Great-horned Owls

The male Great-horned owl perches on a limb in front of the larger female, acting as guardian. She peeks out from behind to survey the scene. This is a mated pair. We can expect two or three eggs to be laid in about a week. They may use the same ledge nest as the last two years but, that remains to be seen. Decision Reached On Crater Trail Management In RMNP A decision document has been signed by the Intermountain Regional Office, National Park Service that will enable Rocky Mountain National Park to permanently close the one-mile long Crater Trail to protect sensitive natural and cultural resources. For the past three years, the Crater Trail has been closed year-round pending the outcome of public input and a decision on the Environmental Assessment. Prior to that, the trail was typically closed annually from May to August 15, during the bighorn lambing season, and only open two months from mid-August through midOctober.

An Environmental Assessment for the Crater Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park was prepared in October 2017, to examine alternative actions and environmental impacts associated with the long-term management and use of

the Crater Trail. The NPS previously conducted public scoping on the project in 2014 and 2016. The informal trail was never designed or constructed; instead it was user-created over time. The trail was steep and severely eroded in sections and impacting the alpine tundra. It also bisected a prehistoric archeological site.

As part of the decision, park staff will remove the existing footbridge near the trailhead and place signs informing visitors of the closure. The abandoned trail surface will be stabilized and revegetated with native vegetation to help restore natural conditions. The parking area at the trailhead will remain to provide parking for the Milner Pass area.

Rocky Mountain National Park To Allow Bicycle Use On Two-Mile Section Of East Shore Trail On West Side Of Park A Final Rule will be published in the Federal Register on March 2, 2018, that allows bicycle use on a two-mile section of the East Shore Trail within Rocky Mountain National Park. The rule can be found at www.regulations.gov. Search for the regulation identifier number “1024-AE31.” The East Shore Trail is an existing hiking and equestrian trail on the west side of the park near the Town of Grand Lake. The East Shore Trail Area is excluded from the park’s designated wilderness.

Trail proponents, including the Headwaters Trails Alliance, will be responsi-

ble for completing work on the trail before it opens to public bicycle use.

The timeline is still being negotiated.

After extensive public involvement, a decision document was signed that approved bicycle use on this two-mile section of the trail inside the park. Required trail reroutes to safely accommodate bicycle use triggered rulemaking per the National Park Service Bicycle Rule.

“All Who Dare” Special Evening Program At Beaver Meadows Visitors Center Rocky Mountain National Park is privileged to collaborate with Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center to present a special showing of All Who Dare on Friday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m.

This free program will be held at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.

All Who Dare follows nine incoming Eagle Rock students who leave behind their families, friends, and familiar environments as they surpass their limits in the Lost Creek Wilderness of Colorado. The students have one mission: Make it to high school.

Guided by experienced wilderness educators, the students are challenged physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially during this once-in-a-lifetime journey of personal growth. They quickly learn that there are no excuses in the wilderness and that completing the trip is only the first step in taking responsibility for their lives. All Who Dare – also the school’s motto – provides a compelling look at the unconventional approach of a nationally acclaimed innova-

tive high school that provides hope for young people who are striving to turn their lives around.

Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center, located in Estes Park, is an innovative, tuition-free, residential high school that is committed to helping the most disengaged students find their way back to an appreciation of education.

For many students, it’s a last chance to find educational success. But first, they must have a desire to change their lives, starting with a wilderness expedition that will test them in every way. Estes Park Police Department Seeks Volunteer Auxiliary Members The Estes Park Police Department is seeking volunteers for its Police Auxiliary Unit. Auxiliary members perform uniformed, unarmed patrols and assist with special events and other activities ranging from fingerprinting and vacation checks to providing specialized assistance with investigations. Interested individuals should complete a Town of Estes Park employment application, available at www.estes.org/jobs or at the Police Department window at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Applications should be turned in by 5 p.m. April 6, 2018. The selected candidates will be required to attend a training class on the evening of April 27 and the morning of April 28, 2018.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, friendly and outgoing, and must enjoy working with people. Applicants should also be able to stand or walk for up to four hours, consent to a criminal and driving background check, have no felony convictions, no more than two

moving traffic violations within the past 12 months, and no warrants or misdemeanor convictions in the last five years. A successful interview with the Police Department will also be required.

Auxiliary members come from many diverse backgrounds and life experiences; police or military experience is not required.

The Auxiliary Unit, formed in 2001, is a 20-member volunteer team whose purpose is to enhance the individual and collective safety of the community by assisting the Estes Park Police Department. A few of the special projects carried out by the Auxiliary team are the Citizen's Police Academy and the Blue Santa program. Members are required to donate a minimum of 96 hours per year and attend a variety of trainings.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On February 26 at 8:01 p.m. police were called to a disturbance on Kundtz Lane. Upon arrival they arrested a 43 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with third degree assault, criminal mischief and domestic violence

and transported her to Larimer County Detention Center.

On February 28 at 9:12 p.m. police stopped a 58 year old male driver from Whitman, MS and for speeding in the 1000 block of Big Thompson Ave. Upon further investigation, he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and he was charged with DWAI and later released on a summons.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

Update To The Community-A Message From Families For Estes

The board of directors of Families for Estes (FFE) would like to take the chance to update the public on some recent discussions that are taking place. A few months ago FFE was approached about creating a non-profit merger by the steering committee of the future Estes Park School Foundation.

At this point there has been no formal action or decision made by the FFE board of directors. We hope that in sharing this information, we remain open about our future and more importantly people feel free to provide their thoughts and feedback about these decisions.

The Estes Park School Foundation has a vision to create a district wide foundation that would incorporate community outreach as well as providing a vast array of additional funding avenues for the school district. The steering committee recognized the work FFE has done on behalf of families, specifically our community outreach and support of educational opportunities for families in Estes Park. The conversations currently happening involve how FFE can best be of assistance to the foundation goals, without duplicating efforts and without additionally taxing our already small but

mighty board of directors. We will continue to evaluate what this partnership could look like in the coming months.

We would like to make a call to action for members of the community who value our work and would be interested in becoming an active member of our board. Proposals Requested For Visitor Profile And Visit Estes Park Economic Impact Studies Visit Estes Park has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a consultant to conduct two research projects: (1) a Visitor Profile study, and (2) an Economic Impact study. The studies will help to shape Visit Estes Park’s overall destination marketing strategy and demonstrate the value of previous marketing efforts.

The results of the studies will be used to communicate with the local community and elected officials concerning the visitor economy and its impact on the Estes Valley. Previous studies have shown that travel and tourism have a positive economic impact on the community, including increased business ac-

tivity and sales-tax receipts. The Town of Estes Park is partnering with Visit Estes Park on the Visitor Profile study to obtain data about visitors that can used to inform policy decisions, such as the issue of broadband internet services.

“I am excited to announce that these research projects are underway. We need solid research to guide Visit Estes Park’s marketing strategy and to demonstrate the return on investment of our marketing campaigns,” said Interim CEO Suzy Blackhurst.

Mission: New Earth Wants You!

MISSION: New Earth (MNE), a local non-profit focusing on children, youth and wildlife, opens its next Board meeting to the public.

Taking place Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Estes Valley Library, the meeting will be held in the Hondius Room beginning at 11:00 a.m. and conclude around 1:00 p.m.

"Children are our future," explains Weldon Lee, Board member and Chair of MNE. "We invite everyone in the Estes Valley to join us during this meeting and learn what we have in store for 2018."

"It'll also be a great opportunity," he adds, "to meet our Board members, including Mary Ringgenberg, our Youth Advisor and student at Estes Park High School."

Junior Election Forum There will be a Junior Election Forum held on March 21 from 7-9 p.m., in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library.

Young residents of the Estes Valley have a vested interested in what this community does. Even in elementary school, students might favor improved sidewalks and bike paths. Many informed middle school students look forward to Broadband, and, perhaps, to when the town has a Teen Hangout Space to compliment the exciting new Community Center. Students also see the benefit in open space, various town activities, and anything that protects our natural environment. High schoolers, with an eye to being full-fledged voters in the very near future, should appreciate budget balancing, zoning issues, and board experience for their resumes.

Those who attended the May 5th Meet and Greet with our Town Trustees had a chance to influence what happens in Estes Park. The next opportunity is the Junior Election Forum on March 21 where all 10 Trustee candidates will answer questions from youth (grades K-12) and from young adults not yet old enough to vote for trustees. Older adults are invited to attend as well, but are not eligible to ask questions.

Junior Election voting is April 3. EPMS and EPHS will vote in school. Grades K4 EPES, and all students not attending Estes Park School District schools will vote at the EV Library. Fifth graders should ask their teacher where they vote.

Brad Fitch and Mark Rashid Album Release Party Brad B rad Fitch and Mark Rashid will introintro duce their new album, “Making Good Time,” when they perform at Marys Lake Lodge’s Tavern 1929 on Friday, March 16th. There is no admission charge and the event is open to the public. They will begin at 6 p.m.

Fitch and Rashid have performed together since the mid-1990s, when they were in the popular Estes Park band, The Elktones. “Of the many music groups I've been part of, Mark's the one with whom I have performed the most,” Fitch said.

“Making Good Time” features new original music from Fitch and Rashid, along with a couple of their favorite cover songs. “For a long time now, Brad and I have been threatening to do a CD project together,” Rashid said.

“It only took about 25 years!”

The album is dedicated to the memory of their bandmate, the late Dick Orleans. “Making Good Time” will be available for purchase at the album release party. “It’s a record that we're really proud of and look forward to sharing with all of you,” Rashid said.

March Madness is coming! Selection Sunday is in two days! After that, fanatic fans will go gaga over b-ball for the next month.

This basketball bonanza has been taking place every year since 1939 and features the Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight and the Final Four rounds. In the end we will have a winning team made up of players so tall they have to bend down to put the ball through the hoop.

Y-a-w-n.

Basketball has always been my least favorite sport to watch. (Well, that’s not true. I detest boxing. But to me, that’s not a sport.

It’s a crime.) So when all the hoopster boosters gather round their televisions to watch a bunch of grown men dribble of all things, I will choose to cultivate my internal word nerd. (To be inclusive, I add that women have a March Madness too. I don’t watch them either.)

Here’s a warm-up for word nerdism: • A dangling participle walks into a bar.

Enjoying a cocktail and chatting with the bartender, the evening passes pleasantly.

• A bar was walked into by the passive voice.

• An oxymoron walked into a bar, and the silence was deafening.

• Two quotation marks walk into a “bar. ” • A malapropism walks into a bar, looking for all intensive purposes like a wolf in cheap clothing, muttering epitaphs and casting dispersions on his magnificent other, who takes him for granite.

• Hyperbole totally rips into this insane bar and absolutely destroys everything.

• A question mark walks into a bar?

• A non sequitur walks into a bar. In a strong wind, even turkeys can fly.

• Papyrus and Comic Sans walk into a bar.

The bartender says, "Get out -- we don't serve your type."

• A mixed metaphor walks into a bar, seeing the handwriting on the wall but hoping to nip it in the bud.

• A comma splice walks into a bar, it has a drink and then leaves.

• Three intransitive verbs walk into a bar.

They sit. They converse. They depart.

• At the end of the day, a cliché walks into a bar -- fresh as a daisy, cute as a button, and sharp as a tack.

• A run-on sentence walks into a bar it starts flirting.

With a cute little sentence fragment.

• Falling slowly, softly falling, the chiasmus collapses to the bar floor.

• A figure of speech literally walks into a bar and ends up getting figuratively hammered.

While reading these for the first time, I had to look up a couple of words to refresh my memory. It’s been 40 years since I studied grammar in high school, after all. (I admit I got caught up in the frenzy when my school, Lincoln East, won the state basketball tournament my senior year, but that’s because I had a crush on the center.)

That’s the fun of it—the looking up and learning. It’s how my little wordy nerd heart stays in shape: making my mental Air Jordans squeak while running up and down the syntax court, exercising my love of linguistics, and draining three-pointers beyond the arch in my quest for the Wooden Trophy of Words.

Rachel’s Challenge Comes To Estes Park th

On Tuesday, March 14 , the Estes Park School District will be welcoming Craig Scott from Rachel’s Challenge to speak to Middle and High school students and staff. Plans for a special community presentation from Rachel’s Challenge that evening are also being coordinated. A detailed timeline of all related events will be sent to parents and posted on the school district website and social media channels as soon as the final agenda is in place.

As a positive alternative to the National Walk Out campaign that is making headlines all over the country, the Estes Park School District sought to provide a meaningful experience for students to participate in that would allow them to have a voice, be heard, and continue to honor each other with respect and civility. While the main purpose of the program is to organize an impactful event designed with purpose that was student driven, the school district respectfully supports parents and guardians that choose to opt their children out of the exercise. The district realizes that the recent tragic events in Parkland, Florida, and the details from the Columbine tragedy could be emotional and difficult for some.

Rachel's Challenge is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious organization based in Littleton, Colorado.

This is a powerful program honoring Rachel Joy Scott who was the first student killed during the horrible tragedy at Columbine High School in 1999. The program is presented

by Rachel's brother, Craig, who was spared during the shootings but witnessed two friends being killed next to him in the library.

Rachel's Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying and help to work through feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and compassion. The programs are based on the writings and life of 17 year-old Rachel Scott, who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to those who were different, who were picked on

by others, or who were new at her school.

Rachel's Challenge motivates each individual student, staff and community member alike, to consider where they are personally in relation to the five challenges given. It also prompts the listener to reflect on their relationships with and impact on the people around them.

The message from Rachel’s Challenge

runs parallel with the important work surrounding restorative practices for schools that have been implemented this year in the Estes Park School District.

Youth In Action (YIA) is offering a grant for nonprofit organizations within the Estes Park community. The purpose of the grant is to give local nonprofits the opportunity to pursue projects to further their own mission and the community as a whole, while directly impacting Estes Park youth of all ages Youth In Action (YIA) is a collaborative program of the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC) the Estes Valley Library, Estes Park School District, and Communities That Care coalition. Youth In Action promotes strong community ties and involvement among youth while fostering a lifelong engagement in civic and philanthropic service. YIA brings together youth ages 14 to 18 from all educational environments to learn about the work of local nonprofits and civic organizations, and to build skills in leadership.

The grant process, designed and devel-

oped by YIA participants, will culminate in a Shark Tank style event on April 23 at which finalists will pitch their project proposals. Youth will award $2500 to local projects, making decisions based on guidelines they created.

EPMS Girls Basketball Team Claims Third Place At League Championship The Estes Park Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team completed one of the school’s most successful sports seasons in recent history by claiming third place at Saturday’s Northern Plains League Championship.

The LadyCats used two consecutive passes underneath the basket to score a layup with 90 seconds left to play and take a 12-9 lead over University. Estes Park’s defense, the team’s strength over the course of the season, limited the Bulldogs to a single three-point shot in the final minute of play and the LadyCats controlled the ball on offense.

Estes Park won its first five games of the season then lost four in a row, including games to perennial powerhouses Platte Valley and Eaton, before winning their final two games of the season. With two wins and a loss in the NPL tournament, the LadyCats finished the season with an 8-5 record.

The Boulder Scandinavian Dancers are coming to Good Samaritan Society – Estes Park Village this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. They have been coming to Good Sams for 12 years now to entertain the residents. They dress in traditional Scandinavian clothing and tell the history and origin of the outfits. They also give information about the music they

play and the instruments they use.

The Boulder Scandinavian Dancers have been performing for 40 years. They pride themselves on the authenticity of the material they perform. Members have studied with the world-famous folk dance and music teachers in the U.S. and abroad. They perform with enthusiasm, and a genuine love for the dances and music they present.

With Due Decision My daily mail disgorges reams of political entreaties: “Official Survey! ” “Important Questionnaire! ” “2018 Campaign Plan --Your Input Needed! ” “The Moment Is Now! ” I am exhorted to “Return Survey Today! ” preferably accompanied by monetary affirmation of my fealty to this candidate or that issue. The exclamation points underscore strain on candidates and advocacy groups as they forage for funds in what promises to be a raucous, consequential election year. And it’s only March.

“Remember in November—Tuesday is Choose Day. ” Decades ago my Sainted Irish Mother placed second in a national contest designed to boost voter registration. The winning submission: “Vote, you lucky American! ” I remember walking with pride to cast my sacred first ballot in Trenton, NJ, more than five decades ago. I recall anger when I saw, in violation of law, placards well within one hundred feet of the polling place supporting gubernatorial candidates. As my S. I.M. regularly observed, “Life is a series of the stripping away of illusions. ” Earlier this week registered Republicans and Democrats caucused across Colorado. According to the Colorado Secretary of State, “The purpose of precinct caucuses is to elect precinct committee persons and delegates to county assemblies. ” Caucus attendees help choose candidates who will be on their party’s primary ballot and play a role in shaping the party platform. On

June 26 primary elections will determine Democratic and Republican candidates for Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, legislative positions, seven seats in the U. S. House of Representatives and other offices.

The general election is 242 days away, November 6, for which you must be registered to vote. From our Secretary of State: “If you have a Colorado State driver's license or ID card issued by the Department of Revenue you may register to vote online at www.GoVoteColorado.com. If you are already a registered voter in Colorado you may confirm your registration at this website. Once your registration is verified, you may update your address and party affiliation as well. ” You will find more detailed voter information at www.sos.state.co.us.

Voting in America is voluntary: about 40% of the electorate votes in midterm elections, and almost 60% vote in Presidential years. It’s not enough; Belgium (89%), Sweden (86%), Denmark (86%) and a dozen other countries (including Mexico, France, Israel, Ireland and Canada) consistently

outperform the USA at the polls. We can do better.

America’s peaceful transition of power has not always been smooth or inclusive.

The promise of 1870s 15th Amendment to the Constitution, granting AfricanAmerican men the right to vote, was not realized for almost a century.

Women couldn’t vote until ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

The 26th Amendment in 1971 lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. Yet the question persists: why don’t more American vote?

First, confirm your own voter registration (see sos.state.co.us, above). Second, ask your family and friends to confirm their voter registration. Third, study issues and the candidates so you can speak lucidly about a person or policy. Fourth, volunteer for a candidate with whom you mainly agree. A few weeks ago I invested a morning collecting signatures to help a specific candidate be on the ballot for Governor of Colorado this coming November. I saw America in the faces of the Republicans, Democrats, Independ-

ents and non-affiliated individuals with whom I spoke as I did my civic duty.

What kind of America do you want?

How, and on what basis, will you decide for whom to vote? What is the prism through which you see our country? Private concerns and needs may be congruent with the public arena and larger interests, or they may keep us from commitment to a “greater good. ” Our social contract implies engagement in society. I believe engagement breeds empathy. Many voices in America clamor for attention (“Return Survey Today! ”), some offering ideas that may cause more discomfort than succor. However, principled fidelity to truth can help us become more rigorously alert to critical issues in the public arena and candidates who exemplify the “good” we seek. We all have responsibilities here.

My father and twin brother both ran for public office in the same New York State Assembly District, twenty-two years apart. Both were crushed in electoral landslides, both lived to tell the tale, and both became better Americans for the experience. America is still, 230 years after ratification of the United States Constitution, “young, scrappy and hungry” (thank you, Lin-Manuel). And, as investigative journalist Wes “Scoop” Nisker used to remind us, “If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own. ” Remember in November that you are, indeed, a lucky American.

Mountain Festival Coming In April The third annual Mountain Festival is coming up April 27-28. This event has grown out of the schools' celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day. It has developed into a partnership between the schools, the Town, and our community.

At its core, the event recognizes our responsibility as land stewards. The event now celebrates all aspects of Mountain Culture: the sciences, health and wellness, our cultural heritage and more.

The festival takes place at the Event Center on Friday, April 27th with non-profits, businesses, individuals, students, and clubs offering workshops and lessons.

All participants have a tie-in to mountain culture. Workshops and presentations range from the EP High School Environmental Club’s initiative for a zero waste school campus to the Mountain Shop teaching circle eight knots. Watch for Isabella Bird, who will roam the floor recalling early mountaineering adventures and her quest to

climb. There are over 50 different participants and more to confirm.

Saturday Adventures (April 28th) will take place throughout the valley. Adventures vary from water testing Fish Creek, to seeing the new beaver dams at Cheley, to snowshoeing in Rocky. Most events are family friendly, but some will be specific to certain ages or skill levels.

The Mountain Festival is seven weeks away!

Mark your calendar to come to the Event Center on Friday, April 27 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and save some space on Saturday, April 28 for an adventure.

Art at the Library exhibits resume this month as the Estes Valley Library hosts a display by local photographer and writer John Shelton. The photographs are located on both floors of the library.

Shelton lives in Estes Park and travels extensively to support his work. Before arriving in Colorado, he had lived in Nevada, Idaho and Illinois.

“My photography starts as a reflection of nature being spiritual, something vastly larger, more significant, more relevant, and yet perhaps simpler and more peaceful than we perceive our daily passage,” says Shelton of his approach.

“I like to isolate the power and beauty of our environment, but I also like to explore man’s interaction with that environment, whether natural or not—our journey, struggle and discovery of our own place within that environment,” he adds. “Often there is a juxtaposition that mankind has with nature, within our relationships with others, and ourselves.

My work ranges from natural landscapes, through urban exploration, covering events, and profiling people and even touching on the surreal.”

The local area has long been a source of inspiration for Shelton. “I spent the greater part of my childhood summers immersed in the natural environment of the West, including Estes Park—hiking, camping, and traveling to the quieter places of America where perhaps we can get in touch with ourselves and gain perspective about where to fit in with nature and life.”

“It is my hope,” he adds, “that my work will extend naturally beyond the tenor of my own world to include an even deeper understanding of a broader world perspective.”

Heat some vegetable oil in a large skillet. Meanwhile boil water and cook the noodles. While noodles are cooking heat a little oil in large skillet and fry the cubed chicken. Remove chicken and in same pan sauté the onions until transparent and then add the kale and mushrooms. Fry till kale is slightly wilted and mushrooms are cooked. Add the other canned vegetables and chicken and cover to keep I went to the middle school’s play last week to see my granddaughter Lexi in a “starring role.” All the children were darling, and I was pleasantly surprised at how hard they must have worked as they all knew their parts and seemed to enjoy themselves with out a hint of stage fright. As I watched my 12 year old, Lexi, my thoughts drifted to too how many times I have fixed ramen noodles for her. She loves them, she can now fix the dish by herself. Of course, she is such an expert on the matter that she now only likes a certain brand.

While playing on the computer I came across an adult recipe for those good old cheap noodles. It was on a website for Epicurious and Bon Appétit. It sounded pretty good, but it had no meat in it nor a couple of veggies that I like in stir fry.

So here is my adapted version of good old ramen noodles for adults.

“AND IT ISN’T WHAT IT ISN’T!” As I was getting my thoughts together for a recent article, my friend, Ray, sat down at my McDs table and asked what I was doing. When I told him I was doing an article on ‘It is what it is!’, he immediately said, “And ‘It isn’t what it isn’t!’”. I looked at him quizzically, so he explained, “Just because you share something as true, doesn’t mean that it is true, if it is false, and no matter how often you claim it’s true, “It isn’t what it isn’t!” I thanked him for what could be an article in the future. That message is relevant in our day, isn’t it, when with ‘tweets’ and ‘cyberbullying’ and all kinds of ‘accusations’, reputations and lives are ruined? Perhaps needed, if ‘it is what it is’ and truth is shared. But what a tragedy when something is misperceived, shared and believed. And it can so easily happen, as this true story shows. Meet: “Super Granny – Defender of Justice”.

An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and, upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving in her vehicle. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at the top of her voice, “I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!” The four men didn’t wait for a second invitation. They got out and ran like mad. The lady, somewhat shaken, then proceeded to load her shopping bags into the back of the car and get into the driver’s seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried again, then it dawned on her why.

A few minutes later she found her own car parked four spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into the car and then drove to a nearby police station. The sergeant to whom she told her story nearly doubled over with laughter. He motioned to the other end of the counter, where four pale men were filing a report of a carjacking by a mad, elderly woman, described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a ‘very large’ handgun. No charges were filed!

We can imagine how differently the story could have ended, if, based upon a misconception, bullets had started flying, injuring innocent people. And yet how often we are seeing this happen today as people, mistaken or, worse, moved by evil intentions, ‘blaze away’ with accusations and blame, and people like you and me, accept those without making adequate inquiry, asking: “It is what it is?” or “It isn’t what it isn’t?”

I’m writing this as I follow-up treatment at our excellent EPMC, after spending a few days there recovering from a bout with pneumonia. Can you imagine how blessed I feel that those who were charged with my treatment didn’t ‘follow rabbit trails’…every idea advanced…especially my own…but checked and re-checked the monitors, the scans, knowing that they revealed ‘It is what it is!’, thus setting the stage for my quick recovery and release. When we compare what led to my recovery to our nation’s struggles, do we sense why there fails to be appropriate and rapid solutions to our nation’s ‘crises’? Those in positions of leadership are so caught up in trying to sort out ‘what is’ and ‘what isn’t’ in so many minor things that they cannot focus on those that relate to our national security and the betterment of our nation’s people. Even more sadly we are afraid that some are like the School Resource Officer at the Florida school who, while danger and destruction was taking place in the school (our nation) are outside ‘taking a position’, seemingly concerned primarily about their own welfare.

So, what’s the message? Let’s all focus on what ‘is’ not what ‘isn’t’ and on what’s good for all, not just for ourselves.

Kirtan At Estes Park Yoga This Friday

On Friday, March 9, 2018, Estes Park Yoga will be hosting kirtan from 6:308:00 p.m. This event is open to the public; donations will be accepted.

What is kirtan? The practice of kirtan comes to us through the same channel that brings us yoga: the ancient Vedic traditions that have been kept alive in India. Yoga is aimed at calming, strengthening and balancing the body, mind and spirit. Similarly, the practice of

kirtan is designed to bring our mind, body and spirit into a unified and connected state through chanting divine names accompanied by music. By joining with others in singing the names of the divine with simple melodies, our minds are brought to a calm, meditative state.

No experience is necessary to join this practice; musical experience or ability is not required.

Rather, the community is invited to join with open minds and hearts in the hope that kirtan, or singing meditation, could be beneficial in creating peace and calm in our lives.

March Meeting Of The Estes Park Garden Club Don’t Waste Your Waste – Composting at Altitude Please join the Estes Park Garden Club on Monday, March 12th at 10:30 a.m. in the Estes Valley Library’s Hondius Room as we welcome Joan Paskewitz, Tom Tuer, and Robin and Denny Schall. From the outdoor basics to indoor red wigglers, this group will share what they have learned about using kitchen and yard waste to create compost at altitude.

They will also discuss how to improve rocky soil and boost plant health without attracting unwanted critters or the displeasure of neighbors (HOAs or POAs).

Joan and Tom will include composting basics and methods to adapt to the high country. Robin and Denny’s presentation will include the details and benefits of worm farming, how to get started and how to harvest. Tips will be included on how to successfully manage your farm in bear country.

Joan Paskewitz, a retired Physical Therapist, and Tom Tuer, a retired Mechanical Engineer, moved to Pinewood Springs just over two years ago. Both have gardened and composted for decades and are eager to learn the nuances of adapting their knowledge and experiences to their new home. Denny and Robin Schall moved to Colorado from Michigan 20 years ago and have lived in Estes Park for three years.

Denny, an engineer, was raised on a farm where he gardened as a child.

Robin is a retired Administrative Assistant and volunteers in Estes Park and at Rocky Mountain National Park.

As always, the Estes Park Garden Club presents these programs for the general interest of our community. We welcome all who are interested, you do not need to be a member to attend one of our programs. Please join us! This program is being organized by Joan Paskewitz and refreshments are sponsored by the Pinewood Springs members.

Estes Valley Quilt Guild Meeting March 14 The Estes Valley Quilt Guild meets the second Wednesday of each month at Good Samaritan Village, 1901 Ptarmigan Trail. The March meeting is on the 14th. The business meeting begins at 6:45 p.m. However, if you come at 6:30 you will have a chance to catch up with friends. If you are a quilter and visiting in Estes Park, we would love to have you join us for the evening. The Guild does ask for a $10 donation to help cover the costs incurred to bring speakers to the meeting.

The speaker this month is Joyce Franklin from Winterset, Iowa. Joyce

will share her experience as a quilter and quilt shop owner. She will present a range of quilts – from antique and traditional to modern and art quilts. A quilter for 46 years, Joyce has seen it all and fully believes quilting has something for everyone. Protégé By Ballet Renaissance

Ballet Renaissance’s new Protégé Program, modeled after BR’s long standing outreach program in southeast Michigan, kicked off last month in Loveland, thanks to the generosity of Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County (which donates space), and Group Publishing (BR’s recent Larimer County Community Service Award).

Protégé hosts a platform for particularly focused and committed students with an interest in, and commitment to, classical studies, regardless of financial circumstance. Students receive complimentary ballet classroom attire and ballet training, as well as the opportunity to participate in BR performances, in exchange for commitment to attend class regularly, dress neatly in required dress code, and work in a polite and focused manner during class time.

In Loveland, Protégé classes take place in the BGCLC Pulliam Building’s Music Room, which already had mirrors on one wall. Thanks to support from generous individuals and a grant from First Western Trust, Ballet Renaissance was able to purchase and install a sprung marley covered dance floor (important for safe and effective training) as well as portable ballet barres for the space (fall 2016). This season’s students also had the opportunity to attend a recent production of Colorado Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet, in Denver.

Of Protégé, Dr. Heidi Rothberg, Ballet Renaissance’s newest Board Member shared, “It is important and encouraging that two School of American Ballet alumni are scouting for talent in local communities and supporting these students in their quest for excellence. ” “These children are our future, ” said Ms. Mary Hammel, one of BR’s Founding Members, “ I believe Ballet Renaissance is an enduring strength in our community, and to that end, I have included BR in my estate plan-

ning. And I encourage readers to consider doing the same. ” Dr. William Kupsky, long-time BR Board Member and supporter of the BR’s Outreach program in Michigan shared, "Over its twenty year history, Ballet Renaissance has given hundreds of children the opportunity to experience the world of classical music and dance. Ballet training helps to develop discipline, strength, coordination, and grace, and Ballet Renaissance’s mission is ever more important."

This summer Protégé will work hand in hand with Ballet Renaissance’s third annual summer program for BGCLC, sponsored in part by support from the Estes Valley Community Fund; and with Ayana’s Hope, BR’s developing endowed tuition assistance fund, to which so many here in our community have given.

Ballet Renaissance, (“Dance Rebirth”), is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, committed to educating and inspiring youth and the community through the art of classical ballet. The original branch of Ballet Renaissance was founded in June of 1997 in southeast Michigan. Local Young Chautauqua Performers Bring History Alive By: Amelia Bryant, guest writer and Young Chautauquan, age 12

On March 16 & 17th and April 13 at the 7 p.m. at the Estes Valley Library, students from Estes Park ages 6-18 will be performing detailed monologues about memorable historical figures. These children have been researching and studying people such as Marie Antoinette, Bloody Mary, Helen Keller, Frida Kahlo and many more.

These young people will perform in character, as if they really are that person. They will dress as them, act as them, and tell many stories and facts about their lives.

Young Chautauqua has been a tradition in Estes Park for more than ten years! Katherine Du-

galls, Harry Houdini, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Helen Hayes and Kathryn Switzer.

Finally, on Friday, April 13, we have Joni Mitchell, Nellie Bly, Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt, Annie Oakley, Grace Kelly, Julie Andrews, Jane Austen, John Wesley Powell and Queen Victoria.

This event is open to the public and takes place at the Estes Valley Library at 7 p.m. by the Fireplace Corner. Young Chautauqua is a great learning experience for both the presenters and the audience. These kids have worked very hard on this project, and we encourage all to come.

School activities Chloe participates in are Student Council, she is a Cultural Leadership Representative with Eagle Rock School, she’s on the Prom Committee, a member of BIONIC Club and the Environmental Club.

Chloe is the Junior Class President, Student Council Vice President, BIONIC Club President, a member of National Honor Society and she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Outside of school she enjoys hik-

After high school Chloe would like to join the Peace Corps so she can travel the world helping those in need.

Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award: In addition to being awarded the Student of the Week, each winner will be given the opportunity to nominate the school program of their choice for the chance to win $500. At the end of the school year, one such nomination will be randomly selected, and that school program will be awarded the $500 Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award, in that student's name.

Auditions For “How To Eat Like A Child”

Calling all young thespians! Auditions for the Fine Arts Guild’s Youth Theater production, How to Eat Like a Child and Other Lessons in Not Being a Grownup will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 11, in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library, and at 6:30 p.m., Monday, March 12, in the Wasson Room at the library.

No previous experience is necessary to participate in Youth Theater Camp, we love having students with experience as well as those who have never been on stage before.

The production camp, for those who want to be on stage, is open to students who will have completed third grade through high school, and the technical camp, for those who want to work back stage building and painting sets and props, run the sound system and work as stage hands for the performance, is open to those who will have completed 6th grade through high school.

Camp will be held Monday through Friday, July 9-20, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with public performances Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22.

The Youth Theater Camp is a tuition based camp. Tuition for the production camp is $225 for the first child in the family with a 10% reduction for additional children in the same family. Tuition for the technical camp is $175 with the same 10% reduction for additional

children from the same family. The Bria Brown Memorial Scholarship fund is available to assist in covering the cost of camp for qualified students. Scholarship forms will be available at auditions.

Students wishing to audition for the production camp are encouraged to pick up an audition packet at the circulation desk at the Library and to bring the completed packet to auditions.

Auditions will include presentation of a monologue, either memorized or read, singing a song of the student’s choice either with CD accompaniment or acapella, and learning and performing a short choreography.

Monologues are included in the audition packet. Additional audition packets will be available at auditions for students who have not gotten one in advance.

Combined EPHS Concert Band/Village Band Concert, Wednesday, March 14

On Wednesday, March 14 at 7:00 the public is warmly invited to enjoy backto-back performances by the Estes Park High School (EPHS) Concert Band and the Estes Park Village Band in the EPHS auditorium. No charge for admission. This is an annual event that members of both bands enjoy sharing with each other, especially when they sit side-by-side, joining their musical talents in the final two numbers.

Tickets Now Available For Fine Arts Guild Presentation Of “Private Lives”

Rehearsals for the Fine Arts Guild’s production of Noel Coward’s Private Lives continue and the actors are anxious to have an audience to react to their dialogue.

Their respective spouses, Sybil Prynne and Victor Chase are played by Jessica Michak and Ben Edwards. Stephanie Soliday appears as Louise, the French maid who speaks only French, has a somewhat less than pleasant personality, and doesn’t have much patience with anyone who does not speak her native language.

The set, designed and constructed under the guidance of Director, Greig Steiner, includes light globes rescued from the Riverside Ballroom before it was demolished in 1970 and original art pieces from Mr. Steiner’s collection. All help to transform the stage into balconies along the French Riviera and a posh Paris apartment.

Performances will be at Hempel Auditorium, YMCA of the Rockies, March

Estes Park Artists Vickie Mastron And The Late John Kirsch To Be Featured At The Art Center

Dragonflies and Paduk by Vickie Mastron The Art Center of Estes Park is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, “Multi Media Medley,” March 16-April 21, 2018. This show will feature Estes Park artist Vickie Mastron as well as art by the late John Kirsch in the Sun Room.

Vickie Mastron grew up in the Los Angeles area of Southern California. Her earliest creative endeavors focused on

writing stories and poetry which she embellished with her elaborate illustrations. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in ceramics from California State University at Fullerton and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern California. While working on her master’s degree at USC, she expanded her exploration of materials and began utilizing metal and various found objects in her work and earned her MFA degree in Intermedia Sculpture. After “running away with the gypsies” and spending the summer of 1984 camping and working at the Colorado (where she met her husband) and Minnesota Renaissance fairs, Vickie moved to Boulder in January 1985. In 1991 she moved to Estes Park. She became an artist member of the Art Center in 2004, and became the Gallery Manager there in 2010. Vickie teaches the Intergenerational art classes at the Art Center, and is often invited as a guest art instructor for Explore Week at Eagle Rock School.

Vickie’s show is an eclectic collection of pieces further exploring multimedia through materials including embossed metal, fiber and jewelry. From her wall pieces that seemingly have a narrative that develops out of the sophisticated interplay of materials, to the blush on her embossed copper studies of nature, to the brilliant colors of her felted landscapes, all are the fruit of a spirit driven to explore and create.

The late John Kirsch was a long time summer resident of Estes Park. He was born in Austria just outside of Salzburg, and studied art in Vienna and Munich on Austrian government scholarships.

John fought for Austria in World War I and was one of the soldiers who participated in the historic Christmas Eve truce where the entrenched opposing soldiers played soccer, exchanged cigarettes and sang Christmas carols, only to return to battle with each other the next day. John was captured and interred in a

He built his studio in Estes Park in 1944.

His Estes “chalet” was, and still is, lovingly highlighted with traditional Austrian alpine motifs painted as a distinctive decoration on the exterior and deck railing. John loved peace, and animals,

Fitness Funded by a grant from the Larimer County Office on Aging as part of a fall prevention initiative, this eight-week Nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Balance class series will be offered at the new Estes Valley Community Center.

Nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Balance is an evidence-based program developed by the Consortium for Older Adult Wellness. This is a progressive ex-

ercise class that will help you feel better, decrease falls, and increase self-confidence and independence. Certified Nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Balance instructors Kelly Claypool and Beth Headley will lead the class.

The eightweek series will be held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., April 3 through May 24. There is no cost, however, donations to the Larimer County Office on Aging are welcome. Registration will open on Tuesday, March 20 and must be done in person at the community center. Day Trips EVRPD is excited to offer a day trip to see a special exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Degas: A Passion for Perfectionâ&#x20AC;? showcases prolific French artist Edgar Degasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; works from 1855 to 1906, including paintings, drawings, pastels, etchings, monotypes and sculptures. The

Denver Art Museum is the sole American venue for this exhibition. Participants will also be given time for lunch and exploration of the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other

Sweet Dogs Need New, Forever Homes

Cute, little Daphne and Shaggy are young chihuahua dogs who came to Estes Park from New Mexico. They are very sweet and friendly siblings which could be adopted separately but they do great together if anyone is looking for a cute pair of dogs, under five pounds each. Recycling Update By: Judi Smith

A recent bill before our Colorado State Legislature would have supported affordable housing with a .25 cent tax on plastic bag use. An interesting concept, but is it really the way to go? This law did not suggest a fee per bag, as most home rule cities and towns have considered and many have passed, but a single quarter regardless of how many bags were consumed. The proposal failed in committee on January 31st of this year.

There is a decided trend in Colorado to rid our landscapes of the flimsy plastics that blow in the wind, clutter our landscapes, and catch the antlers of our wildlife or worse yet, end up in the stomachs of dead animals (discovered in autopsy). Some municipalities are limiting the affected businesses to grocers, but an overwhelming majority are including all retail locations.

While a few communities continue to charge fees for using plastic bags, a growing number of Colorado locations are resorting to an outright ban. And many of those banning plastic are instituting fees (to the customers) for single use paper bags. Our household has a closet full of various bags from simple sacks to duffle bags and backpacks, all of which would pass the most recent (18 pound, 75 use) qualifications for “reusable.” And best of all, they could not be consumed by the elk or the bears.

Should Colorado follow the lead of Kenya, Hawaii and California?

In Estes, once we have used a single use plastic bag, we can return it (clean!) to the grocery store for recycling. Country Market accepts not only their own bags, but all standard shopping bags for carryout, from groceries to gifts. Our local Safeway takes this one step further, welcoming produce bags, bread bags, news-

paper bags, Ziploc bags, product overwrap (paper towels, water bottles, cases from Sams or Costco), and dry cleaning bags. (Remove receipts and recycle hangers at Stanley Village Cleaners.)

Please do not include such items as candy wrappers and chip bags (not really plastic) nor compostable “plastics” (nonrecyclable until we have better accessibility to industrial composting facility).

The problem would not be so far reaching if more people took it seriously. However, Coloradoans dispose of approximately two billion of these flighty bags per year and only 5% of these are recycled. This leaves 1,900,000,000 bags dotting the landscape or languishing in the landfills. In a landfill, without access to air and water, a plastic bag can take 20 years to decompose … into what? In the ocean, it has been found that the decomposed plastic remains as microscopic bits of bisphenol and other toxic chemicals. If it pollutes the oceans, does it pollute the land? And to what extent?

So, how can we reduce, reuse, and recycle this particular product? And how do we convince both locals and visitors that this is our problem and we must solve it? The League of Women Voters will be hosting our annual recycling meeting at 6 p.m. March 20th at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Come help us solve this problem and also hear about solutions proposed for the Larimer County Landfill closure in 2025.

Bill And Janice Newman Celebrate 50th Anniversary

On Saturday, March 3 Estes Park Boy Scout Units conducted a “Scouting for Food” collection at the Estes Park Safeway to benefit the Crossroads Ministry Food Bank. Through the generosity of the Estes community, the Scouts collected 2,041 pounds of food—a 26% increase over last year—and $427 in cash for the Crossroads Food Bank’s Easter distribution. The total value was almost

$4,000.

Thank you to everyone in our community who helped our neighbors by supporting the “Scouting for Food” drive.

Bill and Janice Newman formally of Estes Park celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family on February 3, 2018 at C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colorado. The Newmans were married February 3, 1968 in Madison, Connecticut. They met at the University of Vermont and were married when Bill completed a tour of duty with the U.S. Army. Their first home was in Oceanside, California where Janice completed her tour of duty as a Navy nurse. Before moving to Estes Park in 1998 they lived in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area on a farm in Delton, Michigan. They currently reside in Fort Collins just south of Wellington.

The Newmans have two married sons, Scott and Rebecca who live on a 35 acre ranch in Strasburg, Colorado, and Greg and Sarah who live in Fort Collins and have twin two year old sons, Levi and

Everett. The family enjoyed horseback riding, a sleigh ride, a morning hay wagon ride to feed the horses and fabulous gourmet meals. It was a very special time that celebrated memories of their 50 years of marriage and created new memories to cherish.

Encourages Votes For Dr. Marie Cenac For Town Trustee Dear Editor, It is my pleasure and desire to heartily endorse Dr. Marie Cenac, a candidate for the Estes Park Town Board. We have known Marie for over 20 years, and find her to be the trifecta of candidates: she is a business owner in Estes Park with employees, a mother of students in the Park R-3 school district, and the daughter of an Estes Park senior citizen. After studying Microbiology and Business Law at Louisiana State University, she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from LSU in Baton Rouge. Following graduation, Marie completed an 18 month medical/surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.

She has been an active participant in our town, from her years as a member of Noon Rotary, to volunteering as Director of the Estes Park Duck Race for two consecutive years. She supports the arts in our community, and has served four years on the board of the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies. In 2007, Marie was elected to the Park R-3 School Board and served our community for eight years, presiding as president of the school board for two years. Currently, Marie serves as a member of the Estes Valley Parks and Recreation District Board of Directors for which she was appointed to

fulfill the term of a vacated seat. Marie's term will be ending with the spring election. If this is not enough to commend her as the finest of candidates, she is also a proud member of the Rooftop Rodeo Committee and is the Chair of the Rooftop Rodeo Parade!

Teachers Don’t Need To Be Armed To The Editor: I am a retired public school teacher.

The last few years that I was in the classroom we practiced active shooter drills.

It was frightening 15 years ago and is even worse now!

Our schools must be havens for learning where students can feel safe and not have to worry about being gunned down in their own classrooms or on the playground. Military-style assault weapons are weapons of war and have no place in our communities.

We need Senators Gardner and Bennet, Congressman Jared Polis, and the rest of Congress to do something and ban assault weapons now!

Teachers don’t need to be armed! We were trained to teach children not be security guards!

March 15, 1957 – February 15, 2018 Rebecca (“Becca”) Sabo joined her friends in spirit on February 15, 2018.

Becca began her life journey in Lockport, New York, where she acknowledged her spiritual quest at a very young age and began her magical life tour.

In 1980, Becca moved to Colorado, had her son, Joshua, and embarked on life in the mountains. She had a full range of experiences, including studying astrology, Kundalini yoga, herbal medicine and the Builders of the Adytum, as well as being a business owner. These experiences brought Becca to a unique understanding of a life lived fully, that she was always willing to share with all who were willing to listen.

Her home was a place of refuge and joy for her, and she welcomed all with good old-fashioned, home-cooked meals – her meatloaf and chicken soup were particularly amazing. Good con-
