Larimer County Health Department Issues Local Public Health Order To Guide County Through The Next Phase Of Pandemic The Larimer County Department of Health & Environment (LCDHE) has issued a Public Health Order (PHO) to help guide the county through the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and toward a full reopening.

The Larimer County order has been issued as Colorado’s Executive Order PHO 20-36 and the Dial 3.0 has expired.

The intent of the local Public Health Order is to protect the Larimer County community and to slow the spread of COVID-19 as progress in vaccination efforts continues, while using best public health practices to support the reopening of businesses and begin to return to life as normal. LCDHE’s Eighth Amended PHO is effective on April 16, and is in effect for 30 days.

On Tuesday, public health officials with the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) encouraged local public health officials to implement county-level restrictions that will suppress transmission of the virus while supporting economic recovery efforts. This transition establishes that restrictions be based on local conditions rather than statewide public health orders.

The Larimer County order will mostly align local restrictions with what was Level Blue of Colorado’s Dial 3.0. This means that Larimer County businesses will now have fewer restrictions and increased capacity limits to guide operations than before under Level Yellow.

Nearly 400 Larimer County businesses that are Level Up/5-Star certified have been operating in Level Blue for the past

several weeks and are required to follow the new local order at this time.

“It’s possible we’re only about a month away from removing all COVID-19 restrictions, but we need everyone’s help to cross the finish line by continuing to wear a mask, social distance, and get vaccinated as soon as possible,” said Public Health Director Tom Gonzales.

“Due to increased vaccination efforts, we are confident this 30 day order will give our community time to begin to see significant and sustained declines in disease transmission and hospitalizations that are necessary to end the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The LCDHE local mask order, the Seventh Amended PHO, remains in effect and all residents and visitors in Larimer County must continue to wear a mask in indoor public spaces when 6 foot distancing cannot be maintained from

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On April 7 at 12:50 a.m. police stopped a 34 year old male driver from Allenspark, CO in the 3100 block of South St. Vrain Ave. and found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and transported to Larimer County Jail and charged with DUI, careless driving and driving while license revoked.

On April 17 at 1:04 a.m. police were called to the 400 block of Hillside Lane where they arrested a 52 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with possession of a weapon while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, unlawful carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing a peace officer, violation of felony bail bond conditions, and violation of a restraining order. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

Larimer County COVID-19 Cases Rise Again-Officials Asking Residents To Get Vaccinated Without Delay Larimer County Department of Health & Environment has seen a significant rise in COVID-19 cases in the county in recent weeks. Larimer County public health officials and local vaccine providers are working to get enough of the community vaccinated to slow the increasing COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations occurring locally.

In Larimer County, the one-week case rate has increased from 103.7 to 227.2 cases per 100,000, more than doubling over the last three and a half weeks.

The positivity rate of local COVID-19 testing rose from 4.8% to 7.5% over the last two weeks. The county is also losing ground on the progress we had with declining hospitalizations.

The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment is reporting that 1 in 196 Coloradans currently have the COVID-19 virus. In Larimer County, cases are primarily increasing among age groups that are largely unvaccinated, including those between the ages of 16-49 who are recently eligible to get COVID vaccines.

The increase in COVID-19 cases is concerning because it leaves unvaccinated populations, including schoolaged children, vulnerable to illness and disrupts in-person learning. COVID-19 vaccines are not yet approved for use in those under age 16.

“It has been our priority to suppress the spread of the virus in Larimer County to reduce unnecessary illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. Keeping our businesses open and our kids learning inperson is also critical for our community to keep moving forward,” says Larimer County Public Health Director Tom Gonzales.

Vaccination, face coverings, and social distancing all help slow the spread of the virus in the community. Recently, resi-

dents may have become less cautious, and may not be following basic precautions. Cases have continued to rise as a result.

“The last thing our department wants to do is adopt any additional protective restrictions. We believe we are in the final push to get out of this pandemic, and we’re asking our residents to continue to wear a mask, social distance and make an appointment to get vaccinated, without delay. The sooner we can get to at least 65% of eligible residents having at least one-dose of COVID-19 vaccine, the sooner we can truly get back to normal,” says Gonzales.

In 2020, 180 volunteers gave 4,981 hours to the Town of Estes Park through service on boards, commissions, programs, services and events -- a value of $126,666.83 that volunteers gave back to the community.

husband Roger and you retired? You can do as you please, why complicate your life by serving as mayor?

My typical response to the question is twofold. First, as a former business owner and athlete, I am used to being in motion and plan to stay in motion, until something slows me down. Second, I derive great satisfaction from completing things I start.

My answer usually concludes with me saying that as mayor I get to both, be in motion and complete things, but do so at rates and amounts different than what I previously knew.

For instance, as a business owner and as an athlete I had to respond to quickly changing circumstances.

Time was critical. Motion mattered. Speed was key to success. In contrast, government—in Estes and elsewhere— moves at a much different pace. Every step is set forth in laws and codes.

Transparent planning, notifications, funding, preparation and approvals take time.

Not surprisingly, as mayor I now find myself reading updates about capital investment projects of the town that were either contemplated or set in motion during my previous two terms as a trustee. Creating situations in which what I helped start are coming to fruition.

The Stanley Home Museum is one such project. Headed up by a private foundation, town trustees have been frequently engaged in discussions about the museum. Having participated in early on discussions about formation of the museum, I was delighted to recently partici-

Not sure what level of interest to expect from Sean, I was pleased to see his interest heighten as the tour progressed and details about Flora and F. O. Stanley and their house were presented.

JoAnn Batey, President of the Historic Stanley Home Foundation and R. J. Lara, the museum’s executive director did terrific jobs explaining the renovation process that’s underway.

After leaving the museum, while I was driving, Sean chatted up a storm about what he’d experienced. I attribute much of Sean’s gregariousness to the passion that JoAnn and R. J. brought to their roles as docents. Thanks to their welldelivered and informative presentations, this grandmother earned some positive points with her grandson for a memorable afternoon.

As I write this report out, I’m reflecting on the event at the museum, the nature of motion and importance of completion. I think about the many forms that motion can take for the common good of Estes Park. The countless ways townspeople move ideas forward. The wonderful feelings that accompany every forward step of a capital improvement project, and the joy of shared accomplishment that comes with a project’s completion. As these thoughts wash over me, my heart is filled with gratitude for all who toil in the service of others... and for my grandson who helps me focus on what matters most.

Estes Park EDC Investor Spotlight Estee Rivera Murdock has served on the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation (Estes Park EDC) Board of Directors for two years, representing the Rocky Mountain Conservancy (RMC).

Estee grew up in southern Arizona, where she attended the University of Arizona studying anthropology and Spanish literature. She worked for several years as an archaeologist before resuming her education in geography with a focus on visitation of national parks.

Estee transitioned to working for the National Park Service (NPS) in Washington D.C. There, she developed strategic partnerships for the NPS and played a role in institutionalizing the Every Kid Outdoors program, which gives 4th graders free national parks pass across the United States.

Estee has been with RMC for four years and will join them in celebrating their 90th anniversary this year. RMC is involved in different aspects of the community including conservation corps, land acquisition projects, stewardships projects and more.

Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, philanthropic efforts have not subsided, as members and supporters provided over $2 million in donations to RMNP in 2020. RMC is now concentrating on wildfire recovery efforts, facilitating projects that will help to rebuild trails, clean burned areas and build burn piles for preventative burns in the future.

They are also using this time to evaluate

their educational program for RMNP and will identify new ways to provide programming without competing with commercial interests and guiding companies.

Estee understands the importance of the national park’s relationship with the Estes Valley, and RMC is proud to support the community in programs like the Thumb and Needle Open Space program. RMC has also been heavily involved in discussions with the community to address common challenges such as employee retention in relation to childcare and workforce housing needs for their employees.

In her time on the Estes Park EDC Board of Directors, Estee has learned the benefit of building new partnerships in the Estes Valley; and how breaking down barriers and forming alliances contributes to economic development and sustainability. She believes that “the economic health of the community is intrinsically linked to the health of the Rocky Mountain National Park and public lands that surround the Estes Valley.” Adam Shake, President and CEO, affirms that “proper stewardship of both public and private lands is very important to the Estes Park EDC. In addition to bringing the Rocky Mountain Conservancy voice to our Board of Directors, Estee and I have also worked on projects together with the Estes Valley land trust. Intelligent land use policies benefit everybody in the Estes valley.”

Adopt A Duck Or Flock To Compete In Rotary Duck Race By: Rita DuChateau You can almost hear them quacking their readiness to race. Thousands of little yellow rubber ducks are groomed and ready for their television debut on Saturday, May 1, when the race will be live-streamed on TDS Channel 8/108 - The Rocky Mountain Channel, YouTube and Facebook. But most important to the little ducks is getting adopted in time for their big swim at the Estes Valley Community Center.

More than 60 Participating Organizations are as excited for the Duck Race as the ducks.

These school and community groups and nonprofits rely on the annual event to raise funds for their organizations, to help them feather their financial nests and carry out their philanthropic missions.

Larry Williams, Rotary Duck Race Festival organizations committee chairman, encourages residents, near and far, to adopt ducks and select an organization that will benefit from the purchase. For every duck adopted for $20 (plus and $2 handling fee),

$19 will fly directly back to the organization chosen by the adopter.

“The Duck Race is very important to all of the Participating Organizations,” Williams stressed. “For some, it covers a major part of their budgets. For others, it’s merely a supplement to their budget, but still very important.”

Williams said that the Participating Organizations look forward to the annual fall opening of the application period for the Duck Race. To keep the organizations in the information loop, Williams sends out weekly Duck Adoption updates, which helps them track their success.

“The 65 Participating Organizations provide a lot of support to the community in so many ways. We are proud to sponsor the 33rd Rotary Duck Race to help these groups survive and thrive,” Williams said.

As a youth, my mother learned Girl Scout camp songs at Camp Sacajawea in Boone, Iowa. Years later, she took me to Girl Scout sing-alongs so I could grow to love those memorable tunes and verses—and so I’d know the songs when I went to the same camp as a Scout and later as a camp counselor. (My camp name was Chipper.) With my mom singing along, I learned one of the more traditional Scout songs when I was a Brownie and it went like this: I’ve got something in my pocket that belongs across my face.

I keep it very close at hand in a most convenient place.

I’m sure you wouldn’t guess it if you guessed a long, long while.

So I’ll take it out and put it on, It’s a great big Brownie smile!

With that we would pretend to pull something out of our invisible shirt pocket, swipe that imaginary something across our face, and break into a great big Brownie smile. I could have sung that song all day (and probably did).

They say music is one of the few ways we are able to break through the barricade that separates us from our loved ones living in the prison called Alzheimer’s. To be effective, the tunes they hear need to be music they are familiar with; songs that are imbedded in their memories from long ago. So I sing Girl Scout songs with my Mom. Our favorite is “Baby Owlet, ” the soothing lullaby she sang to her kids as she tucked us in at night. Our roles are reversed now, and since COVID restrictions have lifted some, I have been able to sing “Baby Owlet” to her, tucking her blankets around her shoulders. I can hardly get through the song without my voice cracking and my eyes tearing up. She may only mouth a word or two but I know she remembers the song. I can see it in her smile.

Where I meant to go with this was to your pocket—where you keep your great big smile. Pockets are handy for carrying all sorts of things: a smile of course, a pencil and notepad, chapstick, a handkerchief, paperclips, a found penny…and a poem!

Next Thursday, April 29, is National Poetry Month’s designated Poem in Your Pocket Day. This is the day when we get to use our miniature junk drawer (our pocket) to conveniently carry around a poem, keeping it very close at hand to share with others. You may want to read your pocket poem aloud to an individual, perhaps the person behind you in line at the coffee shop (make sure you’re socially distant and speak loud and clear with your mask on), or you can stand on a park bench and sing-song it out to anyone nearby who cares to stop and listen. It’s Poem in Your Pocket Day—you can do whatever you want with your selected poem! It’s better if you choose a poem that is relatively short so you don’t lose the attention of your audience.

Here are a few poems that are options to carry with you for the day, starting with one of my all-time favorites: This Is Just To Say by William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold

Here’s another classic, Love After Love by Derek Walcott (19302017) The time will come when, with elation you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other's welcome, and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

And neither the Mayor, the Town Board, nor the local media have asked important and urgent questions about why such a change is necessary now, without any public input, and in the complete absence of any scientific data showing its necessary for conservation purposes.

As a result of the Park leadership’s undemocratic behavior and refusal to provide science‐based reasons for their action, we filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Department of the Interior for all behind‐closed‐doors discussion and plans related to the decision to restrict access to the Park again this year, as well the decision to enact permanent changes to Park access without asking the public whether it should be done at all.

Until and after that request is processed, and in the name of transparency, good public policy, and in the interests of the American people who enjoy the Park and the people of Estes Park, whose community depends on it, we demand: 1.

The Park’s leadership immediately suspends the plan for this year’s reservation system until the public can independently review the internal docu‐ ments used to justify the decision. If this is being driven by national politics or a radical environmental agenda to restrict public access to public lands over the long‐term, the public has a right to know, to object, and to stop it before it moves any further.

Superintendent Sidles and the Park’s leadership immediately comply with the Freedom of Information Act request and provide all internal data and documentation related to their pursuit of permanent restrictions on public access. Why is the Park ramming a restrictive system in now? Why hasn’t it asked the public? Why has it provided no scientific proof that it’s necessary on conservation or preservation grounds? What is being said behind closed doors? Why pretend to engage with the public but dodge the real questions that matter?

Superintendent Sidles immediately halt the NEPA process for long‐term changes to Park access. This will result in ‘second class citizenship’ for millions of potential Park visitors. It will make the Park the plaything for rich, white, and retired Americans. The process is a sham. It includes public ‘input’. But the important decision about whether Rocky Mountain National Park should restrict public access has ALREADY been made. If the Park leadership wants public support, it must treat the public as equal partners in the management of a cherished national resource which is owned by the public (not by the Park’s administrators and bureaucrats).

We all love Rocky Mountain National Park. There is no scientific data that show it’s being ‘loved to death.’ The 1872 bill passed by Congress that created Yellowstone National Park did so ‘for the benefit and enjoyment of the People.’

Making Rocky Mountain National Park inaccessible or harder to enjoy for a large number of the American people directly contradicts the spirit of the entire National Park System. It’s undemocratic, unfair, and unnecessary. Our National Parks are there not just to be conserved and protected from people, but to be used and enjoyed by them in a safe, responsible, and fair way.

There is a balance to be struck between conservation and the mission of our National Park’s to be refuges of beauty and enjoyment for the American public. The Park’s leadership, under Superintendent Sidles, has unilaterally decided to alter that balance—at the expense of the American people.

If you love the Park and want to preserve it for the enjoyment of future generations, then you owe it to them to help stop the park from blocking public access to public lands before it’s too late.

People have power. Public lands belong to the American people. Parks are for the public, not the privileged.

Permanent changes to how the public access public lands should not be made behind closed doors, at the urging of a radical po‐ litical agenda. They should be made transparently, in the presence of scientific data, and with full and equal participation of the public in the fate or our public lands.

Meadow Mountain Ranch (MMR) is Girl Scouts of Colorado’s premiere wilderness adventure property just 15 miles south of Estes Park near Allenspark. Women’s Week is a great opportunity for women of all ages to come to camp and play and have fun in this pristine outdoor atmosphere. Ladies need not be a Girl Scout, ever have been a Girl Scout, or even have ever been to camp before. Our program is created by us, and we have the exclusive use of the entire camp, and the freedom to explore, relax, gather, visit and otherwise wind up and wind down as the days go by.

Dates: July 22-26, 2021. The first meal is Thursday lunch and the last meal is Monday brunch. Importantly, the information document is attached to this news release, and the registration link is embedded in that flier. This link includes all the costs and offers various al-

ternate schedules to fit the needs of any individual.

The Women’s Week event is also cosponsoring the 60th Anniversary Reunion for all MMR staff alums, former campers, families and friends. The Reunion events will be held all day on Saturday, July 24, including three meals. An over-the-top banquet dinner will be the highlight of the evening’s program. Included in that Reunion schedule will be camp tours, history collections, memorabilia, crafts, traditional sing-along, campfire, and a Silent Auction to help raise funds for the support of MMR and its upkeep and development.

Families, including younger children and men, are welcome for the Reunion program, but the rest of the Women’s Week schedule is restricted to gals only, ages 18 and up. It’s a great opportunity particularly for women to include their moms and daughters, grand-daughters, co-workers – indeed, any ladies they’d like to share the experience with.

Our alumni database extends nationwide, and we are hoping many from out of state will choose to take the opportunity to join us, “Sing, Sing Together,” and “Make New Friends.”

The Women’s Week fees cover: Site fees. We have exclusive use of MMR which includes 4 tabin units (with built in bunk beds), the lodge, homestead house and limited other facilities to accommodate those with restricted mobility.

Food. We love to cook out over an open fire and we can accommodate most special dietary needs. There are plenty of creative and tasty choices offered.

Program. Some costs can be covered: but the majority of what we do – we bring ourselves!

Take Home A Free Cinco de Mayo Meal On May 5 Estes Park’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration has been a popular local tradition for decades. This year, although there will be no in-person fiesta or live music, the tradition will continue, thanks to the team at Mountain Home Cafe.

On Wednesday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., community members are encouraged to stop by Mountain Home Cafe and pick up a free Mexican dinner they can take home and enjoy. While there will be no indoor dining during those hours, everyone’s meal will be assembled for an easy take-out option.

Over the years, the annual “Cinco” event has provided an opportunity for many families to come together around a shared celebration. Local bird expert and Director of CARRI, Scott Rashid recently spotted this Common Loon at Lake Estes. He said, “It is only the 10th time a loon as been seen at Lake Estes since 1996.”

Loons like this Common Loon have both hollow and solid bones, where other birds have only hollow bones. This allows the birds to swim with most of their bodies out of the water like a duck, or swim mostly submerged with only their heads out of the water. They feed heavily upon fish which they catch by swimming underwater.

Quota Continues Charitable Giving Throughout The Year

Members of Estes Park Quota haven’t been able to host their regular annual fundraisers the past year due to the Covid pandemic, yet they are still generously giving back to our community.

Even though it seems the entire world has stood still, Quota members have kept busy, meeting via Zoom format, planning and continuing their commitment of serving those in need.

Quota is a nonprofit organization, helping hearing and speech impaired individuals and disadvantaged women and children. They also have a medical supply Loan Closet open to all residents of Estes and visitors. Other local efforts include providing education scholarships and service to seniors.

Below is a list of where their funds have specifically gone this year.

Loans are intended to be on a temporary basis and they offer equipment such as walkers, bath benches, bedside commodes, hospital beds, crutches, canes, knee scooters, shower chairs and benches, toilet risers, walkers, including four wheeled walkers with a seat, wheelchairs, transport wheelchairs and more.

Quotarians want the community to know that since the Taste of Estes can’t be safely held this year, they have come up with a fun, new fundraiser so their giving to the community can continue.

They are hosting their Taste of Spring Geranium Sale, (and who doesn’t need a taste of spring right now!?) You may choose quart or gallon sized containers of pink, red, salmon or white geraniums.

Each spring, Colorado welcomes an abundance of new young wildlife across the state. As wildlife becomes more visible in backyards, trails and open spaces, CPW and local parks receive an increase of office visits and calls from concerned people who report they “rescued” young wildlife that appeared “abandoned” by adult animals.

Although reports are made with good intentions, people routinely orphan young wildlife by essentially kidnapping them and bringing them to CPW offices.

Deer, elk and pronghorn mothers hide their young for long periods of time while foraging. Young that have been removed cannot be successfully returned to the wild, as the mother will not continue searching for a missing baby or reject it because it was handled by humans and may no longer smell like her baby.

Important Points to Remember About Young Wildlife Important Points to Remember about Young Wildlife  Each year, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) receives an increase of calls and office visits from concerned people that report they “rescued” young wildlife that appeared “abandoned” by adult animals. Often, they bring the young wildlife into a CPW office, requiring us to send it to a rehabber.  Many people wrongly believe they are "helping" young animals by picking them up, taking them home and trying to feed them. It is critical that people understand there is no substitute for an animal’s natural parent and diet.  Wildlife experts agree it is normal for adult animals to leave their young in

safe places while they search for food. A doe, for example, will go off and feed for hours or even a day or two, leaving its fawn curled up in the grass, hiding in plain sight from predators who can’t smell or see it.  Well-meaning, but misguided, people routinely orphan young wildlife by essentially kidnapping them and bringing them to CPW offices, forcing the agency to send them to scarce rehabilitation specialists or put the animals down when no rehabbers exist.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important this spring than ever before that people do not touch or feed young wildlife. CPW offices, visitor centers and transport teams may not be fully

staffed or require limited in-person interactions between our staff and customers.

People are strongly encouraged not to bring young wildlife to CPW or local park offices because the on-site staff may not be there to immediately assist or transport the baby animals.

What to Do If you find young wildlife, enjoy a quick glimpse, leave the animal where it is, and keep pets out of the area. Quietly observe the animal from a distance using binoculars and don't hover so close that the wild parents are afraid to return to the area.

If 24 hours go by and the parent does not return, it is possible the newborn was abandoned or the parent is dead (hit by a

car, for example). Call a CPW office and we will work with a certified wildlife rehabilitation center to get aid for the wildlife, if possible. Do not move the animal.

Reporting Wildlife Concerns Concerned citizens are encouraged to call the CPW Denver Headquarters at 303-297-1192, or any CPW office, if they suspect an animal is injured or abandoned, or to report incidents of feeding or other illegal wildlife activity.

Bears Are Emerging In Colorado; Do Your Part To Be Bear Aware Someone once said that the only things certain in life are death and taxes. But every spring Colorado Parks and Wildlife adds another item to that list: bears emerging from hibernation.

As the weather continues to warm up throughout Colorado, reports of bear sightings are starting to trickle into wildlife offices throughout the state. So now is the time for everyone in Colorado to shift back into bear-aware mode, said Steve McClung, assistant area wildlife manager for CPW in Durango.

“Please remember, we’re getting back into the season when bears are active,” McClung said. “So please, secure your

bear to push it back into wild areas or to trap and move it if necessary. If CPW does not get reports until a bear is breaking into houses or vehicles, officers’ choices are limited.

“The last thing we want to do is put down a bear, every wildlife officer absolutely hates doing that,” McClung said.

“So don’t hesitate to call us as soon as you see any bad behavior, even if it appears minor. That gives us a much better opportunity to correct the situation early.”

Colorado Parks and Wildlife offers these tips and precautions to help you prevent human/wildlife conflicts:

Bird feeders are a major source of bear conflicts. You can instead attract birds naturally with flowering plants and bird baths. Wait until late November to hang feeders again.

Research shows that bears prefer natural sources of food. But they will find sources of human-provided food if it’s available. If bears become habituated to human sources of food they can become dangerous to humans.

CPW also urges residents to report bear problems to local wildlife offices as soon as they see them. If problems are reported early, CPW wildlife officers can use a range of options to deal with the bear. They can tour the neighborhood to look for food sources that are attracting bears, work with residents to correct the situation and set strategies to harass the

items that might become smelly into the freezer until trash day.

Don't leave pet food or stock feed outside.

Bird feeders are a major source of bear/human conflicts. Attract birds naturally with flowers and water baths. Do not hang bird feeders from April 15 to Nov. 15.

Do not attract other wildlife by feeding them, such as deer, turkeys or small mammals.

Don’t allow bears to become comfortable around your house. If you see one, yell at it, throw things at it, make noise to scare it off.

Only put out garbage on the morning of pickup.

Clean garbage cans regularly to keep them free of food odors: ammonia is effective.

Use a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster; available from your trash hauler or on the Internet.

If you don't have secure storage, put

Allow grills to burn for a couple of minutes after cooking to burn off grease and to eliminate odors. Clean the grill after each use.

If you have bee hives, install electric fencing where allowed.

Talk to your neighbors and kids about being bear aware.

Keep garage doors closed.

Cars, traveling and campsites: Lock your doors when you’re away from home and at night.

Keep the bottom floor windows of your house closed when you're not at home.

Do not keep food in your vehicle; roll

up windows and lock the doors of your vehicles.

When car-camping, secure all food and coolers in a locked vehicle when you’re away from camp.

Keep a clean camp, whether you’re in a campground or in the back-country.

When camping in the backcountry, hang food 100 feet or more from campsite; don’t bring any food into your tent Cook food well away from your tent; wash dishes thoroughly.

“IS THE YOUNG MAN SAFE?”

In the Bible we read of a father who had become preoccupied with his own pursuits and failed to be the father he should have been. Suddenly, his son who had grown and gone his own direction in life, raised a rebellion to his father, leading his own army to battle with David.

After one decisive battle a runner came to David with the news of the battle between his forces and those of his son, Absalom. The first words out of David’s mouth were these. “Is the young man safe?” The sad answer to that question caused David to wish that he had been the one who had died, instead of his son, whom he felt he had failed. His question: “Is the young man safe?” was asked all too late.

Every parent needs to take a good look at that question in light of our own children.

Our children are growing up in a very tough world. Someone, several years ago, shared the difference in the world our children were growing up in recently, versus those that characterized our society years before. In the past, the top schools problems were: talking, chewing gum, making noise in class, running in the halls, dressing improperly, and throwing trash on the floors. Those of more contemporary times were: drug abuse, pregnancy, alcohol abuse, suicide, rape, robbery, and assault. Someone wrote recently: “Here’s an eye-opener for all of us today: if you have a child or grandchild that is fourteen and beginning high school, here’s some things to expect by the time they graduate—2/3rds’ of their class will have used drugs, I in 5 will be an alcoholic, 2 in 5 will have consumed 5 or more drinks at one sitting, 46% of babies born out of wedlock will be to kids their own age, 33% of all abortions will be performed on girls their own age, 50% will be sexually active, the second leading cause of death of kids their age at graduation, will be suicide.”

Every parent should ask their child what they see in the school they attend. Hopefully, in our own community, and in their eyes, all will be less prevalent.

One youth specialist has described our current environment in most areas of our country as: a ‘values-effecting’; ‘things-oriented’; ‘chemically dependent’; ‘self-esteem effecting’; ‘sexsaturated’; and ‘media-controlling’ environment…and today all would add ‘violence endangerment’ to this list. And each of these pressures is having an influence on our children, making it difficult for them to determine who they should be in order to make a positive impact on their world and become the best person they can be.

What can we do in our families to help our children? I recommend that you read helpful things about ‘parenting’ by parents who really care and have shared advice with us. (If you missed the powerful letter-to-the-editor entitled “Something Important to Think About’ by a concerned parent in last week’s EPNews, go by the EPNews office and get it and read it.) And there are many other powerful testimonials and articles available to give good advice for parents who, unlike David during Absalom’s early years, really want to know, and care about and for, the youth growing up in their families.

In the meantime consider some of these insights into our children and their needs. In order to be able to cope, every child needs: ‘Significance’---“I am important to my family!’; ‘Security’---“I am safe in my family!’; ‘Acceptance’---“My family accepts me for who I am!”; ‘Love’--“My family loves me and each other!”; ‘Praise’---“I hear and feel praise and positive reinforcement from my family!”; ‘Discipline’---“I need to be lovingly disciplined when I make mistakes so I can learn the importance of doing my best!”

I close with a few words that I use in wedding ceremonies to remind couples of how they can make their marriages the very best. These words are no less needed when parents are searching for ‘keys’ to making their parenting the best it can be. The words are: ‘Commitment’; ‘Communication’; ‘Companionship’; ‘Caring’ and, a fifth word which has a ‘ch’ sound, ‘Kissing’. All are important. When parents are truly committed to their children and giving them a proper place in their hearts; when they talk freely with and listen to their children; when ‘the family plays together’ and does things together, when children know they are loved and ‘cared’ for, and when parents show affection to their children, they will have a much better shot at life. May God help us to do so.

Five Fun Facts About…

The American Avocet By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the American avocet. American avocets do not call Estes Valley home, but you may see them in the spring as they migrate from warmer winter homes to nesting grounds in valleys across the Continental Divide. Avocets also nest in lower elevations of Colorado, such as lakes in Lakewood and reservoirs in Greeley.

1. American avocets are very territorial. To protect their nest and chicks, they will issue a series of call notes that gradually changes pitch. This makes it seem like the birds are approaching faster than they really are.

2. Avocets build their nests in depressions in sand or on mudflats. If the water level rises, they will raise the nest up with sticks, weeds, feathers, or other available material to keep the eggs above water.

An American avocet looks for small aquatic insects in shallow water at sunrise.

3. American avocets are shorebirds that feed by thrusting their bill underwater and then swing it from side to side to stir up aquatic insects.

4. A female avocet can be distinguished from the male by looking at the bill. The female has a shorter but more upcurved bill than the male.

5. The summer breeding plumage of American avocets is a beautiful rust color on their heads and chests with black and white wing and body feathers. In winter, however, the rust fades to pale gray.

Spring snowstorms that pass through Estes Park in April are the best time of year to look for these beautiful birds in our valley. The storms push the birds down to wait out the weather during their spring migration.

American avocet chicks can leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching, and will be able to walk, swim and feed themselves at this point.

Volunteer Spotlight: AARP Tax-Aides Giving Back In Estes April is Volunteer Month. There are scores of individuals and groups of volunteers that should be thanked and congratulated for their tireless service to our community. EPNRC would like to shine a spotlight on one group that is active this time of year: the AARP tax preparation volunteers. There is a good deal of training and policy and procedure that must be observed to do this job. Also, quite a bit of thoughtful time spent inside numbers and new problems to solve.

EPNRC spoke with Don Bryson, who is in his 12th year of service (he aims to get to at least 15 years).

Bryson trains other tax-aides, meets with individuals to prepare their taxes, and makes sure the whole operation stays glued together. He shared with EPNRC how it all works.

How many volunteers are trained? It seems like there is significant retention of volunteers yearover-year.

This year, we had 18 certified counselors who participated in various roles in completing tax returns. Retention is high, because we enjoy providing the service to the community. Some try it and find it's not for them and don't stay long. Currently we have five volunteers with over ten years of service.

It seems like, in a town of highly educated retirees, this might be a stimulating volunteer opportunity. What sort of training do you require volunteers to go through? What sort of experience do most of them bring to the table?

There are no experience requirements.

We do have a few with accounting backgrounds, most have some technical background or are comfortable with numbers and detail oriented. Many decide to volunteer because they are used to doing their own tax returns and want to do it for others. Most years, we put out the word to recruit new people, as we are aware there are always new people moving in that may have the interest and aptitude to join us.

Each year, we provide a series of training classes (generally in January) preparing each volunteer for IRS certification. This training includes simple tests for Standards of Conduct and Interview/Review requirements. Then, there is a more challenging tax proficiency test that is oriented to only what tax issues volunteers are allowed to do in tax returns.

How many hours a week do most volunteers work?

Traditionally in Estes Park, our volunteers work an average of two days a week, totaling about 10 hours. Some of us like to take a few weeks off this time of year to get away, and we usually have enough people to cover.

Who is this service for?

Although Tax-Aide service may be aimed at the elderly and low income, there are no age or income restrictions for our services in Estes. Community members can book an appointment via estesvalleylibrary.org.

Do you have higher demand than supply of volunteers?

Before COVID, we were approaching filing 400 returns in a tax season. Last year, the library had to close for COVID and

we halted service with only about 250 returns filed. This year, it looks like we will be between 250 and 300. We always have appointment space available.

Doing someone’s taxes is a LOT of work and brain power. That is a big give. What do most volunteers “get” out of this?

It is all about serving people in the community. The reward is when we are told over and over how much our services are appreciated. We are not allowed to accept donations, tips, etc (we have accepted cookies on occasion). We encourage those who want to make a donation to give to the Library Friends and Foundation or even the AARP Foundation.

Other than volunteers, what other elements does this program rely on for success?

This program would not be as successful without the Estes Valley Library. Space is provided to us and the library staff have supported us by making taxpayer appointments and handing out packets. This partnership began in 2005 using library computers and internet connections. Today we use our own equipment but still access the internet securely through the library system.

The AARP Foundation, the non-profit arm of AARP, is essential. The Foundation offers a variety of programs, and most do not require AARP membership. The TaxAide program has existed over 50 years with the support of grants and donations from government, corporations, and private citizens. They provide all our equipment (computers, printers and supplies) plus training materials to supplement standard IRS publications. The volunteer organization starts at our national HQ in DC with the country divided into regions, states, districts, then sites like Estes Park.

Colorado has had about 45 sites. The Estes Park site has performed extremely well when compared to early statistics from other states and within Colorado.

Is there a party at the end??

I hope so because we all need it! Usually, we do an after-tax meal somewhere to tell stories, compare experiences, learn about our site statistics, and have real fun together.

Estes Park Women’s Golf Association Season Of Competition And Friendship Begins May 4th — Welcoming New Members

The Estes Park Women’s 18 Hole Golf Association (EPWGA) is excited to announce the start of the new season. In recent years the Estes Park Golf Course celebrated its 100th anniversary. The Estes Park Golf and Country Club was incorporated in 1917 with some of the most notable members of the community on its Board of Directors, including

F.O. Stanley. Today the golf course is operated by the Estes Valley Park and Recreation District.

During the season on every Tuesday morning 30-40 enthusiastic and excited women arrive at the Estes Park Golf Course. They are all eager to place their $5 into the weekly winnings pot that will be divided amongst the most skilled and luckiest golfers winning the game of the day.

This ritual has taken place during the months of May through September for many years. It marks the time of the year where old friends become reacquainted and new friends are made. The new golf season is here and we are anx-

Dear Friends, As the pandemic seems to have cooled and I have my vaccine shots, I have decided to participate in my final Global Volunteer projects- Africa and Poland.

As many of you know I have been engaged in a number of Global Volunteer initiatives in the countries of China, Cuba, Poland, Vietnam and Africa. This fall, I will be volunteering in programs I help initiate.

In addition to having installed water wells in Africa, I will be working with Global Volunteers in Tanzania in addressing the issue of stunting through the Reaching Children’s Potential Demonstration Program. Stunting is a devastating condition that robs children of their future. Stunting begins in utero.

If it is not stopped within the 1,000 day window from pregnancy to the 2nd birthday, it most often is permanent. Global Volunteers is involved in five villages with a variety of interventions. Research shows that our efforts are working.

In Poland I will continue working with local rural schools in teaching conversational English to students and teachers.

Knowledge of English is essential for students seeking higher education and meaningful employment.

How much of our brain structure is developed before the age of 5? Would you guess … 25%, 50%, 75%?

The amazing answer: 90%. Babies, infants, and toddlers may not be able to form sentences, but their brains rapidly absorb the words, stories, songs, and positive play-time we give them. Feelings, behaviors, language, learning — it’s all being developed.

Early learning is crucial. It leads to better grades in school, higher graduation rates, and even lowered crime rates.

We at the library, the school, and EVICS (Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success) are concerned by a recent trend: only 36% of Estes Valley kids arrive for their first day of Kindergarten meeting school-readiness benchmarks. That’s why our three organizations are working to connect families with essential early-literacy resources.

We’re spotlighting two special opportunities to make those connections. April is the Month of the Young Child, and the first week of May brings it all together.

First is Kindergarten Round-Up— Monday, May 3—for kids starting school this fall. It’s the launching pad for the Class of 2034! Schedule an appointment at estesschools.org/epes.

That same week, it’s the Be Ready Fair (as in “be ready for school and lifelong learning”) on Thursday, May 6 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. It’s for every family with kids age 0 to 8.

Everything families need is all bundled together. Cruise into the Elementary School parking lot for a drive-through treasure-trove of free early-learning goodies: books, backpacks, hands-on activities, snacks, and more. Kids will enjoy seeing cheerful costumed characters, and bright shiny fire trucks too.

Claud Raymond Alkire, Jr. Claud Raymond Alkire, Jr., 78, of the Retreat in Glen Haven, CO died on Monday, April 12, 2021 at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO. He died of complications from a stroke. Claud was born in Montebello Rural, CA on August 17, 1942 to Claud Raymond Alkire and Ruth Marie (Snoddy) Alkire.

Claud grew up east of Los Angeles in West Covina, CA at a time when their closest neighbor was 1/4 mile across the road. He graduated from West Covina High School in 1960 where he was involved in gymnastics and track. He studied Art for a year at Mount San Antonio Community College before changing majors and going on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1967 from California Polytechnic College in Pomona, CA. He wanted to study Aeronautical Engineering but the job market had closed.

After college Claud joined the Peace

Corps and was assigned a post teaching Physics and Math in Cameroon, West Africa. He counted his time in the Peace Corps as one of the highlights of his life and had 600 slides of his memories. He shared his slides with the elementary school African program for three years in Estes Park, CO. While in Cameroon, he climbed Mt. Cameroon three times. He always enjoyed climbing the highest peaks of states and countries.

Claud’s love of the mountains began as a boy growing up at the foothills of the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains. He climbed every mountain in that range including 10 ascents of Mt. Baldy, his favorite. His love of hiking and climbing mountains continued throughout his life. He also scaled Mt. Whitney, San Jacinto and Mt. San Gorgonio among many others in California. After two

Walter Banfield Jr. Walter Allen Banfield Jr. of Estes Park, CO passed away April 10, 2021 at 12:34 p.m. Walter was born August 19th, 1952 in Jessup, Maryland, but lived most of his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Nathan Hale high school in 1970.

In Walt’s early career he was the co-owner of Long Branch Recording Studios, in Tulsa, OK. He worked as a location sound engineer for movies, television and documentaries. For most of his career, Walt held multiple positions in the broadcast media industry and became a master in video engineering.

He married Mary Ellen Banfield in 1983. Walter and Mary Ellen moved to Parker, CO in 1996 and to Estes Park, CO in 2006. Walter loved living in Estes Park for the past 15 years and loved being a part of the community.

Walter is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Banfield of Estes Park, CO, his

children, Christopher Banfield and wife Tiffany Banfield of Fort Collins, CO, Michael Banfield and wife Mary Banfield of Overland Park, KS, Angela Chesser and husband Steve Chesser of Tulsa, OK, and Brian Banfield of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, Madalyn Banfield, Chloe Hyatt and husband Matthew Hyatt, Noah Draeger, Claire Draeger, Sophie Banfield and Gretchen Banfield. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Banfield Sr. and Joan Banfield.

years in the Peace Corps, he headed to Europe where he climbed the highest peaks in Yugoslovia, (Mt. Triglov); in Greece (Mt. Olympus) and Mt. Blanc in France. Before climbing Mt. Blanc, he purchased a Bianchi bicycle in Italy, riding over the Col du Petit-SaintBernard Pass in the Alps to France where, upon arriving in the village, he was applauded by many for his feat. He had his sights on the Matterhorn while atop Mt. Blanc, but grew homesick. He traveled a total of 600 miles on his bike in all.

In 1970, after returning from Europe, he met his forever love, Vicki, or “Victoria” as he endearingly called her, who was visiting his mother in Huntington Beach for spring break with her best friend from high school who later married his brother. Vicki came in sporting pigtails, sat down on the floor and said “hi!” He immediately said to himself, “Well, there she is.” Their first date, of course, was climbing a mountain: Mt. Islip. He told his mother that if he ever found a gal who would climb mountains with him, she’d be the one. They were married on June 26, 1971 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in La Habra, CA. They had two children, Matthew and Meghan and two grandchildren, Aria Skye and Alistair.

Claud had minor jobs after the Peace Corps until he was hired by the federal government in 1972 relocating to Minneapolis, MN as an Investigator/Inspector for the Food and Drug Administration. While in Minnesota he enjoyed its great outdoors canoeing, camping and cross- country skiing. He also climbed the highest point in the state, Eagle Mountain, at just 2400 feet.

Two years later when the Consumer Product Safety Commission was formed from the FDA, he changed agencies, working for CPSC for two years. He changed agencies again to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and two years later was transferred to Fort Collins, CO as a Computer Specialist until his retirement in 2001.

Claud was so happy to return to the mountains. In keeping with his dream of living in the mountains since a child, he and Vicki built a log home in the Retreat in Glen Haven, CO in 1986 where he lived until his death. He didn’t “bag” all the 14ers, but climbs included: Mt. Elbert (the highest peak in Colorado), Longs Peak (three times), Chapin, Chaquita, Ypsilon, Desolation Peaks, Mount of the Holy Cross, Mt. Meeker, Mt. Lady Washington, Mummy Mountain, Hagues Peak, Flattop Mountain, Hallett Peak, Mount Richthofen, Mount Ida, Estes Cone, Isolation Peak and Twin Sisters.

After his retirement, he returned to Africa with Vicki visiting dear friends in Zimbabwe. On that trip, he also traveled to the UK where he fell in love with Scotland, land of his ancestry.

They returned to Scotland in 2005 for two months of touring by train, ending on the Isle of Skye, his favorite, where his daughter was married as gale-force

winds blew into Skye from Hurricane Katrina. Other travels took him to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, the Caribbean and many other destinations in the United States.

Claud was an artist. He did a stippling technique with pen and ink, mostly of wildlife. His pieces adorn the walls of his log home as well as those of family and friends.

Other interests were many. He loved anything UFOs. He would have liked to be abducted, but only experienced odd lights on the top of the switchbacks one night. One favorite genre of reading and television was Science Fiction. His love for space never ended. He loved astronomy, star gazing and had a 6” and 12” telescope and was, for a time, a member of the Astronomy Club in Estes Park, CO. While visiting his son and daughterin-law in Florida, he toured the Kennedy Space Center twice seeing the space shuttle Atlantis and the Saturn V. Being a native of California, he became an avid scuba diver and body surfer, enjoyed sailing and loved the beach. He and Vicki crossed the “26 miles across the sea” to Catalina Island many times for special getaways. His favorite musical artists were John Denver, whom he saw in concert five times, and beloved Scottish Festival singer, Alex Beaton. He was obsessed with getting good mileage and owned two Volkswagen diesels and a Prius C. Laurel and Hardy were his favorites and he passed this love on to both his children and grandchildren. He loved sweets of any kind, especially pie, vanilla ice cream and any type of snack cake which he called “goodies.”

Many times he would “eat dessert first.”

Claud was a quiet, unassuming man, a good man who loved being with his family and spending time with dear friends. He was Vicki’s “Baber” and “Grumpy” to Aria and Alistair. At times he earned his name, but he loved his grandchildren dearly and they loved him. His spirituality was the mountains and the nature that surrounded him. He will be missed beyond words and loved forever.

Claud was preceded in death by his father, Claud Alkire Sr. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vicki Alkire of Glen Haven, his mother Ruth Alkire of Joshua Tree, CA; his children Matthew (Lisa Mills) Alkire of Orlando, FL and Meghan (Jason) Rademacher of Glen Haven; his grandchildren Aria Skye and Alistair Rademacher of Glen Haven; brothers Ronnie (Linda) Alkire of Joshua Tree, CA and Jerry (Linda) Alkire of Coeur d’Alene, ID. He also had numerous, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID, a Celebration of his Life will be held this summer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 53, Glen Haven, CO 80532.
