK IN TIME AT EPPING ONGAR RAILWAY EXPERIENCE A TASTE OF RIO AT BEACHEAST
Soak up a tropical beach atmosphere without leaving London this summer. From Saturday 23rd July to Sunday 4th September the UK’s largest urban beach will feature a vast stretch of sumptuous white sand, a huge kid’s paddling pool, funfair rides, two beach bars and a host of sporting events and activities for all the family. Friends and families can enjoy a Rio-inspired staycation at East London’s answer to the famous Copacabana beach. Boasting one thousand tonnes of sand spread over 2200 sq metres of Stratford Waterfront beside the former Olympic Stadium, with a huge paddling pool, BeachEast will have something for everyone. Screams will be on offer alongside ice creams as the popular rollercoaster and rides return to give thrill-seekers an action-packed funfair experience. After a hard day in the office, cool off with a beer or wine at one of the beach bars or a sundowner cocktail, mocktail or fruit juice or two. What’s more, visit the official Team GB FanZone London at BeachEast this summer to watch live coverage of the Olympic Games from Rio on the big screen and participate in some of the sports that our Team GB stars will be competing in. Hi, Firstly let me say Happy Birthday Essex Central! Secondly I wanted to say how lovely the latest issue is! As a family we have visited everything included in the summer holiday guide. The Theydon Bois Donkey Derby was a great, fun-filled day (although a little nerve-wracking when my son participated in a race), we had a lovely trip to Epping Ongar Railway and plan to return again before the kids go back to school, we have also been boating at Valentines Park and we all had a wonderful time at the beach at the Olympic Park. Thanks for the suggestions, it has made entertaining the kids easier this year! Sara Swailes 18

The Epping Ongar Railway is a great day out - with friendly volunteers, steam locomotives, buses and a wave from the signalman as the train leaves, the railway offers you the chance to experience life as it might have been 50 years ago. The extension from Loughton to Ongar was built 150 years ago and later it became the eastern end of the Central Line. In 1994 London Underground stopped running services east of Epping. Since then the railway has been lovingly restored with the help of hundreds of keen and friendly volunteers to the fantastic attraction it now is - a heritage railway running steam and diesel trains through 6 miles of the Essex countryside. A short roundup of what’s been going on Photo by Martin Parr
FIRSTSITE LAUNCHES LARGEST UK MARTIN PARR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Contemporary Art Gallery, Firstsite, launched its Summer Season on the 2nd July 2016 with an impressive collection of works by Martin Parr. The exhibition has been especially curated for Firstsite and features over 300 works by internationally acclaimed Magnum photographer, including rare images from his personal collection. It will be the largest exhibition of Parr works in over 14 years. Firstsite Director, Sally Shaw, comments that, “this exhibition celebrates British talent, culture and history that will resonate with a huge cross section of the population. As a site that holds a unique place in the history of the UK, it’s fitting to be able to present such a vast and chronological overview of Parr’s most celebrated works, which depicts how we have lived and worked over the last four decades.” Parr’s successful The Rhubarb Triangle body of work lies at the heart of the Firstsite exhibition and comes directly from The Hepworth Wakefield. The series of photographs clearly demonstrate
Parr’s critical acclaim as an internationally recognised documentary photographer. Inspired by Martin Parr’s documentary photography style, Firstsite are inviting the public to capture the Essence of Essex through their own photographic submissions, which will be judged by Parr. Every submission will be displayed in the gallery on its impressive photography wall to celebrate the community and Essex. The Essence of Essex competition is live and open to any member of the public to enter with no limit on submissions. Prizes include an on location fashion shoot with CliQQ Photography; a yearlong membership to Colchester Photographic Society (18 & over); £200 gift voucher for London Camera Exchange Company and dinner for two and an overnight stay at The Pier at Harwich. To upload an entry, visit www.firstsite. uk.net/page/photography-competition Admission to Firstsite’s Summer Season is free. CRICKETER HITS SIX SIXES IN AN OVER
Epping Foresters Cricket Club opening batsman Andrew French hit six sixes in an over in a recent record-breaking 40-over club match. Andrew, 25, smashed 193 from 110 balls in the local derby friendly match when Epping Foresters hosted Epping Cricket Club at Mill Plain last month. After sharing in an opening partnership of 165 with his father, Peter - of which Peter made just 38 - Andrew went on to hit a career best 193 before he was bowled. His innings included six sixes in one over - a feat which had never previously been achieved by an Epping Foresters player. Andrew’s innings included 12 sixes and 23 fours and helped Epping Foresters reach 312 for 6 in their 40 overs. Andrew’s innings was just seven runs short of the club record for the highest individual score which is held by Stuart Turner who hit 200 at Birchanger in the 1960s. Epping Cricket Club joined in the spirit of the day with their run chase and scored at ten runs an over - and needed 100 from the last 17 overs before Epping Foresters ended up victors by 60 runs. Andrew said: “Every batsman dreams of hitting six sixes. I played each ball as it came. On the fifth six I realised I may be gaining a record; I hit it into the same place.”

NEW CLASS STARTS SEPTEMBER
CHIGWELL SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE A-LEVEL SUCCESS Chigwell School A-Level students have been celebrating their exam results. This year over 79 percent of A-Level grades were at B grade or above and 51 percent were at least an A grade. Of all the grades awarded, grade A was the most common at Chigwell. Twenty-four percent of students achieved at least three A grades; 11 per cent gained at least four A grades, and 5 percent leave Chigwell with five A grades or more. In addition to their three or four A-Level subjects, eight students opted to take the Extended Project Qualification and of these six were awarded an A* grade. Headmaster Michael Punt said: “For the vast majority of students this A-Level success enables the start of university study at some of the most selective institutions, mostly in the UK but for a small number in USA, mainland Europe and Canada. “From the year group of 83 students, seven students will be

Adelaine Frank runs Seasons Art Class which meets on Wednesdays at Loughton Methodist Church. Christine Baker, from Christen Media, reports on what new students thinking of signing up can expect from this established Art Class. Courses run for 14 weeks on Wednesdays at Loughton Methodist Church; on Tuesdays at the Learning Lodge, North Chingford and also an evening class there on Tuesday evenings. Adelaine says “Our classes are aimed at giving everyone a taste of the many elements of creating compelling artwork. We work with each student on a one-to-one basis with step by step tuition. Plus, there is the added benefit of two experienced tutors.” Over 14 weeks four different mediums are explored. Teaching drawing is fundamental in the courses using proportion, perspective and scale. The curriculum is thorough and organised, starting with pencil drawing and sketching, oil pastels, plus painting techniques with water colours and acrylics. Tutoring is based on looking at the old masters and contemporary modern day artists. By the end of the course students will have produced their very own original art which forms part of an exhibition that showcases their new stills to friends and family. Adelaine said “Our courses are now firmly established and many students regularly return. This results in each student developing their own strength and finding their own individual style and voice through art.” Book now for September course. studying at Oxford or Cambridge; six will be studying medicine, dentistry or veterinary science as well as a whole host of other disciplines. “We hope these university years will prove to be fulfilling for the individuals concerned as well as useful preparation for future careers and lives. “We are very proud of all our leavers who have achieved so much. They have some stunning results and are well-equipped to thrive in life beyond Chigwell.” Mr Punt added: “Today’s success is Art tutors Adelaine and Jim due to many years of effort, enthusiasm and co-operation on their part as well as the dedicated support and encouragement of their teachers and parents. “We thank these young people for all that they have contributed during their time at school, we wish them every future success and happiness and hope that they will stay in touch.”
LOCAL NEWS COMMENDATION FOR EPPING ST JOHN’S SCHOOL STUDENT WHO SAVED DROWNING MAN
An Epping schoolboy who saved a swimmer in trouble off the Norfolk coast has received a Certificate of Commendation from the The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK). David Castleman, 14, a pupil at Epping St John’s School, was walking along the beach at Sea Palling while on holiday with his family when someone ran up to them saying there were people in trouble in the water. David, who passed his RLSS UK Survive & Save gold award earlier this year, ran into the sea to help. He said: “I could hear screaming in the distance but dismissed it as people messing around. After walking closer a man approached us and asked for a strong swimmer. I didn’t really think too much, I just took off my shirt and ran into the sea.” Reaching the stricken pair, who were both face down in the water, David turned them over, and realising the younger one still showed signs of life immediately began towing him to safety. David said: “It was quite difficult

because the water was trying to pull you out but I managed to tow him to the shore.” Reaching land, passers-by began performing CPR on the man, and they were quickly joined by lifeguards and other emergency services before the man was airlifted to hospital. Another member of the public rescued the second man but he was later pronounced dead. David received his certificate from RLSS UK’s Community Drowning Prevention Co-ordinator, Aaron Dhanda, at Loughton Leisure Centre
where he learnt his lifesaving skills. RLSS UK chief executive Di Steer said: “We were so pleased to hear about David using the skills he learnt through the RLSS UK Survive & Save programme to save the life of a member of public on his holiday. “Our lifesaving award programmes teach lifesaving rescue, self-rescue and survival skills to all ages, whilst developing swimming ability and fitness. “David is a clear example as to why it is important to have water safety and lifesaving skills.”
BEST EVER A-LEVEL RESULTS FOR WEST HATCH HIGH SCHOOL West Hatch High School is celebrating its best ever A-Level results. A total of 86 percent of all grades were A*- C with 58 percent of grades awarded being A*, A or B. All results are significantly up on previous years. The overall pass rate at A-Level was 99.7 percent with vocational courses excelling. The results mean that many students have gained access to their first choice universities with a number now securing higher level apprenticeships. Headteacher Frances Howarth said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results and so proud of what our students have achieved. All their hard work coupled with excellent teaching from our experienced staff has really paid off. West
Hatch continues to provide a very high quality Sixth Form education enabling our students to have the edge and compete with the best. We wish our students well as many of them now go off to prestigious universities across the
country or take on top jobs and apprenticeships in London.” For more information on West Hatch High School visit www.westhatch.essex.sch.uk or email the school office at admin@westhatch.essex.sch.uk.

CHOOSING THE BEST
SCHOOL
T
Academies vs. Private Schools
he topic of state schools turning into academies is very current. With many local parents concerned about the transition, we look at the strengths of choosing a privatelyowned independent school over an academy.
ACADEMIES
It was a Government directive to convert all state schools into academies until the recent announcement by the Chancellor downgrading this to more of an aspiration. Academies are state-funded schools that receive their funding directly from central government, rather than
16

through a local authority. The day-to-day running of the school is with the head teacher or principal, but they are overseen by academy trusts and may be part of a chain. Academies control their own admissions and have more freedom to use non-Local

Authority approved services. With a lack of guidance and support from the Local Authority and sudden responsibility of finances and curriculum, many new academies have been struggling and some have even closed. Staff have been worried about the changes with fears regarding future pay and conditions, together with the inevitable extra workload with curriculum
developments and concerns about securing future employment if their academy moves away from the National Curriculum. At the grass roots, class sizes are still very large – most in their 30s. Many parents are concerned about acadamisation as, even after some 15 years, it isn’t clear whether academies actually increase academic standards. With classes this large it is difficult for teachers to really know each pupil and any additional needs on a personal basis.
THE OAK-TREE GROUP:
A privately-owned group of local schools More and more families are choosing private education instead of going with the state. One of the most important factors that parents consider is the size of the school. Smaller, nurturing environments offer a more personalised service but can small be too small? Individually the Oak-Tree Group’s schools cater for between 200 and 300 pupils per site, providing smaller environments in which children can flourish. Collectively, however, the strength of numbers with over 1000 children ensures that resources
Left: Competitive Normanhurst pupils Middle: Pupils at Braeside School Right: Pupils at Coopersale Hall Below: Music performance by Oaklands School Pupils
are readily available to continually enhance the education and provide further opportunities for academic excellence. With average class sizes of between 15 and 20, a more personalised education is
within the Group for shared learning experiences, extra-curricular activities or inter-school competitions. Popular events include the Oak-Tree Year 3

possible with each child treated as an individual. Teachers know each child well and can provide support and challenge in each lesson. Over 300 teachers, keyworkers, specialists and support staff are employed by the Group, so there is an extremely high level of expertise, knowledge and shared resources. Pupils get together frequently
overnight Camp, the Oak-Tree Art Exhibition, the biennial OakTree Performing Arts Festival and entertainment for families with the Group Fireworks Display and parents with the Group Summer Ball. So perhaps the new chains of academies can learn a thing or two from this successful Group of local private schools, which has long since established the excellent practice that academies strive to achieve. SUFFERING WITH BACK PAIN? TRIED MANUAL TREATMENTS? IDD THERAPY IS FOR YOU. IDD Therapy is the targeted disc treatment for sufferers of back pain, neck pain and related symptoms such as sciatica. In clinics nationwide, this non-invasive option helps to bridge the gap between ‘hands-on’ treatments and surgery. What is IDD Therapy? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a non-invasive, targeted disc treatment for unresolved back pain, neck pain and associated symptoms such as arm pain and leg pain (sciatica). Available through a network of spinal disc specialists across the UK, IDD Therapy delivers a precise and more consistent treatment than is possible with the hands alone or with traditional mechanical methods like traction.
What does the programme involve? You will be fully assessed before undergoing treatment; this includes a review of a recent MRI or suitable scan.
How does IDD Therapy work? IDD Therapy uses gentle pulling forces to distract (draw apart) specific spinal segments where discs are damaged or bulging, removing pressure and irritation from targeted discs and any trapped nerves. Patients have a structured programme of regular IDD Therapy sessions which allows their body to adapt to treatment whilst progressively relieving pain and improving movement.
Treatment is gentle and safe. Sessions begin with some Thermedic heat therapy on the area to be treated, warming up the muscles and ligaments. You will remain fully clothed throughout treatment and be fitted with a soft, ergonomic harness for comfort and support. The machine tilts upright, allowing you to step on from the standing position without pain or difficulty. Once you are comfortably harnessed, computer-controlled pulling forces are gently applied at

You will feel totally relaxed during the 25 minute session on the SPINA machine. Afterwards, some cold therapy is applied to minimise any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. Gentle exercise and activity are gradually introduced as treatment progresses - essential for long-term pain relief. Who can benefit from IDD Therapy? Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have had back pain, neck pain or sciatica for some time and have not responded to manual therapy and exercise. Reasons to choose IDD Therapy • Your current treatment is not working • You want to stop taking painkillers • You are seeking long-term pain relief • You want to return to normal activities If you have unresolved back pain or neck pain and need help, call Atkins Physiotherapy Consultants on 020 8504 0478 or visit: www.AtkinsPhysio.com

SHOP SMART FOR A HEALTHY
T
Top tips from Heart Research UK
he weekly shop can be a minefield of deals and discounts often tempting us to impulse buy and overspend on less healthy choices. There are so many options on the supermarket shelves that knowing what’s good for you can be a little overwhelming. Filling your basket with tasty nutritious foods will help you build heart-healthy eating habits into your daily life. So follow our tips to shop smart for a healthy, happy heart.
A LIST AND bMAKE STICK TO IT
Make a shopping list before you go and include healthy snacking options that you can graze on throughout the week. Stick to your list and buy only what’s on it to avoid tempting offers that could spoil your good intentions.
SHOP ON AN bDON’T bSTOCK EMPTY STOMACH UP Shopping when you’re hungry makes you more likely to give into the temptation of those high energy unhealthy treats to satisfy your hunger pangs. Make sure you shop when you’re full to keep you focussed on what you really need to create delicious healthy meals.
AT THE bLOOK LABELS
There’s no need to be baffled by the nutritional information; most supermarkets now include traffic light labels on the front of product packaging, helping you to make smart decisions at a glance. Look out for greens or ambers and avoid the reds, particularly for saturated fat, salt and sugar to be sure you’re buying the most heart-healthy options. Don’t be fooled by ‘low fat’ or ‘fat-free’ foods. While they may be low in fat, many are high in sugar. Check the sugar content on the packaging to be sure you’re making the best choice for your heart.
Frozen fruit and vegetables could be the answer if you struggle to use up fresh produce before it goes off or are short on time for preparing food. Pre-prepared vegetables are ready to use in stews, sauces or on the side and, because many of them are frozen so quickly after picking they can contain just as many nutrients as fresh produce. Tins can also be a handy way to keep vegetables, beans and lentils to hand and save you time. Canned fish like mackerel, salmon and sardines can be a convenient way to get your weekly portion of oily fish. Unfortunately tinned tuna doesn’t count as part of your oily fish intake, but try it fresh and get your daily dose of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Choose fish tinned in spring water rather than brine to cut down additional salt intake.
bSHOP LOCALLY
Look around for local markets and independent retailers where you can often pick up delicious fresh groceries, meat and fish for a fraction of the cost. Shopping needn’t be daunting -shake up how you shop and be sure to include a variety of fruit and vegetables as well as lean protein sources and wholegrain carbohydrates. Steer your trolley clear of those unhealthy old habits and put your health at the heart of your weekly shop.

YOUR DINING ROOM
Advice from British furniture experts Bridgman
ometimes the most stylish of homes are the simplest. Clean lines and minimal fuss when it comes to design can make for a refreshing, calming home – creating a space that will stand the test of time. In fact, interior designer’s own homes often follow this principle, with a pared back palette of neutral shades and natural materials creating a muted backdrop that can be easily kept up to date thanks to the addition of on trend accessories. Investing in high quality furniture is key to getting this look right, and here we share some top tips for a new dining room. When it comes to planning a dining room, think about what you really use the space for. If you have a big family or love entertaining why

The Cobham Oval Extending Double Table by British furniture experts Bridgman is a great choice. Bringing a contemporary twist to country style, this piece would sit perfectly in both traditional and modern homes. Crafted in the highest grade European Oak, the table features beautifully turned pedestal legs available in a range subtle paint finishes, from Harbour Grey to Oyster White, topped with a natural wood top to show off the Oak’s natural grain. When the table isn’t dressed for dining, use it to showcase some of your most prized possessions by creating a curated display of books, trinkets and flowers in the centre. When choosing chairs, make sure they are stylish yet comfortable, and remember when using an

extendable table, extra chairs will need to be stowed away or placed along a wall when not being used - so they need to look the part. Bridgman offer a wide range of chairs for their tables, and many would work well with the Cobham table. The Sandown, as shown, can be painted in the same shade as the table or you could choose from a range of complementary shades if you wanted to be a little bold. Dressers are the perfect addition for those with larger dining areas and will provide a stylish and savvy storage solution. Here the Cobham Dresser offers a handy mix of drawers and cupboards ideal for keeping cutlery, napkins and serving dishes within easy reach. The top features shelving with glazed doors and is great for
holding glasses, bowls and plates. For a more current look try not to be too regimented when you display pieces by stacking your bowls and plates. If you really want to stand apart think about the colour palette of your tableware by sticking to one shade or using two harmonizing hues. For a more contemporary look why not consider Bridgman’s Wimbledon Collection? This range of dining furniture truly champions the beautiful oak that has been used to craft each piece. The entire collection, from dining tables to sideboards, have been designed with clean lines to provide an almost retro feel. If you have the space why not consider including a wine rack in your scheme? The Wimbledon Wine Rack is perfectly proportioned and offers space for 30 bottles of your favourite tipples. Don’t forget to dress the top of the rack. One neat idea is to display a piece of art. Simply rest a framed print against the wall, there is no need for a hammer and nail to create a great look.

These images become reality in a country whose ancient values laid the foundations of the world we live in today but, there is more - so much more - to discover. LEMNOS
Elegantly crumbling neoclassical buildings and good sandy beaches lie to either side.
SAMOS
Samos offers such variety that everyone should be able to shape a pleasurable holiday here. With some 160kms of coastline and a rugged Lemnos Harbour
It does exist: an unspoiled island with a very Greek flavour, relatively few tourists, excellent sandy beaches, a characterful port and a direct flight. Lemnos is the eighth largest Greek island and home to some 260kms of coastline. Development here is minimal and tourism is in its infancy. What this means is that even in the height of summer you can find a sandy cove for yourself. If you can pull yourself away from the beach, the island’s capital calls out to be explored. Myrina is a most attractive little town. The harbour is archetypal with a range of cafés and restaurants, and plenty of small shops in the narrow lanes behind.

mountainous interior to explore, you will encounter magnificent scenery, traditional inland villages, small fishing hamlets, established seaside resorts and many fine beaches. The south-west coast, in villages such as Ormos, Limnionas and Votsalakia is an area steeped in history and tradition and is full of life. It is still possible to watch the local fishermen sell their catch from the harbourside in the morning directly to the local tavernas and waterside restaurants - you can’t find fresher than that!
THASSOS
Stoupa, Peloponnese
Thassos Town
Thassos is the greenest and most northerly of the Greek islands, just 40 minutes by frequent ferry from Kavala on the mainland, and in this way combines the attractions of island life with the fertile soil and rich eco-system more usually associated with the Macedonian heartlands.
The island has much to offer including a variety of beaches, from small rocky coves to long golden stretches of sand; its mountains are densely forested with cypress and pine, so a paradise for walkers; and the island is littered with ancient ruins, churches and monasteries. But it is proximity to the mainland which sets this island apart. Day excursions to the archaeological site of Ancient Philippi, the historic city of Kavala and its museum, the cooling Nestos river valley and the atmospheric market town of Xanthi are all on offer. The delight of a holiday in Thassos is that the island has adapted to the needs of the modern visitor without affecting its allegiance to the values and beauties of the past.

my-Beth Ellice shares two fabulous blackberry recipes from her book, Amy’s Baking Year. Blackberries are in season right now, so why not get the whole family involved and go blackberry picking before making these perfect picnic treats.
BLACKBERRY DRIZZLE MUFFINS
INGREDIENTS (makes 12) For the muffins: H 250g (9oz) self-raising flour H 1 tsp baking powder H 50g (2oz) butter H 50g (2oz) caster sugar H 175g (6oz) blackberries, washed and lightly crushed with a fork H Juice and zest of 1 lemon H 2 eggs H 150ml (5 fl.oz/¼pint) milk For the blackberry buttercream: H 225g (8oz) butter
H 450g (1lb) icing sugar, sifted H 1/2 punnet blackberries H 1 tsp vanilla extract METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/400°F/gas mark 6 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cupcake or muffin cases. 2. Sift together the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl. Using the tips of your fingers rub in the butter. Add the sugar and stir in the washed and crushed blackberries, lemon juice and lemon zest. Gently mix with a spoon. In a separate bowl beat the eggs and the milk together with a whisk then add to the flour mix. Quickly stir together with a fork until incorporated. 3. Divide the mixture into the paper cases until three quarters full and bake for 20–25 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Meanwhile, make the blackberry buttercream. Beat the butter until soft and creamy. On a low speed, gradually add the icing sugar in two stages, beating well between each addition. Add the vanilla extract and beat again.
INGREDIENTS (serves 6–8) H 1kg (2lbs 2oz) blackberries H 200g (7oz) granulated white sugar H Zest of ½ lemon H Lemonade or water, to dilute METHOD 1. Put the washed blackberries into a saucepan. Heat them slowly until the juice is oozing. Strain through a sieve to remove the pips. Return the juice to the pan and add the sugar and lemon zest and boil for 30 minutes. 2. Pour into sterilised bottles and seal. To serve, add lemonade or water to the cordial. Amy’s Baking Year is available to buy online and in bookshops & Amy-Beth supermarkets Ellice nationwide.

70 years of lifelong learning
n December 6th Buckhurst Hill Community Association will celebrate its 70th birthday, that being the date of the first meeting of local residents who came together after the war to establish a centre in Buckhurst Hill for social activities and education in a community that, in an era before widespread car or TV ownership, felt itself rather isolated on the borders of Essex and London. The founding of the Association was largely down to two men - Eric Southwell, who had a driving belief in community involvement and action, and the painter Walter Spradbery, well known for his designs (such as
Pottery class
The Proud City) for London Transport posters during the war. With Spradbery at its head, it was no surprise that arts and crafts featured heavily in the adult
education classes the Association began to run, an emphasis which is maintained to this day. At first it had no permanent base, but in 1949 Bedford House in Westbury Road, was purchased by Essex County Council and leased to BHCA, and in the ensuing years the Association built up its activities including fetes, concerts, and the Forest Log Trial, where each year a local celebrity (such as William Hartnell, the first Dr. Who) adjudged who were the happiest married couple in the area. The Trials were held from 1947 to 1958 (with a brief revival in 1977-8), and hopefully their cessation is no reflection on the state of marital bliss in Buckhurst Hill! But the emphasis has increasingly been on the range of classes for adults and children, and although painting, pottery, printmaking and other crafts feature heavily, there is plenty for the less arts-inclined in its courses and one-day workshops, including aerobics, yoga, DIY, gardening, first-aid, family history, psychology, and many more. These classes are open to all (not just Buckhurst Hill residents) and are entirely self-financed - although for years the administrative staff were paid for by Essex County Council, this ceased in 2002 and
now no funding for the education programme or staff comes from any local or national government body. But Trustees and staff are working
Forest Rambles class
tirelessly to ensure the Association, as a self-supporting registered charity (No.301268), continues to thrive and provide a centre for community activities. Local groups meet at Bedford House, its hall and rooms are available for hire, and every year there is a Summer Art Exhibition and fete, and a Christmas Fair with stalls for hire (this year on 27th November.) And 70 years on, BHCA still aims to provide an extensive and varied programme of lifelong learning for all. For further information or a brochure phone the BHCA Office on 020 8504 6668 or email: office@bedfordhouse.org.uk.

DAD’S DIARY

ENTERING FATHERHOOD
WITHOUT A MAP
W
e had decided to head away for a week, 7 days in sunny Spain with the two boys and 5 other family members. I pulled George through the airport on one of those ‘Trunki’ suitcases, which took out the kneecaps of many unsuspecting holiday makers, much to George’s amusement. It was time for the plane, the first dreaded section of the trip, would the boys stay quiet? Would Jake soil himself? Would they both become scared and scream when the engines started? Thankfully they were quiet for most of the journey, except for George loudly shouting “Come on plane!!” while we were waiting to take off. On making our long drive to the villa I couldn’t contain my anger at the various reckless drivers on the roads, I had a family in the back to take care of and these lunatics had scant disregard for public safety, beeping loudly and almost blinding me with their flashing lights. It was only the last few hundred yards where I’d remembered I should drive on the right, but thankfully most of the passengers had fallen asleep by that point. The following morning the sunshine poured through the window like Sunny Delight, and we ventured to the pool side, trying to coax the boys into the pool. Jake was first in, laughing as he clung to the inflatable animals his auntie had bought him. George was still cautiously circling the pool, looking like a duck, wondering how to eat the bread that had landed on top of a crocodile. “Me don’t want to go in”, he said. He’d made up his mind, so I replied, “Ok George, fine, it would be very nice, but you don’t have to”. I had barely finished my response when there was an almighty splash, his arm bands bobbed him back up to the surface and he quickly swam over to a shocked Jake who was riding the back of an inflatable shark, “Me did it, me jumped in!” Later that day we headed into

town and found a lovely restaurant by the harbour, out of nowhere Jake started flirting with the waitress. This seemed to anger one of the waiters who clearly had been trying to also get her attention, yet Jake continued to giggle as she held him up and he dribbled sweet nothings in her ear... and down her top. A passing busker swaggered up playing the guitar and Jake burst into verse, serenading the waitress with ineligible lyrics that seemed to sound exquisite to no one but himself. She did not seem quite so keen now that a crowd was beginning to form and began to back away, undeterred Jake then pulled out the trump card (not
“He dribbled sweet nothings in her ear.”
Donald), but tears, plenty of them, accompanied with a healthy dose of screaming. The waitress couldn’t do anything but come back, and he immediately stopped crying. It was nearing the end of the holiday and I had decided to try some Fly-boarding. Now for those of you not quite sure what this is, I did not run around Spain trying to hit flies with a board, but instead I foolishly attached my feet to a board that propelled a high pressured jet of water through it which thrust me up gracefully into the air for everyone to admire and applaud. It didn’t quite start like that however. I’d kissed my kids goodbye on the shore (hopefully not for the last time) and strode confidently towards the instructors, “How many times have you done this before?” they asked. With fists on hips and a stance boarding on arrogance I shot back a proud “never!” All buckled up we went into the sea and he gave me the technical tips, “When I start the pressure you
will move forward, put your arms out in front as you go along the water, I will then increase it, you tilt your feet and rise up like Superman out of the sea.” It sounded brilliant, I was going to nail this and thankfully I had started to assemble a rather large crowd who would witness my triumph. I could see George proudly pointing me out to the masses and with delusion running through my veins I gave the signal to start the jets. A rumbling of bubbles and I was moving, I outstretched my arms and he increased the throttle waiting to see me rise like a phoenix. Instead I plummeted (at considerable and increasing speed) to a depth of approximately 20 feet, arms still outstretched I gently floated back to the surface as he turned off the jets. “What happened?” I gave him a cheeky wink and a smile with my blue lips, as if to say, “I always mess around on the first go” and he started again. This time it happened, I rose majestically out of the water by about 20 feet, tilting the board back and forth to keep balance and even managed to pull off a Superman pose, a Usain Bolt pose and a Bruce Forsyth pose. It’s a rare occurrence when old Brucie is name-checked alongside those two, but there you go. The crowd were going bananas, whooping and clapping, George looked ecstatic, whilst Jake was still looking for last night’s waitress. After a few more attempts it was time to leave and thankfully it had been an overall success. The holiday had now also come to an end and we headed home the next day. After a long journey we finally reached Epping once more, and on putting the boys to bed a small piece of paper came floating out of Jake’s pocket… with a phone number, a kiss and the words, “Call me in 20 years time”. The cheeky rascal. ...TO BE CONTINUED
