For intervention, the school also has its own Restorative Practices program and uses Restorative Justice provided by the Estes Park Police Department. Restorative Practices and Restorative Justice promote and assist with healthy conflict resolution.

The schools also use several types of group circles to help create respect between students and staff.

Communication... This must happen between parents and the school. If your student is coming home and telling you something concerning is happening at school, the best thing you can do is talk to someone at the school about it. There are always two sides to every story and it is very important we all work together to investigate the situation.

Reporting is another issue the schools and I have addressed. The school district uses the Safe2Tell program. I talk to the students at the beginning of every year about Safe2Tell. This is an app on the student’s iPads they can use to report any concerns they have. The report is immediately texted and emailed to me, the principal and the counselor. The Safe2Tell report is anonymous. This helps the student feel more comfortable about reporting.

The school and I have several ways to deal with bullying, but if it’s not reported, we don’t know and we can’t intervene.

The school staff can’t be the only ones responsible for bullying issues. Bullying does not just happen at school. It happens everywhere. Parents also have a responsibility when it comes to prevention, consequences and reporting. It is very important that the school and parents communicate and support each other, while keeping in mind the difference between conflict and bullying. We are on the same team.

We have great schools full of great kids with caring parents who have been proactive in the fight against bullying. I am happy to be a part of this community and happy to have my kids enrolled in the Estes Park School District. We have to continue working together to keep our kids safe while promoting a positive learning environment.

Town Encourages Public Participation In Budget Process The Estes Park Town Board will review the proposed 2019 Town budget during study sessions and public hearings in October and November. Study sessions are scheduled for Fridays Oct. 12 from 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. and Oct. 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Public hearings on the budget take place during the Nov. 13 and 27 Town Board meetings with final adoption anticipated Nov. 27. The public is encouraged to attend and comment at these public hearings, which take place at 7 p.m. in the Town Board Room. The public is encouraged to attend the study sessions, although public comment is not part of the process until the Nov. 13 and 27 Town Board meetings.

Each October study session will include presentations on different funds within the Town government. The Oct. 12 study session will focus on a General Budget overview including employment compensation and benefits, Light and Power, Water, Information System Technology Fund, Executive, Legislative, Judicial, Administrative Services, Employee Benefits, Finance, Community Development, Community Services including the Visitor Center and Events, and Police. The Oct. 19 study session will focus on Cultural Services including Outside Entity Base Funding and the Museum, Facilities, Fleet Maintenance Fund, Parks, Open Space Fund, Conservation Trust Fund, Streets, Engineering, Streets Improvement Fund, Trails Fund, Transit, Parking, Community Center Fund, Community Reinvestment Fund, Vehicle Replacement Fund, Transfers, overall Budget Summary and draft Capital Improvement Plan.

Each year, the process begins with creating a budget schedule early in the year, usually March or April. Next, departments begin to review their budgets and potential needs for the following year.

Strategic planning meetings are held in June with the mayor and board of

trustees to determine priorities and give guidance in budget preparation. The departments then prepare their base budget requests along with service proposal change request forms with the strategic plan in mind and submit to the finance director. A base budget is then prepared with no operational changes as a starting point for the budget. Then departments rank the service proposal change request forms for the entire General Fund, identifying changes they would like to submit to the town administrator for consideration. The town administrator, working with the finance director, then identifies the changes to be included in the recommended budget. The finance director then prepares the proposed budget to be reviewed with the town board during the October budget study sessions. After the budget is approved in November, it is printed and submitted to the State of Colorado by the end of January.

The budget process requires Town staff and its elected town board to make difficult decisions to balance the Town’s limited revenues with the cost of providing its core services, as well as to consider the ever-growing demand for expanded public services. Although fewer than 6,500 residents live within Town limits, millions of guests also rely on the Town’s services. Instead of property taxes, which are kept low for its residents, sales taxes drive the Town’s general fund revenue so that visitors share the tax burden and support services like streets maintenance, parks, police services and many more.

On September 23 at 7:54 p.m. police responded to a reported assault at 1665 Hwy. 66. Upon arrival they arrested a 57 year old male from Arvada, CO and charged him with third degree assault, false imprisonment and a domestic violence enhancer against a 55 year old victim. The male was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

There have been various reports of graffiti showing up around town lately.

One was found by a Town employee on the railing of a bridge at 470 E. Elkhorn Ave. and another on the pedestrian bridge at 240 W. Riverside Drive. At this

time, there are no suspects and no leads to help solve this case. The Estes Park Police Department is seeking any information on these incidents and if anyone has any information, please contact the EPPD non-emergency number at 970-586-4000.

Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a Crimestoppers reward.

On September 19 at 5:08 p.m. police responded to a disturbance at 1753 Raven Avenue. Upon arrival, a 27 year old Estes Park male was charged with third degree assault, harassment and child abuse against a 32 year old victim. The male was also found to be wanted on a warrant for third degree assault, child abuse, theft and false imprisonment. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of September 23, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 13 calls for serv-

Are You Doing Your Part To Keep Bears Wild?

By: Police Chief Wes Kufeld and Public Information Officer Kate Rusch An abundance of wildlife is one thing that makes Estes Park an amazing town.

It's a special place that can be home to both humans and bears - and living here comes with extra responsibilities for the humans.

With the changing seasons comes a sense of urgency for bears as they seek enough calories to sustain them through winter dormancy. This time of year, the Estes Park Police Department receives bear-related calls almost daily. Sometimes the caller has just seen a bear passing through town, other times it's a bear checking around for an easy meal. If that seems harmless to you, think again.

Bears that get food rewards from homes and businesses are conditioned to return, associating humans with food and losing their natural fear of us. This can lead a bear down a dead-end path. That's on us, so it's up to each of us to make sure bears stay safe, and wild.

Help us uphold the Wildlife Protection Ordinance Larimer County (since 2017) and the Town of Estes Park (since 2015) have wildlife protection ordinances that require everyone in our valley to follow wildlife-friendly trash management practices. The ordinances set specific standards for the storage of refused located outside an enclosed structure, to make sure it doesn't attract and endanger wildlife. You can see how this would be particularly critical to bears. Our officers and Auxiliary actively patrol to educate and enforce this ordinance. While we're seeing better and better compliance each year, we have zero tolerance for violations and we have issued two dozen citations in 2018. Bears need 100% compliance!

These ordinances are helping - we are gradually seeing less activity in town.

Even if you're following the ordinance and doing your part, we still need your help enforcing this ordinance. If you call to report a potential violation, you could save a bear's life. Pass along your knowledge of bear dynamics It's easy to forget that newcomers and guests to Estes Park may not be aware they are sharing this beautiful area with bears. The next time you have guests,

take a few minutes to pass along wildlife tips -- like keeping doors and windows locked and removing food and other attractants from the car. You could point out one of the Town's 140 wildlife-resistant public trash and recycling containers that reduce the chances of bears and other wildlife becoming habituated to human food sources.

Shop, restaurant and lodging owners can share this same information with their guests. The Town sends reminders to vacation rentals, as well as a required poster to hang explaining why it's critical for occupants to comply with the ordinance.

Over the past six years, significant education efforts have been made by the Bear Education Task Force, in which we are proud to participate and even facilitated for several years. You'll see bearloving members of this group all over town at special events, sharing bear tips and pointers for being a responsible neighbor. Check out their many educational resources at www.estes.org/wildlife. There are even printable references you might find handy.

Make bears feel uncomfortable around your home and in town Why? Because a wild bear shouldn't be

comfortable around people. While Colorado Parks and Wildlife is the agency that manages wildlife and travels to Estes Park when needed, Estes Park Police respond to public safety emergencies. Our goal is to protect people and live in harmony with bears. If it's necessary, we take the opportunity to "haze" bears that are getting into trouble with paint balls, rubber buckshot or air horns. We do this to make their experience with humans a negative one and encourage them to find natural food sources. In the long run this

will protect them and keep them wild.

If you see a bear at home or in town, the best thing to do is stay safely out of its way and make lots of noise to scare it away. Use an air horn or bang on a metal pot until it leaves. The sad reality is -- a bear that spends more time around people is doomed.

What is important to understand is that your reaction to these words unearths your underlying values. Values are connected to what we believe to be true about ourselves and our world. These beliefs guide our actions and our interactions. When our values are challenged, we feel challenged -- it feels personal.

What is confusing is we share many commonly held values. This allows us to live and function together in society. But when asked to prioritize those values, our priority lists will not line up. What strongly influences our priorities are our current needs. Even though our values stay the same, our priority list will shift as our needs shift. Let me provide you with an example. A shared value among those who live in the Estes Valley is the importance of preserving the beauty of our natural surroundings. Another shared value is the importance of sustaining the local economy through offering a livable wage and attainable housing. Even though both of these values are held by most people who reside here, how they are prioritized is not. The differing needs of community members drive how these values are prioritized, thus resulting in a clash.

When values and their differing prioritizations clash, we tend to fall into a vicious cycle. What first occurs is an emotional response. Emotions are not negative. However, when we act out of

emotion without engaging our cognitive/thinking abilities, we often say and do things we later regret. We may initially feel better by expressing our feelings, but often harm is caused that can be difficult to repair.

Heightened emotions often lead to assumptions and judgments. It is easy to jump to conclusions based on our understanding of life and our experiences.

However, assumptions are not always accurate. With strong assumptions a quick step toward judgement is not far behind.

Judgements assign motive and often involve evaluation of character. I’ve not met any person who likes to be judged.

Yet we seem to frequently judge each other.

If we have decided that someone has a major character flaw or has bad motives then we move to mistrust. Once mistrust is in the mix, then the relationship breaks down. And then we begin the cycle all over again. The dynamic of differing values prioritization and how we respond to it provides a huge barrier toward civil discourse.

Next week we will further examine other dynamics and underlying causes that prevent us from engaging in civil discourse. We’ll begin to expand on the idea of civil discourse and what we can individually do to prepare for engaging in a civil manner.

Free Residential Slash Collection Dates Announced To help prepare for the coming wildfire season, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District is hosting two slash drop-off events. From 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th and Sunday, October 14th, property owners within the fire district are encouraged to bring slash to the Town of Estes Park property located at 640 Elm Road. The site entrance is on the right-side of Elm Road, just past the turn off to the Waste Management Transfer Station.

Appropriate materials (outlined below) can only be accepted during the designated times within the gated area. Please note that if guidelines are not followed, the Fire District may not be able to host future slash drop-off events.

Slash consists of tree trimmings, small tree trunks and shrubs that have been removed to create or improve defensible space around structures.

Materials accepted: • Branches/tree trimmings • Small tree trunks • Shrubs (no root balls) NOT acceptable: • Pine needles, cones and other small yard debris • Stumps

Start improving the defensible space around your home now! Fire fighters appreciate all the work property owners do to reduce wildfire hazards before there is an immediate threat.

Once a wildfire threatens an area, there isn’t time to do this important mitigation work. Here are some actions you can take to create a Firewise home with surrounding defensible space.

• Thin continuous tree and brush cover around all structures.

• Clean out gutters and roof areas where pine needles collect.

• Clean pine needles and other debris from under decks and in corners of structures.

• Mow grass and weeds around structures.

• Prune tree branches to eliminate the possibility of fire reaching the branches.

• Remove any small tree or shrub from under large trees to eliminate a ladder for fire up to the tree branches.

• Stack firewood at least 30 feet away from any structure.

• Post reflective house numbers at the edge of the road so they are clearly visible both day and night.

• Make sure the driveway is at least 12 feet wide and all tree branches are cleared to a height of 14 feet to allow emergency response vehicles safe access to all structures.

Last week I wrote about my parents, married 62 years and counting, who have recently moved into an independent living community. The family home of 45 years has been sold and tomorrow, when I drive away from 2110 in a rented cargo van holding a few pieces of furniture (just a few), I will never go into that house again.

My grief weighs heavy—deep in my chest—not so much because I’ll miss the house itself, but because the place I know so well, the memories it holds, the foundation it provided for the family—will no longer be accessible. Now, when my parents, my siblings and their offspring gather in Lincoln, we won’t all stay under the same roof, share meals at one long table, play Jarts in the back yard, light fireworks on the driveway, enjoy the aroma of Dad’s homemade bread, or sing songs around the piano.

The Donohoe base camp is shutting its doors and we’ll be left outside, waving slowly from the curb, tears spilling down our cheeks.

Where will we go for Thanksgiving?

For Christmas? Where will we find that bedrock of belonging we feel when we are home? What will be the glue to hold us together?

Every family has to deal with this situation at some point, so my experience is not unique. Many readers wrote to say they’re going through a similar episode—or have in the past. The resounding concern: nobody knows what to do with old photographs!

We may not want all the photographs, but we certainly wish we could hold onto the memories. Paul B. commented, “I just read your column about your family home. We have a house in EP, but we are living in Austria right now. I literally just got back after about a day of travel after having visited my soon-to-be 90-year-old dad in IL My wife and I have had the discussion of how to manage (I originally typed ‘dispose of ’) my dad's possessions. We've been thru this a couple times in the past few years when my mom and aunt died. But one thing in your column struck me since I was just thinking about it when I was 'home. ’ The sounds of the house will be gone with the possessions. My dad went out to get the paper while I was upstairs in my old room and the double clunk of the door closing made me think how long it has been since I had heard that. I started thinking about the other sounds I won't hear once we sell the house (squeak of

stairs, etc.) and how people probably would pay money to get recordings of their old houses and childhood memories. But as that isn't viable I was even thinking of a website or Facebook page that would allow people to request sounds from the current owners of their old houses. Well, in any case, I always enjoy your columns and maybe you can have someone take their iPhone into your old house and record some sounds for you. ” Neighbors too, are affected when long-time residents move away. Beth E., who grew up kitty corner from us, captured the essence of my dad and his 2110 pastimes when she reminisced, “I spent many an hour in that home across the street. I remember your dad digging out dandelions one at a time in the yard after work. At the time I wondered why. I have my own digger now—picked up at an auction or yard sale, and can appreciate some ‘dirt therapy’ catharsis. I also remember carpooling to junior high school to the sounds of barbershop quartets [Dinny sang lead in a barbershop chorus and loves to listen to those four-part harmonies]. Boy, did your family have ALL the board games. The stuff may be gone but the memories remain. ” Gretchen W., who lived a few houses away, went through the sale of her childhood home too. “I still can’t drive down the street without getting choked up, ” she said. “Now it’s going to be even sadder. I hope the new neighbors settle in well. ” And Ann B., who helped my mom redecorate years ago (the only time I ever remember any redecorating), reminisced, “I am a bit teary as I have so many memories of 2110 also. So many good times! ” Karen K., who lived a block away said, “Oh, the memories rush back and fill my heart with so much joy! ” Before I go, I hope to dig up some of my grandmother’s irises from the south side of the house and lily-of-the-valley from the north side, so that I may plant them in my yard where they—and I— can grow new roots.

I have my family, and wherever we gather, that will be home.

Estes Park Health Will Discuss Care Options Available For The Senior Populations Estes Park Health will be holding two informational sessions to educate the Estes Valley community about the services that are offered to fulfill our Mission to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of all we serve.

The goal of these sessions is to share what services are offered by the Estes Home Health Services, Estes Park Health Hospice Care and the Estes Park Living center. We will discuss Advance Directives and the importance of having your end of life care choices clearly stated in writing for family and loved ones. And, Chief Nursing Officer, Cindy Standlee will address the Colorado End of Life Options Act and Estes Park Health’s stance on this topic.

Informational sessions will be held: October 11 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Estes Park Health Longs Peak and Meeker conference rooms. Park in the main parking lot and a Volunteer will assist you in finding the room.

New York Portrait Photographer Featured In Art Show Now Open At The Estes Valley Community Center Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in the Estes Valley, is excited to announce the opening of the third art show at the Estes Valley Community Center, Portraits of Ability: Stories of Independence and Inspiration. The show is free and open to the public daily through January 3, 2019.

A free opening reception will be held on Friday, October 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lower lobby of the Estes Valley Community Center located at 660 Community Drive, Estes Park.

Light refreshments and appetizers will be served, and the event is open to the public.

The new show, which officially opened October 1, features a photojournalism exhibit from Via Mobility Services of Boulder, Colo. in partnership with VSA Colorado. The 15 photos capture the emotional stories of people served by Via, a nonprofit organization providing transportation services and resources for individuals living with mobility limitations. Each photo-portrait communicates the spirit and rich sense of who each person is — beyond their mobility challenges — as seen through the eyes of New York portrait artist, Sophie Klafter (www.sophieklafter.com).

The show employs the power of visual storytelling to transform personal narrative into public meaning and demands the audience to ask what are we doing to support these lives? The photos capture the passions, sadness, hardships, and joy of every single one of the 15 people in the portrait stories.

poignant, often inspirational glimpse into the lives of the individuals that Via serves. We are excited to share these sto-

Fine Arts Guild Brings Us Objectivity Obj b ectivity Dance Theatre bj At EPHS October 13 &14 The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is proud to present Objectivity Dance Theatre, October 13th at 7 p.m. and October 14th at 2 p.m., at the High School Auditorium. Please join us for this one-of-a-kind show that mixes contemporary ballet, circus artistry, and physical theatre. Movement artists Jennifer Aiken and Peter Davison astonish audiences and reveal shared aspects of life through their movements with objects, and each other.

Davison, winner of the Ballet Builders New Choreography award in 2009, joined with Aiken to explore their shared love of dancing with objects and a desire to create something new. Together, they formed Objectivity Dance Theatre in 2015, and have been treating audiences to their unique layering of virtuosity, dance, imagery, and humanity ever since. Aiken is a Colorado native who has been dancing and performing since the age of five, while Davi-

son began his career as a teenaged juggler on the streets of L.A. This performance is unlike any other, yet accessible to all audiences, young and old alike. On Saturday, October 13, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Community Church of the Rockies, the Rotary Club of Estes Park, Bestway Painting, and the League of Women Voters and Community Recycling Committee will be sponsoring Estes Recycles Day. There will be four stations: Scrap Metal Recycling, Shreda-thon, Paint Product Recycling, and Ecycling (electronics). The event will take place in the church parking lot, 1700 Brodie.

No Freecycle will occur this fall. Please take your reusable items to the local thrift shops or non-profit garage sales over the fall holidays.

In Colorado it is illegal to add electronics or paint products to garbage or recycling bins (transfer station or curbside).

It is also illegal to bury them in the back yard, place them in public disposal bins, or leave them by the side of the road.

There is good reason for that. Electronic devices contain hundreds of materials within wires, solder joints, resistors, capacitors and transistors. They contain toxic metals such as antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, and thallium, and hazardous compounds such as brominated flame retardants. This may be fine insulated and encased in a TV, cell phone, or computer, but exposed to the environment (including lightning), they can produce toxic results. Therefore disposal should be handled by certified companies who know how to dispose of such things as hexavalent chromium and insulating polyvinyl chloride.

So what can you do with that big TV in your living room that was replaced last year by an even bigger, clearer, HDTV? You can drive it down to the valley below to an electronic recycler or Estes Recycles Day (twice a year) will take it for you. LWV & CRC accepts your electron-

ics (TVs, audio/video equipment, cell phones, and anything that had a battery or has a cord-except batteries and microwave ovens) at the E-cycling station.

N, this service is not free. (fee chart available at recycleestes.org/ecycleprice-schedule-2018 for view or download.) We take the electronics to CHaRM in Boulder, who, although they feel strongly about the environment, still like to be paid for their workday. We charge slightly more than they do to cover the cost of the trucks and the trip down the mountain. Leftover income (if any) is spent expanding recycling opportunities in the Estes Valley.

They reuse what they can and properly recycle the rest, both of which allow you to remove old, useless, toxic materials that no longer match the rooms in your house.

In school, Andrea is a member of Student Council, Youth in Action and in the choir. She maintains a 4.0 GPA. She admits to having a “weird obsession” with math and enjoys her math classes very much.

Outside of school Andrea loves reading, watching TV, walking and watching her two little brothers (which she says can be a bit challenging).

Andrea’s favorite quote is “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in great ways” by Martin Luther King, Jr. She tries to follow this quote everyday.

After school she plans to attend college either in Oregon or in Colorado, (she hasn’t decided where just yet) to earn her degree in medical/pharmaceutical research.

ON YOUR WAY TO DISNEYLAND? HOW’S THAT WORKING FOR YOU? You’ve probably seen the commercials where some star athlete has just won a big event and is asked, “Now that you have won the World Series…the Super Bowl… the U.S. Open, what are you going to do?” The star’s answer: “I’m going to Disneyland.”

Many of us would like to do the same! We’d like to be able to run away from the challenges of life and end up in Frontier Land, Fantasy Land, Adventure Land, or take a ride on Space Mountain. What a great experience that would be! However, perhaps your experience would end up like mine, riding home from Disneyland after all the sights and rides…especially that wild ride in the Mad Hatter’s Teacup…with my head sticking out of my friend’s car, thoroughly nauseated and requiring several emergency stops.

That seems to be how it was with a man in The Bible who wanted to sample all of life.

Solomon not only considered many enticing things, but also had means to pursue them. These ‘Disneyland experiences’ are described in the book of Ecclesiastes, which Solomon wrote late in his life, listing the things in which he sought to find meaning and enjoyment…things that many of us have longed for in order to find fulfillment.

First, Solomon pursued knowledge and learning about all ‘things under the sun’. His conclusion: “In much wisdom is much grief and he who increases knowledge also increases sorrow.” Great learning is not the answer. Secondly, he said: “I know. I will try mirth, laughter, and pleasure”. After he and guests sipped, or guzzled, wine, becoming ‘party animals’” he concluded: “This also is vanity. I said of laughter, ‘foolishness’ and of pleasure, ‘what does it accomplish?’” His third pursuit was seeking success, by the building and gathering of all kinds of things: houses, gardens, fruit trees, refreshing pools. At first, his ‘heart rejoiced in his labor’ only to realize that it provided no lasting satisfaction. He next sought to expand his circle of power, gathering servants and maidens to serve in his home. Next he turned his energies to the accumulation of riches: gold and silver and other ‘treasures of kings’, to the extent that his wealth was known all over the world. Still not satisfied, he filled his home with musicians, men and women singers, and all kinds of musical instruments. Now, he had pretty much all that anyone could need…along with all his wives and other women partners. And how’s that working for you, Solomon, as you try to fill that ‘empty hole’ in your heart?

He summed it up: “So I was great and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem…whatsoever my eyes desired I kept not from them and I withheld not my heart from any joy…and then I looked at all I had wrought and the labor I had labored to do and, behold, all is ‘vanity’ (Greek word = ‘soap bubbles’), resulting in no real profit under the sun.” But Solomon was not alone in his frustrated ‘strivings’. Hear these: Nero had it all: riches, silver-shod horses, a two million dollar crown, never wore the same garment twice, ruling the Roman empire. Result? Gloomy, depressed, suicide.

Ralph Barton, top cartoonist of his day, pinned this note to his pillow before taking his own life: “I have had few difficulties, many friends, great successes; I have gone from wife to wife, from house to house, visited great countries of the world, but I am fed up with inventing devices to fill up twenty-four hours of the day.”

They, and we, need to heed Solomon’s advice: “Fear God and keep His commandments: this is the whole duty of man.” Let’s seek true happiness!

Healing Waters Helps Local Resident Defy Medical Predictions

Last September Angela Treimer’s doctor told her she had six months to live.

Instead of giving up, she moved from Illinois to the Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park to be near her sister and brother. The rest of the story defies medical predictions.

“My last scan showed that not only did the tumors in my lungs not grow, they were receding,” says Angela with a smile.

“With Healing Waters and being outdoors here in Estes Park, I feel so much better. I feel stronger overall and calmer.”

Her oncologist, Dr. Matthew Sorenson, from the UC Health Cancer Care and Hematology Clinic in Ft. Collins agrees.

“Angela has benefitted greatly from attending Healing Waters five to six days a week. It has improved the quality of her life,” said Dr. Sorenson.

Healing Waters (1632-B Big Thompson Avenue) is a unique heated pool with a treadmill and other equipment to facilitate strength building and therapeutic exercise for a range of conditions. The facility is designed to be used by one person at a time and is the brainchild of Annie Slack, a local retired physical therapist.

Angela says she visited the new parks and recreation pool, but decided it was “not really set up for my kind of handi-

cap.” She noted that the distance from the dressing room to the pool was “a long way.”

In May she began attending Healing Waters where she works out on the warm water treadmill. “Becky Sorensen, the pool manager, and her staff are concerned about my safety and put me in a lift chair to get in and out of the pool.

All of the people there are generous with their time,” she said.

“Sometimes I get a cramping pain in my right leg,” says Angela, “but the minute I get into the pool, it’s instant relief.”

According to Angela, she has only missed one or two days. “In the beginning my sister took me and picked me up, but then we found VIA Mobile Transport.” (VIA Paratransit Service can be reached at 303-444-3043.)

After swimming, Angela spends the afternoons at her brother’s home in Estes Park where she sits outside on the patio and enjoys “the beautiful Colorado healing weather.”

Angela says that at $140 a month for unlimited access to the pool, “Healing Waters is a really good deal. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it!”

Table Setting Competition Celebrates Stories, Memories And Creativity

Tableware handed down through the families is often rich with stories.

Within every piece of china, silver spoon, and pottery set, and crystal goblet there are the memories of special occasions and the joy of gatherings to come. Celebrating those stories and providing creative ways to display these items—whether vintage or contemporary, formal or informal—has been the inspiration behind a special competition that is now entering its third year on the Estes Park scene this October 19 and 20.

More than just a fundraiser, the Colorado TableSettings Competition is a stunning visual celebration that provides an opportunity for creativity from participants, with each table as its own canvas. Spectators remark on how much they enjoy touring the tables and voting on their favorites.

Last year’s local event was featured nationally in an Associated Press article that explored the popularity of table settings competitions around the United States. The article included an interview of first-year winner Andrea Smith, who spoke of the planning that goes into arranging a setting. “You should see my dining room table,” Smith said. “It becomes my laboratory.”

Smith went on to note that many of the items in her inaugural winning setting were not handed down through the family, but were treasures found at the thrift store, including a beautiful set of pine cone-rimmed dishes.

“Everybody else was using their grandma’s china,” she said. “I don’t have my grandma’s china. My grandfather did the dishes and he wasn’t a careful dishwasher. Everything was cracked and chipped. I used amber glasses and colorful elements. The colors drew people in immediately ” This October’s event is once again a benefit for the Estes Park Museum Friends and Foundation. With several years’ experience, committee members have refined and improved the process for participants. For table setters, the process includes guidelines and category definitions, as participants can choose

the category in which they seek to enter.

Information on the scoring checklists is also available to help participants understand the nuances that will help their setting stand out. Each entry also features a menu of the meal to be served: the menu is simply designed to suggest the types of food that could be served, as no actual food is prepared or served.

This year’s special theme is “Table Settings Around the World.” Participants set up their tables on Thursday, October 18, one day before the exhibit is open to the public. Judges evaluate tables that evening, then the public views and casts their votes on Friday and Saturday for “Best in Show.”

Individual adults, children, shops and businesses, and hiking or social groups are invited to register for the contest.

The entry fee is $20 for individuals and $30 for groups. Participants will set up their entries on tables provided at this year’s event location, the Community Church of the Rockies, on Thursday, October 18. Judging will take place later that evening, and the public will be invited to view all entries on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year everyone admitted to the show will be asked to vote on a personal favorite for the "Best in Show" prize, which will be announced on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Eternal Summer November 22, 1976, 9:00 a. m. The boss walked in and eyeballed fifteen field staff who had just reported for work in the newly-created California Conservation Corps (CCC).

“Oubre! “Burkhardt! Where are you? ” We raised our hands. “You two are responsible for the CCC education program; be back in three days. Why are you still sitting there? ” John O and I stepped outside, introduced ourselves, and walked to Juliana’s Kitchen for a lingering lunch over life stories. “Call me John O. No-one can spell or pronounce my last name. ” He was from Louisiana, a former Catholic priest who worked with inmates and fought for civil rights; I admired his vibrant optimism, self-deprecating humor and deeply centered serenity.

Together, and as partners, we helped to create, shape and lead three successful organizations: the CCC, the San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC), and Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center in Estes Park, Colorado (ERS). John O was the spiritual center of every team. There were times when he was my boss, times when I was his. Irrespective of the organization chart we were co-equal partners, allies, colleagues and teammates. That was our deal.

In the CCC John O was, among many other things, “designated hitter” when things went south. Just as the Texas Rangers were known for sending only one Ranger (“Well, there’s only one riot”), John O had a way of entering difficult situations solo and calming sturm und drang through his irresistible presence. His soothing patience, beguiling honesty and good-humored ethical inflexibility quelled tension, almost inevitably resulting in group hugs, smiles all around and John O belting out a chorus of “Kumbaya.” Young men and women who thirsted to stay angry were foiled by John O’s contagiously disarming laughter; it rolled out, curled around them and drew them inexorably toward the twinkle in his eye. “Darn it, John O, why do you have to be so happy when I want to be mad?”

Students entered Eagle Rock School in September 1993. John O opened their first meeting with this question: “What constitutes a safe community? ” Two days later (pausing only for meals and sleep) the students had come to consensus on non-negotiable rules for the school concerning tobacco, drugs, alcohol, sex and violence. Those standards remain in place.

Camp Dudley, the oldest boys camp in America, enshrines this motto: “The other fellow first.” That phrase exemplifies John O’s life. He was the kind of person we want to be in our heart of hearts: generous, kind, compassionate, thoughtful and full of good cheer. In forty-plus

years I saw him angry once, after a particularly churlish adolescent’s nonstop sewer language and grating behavior provoked John O, who had been working eighteen-hour days for weeks, to finally raise his

voice. Those of us present were astonished, not so much by the youth’s callousness as that JOHN O RAISED HIS VOICE! John O agreed with Marian Wright Edelman: service is the rent we pay for living. Service was in his bone marrow; he was the first to reach for a broom, a mop, a dishrag or an apron. Doing good was his modus operandi. “Hotdoggit!” he would say, and was never happier than when organizing a Bunco game, helping with chores, leading a singalong, brewing a vat of gumbo, counseling someone in need, writing a note to cheer a friend, or simply being of use.

Just as Wayne Gretzky skated to where the puck would be, John O’s uncanny prescience sensed needs of others; he arrived bearing timely support. That gift made the world a better place as he found needs and filled them.

It was my honor to introduce John O to Yosemite National Park, where on a 1977 summer Sunday we hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls. His sense of wonder was on full display as we switchbacked up the steep North wall. Descending hikers told us “It’s worth it” as we trekked toward the top. There, after a lunch of PBJ sandwiches and sliced oranges, we sat by Yosemite Creek and watched, mesmerized, as swifts barreled down the smooth granite half-pipe

carved over centuries. A swift would fly low, fast and straight just over the creek surface; when water went from horizontal to vertical in open air 3000 feet above the Valley floor, each swift would explode in cartwheels, twists and somersaults, then shake its feathers and fly back to line up for another run.

John O’s smile was euphoric.

John O and I were invited by the head of Recreation and Parks to a 49ers game (SFCC did a lot of work for The City).

We happily headed for Candlestick Park with a big bag of John O’s renowned fried chicken, fuel for noshing during halftime. Surprise! Our “seats” were in the DeBartolo suite (he owned the 49ers), where Governor Brown, Mayor Feinstein, Assembly Speaker Brown and numerous other high rollers were snacking from a long buffet table laden with Dungeness crab, high-end roast beef, tasty tapas and other delicacies. John O glanced around discreetly, surreptitiously deposited the grease-stained brown bag in the nearest garbage can, and reached for a plate.

Our families adored vacations in Barra de Navidad, a small town on the Pacific three hours south of Puerta Vallarta.

John O came alive in surf and sun, organizing big meals and deep-sea fishing jaunts. Once an angry Marlin, attempting to snap the line, leapt into our small craft. “Hotdoggit! ” was John O’s response as the rest of us sprawled for cover and safety.

In Joshua Tree during an early CCC staff retreat a huge rattlesnake signaled its presence from under a bush, sending most of us scurrying. John O’s face lit up; he grabbed a stick and started poking.

“Come out here, fella. ” The rattler made even more noise. John O was unfazed.

deep center and grinning around the bases; a deft, one-finger volleyball flick over an opponent whose mistimed blocking leap fell short; commandeering two FEMA trailers at Marina Middle School after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, ensuring visibility and work for SFCC; family camping weekends in Mendocino; thank-you notes decorated with hand-drawn flowers; his endless collection of Hawaiian shirts; John O on horseback wearing a huge black garbage bag during merciless downpour in Kings Canyon’s Dusy Basin; John O arriving in Barra de Navidad for the first time, pleasantly asking every villager he encountered “Donde los gringos?” until someone steered him toward our beach hotel.

Like so many others whose lives he touched, I wanted to be near his booming laugh, gracious presence, unrelenting civility, loving embrace, cooperative nature, innate humility, incorruptible integrity, joy in living and indefatigable optimism. For almost everyone who met him, John O’s spirit became the air they breathed. He was the best person I have ever known: my friend, brother, peer and partner. His passing created a hole in my heart that will be slow to heal.

Lizzie’s and my kids were his and Janine’s, and theirs were ours. Joel, Maya, Jared, Faith, Eileen and Patrick shared many adventures with John O. He nurtured the best in them as he did in all of us. Walter Lippmann said of FDR, “The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind in others the conviction and will to carry on. ” John O’s legacy of love, laughter, loyalty and leadership meets that test through the thousands who carry him in their hearts.

Global Clean Water Program Got Its Start In Estes Park With support of 5 Bobs, 1 Tom and the Noon Rotary Club By: Rita DuChateau

The year: 1994; the place, McDonald’s in Estes Park; the people, five Rotarians and a Rotarian’s son; the goal: to create a project that would change lives through clean water.

Just as water is formed by the strong bond between hydrogen and oxygen, five men named Robert and one named Tom created a powerful bond 24 years ago that resulted in a clean water supply for developing countries. The project was named CLARO, which means “clear” in Spanish.

“The idea of the CLARO project was born at a committee meeting at McDonald’s when Bob Quick, a Rotarian, brought his son, Dr. Robert Quick of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), to present his plan for providing clean water to rural, poor villages in Bolivia,” explained Tom Maher, a member of the original group.

The other Rotary Club of Estes Park members present that day in 1994 were: President Bob McFarland, PresidentElect Bob Hamblin and Robert Burkhardt. Maher recalls that the committee named him chairman because he was the only “non-Bob” in the group.

The availability of safe water drastically reduces cholera outbreaks and related health problems, Dr. Quick told the group that day. His concept consisted of providing safe containers to be made in Bolivia for water and chlorine. Shipping the containers from the U.S. would be cost-prohibitive; molds were needed for fabricating the containers in Bolivia, Dr.

Dr. Quick’s initial project has grown to include other health interventions and additional cooperating partners. It is now called the Safe Water System and is in use in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

He is good with other dogs and peo-

ple. He is house trained and would do better with bigger kids. He needs to learn some basic commands but is very sweet. He is a big guy and weighs about 70 lbs.

Mr. Hielscher is an internationallyknown church musician, composer of organ music and concert organist. He has been the organist and carillonneur since 1979 at the Wiesbaden Marktkirche, the Lutheran Cathedral in Wiesbaden, Germany. He has performed on many radio and television broadcasts and has produced 23 CD recordings. He conducts annual organ recital tours around the world. He is now on a concert tour in the United States. Mr. Hielscher provided a well-received concert at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies two years ago and is here on a return engagement.

The Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies is located at 1700 Brodie Avenue.

Like to dance? Friday Niters Dance Club is seeking new members and has a deal for you. First time attendees are invited to enjoy the season's opening dance on October 12th for free. Genealogical Society Meeting Oct. 11 The Estes Park Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m. in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library. Professional genealogist Diane Barbour of Broomfield will present “What’s In a Name?� Beginning with the Norman Conquest in England to modern day surnames, this presentation includes the history and evolution of surnames. Diane will discuss patronymics and their variations from several countries to provide an understanding of the meaning and origination of family surnames.

Diane has been doing genealogy for over 15 years. In June 2012, she graduated from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies at the University of Toronto to complete her Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical

Studies or PLCGS. This certificate represents 50 completed classes in methodology, American records and English records. Diane continues her education by attending several conferences and Institutes every year. She is the past President of Broomfield Genealogical Society and is currently on the education committee for Boulder Genealogical Society.

She volunteers at the Denver Public Library and the National Archives, Southwest Branch in Broomfield.

The society meets the second Thursday of every month from January through November in the library, offering a wide variety of programs and workshops. Anyone interested in genealogy and family history research is welcome to attend the meetings.

Is Your “Digital Estate” In Order?

If you spend a lot of time on the internet, you’re not just shopping or being entertained, or following the news or participating in an online community.

You’re probably also dealing with accounts and information that eventually can become part of your digital “estate.”

And if this estate isn’t properly looked after, it can lead to confusion and conflict among your survivors, as well as an opportunity for hackers to try to get at whatever resources they can touch.

If you haven’t stopped to think about it, you might be surprised at the number of assets that could become part of your digital estate. You may have financial accounts (banking, brokerage and bill-paying); virtual property accounts (air miles, “points” for hotel bookings); business accounts (eBay, Amazon, Etsy); e-mail accounts (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo); social networking accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram); online storage accounts (Google Drive, iCloud, Drobox); and application accounts (Netflix, Kindle, Apple).

Given all these areas, how can you protect and preserve your digital estate? Here are a few suggestions: • Create a detailed inventory of digital assets. Following the categories listed above, draw up a list of all your digital assets.

• Document your wishes for how you want your digital assets managed. If you don’t specify how you want your digital assets managed upon your death or incapacitation, you might be opening the door to lengthy legal battles over access to these assets. In a worstcase scenario, your heirs and beneficiaries might never get the assets you had intended for them.

• Name a digital executor in your last will and testament. A digital executor

can accomplish a variety of tasks related to your digital estate, such as transferring online assets to your heirs; closing accounts you don’t want transferred; managing personal materials by archiving or deleting files, photographs, videos and other content you have created; and, finally, informing online communities of your passing.

When choosing a digital executor, you’ll want someone you can trust, of course, but you’ll also want to make sure that person is skilled enough in technology to search your computer properly and navigate the internet and multiple websites. Not all states recognize a digital executor, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn about the laws governing digital estate planning in your state.

Also, even if you have a digital executor, online platforms enforce their own rules about who can or can’t access a deceased person’s accounts. If you are concerned about this, you may want to contact the customer service areas from these types of providers – Google, PayPal, Facebook, etc. – to learn their policies.

• Review your plans. Review your digital estate plans on a regular basis, just as you do with your physical/tangible estate plans. The digital world is a fastmoving one, so you’ll need to stay current with changes.

In some ways, managing a digital estate can be more challenging than dealing with a physical estate. But by following the above suggestions, you can help reduce any “cyber-angst” your loved ones may feel when it’s time to deal with the digital presence you’ve left behind.

It’s a day at school. But not just any other day. For every third, fourth and fifth grader, there is an excitement in the air. All classrooms assemble together for the shared enjoyment of children’s theater, the magic of storytelling, and the opportunity to inspire young minds toward lifelong reading, learning and imagination.

Several times a year, the library partners with the Estes Park School District to impact young students in a big way.

This season, it’s happening Thursday, October 11, at 9:15 a.m., when we welcome the Creede Repertory Theater for their touring performance, “Seeds of Change.”

Students and their teachers will gather in the Elementary School Gymnasium for this special event made possible by the Library and our School partnership.

Homeschool families are always welcome and encouraged to join us.

Creede Repertory is renowned for 35 years of high-quality performances geared especially for young people. Inspired by myth, fairy tales, and Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” the “Seeds of Change” musical fosters environmental literacy through poetry, learning, and audience participation.

Whether it’s a troupe of musical performers like Creede, or a visiting children’s author like Gennifer Choldenko who came to town last winter, the feedback we receive from these special assemblies is powerful. Children tell us— and their teachers—how these events motivate them to read more, while creat-

ing shared learning discussions with their peers. In their day-to-day school experience, it’s a big deal.

The “Seeds of Change” musical-performance helps advance two of the library’s key Strategic Objectives in early literacy: To develop young minds so that, a) they become year-round readers, and b) their creativity and problem-solving potential is expanded.

To support literacy, every student attending “Seeds of Change” will go home with a free children’s book after the show. Creede’s books are designed to reinforce the themes of the performance—while making reading exciting for kids.

“Students were positively engaged with the performance,” said one teacher after a regional show. “They were laughing, responded to the actors and left wanting to read books. What teachers could ask for anything more?”

In “Seeds of Change,” children will follow the adventures of a young girl who leaves the isolated Isle of Oro where she grew up, embarking on a journey of self-discovery. The story delves into the topics of environmental science, ocean plastic, and habitat loss, while offering a positive message of hope and empowerment.

We are grateful for our continuing partnership with the Estes Park School District and all the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers for bringing their classrooms to this day of shared learning and inspired literacy. It’s a great investment in our local children, in their learning success, and in our community.

What’s Happening At The Estes Valley Library Library Closed on Monday, October 8 The library will be closed all day this Monday, October 8, for a staff training and development day. Regular library hours this fall are: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Comments To Estes Park Town Board To The Editor: I address my comments to Mayor Jirsa, but of course, they are of concern to all of the Board members.

At the Board meeting of Sept. 11th, as reported in the Sept. 14th Trail Gazette, … “Mayor Todd Jirsa said he wanted to see more modeling of the Loop Project based on if RMNP makes a decision to limit access”. I question the wisdom and intent of this statement based on three points: 1) The management decisions of Federal agencies are subject to change. I question why a long term town project should be contingent upon an analysis of what the National Park Service might or might not decide to do over an undetermined period of time.

2) While traffic connected directly to the National Park is certainly a substantial component of the vehicular flow through our streets, it must certainly be recognized that another substantial component is access to and from the western section of Estes Park. This includes more than a dozen businesses, more than 100 residences, and of course, the YMCA campus, the largest lodging facility in our valley. Does not this segment of our local economy deserve consideration beyond the shifting decisions of a Federal agency?

3) I question the necessity of yet another study of this traffic improvement plan, which has been the subject of the expenditure of so much time and treasure by our Town government. I wonder if there is anything of value to be gained by the Mayor’s request for this modeling other than possibly more arguments for those who oppose the Loop Plan and want to bring it all to a halt.

The Mayor is quoted again in this article “…there have been some concerns raised in the community that the possibility of accessing the National Park as the driver for this project may be limited, and in fact the better driver in this is the circulation of traffic within Estes

Park itself and addressing that issue. ” I have puzzled over the intent of this statement much as I have puzzled over instructions for my Federal tax return and found that both have in the end left me confused.

Mayor Jirsa, I believe that you and two other Board members have voted to delay or derail The Loop Project that has been in planning for five years. You may argue that you are acting in response to some of your constituents who oppose this plan, and that is understandable.

But I am also your constituent, and I strongly support this plan. If you and the other two Board members have valid reasons to halt this project aside from the wishes of some residents, I feel that you are obliged to make a clear and public statement of your reasons. I request more than a coffee chat or a yard sign. Instead I request a clear and public statement of why this obviously beneficial traffic improvement plan should be discarded.

I call upon all of us whose homes and work are connected to this community to consider the consequences if our abominable traffic congestion continues unabated. Will we finally be moved to take action if an avoidable tragedy occurs because the passage of an emergency vehicle is delayed by traffic gridlock through our central business district, or if a catastrophic collision occurs at the extremely dangerous intersection of Moraine Ave and Crags Drive?

Yes, there will be acquisition of private business and residential property in the construction of The Loop Project, and this may cause some difficulties for those affected by these acquisitions. So I will conclude my comments with a quote from that controversial leader of the French Revolution, Maximilian Robespierre: “If you want to make an omelet, you must break some eggs! ” Steve Komito, Estes Park

William A. King friends, Bill gathered his groomsmen by calling out into the Navy barracks, “Hey, boys! Who wants to go to a party?! ” Bill and Irene married on February 25, 1945, and quickly settled into married life in post-War America. They raised two children, William Warren and Kathleen Anne, in Chicago, and Bill took a job with the Jewel Tea Company as a butcher. He eventually worked his way up to regional manager, a position he held until his retirement in 1974.

Bill and Irene moved from Chicago to Estes Park, Colorado with the intent to settle into a comfortable and quiet retirement, but Bill was lured back into William A. He was also extremely active as a parishioner of Our Lady of the Mountain’s Catholic Church. A member of The Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree), Bill often dressed as St. Nicholas and passed out gifts to children at Christmas, he served as an usher at Our Lady into his 90s, and made thousands of handcrafted rosaries that were sent to Catholic churches and parishes around the world. Though it has been decades since the War, Bill remained focused on the United States Navy and to military service people. His work as a member of the Honor Flight of Northern Colorado fundraising committee helped ensure that as many former military service people as possible could experience traveling to Washington D. C. to visit the various military memorials the city has to offer.

Bill was, as ever, devoted to his Irene, and through his dedicated care, ensured that she would be able to stay in their house on the mountain until her final days. “It was the best job I ever had, ” he often said about being her caregiver. After Irene’s passing in 2014, Bill – known as Poppa to his family – would sit on his sofa in his living room in Carriage Hills, making rosaries, gazing out at his beloved Mummy range and reflecting on their 69 years together.

Bill passed away on August 25, 2018, only three weeks shy of his 97th birthday. His nearly 100 years were among the greatest periods of change for the world, and Bill was always aware, appreciative, and introspective about those changes and what they meant for his family and for humanity as a whole. William A. King is survived by his son Bill King and his wife, Mary; daughter Kathy Steinbach and her husband, Tom; grandchildren Sarah Steinbach-Ball and her husband, Randy; Julia King-Robles and her husband, Jesse; Laura King-Miller and her husband, Mike; Rebecca Steinbach-VanGorden and her husband, Schuyler; Andrea Campos and her husband, Ernesto; and Erika Duemig. Bill was blessed with six great-grandchildren: Randy and Jason Miller; Jacqueline and Antonio Campos; and Aerial and Carson Duemig as well as two greatgreat-grandchildren, Shaylin and Rylan Miller.

Bill leaves behind a true legacy of love and family and friends, and though he has been reunited with his dear Irene, he will be greatly missed by those who remain behind.

Services for Bill will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church located at 920 Big Thompson Ave, Estes Park, CO, 80517. The Rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.

Final Show Of Ghost Town Lecture And Award-Winning Documentary

On Saturday, October 13, the Historic Park Theatre will host the final 2018 presentation of the multimedia lecture Ghost Towns of the American West, followed by the last screening of the Best Documentary Award-winning film Ghosts of the West: The End of the Bonanza Trail. Both were shot on location in ghost towns and mining camps throughout Colorado and the western United States.

The lecture portion of the program draws from twenty years of research, and includes tales of the rise and fall of Old West towns accompanied by both historical and contemporary images. The presentation is based in part on the documentary film and its follow-up, currently in production, and a book, currently in preparation. At its April debut for the Niwot Historical Society, more than 200 people packed the hall beyond capacity: every seat was filled not long after the doors opened; all standing room along the back and side walls up to the projection wall was taken soon after; and, the last to arrive before start time could only watch from outside the entrance. The October program at the Park Theatre will be the last opportunity to see the lecture before it moves to Chautauqua in April 2019.

Ten years in the making, the film Ghosts of the West: The End of the Bonanza Trail has been enormously popular with audiences ever since its test screenings at the Park in 2012; box office lines and capacity crowds, including sold- out events, were common sights throughout its the-

atrical road show. The film had the most successful turnout of any 2013 independent event held at Landmark’s Esquire Theatre in Denver; and, in 2014 it gave the 225-seat Historic Park Theatre its first sold-out show since 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum. Motion picture and television executives, academics, and film critics honored the film with a Best Documentary Award in 2013.

According to one of the on-screen experts, the old hotels and saloons hold an almost magical appeal that draws people in, their eyes lighting up at the very sound of the words “ghost town.” Audiences have resoundingly agreed, rating the film a 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 5 with supporting written comments such as: “This is something that begs to be viewed more than once;” “Outstanding research and script;” “Loved the cinematography;” and “Haunting.”

Writer-Director/Speaker E. S. Knightchilde will present both the lecture and the film, and will answer questions about the entire project after each program.
