“We often describe Lake Strobel as the Everest of trout fishing. It takes a bit of doing to get there, sort of like getting to base camp at Everest. The next day we meet the lake, very much like a climber meets the mountain. The lake is home to some of the largest trout caught anywhere in the world but is subject to whatever Mother Nature wants to send. There can be wind, there can be rain. On the other hand, there are calm, beautiful days. Estancia Laguna Verde fishing guides work hard and put in long days in this lunar-like landscape so that you have a chance to catch the trout of a lifetime while staying at a supremely comfortable lodge with outstanding cuisine and amazing wines. Does it get any better? We don’t think so.” Cathy & Barry Beck
“Estancia Laguna Verde has become a home away from home. Everything about it feels just right and the people are like family.” Lou Hegedus, Fort Collins, Colorado (14-time visitor since our second season).
Fishing: Overview
In fishing, location is everything. Being located on the southern end of Jurassic Lake, our 45,000-acre estancia has exclusive access to miles of Jurassic Lake shoreline, including several secluded bays that offer protection from the wind. One of these bays, aptly named, “Monster Bay,” is renowned for both the enormous quantity and size of the fish caught there. Beyond the shoreline of Jurassic, we also have exclusive access to over six miles of the incredible Barrancoso River, over seven miles of Moro Creek, as well as a dozen small lakes and lagoons that join the creek. At Estancia Laguna Verde, you will be fishing new and varied water every day, not pounding the same stretch of shoreline day after day.
The stories you’ve heard are true. Even a “small” fish here is bigger than the largest rainbow most anglers have caught elsewhere. Jurassic Lake is incredibly rich in aquatic insects, and the trout here gorge themselves on scuds (freshwater shrimp) and reach impossible sizes. Ten-to-twenty-pound trout are caught regularly. And did we mention that many of these trout are caught while sight fishing? Read that again, it is true. With the possibility of fishing small intimate creeks, the beautiful freestone Barrancoso River, and the world-famous Jurassic Lake, our lodge is one of the world’s premier fly fishing adventures.
Unlike other operations in the Strobel area, Estancia Laguna Verde challenges visiting anglers to fish new beats every day of the week, combining varied locations and using different techniques targeting the best fishing with the most rewarding methods.
Estancia Laguna Verde offers the best and most diverse program in all of Strobel and Southern Patagonia, which translates into an amazing and unique fishing experience, with a growing rate of over 70% of repeat clients!
Strobel Lake
After several seasons of hard work, we can now take you along more than 25 km of the pristine waters of Strobel Lake. The scenery is breathtaking and the fishing is out of this world! Wind can become a factor, so protected locations are crucial. You will be able to access many bays and protected spots such as Monsters Bay, Camelot Bay, Finger Bay, Moro Bay, Tasmania Bay, Sea Bay, Puesto Bay, The Aquarium, and Dry Fly Bay, among the most famous spots. Fishing these sheltered waters ensures you enjoy outstanding sight fishing action even in the hardest of conditions.
Barrancoso River
To understand the advantages of fishing at Estancia Laguna Verde, it is essential to understand the geography of the area, and the Barrancoso River in particular, so as not to be deceived by misleading publicity by a few specific outfitters with a short-term mentality.
With a total length of about 50 km, it is important to note that only the last stretch holds consistently big fish, especially in the prime months. This last stretch of the last 10 km of this astonishing river is the one that goes through Estancia Laguna Verde (both banks!), with our property ending a short distance from the last 3 / 4 pools of the river before it drains into Strobel Lake. Without a doubt, one of the highlight programs at our Estancia is Barrancoso River which is the one and only tributary of Strobel Lake.
As mentioned before, this beautiful freestone river runs for more than 10 km through our Estancia in the single best part of it! There are no other parts of the river like this one, and there are no other trophy waters like ELV waters.
Only a handful of anglers staying at Estancia Laguna Verde, get the chance to fish the best pools and runs of this one-of-a-kind river, which many experts consider to be the very best wild rainbow trout trophy water in the world!
Estancia Laguna Verde fishes this dream-like river with its crystal clear waters and amazing runs of huge trout in 3 different sections -upper, middle, and lower. With the addition of 2 hanging bridges over the river, our guests can access even the most remote pools offering outstanding angling and incredible vistas.
“Barrancoso River is, without a doubt, the best trophy rainbow world. And by far, the best part of this river runs through Estancia property… which means that ELV lodge offers the best trophy river fishing in the world.” Marcelo Morales, an angling legend after one of his annual hosted trips. He has been doing it
rainbow trout river in the Estancia Laguna Verde trophy rainbow trout legend of Argentina, since 2010.
Smaller Lakes And Lagoons
By northern and central Patagonia standards, many of the so-called “lagoons” at Estancia Laguna Verde would fall under the category of lakes, which is actually what they are!
Fed by Moro Creek, this amazing system of chained small lakes in Estancia Laguna Verde is an aspect many times overlooked in the quest of catching some of the largest rainbow trout in the world! Nothing to blame or argue about it, though. But we feel obliged to mention that these lakes can offer some of the most exciting stillwater fishing for resident brown trout, brook, and rainbow trout in Argentina, which, combined with Moro Creek, make an awesome program, any day of the week.

Cuisine
At Estancia Laguna Verde, we strive to make our cuisine as quality as the fishing—and that’s saying something. After a good night’s rest, guests will enjoy a hearty, chef-prepared breakfast to nourish them for a day of fishing. After breakfast, anglers split into pairs and head to the water. Following a morning of incredible fishing, guests can return to the lodge for a plentiful lunch and a siesta or take their lunch on the water. Guests who eat in the field can enjoy the strategically located “sun lounges” built around the property. After returning from an amazing day of fishing, guests can freshen up before dinner and enjoy a cocktail from our fully stocked bar.
We take food seriously and our operation strives to deliver the best cuisine of any lodge experience you will find. Adjacent to the lodge, our wine and cheese cave houses thousands of bottles of wine personally selected by the lodge owners as well as a large assortment of local Patagonian and Argentine cheeses. Appetizers, cocktails, and Argentine wines are served as guests tell stories from the day. Seated in our beautiful dining room, guests can expect an ample 3-course dinner with dishes of steak, lamb, pork, chicken, house-made pasta, and fish. Each course is paired with a chef-selected wine to accompany the meal. A favorite of our guests, one night our chef and sous chef will prepare a traditional Argentine asado of
grilled meats. After the main course, dessert is served along with after-dinner drinks. With zero light pollution and constellations unique to the southern hemisphere, you can enjoy a cigar and cocktail under the Patagonian sky.
The Lodge is located 100 meters from Verde Lake, 15 minutes from Strobel Lake, 5 minutes from the Barrancoso River middle section, 20 minutes from the Barrancoso River lower and upper sections; 5 to 30 minutes from Moro Creek, and 10 to 30 minutes for lakes such as Potreros Chico and Potreros Grande, Horseshoe, depending on the section and area of the Estancia you are fishing.

Fishing tackle
At ELV, we value the idea and concept of sight fishing with floating lines. All our fishing programs are designed to try to obtain the best results, with the most rewarding style of fishing. With that in mind, about 95 % of the fishing throughout the season is done with floating lines. In certain spots and special conditions, our guides suggest sink tip lines or adding a sink tip poly leader, to work specific slots with fish cruising at sight deeper in the water column.
For a full description of the fishing tackle used at ELV, please request our pre-trip tackle suggestions.
