Trail Ridge Road Snowplowing Every year, Rocky Mountain National Park snowplow operators begin plowing Trail Ridge Road in mid-April.

Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States reaching 12,183 feet in elevation.

Crews from the west side of the park and crews from the east side of the park move along the road and eventually meet near the Alpine Visitor Center. Park plow operators normally encounter drifts from 18 to 22 feet and are accustomed to plowing the same section of road over and over. Trail Ridge Road was completed in 1932.

The earliest the road has opened was on May 7, 2002; the latest June 26, 1943. In 2011, the road opened on June 6.

Due to recent spring snowstorms park plow operators are experiencing significant drifts and snowpack at high elevations along the road. More snow is forecast for next week.

Trail Ridge Road is a federal highway - therefore Rocky Mountain National Park staff manage, maintain and plow Trail Ridge Road. CDOT is not involved in the operations, maintenance or plowing of Trail Ridge Road.

Town Of Estes Park Offers Food Tax Refunds To Qualified Residents During May Each year, the Town of Estes Park offers refunds of sales tax paid on food items to qualified residents. Applicants must have lived within the boundaries of the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District during the entire 12 months of 2018, have an income within the guidelines in the table below, and fall within one of the following categories: Resident families with dependent children under the age of 18 in 2018; residents who are disabled and received disability income in 2018; and, residents who were at least 65

years of age in 2018.

Food tax refund applications are now available at the Finance Department at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and at www.estes.org/finance. Applications will be accepted through May 31, 2019. With the completed application, applicants must provide copies of proof of residency and income, and any other documents required by the application guidelines.

Platte River Names New General Counsel Following a nationwide search process, the Platte River Power Authority Board of Directors today announced that Sarah Dennison-Leonard will succeed Joe Wilson as the organization’s next general counsel.

“Sarah brings outstanding experience to a job that is vital to Platte River’s success as an energy provider,” said Todd Jirsa, chair of the Platte River Board and Mayor of Estes Park. “She has distinguished herself in the utility sector for many years and managed numerous issues that align directly with our business needs.”

Dennison-Leonard will succeed Joe Wilson who has served as Platte River’s general counsel since 2007. Wilson announced his retirement in early 2019 and will conclude his service on May 24.

Craig Johnson, senior deputy general counsel, will serve as interim general counsel through a planned transition period. Dennison-Leonard will lead a team of ten legal and compliance profession-

als. Dennison-Leonard will begin her work with Platte River on Aug. 5.

Since 1999, Dennison-Leonard has served as outside general counsel and corporate secretary for the Northwest Power Pool. From private practice, she represented several Midwestern utilities and joint action agencies concerning many legal issues, including significant transmission development projects as well as other transactional and regulatory proceedings. Dennison-Leonard earned her juris doctorate from Stanford Law School in 1994 and currently works for Marten Law in Portland.

Plan Ahead For Spring Runoff In the Estes Valley, spring runoff typically starts in April and peaks in June.

Each spring there is a chance that warmer temperatures and higher than average snow packs will result in higher flows and rising water levels along streams and rivers throughout the Estes Valley. Sudden, prolonged warm spells combined with heavy rains increase the chances of localized flooding. The 2013 flood changed local rivers and streams – some channels are wider and deeper and can carry more water; others are shallower and narrower and can carry less water. The ground also remains saturated from recent precipitation.

Local floodplain managers cannot predict the effects of the upcoming runoff, but there is always a potential for heavy flows.

The Town’s Public Works Department has an action plan for minor and major flood events. Each year staff prepare sand bags, equipment and concrete barriers for short-notice deployment to public areas prone to flooding so that roads, bridges, utilities and public safety are protected.

Owners of property along rivers and streams are encouraged to clear debris and excess sediments where needed to preserve maximum channel capacity. It is ultimately every citizen’s responsibility to protect their own private property and to consider how risks on his or her property affect neighbors upstream and downstream. The Town of Estes Park encourages residents to reach out to their neighbors and work together to address potential problems. Some actions private property owners can take to protect property are: 1. Stabilize undercut and unstable river banks and reduce blockage potential a. Cut down unstable trees (leave stump and roots in place) that could fall and block water flow along the channel or at downstream bridges and culverts. b. Leave existing roots and small woody and vegetative debris on riverbanks to reduce flow velocities and resist bank erosion. c. Apply quick-growing seed mixes to

bare stream banks, such as Regreen (Triticum aestivum) and other cover crops (i.e., annual species that germinate quickly). d. Selectively remove problematic debris from river; permits required; contact the Town for assistance. e. Permits for work in the floodplain are required and available to residents within the Town limits by contacting the Town of Estes Park’s Floodplain Engineer, Greg Gladov, at ggladov@estes.org or 970577-3577. He is available to provide mitigation advice during the permit process.

2. Prevent or reduce flood water damage using sand bags or hydro barriers. a. Bags can only be placed adjacent to buildings to divert water around buildings, NOT in the river channels or on the banks as this can interfere with stream flow. Look for supplies at local hardware stores. b. In the case of an emergency with sudden marked increases in river levels, the Town may open its sand facility for residents to fill their own bags. If necessary, details will be announced at www.estes.org, www.facebook.com/townofestesparkco, and www.twitter.com/townofestespark.

3. Consider purchasing flood insurance for peace of mind. Because the Town of Estes Park participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, all properties are eligible to purchase flood insurance, not just those that are required to hold flood insurance by lenders. Purchase flood insurance with your local agent or at www.Floodsmart.gov. New policies have a 30-day waiting period before they go into effect, so the time to purchase is now.

Finally, the Town of Estes Park requests residents notify the Police Department at 970-586-4000 if they observe water leaving the banks of any river in Estes Park during runoff.

Town Board And County Commissioners To Discuss Stormwater Utility May 15 The Estes Park Town Board and Larimer County Board of Commissioners will hold a joint meeting Wednesday, May 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. The boards will discuss the proposed Estes Valley Stormwater Management Program and the associated utility. The public is encouraged to attend and comment. Comments may also be submitted to the Town Clerk at Town Hall (Room 130) or by emailing townclerk@estes.org by 5 p.m. on May 13. This meeting will be streamed live and recorded for viewing later at www.estes.org/videos.

A potential Stormwater Management Program could help reduce future flood damages, reduce the number of properties located within floodplain boundaries, and reduce the cost of flood insurance for private property owners. The project could be managed by a new utility, and funded in part by fees assessed on properties within the Estes Valley, sales tax or grants. Staff will present results from the most recent public outreach process and discuss options for funding this program. At a future date, the boards will determine if this program will proceed and how it would be funded.

Property owners have provided valuable feedback on this important topic during outreach efforts in 2018 and 2019.

A survey in 2018 indicated the public wanted detailed information on potential fees. Once this information became available, staff conducted the most recent

survey which resulted in over 900 responses and thousands of comments. The results from all of the outreach are posted on the Stormwater webpage, www.estes.org/stormwater.

To summarize: 63% agree stormwater drainage problems exist.

70% agree the Town and County should act to address flooding risk.

52% indicate a user fee of some amount should be part of the program funding solution; 48% feel the user fees should be zero or less than 5% of the program costs.

71% suggest a sales tax should be used to fund 40% to 100% of the program costs.

53% of respondents feel grants should pick up more than 20% of the program cost; 95% feel grants should provide more than 5% of the program revenue. [Note: additional local match funds (typically 20% -50%) are required in order to receive grant funding.]

71% feel the proposed stormwater management fees are too high.

71% favor funding some type of stormwater utility; 30% want it to start now; 29% want a different approach, such as not moving forward.

Library Installation Of HVAC Units Is Complete The Estes Valley Library was closed last Monday to allow for the replacement of several HVAC units on the library roof.

The installations were successfully completed that same day.

These planned upgrades included the replacement of a quarter-century-old heating and cooling system. The new units will operate more efficiently and reliably, with easier ability to control temperature and airflow.

In 2016, the Estes Park in Bloom committee launched a program to recognize local businesses who put an emphasis on beautifully maintained landscapes, floral displays and a tidy store front. In 2018, the program expanded to include “Neighborhood Bright Spots,” honoring residents’ efforts at their homes. The Committee is excited to announce the expansion of these popular programs to recognize community efforts beyond just landscaping. “Estes Bright Spot” will honor organizations, private residents and businesses for environmental efforts and heritage programs, arts and culture, as well as beautifully maintained landscapes and floral displays. The committee expects to present awards throughout the year.

On April 19 at 1:10 a.m. police stopped a 33 year old male driver from Thornton, CO in the 800 block of Big Thompson Ave. for weaving. Upon investigation, the driver was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was charged with DUI, DUI per se and a lane use violation and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On April 20 at 8:56 p.m. police received a call about a disturbance at 1580 Fall River Road. Upon arrival they charged a 39 year old male from Greeley, CO with two counts of protection order violations with a domestic violence enhancer. The victim was 31 years old. The male was charged and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On April 23 at 9:05 a.m. police received a report of a male, passed out in a vehicle at 501 Aspen Ave. Upon investiga-

tion police found a 43 year old transient who was wanted on two warrants out of Alamosa County. The warrants were for failure to appear on a DUI charge and driving under restraint. The male was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On April 28 at 9:35 p.m. police arrived at 233 Third Street and arrested a 58 year old male from Estes Park who was wanted on a warrant from Boulder County for an assault charge. The male was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On April 28 at 1:24 a.m. police stopped a 20 year old female driver from Ashville, NC in the 800 block of Moraine Ave. for speeding. Upon further investigation the female was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. She was charged with DUI, DUI per se, underage possession of alcohol and a speed limit violation. She was later released to a responsible person.

Rabies In Steer Reminds Livestock Owners To Vaccinate The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment (LCDHE) has confirmed rabies in a steer in Larimer County. This marks the first transmission of rabies to a mammal other than a skunk in 2019. So far 26 skunks have been confirmed positive with rabies in Larimer County this year.

In Larimer County, positive rabies is most normally found in skunks and bats but does occasionally cross into other species.

So far this year Larimer County has the highest confirmed rabies infection in animals across the state of Colorado. Skunk rabies may pose a greater risk to pets and livestock because—as ground-based animals—they may interact more with animals than bats.

Rabies is spread primarily by saliva through the bite of a rabid animal. Once symptoms of rabies infection appear, there is no cure and the infection is fatal. People that have been exposed to rabies can receive medication treatment to prevent illness.

The first positive rabies infection in a steer is a reminder that even livestock need to be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian

to help protect to help protect human caretakers from being exposed to rabies.

LCDHE reminds pet and livestock owners to keep their animals up-to-date on rabies vaccinations to prevent lengthy and costly quarantines—or even euthanasia—if they have an encounter with a rabid animal. Livestock owners should check with their veterinarians about rabies vaccinations for their horses, cattle, and other livestock.

Ways to protect you and your family: • Do not feed or touch wildlife.

• Teach children to observe wildlife from a distance and to notify an adult if there is a wild animal in the area or if they are bitten or scratched.

• Eliminate food sources for wild animals by not feeding pets outdoors, closing pet doors especially at night, and tightly closing garbage cans and feed bins.

• Ensure that your pets, horses and livestock are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.

New Regulations For 2019 Help Keep Open Spaces Wild, Natural We’re experiencing consistently warmer days in Larimer County, which means more and more visitors will be flocking to the County’s parks and open spaces.

Before heading out to enjoy these amazing places, visitors should be aware of a few new or amended regulations intended to keep open spaces wild places where people can connect with nature: Drones and other radio-controlled devices are not allowed. Enjoy the natural environment!

Radios, portable speakers and soundprojecting devices are prohibited. Let nature provide its soundtrack for a hike or ride!

Class 1 and 2 electric-powered bicycles, or e-bikes, are allowed on paved trails, but e-bikes of any class are not allowed on natural surface trails.

“Our open spaces were conserved for a variety of reasons, including their ability to provide outdoor recreation opportunities and to protect habitat for wildlife and plants,” said Ken Brink Jr., visitor services manager. “We strive to maintain a balance between recreation and conservation and know that for many visitors, the

allure of our open spaces is a chance to connect with nature. We understand that most of our visitors use our properties as an escape from modern life, so we took a ‘keep it wild and natural’ approach when considering these updates to our regulations.”

Rangers will be approaching these new regulations with education in mind, ensuring visitors are aware of the new rules.

However, failure to follow any of these regulations could result in a $75 fine.

“We know some of our visitors will not be aware of these new rules when they hit the trail,” Brink said, “so we’ll be providing education and information whenever practical.”

The new and amended regulations involved a thorough public review through the County’s Parks and Open Lands citizen advisory boards and two public discussions with the Larimer County Board of County Commissioners. The commissioners adopted these regulations, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2019.

If you were to ask what flower is associated with Mother’s Day, most people would say the rose. But my answer would be the iris. Here’s why:

By Mother’s Day each year, when the foliage around the yard was young and timid, the south side of our house would be crowded with a host of blooming iris.

(The plural of iris is—iris.) They were sunshine yellow, periwinkle blue, velvety purple, and white stained with splashes of other colors. We could peek around the corner from the driveway and we’d see a full rainbow of the fluttery flowers with sword-like leaves, leaning toward the heat of the sun, elbowing each other for space.

The bulbs of these stately flowers, which aren’t really bulbs but rhizomes, came from my grandma’s house in Iowa.

Gram divided her iris every few years and gave some to my mother, whose green thumb was closer to the gray color of moldy bread. Mom didn’t water, weed, nourish, divide, or in any other way tend that wall of flowers but by golly, they not only survived, they thrived!

Once the flowers were bursting forth, Mom would cut them and place them in vases in every room in the house. The cut flowers didn’t last long, but that temporary pleasure is what made them precious. If they lasted forever, they would lose some of their appeal. (Isn’t that true of all flowers? I walk past a heavy-laden lilac in my neighborhood and stop to inhale its sweet, intoxicating fragrance every day while it’s in bloom. Once the blooms are spent, I begin looking forward to next year when they’ll return. If they remained year round, I would probably get used to them and eventually cease my daily scentsory stop.)

The iris has a lot of character. Its name

is the Greek word for rainbow, which is apropos because there are so many color variations found among iris. Although purple is the most common iris color (think of those magical Rocky Mountain iris that bloom in profusion in the field along Fish Creek Road by Rockwood Estates), you can find the showy flower in the entire ROY G. BIV spectrum. The bloom has a body part called a peduncle (love it!), it has drooping sepals called falls, it has flags that wave pollinators over to do their job and the flowers are often bearded. The scallop-edged, flirty iris is no wallflower; she’s the belle of the ball (well, except for the fact that she’s bearded)!

The iris is the state flower of Tennessee.

The fleur-de-lis is a stylized iris (who knew?) and that fleur-de-lis appears in the logo of the New Orleans Saints football team. It is also the universal symbol for scouting. Gin brands such as Bombay Sapphire and Magellan sometimes use iris flowers for flavor and color. Honest.

Last fall, days before my parents sold their home of 45 years, my affiliate Joe dug up a few dozen of those iris plants from the south side of the house and gave them to me so that I could carry on the tradition of growing and appreciating the flower that reminds me of my grandma and my mom. They are blooming now, just in time for Mother’s Day. I plan to cut some and make them into a corsage for my mom to wear on Mother’s Day. As Colorado’s private and public forests recover from insect and disease outbreaks and other disturbances, humans and wildlife are adjusting to significant environmental changes. Spruce beetle and mountain pine beetle outbreaks may have changed the way you recreate, but have you thought about how wildlife are responding?

That’s precisely the question research scientists from Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service attempted to answer in a recently published paper in the journal Ecosphere: Mammalian responses to changed forest conditions resulting from bark beetle outbreaks in the southern Rocky Mountains.

“It’s such a far-reaching event, both in terms of the amount of the state impacted and how far into the future this impact will ripple,” said author Jake Ivan, a Senior Scientist in the Mammals Research Section of Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “As a first cut, we wanted to try to get a handle on how various species altered their use of these impacted areas, and we focused on lodgepole pine and spruce-fir systems as those two types of subalpine forest were hardest hit [by mountain pine beetle and spruce beetle, respectively].”

To do this, the researchers hired a team of technicians to deploy game cameras at 300 randomly located sites in subalpine forests across the state. The sites represented a gradient of beetle activity from green forests (no beetles) to forests that had been impacted more than a decade prior to sampling. The cameras were mounted low to the ground and pointed at a “lure tree” where a piece of wool, soaked in that most universal of all wildlife lures – peanut butter - was tied. This setup allowed researchers to obtain photos of the various mammalian species living in the vicinity, from chipmunks to moose.

The effort returned over 300,000 photos of 26 species. “As is often the case with big changes to a landscape,” Ivan said, “the response varied widely by species. There were species that responded positively and used these impacted areas more intensely, some species that responded negatively, and others that didn’t seem to care at all.”

Ungulates were among the big winners in this changed system, although their response varied. Elk, for example, tended to increase their use of impacted

areas in the decade after a beetle outbreak, responding most strongly in areas where the beetle impact was most severe (more dead trees). Use of beetleimpacted areas by moose, however, increased immediately after trees died, peaked 3 - 7 years after the outbreak, then declined. Mule deer showed increasing use of beetle-impacted areas with each year after an outbreak, but unlike elk, their use was not strongly related to severity. Researchers attribute increased use to increased forage and hiding cover available as understory and shrub cover increases once the forest canopy opens up.

Red squirrels were among the few species to be negatively impacted. “I imagine their decreased use is largely related to the loss of cone crops, which take a big hit when all of the mature trees in a stand die,” Ivan said. “That’s the main food source for squirrels in these systems, and storing those cones in middens so they can get at them later is what helps get them through the winter.”

While the response of some species is easily explained, for others, an easy explanation doesn’t exist. Pine martens, for instance, commonly prey on red squirrels, yet use of beetle-impacted stands by pine martens did not follow the noticeable decline of red squirrels.

Instead, marten use remained completely unchanged through time, regardless of severity of the outbreak.

According to Ivan, “This project gave us a better understanding of what to expect in the coming years as beetles finish their march through the green forests in the state. It gives us a sense of issues that may arise both in the nongame world, and in the game world.”

For instance, results from this project suggest that snowshoe hares, the primary food source for threatened Canada lynx, may weather the bark beetle outbreaks largely unscathed. However, lynx may be at increased risk during years of low hare abundance when they would normally turn to red squirrels to get them through.

On the game side, scientists expect that in some areas, elk will focus their habitat use in severely impacted areas during early season hunts. However, access and travel in these patches is difficult for hunters due to down timber. So, Continued next page

“On the one hand, it is a bit sad to see all of these dead trees on the landscape,” Ivan concedes, “but on the other, we’re witnessing a once-in-a-millennia event, and Colorado is ground zero. It’s quite a spectacle from an ecological perspective.”

Bark beetles-Bark beetles are native to Colorado and have been around for eons. Their life cycle involves burrowing into the inner bark of mature trees as

adults and laying eggs in “galleries.” The eggs hatch into larvae, which then travel through the bark, eating and growing.

Eventually the larvae pupate into adults, which exit the bark, fly to another tree and start the process anew. The loss of inner bark from adult and larval activity interrupts the flow of water and nutrients and kills the tree. Large expanses of mature forest across the west, coupled with climate changes that simultaneously stress trees (i.e., drought) while boosting insect productivity have created current epidemic conditions.

Old Hams, is set in the Ophelia L. Davis Home for Actors, Musicians and Singers in Burbank, California. The residents have called this home for over 40 years, but their friend and former owner of the home, Ophelia Davis, died leaving the older performers in a terrible predicament. The taxes are due and if they can’t be raised, the son of Ophelia’s attorney, Ben, will sell the house so he can make millions when the land is used for a shopping mall. At wit’s end, the performers turn to Ophelia’s Granddaughter and a nephew for help. Using all their acting skills, some clever disguises and a missing lottery ticket, they manage to turn a garage sale into a hilarious showdown. worth. Minister Paul Pitt, choir director, Barbie Cue and several choir members quickly decide to submit Barbie Cue’s mother’s secret barbecue recipe to a contest and even open a barbeque restaurant in the church to raise money.

Meanwhile, Miss Phit, the bumbling church secretary is constantly getting the bulletin and newsletters wrong, sending misleading and funny information out to the congregation. However, she is also the one who saves the day.

Why Does My Doctor Need To Know All My Medications?

Medication Management is identified as the most common patient safety concern in the United States.

Many people are seen in multiple health care settings like a hospital, emergency room or specialists’ office. In each setting medications can be prescribed or updated by the health care provider and can be recorded in multiple patient health records.

New festival will include weekend of health & wellness activities near Rocky Mountain National Park 10K Race to benefit Rocky Mountain Conservancy The inaugural WelldernessTM festival is scheduled in Estes Park, May 31st through June 2nd, 2019. Wellderness is a weekend of health and fitness with a full schedule of activities including a 6k and a 10k run that will benefit the Rocky Mountain Conservancy.

Event organizer, John Cimperman, stated, “When we developed the concept for Wellderness, we thought Estes Park would be the ideal place to launch the event. The natural beauty of Estes Park, its venues, and the local community support provides all the ingredients for a successful event.” Cimperman added, “We really hope the local community participates in the festival, whether joining us on the trails or attending the

health expo up at the Ridgeline Hotel.”

In addition to the trail runs that start Saturday morning, the Wellderness festival will host a health expo at the Ridgeline Hotel. This expo will be highlighted by a presentation from former Olympic skier and NFL player, Jeremy Bloom. In addition, the Wellderness health expo will feature Juli Rathke, Founder/Publisher of YOGA+Life Magazine, elite marathoner, Jenni Nettik, and Brittany Charboneau, also know as the “Funny Runner,” who intersects comedy with the world of competitive running. 2019 Fit Family 5 K & Children’s Fitness Jamboree Sat. May 18 At Stanley Park

Lifelong Learning of Estes Valley is having their 12th Annual Fit Family 5 K and Children’s Jamboree next weekend, featuring a 5K Run/Walk around Lake Estes for adults and children age 10+.

Younger children ages three through nine can participate in a Jamboree of field activities at Stanley Park testing how fast they can run, kick a soccer ball, throw, jump and more.

While parents and older children walk/run the 5K course around the lake, younger children have fun with the field events led by the LLEV staff and parent volunteers. This is a run for fun and adults of all ages are encouraged to come out and walk the course as well.

Strollers are welcome but leave your dog at home.

Estes Park Jazz Big Band And Village Band To Perform First Summer Concert

The Estes Park Jazz Big Band and Village Band will perform the first concert of their summer season in a combined concert on Sunday, May 12. The free concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Estes Park High School Theater.

The Jazz Big Band has been performing for the Estes Park community and its visitors for 27 years while the Village Band has been performing for 37 years.

Chuck Varilek will lead the Jazz Big Band. Conducting duties for the Village Band will be shared by Loren Johnson, Jeff Klintberg and Varilek.

The Jazz Big Band will kick off the concert with a mix of different styles, including Dave Brubeck’s “Moody” and Count Basie’s “One O’Clock Jump.”

Trombonist Curtis Fox will be a featured soloist on “Bein’ Green” and will join Nick Frazee (tenor sax) and Loren Johnson (trumpet) in a Dixieland combo on “Ain’t She Sweet.”

After a short intermission to reset the stage, the Village Band will begin their

portion of the concert, featuring a revolving door on the podium with Johnson, Klintberg and Varilek all taking a turn. The audience will be treated to several different compositions for band including Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide” and Gabriel Faure’s “Pavane.” Music of Scotland will be featured on “By Loch And Mountain” and a tribute to the Navy, “Guardians Of The Seas.” “Heroic Sketches,” a recent composition by Ed Huckeby will get your heart racing as will the G. H. Huffine march, “Basses On A Rampage.”

The Estes Park Jazz Big Band and Estes Park Village Band are community bands made up of adult and high school musicians from the Estes Park area as well as from surrounding communities. New members are always welcome to perform with the band. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in the Estes Park High School bandroom.

Courageous Grandparenting Conference May 24-25 Mountain View Bible Fellowship at 1575 South St. Vrain here is Estes Park is hosting the Courageous Grandparenting Conference. This event will start on Friday evening May 24th at 6:00 p.m., then resume Saturday morning May 25th at 9:00 a.m. This conference is a unique presentation for grandparents, or parents who want their parents to be intentional about the way they fulfill their biblical roles as grandparents. Cavin Harper, Executive Director and founder of the Christian Grandparenting Network, will be the presenter for this one-day conference.

“Being a good grandparent is not enough,” says CGN founder, Cavin Harper, “especially for Christian grandparents. We are called to live courageously and intentionally making much of Christ and the Gospel, and helping the next generations walk in the truth.”

Harper says the Courageous Grandparenting conference is more than another

event, but part of a larger, growing grandparent movement. “I don’t want this to be just another program,” he says.

“I want to launch a movement of courageous grandparents resolved to link arms with other grandparents to build a legacy of faith that outlives them.

It will require courage, understanding the times in which we live, and wisdom to know what to do. This conference casts the vision so that leaders from this community can carry the vision and build the movement to live for the next generations.”

So what if you’re not a photographer and just love seeing and reading about bears? Here is something to ponder.

Have you ever shared photos on social media that portray a bear in an unnatural situation and pawned it off as “cute”?

Those viral videos and photographs of bears playing in hot tubs or entertaining themselves on a child’s backyard swing breed copy cat individuals looking for internet fame. Sadly, there are countless instances of people intentionally trying to lure bears into their backyards, most of which are probably for nefarious reasons. And yes, luring a bear to your backyard simply to get a “cute” video or picture to show to your friends is nefarious. Studies show that bears that hang around human developments often have significantly shorter life-spans due to increased threats. In other words, they die prematurely. Yet, people still think it’s cool to have bears in town or around their house or neighborhood.

Believe it or not, if you visit or stay in rental cabins in bear country and read through the logbook, you’ll often read how many times people intentionally place or “innocently” place food around the cabin so they can better see the bears. Never does one realize or think about how these actions possibly lead to a dead bear, but damn, that sure is cute.

Bottom line folks, prematurely killing a bear is NOT something we want to be a part of. I do not think many folks reading this have a direct hand in a bear’s death but most of us exhibit behaviors that are bad for bears. So let’s do our part and not turn a blind eye to our actions anymore. You now know your actions have consequences. And by all means don’t vilify those that may unknowingly be doing the things mentioned in this article. They may truly be ignorant and not know of the consequences of their actions so now is your chance to educate! Be nice and be knowledgeable.

When it comes to doing right by the bears, let’s start by taking a look in the mirror and correcting the actions of that person first. After all, it’s not for you, it’s for the bears.

Estes Valley Chamber Singers Concertâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Sunday, May 19th at PCCR Apr 30 - May6, 2019

The Estes Valley Chamber Singers, under the direction of Rich Dixon, will be presenting their annual spring concert on Sunday, May 19th at 2:00 p.m. Rich has put together a wide variety of music, which will have something for everyone.

This program will be quite different from those in the past. The first half will feature soloists Scott Anderson, Anna Baker, and a wonderful find, Henry Thomas. Henry is 12 years old and in the seventh grade here in Estes. He will be the featured soloist in Karl Jenkinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Pie Jesu from his â&#x20AC;&#x153;Requiem.â&#x20AC;?

The program opens with Henryk Mikolaj Goreckiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Totus Tuus which was composed for the High Mass held by Pope John Paul II in Victory Square, Warsaw, on 14 June 1987. Pater Noster (Our Father) by the Philippine composer John August Pamintuan is next on the program. This piece was the winner of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing competition held in Arezzo, Italy in August 2007. Interestingly enough, it was composed while he was visiting Colorado that same year.

The Welsh composer, Karl Jenkins, is known primarily as a composer of film music. However, he was moved to compose a Requiem and the Pie Jesu is probably one of the most familiar pieces from that work. Those who know the Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Requiem will find the similarities very interesting.

Our next composer is Morten Lauridsen. The Chamber Singers have sung two of his more famous pieces, O Magnum Mysterium and the piece you will hear on this concert, Sure On This Shining Night.

It is always a surprise when in the midst of a program of complicated music, that it is the simplest of pieces that elicits the most emotional response, and so it is with our next piece, Steal Away.

Not only is it quite sparse in tonal texture, but also it is in only three parts; a far cry from the first two pieces which divides the Singers in to eight parts.

Here arranger Brian Tate manages to get right to the core of the piece, and it is one of the Singers favorites.

Featured next on the program is Scott Anderson who will sing Green Pastures

by Wilfrid Sanderson and La donna e mobile by Giuseppe Verdi. Green Pastures takes the Singersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; conductor way back in time. This was one of three pieces he sang in his scholarship audition for Southeast Missouri State University back in 1959, and the start of his career in music.

The second half has placed the Singers in a musical area a bit unfamiliar to them; jazz and rock. No, that is not a typo. The program will end with Totoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Africa. In addition to Africa, other numbers in the second half are Moon River, Make Someone Happy, When You Wish Upon a Star, and Anna Baker singing Let it Go from the Disney movie â&#x20AC;&#x153;Frozen.â&#x20AC;? This program promises to be a lot of fun for all.

That was the oversees name given to a movie of recent years. Locally dubbed â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the story of a low self-esteemed, estranged from wife and son, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;down-and-outâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, man who witnesses a plane crash. He runs to the plane, losing his shoe on the way, and rescues several occupants of the plane, including a TV reporter. During the rescue he picks up her credit card and an award she had just received. He vanishes from the scene quickly and shares with a man he meets about what happened. When a large cash reward is offered to the unknown â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, his new â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; claims it, receiving the money and opportunities to talk about what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like to be a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. As time goes on, his conscience convicts him and he decides to jump from the ledge of a tall building. Bernie, the true hero, crawls out to talk him into staying alive, â&#x20AC;&#x153;because the world needs heroesâ&#x20AC;?. Bernie falls off the ledge and is pulled to safety by the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. In the process his face becomes dirty and the TV reporter recognizers the sooty-faced man who rescued her. She quizzes him about it, he responds: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lady, do I look like a hero to you?â&#x20AC;? But as she leaves the room she says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thank you for saving my life!â&#x20AC;? Bernie says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re welcome.â&#x20AC;? The movie ends with Bernie and his son, Joey, at the zoo, when a woman screams: â&#x20AC;&#x153;My baby fell into the lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cage.â&#x20AC;? Bernie looks at his son, shakes his head and says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;For Peteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake! Watch my shoes!â&#x20AC;? as he heads for the lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cage. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Accidental heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, I think not.

I tell that story because it introduces us to so many â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in our world today. The story of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bernieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is seen in the story of Darin Barton at the I-70 conflagration of two weeks ago. He was a homeless man who sits at that location day-after-day, displaying a sign that says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Have a blessed day!â&#x20AC;? while requesting â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;helpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. When the horrific accident happened he ran from car-to-car pulling people to safety. Later, while being interviewed, he, like Bernie, downplayed the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; designation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I only did what anyone would doâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Later, it was discovered that, like Bernie, he had beenâ&#x20AC;Śand would beâ&#x20AC;Śa â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on other occasions, helping to save a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life or assisting with a disabled car.

A third story surfaced of a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the synagogue shooting in Poway, California. Her name was Lori Gilbert-Kaye and she shielded the Rabbi as he (another hero) ushered the children to safety, taking the bullet that spared his life, even as it took hers. She reminds us of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that are seen at every mass-shooting scene, many at the cost of their lives. In a church shooting in Canada I referred to recently, a manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leg was shattered by a bullet as he took the shooter down, saving other lives.

These are just a few of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that bless our lives. One TV station honors â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Everyday Heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, with a plaque for ongoing service to our society, touching, even saving, lives. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m regularly in contact with people who are / were spouses / caregivers of people who have Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and other such debilitating diseases, and I view each one of them as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as I watch how patiently and kindly they carry their partnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;loadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

In our community, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m thankful for the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Search and Rescueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; people and all â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;First Respondersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that protect our community day-after-day. I view our Mayor and Mayor Pro-tem as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, not just for what they are enduring right now, but for the many years of voluntary and sacrificial service they have rendered for the good of our children, our community, our visitors. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m thankful to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Moms and Dads who raise â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; children.

What about you / me? To whom are we seen as a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;? Jesus said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The greatest among you (My â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;) are those who serve others.â&#x20AC;? May we be such.

Estes Valley Community Center To Temporarily Close May 20 to 24

It is hard to believe it has been more than a year since the Estes Valley Community Center (EVCC) opened its doors. But just like great things come to those who wait—like waiting more than six decades for an award-winning recreation center in Estes Park—waiting one week for EVCC staff to perform annual maintenance, deep cleaning and facility upgrades will help ensure the building remains in good working order for a long time.

The Estes Valley Community Center will be closed to the public from Monday, May 20 to Friday May 24 so the staff can complete a variety of activities that are too difficult due to safety or health reasons with the facility open to the public. The facility will reopen at 8 a. m. on Saturday, May 25.

This time of year was selected based on the availability of vendors, a slowdown in scheduled indoor activities, and when there are typically fewer people in the facility. During this closure there will be

no Cubz Den, open swim, open gym, senior services activities, or access to the golf simulator.

“A deep cleaning of the recreation center is a necessary evil in the management of a seven-day-a-week operation, ” said Ivana Knudson, Guest Services Manager. “We have rearranged all schedules so that we can complete the necessary work during this time frame with as minimal impact on patrons as possible. ” The scheduled work includes: • Cleaning and finishing the floors of the upper and lower fitness rooms • Draining lap pool for deep cleaning • Restriping the parking lot • Carpet cleaning throughout the building • Cleaning and finishing the gym floor For more information about the Estes Valley Community Center, call Ivana Knudson at 970-586-8191 or email her at ivanak@evrpd.com.

Meet Future K9 Handler, Police Officer Mikel Otazua

Community Support Needed For EPPD’s First Ever K9 Program By: Police Chief Wes Kufeld

Estes Park Police Officer Mikel Otazua has been selected to be the very first K9 handler for the Estes Park Police Department. He has been employed with the Estes Park Police Department since May of 2016.

Mikel Otazua was born in Caracas, Venezuela. At the age of six, he moved to Dallas, Texas with his family. Mikel's passion for dogs began around this time when his family rescued their first dog, a German Shepard named Dollar. Mikel was often found playing with Dollar and teaching him simple tricks at home.

Mikel and his family then moved to Miami, Florida in June of 2006. After graduating high school, Mikel attended Miami-Dade Community College. He transferred to Florida International University where he studied Criminal Justice.

Mikel has a passion for dogs. While in Miami, Mikel's family adopted a French Mastiff named Hooch who was named after the dog in the 1989 movie, "Turner and Hooch." After moving out of the family home, Mikel fostered two Ameri-

can Pitbull Terriers from high-kill shelters. He fostered them until they found their forever homes. Mikel also fostered a sickly black lab puppy that he received from a friend who was not able to care for her. He nursed the puppy back to health and the puppy was adopted by a retired Miami-Dade Police K9 handler.

In January of 2015, Mikel moved to Denver, Colorado where he continued his education at the University of Colorado - Denver. Mikel then attended and completed a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy in Aurora, Colorado. He was hired by the Estes Park Police Department where he plans to work until his retirement.

Mikel's life-long career goal has been to become a K9 Handler in a small town. He feels very fortunate to have been hired on by an excellent agency in such a supportive community.

On behalf of the Estes Park Police Department, I am excited to announce we are at the initial stages of implementing a new police K9 program -- the first ever in the history of Estes Park Police Department. A K9 is a highly specialized dog with intensive police training, which enhances our efforts to keep residents and visitors safe.

As we roll out this new program in support of public safety, we’re asking for community assistance to fund the program.

Read on to learn more, and we hope you’ll join the force behind our K9 initiative.

The staff of the Police Department are faced with new societal pressures every day, so we must stay proactive and remain ahead of the criminal element to protect our community. A K9 is an incredible asset to enhance the capabilities of our patrol officers. In fact, K9 enhanced skills can alert officers to potential hazards, which could save an officer’s life someday. K9s are multi-tasking units within a police force, consisting of the dog and its handler. Their tasks include locating fleeing criminals, missing persons, illegal and hidden drugs, miscellaneous evidence, weapons and stolen property. The unit may be called to search for people, explosives, drugs, or all three at once. Special event patrols are a valuable K9 duty, since large gatherings present heightened safety concerns.

Today’s K9s know the difference between work and play. When not working on a specific task, they are approachable, friendly and affectionate. This flexibility will allow us to offer more opportunities for community engagement and education. Most people can relate to having a dog as a partner, friend and family member – so people of all ages will find K9 demonstrations fun and interesting.

These demonstrations can be requested by the public and will help us to foster goodwill and community partnerships.

Estes Park’s K9 unit will be crosstrained so they can provide maximum benefit to the community. The K9 handler receives hundreds of hours of initial training before they, along with the trained K9, can be certified and placed in service to perform their daily duties.

Additionally, K9s participate in ongoing education and training on an almost weekly basis to remain current and maintain their certifications. K9 units spend their days on patrol, assisting in calls for service and traffic contacts. A K9 and handler become partners to protect each other in hazardous situations.

Our assigned Officer, Mikel Otazua, began his K9 handler training in April.

Shortly thereafter we expect to recruit

the specific K9 to join our program. The costs to develop this program are considerable, although the return on investment to the community includes many long-term benefits for our community’s safety. To help the Estes Park Police Department cover the costs, we’ve established a fundraising campaign that will help us launch the program, estimated to cost roughly $80,000, and continue operations in the future. Tax-deductible donations will help us fund everything from dog food and toys, to veterinary care, to the dog’s vest and badge, to K9 unit training, to the custom-built kennel the dog will live in at his handler’s home.

In addition to accepting general donations, the fully outfitted K9 unit vehicle is available for sponsorship by an individual or organization.

Charitable contributions to governmental units are tax deductible under section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code if made for a public purpose.

Contributions in support of the K9 program are tax deductible. Donations may also be made by check to the Town of Estes Park (K9 program) and mailed to P.O. Box 1287 in Estes Park, CO 80517.

Enjoy Exciting Activities At Annual Safety Fair This Saturday

K9 unit demonstrations featured Kids and adults are invited to the annual Estes Park Public Safety Fair this Saturday, May 11, sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department. This fun, family event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Estes Park Events Complex, at 1125 Rooftop Way. Estes Park Police Officers will be serving free hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks and beverages donated by local businesses, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For the 2019 Safety Fair, more than 20 regional public safety agencies will converge on Estes Park, bringing equipment and apparatus ranging from a bomb robot to medical evacuation helicopters, dive rescue apparatus and more.

currently signed up to participate include the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Rocky Mountain National Park and Larimer County Sheriff.

The event will also highlight police K9 units this year. As the Estes Park Police Department fundraises to add a K9 unit, it has invited the Larimer County Sheriff 's Office and Loveland Police Department K9 units to provide demonstrations. Demonstrations take place at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. to show off the skills and benefits a K9 unit can bring to the community.

Local businesses have generously donated door prizes, including movie tickets, bowling games, and more. Children can register to win one of four bikes to be given away at 1 p.m.

Police Chief Wes Kufeld stated "The Safety Fair has been a collaborative effort over the years to provide education to our citizens about the many services available in the Estes Valley. We are thankful to all of the volunteers, contributors and partnering agencies who make this event happen." Loveland Police Dogs Visit Estes Park Last week, Loveland Police Department officers, as well as K9 officers, came to the Estes Park High School to give demonstrations to the students about how a police dog works.

The demo provided an opportunity for the kids to see these amazing dogs in action, sniffing out narcotics and apprehending a fleeing person. EPPD Officer Mikel Otazua set up this special presentation as the EPPD is currently partnering with Loveland to cotrain together. Officer Otazua has been chosen to be the EPPD K9 handler and is very committed to this task. He has regularly trained with Loveland PD to get experience and prep for his opportunity to be the first EPPD officer with a K9 partner.

EPPD is planning to purchase a Belgian Malinois. They will send a team to purchase the dog, consisting of Officer Otazua, a Supervising Officer from Estes Park, a Loveland Police Sergeant and a veterinarian. They will carefully evaluate and select the Photos by Capt. Eric Rose K9 based on agility, stamina, endurance, temperament, courage, intelligence, handler loyalty, desire to work, blood- training for 12 (40) hour weeks. Loveland is recognized as a lead training line history and health. Estes Park Explorer Post 911 At Saturday’s Safety Fair

The Safety Fair is a fun, family event and an opportunity to meet members of Explorer Post 911 as they work alongside first responders from Estes Park Police Department, Fire Department and EMS crews. The Explorers are all students at Estes Park High School. At the Safety Fair they will be checking visitors’ blood pressure, demonstrating use of tourniquets, and distributing smoke alarms.

Explorer Post 911 is the first in the country to give high school students the opportunity to learn from first responders and observe at close quarters police, fire and EMS at work.

On Monday Explorer Post 911 celebrated the end of a successful year, meeting over pizza with their sponsors from Estes Park Police Department, Estes Valley Fire Prevention District, and Estes

Park Medical Center EMS Ambulance Services. Many of the Explorers are considering careers as first responders. For Explorer Scout Spencer Holmes, the classroom instruction and ride-along experience provided unexpected realworld opportunity to apply his skills when he came upon a head-on collision in the canyon last fall. Holmes pulled two people from one of the cars and performed CPR on one of them, saving her life. For his actions that day, Holmes recently received the Meritorious Action Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

Duck Race Raises Over $128,000!

Every duck paddles for a participating organization. Those are a few of the tenets of the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival that guided nearly 7,000 rubber ducks on their way to the finish line on Saturday, May 4. Could you hear them quacking their approval of the great weather, huge crowds of spectators and great prizes?

“It was a perfect day in our beautiful mountain town to have a Rotary Duck Race Festival and to see the happiness on everyone’s faces while they joined in the fun, ” said ‘Big Duck’ Kathy Groesbeck Sunday in between trips to return tents, large inflatable ducks and other supplies to storage so she could reclaim her garage. “We are so fortunate to live in such a caring, giving community that realizes how important it is to keep the annual tradition of this extraordinary event going into the future. ” Here are the 2019 statistics: • Number of duck adoptions: 6,773 • Amount to be distributed to 67 Participating Organizations: approximately $128,700 ($19 of every $20 Duck Adoption) • Time from start to finish line for Duck #1: 1 hour, 41 minutes • Prizes donated by merchants: 278 • Top prize winners: * Christina Ciancio-Schor $5,000 Grand Prize * Jacquelyn Hertel - Pine Lodge at Glacier National Park plus $1,000 for travel * Mike Gay - Old Faithful Cabin at Yellowstone National Park plus $1,000 for travel * Joanie Crockett - Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite National Park plus $1,000 for travel Christina Ciancio-Schor, winner of the Grand Prize, hails from Castle Rock. “Security had a great turnout of volunteers, ” Oja noted. “60 folks signed up and as always when the weather is good, there are folks helping along the way. Thank you to everyone whom nudged volunteers my way. ” Now, the little yellow rubber ducks are drying out in their secret location, resting up for their next adventure, the 2020 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival.

Peggy Mauerman Joins The Old Gallery In Allenspark The Board of Directors at The Old Gallery in Allenspark is pleased to announce the hiring of Peggy Mauerman as the Events and Operations Manager.

Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, Mauerman has lived in Colorado since 1995. She worked as a Global Contracts Manager for Hewlett-Packard and also had the opportunity to live and work in Barcelona, Spain and Scotland.

She has a degree in Economics from the University of San Diego. Peggy and her husband Barry have been fulltime residents of Estes Park since 2001 and Peggy Mauerman have raised their three children here.

She has worked in the writing industry for eleven years using her BLA degree in general studies, with an emphasis in Biology and English. Her passions are scuba diving, hiking, animals, and conservation of nature.

Kip Rusk (begins May 19) In 1977, I walked the Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico; a trek that lasted nearly 9 months. My good friend, Craig Dunn, hiked with me as far as the Red Desert in southern Wyoming where his right knee ended the trip for him.

This was before cell phones and GPS. We used paper maps and communicated with the people who were following us via mailbox and pay phone whenever we

came into a town to resupply. It should be noted that I’m attempting to recount this story some 40 years after the fact, without the benefit of an exacting memory. Because of that deficit the details of my story are filled-in using imaginative memory, meaning, the stories may be fictional in many of the details (I’ve imagined what those details must have been) but are all based on true events.

Ralph G. Hollenbeck Ralph G. Hollenbeck, 81, of Estes Park, CO, formerly of Lowry, Minnesota passed away peacefully with his family and friends at his side, sharing their true love through prayers, stories, laughter and tears.

Born in Morris, Minnesota in 1938 Ralph, known as “Buzz” to his family, lived an adventurous and energetic life. After graduating from high school, he joined the Marine Corps earing the rank of First Sergeant. He served a combat tour in Vietnam in Military Intelligence.

His passion for horses could be seen in his lifetime of horse ownership, riding and training horses. He also had a passion for dogs, loved to hunt, go to garage sales, read books on a vast array of subjects, watch movies, and crafts of all kinds. He loved anything adventurous.

His greatest joy was loving his family.

His stories will live on in his family members.

His survivors include his siblings,

Katherine, Patricia, Robert and Paula, his son Guy Hollenbeck, daughter COL (Ret.) Donna Rojas (Darren), grandchildren Leigh Hollenbeck, Kyle Hollenbeck, Shanie Hollenbeck, Dylan Rojas, Logan Rojas, Brianna Rojas and great granddaughter Isabelle Hollenbeck along with his wife’s child Lisa Paradise (Mike) and children Alex and Eliana. He was predeceased by his infant daughter Connie and parents Evelyn and Paul Hollenbeck.

Ralph “Buzz” will be profoundly missed by those who knew him but he will live through so many memories of his funny stories and unique experiences that he shaped for those who knew and loved him.

We will love you forever Dad, Grandpa Ralph, Buzz, Uncle Buzz and Dear Friend.

Roger Merle Thorp

Known for his philosophy of gentle architecture, Roger Merle Thorp died peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, April 28, 2019 in the home he designed and built.

He leaves a legacy of designs not only in Estes Park, but throughout Colorado, 15 other states, and two Canadian provinces. Roger was an awardwinning architect for 47 years having selected Estes Park to set up his practice in 1976, just months before the Big Thompson Canyon Flood.

He was a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and a LEED Accredited

Professional. He was respected by his peers who selected him as the 2010 AIA Colorado North Chapter “Architect of the Year.”

While all of his projects and over 40 awards were important to him, he was especially proud when local projects were honored. Examples of these include private residences, RMNP Fall River Visitor Center, Estes Park Conference Center, Community Church of the Rockies Outdoor Chapel, Performance Park Pavilion, and the sandstone Estes Park “Gateway” sign that greets visitors on US Hwy 36.

A smile always came to his face seeing the many visitors taking photos of his unique design with the majestic mountaintops as its backdrop.

While proud of and committed to his profession and clients, Roger was even more rewarded by and devoted to his family and church.

He was born in Clay Center, KS on October 9, 1946 and with two brothers was raised on a farm in the Alida community along the Republican River in Geary County, KS. It was there he learned to work hard and find satisfaction in that work. He learned life skills through participation in youth fellowship, 4-H, music, and athletics.

He met his lifelong partner and wife Verlene (Holdsworth) as a freshman at Dickinson County Community High School (DCCHS), Chapman, KS and

married her on December 22, 1966 in Buckeye, KS. Roger attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS where he played varsity football and sang in the Concert Choir and Messiah Festival.

He then transferred to Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS to study architectural design.

While there he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Scholarship for Independent Study, was a member of the Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in Architecture and sang with the Varsity Men’s Glee Club and Concert Choir. Upon graduating with honors, earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a minor in Art in 1970, he was hired as project architect with Keith Ames Architect in Longmont, CO. In 1972 he and Verlene built their home overlooking Crescent Lake in Pinewood Springs and raised their two sons there. As a family they enjoyed hiking, skiing, sledding, and many family trips together. His hobbies were reading, music, pencil drawing and watercolors.

He loved the character of dry laid stone and built with it as often as he could. He had a passion for the historic stone courthouses of Kansas which he traveled the state to document. He would also drive out of his way to photograph Carnegie libraries. AIA Colorado regularly invited him to show his artwork at its annual Art for Architects exhibition and he served as Jurist for the AIA Young Architect Awards. His artwork is exhibited in the Prairie PastTimes Gallery in Cottonwood Falls, KS. He loved running and was a multiyear medalist in both the Rocky Mountain Senior Games and State of Colorado Games.

Music was a significant part of his entire life, both for enjoyment and participation. He was known for his tenor voice which he shared generously. He always accepted when asked to perform in local benefits like Estes Park Sings, It’s Showtime, Salute to America, Veterans Monument and Crossroads Ministry. He was a soloist with the Estes Park Oratorio Society, sang in the Men’s Chorus, church choirs, and most recently, The Uncommon Connection vocal quartet.

Roger donated countless hours to improving the Estes Park community whether for the Arts, his church, Crossroads Ministry, Boy Scout Troop 8, Rotary or championing the need for childcare. He was a ruling elder in the

Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies where he served on many committees and as Middle School youth leader. He also designed the church’s Columbarium, Outdoor Chapel, and Shelter.

As a member of The Rotary Club of Estes Park, he served as chair of the Scholarship and Community Service Committees and is a Paul Harris Fellow. The family participated in the Rotary Foreign Exchange Program and hosted several Rotary Foreign Exchange Students. For exhibiting Service Above Self, he was awarded Rotarian of the Year for 2018.

He was a charter member of the Estes Park Habitat for Humanity Board and served on the Estes Valley Development Code and the Stanley Historical District advisory boards. He was a supporter of the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies and the Cultural Center of Estes Park, and currently was serving as a director of the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation. In recognition of his accomplishments and civic involvement, he was named the 2013 DCCHS Meritorious Graduate.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Rebecca Thorp, two infant siblings and older brother Loren.

He is survived by wife Verlene, sons Erinn (Nicole) Thorp of Atlanta, GA, and Christopher (Rebecca) of Loveland, CO, grandchildren Adison and Aidian Thorp of Loveland, CO and Camille and Owen Thorp of Atlanta, GA, brother Robert (Deborah) Thorp of Deadwood, SD, brothers-in-law Eugene (Gloria) Holdsworth of Lindsborg, KS and Dean (Janice) Holdsworth of Abilene, KS, aunts Iva Lewis of Greeley, CO and Zelma Funston of Lawrence, KS. He was admired for his creativity, gentle and kind spirit, integrity and humility. In memory and honor of Roger, donations may be made to the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies Foundation, The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation, or the Bobby Rifkin Endowed Chair in Prostate Cancer Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Center, all in care of Allnutt Funeral Service at 1302 Graves Avenue, Estes Park, CO 80517.

Linda Jean McKee Linda Jean McKee was born on December 15, l947 to Robert Ross and Phyllis Ray McKee of Kentland, Indiana.

She grew up on a farm three miles east of Kentland with two brothers, Robert II and Dennis Kim. Life was good on the farm. Linda attended Elementary School and High School in Kentland with a four year hiatus at Middle School in Goodland, Indiana. Upon graduation from A. J. Kent High School, Linda enrolled at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana and received a degree in Elementary Education.

It was at Hanover that she made many lifelong friends who continued to be part of her life. Linda married Robert Hunt, Jr. the summer after graduation in 1970 and moved to New York City where she worked as a copy typist for CONCERN MAGAZINE. The couple moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in l973 where they raised a family of two daughters, Kristin and Suzanne.

Linda was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in school at which time she began working at Westminster Presbyterian Church as a Senior High Youth Director. She enjoyed working with high school students so after four years, resigned that position, to return to school at the University of Nebraska to complete a degree in secondary education in History and Social Studies.

Upon completion of that degree, Linda went to work for Lincoln Public Schools as a substitute teacher. In l991, she received a full time position as a social studies teacher at Irving School.

Linda spent 16 wonderful years teaching at Irving with excellent leadership and colleagues. Her second marriage to Roger Fankhauser began in l999.

While living in Nebraska, Linda’s travel adventures included rafting to the Arctic Circle with her daughter

and cycling through several U.S. states, Canada and Europe with her husband, Roger.

Linda retired in 2007, sold her home in Lincoln and headed with her husband, Roger, to the mountains of Colorado. They settled in Estes Park where they made many new friends and enjoyed an active lifestyle of hiking, skiing, motorcycling and traveling.

Linda backpacked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon three times, climbed Longs Peak, two other 14ers, and completed several Continental Divide hikes.

In addition to these adventures, Linda’s other passion was reading; she was a member of two book clubs.

She also took a great deal of responsibility for her elderly mother, the family farm, and grandchildren. She volunteered for several years as a docent at MacGregor Ranch, volunteered at the American Legion as an Auxiliary member and was an active member of Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Pride in her Scottish heritage was expressed through bagpiping and membership in a bagpipe band, regular participation in the annual Scottish Festival, hosting Scottish events, and bargain shopping at thrift stores.

Linda is survived by her husband, Roger Fankhauser, her two daughters, Kristin (Jim) Karner and Suzanne (Bart) Frazier and two grandchildren, Adelaide Karner and Grace Frazier. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert and Dennis Kim McKee and their families, her mother, Phyllis McKee, and stepdaughter, Lisa Fankhauser and her children Susannah and Isaac.
