The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On January 3 at 10:33 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 200 block of Cleave St. On scene they arrested a 22 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with third degree assault. She was later transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On January 5 at 7:04 p.m. police contacted a 48 year old male driver from Estes Park in the 300 block of Big Horn Drive. The male was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was issued a summons for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to notify police of an accident and careless driving.

He was later released to a sober adult.

On January 7 at 10:18 p.m. police contacted a 30 year old male from Estes Park at Virginia Drive/Park Lane.

The male was found to be wanted on a warrant from Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office for felony theft of $2,000-$5,000.

He was later released on bond.

On January 8 at 8:48 a.m. police contacted a 52 year old male driver from Estes Park in the 400 block of South St. Vrain Ave. for speeding. The male was arrested and charged with speeding 1019 mph over the speed limit, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving while license revoked. He was found to be wanted on a warrant for failure to appear on a traffic offense and was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

The Power Of Endowment In 2011, EPH Foundation donor Ruth Ann Southwick passed away. Like many retirees living in Estes Park, she spent her summers in Estes Park and winters in Arizona. She used services at Estes Park Health and decided to leave a generous estate gift.

Southwick gave just over $450k to the endowment fund at EPH Foundation in 2011.

An endowment fund is a legal structure for perpetuating resources according to the will of its donors. While most give to an endowment fund as part of their will, gifts can be made at any time. Endowment funds are designed to keep principal intact so that funds can grow over time. In fact, the EPHF Board is prevented from using the principal balance for grants or operations but can use earnings.

Since 2011, EPHF’s Endowment Fund has earned an average of 10.5% each year, which means that Southwick’s con-

tributions now amount to $1,221,336.

Her original investment of $450k has earned $771,336 in interest over 10 years. This is the magic of compounding interest and the reason why donations to endowment funds perpetuate the missions of nonprofit organizations for years to come.

The Foundation funds projects for EPH each year through a combination of funds raised from contributions and dollars earned through endowment investment gains (if applicable). American Legion Post 119 Hosts Several Events For Marshall Fire Veterans Supporting active service members and veterans is a founding principle of the American Legion as an organization. So, when it was learned several members of Louisville’s American Legion Post 111 had lost their homes and others had suffered damage in the Marshall Fire, Estes Park’s Legion Post 119 did not hesitate to jump into action This weekend the Post has scheduled the first of its fund-raising events benefitting those Legion members impacted by the fire. Residents of the Estes Valley have learned firsthand that recovering from a devastating fire takes months if not years to accomplish. As a result, Post 119 is planning a progressive, multiphase campaign to support the Louisville veterans.

The first event is January’s Steak Night at the Legion Friday, Jan. 14th. The meal will be served from 5:30-7 p.m. and includes a cooked-to-order steak, sides, and dessert. The cost is $25 per person.

All proceeds, including the bartender’s tips, will be donated to the Louisville Post by the Legion Riders, Legion Auxiliary, and waitstaff.

Commander Tina Schaffer of Louisville Post 111 has indicated the veterans impacted have a need for essential personal items such as soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, etc. There is also a need for new underwear and new socks. Saturday, Jan

15th the Estes Valley community will have an opportunity to contribute those items at the Legion located at located at 850 N. Saint Vrain Ave. from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Please note that other types of clothing will not be accepted at this time.

The weekend’s final fundraiser for the week will take place during Sunday’s Bingo Night. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will also benefit the Louisville veterans.

Monetary donations are very important as the fire victims begin the lengthy recovery process. Should you wish to contribute, checks should be made out to American Legion Post 119 with “Donation to Post 111” in the subject line.

The checks can be dropped off at the Circle 119 American Legion from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday or mailed to Post 119, P.O. Box 127, Estes Park, CO 80517. Post 119 is collecting the donations and will send one large check to Post 111. Upon receipt, the administration there will disperse the funds where they are needed most.

Post 119 recognizes that after a tragic event like the Marshall Fire, the desire to help is immediate, but the organization plans to continue its support as the needs of the victims change. In the future, Post 119 will continue to offer the community opportunities to make a difference in the lives of Louisville’s impacted veterans.

The Marshall Fire area has been declared a major disaster area, which makes federal funding available to those impacted by the disaster. It also opens eligibility for The American Legion’s National Emergency Fund (NEF) and The American Legion Auxiliary’s Emergency Fund (AEF).

The NEF is available to help American Legion posts, their members, and Sons of The American Legion members, who have been affected by natural disasters.

The AEF is a national grant assistance program that provides temporary emergency assistance to eligible members of the American Legion Auxiliary who have endured significant financial setbacks as the result of an act of nature or personal crisis.

The NEF provides up to $3,000 for

American Legion and Sons of The American Legion members with an active membership who have been displaced due to damages to their primary residence, and up to $10,000 for posts that have been damaged by a natural disaster and whose programs and activities within the community are impacted. The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center hosts a monthly Partnership Network meeting with area nonprofit leaders. At this meeting, Denise Lord, Executive Director of the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP) announced a new partnership with the Front Range Community College (FRCC) Police Academy.

Lord explains the development of this new partnership: “EVRJP was invited to present to the Front Range Community College Law Enforcement Academy Advisory Board about including restorative justice in their academy. Captain Pass and I presented to them over the summer, and the Board voted unanimously to include restorative justice in their curriculum, beginning in the fall 2021 academy. Despite their calendar and course already being mapped out, they found time to fit us in! Captain Pass and I were then invited back to teach that class on November 29th, 2021. To our knowledge, this is the first time that restorative justice is being included in an academy here in Colorado. We've already set a date to teach a class on restorative justice with the next set of FRCC cadets in March 2022.”

As law enforcement officers are increasingly recognized for their role in “front line” work with conflict resolution, restorative justice practices become an increasingly important part of law enforcement training.

MEDICINE FOR THE SOUL

JESUS STILL HEALS TODAY

It was the tenth anniversary of the collapse of the twin towers. I just stepped off of Royal Caribbean's “Freedom of the Seas” cruise ship. As I stepped on to the walking deck, I felt a stab in my spine.

As I flew back home, each day the pain increased until two weeks later, in the morning, I passed out in the bathroom.

The next three days were spent in the emergency room. Pain was off the charts. My right knee had swollen so I couldn’t walk. I was forced into a wheelchair, given heavy doses of pain meds and Doctors said they didn’t know what was causing it, but there was inflammation in my blood.

Over the next two months, I had cat scans, blood tests, MRI’s, etc. Finally, I was sent to an Arthritis specialist who diagnosed me with Inflammatory Arthritis. I was put on 500mg of Indomethacin, morning and night. It only dulled the pain. Every joint became inflamed, even my hair hurt to comb it. I was unable to work. Unable to use my right leg. My wife pushed me around in a wheelchair.

My doctor didn’t have much hope for my future, but I knew this was not who I was.

Fast forward, we moved to Kansas to pastor a church. I received Pastors Mark and Alice Wettengel a package in the mail from Pastor Linda Cahill. Inside was 4 pages Sunday Service at 10 am of healing confessions from a man named Charles Capps. He said Wednesday Bible Study at 7 pm God’s will was to heal and here was the medicine I was to take Streaming every day till I was healed. I began to speak these healing confes- @facebook.com/EstesParkInternationalChurch sions from the Word of God every morning. The symptoms grew worse. By July 2012, the medicine was affecting my stomach and liver. So I increased my confessions to two and three times a day, just like taking my medication.

By mid August, I woke up one morning realizing I wasn’t in as much pain. That day I knew the Word of God was changing my DNA. Over the next year and a half the Arthritis began to drain out of my body until it finally left. I have been healed by the power of God’s Word. Today, I can do anything that anyone else can do. I encourage you, if you're dealing with a sickness or disease, you too can come out of whatever you're in.

Remember when your parents would talk about, or write to, or visit people they’d been friends with since foreverago? We couldn’t imagine having friends who went that far back. Yet today I am mentioning a very good friend who has been in my inner circle for more than 30 years. Kris and I met on a hike when we were both single women living in Colorado Springs back in 1990. We’ve been besties ever since.

One of Kris’s many special abilities is gift-giving. She has a knack of giving that one thing I didn’t know I needed, every time. For my last birthday she gave me a book. (Although Kris isn’t just anyone, anyone who gives me a book is a very good friend. Most books go to the bottom of the teetering stack next to the bed but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate them. It’s just that they each have to wait their turn, don’tcha know. Someday I’ll get them all read.) The book Kris gave me last November is not just another fourstar-rated novel. It’s a 402-page collection of brain games.

Kris knows my mom died of Alzheimer’s, and we both know Alzheimer’s is genetic. (Studies show that if you have a close relative who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, your risk of getting it increases by about 30 percent.) We’ve talked about what that could mean for my future and how I want to do all I can to stave off the disease. So Kris sent this book full of puzzles to exercise my brain, which should help it function better. (That sponge between my ears can use all the help it can get!)

To give our brains a workout, my affiliate Joe and I enjoyed doing the New York Times crossword puzzles but we were spending way too much time at it every day, so we put crossword puzzles aside for awhile. Now I do the Sudoku in the newspaper each day and after most meals, Joe and I get out the book Kris gave me and do a few pages of brain games. They started out easy and are getting more difficult the deeper we get into the book.

None has been extremely difficult (so far) but they’ve been fun and actually provided entertainment at a recent brunch we hosted (pre-Omicron and within our bubble, of course).

That brunch puzzle tested our movie song IQ. We were given a sampling of a famous song’s lyrics and we had to identify the movie from which it came. We got bonus points if we knew who wrote the song and who sang it—and super bonus points if you know the year the movie was released. I would love to share the title of my brain puzzle book but I can’t remember it. I’d look it up but I can’t recall where I put the book. And I would ask Joe, who has a memory like a steel trap, but he’s off running errands and I don’t remember when he’ll be back.

Now that the holidays are long past us, and we have finally had a healthy dose of snow, on behalf of Quota Club, I want to send a big shout out and thank you to everyone that made our Festival of Trees fundraiser such a huge success! As always, our community stepped up just like it always does, despite all the other things going on in our lives. As many of you know this was the second year, we were unable to do our Holiday Home Tour so our focus was totally on the Festival of Trees! We could not have even thought about this event had it not been for the continued generosity and overwhelming support of Karen Morris, and all the Front Desk Staff from the Estes Park Resort, and Andy Morgan from the Dunraven Inn! Thank you, guys, for your help! You and all your staff made this the best year ever!

Our trees this year were amazing and those that took the time and energy to decorate a tree for us totally out did themselves. Stop In Today!

I just returned from Texas. I was visiting Theresa, my daughter and family for two weeks. I had a great time with all the adult grandchildren and the three baby great grandsons. It was a busy fun time. Theresa kept busy working from home, cooking for the herd, and doing fun things with me. The two 2-year-olds have progressed so much since I last saw them and Benjamin, 4, is so sweet. You can actually hold a conversation with him.

We went to Houston’s Holocaust Museum one day and it was very sobering.

I have been to several such museums in Europe, and each leaves a lasting impression. It is said that history repeats itself, but I say, “never again.”

On the brighter side, Jacob, grandson, and his wife, Morgan, treated me to a fabulous brunch at a downtown restaurant. It is known for its’ frozen wine drinks. Wow, were they good…I had two of them plus eggs Benedict. After brunch we walked around the area to work off calories. There were great stores and things to buy. Houston is really a wonderful shopping mecca. I had a difficult time controlling my urge to buy. I was just too full to try anything on, that was my saving grace.

The weather has been either damp and cold or warm and sunny. Cold is 40 degrees but feels colder. When I am in Texas, I am cold most of the time because of air conditioning. I love Estes not needing that. The pool and hot tub looked inviting, but I stayed dry. Unfortunately, there were no fishing trips because of the weather.

We did eat a lot and Theresa fixed the best soup. I asked for the recipe. Hope y’all enjoy it as much as I did.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Serves 6-8 One rotisserie chicken or 2-3 large boneless chicken breasts or 3-4 thighs

cut up and browned down-save juice 6 cubes Knorr chicken bouillon 64 ounces of water 1 can of Rotel tomatoes with juice 1 can of chopped fire roasted tomatoes with juice 1 small can of chopped hatch green chilies 1 big onion coarsely chopped 3 tablespoons of chopped cilantro 2 tablespoons of chili powder 2 teaspoons of ground cumin 2 teaspoons of garlic powder Place all ingredients into the slow cooker and cook on high for about 4 hours. If you use a rotisserie chicken, I find it best to cook all of the ingredients down and then place the chopped rotisserie chicken in the last 30-45 minutes so that the chicken doesn’t get too stringy.

Optional extra ingredients that are added to the final product before serving: Fresh limes-cut up and squeezed over your bowl of soup right before you eat it.

Tortilla chips-any brand will do. These will be crushed, and the soup will be served over the chips.

Fresh avocados-sliced and placed in the bowl of warm soup Grated cheese-generally use mild cheddar or Colby Jack, sprinkled over the warm soup.

Now that I am home it will take a few days to get back into the routine of life in Estes. The snow is beautiful, especially being able to stay indoors and view our winter wonderland. There really is no place on earth I would rather live. We are blessed.

Rocky Mountain National Park’s Ranger-led Snowshoe Walks Resume This January

Over the past months, various social media accounts and newspaper articles have been focused on the topic of slash pile burning. Needed and necessary actions taken to reduce fuels left behind by the 2013 flood, the 2020 fires, the diseased, and the fallen. With the recent Boulder County Marshal fire fresh in our memory, this can be a difficult topic to digest. It all begins with following the appropriate protocol to ensure the safety of our community. To better understand the restrictions and required permits for the Estes Valley, please go to www.estesvalleyfire.org/burn-permits Weather conditions are favorable with the recent snowfall and organizations and agencies, such as the National Park

Service, are taking advantage of the weather and beginning to communicate pile burn activities. EVWC is a participant of the NOCO Fireshed Collaborative whose website lists many active NOCO slash pile burning projects and details can be found at www.NOCOFireshed.org and click the “Slash Pile Burning” project button found along the right margin of the webpage. Seeing smoke along the Front Range and in our Valley doesn't always mean dangerous fires are near. As a reminder, appropriate pile construction and weather conditions need to be in place to safely burn and it is recommended that private property owners seek workshops and training before taking on activities on their own.

An annual favorite for many park visitors, Rocky Mountain National Park’s Ranger-led Snowshoe Walks will resume this January on both the east and west side of the park. Programs will be offered weekly, as conditions allow, through March 2022.

These programs are approximately two hours long and are open to visitors age eight and older and all experience levels.

Beginning snowshoers are welcome.

There is no additional fee beyond the regular park entrance fee to participate.

On the east side of the park, beginning on Tuesday, January 18, ranger-led snowshoe walks will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. Advanced reservations are required. To make a reservation, please call 970-5861223. Reservations can be booked up to 7 days in advance. Snowshoe walks typi-

cally fill quickly, especially if the weather is forecast to be warm and sunny. Snowshoes are not provided.

Program participants will be required to bring their own or rent snowshoes outside the park.

On the west side of the park, beginning on Saturday, January 22, ranger-led snowshoe walks will be offered on Saturdays at 1 p.m. A ticket is required to participate. This no-cost ticket can be picked up on the day of the walk at the Kawuneeche Visitor Center. Snowshoes are provided for use during the guided program.

Here are five more facts about this bird universally considered “cute.”

1. Although chickadees do not stay at feeders long, quickly flying off in a

Tabs For Tough Times Update: 68 Pounds Of Tabs = Free Money

THE ALL-IMPORTANT ‘WE’ I heard about a church building built in a distant city. Being excited to serve others and share the ‘Good News’ with them they engraved this intention in the arch over the entrance. “We preach Christ crucified!” they announced, for all the community to see. They planted vines on either side of the church’s door. During months that followed, the custodian would open the door and cast water out, most often landing on the vine on the right side of the door. As a result that vine grew much faster than the other. One day someone remarked that the vine had covered one word…‘Crucified’. Since no change was made in the watering pattern, eventually the next word…‘Christ’… was obscured by the vine. Now the visible engraving read: ‘We preach’. The vine continued to grow until finally all that could be seen was the small word, ‘We’. Sadly, during the days since the church building opened, the spirit in the church had also changed. No longer was their concern about ‘others’ and sharing ‘Good News’ with them. All of their focus, in their worship and benevolent activities, was focused on ‘We’…what do ‘we’ want, what ministers to ‘us’, our feelings and our likes, often even disregarding what Christ, to whom that building had once been dedicated, ‘wanted’ or ‘laid out’ for their focus to be.

‘We’ has always been a focus of people over whom the Evil One maintains control.

In the Garden, Eve wrestled with ‘What’s in it for me?’ The ‘fruit’ looked good to the eyes, and seemed to have the ability to make one wise, so ‘we’…she and Adam…made the wrong choice…impacting all mankind since. And each of us has wrestled with the temptation to focus on ‘We’…our needs…wants…likes…when deciding how we will live.

We’ve just passed through a season when we’ve all been invited to participate in many really good causes, causes that touch and minister to the lives of so many: children, military, homeless, those afflicted by various diseases. However, just as those mailed solicitations began to dwindle we became aware of so many other needs in our world…1000 homes destroyed and families displaced in our own community, tornado destruction that shattered the lives of thousands, fires in Philadelphia and New York that took the lives of many and devastated the lives of others, a resurgence of Covid virus hospitalizations and deaths, throughout the country and world, not to mention people around us of which we are personally aware, who are hurting, struggling and in need of our concern and action. But, these will have little impact on us if our focus is on ‘We’.

Someone penned a truth in a short poem some time ago to remind those of us who might tend to be focused on the ‘we’ in our lives only. He wrote: “I took a day to search for God. I climbed the highest steeple. But God declared, ‘Go down again, I live among the people!’”

The Bible certainly says ‘Amen’ to that message. Jesus ridiculed religious people of His day, who would preach and teach ‘benevolence’ to others, without raising a finger to help those in need. His disciples, like He Himself, ‘went about doing good and healing all kinds of people.’

He reminded His followers that if they didn’t love men…friends and enemies…and show it by actions, they couldn’t love Him. So what can we do? We can’t help all…but we can…and will…help many, here are some ways. Someone says it well: “There isn’t much that I can do, but I can share my bread with you…as on our way we go. There isn’t much that I can do, but I can sit an hour with you, and I can share a joke with you, and sometimes share reverses, too…as on our way we go.

Jose Gonzales, (#3) Stats vs. Strive Prep Smart: 20 points, 9-10 FG, 2-3 FT, 3 Steals Jose had his best game of his young career on Friday night. He was able to score a career high 20 points and was a menace on the defensive end, causing a handful of turnovers. He has overwhelmingly surprised me with his play this year. As a sophomore, we have asked a lot of him to step into the starting point guard role, and he has handled it very well. His tenacious defense is a source of energy for us, and many times it leads to us getting chances to score on the offensive end. I am excited to see how he grows as a player and a leader over the next three years.

Congratulations to Alexxander Saenz, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for January 14, 2022.

At EPHS, Alexxander is on the soccer team. He is proud of the fact that he maintains a 3.7 GPA. Outside of school, Alexxander likes to go hunting. He added, “My hobby is to work on trucks. I have two sisters (one sister is my twin sister the other is younger) and two brothers, (one older and one younger). I really like being with my family. I currently work in construction on the weekends. In the future I would like to have a ranch and live in a quiet place so I can enjoy nature more.”

When asked what is his favorite place to get away, he said he loves to visit Hidalgo, Mexico.

His favorite quote is, “Every action has consequences, good or bad.”

Watch Out For Tax Scammers Sadly, identity theft happens throughout the year – but some identity thieves are particularly active during tax-filing season. How can you protect yourself?

One of the most important moves you can make is to be suspicious of requests by people or entities claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. You may receive phone calls, texts and emails, but these types of communication are often just “phishing” scams with one goal in mind: to capture your personal information. These phishers can be quite clever, sending emails that appear to contain the IRS logo or making calls that may even seem to be coming from the IRS. Don’t open any links or attachments to the emails and don’t answer the calls – and don’t be alarmed if the caller leaves a vaguely threatening voicemail, either asking for personal information, such as your Social Security number, or informing you of some debts you supposedly owe to the IRS that must be taken care of “immediately.”

In reality, the IRS will not initiate contact with you by phone, email, text message or social media to request personal or financial information, or to inquire about issues pertaining to your tax returns. Instead, the agency will first send you a letter. And if you’re unsure of the legitimacy of such a letter, contact the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

Of course, not all scam artists are fake IRS representatives – some will pass themselves off as tax preparers.Fortunately, most tax preparers are honest, but it’s not too hard to find the dishonest ones who might ask you to sign a blank return, promise you a big refund before looking at your records or try to charge a fee based on the percentage of your return. Legitimate tax preparers will make

no grand promises and will explain their fees upfront. Before hiring someone to do your taxes, find out their qualifications. The IRS provides some valuable tips for choosing a reputable tax preparer, but you can also ask your friends and relatives for referrals.

Another tax scam to watch out for is the fraudulent tax return – that is, someone filing a return in your name.

To do so, a scammer would need your name, birthdate and Social Security number. If you’re already providing two of these pieces of information – your name and birthdate on social media, and you also include your birthplace – you could be making it easier for scam artists to somehow get the third. It’s a good idea to check your privacy settings and limit what you’re sharing publicly.

You might also want to use a nickname and omit your last name, birthday and birthplace.

Here’s one more defensive measure: File your taxes as soon as you can. Identity thieves often strike early in the tax season, so they can file their bogus returns before their victims.

This document describes some signs of identity theft and provides tips for what to do if you are victimized.

It’s unfortunate that identity theft exists, but by taking the proper precautions, you can help insulate yourself from this threat, even when tax season is over.

Wildfire!

The day before New Year’s Eve, my husband and I drove down to Longmont to do some errands and take our dogs for a hike.

We thought it would be best to hike in “the valley” as the wind up here was so bad. It was a pretty day, blue skies and puffy white clouds. When we got past Lyons and to the outskirts of Longmont, we noticed a large white cloud that looked like the winds were tearing it apart. The top of the cloud was a perfect cauliflower but the bottom was grayish and filmy. It kind of looked like an undeveloped stratus cloud.

A low-lying walking path in south Longmont near the Diagonal fit our hiking needs and provided some shelter from the wind. Brewster and Ziggy were delighted to sniff out all the new dog smells. After a while, a woman biking down the path asked us if we had heard about the fire.

“What fire?” we asked. She pointed to the cloud that had taken so much of our attention. “That one,” she said. And that’s how we learned about the wildfire that would cause such devastation in Superior and Louisville. We headed back to our vehicle and turned on the radio. I think one of the things that made me realize the impact of what was happening was the local AM radio station saying they would not be leaving this story and if anyone had any information to call in. People started calling immediately. “Evacuate now!” one person said. “Don’t wait!” from another. And finally, breathlessly, “Don’t drive that way it’s packed with vehicles – go this way instead.”

We listened to the radio all the way back up the canyon, never losing the signal which was unusual. Into the house and on with the television. Of course, we were thinking of the fires that evacuated us these past couple of years. Most recently, I was reminded of how frightening it was living across from Hermit Park, seeing the smoke over the hills and reading the text updates on our phones. That day, we hitched up the travel trailer thinking we might have to evacuate when we got the word that the Kruger Rock Fire was moving fast. Bedding, a couple of days of clothing, food and the dog’s paraphernalia were thrown into “Rita” and we started down Highway 36. Déjà Vu from the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires swept over us as we left our home. Thankfully, the Kruger Rock fire did not cross Highway 36 and we were able to come home just a day later.

Looking up at our house and seeing it still standing when we returned will be an experience so many will not have because of the Marshall Fire. There will be no sigh of relief for them. They will have to look at those empty spaces where their homes were, cry for what was lost, and begin the long, painful process of rebuilding their lives. Everything, everything will have to be replaced. Their children will not have what they need for school. Their pets won’t have their beds, toys or even food.

My heart breaks for those animals that may be lost, alone, scared. And, there will be other broken hearts for those beloved pets that did not make it.

The bright spot for me in all this is hear-

ing about my neighbors, friends and community who are helping out. Giving what they can. Doing what they can. Community is such a full word at a time like this.

If you haven’t already and would like to make a difference in these people’s lives here are some ideas. Community Foundation Boulder County works with community groups to ensure that crisis support lasts as long as needed. On their website, they have a wildfire fund set up and you can click on it or send a check to them at 1123 Spruce Street, Boulder, CO 80392.

There is also a Boulder Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and if you'd like to donate money, you can visit boulderoem.com.

A couple of my friends have offered shelter by registering through Airbnb's Open Homes Program. If you'd like to donate items: Sister Carmen is accepting some food but it must be no-prep food such as granola bars, snack mixes, apples, oranges, peanut butter, bread, crackers, soups, bottled water etc. Gift cards in $100 increments to Walmart, Target, Costco, local area restaurants are also welcome. Items can be dropped off at 655 Aspen Ridge Drive in Lafayette at the East entrance during open hours only. They are currently accepting cash at www.sistercarmen.org. Anyone who wants to volunteer can go to coloradoresponds.org to learn how best to help.

And about those animals, the best way to support animals impacted by the Marshall Fire is to make a financial contribution to the Boulder County Community Foundation. When donating, note that your donation is for animal response and recovery.

What was the Estes Valley reading in 2021?

Answer: more formats and more choices than ever before. 2021 introduced the Village Catalog, uniting the collections of our public library with four school campuses. These days, you can choose a print book, a digital book, an audiobook download, along with popular movies and TV shows. One million items in all!

The trends are exciting: in 2021, you made downloadable audiobooks the most popular of all digital formats. You enjoyed books in the car, while cleaning house, and while walking your favorite trails.

The “most checked-out” lists are a fun way to see how local titles compare with national bestsellers. Best of all, the lists are a great way to explore and discover great reading and listening–as made popular by your friends and neighbors.

Whenever we’re asked, “Who chooses what’s in the library collections?” our answer is: “You do!” When you check out an item—print or digital—it’s a vote for the types of materials and topics you enjoy.

Topping the list of digital book downloads: “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah, a sweeping epic of Dust Bowl America that’s been called “a testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit.” That very same title also topped the list of audiobook downloads!

What headlined the list of top nonfiction in print? Cookbooks! You made “Occasionally eggs: simple vegetarian recipes for every season” that category’s top check-out.

Movies and music can be streamed 24/7 from the library collections. Last year, the romantic-comedy “New in Town” was the top movie. And Scottish folk musician Dougie Maclean was the top music download for a second consecutive year.

On the library shelves, DVD checkouts reflected popular recent releases: “The Crown (Season 3),” “Little Women,” “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” “The Call of the Wild,” and “Greenland.”

Don’t forget to browse the Teen Fiction section when you’re looking for a great read. Last year’s top check-out was “Shadow and Bone” by Leigh Bardugo, with renewed popularity thanks to a Netflix series. Newcomers Celebrate A Wonderful Holiday Season to Santa. On behalf of the Newcomers Club, Santa and his entourage held five “selfie” photo sessions at The Holiday Wine Festival at the Events Center, the Holiday Extravaganza at the American Legion, The Tiny Tots with Santa at the American Legion, the Visit Estes Park open house, and the NOCO Santa’s Secret Workshop where toys were given to needy families in Loveland. Two sets of Santa and Mrs. Claus life-size cutouts, one at the EP Visitor’s Center and one at the EV Community Center, were quite popular. Santa and Mrs. Claus spent two nights at the Sugar Shack in Estes Park, waving to the Polar Express Trolley as it passed by. Our community outreach efforts brought $2,500 in funds that we can use to support several non-profit groups in the town.

Newcomers worked with Rob Hinkle and Julie Klett, leadership staff with the Town of Estes Park Special Events, who said they were pleased with our presence at the Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Catch the Glow parade. Elves at these events handed out over 100 candy canes.

The Estes Park Trolley let us know that our presence waving to the riders as they toured the town looking at holiday lights, significantly enhanced the experience for the children and families who attended the Polar Express programs and the library appreciated the help that our elves provided for their setup and conducting the programs.

Another holiday highlight was designing and creating our Newcomers float for the parade. This activity brought members together and was a truly great experience. The elves who rode on the float and the elves and toy soldiers who walked in the parade were very enthusiastic, and we hope we can do this again each year.

Once again, the best part of all we did was that we had fun, we met new town folks, and we made new friends. We dis-

The Estes Park Newcomers Club’s “We Believe in Estes Park” 2021 holiday events were a great success! Over 50 Newcomers members participated in eight events for the Town of Estes Park, the American Legion, the Estes Valley Library and the Estes Valley Events Center. Our letter writing elves were, once again, very successful and we have been asked to participate in the 2022 events.

In 2021 Santa and Mrs. Claus sat in the chair and welcomed families to take selfies for over 16 hours. We received over 100 letters to Santa and our elves responded to over 90 letters that included return addresses. With the help of numerous Newcomers elves and toy soldiers we shared many poignant holiday moments, many smiles, much laughter, and we spread much joy and merriment for our wonderful community throughout the season.

Newcomers contracted with the Town of Estes Park for several activities including the Tree Lighting Ceremony, The Catch the Glow Parade, decorating the We Believe Inn and sending personal letters from Santa to children who wrote

Spanning a wide spectrum of topics and themes, this year’s Community Conversation series invites locals to come together, share perspectives, and enjoy the learning opportunities that emerge through facilitated dialogue in a small group setting. The 2022 line-up of

Living Room Conversations has just been announced.

This year’s series kicks off with a discussion on “The American Dream” on Thursday January 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library’s Wasson Room.

The program is hosted by the Estes Valley Library and the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership.

Since early in America’s history, the American Dream has represented the belief that anyone in this country, including immigrants, could make it if they worked hard enough.

Some people believe this has always been an illusion, while others

point to it as a legitimate heritage of our country. Similar differences in perspective exist today. Is the American Dream alive and well, or do the realities of today’s American economy and socio-political structure hamper certain groups of people so they cannot achieve what others might? What do you find inspiring about your personal American dream?
