PENDANT LIGHTS

PENDANT LIGHTS

Lighting objects have always been an integral part of the Artek collection, which includes the iconic pendant lights designed by Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Jørn Utzon and Juha Leiviskä. The interplay of natural and artificial light is of central importance in the architecture of Alvar Aalto, and electric light has a crucial impact on daily life during the long winter months of the Nordic climate. To this end, Aalto designed special light fittings for many of his buildings, many of which are still an integral part of the Artek collection today. The way Alvar Aalto looked at lighting combined the humanist and cultural concerns that defined his architecture. The solutions that he developed aspired to a general sense of wellbeing by promoting the social and even therapeutic benefits of light. But Aalto was also concerned about the sculptural value; each light should be seen and must satisfy aesthetic demands.

Aalto employed a variety of methods to make the diffusion of artificial light as indirect and soft as possible. Materials such as polished brass or white-lacquered metal create an exceptional quality of light. Golden reflections and the warm, bright-toned inner surface of the lampshade approximate the effect of sunlight. In addition, perforated brass bands along the lower edge of the shade of many lighting designs serve to reduce glare. Above and beyond their function, Artek’s pendant lights designed by Aalto, Wirkkala, Utzon and Leiviskä are joined by their inherent sculptural presence, which can be appreciated whether the light fixtures are switched on or off.
