STALL HOLDERS WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS FAYRE
Stall holders are invited to take part in the Christmas Fayre being organised by Waltham Abbey Town Council. Organisers are appealing for people to run stalls selling Christmas gifts, including foodstuffs such as cheese and pickles. The Fayre, complete with a Santa’s Grotto and two live Reindeer, is being held in Sun Street, Waltham Abbey - the main shopping street on Saturday, November 26th (10am until 3pm). For more information, ring Waltham Abbey Town Council on 01992 714949 or e-mail townclerk@ walthamabbeytc.gov.uk
STUDENTS MARK INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
Students at West Hatch High School were reminded of the need for all nations to join together in the cause of world peace by taking part in the International Day of Peace initially established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Organised by School Counsellor Sarah O’Donnell, all students viewed a Powerpoint presentation and took part in assemblies where key issues relating to the need for world peace were introduced - such as the suffering caused by war and conflict alongside the need for growing awareness and the generation of hope. Ms O’Donnell said: “Peace every day is the goal but focussing on a particular day is helpful for us all: peacefulness is important in our own lives, in our families, at work, in school and in our wider social lives.” On the day a ‘Tree of Peace’ adorned the school’s entrance hall, on which students tied messages related to the
desire for peace around the world. Some of the messages were prayers and sayings from different cultures and religions; others were statements of empathy for children like themselves distressed by the present Syrian conflict. Year 9 student Arjun Kuhaendran, a West Hatch High School Charity Ambassador, helped to organise the event and was instrumental in the cookie sale that took place at break time. He and his team - which included Nathan Grannel, Tilly Mae Kent, Charlotte Kent, Jaques Van Praagh, Kirsten Sewell-Humphreys and Charlotte Stevens - also sold tickets for the lunchtime Dance of Peace, a workshop led by Year 11 Dance students where anyone who paid 50p could join in the fun. The day raised £143.97 to be donated to the charity War Child.

ONGAR TOWN COUNCIL LITTER POSTER COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED
A poster highlighting recycling and the penalties for dropping litter has won an Ongar Town Council competition. being collected. The council decided to run the poster competition to try to encourage people to dispose of their litter properly. Council chairman councillor Jim Browning said: “The council was very impressed with the quality of the entries. Callum’s poster is lively and colourful and will hopefully catch people’s attention and make them think twice about how they dispose of their rubbish. We want to show the community that dropping rubbish is not acceptable. If everyone put their rubbish in a bin then think what a difference this would make to the local environment.”
LOCAL NEWS STACEY IS SET TO SHARE HER SLIMMING SECRETS
A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 5 stone is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Stacey Moran joined her local Slimming World group in Epping 18 months ago, now she has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Members at the group are getting ready to welcome Stacey as their new Consultant when she takes over the group on 20th October. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 5st and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target.
Stacey Moran
“Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and

GLORIOUS SLEEP
e honest with yourself, how much sleep do you get each night? The likelihood is that you’re one of the third of Britons who sleep for less than six hours a night. If you’re not meeting the recommended 6 - 9 hours you may not be aware that your sleeping habits are putting you at an increased risk of developing health problems including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Adults aged 40-60 are the worst culprits for sleep deprivation. Research shows this is due to difficulties in juggling that work-life balance, often whilst caring for older relatives as well as striving to meet goals at the peak of their careers. Heart Research UK have some sleep suggestions which could help you get more shut eye:
THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE
A cool environment is key to helping you get a restful and undisturbed sleep with 18.5°C (65°F) being the optimal temperature. Remember to change your duvet as the seasons change to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’s important that your hands and
Are you getting enough?
feet are warm to help you regulate your body temperature so in winter wear socks to bed to keep your toes toasty.
SCREEN-FREE SLEEP ZONE
Melatonin is a hormone known to help restful sleep, with levels in the blood rising greatly at night. Natural daylight and the artificial light produced from some device screens reduces the production of melatonin, potentially disturbing sleep. Using electronic devices before bed stimulates the brain and can prevent you from falling into that peaceful and relaxed sleepy state. Make your bedroom a screenfree zone by removing televisions, laptops and tablets from your bedtime routine. Try reading a book instead, a much more relaxing way to drift off into a restful slumber.
ROUTINE EXERCISE
Make regular exercise a part of your routine during the day or early evening. Exercise releases feel good hormones, endorphins, so you’ll feel fantastic. As well as feeling great, you’ll use up some extra energy to help you fall sound asleep. Try not to exercise too close to going to bed as this can make it difficult to un-wind.
WIND DOWN TIME Get into good habits with a calming evening routine. Clear your
head before bed with a relaxing bath, aromatherapy, soothing music, stretches and positive thoughts. Alcohol before bed may seem like a good way to get you off to sleep but it’s certainly not the answer; alcohol disturbs sleep quality and causes that next day ‘fuzzy head’, stopping you from being on top of your game.
BE CONSISTENT
Consistency is key so develop a healthy sleep routine and stick to it to ensure you get as much sleep as possible each night. Catch up sleep at the weekend isn’t enough to cancel out sleep deprivation throughout the week. A ‘power nap’ can be helpful but shouldn’t be detrimental to your normal evening sleep patterns so limit napping to no more than 30 minutes. With busy lives it can be tempting to sacrifice sleep to manage conflicting priorities. Don’t take your sleep for granted, just a few extra hours could help you to perform better and help protect you from future health problems too. Hop into bed, snuggle down and dream-on till the break of dawn for a brighter, happier and healthier start to your day. BE FREE FROM BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA AT LAST
SUFFERING WITH BACK PAIN? TRIED MANUAL TREATMENTS? IDD THERAPY IS FOR YOU. IDD Therapy is the targeted disc treatment for sufferers of back pain, neck pain and related symptoms such as sciatica. In clinics nationwide, this non-invasive option helps to bridge the gap between ‘hands-on’ treatments and surgery. What is IDD Therapy? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a non-invasive, targeted disc treatment for unresolved back pain, neck pain and associated symptoms such as arm pain and leg pain (sciatica). Available through a network of spinal disc specialists across the UK, IDD Therapy delivers a precise and more consistent treatment than is possible with the hands alone or with traditional mechanical methods like traction.
What does the programme involve? You will be fully assessed before undergoing treatment; this includes a review of a recent MRI or suitable scan.
How does IDD Therapy work? IDD Therapy uses gentle pulling forces to distract (draw apart) specific spinal segments where discs are damaged or bulging, removing pressure and irritation from targeted discs and any trapped nerves. Patients have a structured programme of regular IDD Therapy sessions which allows their body to adapt to treatment whilst progressively relieving pain and improving movement.
Treatment is gentle and safe. Sessions begin with some Thermedic heat therapy on the area to be treated, warming up the muscles and ligaments. You will remain fully clothed throughout treatment and be fitted with a soft, ergonomic harness for comfort and support. The machine tilts upright, allowing you to step on from the standing position without pain or difficulty. Once you are comfortably harnessed, computer-controlled pulling forces are gently applied at

In the past, slipped disc patients often had to consider invasive options if manual treatments couldn’t get them better. Now with IDD Therapy, these patients have a very good chance of becoming pain-free
You will feel totally relaxed during the 25 minute session on the SPINA machine. Afterwards, some cold therapy is applied to minimise any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. Gentle exercise and activity are gradually introduced as treatment progresses - essential for long-term pain relief. Who can benefit from IDD Therapy? Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have had back pain, neck pain or sciatica for some time and have not responded to manual therapy and exercise. Reasons to choose IDD Therapy • Your current treatment is not working • You want to stop taking painkillers • You are seeking long-term pain relief • You want to return to normal activities If you have unresolved back pain or neck pain and need help, call Atkins Physiotherapy Consultants on 020 8504 0478 or visit: www.AtkinsPhysio.com

CHRONIC
BACK PAI N ASK THE EXPERT
H E A LT H FITNESS
&
Is your life blighted by back pain? Are you seized by the agony of sciatica? Stuck on the merry-go-round of painkillers and GP visits? Spinal expert, Neil Velleman answers some commonly asked questions.
WHAT IS CHRONIC BACK PAIN?
‘Chronic’ means pain which has persisted for more than 12 weeks. Some sufferers may have had pain for several months or even years. Long-term back pain can have various causes but for many sufferers, it is due to a disc condition.
WHAT IS A HERNIATED OR ‘SLIPPED’ DISC?
Discs are the protective pads of connective tissue dividing the bones of the spine - the ‘shock absorbers’ which protect the spine. Being on our feet all day, sitting at workstations or lifting heavy objects, can weaken the spine, eventually causing a disc to bulge or even rupture. When damage like this occurs we might say the disc has ’slipped’, herniated or prolapsed.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’VE ‘SLIPPED’ A DISC?
Typically, you will suffer with episodes of pain which will become more frequent over time. You may experience additional symptoms such as nerve pain in the arms or legs (sciatica), neck pain or headaches.
WHAT IS SCIATICA?
When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated by a protruding disc, it can result in a grinding or shooting pain travelling from the buttock down the length of the leg. Sometimes the pain is accompanied by tingling, numbness or weakness in the legs and feet.
HOW DO I GET HELP?
You should talk to a back pain specialist with experience in disc-related problems. Chronic back pain and sciatica usually require a combination of antiinflammatory medicine and physical therapy - including the non-invasive, targeted disc treatment, IDD Therapy.
HOW CAN IDD THERAPY HELP?
IDD Therapy relieves back pain and sciatica without the need for surgery.
IDD Therapy uses safe and gentle pulling forces to draw apart specific spinal segments where discs are damaged, removing pressure and irritation from any trapped nerves. Patients receive a structured programme of regular IDD Therapy sessions, progressively relieving pain and improving mobility.
ABOUT THE EXPERT
As well as working with patients in the Woodford community, Neil Velleman lectures to medical students, GPs and colleagues. He specialises in spinal disc conditions and associated nerve pain. His practice is an approved IDD Neil Velleman Therapy Disc Clinic.
MARGARET’S IDD THERAPY EXPERIENCE
Retired nurse Margaret Vernalls suffered for 4 years with back pain and sciatica: “As a result of two disc bulges, I suffered a grinding sciatic pain in my leg when I’d been walking or sitting for too long. I couldn’t do my normal daily activities simple things like dressing myself and standing at the sink to wash the dishes. After IDD Therapy I’m virtually pain-free and enjoying walking with my friends again. I’ve finally got my life back.” Call Atkins Physiotherapy Consultants on 020 8504 0478 or go to: www.AtkinsPhysio.com. Located at: 154 High Road, Woodford Green IG8 9EF

FASHION BEAUTY
HOW TO GET
PERFECT BROWS? Semi-permanent makeup of course!
S
emi-permanent makeup can be the solution to so many of our beauty worries, from filling out an ageing lip line to restoring over plucked eyebrows. As a means of enhancing a youthful appearance semi-permanent makeup is often a great alternative to fillers and Botox and is used for a wide range of treatments such as lip enhancement, eyebrow correction and perfectly placed eyeliner. Well filled out eyebrows and a perfectly drawn eye-liner can take years off of the face and semi-permanent makeup doesn’t carry the risks associated with invasive cosmetic surgery. If nothing else, semi-permanent makeup is a great time saving device - you’ll never need to worry about popping to the toilet to reapply your lipstick or eyeliner because you know you’ll always have perfectly placed makeup. Catherine has been tattooing now for a little over two years. She qualified in London with the Finishing Touches Training Group who are the leaders in the makeup tattooing world. Catherine initially advises a free consultation with herself, where you can discuss your requirements. Your eyebrows may need reshaping, defining, filling in, lifting, thickening or simply just enhancing. Using precise techniques Catherine can create or improve the shape and balance of your eyebrows; enhance the shape and definition of the eyes and repair years of over plucking. You will benefit from having a bespoke shape that suits you perfectly and that frames your eyes beautifully! The procedure will commence with the creation of a

template drawn onto the skin with a cosmetic pencil. This bespoke service makes the whole procedure a lot less scary as you can see the shape and style drawn on before the tattooing procedure actually begins. Catherine works with the hairs you already have and only plucks random hairs around the shape, many people fear that their brows have to be taken off but this is not the case. Anaesthetic is used before, during and after to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Many people’s main concern is, ‘is it painful?’, Catherine’s response is, “Many people worry about the pain factor, I would say it’s more scratchy than painful as it is only scratching the top dermal layer of the skin unlike body tattoos which go much deeper, one lady I tattooed felt the eyebrow plucking part around her brows was more sore and I have had a few clients actually fall asleep whilst having their brows tattooed.” The initial procedure usually takes two hours. Once the first stage is complete the client is given full aftercare instructions as well as aftercare cream. A follow up procedure is then completed after four weeks which is included in the introductory offer price of £150. PESTS AND DISEASE
Leatherjackets are often more numerous after a wet autumn, as damp conditions favour survival of eggs and young larvae. They will cause lawns to develop patches where the grass turns yellowish brown and often dies. Soak affected areas with water and cover over night with a piece of black polythene. The following day large numbers of grubs should be found on the surface under the cover ready for you to remove and destroy.

H 2 tsp. ground cinnamon H 1½ tsp. ground cloves H 1 tsp. ground mixed spice H 1 tsp. ground nutmeg H ¼ tsp. salt H 410g (14¼oz) granulated sugar H 250ml (8fl.oz) vegetable oil H 4 eggs H 1 x 425g (15oz) tin pumpkin purée
SPICED PUMPKIN BUNDT CAKE
For the cream cheese frosting: H 75g (3oz) butter H 225g (8oz) cream cheese H 175g (6oz) icing sugar, sifted H 3-4 tbsp. milk, plus more if needed
INGREDIENTS (makes 12)
For the cake: H 475g (1lb 1oz) plain flour H 2 tsp. baking powder H 1 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
To decorate: H Small flowers and autumn berries
FOOD & DRINK RECIPES
METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/350°F/gas mark 4 and lightly grease a bundt or ring cake tin with butter or a flavourless oil spray. 2. Sift the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon, cloves, mixed spice, nutmeg and salt into a large bowl and mix together. 3. Beat the sugar and vegetable oil in the bowl of a free standing electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or you can use a handheld electric whisk and mixing bowl) on a medium speed for 1-2 minutes or until the sugar is incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and paddle with a spatula. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Reduce the speed and add the pumpkin and beat until combined. 4. On a low speed, add the flour mixture in two additions and beat on a higher speed for 1–2 minutes until fully incorporated. 5. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1 hour until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave for 5 minutes before turning out of the tin onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 6. For the cream cheese frosting, beat the butter in the bowl of a freestanding electric mixer (or you can use a handheld electric whisk and mixing bowl) until soft and creamy, then beat in the cream cheese, icing sugar and milk until you reach a pouring consistency. 7. When the cake has cooled completely, place on a cake stand. Put the icing in a jug and pour over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. 8. Decorate with fresh autumn flowers and berries. Amy’s Baking Year is available to buy online and in bookshops & supermarkets nationwide.

CANCER APPEAL

In memory of Georgia Cordery
eorgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal (GTCA) is an Essex based charity set up by and in memory of Georgia Cordery, a Brentwood girl who sadly passed away due to a rare cancer in May 2010. Georgia was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008 on the weekend of her 13th birthday. She and her parents Peter and Sue Cordery and friends set up Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal in January 2009. Georgia played a huge part in raising funds for her charity before her sad passing just over a year later. GTCA has helped to improve the lives of families with children with cancer and life threatening conditions.

It helps with travel expenses, kitchen appliances, laptops, family breaks, pushchairs, sensory equipment etc. - anything that will help their day to day lives - whatever helps to relieve some of the stress and pressures that
accompany caring for a sick child. The charity has also provided funding for a member of Clic Sargent’s social care team to cover the South Essex area for the last 4 years and has just committed to continue this support for an additional year from May 2017. Clic Sargent is a national organisation offering cancer support to the young. GTCA hold various events throughout the year to raise funds, as well as having individuals support them by performing various challenges such as running the London Marathon and getting sponsorship through their online fundraising pages. There is an annual Netball Tournament held at Brentwood School, where Georgia was a pupil and talented sportswoman and netballer. GTCA are heavily involved in Brentwood’s Half Marathon and Fun Run in March and annually enter a team of around 100 runners in the event. The charity also helps raise funds by providing food and refreshments for all the runners. The Fun Run this year was won in an amazing time by Elliot Cordery in 15 mins 13 secs (probably a record!). Elliot is Georgia’s brother which makes winning the race even more momentous. This is the fourth time of entering the race and running in memory of his brave sister. Since its inception, the charity has raised over £470,000 and 2016 is
hugely important for the charity who are hoping to make the total over half a million pounds by the end of the year, with lots of events as well as the flagship event of the Charity Butterfly Ball at Orsett Hall in November. The local charity was over the moon to be chosen as Brentwood
Brentwood Fun Run
Sainsbury’s Charity of the Year from June 2016. They were voted by both staff and customers and it will raise money for this great cause up till June 2017. GTCA have also been chosen by Brentwood’s Mayor, Noelle Hones, as her Charity of the Year and she will be organising her events to support the charity too. Hopefully these two major achievements will help the charity to quickly reach the half million mark by the end of 2016! e moved house this month, up to the countryside and hoped George would not miss his old comforts too much, such as the house and his nursery. Thankfully it’s gone very well, although he does call his new nursery by his old ones name, much to their confusion.
“His monster chasing technique may need to be slightly refined.” We picked him up recently and asked how his day had been, “Me being a monster” he said. “Oh really, and what did you do?” I asked. “Me was chasing the girls” he replied. “Oh right, and did they like that?” “No, they did not”. So, his monster chasing technique may need to be slightly refined if he’s to start being friends with the girls, and perhaps he could also tweak his new love of ‘sharing’. It began innocently enough, I was eating some strawberries and he asked if he could have some, I replied saying I would “share some with you” and handed him a couple, after finishing them he proceeded to take more and tell me he “was sharing”. This has now been happening for a few days, where he decided to effectively steal my food, then protest his innocence that he was actually sharing. I can see a situation in 20 years where is defence to the judge is roughly along the lines of “but Your Honour,

the bank had lots of money in its vault, and I thought it needed sharing”. Hopefully it doesn’t quite come to that and he quickly learns the difference between sharing and theft! Jake on the other hand was no such worry with regards to the move, he’s blissfully happy in any surrounding, so long as there’s food. The main problem we have with him currently is that we now have a large conker tree in the garden, and he seems to assume these will taste superb. George has discovered that his joy of stamping is now useful when it comes to breaking the conkers from their casing, although he has also discovered that doing this in flimsy slippers enables the spikes to puncture the base of your feet. It rare to see a child tread on a conker then jump up so high you have to pluck them down from a tree, but I guess he won’t do that again. Conkers are mildly poisonous and this information isn’t sinking in with Jake, who just waddles over to piles of them and attempts to down them like muffins as we fling ourselves in the way to stop them entering his mouth. The real problem here is that he has got so fast these last few weeks and doesn’t like being held. It’s like trying to cuddle an eel when you pick him up, a crying, screaming eel. Yet when you put him down he starts smiling again and runs off towards whatever place seems to have the most danger, even if a scenario looks tranquil he seems to have developed a set of skills that can find danger. I put him on the rug in front of the TV, watching something innocent. I
go into the hall and come back with his beaker, to see him standing by the fireplace about to pull the guard off with his left hand, whilst holding a cocktail stick close to his face with his right hand. I have no idea where the stick came from, and the guard had been pushed back so far that an orang-utan would have struggled to reach it, but like I say, he’s developed these skills. We decided to paint George’s room when we moved in, as he loves green. So we headed out for some paint and picked what looked like quite a peaceful summer meadow style of green. Back home and on the walls it’s the most intensely powerful looking green you’ve ever had the misfortune to lay your eyes upon. If you can imagine how green the hulk would be if he ate nothing but spinach, kale and broccoli for a year, then rubbed himself in grass for a few weeks and finally covered himself in lime peel then you be coming potentially close to the vibrancy that George’s wall now possesses. We’ve left it so far as just the one

wall (the brush melted from the intensity of the paint) and you only see it as you’re walking back out of the room. So we showed George his new room and he absolutely loved it, “It’s green” he said, “Me love green!” ...TO BE CONTINUED
