With its outstretched arms like a friend ready to greet you with a warm, welcoming hug, the Catch Lounge Chair builds on Hayon’s penchant for humour and personification. At the same time, it introduces a higher back and elongated seat in a singular shell supported by a metal armature. The result is a leisure chair that’s angled back just a bit – so you can sit down, relax and, as the name implies - lounge. “The more we work with Hayon, the more we appreciate his ability to bring humanity and warmth to all his concepts,” says &tradition Brand Director Martin Kornbek Hansen. “Historically, classic lounge chairs had a somewhat aloof aspect to them. However Hayon has managed to make the Catch Lounge Chair more personal and inclusive, setting the scene for a more intimate atmosphere and conversation. Which coincides with our Danish idea of cosy. Something we call hyggeligt.“ As Hayon sees it, “A lounge chair should be inviting to look at. In a way, it should be almost irresistible. Meaning you can’t help but sit back, get comfortable and have a chat. That’s what I wanted to achieve. With the added element of the two arms, like a friend, happy to welcome you.”

H I S TO R Y

Catch, Jaime Hayon’s first contribution to &tradition’s collection, is a chair that welcomes you with open arms. Its armrests extend from the shell like literal limbs, ready to embrace you as you sit down. In addition to being a witty personification, it is also an eye-catching piece of design. Serpentine lines give it a playful lightness that is counterbalanced by a sturdy, wellbalanced base and legs that ensure maximum comfort. The shell offers comfort alongside great variability. With multiple textile and leather upholstery options available from Kvadrat and CA-MO and a matt black frame, Catch can be adapted to almost any colour scheme. In the 1980s, Hayon was interested in skating and graffiti culture, which had an impact on the playful, detailed, colourful and humouristic elements in his design style.

JAIME HAYON Jaime Hayon is all about being open. A Spanish artist/designer who set up his own studio in 2000, Hayon is an eternal enthusiast whose modus operandi is optimism. He has designed countless pieces of furniture, lighting fixtures and home accessories, hotel interiors, retail shops, a line of ceramics, shoes and his own collection of timepieces. With designs already in prominent museums around the globe, Hayon is at the forefront of a new wave of talents blurring the lines between art, decoration and design. With offices in Italy, Spain and Japan, Hayon is a prolific designer keen on exploring new, expressive forms. Armed with a deep respect for artisan skills, finely-crafted details and a passion for play. Catch is a chair that welcomes you with open arms. Almost like limbs, the armrests extend outwards ready to embrace you as you sit down. The lightness of the curves are counterbalanced by a sturdy base in this eye-catching design with plenty of personality. “Hayon created this witty personification to be a comfortable chair able to accommodate various body types,” explains Martin Kornbek Hansen. “It’s his harmonious construction of curves in this inviting shape that won us over at &tradition. In a terrific chair destined to become an icon.”

With Fornell, Andreas Bozarth Fornell wanted to design a lamp that didn’t take energy away from a room. Inspired by American artist Donald Judd, a forerunner of the minimalist movement known for his work with industrial material to help foster the democratization of art. Drawing his inspiration from the world of art and fashion, Andreas Bozart Fornell creates simple, streamlined designs you would enjoy sharing a space with. Initially trained as a cabinetmaker, Fornell apprenticed with an architect when fate stepped in. He landed a juicy job as the in-house architect for the Swedish fashion brand Acne, designing the interiors for their riveting retail shops in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Melbourne. Where he merged different materials with inherent colour qualities to create amazing spaces imbued with atmosphere. “Art is my inspiration,” says Fornell. “With art comes freedom from functionality. At the same time, I’m attracted to functionality. Not design for the sake of design. But objects you can really use in a design you would enjoy looking at – and having in your life.” “Fornell played with aluminium to create a matt finish on the outside and a high polished, mirror effect on the inside,” explains &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen. “He also took a pure U shape with a narrow beam of light and created wings to disperse the light. Resulting in a basic concept made brilliant.”

The Tricolore vases are a fantastic fusion of colour, ingenuity and artisanry. Each set is comprised of two cylindrical glass vases of different heights, each in a different colour. pair them together and you have a third colour – hence the name. “I’m passionate about colour, real materials and working with artisans,” explains German designer Sebastian Herkner. “With the Tricolore Vases, I played with a spectrum of colours, gauging which third colour would appear when the two colours overlap. How the colours would interact with sunlight. And fine-tuning the density of the glass to get just the right nuance. There are three sets of two vases, each in a different colour, height and diameter. Just like I experimented with the choice of colours, people can play with colour, too. They can place any of the individual vases wherever they need a little colour in their life.” Craftsmanship played a key role in achieving a personal sense of perfection. As Herkner sees it, knowledge of artisan crafts is passed on from one generation to the next, but too often they are destined to disappear. “Each vase passed through many expert artisan hands in the process of creation. Using wooden moulds is very tricky for glass blowers. It’s a challenge to get the sharpness and the precise 90-degree edge on top. Then there’s the process of cutting, sanding and polishing. We used an old fashioned technique to hand blow each vase. The hand craftsmanship makes it more beautiful and more human.” “It’s all about the communication of colour,” says &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen. “From Herkner’s choice of colours, the third colour created by two vases together, the interplay of light and the glass itself… Colours have such a positive effect on our emotions and sense of wellbeing. At &tradition, we continue to bring colour into our portfolio of products – and the lives of the people who bring them into their homes.”

H I S TO R Y

The Working Title table lamp is the epitome of a table lamp. An elegant expression of a classic design archetype in hand-polished aluminium. Finessed with an added functionality – a dimmer button to let you set the mood or focus fully on the object of your attention. For designer Harri Koskinen, it was the ideal brief. Design the ultimate table lamps of table lamps. Something that would work at home and at the same time, feel at home at work. Given Koskinen’s natural proclivity for simple shapes driven by functionality, the challenge involved creating the most convenience with the least amount of extraneous elements. “I always try to achieve simplicity and universality,” says Koskinen. “Quality pieces made with honest materials that could fit into any setting, any culture.” With the Working Title Desk Lamp, Koskinen started with the idea of a small sculpture for a table. There were three basic components: a base, a stem and a shade. The question was how to create a harmonious composition with all the elements together as an entity? “To tie it all together I chose a monochromatic material solution: hand-polished aluminium. It makes the lamp more elegant. The smooth surface is pleasing to the eye and to the touch. The circular shape of the base is reflected in the shape of the shade, with a flexible, swivel stem connecting the two.” In an ever-changing urban lifestyle, how do you address the different types of lighting needed for different spaces? As Koskinen sees it, “The world is in transition. The spaces where we live and work are more fluid than fixed. I wanted a multi-functional lamp for any type of hybrid space. Also in terms of the lighting itself. I added a dimmer function to the design so people can use it to focus on work or to create a nice atmosphere by their bedside. The light source is LED, using the latest energy-efficient technology.”

“Our ambition was to design a pendant with a simple industrial feel, but which was still elegant and poetic.” The Copenhagen Pendant is an exercise in contrasts. Combining the classic and the modern, the maritime and the industrial, it is a new pendant developed by Space Copenhagen for &tradition. Following the success of their first collaboration, the Fly Lounge Series, &tradition have worked with Space Copenhagen again to produce a pendant range in matt lacquered metal, one of Space Copenhagen’s first lights to enter production. The Copenhagen Pendant evokes memories of maritime gas lamps silhouetted against a striking nordic sky. with this new addition to the series in matt opal, designers Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou from Space Copenhagen are enhancing the ambient light and the poetic aesthetic appeal. “We really love the softness of this satinised matt opal glass in combination with the darkened brass,” says Henriksen. “It enhances the sculptural qualities of the shade in such a beautiful and poetic manner. At the same, the semi-transparent shade allows for ambient light for practically any space or occasion.” For Rützou, a key factor for the lamp was their desire to create a soft, cosy atmosphere. “We live in a part of the world where we have long periods with very little light, so it’s in our bones to seek, create and appreciate warm light that glows.” Whether alone or clustered in a group with its siblings in black, white or lacquered pastels, the Copenhagen Pendant makes a modern statement that’s nothing less than stunning. “It’s a classic icon contemporised,” adds &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen. “It merges the maritime with the industrial in an elegant expression that’s utterly engaging.”

SPACE COPENHAGEN Space Copenhagen is a multi-disciplinary design studio founded in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou. Graduates from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, their scope of projects extends from furniture, design objects and art installa-tions to interiors. With a roster of clients like Georg Jensen, By Malene Birger, the Louisiana Museum of Modern art and five-star Hotel D’Angleterre. Not to mention Michelin star Restaurant NOMA, voted the Best Restaurant in the World. Together they strive to create an elegant, intimate atmosphere, drawing on a mix of materials and subdued tones. Using organic materials such as wood, stone, leather and brass, which age gracefully over time. The Fly Lounge Series is all about lounging. It lets you sit, lie down, rest and relax anyway you choose. Instead of imposing a certain posture, the loose cushions are there for you to freely arrange or rearrange. Select either of the two sofas or the pouf, and you’ll experience cosy with a capital C. Space Copenhagen’s brilliant balance of soft and sturdy, as well as their attention to the universal need for comfort makes this a modern series with a classic appeal – a key criteria at &tradition.

H I S TO R Y

With Sami Kallio’s “Between Gaps” series, the aim was to explore the relationship between positive and negative space, where forms exist in the shapes, as well as the gaps in between. Kallio’s In Between bar stool is no exception. Merging man and machine by combining classic wood craftsmanship with compression moulding, Kallio imbues the In Between Bar Stool with some Nordic soul. Seen in a simple, timeless design that’s kissing cousins to his In Between Chair and In Between Table, both made in conjunction with &tradition. “We love the mix of classic woodworking techniques and modern machinery,” notes &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen. “Intrinsic to our own concept is merging the past with the present. So this design, with its simplicity and beauty, is truly emblematic of our own angle on design.” For Kallio, “The bar stool uses woodturning and special veneer techniques in a way that makes the structure sturdy yet surprisingly light. So it blends into a space without taking up too much space. I wanted the bar stool to fit comfortably into any setting – just like the person sitting in it.”

SAMI K ALLIO Sami Kallio was born in Finland and raised in Sweden, where he honed his skills in traditional woodworking craftsmanship, such as compression moulding and woodturning. An award-winning designer with a studio based in Gothenburg, Kallio designs furniture and interiors translating classical shapes into contemporary expressions with an industrial aesthetic which resonate with a modern-minded audience. Man and machine both play a role in many of Kallio’s creations. Merging modern methods of industrial manufacturing with handcrafted techniques. The result is a refreshing balance between the past and the present. The In Between Chair and Table offer a wink to the past in a timeless design with a focus forward. The interplay between positive and negative space is central to the concept, where forms are created by the shape as well as gaps in between. “This series fuses tradition with revolution, one of the founding principles at &tradition,” notes Martin Kornbek Hansen. “The crafting techniques and use of wood are steeped in our Nordic heritage. An important aspect of our designs which we are keen to keep alive.”
