Trail Ridge Road Opens For The Season

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is open for the season.

Due to melting snow on the road visitors should be prepared for icy conditions.

Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store are anticipated to open on Friday.

At this time, night time closures will not be implemented. Because weather conditions may change rapidly, park visitors should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly and are encouraged to call the park’s Trail Ridge Road recorded phone line at (970) 586-1222. Park staff will update the recorded line during and after regular office hours, when the road status changes.

Trail Ridge Road historically opens on Memorial Day weekend; last year the road opened on May 31, due to a late May snowstorm. The earliest the road has opened was on May 7, 2002; the latest June 26, 1943. Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States, climbs to 12,183 feet and connects the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Trail Ridge Road officially closed for the season last year on October 27.

National Park Service plow operators normally begin clearing the snow in the middle of April. Crews from the west side of the park and crews from the east

side of the park move along the road and eventually meet at the Alpine Visitor Center. The visitor center is the highest in the National Park Service, sitting at 11,796 feet above sea level. This year, crews ran into average or below average snowpack in many locations. Drifts were similar as past years, ranging from 10 to 20 feet in some locations. Rain and sun caused significant melting over the last two weeks. Recent storms that forecast snow accumulation at higher elevations, produced rain instead.

Plan Ahead For A More Enjoyable Visit To Rocky Mountain National Park In 2017, Rocky Mountain National Park was the fourth most visited national park with over 4.4 million visitors. This visitation represents a nearly 40 percent increase since 2012. Over the last 100 years, the reasons people visit are the same; to experience nature, to seek solitude, to enjoy scenic grandeur, to watch wildlife, and to partake in outstanding recreational activities.

Popularity and high visitation during the summer and fall, particularly during 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. can mean full parking lots, congested roads, busy trails, and long lines and wait times at entrance stations. Park managers continue to address what effect this level of visitation is having on visitor and staff safety, resource protection, visitor experiences and operational capacity.

Last year during the summer and early fall, park staff restricted vehicle access in three specific areas, the Bear Lake Road corridor, the Wild Basin area, and Alpine Visitor Center when parking areas filled and heavy congestion warranted. These restrictions occurred most days in July and August, in addition to weekends in June and September. Park staff will continue to implement these short term efforts in 2018.

Plan ahead for a more enjoyable visit to Rocky!

• Hike early or hike late.

• Check the weather forecast before you arrive at the park to better plan your day and destinations. If you plan to hike later in the day, it is critical that you know the weather forecast for the elevation of your destination.

• Carpool • Take advantage of the park shuttle: https://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/shuttle_bus_route.htm • Trailhead parking lots fill early in the day: § Glacier Gorge Trailhead by 6:00 a. m.

§ Bear Lake Trailhead by 8:30 a. m. § Park and Ride by 10:00 a. m. § Wild Basin Corridor by 9:30 a. m.

• If you want to hike in the Bear Lake Road corridor and plan to arrive after 10, your best option, and on some days your only option, will be to take the Hiker Shuttle from the Estes Park Visitor Center. This shuttle runs every 30 minutes from the Estes Park Visitor Center to the Park & Ride on Bear Lake Road. Expect wait times to board the shuttles. An entrance pass is required to use The Hiker Shuttle.

Please see below for how to purchase a pass online. The Hiker Shuttle will not be stopping at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center this summer, due to Kris Hazelton congestion and limited parking.

• The Alpine Visitor Center parking lot is busy between 10 a. m. to 3 p. m.

• More than eighty percent of park visitors arrive through the east entrances of the park • Camping is popular in the park. Reserve a campsite up to six months before your visit. The two first-come, firstserved campgrounds fill up quickly.

Timber Creek Campground, located on the west side of the park, fills up last.

• In September, visitation is 50 percent higher on weekends than weekdays • Purchase a daily or weekly entrance pass online at go.nps.gov/rockyfees your email confirmation will serve as your pass and should save transaction time once you reach the park entrance station kiosk.

The remaining fee free days for 2018, are September 22 and November 11.

2018 Collector Holiday Ornament Available For Purchase Since 1986, the Town of Estes Park employees' Helping Hands Committee has created commemorative annual holiday ornaments for purchase by the public.

The proceeds from ornament sales are used to provide high school senior

scholarships and assistance to local families in need. The 2018 ornament features a photo of a sunrise over Twin Sisters mountain by photographer Boris Lucky. The 2018 ornament may be viewed at www.estes.org/helpinghandsornament.

Ornaments are available for $12 each at Estes Park Town Hall at 170 MacGregor Avenue, the Estes Park Visitor Center at 500 Big Thompson Avenue, and Peaks Hallmark in Upper Stanley Village. A

limited number of ornaments from previous years are also available at Town Hall.

Ornaments may also be ordered by mailing your request and payment (no cash) to the Town of Estes Park Helping Hands Committee at P.O. Box 1200, Estes Park, CO 80517. Please calculate your order total to include shipping costs. Shipping for one ornament is $6.00, shipping for two ornaments is $6.50, shipping for three ornaments is $12.50, and shipping for four ornaments is $13. Primary Election Just Around The Corner June 26th is Colorado’s Primary Election, however the first day ballots may be mailed to voters is June 4.

The Primary will include candidates for National, State, and County positions such as US House of Representatives, Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Senator and State Representative, and County Commissioner.

New this year, unaffiliated voters are eligible to vote in the Colorado Primary.

Unaffiliated voters had the option to choose a party by May 8th. Otherwise, the unaffiliated voter will be sent two ballots, Republican and Democratic. An unaffiliated voter may cast a ballot for only one political party. If an unaffiliated voter returns a ballot with more than one major political party, the ballot will be rejected and none of the votes will be counted.

Take time to learn about the candidates and their positions on issues that are important to you prior to the election. To provide the community the opportunity

to learn about the candidates vying for the 2nd Congressional District Primary, the League of Women Voters of Estes Park has invited the 2nd Congressional District Democratic and Republican Primary Candidates and, while not on the Primary ballot, the Independent and Libertarian candidates to an event we are calling “Candi-dating with the 2nd Congressional District Candidates.”

Candidates will spend time with a small group of citizens, answering their questions and then will move to another group of citizens until all citizens have the opportunity to spend time with each of the candidates.

School Athletics Fundraiser Scam Police and Business in Partnership Alert The Estes Park Police Department is alerting residents and businesses to a current telephone scam in which solicitors claim to represent the Estes Park R3 School District. The scammers solicit money, claiming to provide advertising space in a program or calendar as a fundraiser for the Estes Park School District athletic teams. The school district

Moraine Avenue Is Open!

We are pleased to announce that the Moraine Avenue Bridge replacement project is wrapping up and Moraine Avenue has reopened on schedule! The pedestrian route/crosswalk is also restored. We extend sincere appreciation to the Town staff and consultants/con-

Parking Enforcement Began Memorial Day The Estes Park Police Department began enforcing parking compliance in public parking areas beginning Memorial Day Monday, May 28. Public parking areas with threehour and 30-minute time allowances will now be enforced. Motorists are encouraged to refer to parking lot signage for site-specific information.

on duty downtown and can provide general information and directions to parking areas. Permits are available for extended parking privileges for qualifying residents who live in the downtown area.

Local Group Flinches Forward With New Veteran And First Responder Nonprofit And Announces Its First Community Get Together Flinch Forward is an organization for Military Veterans and First Responders who are ready, willing and able to flinch forward in times of need. Board Member David LaSalle says that Flinch Forward was born from the belief that men and women of purpose, must give back.

“We have no choice. We were forged in the warrior values of purpose and mission and that purpose and mission is who we are, not what we do.”

The organization was started by local residents Adam Shake, David LaSalle and Jeff Johansson who realized that when their tours of duty ended, their missions didn’t. Johansson says “Every warrior has a next mission. We know that the transition to civilian life is a journey. And for every warrior, family member, and caregiver, that journey looks different,” Johansson continued “We are here for their first step, and each step that follows. Because we believe that every warrior should have a positive future to look forward to.

There’s always another goal to achieve, another mission to discover and another way to Flinch Forward. We are their partner in that mission.”

Speaking about Flinch Forward’s organizational model, Adam Shake said “We are not a vacation model nonprofit. We are dedicated to providing an ongoing mission to warriors, a way of life that reflects our core beliefs in service, camaraderie and unrelenting personal growth.” Shake continued “This is why Flinch Forward is unique - members give back to their communities while forging a lifelong support network. Supporters of Flinch Forward support those who support them.”

Before even getting its 501c3 designation, the organization has already garnered interest from other Veteran and First Responder nonprofits from Col-

orado Springs to Cheyenne and looks forward to offering services to include transitioning into a civilian workforce, post traumatic success development, paths to leadership and mission forward opportunities like working with area nonprofits, search and rescue training and team building opportunities.

Flinch Forward’s Founding Board of Directors include: • Jeff Johannson, a Vietnam Veteran with an M.A. in Behavioral Science that uses a Warrior Model to assist veterans in moving them from Post Traumatic Stress into Post Traumatic Growth.

Recently, on a perfectly clear and calm day, I led two families up Lily Mountain. There were three adults and three kids ages 11 and younger—all flatlanders—who huffed and puffed up the trail. It was a struggle for these hikers, but they forgot the pain when they made it to the top and could look out over the valley, pick out where they were staying, and see more clearly the beaver climbing up Longs Peak. (I’ve been watching that poor beaver for years and he still hasn’t made it to the top!)

It was gratifying to be able to get a group of mostly first-timers up a peak they didn’t think they could summit, where they were grateful they didn’t quit back there when they wanted to, and they got to experience an authentic Rocky Mountain high. Colorado.

As we hiked across a five-year-old landslide, we talked about the Flood of 2013. After we had to get out of the way of a dog off-leash, we talked about the difference between national parks and national forests. (Dogs are not allowed on the trails in national parks and they are allowed in national forests but only if on a leash. That means everybody’s dog, not everybody else’s dog). And when the trail got steeper, we didn’t talk.

Except the 11-year-old boy. He entertained his newfound friend all the way up the mountain with a meandering, outlandish story. I started to tune in halfway through his story line. He was telling her about a tree that grew bacon, and the crispiest bacon was at the very top with the rest of the most delicious food. And then he talked about an expired-milk tree, and you had to be careful about the milk you drank from this tree. I was wishing I’d gotten in on this young man’s story earlier, and couldn’t wait until we got to the top so I could write down the inventive tale I was hearing.

As we ate our lunch on the summit, I praised the lad for his creativity and asked him to repeat the part about the crispiest bacon being at the top of the bacon tree.

“Oh, ” he said matter-of-factly. “I was describing a video game.”

My Lily Mountain balloon popped and dropped between the cracks of the rocks. Really, I thought? I wasn’t hiking with the next J. K. Rowling but with an 11-year-old video gamer instead? Joy

stick, boy shtick.

Looking back, I wish I’d asked him more about the game. But that Atari/Nintendo//PlayStation/Wii world is so foreign to me, it just didn’t register at the time. However, on the way back down I asked his shy little brother what his favorite video game was and he told me straight away, and began explaining all about it—the characters, the setting and what different colored weapons do, which is where he lost me. I’m not a fan of weapons of any sort. Yet I realized I had a guaranteed conversation started for the entire summer: just ask a kid what his/her favorite video game is.

They all have one. (Ask me to name one, and I might come up with “wacka-wacka-wacka-wacka,” which is my way of saying Pac-Man.) I’m completely out of the video game loop. When I did a search to find out more about the Bacon Tree and the Expired Milk Tree, the search didn’t result in much. Obviously I don’t know the correct video game terminology to get around in that 8bit-integer-SEGAconsole-MegaMan-WarCraft universe.

Who’s Zelda, anyway?

In my search, however, I did find a site that offered 15 Interesting Facts about Video Games. They include: • Pac-Man was invented by a guy who looked down at his pizza after he removed the first slice.

• Two-thirds of American households play video games.

• In 1983 a lot of newborns were named Mario after the Mario Brothers game. Honest.

• For the older folks: in the original arcade version of Donkey Kong, Mario was a carpenter, not a plumber.

• You might find it interesting that the most famous G code for video games is up-up-down-down-left-rightleft-right-B-A, but I don’t find it the least bit interesting because I have no idea what a G code is.

Village Thrift Shop Awards Over $180,000 In Grants The Village Thrift Shop announced that over $180,000 has been given in grants and aid this year to nonprofit organizations that serve the Estes Valley. These funds will help 51 different programs.

This was the second year of operation for the Shop. After the first year, $93,000 was awarded to 39 organizations, so there has been a significant jump in only one year.

Big Thompson Canyon Association Pancake Breakfast Sunday, June 3 Big Thompson Canyon Association Pancake Breakfast; Sunday, June 3, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Big Thompson Canyon Association (BTCA) has been supporting the canyon community for over 80 years.

Managing tourism impacts including fishery restocking and sanitation, creating usable residential directories and address system and providing support during disasters are some of the projects undertaken over the years.

Now in its 50th year, the Big Thompson Canyon Association (BTCA) Pancake Breakfast has become a tradition for many families. A Sunday trip up the Big Thompson Canyon and breakfast in the historic log building spells an enjoyable and inexpensive family outing. Advance tickets are only $7 for adults and $5 for children 4 to 9 years of age; tickets are $1 more at the door. Little ones under 4 eat for free. The BTCA building is located about 1 mile east of Drake on US 34.

There are more activities than just the all you can eat breakfast. BTCA members host a bake sale; proceeds from the pancake breakfast and bake sale fund the BTCA during the year. The BTCA maintains the building and provides a central gathering place for the local community year-round.

The Big Thompson Canyon Volunteer Fire Department (BTCVFD) hosts a craft show next door at the firehouse.

Participants are local crafters whose table fees assist the fire department with various needs. The fire department also assists with traffic and cooking.

There is a charity “bucket” raffle, this year benefitting the Big Thompson Watershed Coalition. This group has been very active in restoring the ecology of the Big Thompson River corridor: details of their work can be found at http://www.bigthompson.co/ . Prizes include merchandise and gift certificates from many area businesses.

US 34 is open! The road reopened to all traffic May 24, come see the canyon without the holiday crowds!

Art Center To Participate In “Fiber Affair” Two Fabulous Fiber Shows The Art Center of Estes Park is very pleased to announce its participation in the 2018 “Fiber Affair” activities with its upcoming show “Fiber Explorations” and “FACE of Fiber in the Rockies 2018”, June 8-July 14. Please join us for the opening reception for both of these shows Friday, June 8, 5:00-8:00 p.m.

This reception is free and open to the public.

“Fiber Explorations” will feature the fiber art of Art Center artist member Deb Coombs, and is sponsored

by Chris Switzer. Deb Coombs has been a fiber artist for 40 years and her passion is for weaving and color. She produces oneof-a-kind handwoven, handpainted, handdyed garments and accessories from natural fibers. Her primary emphasis is on color and simple weave structures that allow garments to flow and drape. In the last several years Deb’s love of dyeing has focused on the “woven shibori” technique (a variation on ancient Japanese dyeing) as well as more traditional shibori (pole-wrapped) for silks.

“FACE of Fiber in the Rockies 2018” will also be featured in this show. This juried-invitational show presents the fiber art of 25 fiber artists from Colorado and across the country. These participating artists were nominated by other fiber artists for their excellent quality and creative approach to textile art. Some of the artists are new to the fiber world while others have

worked many years refining their skills.

We will also present a group of woven works by the Mountain Valley Weavers from Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The FACE sponsors for this part of the show include Cottage Bliss, Presser Foot, Estes Area Weavers, Rebecca Gilberto, Shuttles, Spindles and Skeins, Chris Switzer, The Felting Sources, State Farm, and the Art Center of Estes Park.

Visiting the gallery you will also enjoy art in a variety of media made by the remaining Art Center artist members. The Art Center of Estes Park is a nonprofit organization which provides a facility to support the work of local and regional artists, striving to promote exhibition, education, and excellence in the visual arts.

Proceeds benefit the artist and contribute to the Art Center’s education and community outreach.

The Fourth of July in Estes Park will once again serve as the dazzling backdrop to shiny chrome, tail fins, polished fenders, and Americana-themed nostalgia. The 20th Annual Coolest Car Show takes place on Wednesday, July 4th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Estes Park Event Center, located at Stanley Fairgrounds.

Admission to the Coolest Car Show is only $8 for adults, or $5 for young people ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and under attend free. Tickets will be on sale that day inside the lobby.

Spanning both the Event Center and next-door Pavilion, the Coolest Car Show features rows and rows of classic and vintage vehicles—everything from Ford Model Ts to today’s state-of-the-art electrics. There will be local car owners from Estes Park and many more from throughout Colorado, as many from out-of-state.

The Mountain Town Trio, a popular

Estes Park band specializing in folk and classic rock music, will be performing that day beginning at 11 am. The trio features guitarist and vocalist James Moellers, vocalist Kim Smith, and bass and mandolin player Kevin Dennis.

In addition, the folk and country sounds of the Mountain Music Makers will also be a part of the event from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

The Coolest Car Show is familyfriendly festival, with special activities for kids and a photo booth. Food will be available for purchase, and a beer truck will be on site.

In addition to the parking available at the Events Center, Estes Park Trolleys will transport show-goers from the Municipal Building downtown to the Event Center at the Fairgrounds and back.

The Coolest Car Show is a fundraiser sponsored by the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Estes Park Museum through fundraising, publications, outreach, volunteerism, special projects and events.

how and why her support group got started. If there is interest, we will discuss forming a similar group here in Estes Park.

Support groups are valuable in that they can help build connections with people in similar situations, provide encouragement and social interaction, and connect families to important resources.

Estes Park Village Band Presents First Summer Concert At Good Samaritan Village

The Estes Park Village Band will be celebrating Flag Day early at the first outdoor concert of its summer season on Thursday, June 7. The free concert will begin at 6:00 p.m., (please note the earlier start for this concert) in the parking lot of the Good Samaritan Village in Estes Park. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved into the dining hall. The band is celebrating its 36th year of performing for the Estes Park community and its visitors.

Sharing the conducting duties for the concert will be Loren Johnson, Jeff Klintberg and Chuck Varilek.

Varilek will begin the concert with Estes Park summer resident Terry Rustin’s arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner, ” followed by “God Bless America, ” featuring Estes Park vocalist Scott Anderson. Varilek will continue with “The Billboard March” by John Klohr.

Johnson will next direct the band, beginning with “Bright Lights On Broadway, ” featuring well-known songs including “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “Comedy Tonight.” Anderson will again be featured as vocal soloist on “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’” from “Porgy And Bess. ” Meredith Willson’s “Seventy Six Trombones” is next on the program followed by Leroy Anderson’s “Blue Tango.”

Klintberg will take the podium to lead the Village Band in a medley of patriotic music, “American Civil War Fantasy” by Jerry Bilik. “Valdres,” a Norwegian

march by Johannes Hanssen, will be presented next, followed by “Midway March” by John Williams.

Varilek will once again direct the band, beginning with a Karl King march, “Broadway One-Step” “George M. Cohan Patriotic Fantasy,” a medley of Cohan songs including “You’re A Grand Old Flag” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” is next on the program. The concert will finish with John Philip Sousa’s march, “The Invincible Eagle.”

Estes Park Good Samaritan Village is a retirement community providing housing and services to senior adults. The Village is located approximately one mile north of Hwy. 34 on the west side of Devils Gulch Road on Ptarmigan Trail. The band members would like to thank Carey Stevanus of Good Samaritan Village for her support in coordinating this annual event.

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the outdoor concert. American flags will be given to the audience members before the concert.

The Estes Park Village Band is a community band made up of musicians from the Estes Park area as well as from surrounding communities. New members are always welcome to perform with the band. Estes Valley Model Railroaders June 6 Meeting The Estes Valley Model Railroaders Wednesday, June 6 meeting will be at 6:30 in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library. After a short business meeting, the evening’s program will be Rich Bray’s presentation “The Construction of the Moffat Road.”

The Denver Northwestern and Pacific Railroad was built by David Moffat, then the richest man in Colorado. He made the decision to build in 1902. As a banker he knew about the high grade coal fields NW of Denver and had long

The First United Methodist Chancel Choir of Lubbock, TX will present the first of four concerts on its tour of the front range area at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, Saturday, June 9, at 7 p.m. The forty or so choir members will offer a widely varied one hour program sampling centuries of American Protestant and English choral traditions. From the music of British composer John Rutter to American spirituals, and from timeless European classics to innovative contemporary works, the concert is sure to engage and delight every musical interest.

Manning the impressive Schantz-Akers organ at PCCR for accompaniment and solo work, David Warren is the current Guest Artist in a program that has, for thirty years, brought organ and choral scholars to Lubbock from schools in Cambridge, Oxford, Wales, and Norway.

These gifted young people serve as organist and assistant music director at FUMC, while earning advanced degrees at Texas Tech University.

The current FUMC choir director is Dr. Seung-Won Cho, a native of South Korea. Dr. Cho came to the U.S. for graduate studies, and has earned a Masters from the University of Texas, and a DMA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as organist and choral director for churches and other groups in Austin, Urbana, and

Roanoke, VA before coming to Lubbock.

The choir will spend the day Saturday sightseeing Estes and the National Park before their 7 p.m. concert. Sunday will take them to Denver for worship at Trinity United Methodist Church and to perform at The Cathedral Basilica of The Immaculate Conception. The final two concerts are Monday at the Air Force Academy Chapel and at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs.

For over four decades, the Lubbock choir has toured near and far to share their music and experience cultures, people, and places of worship besides their own. They have sung at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, and numerous cathedrals in Great Britain and New Zealand. Some of their U.S. concerts were performed at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, the Crystal Cathedral, and the Washington National Cathedral.

The First United Methodist Chancel Choir of Lubbock invites all in the community to enjoy an evening of inspiring choral music. The concert is at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave, on Saturday, the 9th of June, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

June 5 Meeting For Democrats In Estes Valley

The Estes Valley branch of the Larimer County Democrats will meet on Tuesday, June 5, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library.

This is an important meeting scheduled just as ballots for the June 26 Primary are being mailed to Estes Valley voters! Ballots to all registered voters will be mailed from June 4 through 8, and must be received by the Larimer County Clerk no later than 7 p.m. on June 26. So it is time to know what will be included in your ballot and gain information on the candidates. We will provide summary information regarding voting and Democratic candidates at this June 5 meeting.

The 2018 Colorado Primary is the first time that Unaffiliated voters will be able to participate in Primary voting due to the passage of the 2016 ballot issues regarding Colorado Primary Elections. This makes it more important than ever for voters to support their candidates and to vote for all positions on their ballot.

The agenda for our June 5 meeting includes discussion of the June 26 Pri-

mary Election, with specific information about the new voting requirements and general voter information about dates and locations for voter assistance. Our handouts explain voting by persons affiliated with political parties and those who have chosen to be unaffiliated. We also have handouts with information about our candidates, including links to their websites.

Precinct Committee Persons, County and State delegates, plus volunteers should plan to attend, plus other Democrats and Unaffiliated voters interested in working with the Democrats in the 2018 elections, as well as persons who want to know more about Primary voting rules and candidates. Persons who have not yet registered to vote or who need to update their registration may also gather helpful information at this meeting about what they can do to vote in this Primary.

THE WORD FOR MEMORIAL DAY 2018 IS ‘SO APPROPRIATE’ Long ago, the wise Solomon wrote: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the sun: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3) As we observed the wonderful activities of this past Memorial Day I thought about how appropriate that scripture was to things that were done to call attention to the great sacrifices that have been made by so many for our nation and for each of us. One of my favorite events of the year is the Bolder Boulder. In years gone by, before my ‘get up and go, largely got up and went’, I enjoyed getting in shape and walking and jogging that race. Now I have to be content to watch the race and the accompanying activities on television, but the thrill and blessing is no less there.

The Bolder Boulder race itself always has a good blend of laughing, dancing, and embracing that adds to the joy of the day. However, also during the citizens’ race, there are many very thought-provoking, very sobering things witnessed. Most touching are the thousands of names on runners’ aprons that honor family members or other military persons that have served…many died…in order for us to have our freedom. Each reminds us of the individual’s sacrifice, but also the pain and sorrow experienced by family and other loved ones.

During the course of the race each runner receives all kind of encouragement from those on the sidelines along the 10K route as they are cheered on in their endeavor. However, as each enters the stadium they are almost overwhelmed by the applause and encouraging words as they race toward the finish line. What a wonderful show of unity and solidarity is experienced by all present! It always reminds me of the scripture in the Bible that says, “Wherefore, seeing we are surrounded by such a cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,” especially since we know that most of those in the stands have just run and already finished the race successfully. What encouragement that moment always provides to a tired, but determined runner!

Once your race is finished and you settle down for the well planned ‘honoring’ activities, that’s when some most powerful things begin to happen. The patriotic music, some presented by very elderly…yet musically-talented…military heroes, the gun salute, the presentation of the story of our ‘Mountain troops’ who trained at Camp Hale, the introduction of several men and women that served with valor during various wars, all were very moving. Mike Nelson did a great job and I so appreciated some moments when he had to struggle to hold back some tears…because I did too. The ‘flyover’ from the Air National Guard, the skydivers…each representing a branch of the military…all added so much to a very special day.

What a breath of fresh air all this was in a day when there is so much bickering and blaming and negativism showing a lack of unity in our nation, it was a joy to sense the unity and mutual respect and honoring of so many great Americans. I trust that they will never feel like their sacrifices have been in vain. They weren’t! God bless America!

Rocky Mountain National Park Celebrates International Migratory Bird Day June 9

The Year of the Bird is the theme for this year’s International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), to celebrate 100 years of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. On Saturday, June 9, park staff will offer two great events.

In the morning, go on a bird walk in Rocky Mountain National Park! Join us for an opportunity to learn more about migratory birds while exploring the park with experienced bird watchers. The event will begin at 8 a.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. After a short introduction, visitors and bird walk leaders will caravan into the park to view

birds in a variety of habitats. The activity is free of charge, but park entrance fees will apply. This guided walk will have naturalists and expert birders to help beginners identify birds; all ages and abilities are welcome. Bring warm clothes, water, good walking shoes, binoculars and a snack. The event will end at noon, but visitors are encouraged to continue their birding adventures throughout the day.

The second event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center with a special showing of the awardwinning film, “Winged Migration.”

Learn about the world’s migratory birds and their truly miraculous journeys in this breathtaking film covering 40 countries and seven continents. Running time is 1.5 hours; admission is free.

Pet Association Yard Sale To Benefit The Pets!

It’s time to get ready for the annual Pet Association Yard Sale! Donations are now being accepted for this year’s sale to be held on Saturday, June 23 at the Animal Medical Center of Estes Park from 7:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

We are now accepting items in good condition. Items may be dropped off at the Animal Medical Center at 1260 Manford Ave, Monday-Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Donations of large furniture, fixtures, appliances, clothing, computers, or TVs will not be

accepted. If you have questions about donations, please call 970-586-6898.

Each Saturday morning from 9:00 until 12:00 noon, beginning June 2 until October 27 the 970 Noels Draw Lane outdoor shooting range will be open to the public. We welcome members of our community, the front range, and out of state visitors to the pistol, rifle, archery and trap ranges.

Members of the Gun Club and the public are expected to bring their own paper targets, firearms, and ammunition as well as eye and hearing protection and drinking water.

Loaner eye and ear protection is available as well as drinking water for $1.00 per bottle.

Range Safety Officers (RSOs) will be on hand to aid in the safety of handling firearms and to go over range commands and protocol.

Members of the public and or guests will be required to sign a release of liability form whether they are a spectator or a shooter. The fee for the public to use

the range will be $5.00 per person and there will be an established sign-in table.

The Trap Range will operate only when weather permits as high winds make it unsafe to operate the trap barrier curtains. The fee for trap is $8.00 per round.

Directions to the range can be found on the Club’s website www.epgunarchery.com.The range is located about 51/2 miles east of Estes Park at mile marker 68.5 on Highway 34, look for signs near the range road and bridge.

There is a restroom on site but no running water, shade is very limited and there is plenty of parking available.

All shooters are expected to know and abide by NRA safe rules of handling firearms and if unsure of these rules, an RSO will be glad to go over them with you. We look forward to a safe and enjoyable summer season at the Outdoor Range at Common Point.

Elk Calves Appearing In The Estes Valley-Caution Urged Around Protective Mama Elk

By: Kris Hazelton It’s here, elk calving season in the Estes Valley. With the new baby elk calves and the proximity of the elk population to the Estes Valley residents and visitors, everyone is urged to be on alert and know that the mothers are not being aggressive when defending their young, just protective. It’s our responsibility to not get too close to the baby or the mother during calving season.

In the event that you encounter a protective mother elk anywhere in the Estes Valley, here are some helpful tips.

Be aware. The best thing to do at this time of year is to be very aware of your surroundings. The cows have calves all over town and you just never know when you’re going to happen to walk by a mother and calf.

Back away. If you encounter a protective mother, the best thing to do is to back away quickly. Don’t turn your back on her, as you won’t know if she is charging you. Make yourself look large. If you have a jacket, raise it above your head, and swing it around, make yourself look formidable. Chances are the mother will be glad you’re leaving their space. However, if she continues to pursue you, get some-

thing between you and the mother elk, a fence, a tree, a vehicle, something to protect yourself until she hopefully backs away and goes back to her calf.

Protect your head. If she is an especially protective mother and charges you to the point of knocking you down, curl up in the fetal position and protect your head and neck with your arms and hands.

She’ll most likely give you a couple of thumps with her legs and then leave you alone, not seeing you as a potential threat anymore.

Advice for dog owners. If you happen to be walking or jogging with a dog, the elk will be even more on alert and aggressive towards your dog. She will see your pet as a real threat, a predator, to her baby. The best thing to do in this case is turn around and go the other way. If you can’t do that, let your dog go for the time, and save yourself.

The elk will most likely chase off your dog and you can retrieve the dog a bit further down the trail.

Change your route. If the elk are on the trail you frequent, there are miles of other trails, less used by the elk and it is sug-

gested you alter your route for a few weeks to avoid potential problems.

Although the elk are used to seeing people, the elk are very much still wild animals. Adult elk, both male and female, are very large and can be dangerous, particularly if they think a person is threatening their territory or offspring.

Another important note, if you find a baby elk or mule deer, please never, ever go near or touch it. Even though it could appear that its mother is absent, elk calves are seldom orphaned, and its mother is probably feeding only a short distance away.

She’ll make herself known very quickly

when you get too close!

If you come across a protective female elk, and she is endangering people in a public area, the best thing to do is move away and call the Estes Park Police Department Dispatch Center at 586-4000. They will notify the proper authorities and will temporarily close off the area until the mother moves on with her calf.

Educating ourselves and our visitors about wildlife issues is the right thing to do, especially around calving time and during the fall rut. Remember, there’s a reason it’s called wildlife.

Motorcycle Adventure On The Silk Road

“Our Wonderful World” begins its 12th season of armchair travel-adventures this Monday, June 4, with a presentation titled “Motorcycle Adventure on the Silk Road.” Sponsored by the Estes Valley Library, the presentation takes place at 7 p.m. at this year’s new location: the American Legion Post 119 at 850 N. St. Vrain Avenue.

that spanned from Ireland to Mongolia through the Balkans, Asia Minor, Central Asia and Russia.

Sampson, a retired lawyer and world traveler, has enjoyed motorcycle adventures that have taken him across continents, from Europe to Asia and from North to South America. By foot, he and his wife Mary have hiked the Camino de Santiago from St. John Pied de Port, France, and from Proto in Portugal. Pinewood Springs Resident Graduates From U.S. Coast Guard Academy

Abigail Grace Mann has graduated from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in government, commissioned as an ensign into the United States Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Academy offers a four-year educational program designed to provide cadets the knowledge and experience essential to become leaders of character. Cadets are required to devote themselves to an honor concept and af-

This summer’s theme is designed to get us all tapping a happy tune: “Libraries Rock! ” That’s right, music is our inspiration, intertwined with reading and literacy all season long.

“Gatherings” invites you to pick up a reading log. There’s one customized for all ages: adults, teens, children, even for babies in arms (listening to stories counts too!). There are great prizes all

along the way: adults who complete all “reading challenges” will be entered in a drawing for tickets to a premiere Town event. Choose among Jazz Fest, Whiskey Warm-Up, and the Wine & Chocolate Festival, just to name a few.

EVRPD To T Offer Off f er Copper ff Embossing Workshop Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in the Estes Valley, is excited to offer a metal embossing workshop at the new Estes Valley Community Center.

The class will take place on Thursday, June 14 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 and most materials are included.

In this half-day beginner metal embossing class, students will learn to use a variety of basic tools to emboss a copper feather bookmark, measuring approximately 3 x 4 inches. The copper feather will be mounted on a bookmark made of unique hand painted paste papers. Most tools and supplies will be provided by the instructor. A short supply list will be

emailed to registered students prior to class.

The class will be taught by Libby Rehm, an Estes Park local whose formal education includes a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Colorado State University. Libby has taught metal embossing and bookmaking classes with the Colorado Calligrapher’s Guild and Trinidad State Junior College, as well as private classes. In addition to her expertise in metal embossing, Libby is a juried photographer and mixed media artist. Financial Focus: What Should You Look For In An Annual Financial Review?

Given the complexities of the investment world, you might consider working with a financial professional to help you move toward your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You’ll want to establish good communication with whomever you choose, and you should meet in person at least once a year to discuss your situation. At these annual reviews, you’ll want to cover a variety of topics, including these: • Your portfolio’s progress – Obviously, you will want to discuss how well your investments are doing. Of course, you can follow their performance from month to month, or even day to day, by reviewing your investment statements and online information, but at your annual meeting, your financial professional can sum up the past year’s results, highlight areas that have done well or lagged, and show you how closely your portfolio is tracking the results you need to achieve your long-term goals.

• Your investment mix – Your mix of investments – stocks, bonds, government securities and so on – helps determine your success as an investor. But in looking at the various investments in your portfolio, you’ll want to go beyond individual gains and losses to see if your overall mix is still appropriate for your needs. For example, is the ratio of stocks to bonds still suitable for your risk tolerance? Over time, and sometimes without you taking any action, this ratio can shift, as often happens when stocks appreciate so much that they now take up a larger percentage of your portfolio than you intended – with a correspondingly higher risk level. 2018 School District Awards

Teacher of the Year: Sheridan Monroe

Sheridan Monroe is the current Estes Park Band Director and has led the EPHS marching bands to state for three years in a row. Sheridan has contributed innumerable hours to working with our children. She has taught them dedication, perseverance, art, discipline, beauty, movement and music. She holds the students to high standards, but has such great relationships with them so that they are willing to put in the time and effort to meet these expectations.

She has created a sense of family in the band and the relationships she has built will last forever. She has also rounded up the support of countless parents and community members to help her program through many fundraising jobs, moving people and parts, and other various band needs. Sadly, Sheridan is making a career change to further her education and pursue other endeavors next year. In such a short amount of time, Sheridan has built such an amazing band program in her four years as band director- one that is the pride of out Estes Park community, young and old!

Classified Employee of the Year: Nick Gooch

Nick is a Computer Information Services Manager at the Estes Park School District and works with all three schools as well as the administration, helping both staff and students with technology and innovation. He does a large amount of work with the Apple iPad program

and worked recently to help train a group of Apple Teachers for the district.

He often goes above and beyond his scope of duties and seeks out ways to improve our student success, being an innovator himself. He gets excited to implement new innovation in our schools to bring the district up to speed with neighboring districts doing the same. Nick also volunteers his time with the Robotics Club in the Elementary school, as well as in many classrooms with innovation projects. He enjoys working with the staff and kids in this capacity and the staff and students also appreciate him. He is always readily available and has a positive attitude when met with any task. He does a lot of work behind the scenes that people do not realize is going on that keeps the school district technology running smoothly.

Louise Johnson is a retired community member and volunteer for the Estes Park Middle School. Louise really wants to see every student thrive, and every minute of the day she is helping them to learn. She volunteers in the sixth grade language arts room every single school day and helps in THREE periods! She is there by 7:30 to help set up the classroom, putting chairs at every desk, and wiping each desk with antiseptic wipes to be sure the students don’t spread illnesses. She always works one on one (and sometimes 2-3 on one), helping students be successful in absolutely anything they need. She truly loves them and works hard to learn about those she works with in a personal way. She is truly a treasure at the middle school, giving 4-5 hours every school day!

Frank J. Normali, 84, formerly of Estes Park, beloved husband of Marilyn Spillner; loving father of Deborah (Alex) Gibson, Dawn Normali, Scott (Linda) Normali, and Dianne (Paul) Michener; dear grandfather of Michelle (Tim) Hastie, Nisa (Constance) Michener, Kera (Jim) Connour, Lauren (Viki) Michener, Robert Normali, Iliana Normali-Kraft, Michael Michener, and Marrianna Lamont, and great-grandfather of Korrina and Jorin Connour, Alexis Hastie and Bryan Michener; son of the late Frank Normali, Sr. and Elsie and Ray Nickoson; cherished brother of Nancy Rae; uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his former wife and mother to his four children Joan (Herbert) Normali who also lived in Estes Park for several years.

Frank peacefully passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at his home in Parma, Ohio surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services were conducted in Ohio following his death.

Frank and his former wife Judith (Ifft) Chandler moved from Ohio to Colorado in 1973. They purchased the Stanley Hotel in 1974. Frank loved the hotel at first sight and devoted the next 20 years of his life bringing her back from neglect and disrepair. Many believe that he saved the severely neglected historic hotel from the possible demolition that was being discussed prior to the Normali purchase. To prevent this from ever happening in the future in 1977 the Stanley was listed on

the National Register of Historic Places through his efforts. Later, the ownership donated a scenic easement which protected the primary view corridor of the hotel for all time.

During their ownership, millions were expended to repair, renovate and redecorate the historic buildings including installing heat for the first time to the main building in 1982 and sprinkler systems throughout the primary buildings.

Frank was able to purchase and return many of the original furnishings to the hotel that had been removed or sold over the years, including the baby grand piano that was a gift from F. O. Stanley’s to his wife Flora. The piano was played by John Philip Sousa and bears his signature.

Frank and Judith brought back awardwinning theater, music and the arts to the Stanley. The Stanley once again offered fine dining and entertainment. The Stanley became one of the top wedding venues in Colorado. Frank and Judith were host to many celebrities, artists, politicians and even royalty. Musicians Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Pablo Elivira, and Paul Simon along with Actors Dana Andrews, Richard Chamberlain, Michael Ansara, Beulah Bondi, Celeste Holm, Dale Robertson and many others stayed and/or performed at The Stanley. Baseball Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson.

Colorado’s Governor Dick Lamb and his

wife Dottie; Kansas Governor Alf Landon and many other politicians as well as Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko made a visit to The Stanley Hotel. Author Stephen King came to The Stanley in 1974. During his stay, he was inspired and wrote “The Shining” giving The Stanley the recognition it has as one of the most haunted hotels in America.

Through the devastating floods of 1976 and 1982 and the deep recessions of the 1980s, they persevered. In 1995, the Stanley was purchased by its present ownership and in 1996, Frank returned to Cleveland and restarted his investment business, and met and married Marilyn. He worked until almost the very end of his life in the business that he loved second only after that of Stanley Hotel Owner. In 2017, he completed and published his book, The Spirit of the Stanley which includes much of his story at the Stanley Hotel.

Frank Normali was an extraordinary and generous man, a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. Our lives have been greatly enriched by knowing him. His legacy will live on in all of us. That great lady, the Stanley, which sits on the hill overlooking the beautiful Town of Estes Park and spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park is part of the legacy he protected for us all.

Betty Ruth Adams

April 3, 1928 ~ April 30, 2018 Betty Ruth Adams, 90, was born on April 3, 1928 to Jess and Augusta B Coleman Adams in Harper Kansas. She passed peacefully early Monday morning April 30th 2018 at her home in Loveland, Colorado with family by her side.

Betty’s family moved to Beloit by the time she was one. Her father, Jesse Adams was the superintendent of the gas company and headed up the gas piping project for Beloit and surrounding towns. Betty was raised in Beloit Kansas and graduated from Beloit High School in 1946. While in high school Betty was awarded the honor of First Citizen. Betty was chosen by the seniors to represent the girls in her class of 1946 because of her sense of cooperation, responsibility and genuineness of character. While in high school, Betty held the office of Vice President of pep club, chorus, annual staff, and life staff.

Betty’s ability to write won her a prominent place in Beloit High School. This

honor she received was judged on cooperation, leadership, service, scholarship, character qualities and personality.

Betty’s strengths in English-Journalism landed her a job as a news reporter for the Beloit Newspaper while she was in high school. Betty was an avid swimmer and a lifeguard.

Education was always very important to Betty and she went on to receive her BA degree in English and Education from Washburn University in Topeka Kansas. She was a proud member of the Delta Gama Sorority and was the Secretary for the Dean of Woman.

In 1976 she obtained her MA degree in Library Media from Colorado University in Boulder Colorado. While working on her MA degree Betty was teaching school full time and taking care of her two kids, Anne and Mark, as a single parent. Her kids were her world; what a blessing to have her as a mother.

Betty loved teaching and her students loved her. She taught 25 years with the St Vrain Valley School District. Betty taught at Spangler Elementary, Lyons Elementary and Northridge Elementary, with most of her teaching career spent in Lyons, Colorado. Prior to teaching in the Longmont, Lyons area she taught two years in Kansas, seven years in the Denver, Lakewood and Aurora schools in Colorado. Before going to Longmont she set up libraries for the Topeka Public Schools. She was a member of the NEA, CEA and the SVVEA educational associations.

In addition to Betty Adams extensive

teaching career, she helped set up offices in Denver for an international company, Combustion Engineering. She obtained a Colorado securities license and a Colorado real estate license. She started selling real estate with the Pratt Agency in Longmont and was awarded with having the most listings shortly after starting, all while teaching full time and raising her two children. She also sold real estate for Better Homes and Gardens in Estes Park years later.

Betty retired the summer of 1995 and continued to enjoy her condo which sat on Fall River in Estes Park. Remaining very active and busy, she became the president of the Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed helping her grandchildren, Garry and Eric with their homework, taking them to ride go-carts, shopping at the Ore Cart rock shop, baking pancakes with blueberry syrup, chocolate chip cookies and spending time with family. She enjoyed mentoring a young girl, Dominique, who she would go roller skating, swimming and hiking with. She belonged to the YMCA and the Estes Park Athletic Club and remained an avid swimmer. She enjoyed a Hawaiian cruise with her sister Nadine after her retirement and had plans to do more traveling. She was able to enjoy two and a half years of her retirement before her life would drastically change due to unforeseen events after a mild heart attack Christmas Day 1997. Betty was lovingly cared for by her daughter Anne and

her two grandsons Garry and Eric for the last twenty years of her life.

Betty was preceded in death by her son Mark Adams and his wife Cathy Adams, her parents Jess Adams and Augusta Adams, her sister Nadine Reiter and brother-in-law Max Reiter.

Left to celebrate her life is her daughter Anne Cooper, her two grandsons Garry Cooper and Eric Cooper, her great granddaughter, Aurora Cooper of Loveland Colorado, her brother Jack Adams and his wife Dona Adams of Kansas City Missouri and many other relatives and friends.

We will miss my mom dearly! She truly was an amazing, strong and elegant woman who is an inspiration to us all!

Our love for her and all the wonderful memories will live on forever in our hearts and in our minds. Until we meet again we truly are blessed to have her as our guardian angel!

A Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. (noon). The celebration will be held at the Ponder Chapel located at the YMCA of the Rockies, 2515 Tunnel Road Estes Park, CO 80511. There will be a lunch reception next door at the Eagle Cliff Lodge following the service.

Burial will be in the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens next to her son Mark Adams and his wife Cathy Adams at a later date.
