We’ve all heard, “You may not have ever seen a mountain lion, but if you hike in the Colorado mountains, they’ve likely seen you!”

This seems even more evident lately with many lion sightings in Estes Park captured on wildlife cams, at the EP Health emergency room entrance, and groups of cats around Prospect Mountain and throughout the Estes Valley. Local professional photographer, Paul J. Marcotte, quips “Now, I can scratch a mountain lion off of my photography bucket list!” When not hard at work delivering for FedEx, Paul captures spectacular photos and video of wildlife and scenery in our area.

Recently, near Boulder, he safely captured these amazing images of this apex predator, high up in a tree.

Rocky Mountain National Park Will Begin A Phased Reopening On May 27 In accordance with guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local public health authorities, Rocky Mountain National Park plans to increase recreational access and services on May 27. Rocky Mountain National Park continues to work with the State of Colorado to follow the “Safer at Home” guidance as well as with county and local officials as these changes are implemented. Rocky Mountain National Park is located in Larimer, Grand and Boulder counties.

The current Safer at Home guidance for the State of Colorado encourages Colorado residents to “limit activities to your immediate community, not travel more than 10 miles from your home to recreate or vacation and not travel to mountain areas. ” The Colorado Tourism Office is currently discouraging vacations to Colorado to limit community spread of Covid19. The Executive Order from the State of Colorado is set to expire on May 26 and can be amended or extended at any time.

The health and safety of park visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount. Rocky Mountain National Park staff continue to examine each facility function and service provided to ensure those operations comply with current public health guidance and will be regularly monitored.

Park staff continue to conduct a decision and planning process to coordinate a phased reopening of Rocky Mountain National Park on Wednesday, May 27.

Park operations and services will be much different this year.

Campgrounds: Portions of Moraine Park and Glacier Basin Campgrounds will open on June 4.

Estes Valley Safe And Strong Recovery - Will You Join Us? Following is a message from the Accelerated Recovery Team partners including the Town of Estes Park, Estes Chamber of Commerce, Estes Park Economic Development Corp., Visit Estes Park, Estes Area Lodging Association, Rocky Mountain National Park, YMCA of the Rockies and the Estes Park Police Department.

In October 1859, Joel Estes and one or more of his four sons traveled west into the mountains up a route that generally followed the St. Vrain River. Navigating around the narrow, steep portions of the canyon, they then crossed over into the Little Thompson River drainage and followed the gentle slope of Muggins Gulch. At the head of the gulch, they climbed over a gentle rise and looked down into a valley or park, and realized it was some new and unexplored valley.

(Colorado History Columnist Kenneth Jessen in the Loveland Reporter-Herald) For over 100 years the Town of Estes Park has been a destination for those looking to explore life in the mountains and experience the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. Many of the people who call Estes Park home today discovered the beauty of this valley while on their own vacations.

Tourism is the bedrock of Estes Park.

In fact, we are the only community in Colorado whose main industry has always been tourism. All the people who travel here to escape the city, return to nature and experience a slower pace of life share in the reason why we have made this our home. The people who stay in our lodges, eat in our restaurants and shop in our stores are the ones we have to thank for our thriving economy Without that economic foundation provided by our Town's robust tourism, many of the services and amenities we as a community enjoy would cease to exist.

Estes Park was new and unexplored territory when Joel Estes built his home here, and here we are in unexplored territory again. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought our local economy to a screeching halt and many of our valued employers and employees to their collective knees. However, propelled by the rugged persistence that characterizes our chosen mountain lifestyle, together we will chart a new path towards community and economic vitality once again.

To help the whole community recover from the shock and economic impact of this unprecedented pandemic, several organizations banded together in late March to create an Accelerated Recovery Team -- the Town of Estes Park, Estes Chamber of Commerce, Estes Park Economic Development Corp., Visit Estes Park, Estes Area Lodging Association, Rocky Mountain National Park, YMCA of the Rockies, and the Estes Park Police Department. Together we've been working to create the Estes Valley Safe and Strong Recovery Plan (https://tinyurl.com/ybz2875d) that provides a safe rolling open for our businesses and local economy so that we can

welcome back our visitors, while also protecting the people who make Estes Park so great: our residents, employers and employees.

The Estes Valley Safe and Strong Recovery Plan reflects guidance from Governor Polis, Larimer County Health and the Town of Estes Park, in addition to feedback from business owners through focus groups, surveys and primary research conducted by the Accelerated Recovery Team members. The purpose of this joint plan is to unite our business community to operate from the same playbook in protecting the health and safety of our town as we enter the stages of opening business again as directed by the Larimer County Safer at Home schedule (https://tinyurl.com/ya7rpxo3). The more we practice the same health and safety standards, the faster our economy will recover. The Chamber has created a wholesale co-op for purchasing of hand sanitizer and masks and has also partnered with the EDC to administer Business Relief Grants to business owners thanks to the Town of Estes Park's Community Relief Fund.

While reopening our community our visitors will be an essential part of our recovery, County and State officials intend for travel to be restricted to essential business and within county limits.

The solution for our local economy today lies with our residents. While we have over 1,000 displaced workers right now, those who have the means to shop can make a difference. We can make a point to get take out from one of our restaurants, shop for a birthday or celebration downtown, buy a gift card to get that much-needed haircut, plan a "staycation" at one of our local lodges/cabins and/or redirect our philanthropic generosity right into our own backyard by supporting one of our local nonprofits.

The spirit of the Estes Valley is a force to be reckoned with. If we all do our part to support the healing of our community and our economy with one voice, and wear our masks in solidarity (and with a little panache!), we will beat the spread of this virus and our masks will serve as a relic that signifies what this town can accomplish when we work together. The greatest asset we have is YOU, in addition to the visitors who support our tax base. It is going to take all of us to heal, but together we can make Estes Park strong again. Will you join us?

Larimer County Now Has Readily Available COVID-19 Testing Larimer County Public Health, in partnership with local hospitals, has increased COVID-19 testing capacity in the community.

Testing supplies have become more readily available and local providers have been able to provide testing options for their patients. Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 should call their provider to discuss symptoms and determine whether a COVID-19 test needs to be ordered. Many providers locally can now order tests for their patients.

Banner Health, UCHealth, and Larimer County Public Health testing sites will not accept walk-ins. Everyone must be screened in advance and scheduled for an appointment.

Larimer County Public Health provides drive thru testing on Tuesdays and Fridays. People who are experiencing symptoms and asymptomatic people who are a close contact to a person who has tested positive to COVID-19 are eligible for testing. People registering for testing must be at least 18 years

of age. Pre-registration can be done at larimer.org/community-testing.

You can help slow the spread of viruses by: • increasing distance between people to six feet to help reduce spread, • washing hands frequently with soap and water, • covering coughs and sneezes, • wearing a face covering in public • staying home when sick, and • avoiding close contact with anyone who has cold or flu-like symptoms.

Information about COVID-19 is constantly changing, and the public health response adjusts as more is learned about this virus. While there is plenty of news and media information available, LCDHE is encouraging Larimer County residents to view the latest credible information on COVID-19 at www.larimer.org/coronavirus or www.CDC.gov/coronavirus.

As a step to help the community begin to safely reopen, the Town has enacted an emergency ordinance requiring the use of face coverings by everyone in public areas of any business within Estes Park town limits -- including employees, vendors and customers. The ordinance is in effect through June 10.

Businesses are responsible for ensuring these requirements. To support businesses in educating their customers, the Town of Estes Park offers printable flyers/signage at www.estes.org/covid-19, and printed copies in the western vestibule entrance to Town Hall/Police Department, 170 MacGregor Ave. Materials are available in English and Spanish. Estes Park Police officers will be present downtown to assist with public education and enforcement.

The Town's ordinance also requires the use of facial coverings when outdoors in the Commercial Downtown

Annual Striping Project Begins May 18 From approximately May 18 through May 22, weather permitting (dates may be extended due to weather), the Town of Estes Park and its contractor will be repainting center lines, edge lines, crosswalks, and thermoplastic symbols on Town-owned roadways. Moving lane

closures will be necessary during painting. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the areas where crews are working. Signs will be posted to identify areas of wet paint.

EVFPD Awarded Ready, Set, Go Grant

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) is one of ten agencies nationwide awarded a grant from the Ready, Set, Go! Program managed by the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The RSG! Program grant provides subject matter experts to assist in the design and delivery of community-tailored wildfire education.

Wildfire is a year-round reality that is setting records for the size, destruction, costs, and loss of lives and property. Utilizing the RSG! Program, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) seeks to make a difference in our community faced with the wildfire threat. The RSG! Program works in a complimentary and collaborative fashion with FirewiseUSA® and other existing wildfire education efforts. The intent of this education is to encourage residents to be actively involved in mitigating the wildfire threat to their properties and being prepared for evacuation during a wildfire event. The more residents get involved, the greater a community’s resiliency to wildfire.

According to the International Association of Fire Chiefs, “the RSG! Program did this when they played an important role for Falls Creek Ranch HOA during the 416 Fire [near Durango, CO]. On June 9, 2018, the 416 Fire evacuated the community. At the meeting point, resi-

dents were concerned and worried, but calm and patient. Many said the practice evacuation, videos, RSG! go-bags, RSG! National Action Guides, and practice evacuation made them much more comfortable leaving their homes.” The 416 & Burro Fire complex burned 55,000 acres in the southwestern portion of Colorado.

Over the last ten years, the EVFPD has responded to approximately 113 calls for service for wildfires. In 2012, the Woodland Heights Fire destroyed 22 Estes Park homes, two outbuildings and burned 27 acres. With the wind driving the fire towards more densely populated areas, six aircraft where diverted from the High Park Fire in northern Larimer County to assist in the containment. Fire District Staff are concerned that a similar or larger fire is likely to occur within the District under the same conditions at some point in time. EVFPD Lt./Fire Inspector Nate Mutzl states, “Now is the time to prepare yourself, your family and your home for wildfire. Through evacuation readiness and mitigation work, hopefully we can reduce the impact of wildfire in our community.”

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of April 26, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 5 calls for service.

On May 10, 2020, at 10:39 a.m., police stopped a vehicle in the 400 block of W. Elkhorn Ave. On scene they contacted a 36 year old male from Estes Park who

He was charged with DUI, driving while driver’s license revoked, possession of an open container of alcohol, and no front license plate.

Board Election Results For Park Hospital District The Park Hospital District will welcome Diane Muno, William (Bill) Pinkham and Stephen Alper for a threeyear term starting May 18, 2020. The new Board members will be sworn in at the May 18 Board Meeting.

Sarah Shepherd was the District Designated Election Official and she said the response for this election was “a very strong outcome.” The Park Hospital District chose to conduct the election using a mail-in ballot – 9,735 voters received a ballot. The polling was open until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 -2,105 voters responded. The results were tabulated, and an email was sent to the all Board candidates, current Board members, Vern Carda, CEO, and Randy Brigham, CHRO. David Batey, EPH Board of Directors Chairman shared, "It has been a privilege and

pleasure to work with Board Treasurer Monty Miller over the last three years. I would like to thank Monty for the many significant contributions he has made to the Board, the Estes Park Health organization and our community over that time."

He added, "Board Member-Elect Steve Alper will bring impressive experience in health care to the Board, and I look forward to working with him."

May is Wildfire Awareness Month Safer at Home Allows Time for Wildfire Season Preparation We find ourselves at an interesting time. We are in a safer at home order and it is starting to feel spring-like. This is a great opportunity to help cure your cabin fever and to get outside Living in Estes Valley we choose a particular lifestyle here that has an abundance of beauty, history, active lifestyle, a sense of community and some risks that others do not have. There is the possibility of having some huge snowstorms (it has happened in May) still with each day that passes gives us less chance of that happening. We have already had red flag warnings this year.

Therefore, we need to be aware of the risks of wildfires.

We are residents living in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), an area where residential homes and commercial development are intermixed with forested areas. We have a unique situation, we do not just have a forested area but we have a National Park, with large acreage, as our neighbor. It would be good for each of us to look now at what we can do to minimize the risks.

It does not take much for our forests to dry out. Due to Colorado’s arid climate and fire-dependent forests, many homeowners and landowners may be particularly vulnerable to wildfires.

These losses can be minimized if home-

owners take the time to become aware of safety measures to help protect their homes and complete some effective actions. There are a couple aspects to look at. You will want to prepare your household, property and family.

Now is a good time to get started on this.

May is Wildfire Awareness Month. We have the added risk of Covid 19 virus this year which Fire Departments and Districts around the state fear the worst due to social distancing and the health of wildland firefighters. We need to protect our properties, and improve the safety of first responders. Another major concern would be sheltering folks in the event of a major wildfire, what would that look like and how could it that be accomplished?

It is time for residents living in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) to prepare their homes and communities for wildfire in the weeks ahead.

There are several easy steps homeowners can take to help protect their property, to reduce home ignition risk, and inhibit the spread of wildland fires.

Create a defensible space that is defined as at least a 30-foot buffer zone of reduced vegetation around a home to mitigate the effects of an advancing fire.

You do this by• Clearing pine needles, leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves, porches and decks.

• Screening or boxing-in areas below

decks and porches with wire screening no larger than 1/8-inch mesh to keep flammable debris from accumulating.

• Not storing flammable items like wooden patio furniture under decks.

• Keeping grass and weeds cut low.

• Trimming dry grass and shrubs – if it is brown-cut it down.

• Removing all fuel within 5 ft. of your home’s foundation, deck, overhangs and out buildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, do not let it touch your house, deck or porch.

• Removing dead vegetation in the 100 ft. surrounding your home (or to your property line).

• Pruning trees so the lowest branches

are 6 to 10 ft. high to reduce ladder fuels. Do not let wildfire spread to treetops.

• Move woodpiles at least 30 ft. away from your home during non-winter months.

• Do not let debris and slash linger.

Dispose of these items quickly to reduce fuel for fire.

• Landscape with native and less-flammable plants.

• Keep address signs visible. Therefore, fire service people know your location.

• Remember to prepare ahead of time for the possibility of having to evacuate, have a family disaster plan in place.

Mayor Koenig’s Report Dear People of Estes Park, Upon announcing my candidacy for mayor of Estes, I pledged to represent all people. To actively listen to their opinions. Explain my positions on key issues.

And to host a training session for trustees and me about the ethics.

Here’s a report out about what I’m fulfilling my pledge.

During the 21 days since becoming mayor, hundreds of you have reached out.

Sharing your thoughts with me. Describing challenges. Voicing concerns. Seeking clarifications, making suggestions, and more often than not... thanking me for listening. Your sharing helps me better represent you, and enables us move forward together. Local government is supposed to work this way.

This past Tuesday was a big day.

In the afternoon, experts from CIRSA trained the town’s trustees and me about doing your business in an open, transparent, and ethical manner. They gave special attention to policies concerning recusal circumstances, procedures for disclosure, and communications.

That evening, the trustees and I heard from two experts. First up, Public Health director Dr. Gonzales briefed us, staff and towns people about Larimer County’s efforts to treat and curtail Covid-19. Gonzales’ presence was a timely counterbalance to the information shortage that’s fueled frustration, anger. and given rise to pseudo-science theories. His shining a light on the realities of the pandemic, pointed the way forward for us and the county.

The way forward, by necessity involves caution. Now, with people fearful of getting out—lest they get sick—we must give them confidence Estes Park is a safe destination for visiting, shopping, and enjoy-

The confidence they seek and will attract them here, comes from our caution, care, calm, not conflict. It comes from us having a low incidence rate for Covid-19. And from us accepting, not defiantly protesting the wearing personal protective equipment in public. Let’s talk a deep breath, focus on the common good, then with caution and confidence move forward together.

Next, RMNP Superintendent Darla Sidles, an Estes resident, provided particulars about the phased-in opening of the park beginning May 27. An approach informed by guidance from the White House and the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as state and local public health authorities. Please join me in supporting their efforts.

On a related note, the EDC, Chamber of Commerce, and Visit Estes Park have been busily engaging various stakeholders of the town to generate ideas about moving forward. Including public transit, options for social distancing, handling overflow on sidewalks downtown, addressing residential transportation issues. The groups met on Tuesday May 12, and will report their recommendations May 26.

This is a glimpse into how I’m keeping my pledge to you. To stay abreast of how ‘m representing you please check this space weekly for my report outs. In the meantime, stay safe, remain healthy and keep howling.

We spend all day every day alone, for the most part. We don’t talk to the people in the grocery store, often because we don’t recognize them with their mask on. Or is it that shaggy hairdo? We see someone sort of familiar but we’ve never known them to wear sweats, or go without makeup, or be in public with a baseball cap pushed down over their brow.

We don’t approach them because we want to preserve their dignity but also because we don’t want to get close enough for a friendly conversation. Distance is the best medicine.

When we go on our daily walk or hike and approach another walker, we cross to the other side or step aside and glance away, sometimes without saying anything. (I say hello but I know people who think they’ll catch the virus if they so much as look at another person. I’m cautious but not that cautious.)

We wear gloves when we’re in public, wash our hands while singing Happy Birthday in our heads (admittedly, a lot faster than when this all started), and Mr. Clean with his bald head, bushy white eyebrows and gold hoop earring is our new best friend. Indeed, he’s the only non-relative we’ll allow into our house.

With all of this isolation, wouldn’t you think we’d be bubbling over with thoughts and ideas and ah-ha moments to talk about when we Zoom with friends and family? Doesn’t it seem likely we would want to aim the computer camera toward the end results of our newfound avocations, to show off what we’ve accomplished? But we don’t. What we do talk about, endlessly. without pause, ad nauseam, is COVID-19.

I’d like to explore other topics with you, but I haven’t exhausted my coronavirus confabulation yet. The longer I’m away from others however, the less able I am to assemble my thoughts in a tangible form, so here are random virology digressions: • Does anyone else do a mental check first thing upon awakening in the morning? It goes like this: Do I feel chilled, or hot, like I have a fever? Is that light pulse at my temples a headache? Do I feel fatigued even after seven hours of sleep?

Did that little cough mean something?

Do I have it?

Nope. I feel fine. Another day above ground, thank goodness. It’s time to get up.

• How ‘bout this one: I arise each morning and follow a somewhat arbitrary routine which includes any or all of these: journaling, reading the paper, working the sudoku, preparing and eating breakfast, meditating, handling email, and doing an online exercise class.

Then when I look at the clock it’s 1:00 in the afternoon. How did that happen?

Half the day is gone and I haven’t stepped outside except to get the paper.

It’s no wonder my 10:00 p.m. bedtime has become 11:30 p.m. There’s not enough time in the day to get everything done!

Yet our pace has slowed and it feels good. Will it be difficult to gear back up when the time finally comes? Having to be somewhere at a certain time, showered and dressed in street clothes, with an agenda in hand might be a challenge.

I hope I can remember how to set the alarm.

• It’s been six years since I’ve had a landline. Still, sometimes I come home, step into the house and listen for the familiar beep of the answering machine. I miss that happy little greeting and the gratification of punching the play button to listen to the message. Is the seclusion of the quarantine doing this to me, that I yearn for the companionship of an answering machine?

• To keep us all safe and healthy, parks and gyms are closed. Ergo, one of the best ways to get exercise is to walk in our neighborhoods. I’ve walked every day but two since we were told to stay safe at home on March 13. I’ve upped my mileage since those first walks and now I have an average number of steps that I strive to reach every day. I’ve become obsessed with my daily steps. Is anyone else willing to admit that sometimes they walk around the house late and night to get their step count up? Kitchen to dining room to hallway to bedroom to bedroom to hallway to nook and back to kitchen. (I do this while I’m brushing my teeth too.) Might this be the real reason I’m not getting to bed until 11:30 p.m.?

• I came upon a word today that I had to look up, and then I fell in love with it.

Used to express surprise or gratitude, the archaic word is gramercy. During this pandemic—this extraordinary little dot on the 66-million-year-long human timeline—I strive to find reasons every day to give thanks. Today, when I watched Papa Goose and Mother Goose escort their six bumbling bundles of yellow fluff across the lake in perfect single file, I couldn’t help but laugh. There is no coronavirus in their lives. Nothing is out of the ordinary for this family of geese since the chicks hatched on April 30.

They’re taking one day at a time, enjoying their time together, the parent geese as calm as the turtles sunning on the snags. But the goslings paddle across the water in a frenzy, as if they’re Charlie Chaplin wanna-bes in a fast-motion film. They’re adorable.

Five Fun Facts About… White-Faced Ibis

This week’s featured animal is the white-faced ibis.

White-faced ibis are not regular residents of Estes Valley. They do, however, migrate through every spring.

Starting in late April and through mid-May you can expect to see about a half dozen flocks of these stunning and unique looking birds as they stop to rest and feed in Lake Estes. They never stay long—usually only a few hours unless a storm prevents them from flying over the Continental Di-

vide—as they migrate north and west to their summer nesting grounds, including in North Park, Colo.

1. White-faced ibis are a wading bird that can be found in fresh or salt-water habitats scattered throughout the West and in coastal marshes in Louisiana and Texas. In some locations, as many as several hundred will feed together.

2. These beautiful birds are the only ibis found in the western U. S. 3. A group of ibis is called a “congregation” or a “stand. ” 4. The population of white-faced ibis had been on the decline throughout their region due to habitat loss and the use of pesticides like DDT. Their numbers seem to be rebounding in the last few decades after the banning of DDT and the conservation of wetland habitats.

5. The birds appear black when flying overhead. On closer examination when the birds are on the ground, you will see that they have a white ring around their eyes, have red eyes and legs, and have very vibrant and iridescent bronze-brown feathers.

Research shows that quality matters in early childhood programs. When young children have access to a nurturing learning environment and high-quality care, they are better prepared for school and life success. School readiness is more than knowing numbers, letters and colors. The early years are the most critical time for brain development, and experiences during these years set the trajectory for a person’s ability to think critically, solve problems, get along with others, and regulate emotions.

This spring, Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) was pleased to be able to offer “mini-grants” to licensed childcare and preschool programs who requested support. Programs could apply for any projects, materials, supplies, or initiatives, which would benefit the quality of their program and af-

fect the positive experience for children in their care.

Grants were awarded as follows: • $500 to Mountain Top Preschool and Childcare Center for new cubby lockers for children to store jackets and belongings, and cabinets to store yoga mats • $500 to Life Long Learning of Estes Valley Preschool for new art and science supplies.

• $500 to Rose’s Child Care to acquire new outdoor play equipment, books and arts and crafts materials.

EVICS provides services to strengthen and support families and children in the early years of life. Many thanks to the numerous community groups, individuals, and businesses who support the EVICS Family Resource Center and make a difference for young children and families in the Estes Valley.

We’ve all been mysteriously lured into them.

You know, those incessant pitches for products on television, Facebook, and in brief interludes between cell phone games. I’m not proud and I’ll admit that I’ve become willing prey for a few of the ads. But during the past couple months, it seems like we’ve been deluged with even more of those indestructible skillets we can’t live without, not to mention exercise devices promising to shed weight with little if any physical effort, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The exercise devices, however, have been particularly intriguing to me since the pounds are beginning to creep back due to reduced physical activity and more time spent immobile in front of the computer.

One of my favorites is the mini exercise bicycle. While sitting at your desk or watching the latest movie on Netflix or Amazon Prime, you can peddle away to your heart’s contest. The best part? It conveniently stashes away under your desk when not in use (which would probably be the week after I got it). The machines also provide all sorts of digital information so you can track your progress. The testimonials are hard to ignore; one lady claims she lost thirty pounds simply spinning away.

The most intriguing device I’ve seen to date appeared on our television for the first time earlier this week. It’s a small, rectangular, electrified platform that vibrates. According to the manufacturer’s claim the jiggling activates all sorts of muscle groups causing the body to become firmer and lead to weight loss.

And maybe it does. But watching the video with the svelte men and women demonstrating the machine, my brain took a trip back in time. Suddenly I could see black and white television commercials with smiling people bound to machines by wide vibrating belts that promised to do the same exact thing as the smaller, more modern version.

Then there are the never-ending gurus promoting their exercise plans. Many years ago—during Jane Fonda’s prowess in fitness programs—my neighbor and I used to sit for hours eating Snickers candy bars and drinking soda while Jane put herself through exhausting routines in her videos. More recently, there’s a young man promoting his program of chair-based exercises directed toward improving flexibility and balance (he obviously knows my age). These advertisements appear between rounds as a friend and I compete in the Scrabble-like game

of “Words for Friends.” While I “x-out” of most of the videos when given the option, I watch his to the end because this young man is actually quite goodlooking (I’m not that old).

Most recently, I did purchase a dumpling maker that was promoted on Facebook. It came all the way from China (no surprise there)—through customs and everything. Imagine that.

But I really do like it. One tool cuts the dough into rounds and then there’s a press you use to seal the little packets once they’re filled. The only problem is that I’ve yet to find a recipe that works because the unit is so small. However, I’m not giving up.

Commercials and advertisements like these have a long history in our country and some of the products have stood the test of time, transitioning into the 21st century without skipping a beat. Remember the “Popeil Pocket Fisherman?” It’s still around in retail stores for about $22, but a vintage 1972 version will set you back more than three times that amount. Remember Ginsu knives?

One of the things I had to have way back when was Suzanne Somers’ “Thigh Master.” Okay: I probably only used it a handful of times, but I had one. Today’s version is much sleeker and more colorful, but the technology hasn’t changed.

My own all-time personal favorite is a device Joel discovered on one of those “As seen on TV” television advertisements. The product is called “The Eggstractor” and believe it or not, you can still buy one of those, too. In fact, I just watched a You Tube review where it was one of three products the gentleman compared. It ranked last because the darn thing hasn’t gotten any better at doing what it was intended to do. Its purpose was to shell perfect hardboiled eggs. But, take our advice—ignore the urge to order one—that is unless you’re looking for some cheap and rather messy entertainment. Many years ago, our sons and their wives were here in Estes Park to celebrate Easter. Joel pulled out “The Eggstractor” to give it a try. Did it shell the eggs as advertised?

No. But with the device we could sure shoot them across the room with great success.

In closing, as tempted as I am to investigate the mini exercise bike, I know that a brisk walk with our dogs or our horses around the neighborhood would be much more beneficial and more fun in the end. That’s my new goal and I’m going to drag Joel along with me. We’ll see how it goes.

“Kills 99.9 percent of germs” “Kills 99.99 percent of germs” “Sanitizing” “Disinfecting” “Virucidal”–Product labels Keeping yourself and your family safe during this coronavirus epidemic has become everyone's top priority. Covid19 virus is around us, but we cannot smell it or feel it, and we cannot see it on surfaces, on our hands, or floating in the air. How do you clean something up if you can't tell if it's even there?

Some viruses, like norovirus, are easily destroyed, while others, like hepatitis B, are more tenacious. Coronaviruses are vulnerable to many agents, although since Covid-19 is a new strain, we can't be certain about it.

Covid-19 virus is a strand of RNA inside a protein shell. Anything that damages the protein shell will destroy the virus. Since the virus is not a living thing, it cannot be suffocated or drowned, it is not damaged by freezing or sunshine, and it is far too small to be squashed.

The most basic cleansing method for Covid-19 is handwashing for half a minute. Soap or detergent disrupts the protein shell and rinsing with lots of water washes the viruses away. Any soap or detergent will do; just wash long enough.

Alcohol gel hand sanitizer works very well, although just dabbing on your hands is not sufficient. The EPA reports that at least one minute of contact is needed, so get your hands wet with the stuff and let it dry out on its own. Plain rubbing alcohol (sixty-five percent concentration) works just as well, but it irritates the skin; commercial hand sanitizers have moisturizers in them to protect your hands.

Quaternary ammonium compounds, the ones with fifty letters in their names, are the ingredients in hospital-type disinfectants. There are hundreds of such compounds. They destroy Covid-19, but require longer contact time, up to ten

minutes.

Hydrogen peroxide is effective in concentrations as low as 0.5 percent; the brown plastic bottles sold in pharmacies are usually two percent. It has no odor, does not burn the skin, and looks just like water. You can put it in a spray bottle and spritz sealed packages from the grocery store, boxes delivered by UPS, doorknobs and handles— just about anything. One minute of contact time is recommended by the EPA. Household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) sterilizes nearly everything, but it is very harsh to skin. One part bleach to twenty parts water (0.25 percent) is plenty strong to neutralize Covid-19, although at least five minutes of contact is recommended.

Citric acid gives lemons, limes and grapefruit their sour taste; it is used in home canning, desserts, and beverages.

A five percent solution (similar to lemon juice) is an effective agent against many viruses; it has not been tested against Covid-19. Three tablespoons of the powder in a quart of water makes a five percent solution. If you are concerned spraying vegetables and fruits with bleach or disinfectants, citric acid may be an alternative.

Washing clothes in a washer will sanitize them without further chemical treatment. Toss your fabric mask in with the clothes and you can use it again; you can't wash and reuse paper surgical-type masks.

Many of these chemicals are for sale at hardware stores, home improvement stores, and big box stores, as well as grocery stores and pharmacies, and on-line.

Always read the labels before buying them; not every product advertised as “germicidal” includes the ingredients discussed here.

EPMS One Of Five Schools Announced As Winners In Rocky Mountain Environmental Challenge Schools presented innovative ideas that address natural hazard risks in Colorado Today, Earth Force and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the winners of the 2020 Rocky Mountain Environmental Challenge (RMEC). Winners include teams from schools in Fort Collins, Estes Park and Milliken, Colorado.

First Place – Blevins Middle School (Fort Collins) seventh and eighth grade students who proposed a community

awareness event to encourage students and their families to create family emergency plans.

Second Place – Estes Park Middle School sixth grade students who developed a community awareness and grassroots mitigation campaign to address fire risks in their community.

Third Place – Mountain Sage Community School (Fort Collins) sixth and seventh grader students who developed an emergency preparedness plan for the school in case of a blizzard or flood.

Fourth Place – Compass Community

Collaborative School (Fort Collins) middle and high school students who developed a proposal to organize a community flood awareness and preparedness event at the Poudre Valley Mobile Home Park.

Fifth Place – Knowledge Quest Academy (Milliken) students who created a plan to design and install park shelters and bus stops to keep residents safe during a storm event.

The RMEC is an annual competition sponsored by Earth Force and FEMA that combines project-based learning with the latest research in STEM education. Student teams from schools across the state submit a project that applies real-life solutions to local natural hazard risks in their community for a chance to win prize money to fund their project.

Prizes range from $1,000 for the first place winner to $200 for the fifth place finalist. All prize money was donated by the Association of State Floodplain Managers Foundation to further its dedication to reducing the risk and impacts of floods on people and communities.

“We’ve helped educators for more than 25 years develop programming that engages students in STEM skills while connecting them to the local community,” said Vince Meldrum, President and CEO of Earth Force. “This year, we’re so im-

pressed by the submissions we received for the RMEC and proud that the next generation has the critical thinking skills and citizenship to solve real issues here in Colorado.”

“FEMA is proud to support the Rocky Mountain Environmental Challenge and local students as they create solutions to risks and hazards that Coloradans face every day,” said Tony Mendes, Senior Emergency Management Specialist of FEMA Region 8. “Natural hazards can happen at any time. We’re excited to see the finalists follow through with their projects as we work together to mitigate those risks and minimize the hazard threats to our communities.”

The RMEC also includes professional development opportunities at no-cost for participating teachers and culminates in a summit for all schools where the official winners will be announced. The summit, originally planned for May 7, 2020, has been postponed until later this year due to COVID-19, and Earth Force and FEMA are looking for alternative ways to celebrate the students’ hard work.

Per Governor Polis, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is beginning to reopen campgrounds at Colorado state parks after COVID-19 closures that had been in effect since March 26. Campgrounds will begin to reopen May 12, launching a phased reopening that will occur across the park system in coordination with park managers and local officials.

Cabins, yurts, tipis, group facilities, and other reservable day-use facilities remain closed until further notice. Please review our best practices for camping as we begin opening to overnight visitors with

continued COVID-19 restrictions in place.

Use CPWShop.com to find reservable sites Customers who wish to search for campsites available to reserve should visit www.cpwshop.com and click on “Visit a Park.” Here, customers can

search for a park name or location, type of site, and/or date and search for available campgrounds.

If a customer enters specific dates and the number of nights requested, all parks with available campsites will have the option to “book sites.” If no sites are available, visitors will see an option to view the “next available date.”

If a specific date is not entered, customers may “search campgrounds” to view a list of all parks. They can then “check availability” at specific parks, or enter their preferred dates to see any available sites for those dates.

Other state park recreation opportunities People may still visit state parks for day-use recreation if they are not planning to camp. As of today, non-campground outdoor areas of parks, including trails, boat ramps, marinas, and shorelines remain open.

Visitors are reminded to practice social distancing, maintain at least six feet between other visitors and wear face coverings where six feet of distance cannot be maintained. CPW managers have the discretion to close areas that do not allow for social distancing. CPW encourages people to take local county and state stay-at-home orders seriously, and limit travel to local destinations for recreating. Anyone demonstrating signs of illness, such as coughing, fever or shortness of breath should stay home.

All visitor centers and park offices remain closed, and reopening plans will be posted on the CPW website when available. Restrooms remain open, and visitors are advised to bring soap for handwashing and alcohol-based hand sanitizers when water is not available.

Most importantly, CPW recommends that everyone follow precautionary guidance issued by the CDC, CDPHE, public local health agencies, and the Colorado Governor’s Office when recreating in the outdoors.

Book By Estes Park Author Recognized As Best Travel Book Of The Year

Hiking Rocky Mountain National Park: The Essential Guide, a new book by local photographer and author Erik Stensland has been recognized as the Best Travel Book of the Year by the Independent Book Publishers Association at their 32nd annual award ceremony. The ceremony was scheduled to be held in Los Angeles, California but due to the Covid19 crisis was held online on Friday May 8th. Hiking Rocky Mountain National Park: The Essential Guide received the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ in the Travel Book category. This is regarded as one of the highest national honors for indie publishers and self-published authors.

Stensland’s book also shared second place in the Sports and Recreation Category with a book published by the outdoor gear company Patagonia.

"This year's list of IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ winners rest at the pinnacle of professional independent publishing. These are the best of the best," said Independent Book Publishers Association CEO Angela Bole. This year there were 1,700 entries for the various categories. Each book is judged by a panel of independent specialists from across the country. This year there were 160 book publishing professionals including librarians, bookstore owners, re-

viewers, designers, publicity managers, and editors who judged the books.

Every book is evaluated for both its editorial content and its design.

Hiking Rocky Mountain National Park: The Essential Guide is a new hiking guide for Rocky Mountain National Park published by Rocky Trail Press. It was written to help the growing number of visitors know how to visit the park both safely and responsibly, while truly

won Inspirational Book of the Year.

He has also written other books such as a pocket version of this hiking guide, Photographing Rocky Mountain National Park and Memories of Rocky Mountain National Park. “I’LL LOVE YOU FOREVER, I’LL LIKE YOU FOR ALWAYS!” I let Mothers’ Day sneak up on me last week, not to the point of forgetting to honor my wife on that special day, (despite her reminding me, “I’m not your Mother!” However, I missed out on honoring ‘mothers’ in the article I wrote. Therefore I want to take my hat off to and honor all mothers belatedly this week. We witness, quite frequently, the presenting of a plaque to ‘an everyday hero’. These are all presented to ordinary people who have done extraordinary things that have blessed the lives of others. That is what we would like to give to all the mothers who have served so gallantly and sacrificially for their children.

But how do we do that in a way that will truly honor the mothers we know?

One of the best books I was ever introduced to, entitled ‘Love You Forever’, has been a best seller for years. The first time I read it aloud to conclude a parenting seminar a woman came up with tear-dimmed eyes and said, “That’s not fair!”, going on to acknowledge that she felt she had not shown the tolerance and patience that the mother in the book showed to her boy. The author gives us permission to quote parts of the book in order to review it so that’s what my intent is. Please keep in mind that I believe that the mother in the book is a picture of more of the mothers I know than those not.

The book begins with “A mother held her little baby…and sings ‘I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always.” As the baby grows into a toddler and gets into everything, driving his mother ‘crazy’, she continues to sing the song, “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always.” When he gets to be nine, presenting even more new challenges, she, daily, after he goes to bed, sings her song. (Review it in your mind with your children in your thoughts.) When the boy becomes a teenager with all the antics that accompany that age level the mother always ends her day with the singing of the song, “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.” As the boy enters manhood, she continues to honor him with the song. The book ends with the mother growing feeble and, now it’s time for the boy (man) to sing the song to her, and then goes home and sings the song to his own new baby. “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always.”

I love the book because it reminds me of my mother and my wife, the mother of my children, and so many other mothers that I know…mothers in it for the long haul who love their children unconditionally, ‘loving / liking’ regardless of disappointments and shortcomings, always there for their children.

‘Happy Mother’s Day’ to all such ‘heroes’ . Long after I read the book…crying each time I read it…I came across the story behind the book…and I cried some more. I’ll share it briefly with you. The truth behind the book, is that the author, Robert Munsch, used to sing the song in honor of two children that he and his wife, Ann, would not be able to raise and sing to in life. They had two children, stillborn, during a short time and then learned they could not have children, so the song was being sung for two children in heaven, children they would never be privileged to hold, nor raise, thus, missing out on all the joys that motherhood and parenting give to any couple privileged to have sons or daughters to enrich their lives.

So, the message of this article is to remind us that we need to both honor the mothers we know that have this great love for their children, and to count the great blessing that God showers on us when we are blessed to ‘partner’ with him in having and raising children that can honor Him, and bless us, as they grow into adulthood with an attitude of ‘I’ll love you forever, like you for always’, to their parents, their children, and Bob Lewis others, to the glory of God.

Local Bigfoot Lore Book Needs Your Stories

I organize the Estes Park Art Studio Tour and often find myself in conversation with local artists. This week, I was investigating a new project by local illustrator Peter Gaustad about Bigfoot and other local lore. Gaustad taught college art for over 20 years and his illustrations are regularly commissioned for magazine publications. In “normal times,” he participates in a monthly Writers Gathering at Inkwell and Brew, where hermetic poets, high school kids and any curious cat can share spoken word and short stories.

I thought this conversation was worth sharing. It is always great to hear about creative endeavors—in all times, but especially now. And especially community projects that can be done 6 feet apart!

What is this project about?

I am collecting stories from local residents about Bigfoot sightings. This will become a book that compiles witness statements, stories, and illustrations from sightings here in Estes Valley. It may also include a map of sighting locations; it will depend on what people present.

Are you a Bigfoot hunter?

No, I am a Bigfoot enthusiast. I have a huge collection of books that range from research to off-the-chart stories. I am interested in cryptozoology, the study of unknown animals. The unusual, off-the-beaten-track has always interested me.

When I was young, monster magazines and movies fueled my imagination. As a teenager, I saw a frozen Bigfoot in a sideshow exhibition at the Minnesota State Fair and I was sold.

Why is this project important?

It is clear, based on my experience attending local Bigfoot conferences, that there is activity here and people have stories to share. This is an opportunity to compile those local stories into a book. Also, I have observed that people are sometimes reluctant to tell their stories. Locals can write to me and share their stories anonymously (or not) through the book.

National Poppy Day Observed By ALA The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 is announcing the locations planned to distribute the red poppy, honoring our veterans, military and their families as reminder to be thankful for life, love, and happiness and keeping alive the memories of those who gave us our freedoms. The Loveland High Plains Arts Council (LHPAC) has announced the postponement of Sculpture in the Park Show & Sale until 2021. Sponsored by LHPAC, the Show and Sale annually hosts talented sculptors from around the world. This outstanding exhibit held in Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, Colo. attracts 15,000 to 20,000 art lovers and collectors from across the country.

In 2019, sales exceeded $1,500,000, with over 82% of the artists selling their work.

“The very nature of Sculpture in the Park is such that our attendees can mingle with the artists, purchase their work, and enjoy the great beauty of the sculp-

ture in Loveland’s own Benson Sculpture Garden,” said Tracy Hogue, LHPAC Board President. “It’s such an iconic event.”

LHPAC Executive Director Kristi Elyce added, “This is the first time since our inception the event has been postponed.

However, our board has agreed that, in the best interest of our artists, volunteers, patrons, sponsors and guests, we needed to put everyone’s health and safety first and adhere to social distancing guidelines. We look forward to 2021 when we’ll celebrate sculpture in Loveland once again.”

Estes Valley Watershed Coalition Continues Outdoor Volunteer Projects Another successful #socialdistancing volunteer day in the books! Throughout our Valley, the Estes Valley Watershed Coalition (EVWC) continues to work quietly on water restoration projects, no thanks to the 2013 flood that devastated our community. Working with the approval from the local authorities, the EVWC teamed with the Wandering Wildlife Society’s – Wildlife Network member Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA) and the Weed Warriors to begin elk fence removal, weed mitigation, and trash pick-up along Fish Creek.

A beautiful day for our 19 volunteers that helped to remove approximately 50 yards of elk fencing, up-rooted hundreds of noxious weeds, and collected numerous bags of debris. Thank you ELSA, the

Weed Warriors and those who joined in!

The Estes Valley Watershed Coalition relies on financial donations and volunteer hours to continue restoration work throughout the Estes Valley and weather permitting, plans to schedule weekly volunteer projects. For most of us, the 2020 Census has not been at the top of mind in recent months. Yes, we’ve had other things to think about.

And yet—as we gear up for the economic recovery of the Estes Valley, taking a few minutes to self-respond to the Census is one of the simplest actions we can take to make sure our great community gets adequate funding for roads, veterans’ services, and much more.

That’s funding for ten years! And once the Census count is done, it’s done. If we don’t get counted, dollars that should rightfully come here will divert somewhere else. How many dollars? One Colorado study estimates $1500 annually comes into a community for every person counted.

Kids (including babies and toddlers), along with new Americans, are often the folks who get missed in the official count. We’re here with the friendly reminder that *everyone* counts for the Census.

Getting counted in 2020 is safe—and easier than ever with the online option.

The Census Bureau is aware that many people in Estes Park get their mail at PO boxes, and they’re working to get a mailer directed to those folks in the coming weeks.

How are we all doing with self-responses? We’re getting there, but we’ve got a ways to go. As of last week, Estes Park was at a 41.6% self-response rate.

Fort Collins was at 65%.

Understandable factors pose unique local challenges, like the aforementioned PO boxes, and the number of second-home residences, which will ultimately get adjusted out of the total.

But with five minutes of effort, we can get the percentage climbing.

You can even have fun in the process, like making it a neighborhood challenge. We initiated a library staff challenge, for everyone to complete their census by the end of April: library staff households are 100% counted!

The library has been grateful to work on Census efforts with our partners at the Town of Estes Park, supported along the way with a grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and Larimer County.

Library’s Summer Reading Program To Begin May 22 Summer is one of the best times to relax and enjoy the delights of reading. All the more fulfilling when you can track of your reading time, earn great prizes, and join friends and neighbors in a valleywide reading challenge.

Readers of all ages are invited to take part in the 2020 Summer Reading Program hosted by the Estes Valley Library.

This annual celebration of literacy, learning and community will kick off on May 22, inspired by theme, “Imagine Your Story.” Books, whether read or listened to, help us to reflect upon the stories of our own lives, while taking us on fascinating journeys beyond ourselves.

This summer, participants will again enjoy the convenience of logging reading minutes online—from anywhere, 24/7.

Those who had an account last year will be able to use the same login. New participants can create their account next

week. Library staff are happy to assist anyone with the sign-in process.

There are special prizes for all ages.

That includes adults, teens, and kids, including preschoolers, toddlers and babies who may not be able to read but are never too young to listen to stories read aloud.

While the library building is closed to the public, there are plans for the prizes to be distributed through the library’s new curbside pick-up service. More details on the process will be available on May 22.

Rotary Club of Estes Park recently contributed $8,300 to Estes Park Health Foundation’s Coronavirus and Subsequent Emergency Response Fund. The contribution is a result of an initial gift from Rotary Club of Estes Park and individual club member donations, including matching funds from members. The Foundation’s fund was established to help with the hospital’s work to obtain additional personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff, care for the uninsured, acquire equipment, upgrade facilities, and other needs that may arise.

So far, the Estes Park Health Foundation has secured funding to convert four patient rooms to negative pressure rooms, which prevent air from the room of an infected patient from escaping out into the building and infecting other patients and staff. The retrofit to these rooms is complete.

"This pandemic has impacted us all, through illness of friends and family in other areas, social restrictions that limit our interactions and travel, increased anxiety, unemployment, and economic fears," said Kevin Mullin, Executive Director of the Estes Park Health Foundation. "Our town is preparing for the threat caused by COVID-19, and Estes Park Health Foundation is pleased to support this preparedness."

"The Rotary Club of Estes Park's history of supporting local needs is a hallmark of this group. The Estes Park Health Foundation very much appreciates this grant," Mullin said. "The additional pledge of club members to match donations will multiply the club's generosity and help the foundation to reach its goal."

All Italian Words Are Like A Truffle Vino Giu This title is one of my favorite lines in Eat, Pray, Love! That's how my life has been since March 17, 2020. As the owner of Vino Giù and with strong Italian

blood running through my veins, I have watched that movie daily trying to figure all this out. I have indulged lately in the artistry of charcuterie, the flavorful notes of vino on my lips, and the delicious sweetness of assorted chocolate truffles.

As the quote on the wall over the community table reads, " Chocolate doesn't ask questions, it simply understands." I have cried, been inspired, gained weight, lost money...but I have enjoyed every ounce of it all.

Throughout this journey of rules, regu-

lations, shutdowns, and Facebook commentary, I have come up with some amazing insights about what's important in life. Here are some I'd like to share: People are important and connection is where the heart is, take time to relax and unwind now while you have time, and don't sweat the small stuff because you never know when you'll need a good mindset and bottle of wine to deal with the big stuff.

These insights and many more are why I created Vino Giù. I wanted this town and all of the many visitors that come our way to experience the beauty of what we have everyday. It's a place to relax, decompress, enjoy the sweetness of doing nothing (another favorite quote in Eat, Pray, Love- Dolce far niente).

During this "pause," my mind has had a chance to get creative again. We have

some fun and exciting ways to share our love of wine, cheese, charcuterie, chocolates and more with you until we can open full force again. Here are some new things we are adding to the mix: Picnic in the Park packages, Virtual Wine Pairings, and Date Night. We ask that you support us through this by placing orders and supporting local businesses in re-opening.

The social distancing and stay-athome orders necessitated by the coronavirus have led many of us to feel isolated. Still, we’ve fought back through social media, “virtual” gatherings and walks in the neighborhood, where we could greet friends and neighbors (from six feet away). But when you’re dealing with the financial effects of the virus and you’re investing alone, you could encounter some problems that may prove costly.

Of course, with so much investmentrelated information available online, on television and in any number of periodicals, it’s not surprising that some people feel they can invest without any assistance. But the volatility of the financial markets over the past few months has also pointed to the dangers of going solo in the investment world.

And you might find that a professional financial advisor can help you in several ways, including the following: Taking emotions out of investing. During this period of market turbulence, many self-guided investors are letting their emotions drive their investment decisions. As a result, they sell investments when their price is down, “locking in” their losses. Furthermore, if they then stay out of the financial markets, they will miss out on the eventual recovery – and some of the biggest gains in market rallies usually occur right at the beginning. But if you work with a financial advisor who has helped you develop a personalized investment strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you will be far less likely to react to extreme market conditions by making ill-advised decisions.

Looking Back On Women’s History Month March was Women’s History Month and I missed writing about it due to Covid-19. Even though it’s now May I’d still like to take a look at some amazing, accomplished women. With just a few exceptions like Madame Marie Curie, women just weren’t acknowledged in history or science textbooks. This isn’t because women weren’t involved with discoveries but because men wrote the majority of historical texts and didn’t tend to write about women’s accomplishments. Let’s take a break from Covid-19 and instead glance back at some of these over-looked women and re-evaluate their work and status.

Have you ever heard of Rosalind Franklin, the woman who laid the groundwork for one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of the last hundred years? I wrote a paper on her years ago when I was at Fordham and was disheartened to discover how overlooked she was. Franklin had nearly figured out the DNA molecule structure when another researcher showed one of her Xray images to James Watson. From that X-ray, Watson quickly figured out the structure of DNA was a double helix and, with Francis Crick, published that finding in the journal Nature. Because of her work, Crick and Watson turned away from their idea of a three-helix model and developed the double helix model of the DNA strand we know today. Those two scientists won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1962 for this discovery. Unfortunately, their story usually leaves out Ms. Franklin whose calculations and measurements played an essential part in the discovery.

So just for fun, here are some other amazing women you may or may not have heard of: Ruth Rogan Benerito was an American chemist and pioneer in bioproducts who developed a method to harvest fats from seeds for use in intravenous feeding of medical patients. This system became the foundation for the system we still use today. An AfricanAmerican, Katherine Johnson, who died this February at age 101, was one of several hundred extremely capable yet largely unheralded women who worked as NASA mathematicians. She played a

huge role in calculating key trajectories in the Space Race - calculating the trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space, as well as for the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon - you may have seen her in the movie, Hidden Figures. Better known as a Hollywood “Bombshell”, Hedy Lamarr, was an inventor and pioneer in the field of wireless communications. Along with co-inventor, George Anthiel, she developed a secret communications system that formed an unbreakable code that helped combat the Nazis in World War II. After witnessing an accident at a textile mill, Margaret Knight conceived of a device that automatically stopped a machine if something got caught in it. Her invention saved many workers from serious injury or even death when it began being used in mills. I’d bet a lot of people don’t know that windshield whippers were invented by Mary Anderson who patented her car window cleaning device in 1903. The movie, Schindler’s List followed Oskar Schindler, who saved more than a thousand mostly PolishJewish refugees from the Holocaust by employing them in his factories during World War II. But have you ever heard of Irena Sendler, the Polish Catholic nurse and social worker who led a secret operation that successfully smuggled 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII, saving them from almost certain death? I’m sure you have heard of Dian Fossey whose extensive study of the mountain gorilla in Rwanda vastly increased the worldwide knowledge of the species and Primatologist Jane Goodall who is best known as the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. But have you heard of Biruté Galdikas? She took on the task of studying orangutans in Borneo. More elusive than either chimpanzees or gorillas, orangutans are solitary creatures, making them particularly difficult to locate and study. It took Galdikas a full week of hiking through thick, swamp-infested regions of the Bornean jungle before she even saw her first orangutan, and an incredible 12 years before the animals trusted her enough to tolerate her presence. In 1971 Stephanie Kwolek discovered that a liquid polymer solution had exceptional strength and stiffness. This discovery led to the invention of Kevlar, a synthetic material five times stronger than steel.

Kevlar is now used for bulletproof vests by soldiers and law enforcement as well as in helmets, skis, hiking and camping gear and suspension bridge cables. And for all of you who can’t leave the house without your phone, Randice-Lisa Atschul was issued a series of patents for the world’s first disposable cell phone in November 1999.

It quickly becomes obvious reading this list of accomplishments that we had some pretty amazing women to celebrate during Women’s History Month. Now, let’s take a quick look towards the future.

When NASA’s newest astronaut class graduated this January, it included five women who are part of the first class from NASA’s Artemis program. The

Artemis Program plans to land the first woman on the Moon by 2024. The program is also intended to be a stepping stone towards Mars – perhaps one of these women will also be in that group.

Five women were selected in 2017 from a record number of 18,000 applicants for a total class of eleven members. Their names are Kayla Barron, Engineer and Navy Officer; Zena Cardman, Marine Scientist and Microbiologist; Jasmin Moghbeli, Helicopter Pilot and Aerospace Engineer; Loral O’Hara, Research Engineer and Wilderness First Responder; Jessica Watkins, from Lafayette, Colorado, Geologist and Curiosity Collaborator. Happy Women’s History Month two months late!

Mary Mesropian has lived in the Estes Park area since 1994 and was the Volunteer Coordinator of Hospice of the Estes Valley in the late 90s until 2000 when she became Executive Director of Estes Valley Crisis Advocates. For Those Soon To Graduate By: J.M.

For those soon to graduate. You live in important times. The decisions you make will impact not just you, but those around you, their safety and prosperity, now and for decades to come.

This is the 1919 high school graduating class of Canon City, Colorado. Their education was also interrupted by an outbreak. That outbreak spared no social class, race, or nationality, but was especially devastating to those between the ages of 20 to 40, meaning these young men and women might have been called on to assist at the bedside of an older sister or brother, an aunt or uncle, or one or both of their parents.

Their generation raised families that survived the Great Depression, and fought in World War II. They knew illness and the frustration of inadequate medicine, and worked to improve insulin, antibiotics, and develop safer surgeries and blood transfusions. These young people were a testament to hardship and temporarily interrupted plans creating new pathways and opportunities, not excuses. Not justification for sliding by, or becoming cynical, or taking risks everyone knows are stupid, just because you want to impress your friends.

You may not think so right now, but you have actually been given a gift, a voice, a seat at the table. You will still need life experience, and you must, absolutely must, continue to learn, but the

older folks will now, at least temporarily, and perhaps longer than temporarily, be a bit more willing to listen. Because they need your help. In the world of thinking they were close to perfection, nearing the top, with their mundane tasks performed by electronic devices and their movies and their music convincing them they were invincible, they forgot about the frailty and unpredictability of life on this planet. They forgot who was really in control.

Do not squander this opportunity. Do not waste the challenge in front of you, right there at your feet. Do not, ever, give in to despair, or worry about whether things are hopeless. I had the distinct honor a few years back of talking to an older woman who survived 30 hours trapped as a young girl on a truck converted into a school bus in a blinding spring snowstorm on the plains, the driver lost out in the blizzard seeking help, the bus without heat after the fuel tank ran dry. Her classmates around her were dying of the cold, icicles covering the inside of the vehicle as remaining survivors piled in a heap in the back of the truck, desperate to share body heat. The storm abated, the stranded somehow discovered, revived, nowhere near a decent hospital, far from the road.

The human organism, programmed to

live, also defaults to comfort those in need. We are counting on you, on each and every one of you. You must not hate.

You must search out those who are lost.

You must never give up, no matter how dark or bitter or overwhelming the night. You must achieve success, or wear yourself out trying to succeed where we as a people failed. You must be more tolerant, more in tune with the environment, waste less time on frivolous things, and more willing to listen to opinions that differ from your own, perhaps even ignorant half-truths expressed in an unwanted tongue.

Our genetic material is 99.99% identical across countries and races and belief

systems, and way more evolved that the insignificant scrap of garbage that is currently getting the best of us because we grew complacent. Your job from this day forward is to tolerate our shortcomings, our blind spots, but not allow our leaders to get complacent. If you are right, if the facts give you justification, if your background gives you particular insight, you need to stand up for what you believe, gain confidence in the sound of your voice, and not let more powerful individuals shout you down. Harmonize where you can, and where it makes sense, but remember if only perfect songbirds were allowed to sing, the world would be essentially devoid of song.

The Art Center Will Be Re-Opening May 15th !

The Art Center will open its doors this Friday from 12-4 p.m. and will follow the “winter” schedule of Friday through Mondays. The center is prepared to follow all the CDC and Larimer County guidelines. Masks must be worn to enter. “homemade” masks sewn by a couple of artist members will be available for a $5 donation. Gloves will also be on hand so that visitors can freely look through the bins and card racks safely. As an extra precaution, hand sanitizer will be provided. No more than ten people will be allowed inside at one time. Purchases can be made by credit card or by check.

The center is also offering private viewings for those who would prefer not to mingle with any others. Contact the Gallery Manager, Lars Sage for further information or arrangements. We look forward to welcoming you back or for the first time.

Curtis is a Colorado native, who has been a professional landscape photographer for the past five years. When asked about Colorado he often responds “I am always inspired by the beauty, grandness and how dramatic it can be. It is a gift we all should cherish and preserve. I love the change of seasons when the landscape takes on a new set of sights, sounds and smells. You never know what is around the next bend or what you'll find when you travel the back roads.”

Ghent’s exhibit will be on display until June 21st. Insufficient Reopening Plans During Covid-19 To The Editor: I am reading in the local papers about the number of business groups that are offering guidance to Estes Park businesses as the Town reopens. There are the usual list of advice groups such as the Economic Development Corporation, Chamber of Commerce, Visit Estes Park, and the local Lodging Association.

Unfortunately, this coalition has chosen not to include expertise from county and local physicians who understand the infection process and prevention of the Covid-19 virus. Furthermore, any reopening plan for our small town that does not include adequate Covid-19 testing for employees, is seriously flawed and likely to miss serious infection rates of local workers until disease becomes obvious. While this is no different than what many Western and Southern states are doing, we are a small Town that will be exposed to high density visitation mainly along one street, Elkhorn Avenue.

Estes Park will be in a somewhat unique position compared to other towns/cities in Colorado. When the park opens, thousands of people will come through Town and many of these will be carriers of the virus. Unfortunately, many of our tourists come from near states that have chosen not to have stay at home rules. Nebraska, Iowa, S. Dakota, and Texas as examples, will have their citizens come through here and they will likely be carriers of the virus at higher rates than people from states that restricted activity. These states are now the new hot spots for infection. Also, given the intensity of our visitation, we will likely have two strikes against us; a high rate of carriage and a high density of visitors. This will put our workers at high risk for acquiring the virus and passing it on to others in the community.

I think this will be different than what the average table server and bar tender will be exposed to in other cities in the Front Range. While most states are going through their highest risk times for the virus now, I think our summer density increase will create our most dangerous time this summer.

In addition to having the pro-business

groups like the EDC have input on how to open the Town to visitation, it would be essential to have local healthcare experts participate in the reopening plan for Estes Park as well. Prior to reopening, the Town Government should request that we obtain hundreds of Covid19 test kits in order to do baseline testing of a significant percentage of workers in Elkhorn Avenue establishments as they come on line to start the summer season. The same people can be retested multiple times over the summer to monitor the rate and degree of workers contracting the virus. Only then can we see as a community whether the use of masks and distancing is being effective. With this information, modifications of protective measures can be made. Exactly how many test kits do we have today?

While the Federal Government is not living up to its promises in terms of providing adequate testing to states, we are a small community that could provide a well defined area for testing. Our Town and County governments would be remiss if they did not contact our Federal Representatives and Governor Polis to request an adequate number of Covid19 test kits to provide on-going data that measures the infection rate of our front line workers. These politicians use “happy talk” to tell us how much they care for our welfare. Well, now is the time to put them on the spot and request specific tools to help us assess a reopening that seems to be implemented by local business people. Cory Gardner claims he has a great relationship with the President, so how about getting us the test kits we need prior to the summer rush of visitors. While there have been letters in our newspapers lately by business people who feel that even the basic wearing of masks is annoying and unfair. If we don’t include real testing for the virus, we may become a hotspot for infection if this attitude prevails. As one governor has said “don’t tell me what you think, tell me the facts.” For a safe reopening, we need facts and data, not good wishes.

Updates From Crossroads It seems as though “Loving Our Neighbor” has morphed into various definitions over the years, so I’d like to clear up a few misconceptions. Your neighbor can be the person next door or across the street, but when a teacher of the law asked Jesus what he meant by neighbor, the definition was expanded to define anyone in close proximity of where you are at any given time. You see, the Good Samaritan in the story that Jesus referenced was on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho when he came upon a man who was in need of immediate care, so obviously this wasn’t the person who lived next door to him in Samaria, but in fact it was a Jew who lived far from him and was considered an archenemy. Love for neighbor encompasses ANYONE we come in contact with that may need assistance from us. This opens the door quite wide for each one of us, because wherever we go there will be opportunities to put into practice “love for neighbor”. Be attentive this week to the people around you and be ready to fulfill the second greatest commandment by loving your neighbor.

Because we have been able to respond quickly and consistently with food and housing support, we have experienced a slight slowdown in the amount of people coming to Crossroads for assistance. I believe we’ve been able to saturate the first wave of neighbors in need with enough resources to get them through the initial shock of unemployment. I’m also speculating that some of the people we have served over the last two months are beginning to get called back to work and others are finding employment in the valley. This will give us some time to replenish, reorganize, and get ready for the second wave of people. We realize COVID-19 is far from being over and we’re prepared to keep serving people for as long as we can with as much as we can. We are grateful for our donors who make it possible for us to provide re-

sources to meet the needs of our neighbors. Thank you!

We are also extremely thankful for our volunteers. I was reminded by one of them last week that the 9,000 pounds of food being distributed each week in April wasn’t just carried to the vehicles of our hungry neighbors, but it was picked up at various locations from food providers, brought back to Crossroads to be stored on shelves until we had need of it in the food pantry at which time it was moved again. Once an order is taken and submitted to our volunteers, they select all the items off the shelves and weigh the food before transporting them outside of the building to the vehicle. Many hands are actively involved in collecting, organizing, packing, weighing, and distributing the food items. There are so many moving parts that make this happen and no robots are used at any time. Every neighbor seeking assistance is greeted by a fellow human being capable of expressing love in meaningful ways of meeting more than their need for food or housing. We are truly blessed to have a compassionate team of volunteers who eagerly show up to love our neighbors in word and deed.

After graduation, he joined Shell Oil Company as a computer programmer and shortly moved to Houston, Texas where he progressed through the ranks to Chief Information Officer of Royal Dutch Shell’s IT services division over a 31-year distinguished career. He traveled all over the world for work during this period where he constantly struggled with hitting his knees on the seat backs in front of him due to his tall stature. It’s no wonder he didn’t travel Alan Joseph Fraundorf, 68, of Estes Park, Colorado passed away unexpect- much after retirement!

Time Out By: Judi Smith Now that we have established that social distancing keeps the current crisis at bay (or most of it), we must pay attention to the stipulations laid upon us by science and government. To protect ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors, and even strangers, we must wear our masks in public, distance ourselves six feet from all but our own household, and wait (patiently?) for the incremental steps of reinstating our economy.

However, there is another side of the COVID-19 incident that needs to be addressed. With man, woman, and child sequestered by the Stay at Home orders the world has changed! The skies are blue! Without the “fog,” it is possible to see much greater distances. And wild animals, including wild goats, mountain lions, whales, and wild boars are responding to the sudden dearth of humans.

I can remember (from the 1950s) my grandmother’s coal furnace, considered state of the art when it was installed in 1928. The EPA’s “History of Air Pollution” tells us that a “new” phenomenon was discovered 52 years ago, in Donora, PA, an industrialized city full of steel and zinc smelters. A pocket of warm air had trapped the usual pollutants with nowhere to go, making people sick, and someone noticed. Times change! In 1955, the Air Pollution Control Act finally funded federal research into that experience and others like it. The Clean Air Act of 1963 authorized research into methods of measurement and control. Then came the Air Quality Act (1967) and, in 1970, 18 years after the start of the project, the Clean Air Act began setting regulations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created on Dec. 2nd 1970 to facilitate these regulations.

However, while levels did improve, this did not stop the continued spread of pollution into air, water, and land.

Laws come (and recently go) but the

pollution continues to be an ever-increasing problem. In the last 30 years, our knowledge has improved. We know that trucks, most cars, and many power plants burn oil and gas and that these fossil fuels cause irreparable harm to lungs and heart over long exposure.

(Better than coal but not nearly equivalent to energy from wind, water, and sun.) We know that respiratory and cardiac conditions increase susceptibility and fatality from COVID-19. Moreover, we know that the residents of highly populated industrial cities (or parts of cities) are dying at a greater rate than small rural towns with sufficient plant life.

The EPA has also realized that air pollution goes hand in hand with the increased temperature that melts our icecaps, changes our weather, attacks our shoreline properties, and increases the velocity of fire and flood. We now know that greenhouse gases, collected in our atmosphere, form a blanket not unlike that warm air pocket back in 1948, trapping particulates, carbon monoxide, and methane-not to mention the nitrous oxide (fossil fuels) and sulfur dioxide (burning coal) that become acid rain.

We also know that a two-month hiatus from pollution cleared the air, at least partially, dramatically lowering the levels of these toxic chemicals in the air we breathe. Perhaps, in the future, instead of relying on a cataclysmic attack of coronavirus (this or a new one) to clear the air of pollutants, we could simply schedule a “Stay at Home” whenever the particulate levels exceed a certain point, allow the air to clear, and pollution to return to a preordained level, and then return to work.

Better yet, we could reduce our reliance on coal, on oil and gas, and on landfilling waste that can be ecologically recovered. Then we would not need Mother Nature to put us in “time out.”

Alan was also an avid guitar player who played in a band in his younger days (Fields of Mourning). His children remember fondly his love of rock music and his tradition of playing School’s Out from Alice Cooper at the end of every school year. He also developed a passion for building furniture which included a custom case for all of the guitars he collected.

Alan was an amazing father of his two children and sacrificed much in order to love and support them. Leading by example, he taught them the importance of working hard and doing things the right way. Usually the smartest person in the room, he earned the respect of all. As most of you know, Alan was mostly a

man of very few words, but those words were powerful when spoken and seldom not forgotten. He also had a dry sense of humor that you could not help but laugh or smirk at.

He is survived by his two siblings (Phil Fraundorf and Janet Wandling), his two children (Seth Fraundorf and Jamie Beggs) as well as three grandchildren (Addison Beggs, Brody Beggs and Alexandra Fraundorf).

Funeral services are still being planned and we will update here once finalized. In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to share your notes, memories and photos at www.allnuttestespark.com which will serve to honor and memorialize Alan’s full life.

Ryan Earl Hoover

Ryan Earl Hoover went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 3, 2020. His loving wife Mary was by his side. He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Aviaya, brother Justin, and parents Cheryl and Ray Hoover. Ryan was born on April 20, 1980, in Guam, but spent most of his childhood in Arkansas. Ryan first came to Estes Park in 2004 where he worked at the Trail Ridge Store. During that season he made lifelong friends and fell in love with the mountains and town. He moved to Estes Park full time in 2008.

Ryan’s greatest joy was his daughter Aviaya and he enjoyed sharing his passion for the mountains with her every day.

Another of Ryan’s many passions in life was music. He was able to express his love and knowledge of music

through his work as the manager of Sgt. Peppers Music and Video. Ryan had such a warm and loving personality and heart for mission work. He served alongside other members of Rocky Mountain Church on several trips to Joplin, India, and Guatemala.

In May 2018 Ryan was diagnosed with ALS. He fought bravely and never stopped living and enjoying every day with his family and friends.

He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, extended family, church family, and the Estes Park community.

Irma Colin Irma Colin of Estes Park, CO, died in Loveland, CO on May 5, 2020. She was 84. Irma Eileen Halton was born in Salmon, ID on January 29, 1936.

After high school she served in the United States Navy. She received an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts from Aims Community College. Irma moved to Estes Park in 1970. She married her husband Richard “Dick” Colin December 7, 1974 at the Community Church in Estes Park, now the location of The Old Church Shops in downtown Estes Park.

Elaine G. Cabernoch Elaine G. Cabernoch, 100, beloved wife of the late Louis J. Cabernoch, died of natural causes on May 12, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Assisted Living Center in Estes Park, CO. She was born on Feb. 15, 1920 in Gardner, IL, the daughter of Thomas and Rosella (Nelle) (Curtin) Cruise. She grew up a farm girl and attended a small rural school in Dwight Township. Following high school graduation, she moved to Chicago, where she met her future husband Louis Cabernoch at a dance.

They married on November 9, 1940 at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Chicago.

They settled in Chicago and its suburbs, where they raised five children.

Retirement took them to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas and Dwight, Illinois.

In retirement Elaine volunteered with several Lutheran World Relief Mission Quilt groups. They donated handmade quilts to needy people around the world.

Elaine’s life was defined by her unconditional love for her large family and her steadfast Catholic faith. She will be remembered by many for her beautiful needlework and quilts and her love of gardening and baking.

Her loving husband Louis passed away on March 10, 1994. Elaine was predeceased by her son William T., brothers Bernard, John, and Thomas, sisters Margaret, Kathleen, Rose Marie, and granddaughter Jennifer Cabernoch.

Wes Hawkins Wes Hawkins died peacefully at home in Estes Park at age 84 after battling dementia for four years.

Thankfully, with Patty’s dedication — his loving wife of 64 years — we were able to care for him at home.

Forever grateful for a tranquil goodbye, we did our best to maintain Wes’ God-given dignity, surrounded by love. No more suffering, no more pain, no more Alzheimer’s disease.

Wes lived a wonderful, long and full life, and we miss him so very much.

We were so blessed to have him in our lives, loving us all so completely.

Wes and Patty met during high school and were sweethearts together ever since. Wes is survived by his wife Patty, eldest daughter Kathy, her husband Tim and their son Jacob; son Clay, his wife Amy and their son Will and daughter Carli; and younger daughter Melissa and daughters Ganga and Jamuna. Wes will always be to us a loving husband, devoted to his three children, daughter-in-law, son-in-law and very involved grandfather.

Wes was brilliant and kind. He loved the mountains and shared his passion for the outdoors with his children and grandchildren through many hikes and camping trips. He was a regular contributor to the Estes Park Trail Gazette with his RMNP Trail Guide articles. With his desire to live in the Rockies and his talent for building just about anything, Wes designed and built four mountain homes over the years. He was a devoted supporter of Patty, built a fabulous art studio for her in their home and often traveled with her when she offered fiber arts workshops. Wes and Patty always had family dogs, and he loved caring for them.

An acclaimed aerospace engineer, he worked for Morton-Thiokol (Utah), Rocketdyne (Texas), and 24 years with Ball Aerospace (Colorado). With an opportunity for early retirement, Wes honed his skills as an artist and woodworker,

while continuing his 50-year love of playing tenor banjo Dixieland band music.

Playing with the Estes Park Riverside Ramblers provided fun opportunities to share his gift of music.

An important part of Wes’ life was his faith. An active member of various Episcopal churches, Wes helped start St. Michael’s in Brigham City, Utah in the early 1960s. In Estes, Wes and Patty attended St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, where he was also very active. His presence in the world was a gift to us all. He has been released from his broken mind and body, and we know someday we will see him again, restored to fullness of life in Christ. What a glorious thought!

As a glimpse into Wes’ loving spirit, Patty just recently came across this poem he had copied into the back of a small notebook sometime after 2009: Marriage One or the other must leave.

One or the other must stay.

One or the other must grieve, That is forever the way.

That is the vow that was sworn, Faithful ’til death do us part.

Braving what had to be borne, Hiding the ache of the heart.

One howsoever adored, first must be summoned away, That is the will of the Lord, One or the other must stay.
