124° Mirror

Zebra TEXTILE PATTERN Discovered by Aino Aalto, integrated in 1930s

124° Mirror Design Daniel Rybakken, 2017

The classic Zebra fabric was originally discovered by Aino Aalto during her European travels, incorporated in Artek interiors as early as the 1930s. Characterised by a soft, sensual feel and striking visual depth, the Zebra fabric will bring a touch of the wild

to any interior. Today the Zebra fabric is woven exclusively for Artek. It is also available on all upholstered Artek products and by the meter. The Zebra fabric is made of 58% wool, 36% cotton and 6% polyester.

The mirrors are both functional objects and also a playful contemplation on reflection, light, and image by designer Daniel Rybakken. The 124° mirrors can be fixed to any vertical surface or stand freely on a horizontal surface. Simply and elegantly engineered, the 124° mirrors are available in three different sizes, including one version

with an integrated wooden shelf. Each mirror in the collection has two faces set 124 degrees apart. As a result, the mirrors reflect unexpected views of their surroundings, with each side revealing a different perspective. To look squarely into the mirror is to see no reflection at all.

RIIHITIE PLANT POT

A330s “Golden Bell” Savoy

RIIHITIE PLANT POT Design Aino Aalto, ca. 1937

A330s “Golden Bell” Savoy Design Alvar Aalto, 1937

Created by Aino Aalto and used on the terrace of their own house, which Aino and Alvar Aalto built on Helsinki’s Riihitie Road, the plant pots embody the Aaltos’ belief that the small details are equally worthy of our time and attention. Although the plant pots featured in the Artek presentation at the Paris World Fair in 1937, they never went into serial production. In 2017 and on the occasion of Finland’s 100th anniversary, Artek introduces the

plant pots in both the original shapes. The ceramic pots are handcrafted, the choice of material inspired by the tiles Aalto incorporated into many of his buildings. Reinterpreted in three sizes for indoor use, the plant pots are available in white or blue, both colours inspired by the ceramic tiles on display at The Experimental House, Aalto’s summer retreat on the Finnish island of Muuratsalo.

A version of the elegant pendant light designed by the Aaltos for The Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki, Pendant Light A330S has a sculptural quality that can be appreciated whether switched on or off. Made from a single piece of brass, with an uncoated exterior surface, it will age gracefully over time.

Natural oxidation starts right after production, beginning an aging process that will result in a beautiful patina. The Savoy version casts a golden, warm-toned light while neutralising glare. With a black textile cord similar to the ones found at The Savoy to this day, this version closely resembles the very first pieces created in the 1930s.
