Environmental Stewardship Award Nomination Deadline Approaches There’s just three weeks left to get your nominations in for the 2018 Environmental Stewardship Awards. The deadline for nominations is March 18, 2018.

If you know someone or an organization that has been a great steward of our environment, there is still time to nominate them.

The Board of County Commissioners, and the County’s Environmental and Science Advisory Board [ESAB] are seeking nominations for 2018. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate.

The awards recognize individuals, organizations, public agencies, and businesses that have committed to engaging in activities that exemplify outstanding stewardship of the environment. These activities can be simple or complex, large or small. Projects can be one-time events, or ongoing activities. The nomination period closes March 18, 2018. You can nominate on-line at https://www.larimer.org/boards/environmental-and-science-advisoryboard/awards/nominate Projects can be self-nominated or nominated by others, and anyone is eligible to nominate a deserving individual, organization, business or public agency for an award. Estes Park Police Department Seeks Volunteer Auxiliary Members The Estes Park Police Department is seeking volunteers for its Police Auxiliary Unit. Auxiliary members perform uniformed, unarmed patrols and assist with special events and other activities ranging from fingerprinting and vacation checks to providing specialized assistance with investigations. Interested individuals should complete a Town of Estes Park employment application, available at www.estes.org/jobs or at the Police Department window at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Applications should be turned in by 5 p.m. April 6, 2018. The selected candidates will be required to attend a training class on the evening of April 27 and the morning of April 28, 2018.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, friendly and outgoing, and must enjoy working with people. Applicants should also be able to stand or walk for up to four hours, consent to a criminal and

driving background check, have no felony convictions, no more than two moving traffic violations within the past 12 months, and no warrants or misdemeanor convictions in the last five years. A successful interview with the Police Department will also be required. Auxiliary members come from many diverse backgrounds and life experiences; police or military experience is not required.

The Auxiliary Unit, formed in 2001, is a 20-member volunteer team whose purpose is to enhance the individual and collective safety of the community by assisting the Estes Park Police Department. A few of the special projects carried out by the Auxiliary team are the Citizen's Police Academy and the Blue Santa program. Members are required to donate a minimum of 96 hours per year and attend a variety of trainings.

On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

On February 21 at 5:40 p.m. police were called to a situation at S. St. Vrain and Country Club Lane. On arrival police arrested a 29 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with a violation of a protection order. She was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On February 23 at 12:21 a.m. police stopped a 23 year old male driver from Estes Park in the 200 block of Fourth Street and charged him with DUI, DUI per se and later released him on a summons.

On February 23 at 1:55 a.m. police

were called to a disturbance at 435 W. Elkhorn Ave. Upon arrival police cited a 29 year old female from Estes Park with criminal mischief. She was later released on a summons.

On February 25 at 1:47 a.m. police stopped a driver at 141 Rockwell St. The 24 year old male driver from Estes Park was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and he was charged with DUI, DUI per se and transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On February 26 at 10:41 a.m. police contacted a 27 year old female from Estes Park at 1040 Big Thompson Ave. who was wanted on a warrant for driving under restraint, unregistered vehicle and failure to appear in court. She was later released on a PR bond.

Estes Park School District And Gaggle Partner To Implement Safety Management For G Suite Estes Park School District R-3 and Gaggle today announced a partnership to enhance Estes Park School District student safety when they use G Suite for Education from Google. Estes Park School District will pilot usage of the Gaggle Safety Management for G Suite to further promote student and educator productivity in a safe and a controlled environment. The pilot project will continue through the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year and conclude in June.

Gaggle Safety Management combines technology with expert Student Safety Representatives, who review content 24/7 to assure students are safe. Gaggle identifies inappropriate words and images in Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs and more. Trained professionals then apply consistent, school- or district-approved policies for positive intervention, alerting school officials if there is an imminent concern with a student.

Dr. K. Kevin Aten, Director of Innovation, Instruction, and Technology re-

ported, “We are pleased to offer this pilot project as yet another avenue to keep our students safe and continue our work to teach digital citizenship.”

Aten further reported at the end of the pilot in June, the district would fully assess the effectiveness of the Gaggle partnership, and utilize the data gleaned from the safety management to determine any possible continuation of the content review services.

Gaggle has been providing safe online learning products and solutions to the K-12 market since 1999. The company’s focus remains on student safety so educators can have the confidence to allow learners to take advantage of current technology for communication, collaboration, and learning. Dave Shirk Seeking Town Board Seat My name is Dave Shirk and I ask for your vote for Town Board. After many years of being asked “when are you going to run for Town Board?” I decided now is a good time.

I believe I have the wisdom, temperament, and broad perspective to best serve the residents of Estes Park.

My wife Esla and I have been married for 24 years.

We have three wonderful daughters between 13 and 20 years. We have lived in Estes Park for 18 years and know the struggle with finding housing and work, raising kids, and caring for elderly and disabled family members.

I studied at the University Dave Shirk of Kansas and earned a bachelors degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Film Studies, and a Masters of Urban Planning majoring in Urban Design. I spent my teens and 20s in the restaurant industry and directed educational broadcasts while in graduate school.

I began my career as a city planner in Topeka KS. I then spent 15 years as the primary land use planner here in Estes

Park. I was project planner for many significant projects including YMCA of the Rockies redevelopment, Good Samaritan Village, and Harmony Foundation. I in this position I worked closely with all local government districts including the County Commission. This local experience will serve well on the Board.

Since leaving my position with the Town I have started a small consulting firm, dedicated myself as a family caregiver, and found a niche working with a local contractor.

Our community faces many issues, including chronic and worsening summer traffic congestion, long-term housing shortages, scarce childcare options, looming development code changes, and an existential struggle with population growth and changing times (VRBO, ride-share, warming/drying climate).

My objective is to serve on the board with an open mind, a wide perspective, and a non-political pragmatic approach to the Board. I ask for your vote this April. Thank you.

Genealogical Society Meeting March 8 The Estes Park Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the upstairs Wasson Room of the Estes Valley Library. At this month’s meeting, members and guests are encouraged to share information and experiences with DNA testing. Which tests have they taken? What companies did they use? How have the tests furthered their genealogical research? Please join the discussion of these and other questions on the fascinating topic of DNA testing and results.

The Society meets the second Thursday of every month from January through November in the library, offering a wide variety of programs and workshops.

Anyone interested in genealogy and family history research is welcome to attend the meetings.

Come To Town Trustee Candidate Forum March 8 The League of Women Voters of Estes Park is sponsoring a candidate forum for the April 3 Town Trustee election at Town Hall Thursday, March 8 from 7 – 9 p.m. All 10 candidates who are running for the three positions that will appear on the ballot are expected to attend. Each candidate will make an opening statement, after which we will ask as many questions of the candidates as time allows. Audience members who attend the event are encouraged to submit questions in writing on cards that the League will provide that evening. The event will be live-streamed for those who are unable to attend in person, but we will be unable to accept questions from those watching from home. We will also record the event, so you can watch it on a later date using a DVD which will be available at the library or on-line.

Estes Park EDC Meeting To Discuss Fast, Affordable Broadband For The Estes Valley The Estes Park Economic Development Corporation (Estes Park EDC) invites you to attend a public meeting on Monday, March 5, 2018, to learn about the future of nationally competitive, fast, affordable, reliable broadband services in Estes Park. The meeting will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Board Room, 170 MacGregor Avenue.

“Estes Park EDC supports the Town of Estes Park implementing a build-to-demand, phased approach for building a fiber optic network that can support robust broadband services, as well as enhanced communication services and allow the Town to implement electric power smart grid technologies” said Jon Nicholas, President/CEO of Estes Park EDC. The Town of Estes Park has researched and investigated the opportunities and challenges of offering broadband services in the existing Light & Power service area.

The Town received a grant of nearly $1.4 million from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to fund the engineering work for a detailed plan to build a fiber optic broadband communications network in the Town’s Light & Power service area. The engineering work developed a shovel-ready engineering plan and cost estimate to provide one gigabit broadband service capacity for the Estes Park Light and Power service area, which includes the Estes Valley and extends from Glen Haven to Allenspark.

Three speakers will present at the meeting. David Batey is the Chair of the Estes Park EDC Competitive Broadband Committee, and organized the effort that led to a 92 percent local vote in favor of restoring the Town’s right to directly or indirectly provide all telecommunications services including broadband within the Light and Power service area. He will provide a brief summary of the history of the Estes Valley broadband initiative.

Mike Abbiatti is also a member of the Broadband Committee, and will discuss the importance of high-speed broadband to the community and its residents. Abbiatti is the Executive Director of WCET (the WICHE

Cooperative for Educational Technologies) and Vice President for Educational Technologies of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) which includes 16 Western States. Abbiatti assumed the WCET leadership position in January 2015. Among other honors, Abbiatti has been recognized by the Computerworld-Smithsonian Awards Program as a Laureate signifying leadership in the design, deployment, and utilization of Information Technology for the benefit of Louisiana's citizens.

Neil Shaw is a principal with Uptown Services, the firm hired by the Town of Estes Park to assist in business planning for broadband. Shaw will discuss potential business models for providing improved broadband services, and present an overview of the financial pro formas prepared for the Town. Shaw has 27 years of experience in advanced technology development and implementation. He has an extensive understanding of various broadband network infrastructure alternatives and the financial dynamics that are critical to making decisions in this industry. Shaw is a founder of Uptown Services and was responsible for forming the municipal broadband practice area in 1998. Shaw has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University and an MBA from the University of Colorado.

Leonard Bernstein would have turned 100 this year. That’s Leonard Bern-STINE, not -STEEN, and is of no relation to the Beren-STAIN Bears—in case those names confuse you.

The legendary Bernstein (1918-1990) was a composer, a conductor, a pianist, and an educator. The most popular Broadway musical he composed was West Side Story and he was nominated for an Oscar for his musical score for the movie On The Waterfront (he had never written a movie score before). Bernstein also composed the satirical, hypocritical Mass for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, which included a full orchestra, a rock band and a marching band. He knew no boundaries when he created music.

In the classical music world, this entire year is devoted to celebrating Leonard Bernstein. More than usual, classical radio stations are focusing on his works, choruses are performing his pieces and orchestras are playing his compositions. I am fortunate that I have been able to attend several symphony programs honoring his works and we’re not even a third of the way through the year; there’s a lot more Bernstein to look forward to in 2018.

Not everyone enjoys listening to classical music and that’s as it should be. To each her own. Not everybody likes rap either, even though there is some brilliant rap music out there (so I am told). Personally, I find most classical music pleasing, especially when I can hear it performed live.

I can become entranced by the music during a performance, with the strings singing like angels, the sound of the harp floating cloud-like above, French horns sending out their mellow call, and the bass section providing a discreet foundation.

Yet sometimes my mind wanders, and since I sit closest to the percussion section, I am as entertained by watching the antics of those particular musicians and their drums, bells, cymbals, and triangles, as listening to the complete orchestra.

There are many more percussion instruments than there are percussionists so this is how it goes: one musician beats the bass drum, then scurries to the xylophone where he selects two mallets—and sometimes four (two in each hand) and plays a few notes, then gets himself back over near the bass drum so he can clang the cymbals. A fellow drummer is clinking the triangle here, drilling on the snare there, then striking the gong to issue forth one reverberating tone everywhere.

One piece the Kansas City Symphony played recently, LA Variations, composed not by Leonard Bernstein but by EsaPekka Salonen, called for bass drum, vibraphone, tuned gongs, log drums, bongos, marimba, tubular bells, crotales, tom-toms, tam-tams, congas, glockenspiel, roto-toms, mark tree, celesta and synthesizer. You should have seen the percussion section in action! It was like watching ants right after you’ve stepped on their hill.

(The celesta and synthesizer fall under the category of percussion because their keys

have to be struck to create a sound. We don’t blow into a percussion instrument or pluck, strum or draw a bow across strings. Percussion instruments must be hit—be it softly or with force.)

You know that word-game where you have a list of items on the left that you have to match up to a different list of associated words—not in the same order—on the right? That’s the game I played that Sunday after hearing the thrilling LA Variations: I tried to figure out which clanging, banging, clinking, booming instrument on stage went with which instrument named in the program. That’s when I figured out tam-tams are gongs. Who knew!

Obviously, the percussion section has to work as a team. Yet there is one guy who doesn’t have to do all that bustling around.

The privileged timpani player just sits there, surrounded by his big drums, putting his ear right down next to them and tapping oh so lightly on the head so he can hear if the drums are in tune, and then waiting for his six seconds of ever-so-important left-right-left-right pounding. I wonder what makes him so special that he doesn’t have to do his fair share to make sure all the tinkling, chiming and rat-atat-tatting happens when it’s supposed to.

His only concern is his kettledrums. What if the triangle player took the same attitude?

What does percussion music look like anyway? Some of the instruments play actual notes, like the vibraphone, but most of them just make a thrum, rhythm, a series of sounds, or noise, if you please. How does a composer indicate a desired sound?

A mark tree is a bar with several metal tubes of various lengths hanging from it. It is played by sweeping a stick down the length of the hanging chimes, producing a ringing, melodic cascade. What does that look like on a printed page? Snare drums can produce rapid-fire patter so fast the drumsticks don’t look like they’re moving.

How is that indicated on a snare drum score?

It would be easy enough to find the answers to my questions on the Internet.

(The computer is a percussion instrument itself, with the tapping of fingers on the keyboard creating a pleasant pitter-patter similar to rain on the window.) But I’m not going to look there. I’m going to wait until I can ask a percussionist in person. I want to see a percussion score, hold it in my hands, and maybe tap a little on a drum.

How fortunate we are that we have composers like Esa-Pekka Salonen and Leonard Bernstein who enrich our lives with their music. They know how to write it. All we have to do is appreciate it.

Platte River Seeks More Solar Power RFP calls for 20 megawatts and energy storage Platte River Power Authority Wednesday issued a request for proposals (RFP) for at least 20 megawatts of new solar energy capacity that could be added to its system, which serves Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland. The RFP also called for up to five megawatthours of energy storage capacity.

“Our municipal owners and their customers want additional carbon-free energy resources when it makes sense,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River. “We believe we can provide customers with more solar power at very reasonable costs while maintaining our strong standards for reliability.”

In its RFP, Platte River said it would consider proposals for a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for solar projects that could be built and operational between June 2019 and the end of 2021. The request stipulated any qualifying project would need to connect to Platte River’s transmission system, such as at its Rawhide Energy station substation. Platte River also expressed strong interest for technologies that could store up to five megawatt-hours of energy.

The energy produced from the solar installation would be used as part of a community solar program in which the power would be made available to Platte River’s owner communities to be offered to customers.

“Prices for battery technology are coming down and we are very interested in benefiting not only from cost savings but also the operational experience that we

could use on a larger scale down the road,” said Frisbie.

Approximately 30 percent of the energy that Platte River currently delivers to its owner communities comes from carbon-free resources, including wind and solar generation. In January, Platte River announced it had signed a longterm PPA for 150 megawatts of new wind power that, when operational, could elevate its noncarbon generating portfolio to approximately 48 percent.

An additional 20 megawatts of new solar capacity would provide enough energy to power approximately 4,000 homes bringing our non-carbon portfolio to nearly 50 percent. Battery storage, if added, would help Platte River to continue providing energy from the installation for a short period of time, after the Sun goes down, if clouds block the Sun’s rays or to help balance the intermittency of other renewable energy sources. It may also be used to help meet peak load demand for a short period of time without forcing Platte River to deploy other fossil fuel resources.

To bid on the project, proposals need to be delivered to Platte River no later than 4 p.m. Mountain time Friday, March 30. A copy of the RFP can be found on the Platte River website.

Platte River Power Authority is a notfor-profit wholesale electricity generation and transmission provider that delivers safe, reliable, environmentally responsible and competitively priced energy and services to its owner communities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland, Colorado, for deliver to their utility customers.

1917 Book Club To Take Place March 21, 2018 On Wednesday, March 21, 2018, the 1917 Book Club returns to the Estes Park Museum to explore local title, Ann Strange Owl: A Northern Cheyenne Memoir by Ann Strange Owl-Raben and Sharon L. Arms. The program runs from 10-11:30 a.m. and is held in the Museum Meeting Room. Light snacks will be provided. This program is free and registration is required, limited to 50 participants. It is strongly encouraged that participants read the book prior to the program to take part in the discussion.

The March selection, Ann Strange Owl, chronicles the Ann’s life, from her birth on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, to the world- renowned trading post in the Colorado Rockies, and every stop in between. The authors, Ann Strange Owl-Raben and Sharon L.

Museum Pauses Active Collecting During Collections Move Recently, the Estes Park Museum was granted use of the Town of Estes Park’s building at 220 4th Street. This building will become a temporary location for collections storage, processing and research.

The initial steps of the move will take place in the upcoming months. Museum staff will relocate approximately 8,000 artifacts from a warehouse on Elm Road to the 4th Street building. Next will be relocation of the 22,000 artifacts currently stored at the Museum. During this process, the Estes Park Museum must temporarily suspend acceptance of object, photograph, book and archive donations from March 1 through Dec. 31, 2018.

This temporary suspension is necessary to: 1. Prepare for and complete the relocation of Museum collections to the tempo-

rary storage facility, allowing the collection to be assessed, refined, cared for and properly housed.

2. Allow museum staff and volunteers to track and update computer records for each artifact, ensuring efficient public access to the collection.

3. Provide an opportunity for collections to be researched by staff and refined per professional standards, Estes Park Museum Collections policies, and institutional mission.

Access to the Museum’s collection will be limited during the move. However, the online database will not be interrupted and can be found at estespark.pastperfectonline.com. “IT’S NOT THE YEARS IN YOUR LIFE…IT’S THE LIFE IN YOUR YEARS” These are the words of Abraham Lincoln many years ago, and they are so true, aren’t they? We’ve all known people that didn’t live too long, but their lives were well lived. They enjoyed each day and relished every moment with family and friends, co-workers and others with whom they were blessed to interact. I got this story from an unknown source that seems to illustrate a life that seems so content and fulfilled.

“An American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked him how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied, ‘Only a little while.’ The American then asked why he didn’t stay out longer and catch more fish. The fisherman said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The visitor then asked, ‘But what do you do with the rest of your time?’

With a broad smile on his face the fisherman replied, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play my guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life!”

The American scoffed, ‘I’m a Harvard graduate with an MBA and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several more boats, until you have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You could control the product, the processing and the distribution. You would probably want to leave this small fishing village and move to Mexico City, and from there to Los Angeles and eventually to New York City where you would run your expanding enterprise.’

The Mexican fisherman listened intently to all he said, then asked, ‘But, how long will all this take?’

The American thought for a moment and then replied, “Fifteen to twenty years, I would guess.’ ‘But what then?’ the fisherman asked. The American laughed and said, ‘That’s the most exciting part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.’ ‘Millions? Then what?’ the native fisherman asked. With a broad smile, the visitor said, almost triumphantly, ‘Then you could retire. You could move to a small coastal fishing village where you could sleep late, fish a little, play with your children, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll into the village in the evening where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.’”

We can easily guess the ‘rest of the story’, can’t we? The wise fisherman would simply shake his head, amused that this foreigner just doesn’t get it. He’s already got that. Why go to all that trouble, only to finally achieve what he already enjoys every day?

There are many people who think much like the visiting ‘wise man’. They give up many of the simple pleasures and things of a good life in order to embark on a life of pursuing things that will eventually bring them right back where they started.

What I appreciate about Estes Park is that we have so many pleasant, ongoing experiences that make it easy for us to find the contentment and joy of the native fisherman. We see people jogging around the Lake, watching the wonder of the abundant wildlife, enjoying the Park and the people. How often do we stop to ponder that many people are working so diligently in the ‘tradition’ of the American visitor, who then drive hundreds, even thousands of miles to come and enjoy those things that we enjoy every day. May we, like the fisherman, appreciate and treasure what we have.

Call For Entries For Fiber Affair Fiber Affair is the umbrella name for the fiber events being highlighted in Estes Park in the month of June.

In 2011 the Fiber Arts Council of Estes Park (FACE) formed and started exploring how to expand a fiber arts focus Estes Park. Many conversations later and networking with the Wool Market team, Fiber Affair and FACE of Fiber in the Rockies and Yarn Bombing have become annual events since 2013.

The Fiber Affair local’s exhibits will be seen throughout town June 1-30. So far, we have display spaces reserved at the hospital, US Bank, Snowy Peaks, Weaver’s Attic and the library. Hermit Park Open Space Reopened To The Public On March 1

Hermit Park Open Space, located two miles southeast of Estes Park, reopened to the public on Thursday, March 1.

This is a limited opening with portions of the campgrounds and cabin loop opening for the season. The road through Hermit Park will be open to vehicles to the group pavilion and Kruger Rock Trail parking areas. Visitors may still access the Moose Meadow and Limber Pine trails via foot, bike or horse.

Access to trails and the open space itself is weather dependent. Roads and trails may be closed due to muddy or

Duck Race Festival To See Several New Features

The 2018 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival will connect with donors, sponsors and duck lovers in three exciting new ways.

To streamline operations and reduce operational costs, hundreds of merchants will be contacted by email next week instead of by U.S. mail.

This email will outline the prize collection process.

“We hope the new process will be easier for donors and volunteers,” said Debbie Delaney, merchant prize coordinator.

“Merchants will receive an email from the Duck Race committee shortly after March 1. After they have read about the new process, they simply hit “Reply,” fill in their prizes, and then hit “Send.”

Merchants will also be able to download and print prize forms. The prize forms can either be mailed to the Duck Race at P.O. Box 1226, Estes Park, CO 80517 at any time, or dropped off during Duck Central hours of operation at The Ridgeline Hotel after March 30.

“We think everyone will enjoy the new Duck Central location at The Ridgeline Hotel and the friendly Duck Central staff,” 2018 ‘Big Duck’ Brad Rosenbaum said.

Finally, an updated and redesigned website will go live on March 1, two months before the day the ducks swim.

Newcomers Homecoming Event The big event in March is Newcomers Homecoming 2018. This annual event is open to active members and alumni, and will celebrate the club’s success at introducing new arrivals to this special mountain community.

The event is being held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23rd, at the new Estes Valley Community Center (660 Community Drive).

Homecoming 2018 offers many fun activities for everyone to enjoy, including fellowship, live music, dancing, photo memories, private tours of the facility

and more. Our golfers can even take their turn on the center’s high tech golf simulator. There will be plenty of food and refreshments for everyone. Participants may bring alcoholic beverages of their choosing. Active members are encouraged to bring an appetizer to add to the feast, while alumni need only bring themselves. Fine Arts Guild To Present “Private Lives” Rehearsals for the Fine Arts Guild’s production of Noel Coward’s Private Lives are underway and the set is nearing completion! Director, Greig Steiner says that things are moving along and the set, which he also designed and has been instrumental in constructing and decorating, is closer to being finished than is often the case at this point in the process. It’s a testament to Greig’s ingenuity that a single small stage can start out as two balconies overlooking the sea and be transformed into a posh apartment in Paris.

Private Lives is the story of two couples honeymooning at a French resort by the sea, where by chance they have adjoining suites and balconies. Elyot, now married to Sybil, is enjoying the view when the woman from the other couple, Amanda, comes onto her balcony and he realizes

that she is his former wife. Have years of divorce tamed the flames of passion or is there still a spark to be ignited? And what about the new spouses?

Elyot Prynne is played by Charles Phares and his wife Sibyl by Jessica Michak. Victor Chase is played by Ben Edwards and his wife Amanda by Julie Phares. The cast is rounded out by Stephanie Soliday who plays Louise, the French maid who only speaks French.

Performances will be at Hempel Auditorium, YMCA of the Rockies, March 16, 17, 23, & 24 at 7:30 p.m. and on March 18 and 24 at 2:00 p.m.

Auditions For “How To Eat Like A Child” The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is excited to announce auditions for the summer Youth Theater Camp production of How to Eat Like a Child and Other Lessons in Not Being a Grown-up.

Students who are currently in third grade through high school are invited to join us for a summer production of How to Eat Like a Child. This musical comedy presents lessons on childhood including topics like how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, how to act after being sent to your room, and how to laugh hysterically. This camp provides a wellrounded musical theatre experience including dancing, acting, singing and stage production. Learn how to audition, create a character, perform in an ensemble, and work creatively as a group plus so much more.

There are opportunities for all skill levels.

Please note: Due to the rapid pace and demands of this production, we ask that students commit to the full length of every day of camp in order to fully stage this show.

The Youth Theater Camp is a two-week tuition based camp comprised of two parts; a production camp for students interested in acting, dancing and singing and a technical camp for students interested in the behind the scenes aspects of theater.

The production camp allows students to learn or hone acting skills, and culminates in two public performances. Camp will be held from 9:00-4:00 Monday through Friday, July 9th-20th. Perform-

ances will be Saturday, July 21st and Sunday, July 22nd.

The technical camp is for students, sixth grade through high school. Students interested in the technical aspects of theater do not need to audition, but should attend the audition to complete required paperwork. Technical Theater Camp students will help construct and paint the set, make props and serve as backstage light and sound crew. The above dates apply.

Auditions will be held Sunday, March 11th, at 1:00 in the Estes Valley Library’s Hondius Room and Monday, March 12th at 6:30 in the library’s Wasson Room. To prepare for the audition, students will be asked to sing a song of their choice (A cappella or with cd) and read/perform a monologue. Choose one of several sample monologues in the audition packet available at the library’s circulation desk.

The production team includes Kerry Aiken, theatrical direction, Denise Stookesberry, musical direction, Melinda Workman, accompanist, and a technical director.

Tuition for the camp is $225 and for the technical camp $175. A limited number of scholarships based on financial need are available.

EVRPD is pleased to offer a self-care massage class series at the new Estes Valley Community Center.

Classes will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays: March 19, April 16, and May 21. The cost for each class is $10, and participants can register and pay for each class individually. EVICS PlaygroupsExciting Times Ahead

Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) has some exciting changes happening with their weekly playgroups. Playgroups occur every Wednesday from 10-11 throughout the year. Over time we have changed the format and location based off parent and staff feedback. Currently we are averaging 10 families (with their children) each week and we hope our groups continue to grow!

Playgroups provide a critical opportunity for social connections between parents and their kids ages 0-5. We offer rotating themes focusing on certain developmental domains to enhance your child’s growth and development and not to mention they are a lot of fun!

Starting in March we have formed a new partnership with the Estes Valley Community Center. Playgroups will continue to be offered on Wednesdays from 10-11 at our new location-The Community Center. There may be some

special exceptions to that schedule, and we will make sure to share that through our email list as well as Facebook page.

Each week we will rotate through the Community Center amenities. The schedule for March is as follows: 7th-the pool, 14th-gym, 21st-pool and there will be no playgroup on March 28th. On pool days please bring a towel and on gym days please wear non marking sole shoes.

Strollers are welcome in the gym space. Attending our playgroups will not require membership or a daily pass fee.

They will continue to be a free community service for any family with children ages 0-5 participating in our program. This is not a drop off program, and caregivers are required to stay and actively engage in the activities with their children each week.

Boy Scout Food Drive To Benefit Crossroads Ministry Food Bank This Saturday, March 3 This Saturday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estes Park Boy Scout units will conduct a “Scouting for Food” collection at the Estes Park Safeway to benefit the Crossroads Ministry food bank in Estes.

Steve Lambert, Scouting’s volunteer Commissioner for Estes Park commented, “Scouting for Food is a community service project in which boys and girls in Boy Scout units donate time and Scouting’s name to collect food and increase awareness of local food bank needs.”

Easter will be soon here (Sunday, April 1) and Becky Gruhl, Crossroads Ministry’s Volunteer and Pantry Manager is anxious to restock Crossroad’s shelves to prepare for its annual Easter distribution. Becky observed, “Estes has many seasonal workers, and by this time late in winter Crossroads shelves are near bare.”

Local Scout units participating in the March 3 event are Pack 8 (sponsored by the Estes Park Lions Club), Troop 8

(sponsored by American Legion Post 119), and Emergency Services Post 911 (sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District and the Estes Park Medical Center Ambulance Service).

On Saturday, March 3, Scouts at the entrance to Safeway will provide a flyer listing the most needed foods, and then collect the foods for delivery to the Crossroads Ministry food bank in Estes. All contributions are tax deductible.

In 2016, the Scouts collected a record 2,237 pounds of food for Crossroads.

This year with Easter needs in sight, help the Scouts beat that goal and let’s deliver 2,300 pounds of food to Crossroads.

EPES Robotic Team Traveling To State Competition This Weekend Estes Park Elementary started a competitive Robotics Team this year. Thirteen students have worked hard since October and have attended four tournaments in Longmont. One team, the Electric Shock, qualified for the state tournament and National Tournament by placing first at one of the competitions.

Luke Walker, Cullen Fitzgerald and Blake Marcantonio will be traveling to Trail Ridge Middle School in Longmont this Saturday, March 2 to compete at the State Competition. We are all so excited and proud of the accomplishments of the EPES Robotics Team.

Rhythm Future Quartet Returns To Estes Park March 8!

In this interview, EP News explores the upcoming Rhythm Future Quartet concert at Park Theatre, which takes place next Thursday, March 8th. We interviewed Erika Metzler and Greg Miles – the two locals who have organized last years event and are bringing it back to the citizens of Estes Park.

EP NEWS: How great that you two are bringing this wonderful quartet back to Estes Park! How were you able to pull this off?

M&M: Thanks! We’re so excited to be bringing them back. Last year’s show was such a success, with the excellent performance of these guys, the theatre being sold out to standing room, the audience participation and excitement; it was a no brainer that we wanted to do it again.

Plus, we were able to pay the band better than agreed – because we wanted them to WANT to come back. So when Jason (Anick; violinist) contacted us a couple of months ago, we jumped at the chance ...

EP NEWS: So remind us, what is the significance of Rhythm Future Quartet and what they’re doing?

M&M: Well, they are a contemporary version of the music of Django Reinhardt – who founded the genre of music known as Gypsy Jazz. They continue to promote his style and they actually push the boundaries a bit, by crafting their own original compositions within that genre – as well as performing jazz standards, and even more contemporary

work – such as covers of The Beatles.

EP NEWS: Who was Django Reinhardt?

M&M: Django was born a gypsy – and was raised within that culture – in a traveling caravan. As a young boy, he actually started out on banjo and was a prodigious talent. He later switched to guitar, and as a young man, played gigs in Paris. He lived just outside of Paris, in a wagon within the Gypsy community.

He was badly burned one night, after returning home from playing at a club, and doctors intended to amputate at least one of his limbs. He ultimately proved the doctors wrong, and walked out of the hospital on his own (though he would always have a limp and use a cane). He had to teach himself to play guitar again, as his ring and pinky finger of his left hand were basically useless, having been badly scarred in the burn.

He developed a reputation for his smooth style and lightning fast runs – and amazingly, this was done with only two fingers (first and second). He heard Louis Armstrong, was inspired to learn more, and soon after met Stephane Grappelli – a violinist also in Paris. The two started playing together and eventually formed the Hot Club of France. Their style of music created its own place within the Jazz world, and the genre lives on today – in part, thanks to contemporary musicians who work to keep it alive – such as Rhythm Future Quartet.

EP NEWS: So who is Rhythm Future Quartet, and how did you come in contact with them?

M&M: The band consists of violinist Jason Anick – an award-winning composer, and one of the youngest professors at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston. Olli Soikkeli is a guitarist who moved to New York from Finland just a few years ago. His work on the fretboard is absolutely amazing . .. and some of the fastest fingerings you’ll ever see. Max O’Rourke was the winner of the 2015 Saga award from DjangoFest Northwest, and is on second guitar, playing rhythm behind Olli. Greg Loughman is a top call bassist and is a much sought after musician in the club scene of Boston and New York.

We had learned of Rhythm Future Quartet a couple of years ago through social media; and in the Fall of 2016, we were able to get them here for a private house concert. The response was excellent – so we were able to bring them back in March of last year, with Park Theatre as the venue. This has been an incredibly smooth, easy event to create and put into place – with all of our sponsors immediately wanting to participate.

There was absolutely no hesitation on anyone’s part. We’ve had great support from the community as a whole, and ticket sales have been really strong. It looks like we’re back on track to sell out just like last year.

EPNEWS: How would you describe what’s in store for someone attending this concert, and what’s going to be different this year?

M&M: The doors open at 6, and the band starts at 7 and plays for an hour, takes a half hour intermission, and plays again from 8:30 until 9:30. So it doesn’t run too late. Their performance is truly spectacular. We cannot tell you how many people have come up to us and told us that the show last year was the best thing they’d ever been to in Estes Park. That is so gratifying. So, most people will walk out of there in awe of what they’ve just experienced. Many people will tell you that Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest guitar player in the world and even he says these guys are amazing.

So the experience will be delicious – both in sight and sound. And...the Historic Park Theatre is the oldest operating theatre in the country. It’s the perfect venue to host this kind of music. The acoustics are excellent, and it might feel like you’re transported back to 1930s Paris. As well, Elkins Whiskey, Lumpy Ridge Beer, and Snowy Peaks Wine are available in the lobby. So this is a unique event that is not to be missed. And as for what’s different, the band has new music they’re performing, as well as a new song they’ve recently written called “Colorado.” And there’s an after party with the band at Bird & Jim restaurant after the show.

Sister Cities’ Annual Costa Rican Dinner

On March 3 the Estes Park Sister Cities Association is hosting its annual dinner at Estes Park’s Other Side Restaurant.

Short On Days, Long On Fun For Newcomers’ Club February has seen many additions to the Newcomers’ Club regularly scheduled events. Snow-shoe hikes with cookouts at Sprague Lake, square dancing at Oskar Blues in Lyons, and Super Bowl parties have been fun activities of note.

Everyone is looking forward to our next General Meeting, however, which is being held at The Trailhead Restaurant located just east of the Fall River Entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

March 15, 2018, is the date and activities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. This month attendees will be signing up for one of two meals: Pasta Primavera which includes linguine, kale, seasoned vegetables, garlic, olive oil, parmesan cheese, sundries tomatoes and a side of garlic bread. The other choice is The Trailhead’s famous elk stew with seasonal vegetables, sour cream and cornbread.

Our March 15th program will be a “don’t miss.” The guest speakers will be from The Estes Valley Land Trust (EVLT). They are Vice-President Robin Harding and Executive Director Jeff Boring. For generations people have recognized that there is something special in the Estes Valley – something not found elsewhere, something intimately linked to the pristine beauty of the area’s natural landscapes. The core purpose of the Estes Valley Land Trust is to preserve those special qualities of this

Time for Financial “Spring Cleaning” The days are longer and the temperatures are warmer – so it must be spring.

For many of us, that means it’s time for some spring cleaning. But why stop with sprucing up your living space? This year, consider extending the “spring cleaning” concept to your financial environment, too.

How can you tidy your finances? Here are some suggestions: • “De-clutter” your portfolio. As you go through your home during your spring cleaning rounds, you may notice that you've acquired a lot of duplicate objects – do you really need five mops? – or at least some things you can no longer use, like a computer that hasn’t worked since 2010. You can create some valuable space by getting rid of these items. And the same principle can apply to your investment portfolio, because over the years you may well have acquired duplicate investments that aren’t really helping you move toward your goals. You may also own some investments, which, while initially fitting in to your overall strategy, no longer do so. You could be better off by selling your “redundant” investments and using the proceeds to purchase new ones that will provide more value.

• Get organized. During your spring cleaning, one of your key goals may be to get organized. So you might want to rearrange the tools in your garage or establish a new filing system in your home office. Proper organization is also important to investors – and it goes beyond having your brokerage and 401(k) statements in nice neat piles. For example, you may have established IRAs with different financial services companies. By

moving them to one provider, you may save some fees and reduce your paperwork, but, more important, you may find that such a move actually helps you better manage your investments.

You’ll know exactly where your money is going, and it could be easier to follow a single investment strategy. Also, with all your IRAs in one place, it will be much easier for you to manage the required minimum distributions you must start taking when you turn 70-1/2.

(These distributions are not required for Roth IRAs.) • Protect your family’s financial future. When cleaning up this spring, you may notice areas of concern around protecting your home – perhaps there’s a crack in your window, or your fence is damaged or part of your chimney is crumbling. Your financial independence – and that of your family – also needs protection. Is your life insurance sufficient to pay for your mortgage, college for your kids and perhaps some retirement funds for your spouse? Do you have disability insurance that can provide you with some income if you become ill or injured and can’t work for a while? Have you considered the high costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay? A financial professional can help you determine if your insurance coverage is adequate for all these needs.

Consider putting these spring cleaning suggestions to work. They may help you keep your financial house in good shape for all the seasons yet to arrive.

Executive Director Jeffrey Boring joined EVLT in May 2016. Prior to joining the Land Trust, Jeffrey worked with the Larimer County Natural Resources Department and the Big Thompson Watershed Forum in Loveland. He also worked as a Conservation Director for the Athens Land Trust in Athens, Geor-

gia. Jeffrey began his conservation career in the Atlanta office of The Nature Conservancy.

The program will focus on describing the Estes Valley Land Trust, a non-profit organization that has served the Estes Park community for more than thirty years. The land trust preserves land and the quality of life in the Estes Valley and this program will highlight our major accomplishments and current projects.

Combined Jazz Bands Give Annual Concert Together On Wednesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m., at the Estes Park High School (EPHS) Auditorium, the public is invited to hear, not one but two outstanding local jazz bands. The EPHS Jazz Band and the EP Jazz Big Band (JBB) will give their annual side-by-side concert, beginning with the high-school group and ending with two numbers that the two jazz bands will perform together. While sitting together, side-by-side, the adults remember and appreciate the effort it takes to master a musical instrument, and the students can see first-hand that they are investing their efforts into a lifetime avocation.

The EPHS Jazz Band, under the direction of the Estes Park Schoolsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Director of Bands, Sheridan Monroe, will start off with Gordon Goodwinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Act Your Age, arranged by Peter Blair. With students ranging in age from fourteen to eighteen, is this good advice? They seem much more mature than their age would indicate. US Trail Running Conference On Track For Groundbreaking Certification

Organizers seek to take a further step forward and share education in leadership of responsible trail running across all trail races and trail runners.

The US Trail Running Conference is seeking to be the first sport related Conference to be awarded a certification from the Council for Responsible Sport for the 2018 event. The industry leading Conference connects and empowers race directors, trail runners, and trade leaders, and works to share best practices with the trail running community.

The sixth annual US Trail Running Conference takes place August 29-31, 2018, at the Dairy Creek Golf Club, and is presented by the City of San Luis Obispo, CA, and Race Roster, the fastest growing endurance registration website in North America.

The Conference is also held in partnership with the American Trail Running Association, and Race SLO. The Conference weekend rounds out with the SLO Ultra, with four race distances over trails in San Luis Obispo, including the RRCA State trail marathon championships.

The Council for Responsible Sport have certified hundreds of sporting events that have completed a process which evaluates that the event has made a thorough and systematic effort to become more responsible. The Certifica-

tion process encourages event organizers to consider key goals and objectives when dealing with procurement, resource management, community legacy, access, and equity. Since 2008, the Council for Responsible Sport has certified 150 sporting events that have completed a systematic process that evaluates responsible event production plans, policies and procedures across five broad categories; planning and commu-

nications, procurement, resource management, access and equity, and community legacy.

Board member and former Council executive director Keith Peters has worked with US Trail Running Conference organizers the past two years to help quantify numerous efforts to implement more responsible event production practices, and looks forward to the Conference’s pursuit of Council certification this year: “The 2018 US Trail Running Conference is on track to become the

One interesting factor is that nearly 85% of food waste comes from prepared food. This means that farms, manufacturing, transportation, wholesalers and grocery stores together only account for the other 15%.

How much food do we waste in our own homes, and how can we reduce that amount? Try keeping a small notebook to track why food is wasted in your household. Send me your top five causes and I will do another article publishing the combined results. (Names are optional).

Meanwhile, here are a few things we can do to save the planet. According to the National Resources Defense Council, the average household throws out $2,200 per year in food waste alone. What could you do with an extra $40-45 per week?

Before you shop for food: 1. Plan your menus. This reduces impulse buying and the necessity of discarding food you forgot you had.

2. Never shop hungry. Hunger will increase purchase of food that lacks nutritional value but is “ready to eat.” (Of course use your reusable shopping bags).

3. Consider the sizes of the packaging you buy. Buying large packages is fine if you have a large family or if you have a way to freeze the extra until it again fits into your meal plan.

4. Check the “best buy” dates. Do not buy outdated food. On the other hand,

most food dates are well in advance of expiration.

5. Stick to the plan!

When storing the groceries: 6. Break up those large packages of meat and other freezable food now.

Store in meal size packages for defrosting.

7. Rotate your canned goods, placing newer dates in the back. Found something outdated? Check on-line before discarding. Most canned goods are good at least a year past the date on the can.

(If it is something you bought on impulse and probably will not use, take it to Crossroads while it is still useable.)

Day of the meal: 9. Check to see how many will be home for the meal. As you cook, make a plan for the leftovers.

10. Serve in the kitchen. It has the same effect as trayless cafeterias.

11. After the meal, repackage the leftovers. Freeze any refrigerated food that will not be eaten in three days.

12. Think about what you would do differently and, if you are keeping track, make notes.

6th Annual Estes Park Friends Of Scouting Breakfast

On Friday, March 16, the Estes Park community is invited to celebrate ScoutIrish Day as we renew the camaraderie of Scouting and support Scout Leaders in delivering the fun and values of Scouting to Estes youth.

This year’s breakfast at The Other Side Restaurant features Estes Park High School Principal Chuck Scott sharing insights into the exciting “Skilled Professions Renaissance” taking place in Estes schools beginning this fall.

In addition, Eagle Scout Jacob Morse and Explorer Megan Miller— both members of Estes Emergency Services Explorer Post 911—will share what Scouting means to them.

In announcing the breakfast, Chairman, Bill Marshall observed, “This year we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Troop 8, chartered in 1938 by American Legion Post 119. During those 80 years, 26 Scoutmasters and countless volunteers delivered Scouting to over 1,500 youth—of which 84 achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Estes is fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers devoting countless hours to delivering the fun and values of Scouting to over 65 Estes young people. As a community, we also benefit from service projects that Scouts undertake as they earn Scout ranks. We encourage the community to join us in

this once a year celebration supporting Scouting, and we especially hope that former Scouts, Scouters, Eagle Scouts and Order of the Arrow members will join us.”

Houston, TX and moved to Estes Park in 2012. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer the end of 2012. He loved the mountains and felt blessed to have spent the end of his life in beautiful Estes Park amid the love and support of his wonderful friends and a loving community.

Julian Wojcik Julian Wojcik, of Pinewood Springs, passed away on February 20, 2018. He was born in Lwow, Poland on September 13, 1938.

Julian received a Masters of Architecture in Krakow, Poland.

He worked as a designer, first in Poland from 1973, and then in the United States for several years at Johnson Controls as a heating and cooling system engineer at the nuclear plants in Perry, Ohio and Rockford, Illinois. In 1989, following his passion for cooking, he and his family bought Villa Tatra, the Polish restaurant in Pinewood Springs, Colorado. He was a master chef for many years, continuing

the culinary traditions of his homeland, and adding a very successful smoked salmon business to the restaurant operation. He will be remembered for his creativity, brilliant mind, wonderful sense of humor and a kind heart.

His memories will be cherished by his wife, son, grandchildren, relatives, and a whole host of friends.

The funeral service will take place on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, 920 Big Thompson Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.

Cleo Bryant Cleo Margaret Bryant May 4, 1925 – Feb. 13, 2018 On February 13, 2018, the world was left sadly diminished by the loss of a most remarkable and compassionate woman – Cleo Margaret Shannon Bryant. Cleo’s life spanned 92 years of changes that connected one century to the next.

Born on a snowy May 4, 1925, Cleo grew up the oldest of six on a farm three miles northwest of Keota, Iowa. As the oldest, she was taught to contribute to the farm chores from an early age and was responsible for driving the tractor at age 10. Some of her first memories included attending midnight mass transported in a horsedrawn sleigh, heated by blankets and warmed bricks.

During WWII, she was recruited to become Iowa's youngest school teacher, teaching in a one-room, stove-heated schoolhouse at age 17. Despite growing up amidst the hardships of the Great Depression and a global conflict, Cleo was a bright picture of kindness, compassion, and joy and a humbling example of human resilience.

She married Keith Bryant in 1950. Together they shared a photography business from their home in Sigourney. In a world of black and white photography, Cleo practiced the now lost art of hand painting portraits and had a keen eye for framing a perfect shot in the darkroom.

Cleo will be remembered for her special ability to attract friends from many walks of life. Without fail, a visitor could locate Cleo at a social function – such as brunch at the Senior Center in Estes Park, Colo. – simply by looking for the most animated area of the room.

A cheeky remark was never far from

her lips, which she always delivered with just the right amount of twinkle in her eye. Cleo and close friend Sally could often be found giggling themselves to the point of tears or haunting a local pool hall as the world's most unlikely pool sharks.

Cleo was an avid traveler. She was an Arizona snowbird and spend summers in Estes Park for about 20 years. Visiting grandchildren was another passion. She particularly enjoyed visits to ancestral homes in Germany and Ireland.

She was preceded in death by her parents Francis Aloysius “Allie” Shannon and Margaret Peifer Shannon, husband Keith, infant daughter Margaret Lou, brothers Eugene and Robert, and sister Ruth. She is survived by sisters Dorothy and Marjorie, sons Michael, Tom (wife, Joy) and Dan (wife, Stasia), grandchildren Joan (husband, David), April, Katherine (husband, Grant), Garrison, Fiona and Mercedes as well as great grandson Cody. She is also survived by her best friend Alyce Sally Becker.

Cleo will truly be missed by all whose lives were enriched by knowing her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 24th at 3 p.m. at The Good Samaritan Estes park village at 1901 Ptarmigan Trail.
