Join A Forum On Preliminary Flood Insurance Study And Rates Maps For Estes Park April 1 April 1 meeting will focus on properties within Town limits The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County invite community members to participate in a virtual (online) forum with Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and FEMA representatives April 1 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

CWCB and FEMA will present Preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for properties within the Estes Park town limits, as well as review the adoption process and timeline. To join and participate, find the CWCB Zoom link on the Town’s website at estes.org/floodplains. A video of the meeting will also be available for viewing later on this webpage.

The April 1 meeting will include time for asking general questions of the agencies, Larimer County staff and Town staff. In order to help address more detailed questions about specific properties, staff will be available for follow-up meetings with property owners upon request. Interested individuals are encouraged to research any property’s location on the floodplain map at coloradohazardmapping.com, by selecting “flood hazard” and entering an address. The report provides information about the draft/preliminary flood hazard area, if any, that affects a home or business. To view the current Preliminary FIRMs and FIS, visit hazards.fema.gov/ femaportal/prelimdownload. Also, the Town of Estes Park is in the process of mailing notices of this process to all properties in or near the Special Flood Hazard Area on the preliminary FIRMs. Background: After the flood of 2013, the Colorado Hazard Mapping Program (CHAMP) was established by the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) to rework floodplain data and maps. Many areas throughout Colorado, including Estes Park, were studied. In 2018 and 2019, draft results for Estes Park were released

by CWCB. On January 26, 2021, the CHAMP results were officially submitted by FEMA for Larimer County. The submittal includes both the Preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). The study results about the 1% chance (100year) storm include flood elevations and boundaries for the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).

In September, 2019, Title 18 – Flood Damage Prevention, was adopted in the Estes Park Municipal Code. Since then, the draft CHAMP maps have been the regulatory boundary for development in the SFHA. The new Preliminary FEMA maps are identical to the draft CHAMP maps for most areas of the Town. These new FIRMs reflect the best technology available for obtaining accurate hydraulic and mathematical modeling.

As a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) since May 22, 1975, Estes Park is committed to reviewing the new FEMA maps through a regulatory review process. Participation in the NFIP allows Estes Park property owners to purchase flood insurance and maintains the Town’s eligibility for hazard mitigation and disaster grant funding.

Slash Pile Burning To Occur In The Meadowdale Lane Area The Gravitas Peak Prescribed Fire Module and The Ember Alliance, with support from the Big Thompson Conservation District, are intending to conduct a slash pile burn on Meadowdale Lane near the town of Estes Park. Burning started Monday morning, March 15, 2021 and may occur other days of the week as conditions dictate. Firefighters will continue to evaluate snow conditions following the upcoming storm, but intend to take advantage of the significant snow fall.

Smoke may be visible in the vicinity of Meadowdale Lane / Hermit Park Open Space throughout the week.

Piles are only ignited under certain conditions, including staffing, favorable smoke dispersal and appropriate weather. Estes Valley Fire Protection District will be notified before any burn-

ing is done. Piles will not be ignited during high winds or without adequate snow cover. The areas are monitored after burning is completed. Public and firefighter safety is always the number one priority in burning operations. Efforts will be made to minimize any smoke impact to the surrounding community.

The purpose of the slash pile burns are to remove hazardous forest fuels after forest thinning treatments are completed. The treatments and the prescribed fire are designed to reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire to the surrounding forest and communities.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On March 8 at 12:03 a.m. police were called to the 200 block of Cleave Street where they arrested a 35 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with violation of a restraining order. She was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On March 8 at 7:32 p.m. police stopped

a 50 year old male driver from Estes Park in the 200 block of Moraine Ave. On scene, the male was arrested and transported to Larimer County Jail and charged with DUI and driving while license revoked. He was also found to be wanted on a warrant by CSP Fort Collins for failure to appear (FTA) - leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving.

Keeping nature’s events in proper perspective can, at times be problematic.

The spring snowstorm of the past week was one of the problematic times. While the media hype surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and wildfires of the past year, matched the actualities of each event, the hype for the storm (aka #Snowmageddon2021 and #Snowpocalypse) came up several feet short of reality.

Amidst the hyped up predictions for a 91-inches snowfall, had I not been aware of the Town’s Public Works Department, with a stellar record of keeping streets snow free and open to traffic, I could have easily become anxious and fearful about the fate of Estes.

Further, it helped knowing that operations manager Kevin McEachern and team—12 snow fighters, one mechanic, two back-up drivers, and administration support—were eager, and up for the challenge. The town’s snow fighter team is the result of collaboratively bringing together employees from the Town’s Public Works divisions of Parks, Streets, Fleet, and Water, Light, Communication and Events departments.

What I couldn’t know then, but do know now, is that on Sunday, during the thick of the storm, while the townspeople and I nestled away in our warm houses, snow fighters began battling the storm at 3:00 a.m. Working 12-hours shifts, they spent 275 man hours quelling the storm on Sunday. Then, on Monday, at 3:00 a.m. set out to do it again.

Several weapons of choice were at the snow fighters’ disposal include five large single axle snow plows, two F-550 snow plows, one 1-ton pickup snow plow, one wheel loader with plow, and three skid steers.

Throughout the recent operation, at any given time nine plows were clearing streets with three skid steers clearing sidewalks and trails. Each street was plowed and sanded, with approximately 100 yards of salt/sand material dispersed. Snow fighters would revisit streets often to keep intersections clear of snow and edges wide and clean.

Given the amount of snowfall during the storm, a driver could have up to a ton of snow in front of their plow blade at any given time.

Although clean-up work awaits, there’s no time like the present to thank the intrepid snow fighters for the impressive snow removal work they did on behalf of the people who live here. They are a wonderful example of the common good in action and a tribute to the government the townspeople created and support.

In addition, a heartfelt thanks are due all who stepped up to clean driveways, dug out cars and cleared the walkways of others and to the Red Cross for being available, Dollar General for offering to provide support for the snow fighters, meals-on-wheels drivers for delivering food, private snow removers, and countless others. All of these people, through their many self-less acts, yet again reveal Estes Park to be a community of caring people and a wonderful place to live and work.

As the snow melts, and Easter approaches I’ll be looking for Pasqueflowers that herald the arrival of spring.

Whenever I find one, I plan to pause, acknowledge the immense power and beauty of nature, then say a prayer of thanks for the many people who keep us safe. Doing so, I’ll strive to have hype and reality match. Please consider doing the same.

Family, friends, and American Legion members gathered last week to honor longtime Estes Park resident Jan Verschuur.

During a ceremony conducted by Post 119 Commander Loren Shriver, Verschuur was presented with a pin and framed proclamation honoring his sixty-five years of membership with The American Legion. During his career, Verschuur has served the nation both internationally and within our borders with the Department of State, the Navy, the Army, and numerous commercial endeavors. Locally, Verschuur served for many years as manager of Estes Park Memorial Gardens and is still active with organizations within the Estes Park community. He also continues to captivate everyone he meets with his enthusiasm and captivating smile.

With spring around the corner, the Colorado State Forest Service is reminding residents that late winter or early spring is the best time to prune most trees. Trees are still dormant at this time of year and, unlike in early winter, wound closure will happen sooner if pruning occurs just prior to the time new growth emerges.

Once leaf and flower buds start to expand, pruning should wait until the leaves are fully extended.

“Pruning trees during the late dormant season maximizes growth and allows the tree owner to spot problem areas and build strong structure for the long term,” said Kamie Long, supervisory forester for the CSFS. Long noted that although some elm, maple, birch and walnut trees may visibly exude sap if pruned in the late winter or early spring, this should not harm the tree. If this is a concern, pruning can be done in the summer to avoid sap flow, especially with maple trees.

The CSFS offers the following tree pruning tips: • Know what you want to accomplish before you start pruning. Don’t remove any living branches without a good reason or specific objectives in mind, such as removing crossing/rubbing branches, lifting for height clearance, creating good structure, etc.

• Remove any torn, dead or broken branches (this can be done any time of the year).

• For shade trees, develop or maintain one dominant vertical top stem, or leader, and don’t cut off the tops of trees. If the height of the tree is a concern, there are other methods to reduce tree height, or consider replacing the tree with a shorter species.

• Create adequate spacing of the main branches along the trunk, and prevent branches below the permanent canopy from growing upright or getting too large.

• Always prune just outside the branch collar, the point where one branch attaches to a larger one (or the trunk), often discerned by raised or wrinkled bark.

• Limit pruning of newly planted trees to the removal of dead, damaged or crossing limbs, or those interfering with the main stem, until the tree becomes established in the landscape.

• Avoid removing too many of a tree’s branches in any one year, which puts undue stress on the tree. The amount depends on how much growth the tree has produced in the previous years.

• Consider recycling pruned limbs by having them ground into mulch.

On February 25, 2020, I received a text that read: “FYI, a CDC friend recommends that we all lay in about two weeks worth of canned and frozen goods including protein and toilet paper. There is the anticipation that when Coronavirus gets to the US it may close schools and keep people home from work. Anticipating a huge disruption to supply lines for grocery stores, etc. Not trying to be alarmist, just thought it might be wise to pass along her info.” Smugly, I went out and bought toilet paper to last about eight months.

It wasn’t enough to carry us through the crisis called Coronavirus, or COVID-19 (and a slew of other names not fit for print). March 12 marked the one-year anniversary of when ordinary life as we know it imploded and the world—the entire world went into lockdown. It’s been a year and we’ve only begun to recover. Sadly, those who lost loved ones and those who suffer from lingering symptoms from COVID never will be able to return to their pre-COVID lives.

“Think negative,” I heard someone say.

That was easy enough to do once tests became accessible, which was in July for us. “Think negative” was supposed to be a funny play on words and it was, but it was startlingly close to reality too, because there have been times when it’s been difficult to keep our chins up and our spirits lifted during this year of isolation, desolation, and total destruction of more than half-a-million lives.

And yet.

There have been many positive aspects that have blossomed from the Year of COVID. I asked friends and relatives to name one thing they found to be good about this past year. Here are a few: • Carol L: “Because of COVID we have some new, really good friends. One couple in particular were neighbor acquaintances pre-Covid. But Covid shut down travel for us and for them. We started getting together outdoors for happy hour every few weeks and now we have a trip planned with them to the West Virginia mountains in October.”

• Debbie W had two parts to her favorable pandemic experience: 1) She made it her goal to walk someplace other than in the neighborhood every day. With the exception of just a couple of mornings with sub-arctic temps, she accomplished her goal. 2) She and her husband started enjoying happy hour at home each evening. In summary, Debbie’s pandemic take-away was to walk every day and drink every night. Her husband recalled the Wednesday picnic lunches that have become part of their routine.

•Deedee H: “The one most positive thing that happened to me personally was this: due to lack of social interactions I immersed myself in making art and have had a blast experimenting with and exploring all kinds of new ideas and art mediums—mostly clay! I feel so blessed to have that creative outlet!!”

• Elise R said the horrendous murder of George Floyd ignited her realization of her white entitlement. Since then she has become involved in a neighborhood racial justice book group that is making positive changes in her thoughts and be-

havior.

• Joe P: “The primary silver lining of the Covid pandemic for me has been the intentional walking I’ve done every day. In the process of my intentional walking, I’ve discovered many new trails around the city and have enjoyed observing the great variety of subtle transformations in nature as the seasons changed.

“Another small benefit of staying home has been the discovery of outreach programs at our local modern art museum.

I’ve had a lot of fun helping to create art and then sharing it online with others who have worked on similar projects.”

• Alice S: “Interesting…three months in I probably could have listed a ton of positive things but they’re all just part of life now so it’s hard to pinpoint them.”

One thing?

“Not eating out as often. And Bob and I started walking together more.” That’s two. You know what? With COVID, it doesn’t matter! That’s three…

• Bill and Judy S have been enjoying daily Zoom time and FaceTime with their 2-year-old and 8-year-old grandkids—reading books, memorizing poetry, and simply chatting daily. Judy has become so fond of life at home, she’s not sure she’ll rejoin society once it’s allowed.

• Terri S said this: “The exercise of food procurement comes to mind as a big positive! During our first Covid-19 year we decided to be safe and go food shopping only once a week. We live in Nova Scotia in the summer, where we became excellent sleuths searching out all the right foods to gather in one trip.

“We took a ferry and then drove up the Digby Neck every Thursday. We found roadside vegetable and fruit stands selling just-picked raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and all sorts of great garden vegetables. There was a pick-your-own blueberry farm where you could eat and pick all at the same time!

“When we arrived in the nearest town of Digby we went straight to the fish processing plant to buy fish and Digby scallops fresh off the boats. On most Thursdays we accomplished a third of our provisioning before we even reached the traditional grocery store.”

• Charley H: By driving instead of flying to Chicago, Charley found himself at the Big River Steampunk Festival in Hannibal, Missouri. He got to relive the days of steamboats, steam trains, and the romance of the Victorian era along the western shore of the mighty Mississippi River! It was one wild ride, he said.

Others mentioned that they did more of what they’ve always wished they could do more of: camping, kayaking, swimming laps, getting closer to family, and painting.

In summary, continue to do all the things you’ve been doing to stay negative and do more of what you love to do to stay positive. It’s a healthy equipoise.

Estes Pak Food Program Is Back, Supporting Families Over The Weekends

Estes Park comes together once again to provide food for those who could use a little extra support. Estes Pak is a collaboration between volunteers, nonprofits, and the school district. The program is over four years old, it paused during COVID, and is re-emerging with new players. Second grade teacher Terry Leija started Estes Pak and notes, “I feel like this is a great example of a grass-roots program that continues to help families and continues to evolve to survive.”

The program started when the leadership of the Estes Park Education Association (EPEA, the local teacher union) was approached by the leader of KidsPak, a program out of Loveland that sends food home for families on weekends. The teachers’ union was encouraged to consider how the program might work here. They had an informational meeting, invited service organizations, churches and individuals in the community and found there was a lot of support and interest for the program.

They decided to start fundraising and promoting the program. Terry Leija was the EPEA president and took on the role of Estes Pak Coordinator. This was not

This program started because teachers wanted to support their students, to make sure kids came to school on Monday well fed and ready to learn. COVID has demanded the program adapt and evolve.

the district's idea, it was not a service mandate. The teachers saw a need to help kids in their classes, so they did. No one is paid to do the work. The original intent was to make sure kids came to school on Monday well fed and ready to learn.

The EPEA partnered with the Longs Peak Rotary as their 501c3 nonprofit sponsor. The program was originally funded by a grant from The Food Bank for Larimer County, but later we selffunded locally. Leija explains, “We get money from all sorts of groups in town: the Quota Club just gave us $2,000 in February. Over the years, all the Rotary Clubs have donated, the Woman's Club, and all sorts of other individuals and groups.”

The Food Pak team sends home a bag of food that is nonperishable and has two meals that are healthy and easy to cook. Shelf stable milk, cereal and some snacks are also provided. The families do not need to qualify to get food. If they have a need, or request the food, it is supplied. Originally, the food all came from the food bank in Ft. Collins to an

extra, empty classroom in the elementary school. Teachers, clubs, groups and volunteers packed the food.

In March of 2020, when COVID hit, the program stopped. Leija notes there was too much fear surrounding COVID food handling and the schools were closed. At that point, any surplus food was donated to Crossroads. When school started in the fall, COVID regulations demanded smaller class sizes, which meant any extra classrooms were now being used for instruction. There was nowhere on site to store and pack food.

About three weeks ago, Leija was approached by Courtney Carrol, Estes Park School District’s Social Worker and Mental Health Coordinator. “She had been speaking with Crossroads; we figured out a way to get the program back up and running. Crossroads is really the key now: they are providing the food for the rest of the year. We made a bunch of phone calls to families that might need help and got a lot of requests. This week, we sent home about 33 bags of food to the community.” This number is higher

than the usual 20 or so bags, but requests for up to 45 weekend bags have come through.

The EP School District’s Courtney Carrol is coordinating the program through the end of the school year, which allows teachers to finish out a highly unusual year with demands and adaptations of their own. New providers have been introduced to help make the program go: Estes Pak now pays Crossroads to provide the food, The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (whose offices are conveniently located in the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies (PCCR) across the street from the schools) provides space for volunteers— most of whom are members of PCCR— to pack the food bags.

COVID has forced adaptation in all sectors. Food Pak is a successful program, in part, because of its ability and willingness to evolve and lean into collaboration: it is well-funded by organizations and individuals, it is supported by agile leaders and volunteers, and teachers are willing to adjust in order to continue to support their students’ success.

This drawing submission is not a race, will be selected randomly, not in the order received, and can be done between now until Sunday, March 21, at 5:00 p.m. mountain time. On Tuesday morning, March 23, the park will randomize and draw the first group of names and send those individuals an email with instructions on how to complete the reservation request application.

There is the potential for further names to be drawn. There will be no need to submit a name again for subsequent drawings as names will be drawn from the original applicants. The timing of future drawings will be based on the volume of applicants.

Five Fun Facts About… The Mountain Chickadee By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the mountain chickadee. A lover of the rugged West as much as the rest of us in Estes Park, the mountain chickadee thrives in mixed conifer forests of the Western mountains. These typically grow at 6,900 to 10,500 feet in Colorado. Here are five more facts about these active little birds.

1. Mountain chickadees will feed on seeds, berries, and insects, including their eggs and pupae.

2. Mountain chickadees will lay between five and 12 eggs each spring in a nest that is usually in the hole of a tree, such as an old woodpecker hole or natural cavity.

3. An adult mountain chickadee will make a loud hiss, like a snake, if dis-

turbed on the nest.

4. In addition to mixed conifer forests, mountain chickadees will also live in forests of aspens, pine, spruce-fir, and pinyon-juniper. Aspen forests are particularly popular with mountain chickadees during nesting season for the softer, easier to excavate trunks of these trees.

Mountain chickadees do not migrate and will stay in the Estes Valley region all year.

Although common in the mixed-conifer forests around Estes Park and in Rocky Mountain National Park, mountain chickadees are also pretty common visitors to backyard bird feeders.

Mountain chickadees can be spotted in the coniferous forests perched on branches and looking for food. Listen for their distinct "chick-a-dee" calls.

You can identify the mountain chickadee from the blackcapped chickadee by the thin white stripe above each eye.

Theme, Prizes Unveiled For 2021 Rotary Duck Race By: Rita DuChateau

Although Estes Park may currently resemble a snow globe, everyone knows the Rotary Duck Race Festival is right around the corner. The race committee has unveiled this year’s theme and major prizes. The list of participating organizations that will benefit is complete, the roster of major and associate sponsors finalized, and merchant prize donations and duck adoptions have begun.

The theme of the Saturday, May 1 event, Honoring Our First Responders, captures the gratitude of every resident of Estes Park and the surrounding area for our brave first responders. Last fall, they safeguarded our mountain communities from the rapid advance of the two largest wildfires in Colorado history, helped with mandatory evacuations, tirelessly worked countless hours to ensure safety, and made sure residents had timely status updates.

“We try to make all important decisions as a committee mainly because many members have run or participated in more Duck Races than I have, ” said Big Duck ’21 Bill Solms. “When addressing the theme of this year's race, our good friend Don Widrig suggested first responders, and then firefighters/ paramedics soon followed. He might not have been the first voice, but it was the one I heard first followed by the unanimous approval of the committee.”

Solms has invited first responders to assist with the duck drop into the Lazy River at the Estes Valley Community Center for the start of the Duck Race on May 1.

Each year the race chairperson also works with a local artist to create a unique mascot style and related marketing materials. “Local Herd” cartoon creator Tim Buck is the 2021 artist, having assumed the art role from Gary Hazelton a few years ago.

me into communicating with many great personalities that have been in Estes Park awhile,” Solms said “Tim Buck is an energetic, creative and talented artist who has followed in Gary Hazelton’s tradition of tackling the art aspects of representing an event like our Duck Race. What makes my job easier is to have people like Tim available who are responsive to every aspect the job requires. If you are a firefighter or other type of first responder, you could probably recognize your firefighting/paramedic vehicle in his poster rendition for this year just by its color and design! He even added the Lazy River into the traditional poster in such a way to tactfully explain our dilemma with COVID restrictions unique to 2021. ” The Festival will be live-streamed without the traditional Race Day crowds again this year to ensure the health and safety of the many volunteers and our community. The Duck Race Committee looks hopefully forward to a return to a race where the ducks will “swim” down the Fall River with live crowds and festivities, in 2022.

This year the Rotary Duck Race Festival begins with a “Pre-Flight Show” at noon Saturday, May 1, with celebrity guests and performers, including a performance of “Duck Lake” by Ballet Renaissance, and Cowboy Brad Fitch croon-

ing some of his most memorable songs.

Adoption sales will end at 1 p.m., and the duck drop and the race itself where thousands of little yellow rubber duckies will swim the Lazy River will start around 1:10 p.m. The event will be livestreamed and available for viewing on YouTube, Facebook and TDS Channel 8/108 - The Rocky Mountain Channel.

No in-person attendance will be permitted. A Duck Waddle 5K sponsored by the Estes Park Running Club will kick off Duck Race morning; details and registration are available on estesparkrunning.org/our-races/ duck-waddle-5k. The full day’s schedule is available at www.epduckrace.org/ schedule.

The 2021 event will feature three major cash prizes and two vacation packages donated

by Delaware North Parks and Resorts.

Top prizes are: • $5,000 cash • $2,500 cash • $1,000 cash • Three-night stay for two in a suite at The Pine Lodge on Whitefish River, Whitefish, Montana, located near Glacier National Park. The package includes access to all amenities: continental breakfast, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, bicycles and a guided trip to Glacier National Park.

The vacation packages, which expire on Sept. 30, 2022, are subject to availability and must be arranged through Delaware North.

Additionally, there will be hundreds of prizes donated by Estes Valley merchants. As the first five ducks arrive, prize winners will be announced and posted. All remaining prize winners will be posted on the Duck Race website, epduckrace.org, by 5 p.m. on May 1.

The reason for the race? To help the 65 Estes Valley groups and charities that are participating in this year’s Duck Race. The complete list of beneficiaries is available on epduckrace.org.

“The generosity of major and associate sponsors makes the race possible,” said Scott Thompson, who led the sponsorship effort. Major sponsors contribute $500 or more in cash or services to support race prizes. Associate sponsors donates $100-$499 in cash or services. The company logos of major sponsors and names of associate sponsors appear on Duck Race posters and website and will be published weekly in the local newspapers starting in April.

The 2021 goal is to raise $135,000 or more in duck adoptions. Adoptions benefit the participating organizations that sell them. The cost to adopt a duck remains $20, with an additional $2 handling fee per adoption. For each $20 adoption sold, $19 goes to the beneficiary organization selected by whoever is adopting the duck(s). In the past 30 years, the Estes Park Duck Race has returned more than $2.7 million to Estes Valley charitable and nonprofit organizations. These charities need everyone to adopt ducks more than ever this year!

“WHEN WILL WE GET THERE?”

One of the many good spiritual writers of our day, Max Lucado, jokingly says that he conducted a survey to determine which questions that children ask are the most distressing to their parents or other adults. His ‘survey’ concluded that the question listed as our title was #1. Children are on a trip and the “When will we get there?” question is asked, much to the chagrin of the parent driving. It usually results in an angry retort like that used by the father in ‘The Incredibles’ movie. His angry response: “We’ll get there when we get there!” Max said his favorite way was to use something his girls could relate to, like, “By the time you watch the ‘Little Mermaid’ on the car DVD player three times, we’ll be there.” That seems to do the trick, better than explaining miles or kilometers or other such measurements.

But this questions is not only asked in this type of context. It came up recently in the home of a man who is within just a few days of dying. “When will I get there?” The question is far less likely to be answered appropriately in that case, because we rarely know the answer. Jesus was once asked when God would set up His Kingdom. His response: “Only the Father knows.” And there are many such things…and the length of our lives is one of those. “When will we get there?” will be answered by one of two things: our death…as in the case of my friend…or Christ’s return.

Since we can only guess about the second, we will address only the first.

We’ve often heard the statement: “Only two things in life are certain: death and taxes.”

The Bible agrees with the former: “It is appointed unto man once to die…and then the judgment.”

(Hebrews 9:27) However, while we know that death is certain…unless Christ comes first… we know that the ‘when’ is uncertain. “When will we get there?” is often not within our control. This has been so evident during the pandemic. Some of the people who have been the most careful have fallen prey to the virus and passed away. It is true where accidents and other such tragedies are concerned. There are many ‘innocent parties’ that, sadly, have been taken away…some by accidents caused by careless persons, and others by ‘man’s inhumanity to man’ that we’ve often heard referred to. The writer James in the Bible talks about this uncertainty. “Don’t say: ‘Today or tomorrow, we will go into this city and spend time and trade and get gain, for you do not know what a day will bring forth. You ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills we will do this or that.’” (James 4:13-15) He warns: “What is your life, but a vapor that passes away?”

And that happens with all levels of people: good people, less good people, famous people, non-famous people, rich people, poor people. I came across the story recently of Dale Earnhardt, world famous racer, who was on the last lap of the Daytona 500 race in 2001, when his race car hit the wall at 180 miles per hour and he died. I read even more recently about billionaire Olivier Dassault, #335 of the richest 500 people in the world, who died unexpectedly in a helicopter crash. At the same time, we read of the many who have no such credentials that pass away every day. In the Bible we read Jesus’ story of the rich man and Lazarus, two men that were on the opposite ends of the financial scale, but who both faced the ‘great equalizer’. Both died…but their eternal destiny was so different. In an earlier story Jesus told of a rich man that had a bumper crop and was deciding where to put all of the grain so he could retire and enjoy his ‘bounty’. But the ‘when’ came into play. God said, “This night your soul will be required of you…and then whose will these things be?”

So, back to where we began: “When will we get there?” Because we do not know the answer to that question, we need to focus on a better question: “How will we be when we get there?” This was the focus of my dear friend who will be leaving us. He wanted to talk about how he could be sure about his eternal future. We talked about God’s grace, and Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, and, his life…a life of faith, a life of service to Christ and His church, service to people…a life and man to which, I truly believe, Christ will say “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joys of your lord!”

What about you and me? We can talk about God’s grace and Christ’s sacrifice, but the third topic will determine how you benefit from that grace, and sacrifice. When you get where you’re going…where will you be? That’s the most important question.

I am upstairs typing this column, and glancing out of the window this Saturday afternoon. I am waiting for the big snow. So far it has snowed off and on, and I wonder when we will be snowbound with the predicted four feet of snow. I have already gotten batteries for long dead flashlights, candles, extra food, made soup that I can heat on bar-b-que pit, boiled eggs, bought an electric lantern, fuel for my oil lamp, walked Sunshine, and prepared for the worst, in case we have a power failure.

I have all electric appliances and although I have radiant heat, the boiler needs electricity to run. I do have two fireplaces so will have some warmth.

Hopefully, all my preparations will be for naught. Having lived in New Orleans most of my life, I try to prepare for disasters. By the time you read this, hopefully the sun will be shining, and we will be out and about.

I had new shades installed the other day in my bedroom and had them remove the window valences. Preparing for holes in the walls, I scheduled my painter for today. Guess who did not show. He plans on coming Monday… good luck on that. I am being daring and painting the bathroom dark, dark, blue and a complimentary lighter blue for the bedroom. I have never had such a dark color before.

Now that all my cooking and preparations are done, time for some easy and fun snacks. I really do not know if I ever gave you the two following recipes. If so, just try them again.

Hot Fudge Sauce Makes about 2 cups, reheat in boiling water or carefully in microwave.

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 3/4 cup granulated sugar 12 ounce can evaporated milk 2 Tablespoons salted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Combine the chocolate, sugar, milk, and butter in a medium saucepan.

Cook over medium heat until melted

(about 6-7 minutes).

Bring to a light boil, stirring constantly. Once it has come to a light boil, immediately remove from heat.

Then stir in vanilla. Allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes. It will thicken as it cools. Store in the refrigerator for up to one month. Reheat in microwave in 30-second intervals until warm. This is almost fool proof. I put it in four, half pint jars, this makes a nice gift.

Now, my other fun and easy snack is:

Peanut Butter Chocolate Covered Ritz Crackers ½ cup peanut butter, smooth or chunky 30 Ritz crackers 1 cup chocolate semi-sweet chips 1 Tablespoon butter, margarine or shortening Spread peanut butter on 15 or crackers. Top with other 15 crackers. Meanwhile, melt chips and shortening (your choice). Dip crackers in melted chocolate, covering them as much as you can. Place on baking sheet covered in wax paper on a rack and allow to cool. Store in an airtight container.

These can stay on the countertop for a few days, put the rest in refrigerator… if they last that long.

Here’s a funny story: Chris returned to Nevada with my old car, happy as a lark, and calls every day to talk about it. By now, I needed gas for “Lucy Goosey” (my new car). I drove into the gas station ready to fill her up, reach down to where the release was in “Pearl” (old car), and nowhere could I find the release. I had to call the car dealer to find out where it was.

I told you, I will never learn all the gadgets on this new car! I fully expect to push a button and go out through the roof. Please pick me up if you find me on the side of the road.

US Trail Running Conference DEI Webinar Sets High Benchmark The second webinar in a nine-webinar series introduced by the US Trail Running Conference was hosted on Thursday, February 25. The session subject was Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and focused on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Mirna Valerio, a certified DEI trainer and former educator, was the lead presenter for the session. The webinar also included comments from respected Race Director and photographer, Luis Escobar, who has been a leader in the indus-

ation habits and culture, and commonly used terms. She provided a framework for change that included learning and acknowledgment, assessment and examination, creating and executing a plan, followed by reflection, feedback and reassessment. The ultimate takeaway goal: Make our trails accessible and equitable spaces for all.

Congratulations to Bella Walker, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for March 19, 2021.

At EPHS, Bella is a member of the Student Council and Drama Club. She is on the soccer team and lettered in basketball her freshman year. Her favorite class is anatomy because she finds it so interesting. She maintains a 4.1 GPA and is in the National Honor Society.

Outside of school she enjoys drawing, horseback riding, playing guitar, going to amusement parks, car camping, painting, taking care of animals or any lake day activity. She works at Sombrero Ranch and writes for the Trail Gazette. She helps out at a preschool and will probably work for the Mustang Mountain Coaster this summer.

Bella’s favorite quote is “Life is a garden, dig it.” Bella said, “I really like this quote because it reminds me to just live life, no matter what it gives me.”

We have now seen what one year of living with a pandemic looks like, and there have obviously been many changes.

Businesses with large office buildings required their employees to work from home to reduce the chance of exposure to the virus. As of the end of December, singlefamily homes have seen a year-overyear decrease in availability of 58% and an almost 20% increase in the number of homes sold. The median price of a home sold in the Estes Valley in 2020 was $550,000 and the average price of a home sold just in Estes Park proper is $660,000, up 10% over 2019.

It is definitely a seller’s market, with inventory being so low. It is common today for sellers to have multiple offers on their homes, with many of those higher than the listing price. I Work Hard And I Finally Had To Ask For Help To The Editor: Like many of the working class in Estes Park, I generally have one to three jobs, depending on the season. COVID took away the opportunity to work my hospitality job, which made up about 40% of my income. I do not qualify for unemployment because of my other job. I do not qualify for public assistance—I am over the $1,860/month income limit for a household of two. Yet I have propane tanks to fill, car tires that need replacing, and high winter-time utility bills. Normally, I would save and be prepared for these expenses.

I have never asked for financial help before. I am righteously independent and responsible. However, after months of paying out of my savings accounts and scraping by, I was just…out of Alexander Hoskins My name is Alexander Hoskins. I'm from Boy Scout Troop 8 here in Estes Park. I am currently working on raising money for my Eagle Scout project. For the project, I am going to be providing a gazebo and basketball hoop for the Estes Valley Crisis Advocates' shelter for domestic violence victims. The shelter is a safe space for those who are facing abusive situations at home.

The gazebo will provide a calm place for residents to sit outside and take a deep breath of fresh air. The basketball hoop will provide teenagers/kids a way to have some fun. I am raising funds through GoFundMe and asking for donations to Troop 8 for the project.

Lily Tomasula-Martin Runs In NCAA Cross Country National Championship Race For CSU

When Heywood Braun, an American journalist during the early part of the 20th century, said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it,” he wasn’t thinking about Lily Tomasula-Martin.

Yet the Estes Park High School graduate exemplifies the idea that athletics provides challenges to our character.

All-league in track and field and cross country running, and a 2014 state champion in cross country for the Bobcats, Tomasula-Martin continued her love of running at Colorado State University, where she earned more honors—all Mountain West in 2019 and 2020-21.

Her ninth place finish at the March 5 MW championships helped the Rams claim third place and earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Division I national championship meet March 15 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

At Stillwater last Monday, Tomasula Martin was in 43rd place at 3000 meters, halfway to the 6-kilometer finish, just seven seconds behind the leaders. Somewhere between the 3K and 4K marks, however, she was inadvertently spiked, which cut through her shoe and into her lower heel. At five-kilometers, she was in 83rd place.

“She was running with it for a while and changing her form,” said CSU head coach Art Siemers, “but she had a problem pushing off from that foot and just hit the wall in the last half mile or so.”

Tomasula-Martin eventually had to walk, finishing 207th. The Rams finished 23rd, in front of six ranked teams.

Rather than bemoan her misfortune, she emphasized her teammates’ efforts.

The women’s appearance at the championship meet was the first since 2007.

“Had a rough day myself,” TomasulaMartin said, “but I am extremely proud of the team and excited to see what we can continue to do with this momentum!”

Tomasula-Martin joined Courtney Bouchet as former Bobcats who’ve run at the Division I championship meet.

Bouchet, a 2010 EPHS grad, ran for the University of Colorado at the 2012 NCAA meet.

When and why did you first start running Lily?

I discovered running in seventh grade when a friend on the team highly encouraged me to come to one cross country practice. Both my parents ran in college and I’m sure they were thrilled but they never placed any pressure to pick a sport as long as my brother and I were active. I was rather indifferent about the sport until the first race I competed in. I got third place, despite my own mother telling me to slow down (I’m pretty sure neither of us realized I had any potential until that moment, and she thought she was saving me from an epic crash and burn). Once I started racing, I was hooked, and I’ve really never looked back. I loved (and still do) the feeling of empowerment that comes from racing. I also have terrible coordination, so my options were limited.

What personal qualities of yours have most contributed to your success?

I am stubborn to a fault. Which may sound like an odd answer, but I believe that when I set goals, I do a lot to accomplish them. Even if it’s not super re-

alistic in the moment. It also helps a lot in toughing it out when workouts or races get hard. I think the most success I’ve felt through running has come from being relentless (stubborn) in my efforts to succeed. With running there are often small glimmers of success that emerge from months of training, some crappy miles and workouts, and overall enjoyment of the process.

What motivates/inspires you when you're not meeting your expectations for racing and training, when doubt sets in?

I think that’s a really great question because it highlights some of the hardest parts of running. It is an overwhelmingly mental sport and you only get out of it what you put into it but you often need help along the way. I think the people in my life are my biggest motivators.

I have an amazing coach currently and I’ve had really amazing coaches that taught me to love running. My parents are super fans and help me appreciate the sport even at my lowest moments and there have been plenty of those. And I think returning to my roots. At the end of the day, I just love to run, and, in my heart, I am still the young girl that found something that took her places and taught her how to be strong and free and that’s something that will never change What are a couple of the highlights of your competitive running career, high school and college?

High school feels so long ago now (I think I’m officially feeling old) but a few moments stand out to me. Getting second as a team at state my freshman year despite the flood was phenomenal. After that, being a state champion and run-

ning World’s for trail running. College successes are harder for me to answer. I think it’s perhaps because they are less time or race placement focused. I also don’t have the retrospective of looking back on my experience just yet. I had to come back from several stress fractures and I’m really proud of myself for not quitting and for coming back tougher. I do feel like being the top scorer for the women’s cross team for the past two years is an important accomplishment for me as well as being an All-Conference runner, All- Region runner and Academic All-American. More recently, qualifying for nationals with my team was one of the most rewarding feelings I’ve ever had. I hope to top that with becoming an All-American on Monday.

When I decided I wanted to run in college I got some advice that I feel every woman in athletics should know. There is a spot for you on a collegiate team, you may have to search for it but there is a spot. So, go after it and never be afraid of trying hard for something and occasionally coming up short. You have to fail upward in order to get to anywhere that is worth going. Running has greatly shaped who I am. It has taught me to feel connected with my community and the earth around me, to never give up and to always take a chance on myself and believe in myself. It has taught me compassion and strength. And I would take every single heartbreak I have felt in running, and there are more than I am able to count, to have had this wonderful, slightly odd sport in my life.

“Creating We:” Explore Business Books With The Chamber And Library A business bookshelf offers a wellspring of ideas and innovations on a variety of topics— leadership skills, marketing, profitable enterprise— and much more.

Add into that mix the inspiration that comes from discussing these topics with other like-minded readers. That is the concept behind a new book discussion opportunity launching in April: the Chamber Book Club, a partnership between the Estes Chamber of Commerce and the Estes Valley Library.

The first discussion book is “Creating We: change I-thinking to Wethinking and build a healthy thriving organization” by author and executive coach Judith Glaser. The discussion will take place via Zoom on Friday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to noon. Sign up at estesvalleylibrary.org and you’ll receive information on ways to acquire a copy of the book.

In “Creating We,” Glaser presents her personal program for modern-day

business leadership, explaining how good communication skills and a team-approach can achieve a sense of business unity, commitment, and shared goals.

The conversation will be facilitated by the Chamber’s Executive Director, Donna Carlson. It is open to all community members who are interested in learning more about “WE-centric” leadership strategies as outlined in the book.

As participants build their business acumen through this and future book discussions, they will also learn more about the chamber, its members, and the support this network provides to local businesses. Together, the goal is build a resilient economy in Estes Park.

Library Offers Tax Forms And AARP Tax Assistance During this tax season, the Estes Valley Library has basic forms and instructions in stock. Many more are available to print, with in-library or curbside pick-up options.

Currently on hand at the library are booklets containing the basic 1040 and 1040SR instructions and forms. Also available are the State of Colorado’s 1040 and 1040SR forms, in both English and Spanish. For those qualifying for Colorado’s Property Tax/Rent/Heat Rebate, there is a Form 104PTC Booklet.

Need a specialty form or instructions? Look for the Library’s “Tax Preparation Assistance” page for links to the IRS and State of Colorado websites. You can print forms from any of

the library’s five public Internet computers, or call 970-586-8116 to request any forms to be printed by staff. From home, printing can be requested via estesvalleylibrary.org/print.

Kennith Clarence Buckert Kennith Clarence Buckert, 91, of Estes Park, passed away on March 10, 2021 at the Good Samaritan facility in Loveland, Colorado with his two daughters by his side. He was born in 1930 to Harold and Myrtle Buckert in Bernice, Idaho. He grew up on construction sites as his father worked with MorrisonKnudsen, moving frequently living in Arkansas, Texas, Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, California and Wyoming.

He graduated from high school in Shoshoni, Wyoming in 1949. He was a star athlete playing basketball, football and any other sport offered. He attended the University of Wyoming for a year before he enlisted in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War where he was stationed aboard the APA USS George Clymer from 1950-1954.

While in the Navy his ship saw duty in San Diego, Subic Bay, Philippines, China and Inchon, South Korea. Ken played on the Navy basketball team.

Following his military duty he attended the University of Idaho where he received a Bachelors Degree in both Business Administration and Accounting and took additional data processing and programming courses.

He married his high school sweetheart, Jacquie Larsen, in 1952 in Sandpoint, Idaho. They had four children, Kevin (Linda) Buckert of Estes Park, Kristy (Patrick) Anderson of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Kenna Pittman of Estes Park, and Kelly (Deb) Buckert of Olathe, Kansas. He was also blessed with six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Cocoa, and cat, Lucy.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Jacquie and two brothers, Cloyce and Duane.

Ken began his career as an Accountant for Wyerhaueser Timber Co. in Springfield, Oregon and then Morrison-Knudson Company in Boise, Idaho. In Chillicothe, Missouri he was Assistant VP at Citizens National Bank where he was in charge of the data processing service center. From there he moved to Independence, Missouri working at Commerce Bank of Kansas City as the Operations Manager overseeing all accounting procedures and data processing. Following that he worked at Eastern Distributing, Inc. where he was the Data Processing Manager and retired as Director of Data Processing and Head of

Accounting at the Mid-America Payment Exchange and the Greater Kansas City Clearing House Association. He also worked for H&R Block part-time as a tax consultant for years.

Retiring to Estes Park, Colorado in 1995 he worked part-time at Scott’s Sporting Goods until Jacquie and he bought the Brass Junction, a retail store, in 1999 and operated this for six years.

Ken was involved in many different organizations including the Boy Scouts, Jaycees, Rotary, and Elks. He volunteered for Rocky Mountain National Park and the Rooftop Rodeo Committee in Estes Park. He was an ambassador for the Town of Estes Park volunteering at the Visitors Center. He was a member and Elder of the Presbyterian Church in Independence, Missouri and a Deacon in the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park. He also sang in his church choirs as well as with the Estes Park Chorale and the Mountain Men Barbershop Chorus of Estes Park. He loved to dance and Jacquie and he belonged to a square dancing group in Missouri and then the Friday Nighters Dance Club in Estes Park. Besides dancing and singing he was the best whistler and could be found “whistling while working.” Some of the activities he enjoyed during his life were playing pool, golfing, fishing, camping, hiking, scuba diving, bowling, reading, collecting coins and stamps and playing bridge.

He loved having his children and grandchildren around and was so proud every time he talked about them. He loved all things western including reading western books, watching western movies and wearing western clothes.

A private Celebration of Life for Ken will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank Good Samaritan of Loveland Nursing staff for the loving care provided to him during his stay since Nov. 2020.

Petra "Pete" Jean Jansen It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our mothers, Petra "Pete" Jean Jansen's passing on Friday March 12th, 2021. Mom passed away peacefully as she was resting.

A native Coloradoan born in Denver to Arthur & Corrine Turner on 11/24/32, Pete was from a long line of family natives before her. She learned her love for all things outdoors and the mountains early on.

Mom enjoyed exploring, hiking, skiing, tobogganing, fishing and picnicking in many places through much of Colorado. She shared that love with family and friends all her life.

She had that unique & independent can-do spirit that belongs to people lucky enough to call Colorado home, in all she did.

She chose Estes Park as her home in 1976 to be nearer her parents and fell in love with the location of this charming village & its people and was thrilled to have the RMNP as her backyard. Mom began her next career with Upper Thompson and stayed 22 years until her retirement. Throughout that time she made many dear lifelong friends that she adored and considered family. She was so grateful for those cherished folks, as are we. After retirement, Mom spent time traveling & enjoying the park and all its wonder as often as she could.

Many of you know Mom for her impeccable appearance & style as she was always dressed to the best! She was also a wonderful cook and the perfect hostess or guest! She never missed a card for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries & thank you's. She also enjoyed singing, playing piano, art, her breakfast club, shopping, meeting up with friends and her church. She was a devout Christian and believed in heaven for souls eternal life. We have no doubt that God just received an angel. If friendship and love were measured as wealth, Mom was very rich indeed.

Left to cherish Moms memories are her daughter Tami (Bobby), her son Trent, surrogate son Danny Williams, granddaughters Kirsten & Kaylee, grandson Jayson, nephews Michael, Gordon, Tim and a whole host of friends & extended family to numerous to name.

Many thanks to all the wonderful people who helped our family make this last journey with our mother.

And lastly to the amazing staff from Hope Hospice who's tough job it is to give comfort and compassion under such heartbreaking transitions - our family is forever thankful for all you did.

Clark Lee Rittner 1946 - 2021 Clark Lee Rittner was born on March 3, 1946 in Denver, CO. to Wilfred and Margaret Rittner.

He graduated from Adams City High School in 1964 after earning the achievement of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Later, Clark attended Colorado State University where he studied Zoology.

In 1966, he married the love of his life, Linda Porter. After a few years of marriage, Clark and Linda decided to start a family. In 1970, they welcomed their first son Christian, with three more sons, and one daughter eventually to follow. In 1977, after working with King Soopers for a number of years, Clark began a career in the Food Brokerage business working with RH Bell in Denver, CO. In 1987, Clark began his own insurance brokerage which is still in business today.

During their 55-year marriage, Clark and Linda lived in Aurora, CO., Mitchell, NE., Longmont, CO., and Johnstown, CO. In 2019 he made the move to Estes Park, CO., finally fulfilling his dream of living out his retirement years in the mountains. Both he and Linda lived there together.

Clark was also an avid outdoorsman.

He enjoyed camping, hiking, and numerous trips with his children. He loved being outdoors and seeking adventure on the hiking trails around the front range and in the Colorado mountains, imparting this love to his children along the way. Some of his family’s fondest memories of Clark have to do with the outdoors that he loved so much. One particular trip that makes his family chuckle was a hike up Longs Peak. It was Clark’s week to choose the hike, and after getting a late start, they had to park a mile down the road. The day was beautiful, lunches were packed and off they went! He and his daughter started the trek, with the added mile of distance. He challenged his daughter to run up the stone steps. Never missing out on a challenge, made the run together. After this “near-death experience” they took a long pause before continuing to Chasm lake. Enjoying the views and chit-chat, they stopped for lunch at the lake. With storms rolling in, they decided it was time to head back. Carefully walking on the narrow path with a ledge to one side, they slowly made their way back down the mountain. As they hiked, Clark decided to challenge his daughter again, this time “hike with one eye closed”, he said. Challenge accepted! His daughter promptly closed one eye and tried to navigate the trail.

She quickly told him he was nuts, he quickly responded by saying that this was how he saw the entire day, finding out later that he made the hike only being able to see out of one eye. His

daughter made sure the adventure was not repeated until a trip to the eye doctor was made.

Clark’s faith was a powerful and constant part of his life.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and became an invaluable and trusted member of the church community in both Longmont and Johnstown.

Through his service to the church Clark touched many lives. He had a drive to serve others, often volunteering at his grandchildren’s schools and the with The Greeley Chorale. He was well known for heading up fund raising events and assisting with other church and civic activities in Longmont, Loveland, and Greeley.

After a short, but courageous, battle with pancreatic cancer, Clark slipped peacefully into eternity on Saturday, March 13th, 2021 rejoining his parents and all his loved ones who had departed this life before him.

Clark was a devoted and caring father to his five children. He was a champion for his family, always working tirelessly to make sure that they were cared for and a part of his life. He was also a tremendous part of all nine of his grand children’s lives from the time they were born right up until the day he passed. All his children and grandchildren are better people today for having had Clark in their lives. It truly was an honor to call him father and grandfather.

We are especially grateful to all the doctors and nurses who made Clark as comfortable as possible throughout the last few months of his life.

Clark was preceded in death by his father Wilfred and his mother Margaret. He is survived by his dear wife Linda Rittner, their five children: Christian (Stephanie) of White Rock, NM, Michael (Jennifer) of Firestone, David (Heather) of Estes Park, Matthew (Vance, former spouse) of Denver, and Katilyn of Greeley, and his sister Gwendolyn (Dave) of Boynton, VA. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren; Emma (Rob), Amy, Calvin, Connor, Sabrina, Joshua, Ariela, Greyson, and Martin, and many dear friends too numerous to name.

Funeral services will be held at 1:15 PM on Thursday, March 18th 2021 at The Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints in Johnstown, CO. A small graveside service will be held for family members only, immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Clark’s name to The Greeley Chorale, an animal shelter of your choice, or a pancreatic cancer research organization of your choice.
