From Colorado Parks & Wildlife: “It's possible that this elk's antler got injured or broken while it was growing. Antlers can get fairly deformed like this when damaged and continuing to grow.

Disease can also cause weird growth, but this is more likely due to trauma to the antler.�

Go Behind The Scenes With Citizen’s Police Academy Application deadline extended to January 23 Anyone who has ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at the Estes Park Police Department can find out by attending the 2020 Citizen’s Police Academy. This informative series of classes, sponsored by the Town’s Police Department and offered free of charge, will take place Jan. 27 - Feb. 27, 2020. Sessions take place Monday and Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Class size is limited to 30. Applications are available at the front desk of the Police Department at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave., and at www.estes.org/citizenspoliceacademy.

Applications must be received by Jan. 23, 2020.

Citizen’s Police Academy familiarizes participants with everything from constitutional law to crime scene investigation. The classes will include topics that are common among law enforcement agencies, as well as issues that are unique to Estes Park. Following graduation many academy graduates choose to continue involvement with the Police Department through its volunteer programs. However, a commitment to future volunteering is not required.

Downtown Water Main Upgrade Continues Upcoming work includes closures of Ivy Street and West Riverside Drive The Town of Estes Park’s Water Division has completed the first two phases of a downtown water main upgrade that began in October. The project, which began along Rockwell Street and within the Post Office parking lot, will now continue to Ivy Street and West Riverside Drive. The water main upgrades are necessary to increase fire protection flows to the core of downtown, including installation of three new hydrants. The upgraded main will also provide better flow for water customers located on the north end of the distribution system. No disruptions to the water system are expected during work. All dates and locations are weather- permitting and subject to change.

The final phase of the project will tentatively begin Jan. 15. This phase will require the closure of Ivy Street for approximately 10 days. Once Ivy Street reopens, there will be a full closure of West Riverside Drive to Crags Drive for all but local traffic through March, ten-

tatively. Also closed at this time will be the sidewalk and parking spaces along West Riverside Drive and in the West Riverside parking lot. Detour signage will be in place.

The Post Office parking lot is expected to fully reopen the week of Jan. 20. Temporary asphalt repairs will occur after each area reopens, with permanent repairs to follow in warmer weather.

Water Superintendent Chris Eshelman explained, “We appreciate the community’s continued patience as we upgrade the system. This project has been delayed, primarily due to the effects of weather on the system, and deeperthan-anticipated frost levels in the work zone. These are some of the pitfalls of working during the winter, while trying to avoid the busy summer season.”

Town of Estes Park dog licenses for 2020 are now available at the customer service windows at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. Licenses may also be acquired at Animal Medical Center of Estes Park at 1260 Manford Ave. Owners with dogs who reside within the Estes Park town limits are required by the Municipal Code to maintain a current dog license and a current rabies vaccination through a veterinarian.

Licenses cost $5 for each spayed or neutered dog. Licenses for unaltered dogs cost $15. Owners must provide the rabies vaccination registration number

On January 4 at 7:02 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Manford Ave. Upon arrival they arrested a 56 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with obstructing a peace officer and trespassing. He was issued a summons and later released.

On January 12 at 8:35 p.m. police were

called to a disturbance in the 1000 block of Big Thompson Ave. Upon arrival they arrested a 35 year old female from Estes Park and she was charged with distribution of a controlled substance, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and violation of a protection order. She was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

Apply For Senior And Veteran Property Tax Exemption Seniors and disabled veterans who qualify can apply for the Colorado Senior Property Tax Exemption and Disabled Veteran Property Exemption. Applications for the two separate exemptions began on January 2, 2020.

Larimer County Assessor Bob Overbeck reminds property owners to apply for the 2020 Senior Tax Exemption and Veteran Tax Exemption. Typical recipients can save $600, and possibly more.

Over 16,000 seniors currently take advantage of the exemption and often tell Overbeck the savings make a big difference in their finances.

The Senior Exemption, known as the Senior Homestead Exemption, was approved by Colorado voters in November 2000. The Colorado Legislature has again approved funding for the exemption this year. Seniors may apply for the exemption between January 2, 2020, and the July 15, 2020 deadline.

For those who qualify for both exemptions, 50% of the first $200,000 in the actual value --- or $100,000 --- of the primary residence is exempted from property tax. Once an exemption application is filed and approved by the Larimer County Assessor, it remains in effect unless a disqualifying event occurs.

The Senior Exemption is available to those who:

• Are at least 65 years of age prior to January 1 of the year of application, • Owned their home for at least 10 consecutive years prior to January 1, and • Occupied the home as their primary residence for at least 10 consecutive years prior to January 1.

Those who wish to apply for the Veteran Exemption must apply through the Department of Veteran Affairs between January 2, 2020, and July 1, 2020. The Veteran Exemption is available to those who: • Sustained a service-connected disability while serving on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States, • Were honorably discharged, and • Were rated by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs as one hundred percent "permanent and total" disabled. VA unemployability awards do not meet the requirement for determining an applicant's eligibility.

• Owned and occupied the property prior to January 1 of the current year.

The American flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. The American Legion Post 119 at Circle 119 accepts flags for disposal in this manner. You may bring them to Circle 119 after opening hours at three p.m., or put them in the large red, white and blue mailbox on the west side of the building at any time of the day or night.

Bob McCluskey Launches Campaign For Larimer County Commissioner "Now, more than ever, we need to keep Larimer local."

Former State Representative and City Council Member Bob McCluskey launched his campaign for Larimer County Commissioner District 2 today.

McCluskey stated: "Larimer County has a unique, special character that must be protected. As Denver sprawl threatens to overrun our communities and Denver politicians seek to control our lives, our economy, and our land, now, more than ever, we need to keep Larimer local. As County Commissioner, I will continue the tradition of low taxes, a strong economy, education excellence, environmental protection, and a fiscally-responsible, innovative county government."

Bob McCluskey grew up in Fort Collins, graduated from Fort Collins High School, attended college at Stanford, and then came home to run the family business, the Poudre Valley Creamery.

The Poudre Valley Creamery, along with the Loveland City Dairy, had deep ties to the Larimer County community.

The milk came from a co-op of Larimer County dairy farmers, it was processed right here in Fort Collins. And it was delivered right to the doors of families in

Estes Park, Berthoud, Loveland, Windsor, Timnath, Wellington, and Fort Collins.

Bob McCluskey worked just about every job in the family business. He worked on the loading docks, drove trucks, made ice cream, and even had a route for home deliveries. Eventually, he took over the business and ran it for nearly a decade. In the past decade, Bob McCluskey served as a co-owner in a company that recycled over a million pounds of paper each year.

Bob McCluskey served on the Fort Collins City Council and as State Representative, where he passed legislation to protect children from online predators, toughen laws against police impersonation, and strengthen local hospitals. He served as the president of the Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Board, chairman of the Poudre Fire Authority, chairman of the Colorado 4-H Youth Fund, and as a member of the Fort Collins Rotary Board of Directors. He also served on the Colorado State Methamphetamine Task Force and the Fort Collins Community Foundation Board.

Normally I am not a night owl. I like to go to bed relatively early and rise to get the worm. But as I’ve aged, my mind has developed a—well—a mind of its own. It doesn’t want to spend the dark hours sleeping. There’s a lot to think about and it wants to do its job in the wee hours when everyone else is floating about in the cloudy land of Nod. I don’t have much say in the matter. In fact, the harder I lobby for sleep, the awaker I get.

Several times a week, after only a few hours of much-desired zzzzs, I find myself lying on my back in bed, eyes wide open, staring into a black abyss, wheels spinning in my head like an upended bicycle. I hear the clock’s chime, and then 15 minutes later it chimes again. After about four rounds of that, I decide I might as well give my brain what it wants and get up, write down my worries, make lists, read, plan menus, and generally think about things in a more productive way than every-which-waybut-sleep.

We set the thermostat to 60 degrees at night which makes for really good sleeping on the nights when I do snooze.

However, getting up when the house is chilly simply furthers the awakeness factor. Because of the nip in the air I put on several layers, don socks before slippers, burrito up in a blanket, and tiptoe down to the fireplace.

Even though these black times are somewhat disruptive because I’d rather be sleeping, there is something holy about alone time in the dark. Especially when I journal under the dim light (always with pen and paper, not at a computer), the world stops spinning so fast, clarity comes, and peace settles over me.

If there is a full moon I raise one blind so we can see each other (God bless the moon and God bless me). A full moon adds an energy to the darkness which I welcome, just as I embrace the glittering stars flirting in the velvet sky.

Two particular incidents glow in my memories of darkness. The first was this past October when my affiliate Joe and I were in Israel. It was about four in the morning (Israeli time) and, unable to sleep, Joe had quietly moved to the patio of our hotel room, leaving all the lights out. I slept a little but then found myself in my wheels-spinning mode so I got up and joined him. The night was warm, we could hear wild pigs snuffling in the distance, and across the Sea of Galilee we observed the twinkling lights of Tiberius. We whispered a bit and then fell silent, turning inward to the sanctuaries of our own hearts. Our whispers, the quiet we shared, the soft animal noises in the distance, the feeling that no

one owned what we had in that moment but the two of us— all of this, wrapped up in the temperate climate and in deep darkness, was sacred.

The second glow in the darkness was in 2006 when my family gathered at a reunion cabin at the YMCA of the Rockies to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Night was well in its throes when something awakened me. I lay in the dark for awhile and listened to the sounds of slumber and then realized that my dad was up and sitting in the great room of the very large cabin, alone and in the dark. I don’t know how I knew it, but I could sense him there. I tried to imagine what he was thinking, the patriarch of his loosely-knitted family of children, in-laws, and grandchildren, gathered from across the globe to celebrate him and all he and my mom created.

Was he pleased? Wishing he could have a cup of hot cocoa? (His middle-of-thenight M. O.) Did he feel like he had finished what he was put on this earth to accomplish and now he could go—into the forever darkness of death? (He lived another 12 years.) Or was he simply replaying in his head his golf game from earlier that day?

I slid down the stairs into the great room and sat down on the couch next to my dad. We took hands and nestled side by side, absorbing each other’s warmth from shoulders down to knees. I don’t remember what we said, but I won’t forget the comfort we found in each other as we spoke in low voices that only we two shared in the hush, unable to see the protective mountains outside the window but fully aware that they surrounded us. We were father and daughter, tucked into the darkness and swaddled by the unique love that only a family shares. It was magical.

During sleepless nights, our darkest thoughts often invade our searching, often troubled minds. Yet, when we give in to it, darkness has the ability to wrap itself around us in a blanket of blessings.

This brings me to one of my favorite quotes, which I originally read in a card sent to me by my friend Chris F. during the darkest time in my life. Support The Global Women’s March Of 2020 In Estes Park on January 18th On January 21st of 2017, millions of women and allies around the world took to the streets to make themselves seen and heard, demonstrating to advance women’s human rights. The Women’s March movement has announced that on January 18, 2020, women worldwide will march yet again in the 4th Annual Global Women’s March.

Local organizers in Estes Park have planned a rally in Bond Park to support the 2020 Women’s March. The rally will be an informal, peaceful gathering of people who support the core belief of the Women’s March, which is that women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights.

The mission of Women’s March is to harness the political power of diverse

women and their communities to create transformative social change. Women’s March is a women-led movement providing intersectional education on a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for new grassroots activists and organizers to engage in their local communities through trainings, outreach programs and events. Women’s March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect.

The League of Women Voters Presents Program On The 19th Amendment And Women’s Rights January 22nd On January 22nd, the League of Women Voters of Estes Park will host Michaele Ferguson, PH.D in Political Science from Harvard University. She is the author of two books, W Stands for Women and Sharing Democracy.

She and other staff from The University of Colorado have received a Ford Foundations Grant to develop the cultivation of dialogue skills necessary for effective citizenship in diverse societies.

This year, on August 20th, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote. On January 22nd, we will learn about the heroic struggles of our foremothers as they endured beatings, imprisonment, force-feeding and condemnation from friends and families in their decades-long efforts to secure

the right to vote. As each state voted for a woman’s right to vote, the expression “voters’ rights” took on a whole new meaning.

We still have a long way to go. Today, the United States Congress has more women in Congress than ever before. Yet there are still much fewer women than men in corporate boardrooms, the courts, and politics at every level throughout the county. And in 2019, women earned just 79 cents for every dollar earned by men.

Join us on January 22nd at the Presbyterian Church of the Rockies at 1700 Brodie Ave. The meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. and ends at noon. The meeting is open to the public and free of charge.

Inaugural festival to feature Grammy Award Winner, Wynonna Judd “Roots on the RidgeTM,” a new daylong music and arts festival, has just unveiled the headliners for its line-up as well as ticket information. The inau- gural Roots on the Ridge festival is set for Saturday, May 16, 2020, at the Estes Park Events Complex.

Headlining the inaugural Roots on the Ridge Festival is country music legend, Wynonna Judd. Wynonna’s 34 year career has been recognized with 14 number one hits, nine CMA awards, and five GrammysTM. Wynonna and her band, The Big Noise, led by her husband and drummer, Cactus Moser, released their debut album in 2016 to critical acclaim.

The line-up also includes Nashville’s alt-country singer/songwriter Ruston Kelly and Wyoming’s own, Chancey Williams and his “Younger Brothers Band.”

Ruston is in the midst of a landmark year following the release of his full-length debut album, Dying Star. The album includes the single Mockingbird which was nominated for Song of the Year by the Americana Music AssociationTM. Chancey’s 2017 album, Echo, was awarded the Album of the Year at the Rocky Mountain Music Awards.

The day-long festival also includes a line-up of Front Range favorites, including Estes Park’s own, Chain Station. Additional acts will be announced over the next few weeks.

Doors open at 11 a.m. with a full day of music and entertainment. The Roots on the Ridge Festival will also feature local

artisans and interactive exhibits that showcase the talent and creativity of the Estes Park community. In addition, Roots on the Ridge has partnered with local not-for-profit, the Estes Arts District, and a portion of ticket sales will be donated to help support their mission of cultivating the arts for the betterment of the Estes Park community.

Both VIP and General Admission tickets go on sale Thursday, January 16th at 10 a.m.

Sign Up For Beer Bound 5K Run March 28, 2020 Join us for the second annual Rock Cut Beer Bound 5k! This fun run will be all about enjoying spring in the mountains, hanging out with good friends, and of course, a beer at the end!

The race will take place starting and ending at Rock Cut Brewing Company.

We'll have staggered starts for runners and walkers, with the first at 11 a.m. and the second just a few minutes later. The beginning of the course follows Moraine Avenue and will feature gorgeous views of the Continental Divide as you run west toward Rocky Mountain National Park. At Marys Lake Road, you'll turn south and head up a moderately-steepbut-short hill to Riverside Drive (keep an eye out for wild turkeys!). Take another left to go east on Riverside Drive and run near the Big Thompson River on your downhill descent back to the brewery.

Pre-registration is $18/person; race day registration is available at $25/person.

Rocky Mountain National Park Christmas Bird Count A Great Success The 2019 Christmas Bird Count, or CBC, was held on January 4th 2020. A CBC can be held any day that is either 10 days before Christmas Day, Christmas Day itself, or 10 days after Christmas Day. In the past the Christmas Bird Count was held before Christmas. However, when we did this, we had very few participants. Therefore, we decided to have the count after Christmas to insure we would have enough participants to cover the entire count area.

The count begins on the count day at 12:01 a.m. and continues until 11:59 p.m. that night. We did not have anyone count that entire time; however, we did have 35 participants counting that day, mostly from 8:00 a.m. till noon.

The count area is a 15-mile circle that centers in Estes Park. This year, the count circle is divided into 29 different sections, some inside the national park, some in Estes Park and still others, both south and east of town.

The participants found 56 species and counted 4307 individual birds. The high lights included a Lewis’s Woodpecker, which was a first for the count, a Dusky Grouse, a Northern Pygmy-Owl, a Blue Jay, a Bufflehead (which is a duck), a Cooper’s Hawk, a Merlin, an American Kestrel and a single Canyon Wren.

Participants also counted a record number of Red Crossbills (471) and large numbers of Mountain Chickadees (447), Pygmy Nuthatches (508) and RedBreasted Nuthatches (313).

Birds that were missing from the count included Eurasian Collared Dove, Evening Grosbeak, Gray- crowned and

Black Rosy-Finches, cedar and Bohemian Waxwings, Northern Goshawk and Wilson’s Snipe.

Antiques Roadshow Reveals Estes Park Event Will Be Held At The Stanley Hotel!

Stay Close to Family and Friends For Infusion Services

You don’t have to travel down the hill for your infusion treatment. Estes Park Health has a comfy chair, in an intimate setting, with dedicated infusion nurses ready to help you with your treatments.

The Infusion Clinic is open Monday Representative Amy Scott will be at the Country Market this Saturday, Jan 18 from 11-3pm through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and provides almost all outpatient infusion services like blood products, chemotherapy products, antibiotics, supplements and IV fluids. At this time they do not provide dialysis.

Jasper Welter, Outpatient Infusion RN, has been with Estes Park Health for two years. She loves the community that is created with her patients who support each other through their treatments.

“Friendships are developed between our patients that come for infusion services.

Many come at the same time and on the same day, so they create a bond and support each other. We work with patients from UCHealth Cancer Center Harmony Campus and Cancer Care & Hematology Clinic, Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, UCHealth Primary Care (Timberline Medical Center) and National Jewish Health.” Jasper shares, “One of the really great things about getting care here is that if your appointment runs into lunch time, we’ll feed you and the food is really, really good!”

Cathy Martin is a Medical Assistant for infusion services. “We really are a supportive, healing environment here. Our patients do not feel isolated and because we are in their community, friends and

family can easily stop in for all or a part of their treatment. Our patients will always see either Jasper or Sarah Fritz, Outpatient Infusion RN, and I think that helps ease the tension during their treatment.”

One special bonding moment came when three patients were in for treatment. During their conversation one of the patients shared that when they were getting their services down the hill, the infusion center had a bell to ring. The ringing of the bell celebrated that a patient had completed all of their prescribed treatments. Alice Schwartz mentioned that she had a bell and has since donated it to the Medical Surgical unit.

The bell was carefully restored to its full beauty by the Estes Park Health Facilities team, a wonderful poem was engraved on a plaque, and the bell was recently hung in the Infusion Clinic.

Cathy was happy to report that one of our patients has had the opportunity to ring the bell already. Cathy shared, “The top of the bell has a bird in flight, and I think that is very inspirational. When our patients are done with their treatment it is an opportunity for them to soar in this new chapter of their life.”

The Infusion Clinic does not take walk-in appointments but can often accommodate same day appointments.

Seeking Artists For 2020 Art Market Art Market 2020, sponsored by the Art Center of Estes Park, will be held again this year in Estes Park, Colorado over the Memorial Day Weekend. This beautiful show in Bond Park is known as the kickoff to the summer season in Estes Park.

Art Market will host over 90 vendors showing and selling fine art. THE RIGHT SPIRIT FOR THE NEW YEAR…TO BE A BROTHER LIKE THAT As we continue on in this New Year it is always good to challenge ourselves to make it a very special 2020. One way to do this is by imitating the spirit of those described by others as being models of kindness and thoughtfulness. I found one such story in the book, Baskets of Silver, written by Roy Angell. He tells about a friend who said, “Roy, I’ve got to tell you about my Christmas! It was the greatest I’ve ever had!” Before Christmas the man’s wealthy brother had given him a new, very expensive, car. He was thrilled. A couple of days before Christmas, as he left his office to get into his new car, a young boy, obviously from a poorer family, approached. As the man fit the key into the car door lock, the boy asked, “Mister, is that your car?” The man told him it was. “What did it cost you?” asked the boy. “Why, it didn’t cost me anything. My brother gave it to me.”

“You mean,” said the boy, “Your brother give it to you and it didn’t cost you nuthin’?”

“That’s right,” smiled the man, “My brother give it to me and it didn’t cost me nuthin’.” The boy thought for a moment. Then he said, “I wish…” The man just knew what he was wishing…that he had a brother who would give him a car like this. But the boy surprised him. “I wish I could be a brother like that.” “What’d you say?” asked the man in astonishment. “I said,” repeated the boy, “I wish that I could be a brother like that.”

The man was ashamed, having not sensed that the boy could harbor such unselfish thoughts. “l’lI tell you what,” said the man, “Why don’t you get in and I’ll take you for a ride in it.”

“Oh, I couldn’t do that, I’d get the seats dirty.” The man laughed, “You might be dirty on the outside, but you’re mighty clean inside. You’ll do my car good. Hop in.” The boy got in, eyes big with wonder, as he saw the leather seats and flashy dash board.

As they cruised along, the boy turned to the man and said, “Mister, would you mind driving to where I live?” The man smiled. He knew what he wanted…family and friends to see him get out of a big new car like this. “Sure,” said the man. The boy’s directions took them to a tenement building in an older part of the city. When he parked, the boy jumped out. “Would you please wait here a minute? I’ll be back in a jiffy.” The boy disappeared up the stairs. The man waited, smiling. He knew what he wanted… someone to see the nice car he had ridden in.

Shortly, the boy came down, carrying a younger boy whose legs seemed to hang uselessly from his hips. He sat the boy on the lower step, pointed to the car and said, “There it is, Buddy, just like I told you. His brother give it to him for nuthin’. And when I grow up I’m gonna give you one just like it.”

The man climbed out of the car, ashamed that he had misjudged the young man again. “So this is the reason you want to be a brother like that?” “Yessir,” said the boy. “You see, I go down to the store and look in the windows and try to remember all the pretty things there, but I can’t tell him about them very well. But someday I’m gonna give my brother a car so he can go see them for himself.”

“Tell you what,” said the man, now humbled and very touched, “we’re not going to wait until then. I’m going to take you both in the car and we’ll go see those things today, and I’m going let you each pick out anything you want. I’m buying” And he did, along with a Christmas tree and many other presents. The man finished his story with his face aglow. “It was the greatest Christmas I’ve ever had!”

By the end of 2020, I hope that you and I will become ‘a brother like that’. If we do, it will be the greatest year we’ve ever had. May your New Year be blessed…and a blessing, to your family and all you know.

Rotary Awards Matching Grants To 20 Nonprofits

The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation rounded out 2019 by awarding grants to 20 local nonprofits. The Matching Charitable Donation Program awarded a total of $7,445 in December, to match $7,445 from club member donations.

The following nonprofits received grants: Angels Above Foundation Bright Christmas Crossroads Ministry Estes Park Health Foundation Estes Park Learning Place Estes Park Salud Foundation Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation Estes Valley Crisis Advocates Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation Estes Valley Land Trust Estes Valley Watershed Coalition Healing Waters Foundation Historic Stanley Home Foundation Nehemiah Gateway USA Pet Association of Estes Park Rocky Mountain Conservancy Salvation Army (Estes Park Unit) Shepherd of the Mountain Lutheran Church (Community Cafe) Summit Church The Duck Race serves as the primary source of the funds for the Foundation’s Matching Charitable Donation Program.

When people purchase a duck adoption and select the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation, those funds are used for

community grants.

For many years, the Foundation sponsored a community grant program that accepted applications from organizations. The Foundation then awarded grants to selected organizations.

“In 2019, the Foundation decided to sponsor a matching charitable donation program in lieu of the community grant program, ” said Foundations Grants Coordinator Jack Boatman. “The program recognizes that members of the Rotary Club of Estes Park support various local non-profits. The Foundation decided the matching charitable donation pro-

gram would be a good way to distribute funds to local non-profits. ” To be eligible for the matching charitable donation program, local non-profit organizations must be a qualified 501(c) (3) serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State.

This year, the Foundation conducted two matching charitable donations programs, one in the spring and one in the fall. The total matching donations for the year exceeded $10,000, which was distributed to 20 local non-profit organizations.

Reality – How Science & Theology Can Never Get Along & How Science & Theology Can Get Along-Part 2 of 2 two approaches to explaining and describing reality.

In “Reality” you’ll explore how randomness is the ultimate limit of understanding in science and should be regarded as holy to the theologian. This randomness also extends to how change over time comes about and how biological evolution is the special theory of evolution; in fact, everything changes over time via evolution.

In brief; Science is the best (if flawed, because people are imperfect) method to understand the physical world around us. Theology is the best (if flawed, because The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/lecture on Saturday, January 18th, 7 p.m. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley. Our talk this month is:“Reality – How science and theology can never get along. How science and theology can get along.

– Part 2 of 2” presented by John Ensworth.

This is Part 2 of John’s talk. He gave Part 1 of this topic last month.

This talk is an introduction to the topics covered in the upcoming book “Reality” (which will hit bookshelves and downloads late 2020 under the Covenant Publishing label) by John Ensworth. Public feedback and discussion is strongly encouraged at the end of the presentation.

“Reality” is an investigation of the world around you and inside you; seen and unseen. It explores the internal concept of reality you experience, the realworld reality around you, and the place of the supernatural reality that is the subject of many Christian sermons.

You will see reality from two very different points of view; that of the scientist and that of the theologian. It is an exploration of the firewall that separates those

Web and at large education conferences.

He introduces the products and makes sure they are scientifically accurate and appropriate for the intended audience.

In the 90s Mr. Ensworth was a masters’ student and a PhD candidate in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He teaches physics and mathematics at a number of online universities. He earned undergraduate degrees in physics and astronomy, and geography and meteorology with an emphasis in math and computer science.

The observatory is just north of the high school at 1600 Manford Ave. Park in the teacher’s parking lot adjacent to the observatory. The doors will open at

7:00 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The presentation, including a question and answer period, lasts about an hour. After the presentation, weather permitting, we will look through the 16 inch dome telescope at various celestial objects.

What’s Going On At The Legion These Days? The REAL Scoop Estes Park’s American Legion Post 119 is growing and changing in positive ways, heading into its second century with prospects for a very bright future!

Post 119’s first recorded meeting minutes were on May 10, 1920… and thus we are looking to May 2020 as a month of great Centennial Celebration.

This is despite the rumors you might have heard in recent weeks… rumors that the Legion sold its building, and that there surely are dire consequences from that sale. As in most rumors, there are some elements of truth in the story, but the reality is that the changes that have taken place bode very well for the future of American Legion Post 119 and its partners.

In recent years, Estes Park’s American Legion Post has suffered from some of the trends witnessed in national Veterans organizations. Contrary to what some people think, the American Legion is not a governmentsponsored organization. Decreasing membership and decreasing patronage of the social club (i. e., less alcohol consumption… not really a bad thing!) have undermined traditional financial foundations for these organizations. Building maintenance has suffered, and there have been times when the future of ongoing operations looked rather bleak.

However, Estes Park’s Legionnaires are a talented, resourceful and stubborn bunch, and they were not going to give up easily. It was time to re-think business strategies to restore Post 119 to a healthy and vibrant organization. That

including finding ways to restore Post 119’s building, an historical icon on the corner of Highways US 36 and CO 7 that was built to house the Bureau of Reclamation’s administrative offices for the Colorado-Big Thompson Water Project. Over the years, the Legion building has served as a community center for Estes Park, housing scouting and youth activities as well as community gatherings throughout the years.

One of the challenges for a Legion Post is that its IRS-designated tax-exempt status is as a 501(c) 19 organization.

So yes, the Legion Post 119 membership voted and sold their building to the Foundation for the sum of $1, with the accompanying deed restriction that if the Foundation ever decided to sell the building, the Legion Post 119 would have first rights to repurchase the building for $1. Now the Foundation is able to apply for grants to support capital needs for the building, and therefore is able to open an improved and still improving facility to the entire Estes Park community.

Congratulations to Sydney Parks, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for January 17, 2019.

School activities Sydney enjoys being part of are being a member of the yearbook staff and doing tech for theater productions. She has received the ROARS Award (for being Respectful, On-Time, Attentive Responsible & Safe.)

When she’s not at school she enjoys hiking with her family and swimming whenever she can. She has two dogs and is the youngest of her siblings. Sydney has a twin brother and another brother is in the grade above her.

Sydney’s favorite quote is: “If you aren’t going all the way, why go at all.� She likes this quote because it helps her to get motivated to get through the day and do her school work.

After high school, Sydney plans to become an author. She has always enjoyed writing, but now she’s considered it a possible profession. She has also taken forensic studies into consideration.

EVICS Now Designated BBB Accredited Charity The EVICS Family Resource Center is proud to announce that they have been designated a BBB Accredited Charity by the Better Business Bureau Serving Northern Colorado and Wyoming.

EVICS met all 20 BBB standards for Charity Accountability, intended to assist the public in making sound giving decisions and to foster public confidence in charitable organizations.

“We are thrilled to be recognized by the BBB,” says Nancy Almond, EVICS Executive Director. “BBB Charity Accreditation demonstrates our commitment to excellence and assures our donors that their gifts are handled responsibly and ethically.”

Special Presentation: Machu Picchu has become one of the main wonders of the world attracting thousands to visit. The Art Center is pleased to have Chris Switzer share her knowledge and experiences of this ancient wonder. The public is welcomed to attend this free presentation on January 17th from 6:30-9 p.m. Chris will be sharing some of her stories and slides and is bringing a number of books, maps and special textiles from the area to show as well. This will be a wonderful opportunity to spend a cozy, educational evening with friends at the Art Center. Refreshments will be provided.

Which Plastics Are Worth It And Who Should Decide?

Plastic originated as far back as 1856 with a plant celulose material called “Parkesine,” rechristened “Xylonite” in 1869, before becoming “Celluloid” in 1870. This final compound, liquid when heated, impenetrable when cooled, saved the lives of herds of elephants subject to the hunt for ivory to make billiard balls.

Early in the 20th Century, a moldable material called “Bakelite” was perfected.

Bakelite truly was a form of recycling since it mixes formaldehyde with phenol, a coal waste product. However, Bakelite is not recyclable. Once set, it is permanent. It cannot be reclaimed by heat, pressure, or solvents. It was quickly adopted by industry but the real secret to its popularity was its application into daily life. Every household soon had a plastic comb.

The 20s and 30s developed nylon (stronger than silk), polyethylene for packaging, followed by polyester and polypropelene and others, eventually leading to the fabulous properties of Teflon and Kevlar. During WWII the US Army found lightweight plastics to be invaluable and many factories were created to fill that need. At the end of the war the consumer market was necessarily flooded with strong, lightweight, colorful, and inexpensive products. Consumption became a national duty.

As early as the 1990s, there was already a movement toward recycling to lengthen the duration of our landfills.

But each type of plastic requires different levels of heat, sometimes different solvents to return them to usable pellets for remanufacture. In Colorado, Housebill 89-1300 established voluntary labels signifying the type of plastic and authorized the development of a recycling program. In 1993, this bill was amended by the General Assembly (93-1389) to prohibit local communities from limiting the use of plastics. No enforcement was

attached to this measure. At the same time, counties, cities, and towns who attempt to levy fees or to pass outright bans on various plastic types or products do face the possibility of a court challenge. This “ban of bans” is currently under reconsideration.

Today, we realize that an over abundance of plastics are, in other ways, impregnating our world: our oceans, our rivers, our lands, our fish and our wildlife. Its minute particles have even been found in human bodies. Plastic has its place. Imagine a return to lead plumbing pipes or the world without such amenities as plastic electrical parts, a synthetic substitute for shellac, polyester, nylon, Teflon, Kevlar, or plastic appliances, TVs, computers, combs, and innumerable other products. While digital photography has minimized the need for photographic film, the medical applications are immeasurable, and materials for the new 3D computer technology would be a significant loss.

But most bans or fees are directed at the one-time use market. Nothing is “free.” Costs, both ecological and financial, of single use items are, perhaps unnoticeable without searching, but they are there. The 1989 and 1993 laws protect the development, sale, and use of plastic storage bags (try washable silicone), plastic packaging, plastic coated paper plates and bowls, plastic straws, plastic utensils, plastic shopping bags, beverage containers, plastic “sticks” for cotton buds and lollypops, polystyrene foam take-home boxes, peanuts and other packing pieces, meat trays and egg cartons, etc. Which ones do you find worth the contamination of our trails, rivers, oceans, street, trees, sealife, and elk, as well as humans? Which ones are too dangerous to preserve? And should each community have the right to make that decision themselves?

Eyewitness Account Plus Scavenged Elk Carcass Indicates Likely Presence Of Multiple Wolves In Northwest Colorado Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say an eyewitness report of six large canids traveling together in the far northwest corner of the state last October, in conjunction with last week's discovery of a thoroughly scavenged elk carcass near Irish Canyon - a few miles from the location of the sighting strongly suggests a pack of gray wolves may now be residing in Colorado.

According to the eyewitness, he and his hunting party observed the wolves near the Wyoming and Utah borders.

One of the party caught two of the six animals on video.

"The sighting marks the first time in recent history CPW has received a report of multiple wolves traveling together," said CPW Northwest Regional Manager JT Romatzke. "In addition, in the days prior, the eyewitness says he heard distinct howls coming from different animals. In my opinion, this is a very credible report."

After learning about the scavenged elk carcass, CPW initiated an investigation which is still ongoing. At the site, the officers observed several large canid tracks from multiple animals surrounding the carcass. According to CPW wildlife managers, the tracks are consistent with those made by wolves. In addition, the condition of the carcass is consistent with known wolf predation. (Photos below) "The latest sightings add to other credible reports of wolf activity in Colorado

over the past several years," said Romatzke. "In addition to tracks, howls, photos and videos, the presence of one wolf was confirmed by DNA testing a few years ago, and in a recent case, we have photos and continue to track a wolf with a collar from Wyoming’s Snake River pack.

Romatzke says from the evidence, there is only one logical conclusion CPW officials can make.

"It is inevitable, based on known wolf behavior, that they would travel here from states where their populations are well-established," he said.

"We have no doubt that they are here, and the most recent sighting of what appears to be wolves traveling together in what can be best described as a pack is further evidence of the presence of wolves in Colorado."

Romatzke adds CPW will continue to operate under the agency's current management direction.

"We will not take direct action and we want to remind the public that wolves are federally endangered species and fall under the jurisdiction of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. As wolves move into the state on their own, we will work with our federal partners to manage the species," he said.

The public is urged to contact CPW immediately if they see or hear wolves or find evidence of any wolf activity.

During the next several months, the candidates will discuss issues that should greatly interest you as a citizen. But as an investor, how concerned should you be with the results of the presidential and congressional elections?

Maybe not as much as you might think.

At different times, the financial markets have performed well and poorly under different administrations and when different parties have controlled Congress.

And after all the votes are counted, outcomes in the investment markets can be unpredictable. Consequently, you’ll be helping yourself greatly by not making big moves in your portfolio in anticipation of new legislation or political moves down the line.

Of course, that’s not to say that nothing emerging from Washington could ever have an impact on your investment decisions. For example, if a future president and Congress decide to change the capital gains tax rate, it could affect some of your choices, such as which stocks and stock-based mutual funds you should buy, and how long you should hold them.

Overall, though, your investment results will ultimately depend on actions you can take, including these: • Making changes for the right reasons – While the results of an election may not be a good reason to make changes in your investment portfolio, other factors can certainly lead you to take steps in this direction. For one thing, as you get closer to retirement, you may want to shift some – though certainly not all – of your investment dollars from more growth-oriented vehicles to more conservative ones. Conversely, if you decide, well in advance, that you might want to

retire earlier than you originally thought, you may need to invest more aggressively, being aware of the increased risk involved.

• Following a long-term strategy – In pretty much all walks of life, there are no shortcuts to success – and the same is true with investing. You need to follow a long-term strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, and you need the patience and perseverance to keep investing in all markets – up, down and sideways.

• Avoiding mistakes – Many people think of an investment mistake as failing to “get in on the ground floor” of some company that ultimately grew to huge proportions. But it’s pretty hard to become an early investor in companies like these, many of which start out as privately held businesses without any stockholders. Furthermore, companies with shorter track records can be much more unpredictable investments. However, you do want to avoid some real mistakes, such as chasing “hot” stocks.

By the time you hear about them, they may already be cooling off, and they might not even be appropriate for your needs. Another mistake: failing to diversify your portfolio. If you only own one type of asset, such as growth stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn. Spreading your dollars over a wide range of investments can help lower your risk exposure. (However, diversification by itself can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses.)

After Election Day, regardless of the outcome, you can help keep your portfolio on track by not playing politics with it.

Learn About Butterflies And Tour The School’s Bee Exhibit The library is hosting a special program to explore the life history and habits of the monarch butterfly. The talk will be led by Bill Ciesla, a Forest Health Specialist with Colorado State University Extension’s Master Gardener Program.

Ciesla will discuss the migration patterns of butterflies and factors that have led to the endangering of the species.

The presentation will also briefly review another migratory butterfly, the painted lady.

As part of the event, participants will also be able to tour the bee exhibit at the elementary school and hear from local high school students who are working on efforts related to the school district’s Zero Waste project.

This 90-minute program titled “The Fascinating Life of the Monarch Butterfly” will take place on Wednesday, January 22 at 10 a.m. at the Estes Park Elementary School. Advance registration is necessary and may be done online at estesvalleylibrary.org. While the program takes place at the school, it is for adults, and homeschool high school students are also welcome.

Wednesday’s program is part of the 2020 One Book One Valley series, based around themes of Barbara Kingsolver’s novel “Flight Behavior.” A full list of this month’s programs may be found on the library website or in the current edition of the Library’s Programs and Services Guide.

The Numbers Are In: Most Checked-Out Items Of 2019 What was the Estes Valley reading and watching in 2019?

The answers yield great ideas for books, movies and more that you too might want to add to your list. The answers also help us in building library collections that reflect your needs and interests. Every check-out is a vote for the types of materials and topics you enjoy.

This week, we’re happy to announce highlights from the Most Checked-Out Items of 2019 at the Estes Valley Library.

In the New Nonfiction category, David McCullough topped the list with “The Pioneers: the heroic story of the settlers who brought the American ideal west.”

Leading the New Fiction category was David Baldacci’s thriller “Redemption,” followed by Michael Koryta’s “If She Wakes,” and “The Big Kahuna” by longtime favorite Janet Evanovich.

Among travel books, top destinations were Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Georgia and the Carolinas. An exciting itinerary!

Most popular subjects: vegetarian and Instant Pot cooking, along with hiking and adventuring, spanning from mountaineering to birding.

Topping the list of most checked-out Cloud Library Digital Books was none other than Barbara Kingsolver’s “Flight Behavior” this year’s One Book One Valley selection. Followed by “The Silent Patient,” a page-turning psychological thriller by Alex Michaelides.

In the Audiobooks category, Lee Child’s mystery “Past Tense” had the most checkouts, joined in the digital OverDrive category by “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle,” aptly described as “Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day.” We support local book clubs with kits

containing 12 copies of a single title. Most read in 2019: “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” “Lab Girl,” and “Where’d You Go, Bernadette.”

Top movie checkouts of 2019 were “Downsizing,” “Ocean’s 8,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Front Runner,” and “The Bookshop.”

From the huge inventory of music in the library’s hoopla database, favorite checkouts were movie soundtracks: “Coco,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Moana,” and “The Greatest Showman on Earth.”

What are kids reading? Top storybooks were “Fire Engine No. 9,” “I’m a Dirty Dinosaur,” “Knock Knock” and “A Dog Named Doug.”

Your library checks out lots of non-traditional items too. Most popular in the “Library of Things:” Ukuleles, Critter Cams, and Watt Meters for home appliances.

Maybe these popular items will inspire your next medley of library check-outs.

Oratorio Rehearsals To Begin The Oratorio Society of Estes Park, under the direction of Robert Charles Howard, will perform a spring concert Friday, March 14th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 15th at 3 p.m. Margie Patterson will be our guest soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. We will also play Schubert’s 8th Symphony (unfinished) and one short work TBA. Orchestra rehearsals will begin on January 20 from

7-9 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies (PCCR). Subsequent Monday rehearsals will go from 7:30 to 9:00. Chorus rehearsals begin Monday night January 27 from 5:45 to 7:15 also at the PCCR. Singers and string players are especially welcome.

Wind River Winds and Rocky Recorders Two local music ensembles will perform this Saturday, January 18th at 3 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Drive. The Wind River Winds, a traditional woodwind quintet, will be performing music by Adrien Bathe, Maurice Ravel, Gabriel Faure, Adolphe DesLandres, and George Gershwin. Scott Anderson, Annette DeChant, Robert Keep, Susan Novy, and Melinda Workman make up the

members of wind ensemble.

The Rocky Recorders will perform music from the Renaissance by Michael Praetorius, Christian Erbach, and Georg Phillipp Telemann. Members of the ensemble include Marti DeYoung, Christi, Fjare, Robert Keep, Steve Pearson, and Mark Richards.

The performance is free and a reception will follow the concert to meet the musicians.

Rebel-Pop A Great Success!

To The Editor: The room was swirling with lights and the air was filled with giggles, laughter and some of the best ambient music you could imagine. There wasn’t a square inch of that room that wasn’t dripping in art and its proud artist. The Wheel had transformed into a real, honest to god gallery and immersive art experience, even the patrons looked simply gorgeous. Everyone was there shining with creativity; there was the whimsical, the terrifying, the elegant nudes, the new artist debuts and the provocative. There were live creations being constructed before your very eyes. Hell, even I took a stab at some issues that are only whispered about in our town… the loop, jibber jabber, Eastes and Westes Park. I wanted this to be an Estes-centric show and it most certainly was. It was true, it was actually happening, REBEL POP! was officially a success. Yet, it goes without saying that it took a tiny village to make it happen with such a limited amount of time. I want to take this moment of reflection and pause to thank everyone who came together to create such an incredible and memorable event. First I want to extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to The Wheel and also Kim Carlson who, not only waived the vendor’s fees so a variety of artist could be involved, but was also an incredible cheerleader and support to me.

Without their backing and trust Estes would not have been exposed to so

many new artists and talents. She let us take the reins and create a space that had not been done there quite like that before. I also want to take a moment and thank each and everyone one of the artists who, not only showed up, but brought their “A” game. Thank you to Torae Reid whose artwork delighted and warmed so many people (I would like to mention that she also juggled a few balls helping with the music and sound system and archiving through photos all the while keeping a brilliant, sparkling smile on her face) welcome home my dear. To Betty Horschler, every time I would pop over to explore her work I discovered something new, it was like being Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Her creations are full of magic and enchantment. To Mark Volkman who not only introduced Estes to the world of horror monsters but also created and sculpted all night long. He is truly an incredible talent that shared with all of us; his work is jaw dropping at the very least. Mark will be teaching classes this coming summer and will be exciting and stimulating young minds throughout Estes. The Redrum crew was such a wonderful and unique addition, thank you. Thank you Scary Mary Orton for sharing the love, passion and talent for your love of pets, Wet Nose prints will be quite a success with anyone who wants to display their affection for their fur baby… or scaled baby. A quick plug here, Scary Mary is now doing profes-

sional pet sitting called Barker’s Hill for all of your long day or vacation needs, fair warning though, they will be spoiled rotten. A special thank you to Erin Presley-Froemke (yes, that Presley) with Presley-i photography, she made her inaugural debut with some of the most interesting, touching, and beautiful work ever created in that medium. Mark my words; keep your eye on this young lady.

Working with the students of Eagle Rock School has been one of the highlights in my heart ever and these young adults did not disappoint whatsoever. Cindy Elkins, you truly outdid yourself by not only selecting these young artists that you believe in, but for also being one of the best friends I could ever ask for. This incredible woman stayed up with me quite a few nights until the wee hours of the morning teaching me and creating little projects for the show. She also walked me through a meditation to calm my nerves the morning of and gave me the best pep talks to ground me and help me believe in myself, thank you. By her side was Barbra Boyer Buck who really stepped up to the plate and helped make this event a home run. My dear, you were festive, fun, documented, made incredibly valuable suggestions and truly added to the night’s festivity. Speaking of fun, one could change the spelling to Gale Baniak, aka Dude Mom. Gale provided some of the hardiest laughs of the evening with her talents in beard decorating and all around fanciful attire; you are truly a gem and a healthy heartbeat in our little town. Another special thank you to Craig Rastun who stepped up last minute and displayed his self-taught art that would make your head spin, his talent is just what makes our town so unique. If you are ever in the need for a DJ who can set the tone for your event, look no further than Sam Hankin, Sam is a young local who provided the contemporary ambience which was perfect for the gallery. There was head bopping, light dancing, and still room for conversation with the guests. You are amazing and know your stuff, thank you. Nick Wagner, wow, just wow! Nick made his musical and visual art debut and simply slayed it. His hit song “Party People” really seemed to fit the theme for the evening. Get ready Nick, Estes Park is falling in love and I predict you and your skills will be quite busy this summer. To one of my absolute dearest friends, Mark Serviss, the man behind the scenes, thank you! Without Mark the gallery nooks and displays would not have happened. Mark volunteered his time and dedication to making every artist stand

out. He ran errands, setup, broke down, moved, hustled, advertised and was an all-around fantastic friend and invaluable help. Thanks to Shane and antiShane for keeping up with the behind the bar scene and kept the libations flowing and the glasses clinking. I want to thank Bekah Blackburn with Raven’s Dark Dolls who was quite the success.

Each and every one of her creepy creations takes time, love, precision and passion. It can take her up to a week to produce just one of her art pieces; each one has a bit of her soul inside of them. I am putting Bekah towards the end of this long list because she got the most interesting, and valuable, comments of the night. Someone came up to her booth and quipped how, “her art wasn’t really ‘right’ for this town or venue” Yes!!! Success that is exactly what we wanted and desired to hear and be whispered, this is the sign that true art is being created with thought and discussion.

This leads me to my last and biggest thank you to my production partner, Jason Van Tat owner of Redrum Tattoos and Piercing in town. I came to Jason on December 6th with an idea of something that I had never quite produced before.

Without even blinking he said yes and that he had produced and curated shows in his past in larger cities and was itching to get back to it and low behold we had a show just 15 days later. Jason has attended no less than three art schools and is well versed in different mediums.

What he brought, literally, to the table was such a diverse array of work that you would never guess was generated by the same artist. He can capture, create and emulate so many different emotions through various methods and styles; I am in constant awe of his diverse talents.

He held my hand, believed in me and, even better, wants to continue working with me. Our mission is to bring fine art to Estes Park spotlighting different local and out of town featured artist depending on the pop–up theme at that time.

We hope to get people talking, good, bad, ugly the flattering whatever it may be we want to provoke and excite. The goal that we share is to make Estes Park a fine art and immersive experience destination. Pirate Face Productions and Redrum will be making an exciting announcement very soon! Again, from the bottom of my grateful heart, thank you to all who were part of this incredible experience and to the people of Estes Park who came out and supported all of us.

Dances of Universal Peace February 15 The Peace Dances normally held on the 3rd Saturday of the month are postponed due to unexpected delays keeping our leaders out of state.

John Joseph Nolan

John Joseph Nolan, 72, of Glen Haven, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 10, 2020 in Loveland, Colorado. He was born on May 31, 1947 to Thomas and Theresa Nolan in Corona, New York. John graduated from St. Leonard’s High School in 1965. He went on to college and then joined the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. On October 18, 1969 he married Mary Adelaide Dexter in Queens, New York.

John made his career the military. He served in the Army for 24 years, with international tours in Germany and Honduras and several state side assignments. After serving in the military, he worked 10 years in civil service at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Denver. Once retired, John served as a board member on the Estes Valley Land Trust and joined the Estes Park Police Department Auxiliary where he continued to serve his country and his

community. During the holidays John dressed up as the Blue Santa and was able to bring joy to children, seniors and anyone who came in contact with him. Of all the wonderful ways John spent his time he most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his family.

John is survived by his wife Mary of Glen Haven, CO, his son Shaun Nolan and his wife Bobbie of Parker, CO; his daughter Lori Argo and her husband Paul of Aurora, CO; three grandchildren Brittney Argo, Cody Nolan, and Matthew Argo; his two brothers Thomas Nolan and his wife Arlene of Waldwick, NJ and Kevin Nolan and his wife Kathy of Locust Valley, NY; his sister Maribeth Nolan of Manassas, VA and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all and will be sorely missed.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. Burial took place at Fort Logan national Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer research or to the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department (GHAVFD) in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Avenue Estes Park, CO 80517.

Estes Park resident Jeff Sanders left this Earth on January 13, 2020 at 72 years old. Jeffrey Neil Sanders was born August 3, 1947 in Butler, PA. His parents were Leo and Peggy (Gilbert) Sanders. Jeff graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX with a degree in Math. He began a career with Frost Bank as a Systems Programming Analyst in 1967 spanning over 50 years. On October 31, 1997 he married his best friend, Donna Reiter, at YMCA of the Rockies. They moved to Estes Park together in 2007 as it was a lifelong goal of theirs to be together

in the mountains they loved. Jeff was a board member of The Cultural Arts Council and enjoyed railroading, hiking and travel, music (from metal to jazz), photography, history, poetry, comedy and comics as well as film. He is remembered by friends and family as an extremely intellectual, spiritual, fun-loving, kind and generous soul.

He is survived by his wife Donna of Estes Park, children Matt Sanders of Northglenn, CO and Nicole Sanders of San Antonio, TX and their Mom, Diana Sanders-Gonzalez. Also surviving are his grandchildren Brooklyn and Bailey Moore, brother Rod Sanders and his wife Judy of San Antonio and sister Carol Santos of Arlington, TX, nieces Kelly Lee-Green and Carrie Santos-Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents. A gathering to celebrate Jeff ’s life will take place at The Notchtop Restaurant on Friday, January 17th, 2020 at 5 p.m.

Everett Carl Scott -”Scotty” Force National Guard for six years. His professional life was spent mostly with what was once known as the “Telephone Company.” He started as a lineman for Mountain Bell in the 60s, was promoted to field engineer for all the FAA centers in the U.S. in the 80s and retired after 35 years from Lucent Technologies in the early 90s.

Scotty enjoyed quietly helping those around him more than anything. He was always there to lend a hand when called on and generously volunteered his time to many causes, organizations, Everett Carl Scott, known as“E.C” or friends and family throughout the “Scotty” to those who were close to years. Most noteworthy was his suphim, left this world for a more peaceful port of Boy Scout Troop 171 and the place on January 3rd, 2020 in Estes Telephone Pioneers of America. He enPark, CO. The Foundation is honored to help shape the future of students from Northern Colorado and the Eastern Plains.

We have been entrusted with funds from donors who want to make an impact on student’s lives. These scholarships are targeted by location, high school, field of study, and other criteria that reflect the passion of the donor.

There are also awards for those who may not fit the mold of the traditional college-bound student. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000.
