A. Overview

The interior design project takes place in the residential area of Jardines del Campestre in San Pedro Garza GarcĂa, that is the uptown city of Monterrey area. Rich in green mountains, modern architecture and a look of innovation. The mountain range that best describes this exceptional place are the Sierra Madre Occidental (Mexican Rockies). Its range extends from the south of RĂo Bravo to the Gulf of Mexico. San Pedro city and neighborhoods have been developed around beautiful mountains, such as Chipinque National Park, which is a natural reserve in Mexico. It is a also a city of tremendous improvement of architectural and interior design with the benefits of well protected natural reserves. The client is a family composed of a couple in his 40s, with a teenager son and two daughters, one girl that is 15 years old, and other that is 10 years old. They love to enjoy their home, with their friends and a big size family, and the kids also play in their bedroom with their friends. They were looking a modern look with natural materials and gray colors, but keeping the cozy feeling of a home. It was also important to have low maintenance materials, and spaces that adapt to their needs and life style. This context influenced the selection of local materials for this beautiful residence, as well as, the interior finishes, furniture, accessories, textures and color palettes, so the interiors become part of the exterior. The gray marble in the floor, volcanic stone on the walls, porcelain tiles that imitates wood grain in some ceiling and wall elements, are some of the materials that create the modern, minimalist and raw look of this design composition. And elements like proportion, natural light, functionality were key to accomplish the balance and client needs for this project.

B. Brief & Concept Stage

CONCEPT 1

CONCEPT 2

During the study of this Project, this concept was explored based on the use of raw natural elements, such as dry wood, concrete floor looking for the pores coming out and some other organic elements. So this brings the opportunity to live the space with elements taken directly from Mother Nature. In the sake of keeping sustainable, is proposed reclaimed wood, recycled materials, and concrete elements. The client was looking also for a mature style, so light colors, simple patterns, metallic finishes in accessories were part of this concept.

The materials and textures were proposed not only for sustainable, aesthetics and comfort purposes, but also functionality, taking in consideration the weather of the area. In the middle of the mountain, surrounded of local vegetation and trees, this area has peeks of high humidity during the year. It this concept was chosen bold and sober materials: Marble St. Tomas, Black Granite, Volcanic Stone, porcelain tile with wood grain and Marble Carrara. The environmental psychology needed for each room was achieved mixing and matching these textures with accent colors in some furniture and accessories, giving a modern look and timeless design composition

It is important not only to accomplish the aesthetics and functional needs of the client, but also the budget. It was a great challenge and extensive work of collaboration to fit the budget; it was all-possible contracting all local materials, FF&E, suppliers and contractors. This also helped with time constraints.

6

The budget for the interiors was $110,000.00 us dollars, and was spent as follows: - FLOOR FINISH: $23,000 dlls - CRYSTAL WALLS: $17,000 dlls - STONE WALLS: $5,000 dlls - WALL, CEILING ELEMENTS: $6,000 dlls - INSULATION: $3,000 dlls - ILLUMINATION: $5,000 dlls - LIGHTING FIXTURES: $6,000 dlls - DECORATION AND ARTS: $4,000 dlls - DÉCOR FURNITURE: $6,000 dlls - BUILT-IN FURNITURE: $38,000 dlls

There were many variables that came out from this research that were key to the client so he could decide the final concept that accomplished his requirements based on comfort, functionality, efficiency and aesthetics. These goals were possible following Concept 2 (mentioned in Section B1), using the golden ratio rule with the versatile materials of this concept. It could be achieved the right proportion and perfect balance of the interior elements, framed with natural light, different scenes of artificial light, matched with furniture, art work, beautiful accent colors and unique accessories. The analysis and research-based design that follows this project brings innovative custom made furniture, interior layout and efficiency of the spaces. So it was easy for the client to feel comfortable and confident with the design selections through the design process.

INNOVATION In this interior design, the innovation was conceived in many custom made furniture and other elements of the residence: • It was saved time in the process of manufacturing built-in furniture, making a detailed time line, crossing engineering with specialists for the process of stones, carpentry, smithy, and glass develop. It was also used non toxic substances that accelerate the process of drying and protecting the final finish. It will be explained in this section some of them, such as the Carrara marble dining table and its iron legs that supports up to 600kg; tempered cleared glass on the top to reduce maintenance and protect the stone. Cabinetry of dining room where four different specialists work in the space furniture: aluminum, stone, carpentry and glass. • In the bar, it was created a Movable stone isle. Thanks to the inner structure, it can be moved easily everywhere despite the 2.50m length and the weight of the structure and the black granite. • The volcanic stone pieces applied on the walls were used with the golden section to create other interior elements, so it feels an amazing balance in the space. • The black desk in the edge of the stairs supported in cantilever makes a heavy piece to be conceived as a light element. It is not only a sculptural piece, but also a desk if needed.

• The use of isolation around the house: floor, walls and ceiling, creates a comfortable environment despite the weather outside, and it protects the natural materials used inside such as the Saint Thomas Marble. Regulate the temperature in this city is valuable to give comfort to the space, reduce the energy cost and reduce maintenance work because reduces humidity and abrasion of natural materials. • The chandelier of the living room is composed of spheres of different size. Each piece is hanged finding balance and proportion among them from each room of the house, no matter if it is ground floor or second floor.

PROPORTION One of our major concepts are based in a thoughtful and strategic Proportion among several elements, such as the volcanic stone cut, the size of the walls, high of the ceilings, size of the built in furniture. All these creates a beautiful composition between the main entrance / stairs / living room / dining room creating a subtle but strong balance. The chandelier in the living room is a center piece that can be seen from all the spaces of the residence in both floors. It is appreciated a perfect proportion in all the views, where the material walls around the house work as the background of different scenes.

LIVING ROOM

Mirror reflection of art piece

The art piece is the focal point from different points of perspective of the residence

As it has been explained before, the double height living room connected to the dining room, the entry hall and family room on the second floor are of the most attractive spaces at this residence. Contrary to the modern, shiny and sleek materials used, you can feel a warm and cozy environment.

It is 4:1 of volcanic stone size 3

- The mirroring effect between the horizontal window on the volcanic stone wall and the black desk, located at the edge of the stairs, was designed to create a not very obvious symmetry with each other. - The distribution of chandelier sphere pendants. - It can be seen as the symmetric proportion between the spheres from all spaces. - Illumination design that creates balance and different scenarios.

It is essential to find balance between functionality and aesthetic, and this was not the exception. Interior elements, FF&E and design layout have been conceived to satisfy client needs, and they have been submitted to a metamorphosis to create elements that respond to aesthetics, proportion, comfort, low maintenance and even to accomplish a low budget.
