EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of June 14, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 7 calls for service. Power Outage July 7 Will Affect CR 43 Glen Haven & Retreat Estes Park Power and Communications to replace electric pole at switchbacks Estes Park Power and Communications has scheduled a power outage on July 7, 2020, along County Road 43 to allow the crew to set a new pole on the lower part of the switchbacks. The outage will begin at 3 p.m. and could last through 6 p.m. The affected area is along County Road 43 from the switchbacks to the end of the Estes Power & Communications service area, including all of Glen Haven and the Retreat.

All customers in this area will be affected by the outage. Outage notification signs have been placed along CR 43 and a map of the affected area can be found on the Estes Park Power Outage Public Information Map: https://arcg.is/1GGH0e The work will be done with a crane, requiring traffic control to be in place while the crane is in operation. Once the pole is set the crew will then transfer all power lines and equipment to the new pole. In order to perform this work as quickly and safely as possible, crews must turn off power to the affected area.

Town Offices Closed July 3 In Observance Of Independence Day The Town of Estes Park will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. Staff will resume normal operating hours Monday, July 6. For more information please call the Public Information Office at 970-577-3701.

Estes Park Police And The Enhance Law Enforcement Integrity Act Last week, Governor Polis signed SB20-217 -- the Enhance Law Enforcement Integrity Act. I’d like to share with you how the Estes Park Police Department is responding to this new Act. I am proud to say that over the years we have taken proactive measures that put us ahead of the curve in many ways.

To provide a high-level summary of the Enhance Law Enforcement Integrity Act, it allows no chokeholds; no use of deadly force unless there’s an imminent threat to the officers life, or to preserve the life of others; body cameras will be required for most interactions by 2023; and, the release of body cam footage is required after incidents. We are fortunate that the vast majority of our encounters with the people we serve are peaceful and without incident.

Fortunately, we have not had to use choke holds in our department. In the past our officers were trained that they can use choke holds as a last resort only to be used to save the officer’s life or the life of another person. With the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the allowance to use choke holds even in that circumstance was suspended in our department. Our leadership team is currently updating our policy to align with the Act by barring chokeholds.

The Estes Park Police Department has utilized body cameras for several years now. Our policy requires officers to wear the cameras at all times during patrol duties. The camera footage is maintained for evidence purposes and internal uses.

We are also updating our reporting procedures to comply with the Act, which among other details, ultimately requires the reporting of demographic information related to any officer-initiated contacts with the public to the Col-

orado Division of Criminal Justice in the coming years.

Our officers will be provided with both mandated and extra training provided by our insurer and POST (Police Officer Standards Training) to understand the new act and help incorporate any new procedures. We continually seek to improve our operations, and we look forward to adapting to the new requirements. We have highly trained and educated officers who care about doing the right thing. They care for our community because they are part of our community.

I’d like to share a statement I made recently: With you, we are watching concerned Americans gather in cities and towns across America to protest racism and the killing of George Floyd - sometimes gathering peacefully and sometimes not.

We proudly support peaceful protests like those held in Estes Park. And let's keep the cause in focus . . .

Law enforcement and all systems of power should equally serve and protect all citizens. We are proud of our community policing model and the strong partnerships we have formed with you.

Estes Park Police Department Warns Residents Of Scams Related To COVID-19 During the pandemic, the Estes Park Police Department and law enforcement agencies around the county have seen an increase in scams and fraud. It is also increasingly common to see the use of counterfeit bills when people are out of work. To learn how to identify U.S. currency, visit www.uscurrency.gov.

A new scam takes advantage of people expecting their government economic impact payments or "stimulus money."

Adult U.S. residents that meet established income limits are eligible to receive these payments. Scammers are using these stimulus payments to try to rip people off. They might try to get you to pay a fee to get your stimulus payment. Or they might try to convince you to give them your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number. The IRS will not contact you regarding your payment and you will never be required to pay a fee to obtain your money. Contact your bank. If you think you are a victim of identity theft or account fraud you need to call your bank immediately and tell them what hap-

pened. The bank should have a fraud department and you can ask them to monitor your account for unusual activity. You can also ask them if it is necessary for you to close out your current accounts and open new ones. You can also refer to our Identity Theft Prevention page for more information.

Contact the fraud departments of the three major credit bureaus. Place a fraud alert on your credit files. This will require credit agencies to contact you before opening any new accounts or making changes to your current accounts.

Ask how to get a copy of the report to submit to your bank, credit agencies and other financial institutions who may need proof that a crime was committed. Remember: Keep a typed or written log of all conversations you have with the scammers, your bank, the credit agencies, and law enforcement. Include the date and time of when you had a conversation, who you spoke with (person's name and extension number if applicable), the phone number you contacted and the information you provided.

Street Improvement Program Begins Week Of June 29 Contractors for the Town of Estes Park will begin the 2020 Street Improvement Program on Town-managed streets by late June. There will be separate contractors for the chip and crack seal work beginning June 29, and for the overlay and patching work, beginning July 13. Working hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Local access will be maintained during the work although there may be brief periods when onstreet parking and private driveways are not accessible.

Vance Brothers, Inc. is the contractor for the 2020 Chip and Crack Seal Program. Crack sealing will begin June 29 and is expected to last approximately two weeks, weather permitting. This work consists of applying hot asphalt sealant to cracks in a portion of Town streets, effectively preventing water from penetrating the roadways and reducing potholes.

Chip seal work will begin July 6 and is expected to last one week. Chip sealing consists of spraying asphalt oil on the existing street surface, followed by the placement of small aggregate stone “chips” to those areas. The chips are then compacted for maximum adherence to the asphalt oil. The excess chips are then swept from the surface and a fog seal coat of asphalt oil is applied to hold them in place. These surface treatments are not expected to result in any full road closures, and flaggers will be present during active construction to direct traffic.

Coulson Excavating Company, Inc. will begin the 2020 Overlay and Patching Program July 13, and its work is expected to continue through August. This program consists of overlaying or removing existing asphalt and replacing it with a new asphalt surface, as well as replacing concrete curb, gutter, and driveway connections.

Davis Parking Lot on Moraine Avenue (U.S. 36) will be repaved and restriped as a part of this program, and numerous roads throughout Town will receive overlay or patching improvements. Roads identified for overlay improvements include Big Horn Drive, Lexington Lane, Homestead Lane, Summerset Court, Columbine Avenue, and Pinewood Drive.

This program is not expected to result in any full road closures, but lane closures and local detours will be necessary to complete the work.

All work is part of the 2024 Street Improvement Program (STIP) which aims to improve the average street system Pavement Condition Index (PCI) to above 70 (fair to good condition) by 2024. The plan, which receives its funding from the voter-approved 2014 Ballot Issue 1A sales tax, includes extensive preventative maintenance which will preserve good road conditions throughout the town.

Estes Chamber Inducts New Board Member, Carissa Strieb The Estes Chamber of Commerce replaced a vacant board position this week with Carissa Strieb, owner of Simply Christmas on West Elkhorn Ave. “It became clear to me in my first week that we needed representation on the board from our downtown business community,” Executive Director Donna Carlson said. “The Carissa Strieb first time I called Carissa to introduce myself, her response was, ‘Chamber?

No thanks.’ After we talked for an hour, she told me how delightful it is to hear a new perspective. I wanted her on the board to help us serve other business owners who are feeling frustrated and unheard.”

Carissa has been the owner and operator of Simply Christmas at 129 West Elkhorn since 2014. Her parents purchased the building as The Old Log Cabin restaurant in 1984 and a few

years later turned it into a Christmas store, which also sports a considerable sports fan merchandise section. Carissa was born in Estes Park and has lived here all her life; when her father passed away in 2014, she assumed total control of the store. She’s been very active in the West Elkhorn business community and will provide a much-needed downtown business perspective to our Board.

The position was vacated in May 2020

by Jason Owners, a consultant and founding member who was instrumental to the foundation of the Chamber.

Jason has taken on significant success in his consulting business that requires his attention. He remains a valuable advisor to the Chamber.

Focus On What You Can Control: Trust By: Wendy Koenig, Mayor Estes Park

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the ancient Indian parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant. An oft told and frequently adapted story about six people who’ve never encountered an elephant.

They, unable to see the elephant that stands before them, attempt to discern what it is by using just their hands.

Each, touching a different part of the elephant. Attempting to describe it based on their brief experience.

One person, touching the elephant’s trunk, says, "It’s a big snake." A second, touching the elephant’s ear, says, “No, it’s a fan.” A third, hand on the beast’s leg, says, “No, no it’s the trunk of a tree.”

Another, hand upon its side, says "You are so wrong, it’s a wall." Yet another, hands around its tail, declares it to be a rope. The last person, feeling the hardness and smoothness of the tusk, says it’s a spear.

Realizing the dissimilar accounts of their encounters with the elephant, the people start questioning the truthfulness of the others. Civility falls away.

Transparency no longer matters. Things spiral out of control. The common good becomes an afterthought.

The parable—diverse people experiencing an elephant differently—is rich with insights into human nature. A powerful reminder about the danger of assigning truth based on a narrow and individualistic experience. The risks associated with ignoring the truth of other people who encounter the same thing. The peril of quickly questioning their truthfulness. Not listening, being civil, or seeking common truth. That trust is the key to understanding the

whole.

Drawing from the parable, I’ve come to appreciate how achieving and maintaining the common good of Estes Park requires that every person here, not just the loudest have a voice. That each voice represents a particular point of view.

That all of us trust what a voice says.

Give it value. And in so doing, we acknowledge our individual and collective limitations in fully understanding the realities of each person behind a voice.

In the parable, the distances between the tusk and tail, the ear and leg are far.

Preventing each person from getting a full view of the elephant. But not too far for all of them, if they’d taken time to share their respective truths, listened to and trusted each other, to do so.

Such is the case with the Estes Park’s government. It’s current elephant? The common good of the townspeople in the time of COVID-19.

Touching one part of the commongood-elephant, people call for emergency funding for businesses (e. g.

EVRC). Touching another, they want no restrictions (e. g. face coverings, social distancing). Touching yet another, safety and caution (e. g. following LCHD rules) is what they want.

Unlike the parable, here in Estes the statutory nature of the government prevents things from spiraling out of control. It empowers townspeople to give voice to their pieces of truth. Sets times and places for civil sharing the truths.

And provides transparent processes for the pieces to become a whole. Trust and time are the key. Let’s grow from here.

Touchless Monitored Weed Drop-Off June 27 Now is the time to remove mature weeds that contain seeds that will be next year’s -- and many more years -weeds. The first Monitored Weed Dropoff will be held Saturday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to noon located north of the Waste Management transfer station at 666 Elm Road. Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA) volunteers will be on hand to answer weed questions at-a-distance and direct traffic flow. You will unload your bags into a loader bucket that will deposit them into the dumpster. Bring in your weeds in paper yard bags for free disposal – no slash, pine needles, trash, or dirt. Please remove/shake off dirt from plant roots. Unauthorized dropoffs at this location (with video surveillance) are considered theft of services and are subject to fines. Weeds and trash can be disposed of year- around at the

Estes Park Transfer Station for a fee. No bags of non-weed materials will be accepted at this event. Paper yard bags are available for purchase at local hardware stores. These events are being made possible with the support from Estes Land Stewardship Association, Town of Estes Park, Larimer County, Estes Valley Land Trust, and donations. The 13th Annual Weed Roundup will be held July 25. Additional Monitored Weed Dropoffs in August and September are pending due to funding sources. Larimer County Releases COVID-19 Risk Dashboard Larimer County Public Health is releasing a dashboard to help the community understand risk and COVID-19 data relevant to Larimer County.

The dashboard highlights the early warning indicators that were included in the county suppression plan submitted to the state. These indicators are used by the Health Department to monitor the health of our hospital systems and COVID-19 case data.

The dashboard data will be updated as that data becomes available. Some indicators are updated daily, while hospital data will be updated three times a week.

Larimer County residents have done a great job flattening, however the curve does not go away. Face coverings, social distancing, handwashing, increased testing and close contact follow up all help slow the spread of the virus in the community. Those precautions must continue in order to allow Larimer County to move forward without a surge in cases as restrictions are lifted.

“We have been hearing from our community that people want to be able to see hospital data and understand COVID-19 spread in Larimer County,” says Tom Gonzales, Public Health Director for Larimer County. “We are excited to have worked with our county IT team to provide this needed resource for our residents.”

Trailblazer Broadband Installations Continue With Safety-First Protocol After a brief hiatus at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, in late April Estes Park Power & Communications resumed installations of Trailblazer Broadband, a community-owned and operated high-speed internet service that is delivered over fiber optic cable.

Estes Park Power & Communications customers have been anxiously awaiting the phased construction of Trailblazer Broadband.

The service rollout of the fastest internet available in the Estes Valley has taken place in a few Estes Park neighborhoods, including most of Carriage Hills.

Installations came to a halt for over a month with the developing pandemic.

"We did not see that coming," commented Utilities Director Reuben Bergsten. Trailblazer paused installations because the Town's first priority is the health and safety of its community members, staff, and contractors.

Bergsten noted, "In this time of physical distancing, reliable internet is more important than ever. This slight delay has been frustrating for a few customers, and we understand why." Trailblazer staff quickly worked to develop a new protective installation process to continue to make progress on its critical infrastructure. The new installation protocol includes: A pre-installation phone call to review the homeowners' rights to stop installation at any time if they have concerns All installations can be rescheduled at no charge Installers will wear face coverings at all times and frequently use hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes The installed equipment will be wiped down before the installer leaves Installers will don new shoe covers and

gloves at each home Additionally, both private volunteers and Town employees are making face coverings for the Trailblazer team While the pandemic has slowed the process of installations, the Trailblazer team has revised the construction plan to keep contractors working and installations crews have been increased to help get back on schedule.

"As we all work together to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help our society recover, in health and economy, you can rest assured that Trailblazer Broadband and its employees will continue ahead in our mission to provide you with the fastest and most reliable internet," said Bergsten.

The initial startup utilized Estes Park Power & Communications' smart grid fiber-optic infrastructure, which already exists in specific neighborhoods and is in development in others. Trailblazer Broadband will be available in existing smart grid locations this year and will roll out in surrounding areas over the next three to five years. All residents that participate in the sign-up registry will receive updates specific to their residence or business location. Since reliable internet is more important now than ever, residents living in all "Service Available" areas can take advantage of an extension of the Mountaineer Package, which is the best pricing available for Trailblazer Broadband.

Dr. Catherine Olinger Completes Residency As Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Catherine (Berger Pass) Olinger, 2005 graduate of Estes Park High School, has successfully completed her five year residency at the University of Tennessee Campbell Clinic as an Orthopedic Surgeon. In August 2020, she will start a one year fellowship program at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington where she will specialize in spine surgery.

Catherine, her husband Dr. Chad Olinger, DDS and their son Edward Olinger are excited for their new adventure in Seattle. Catherine is the daughter of Corey and Lori Pass of Estes Park.

Water Enthusiasts Should Always Wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) Now that summer is officially here, Coloradans head to the state’s rivers, lakes and reservoirs to participate in a variety of water sports activities. Colorado Parks and Wildlife remind outdoor recreationists to be safe on the water and wear a life vest, also known as a personal floatation device PFD).

Water sports are a great way to have fun in the sun, whether you go powerboating, paddleboarding, sailboating, windsurfing, kayaking, tubing or canoeing. In order to keep water-based activities carefree and risks at a minimum, it's important to keep basic safety practices in mind.

The spring run-off has filled reservoirs and water is still very cold. If you fall into water that’s barely 50 degrees, hypothermia can set in quickly and be life-threatening. CPW urges all boaters, no matter what type of craft they are using, to wear PFDs when on the water. Regulations

require that the number of PFDs on a boat match the number of people on board. Children 12 years old and younger must always wear a PFD when on the water. The rules apply to all types of boats and stand-up paddleboards.

Outdoor recreationists interested in participating in water sports can rent or loan equipment and PFD are various state parks. CPW offers a park finder tool to search Colorado state parks that offer water activities and rental services. Dogs are encouraged to wear PFD as well in case a boat unexpectedly capsizes.

After I submitted last week’s column for publication, I worried I might have offended the Y chromosome population.

I said they, as a whole, didn’t carry the label-reading gene that is ever so important when grocery shopping. Sure enough, I heard from readers either supporting my theory or defended Y chromosome carriers who read labels when necessary. [My comments are in brackets.]

First, Bill S. said, “I’m a man and a label reader, so there is ONE. Labels everywhere trend toward lower volume/contents/weight yet the product sells for the same price. It’s the same package and look, tricking the non-label-reader.” [We won’t be tricked, will we Bill! After being a fan since 1976, I quit buying Russell Stover candies. I’m no fool.]

Andy’s sister, Jean N. said, “So many people don’t like grocery shopping but I love it! It’s a world of delicious possibilities just waiting for us!” [As I mentioned in an earlier column, Jean and Andy’s mother—my Aunt Betty—was a food editor for the Chicago Tribune. Of course they like getting the groceries— they were born into it.]

Barb M. commented, “I too love to go grocery shopping, but haven't been since February!! [Husband] Sam goes every week for us and ONLY buys what's on the list! Ugh!! No surprises! But no temptations either.” [Thank you Sam, for helping keep Barb healthy. ] Beth S. is “helped” by her husband too.

[Chalk up another one for the male gender. ] I give him a list and he always adds little surprises that he finds. ” [Two stars for Clyde for adding a dash of romance to his grocery shopping! ] Jacque R. reminded me that not all women are shoppers: “I smile and nod in agreement every time I read your column, EXCEPT I HATE GROCERY SHOPPING, not only labels but all variations on the theme!” [Hopefully Jacque has a husband like Barb’s, Beth’s and Fran’s. Maybe he does the cooking too!]

After I mentioned that my brother-inlaw accidentally bought cottage cheese with chives, Richard L. said, “I have to

admit I have inadvertently bought the chive infested cream cheese in the past. I am a little more careful with peanut butter though—believe it or not there is a brand named “Crazy Richard’s.” [one ingredient: peanuts.] Now once in a while I don't read the label and get the crunchy rather than creamy. This shopping thing is not for the faint of heart.”

And from Dave M., I heard this: “I must question your theory that grocery label-reading is caused by two X chromosomes. I wholeheartedly agree it IS correlated with two X chromosomes and that I, a holder of a Y chromosome, find it a tribulation. But is there causality?

Dave continued: “Ever look at the label on a bag of original Fritos? Most people expect old school junk food like Fritos to contain a long list of chemicals. Nope.

Three ingredients: corn, corn oil, and salt. If you want to chip binge and feel less guilty about it Fritos are the ticket.”

[Of course I knew this. I’m a labelreader! ] This got me thinking: what other foods are on the grocery shelves consisting of three ingredients or less? Aha! There’s: • Daisy sour cream (it was three-ingredient Daisy cottage cheese I mentioned in last week’s column), • Quaker oatmeal, • Ghirardelli unsweetened cocoa (with no mono and diglycerides), • Martinelli apple juice (truly, 100 percent apple juice!), • 100% maple syrup (it doesn’t matter which brand. If you don’t see “100%” on the label, don’t buy it, because it’s corn syrup, not maple syrup).

• Chobani, Dannon or Fage plain yogurt (thank you, Kathleen K., for showing me that it’s ok to eat plain yogurt, a learned behavior for sure), • some Lara Bars (these are great on a hike), • Ortega black beans (no preservatives), and • Planter’s Harvest almonds (you don’t need to buy nuts roasted in other oils.

Nuts have their own, delicious, natural— and healthy—oils.)

Wine and vinegar are also good bets for being made with three or fewer ingredients. Which, in a roundabout way, brings us back to Dave M., who said, “Sitting here studying the label on my Budweiser, it lists only hops, rice and barley malt.” Who could ask for anything more?

Estes Transit (Free Shuttles) To Begin Daily Service July 1 On Wednesday, July 1, Estes Transit will begin daily service to 52 stops throughout Estes Park.

A number of service improvements will be implemented this summer, most notably that all five routes (Red, Gold, Blue, Brown and Green) will originate from the northwest corner of the Parking Structure located at 691 N. St. Vrain/U. S. Hwy. 36 (rather than the Estes Park Visitor Center). Additionally, a new “Express” Route has been added to better serve the large parking areas at the Parking Structure and Events Complex.

2020 Estes Transit service highlights include: • Daily service will run from July 1 through October 4, 2020.

• The Red (Downtown Trolley), Blue, Gold and Brown Routes all begin daily service at 10 a.m. with the final trip for all routes (except Red) beginning at 6:30 p.m.

• The Red Route will serve extended evening hours in 2020 to better accommodate downtown employees and visitors wishing to park at the Parking Structure, with the final trip beginning at 10:30 p.m.

• The new Green (Express) Route will serve weekends only (Saturday and Sunday) from Noon to 6 p.m. each day.

• For those who need a little extra help (seniors and persons with disabilities), “door to door” service can be requested for stops within ¾ mile of an existing Estes Transit stop. Rides can be requested 24 hours before the trip or scheduled up to seven days in advance.

• In an effort to ensure a safe and healthy experience while aboard an Estes Transit vehicle, staff have implemented a number of precautionary measures aimed at protecting the health and safety of both our patrons and drivers. The

Town's contracted service provider (Rocky Mountain Transit Management, Inc.) has developed COVID-19 Safety Protocols detailing the precautions that will be taken during the 2020 service season. Please note that facial coverings (masks) will be required on all Estes Transit buses.

Village Thrift Shop ‌. Closed Through At Least Labor Day Weekend Village Thrift Shop, Inc. (VTS) suspended resale and donation operations on March 14, 2020 and will continue to be closed through at least the Labor Day weekend due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The VTS Board of Directors has determined that the safety, health and well being of the entire volunteer staff, cooperators, donors and customers should not be put at risk needlessly as the business, while effective, beneficial and successful, is neither essential nor necessary. However, as conditions improve and allow, the Village Thrift Shop will reopen when deemed safe to do so.

COVID-19 is known to be particularly serious, and at times, lethal for older individuals if infected. Of the 12,000 staff hours donated last year, nearly all were given freely by volunteers in this same vulnerable age class. As summer residents return to the Valley and the recurring seasonal influx of visitors from states with upward trending infection rates and from around the world, the avenues for direct viral transmission increases accordingly as well as the potential for spread through handling of donations, transactions, disposal and recycling.

Additionally, the majority of donated textile goods, e.g. clothes, shoes, hats, belts and the like, do not make it to the VTS floor for resale for a number of defined reasons. Alternatively, they are sorted, separated and transported away

in a large panel truck by an offsite textile recycler on a weekly basis. That recycler suspended operations at the same time VTS closed in March and has not resumed, and is not likely to restart operations in Estes Park. This accounts for a great deal of product needing disposition other than landfill disposal.

VTS is a non-profit, all volunteer retail outlet that generates revenue through the resale of donated goods. In turn, after satisfying direct operating expenses, all remaining funds are dedicated to supporting other qualified non-profits serving the Estes Valley through an annual grant system. Since opening in 2016, in excess of $641,800 has been distributed to other non-profits. Additionally, last fiscal year, VTS provided nearly $1,000 in goods for individuals needing material assistance as screened by cooperating non-profits. The Board of Directors and the volunteers at the Village Thrift Shop will safely continue this mission in the future and appreciates our donors and customers understanding and support until that time.

It’s the final frontier.

We are, of course, talking about our garage and its current state of disarray.

The space designed to comfortably house two of our three vehicles is doing everything but providing them a safe haven and it’s simply gotten worse the past few weeks. A cliché that could be considered completely appropriate in this case is “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Our garage couldn’t get much messier.

When the world shut down in March, I made a list of things that needed to be accomplished while we were sequestered during the “Stay-at-Home” period. To be honest, my husband and I managed to cross many of them off as the days and weeks went by. But the one that continues to haunt us is that dang garage.

We have friends who have immaculate garages with carefully arranged shelves, clean floors, and absolutely nothing out of place. You have no idea how much I admire those people. Their efforts prove to me that a carefully maintained storage space is actually possible. Unfortunately, both due to the nature of my husband’s business (commercial refrigeration and residential HVAC) and our tendency to not throw anything away— after all, you never know when you might need that thing you haven’t touched in seven years—we may never have that perfect garage.

The only encouragement I’ve received recently has been the realization that it could be worse. When venturing out into the big, scary world, I’ve noticed a few open garages that are literally stacked with boxes from floor to ceiling.

I’m not sure how the homeowners even navigate inside or find what they might be looking for.

But that’s no excuse for us, and this week I plan to begin in earnest to sort boxes, rehome when warranted, and toss away items that should have gone away long, long ago. In the meantime, my car sits wistfully in the driveway, dreaming of the old days when it was safely tucked inside.

As I stand staring at the disaster inside our garage, I can’t help but shake my head. I mean, how many motorcycle helmets do we really need? What about the tailgating gas grill that rests on top of the vintage Hammond B-3 organ which sits next to an upright freezer and two backup refrigerators? There are multiple unopened boxes of covers for the VegTrug raised beds in our garden, huge boxes of furnace filters, tanks of refrigerant, an abandoned office chair, a perfectly good front-loading dryer with a pedestal base that we can’t seem to

find a home for, and of course there’s our sevenfoot Christmas tree standing tall in its canvas case. Joel’s Harley is on one side of the garage next to the lawn tractor and the treadmill he just had to have. But why is there a huge bag of dusty red Solo cups sitting on a pile of tarps? The list goes on and on.

If we had display tables, I’d suggest a garage sale, but endeavors of that nature require way too much work. And is it really worth it when you’re forced to dicker with people over a nickel or a quarter? I think not.

The situation was exacerbated when we began staining the deck. That meant the power washer that hadn’t seen the light of day in years, would need to be pulled out from behind everything heaped on the floor in front of it. Then, we had to move furniture from the deck inside so we could actually stain the weathered planks. That’s when my car was exiled to the great outdoors.

And guess what? Now that the world is trying to regain some sense of normalcy and Joel is happily doing service calls again—he has no time to finish the half-done project. But I like that kind of work, so I’ll put on my paint clothes and in the words of Larry the Cable Guy—let’s just “git ’er done.”

While the stain is drying, there will be time to pull down all of the dust-covered boxes to discover what’s hidden inside. Remember the Big Elk Fire back in 2002? Our street was on standby for evacuation—we were next on the list.

So, Joel and I packed boxes of the things we felt were most valuable and essential should we need to leave at a moment’s notice. Every now and then when we’re looking for something else, we’ll come across one of those boxes on a shelf. I guess what was stashed away inside wasn’t so necessary after all.

That’s just one example how we put value on possessions that in reality we could actually live without.

So, wish us luck. Maybe one day our garage’s overhead door will be open, and someone will drive by in awe at the cleanliness they see inside. I dream of having a garage that looks exactly like one of those pictured in a Griots auto supply catalog. You know that old saying: “A place for everything and everything in its place.” It’s a worthy goal, but you know what? I’m not holding my breath. I do have a question, however: Does anyone out there need a free Kenmore dryer?

New “Beat On The Street” Concerts

will begin this Friday, June 26th around 4:00 p.m.

The performers will be moving

through downtown Estes Park on a flatbed trailer carrying group members, Chuck & Julie Varilek, Charles & Julie Phares, Jan McCown, Barb Barleen & Michael J. Arnott & Nicolette Miner singing songs such as, “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” “Big Spender,” “YMCA” and “God Bless The USA.” Special guest appearances by “Sonny & Cher” singing “I Got You Babe” and “The Mamas and The Papas” singing “California Dreamin” complete

with wigs and costumes!

In summer of 2018, we launched a great new tradition, Bike Estes Day, which included setting up a station for the Colorado Bike to Work Day in the morning and coordinating a Costume Bike Parade and Party in the evening.

This year, Colorado Bike to Work Day has been postponed to September 22 due to Covid-19 precautions. The Estes Park Cycling Coalition plans on setting up a Bike to Work Day event on that day, so please stay tuned for details. The Bike Parade and Party will be cancelled for 2020.

All Those Weeds!

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!”

This is quite true when it comes to weeds, as a plant that is “out of place” can influence greatly how we react to it.

Most weed scientists (yes, there is such a specialty in agriculture) agree that weed seed production and seed dormancy are of paramount importance. We will come back to that thought later. The ability for weed seeds to survive in the soil until conditions are favorable for germination (seed dormancy) is a major concern in agronomic weed control.

Let’s extend that thought a bit further by including garden and small acreages.

There are some considerations that you may need to address before you decide to take action on weeds. Let's start with your level of acceptance for a plant that is not preferred for a certain area. Can you tolerate a few dandelions in the lawn or garden? What about the idea that the plant can be harmful to pets, livestock or humans? You might need to consider how prevalent the weedy plant is. A few pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) may be one thing, while many leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) may be quite another.

Additional thoughts may include the area involved. To some, a small garden or lawn area could be just as big of concern as a pasture or rangelands. Regardless, weeds are great at not discriminating based on size of a plot of land.

A more difficult issue to deal with (but no less important) is whether the plants you are investigating have annual or perennial life-cycles. All annual plants live just one year, whereas perennials live several years or indefinitely. Annuals are notorious for prolific and early seed production. Flowering and subsequent seed production is their sole source of reproduction. The soil can be a major reservoir of seed for years (remember that we discussed this issue earlier in the article).

It will be difficult to know whether you have a perennial or annuals plant unless you can see the rooting structure.

Perennial plants can reproduce both by seed and vegetative or underground structures (like rhizomes, runners, etc.).

Be vigilant in not introducing weed seed to your growing area. Try purchasing certified weed-free seed (turf or wildflower seed), weed-free potting mixes (composted or not), and weed-free straw for gardens.

Also, when feeding or bedding large and small animals, think of hay or alfalfa sources that are weed seed free.

Basic weed control advice, regardless of the situation (garden plot, lawn/turf or small acreage) is competition—it’s an excellent way to suppress or prevent weeds. Good fertility is important for the desired plant(s). Soil disturbances are not desirable and can expose seeds in the soil-bank to conditions ideal for germination. Avoid bare or exposed ground by establishing a desired cover-crop or use wood mulch. These procedures will help prevent soil erosion and keep undesired plants at bay. Proper aeration or mulching promotes good growing conditions for your desired plants and aids in your ability to prevent un-healthy pests or disease. And, least we should forget, the adage of “right place, right plant.” This saying might be the most important thing to remember in your gardening or landscaping decisions.

When a fire incinerated every word she had ever written and all her possessions—expect for her beloved dog Elvis, her truck, and a few singed artifacts—Karen embarked on a heroic journey to reconcile her desire to be alone with her need for community.

Those events are the basis for the memoir “Rough Beauty: forty seasons of mountain living” by Karen Auvinen. The Estes Valley Library is hosting a live virtual presentation with author Karen Auvinen on Thursday, July 9 at 7 p. m. Our Wonderful World: A 4-Part Video Series On Uzbekistan

The Estes Valley Library is hosting an online “Our Wonderful World” special series with Estes Park resident and global traveler Kathy Delker, exploring the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan.

It is a country with an extraordinary history and culture, featuring buildings with exceptional architectural patterns and cities with colorful bazaars filled with rare spices and unique arts.

The four-part is now available to view online at any time. Each episode is available on the library’s YouTube page (simply look for the YouTube icon on the home screen at estesvalleylibrary.org).

Episode One begins with Uzbekistan’s monumental colorfully-tiled buildings.

Episode Two explores the daily life of the

people. Episode Three focuses on the famous Turco-Mongol leader Timur (1336-1405). The concluding episode features demonstrations of outdoor bread-baking, the manufacture of silk ikat fabric, and the making of paper from mulberry trees.

The host for each series is global traveler Kathy Delker.

Kathy is a native of central Kansas who made her first trip overseas as a college student participating in a summer language institute in northern Germany.

That experience inspired a passion for traveling, not only overseas but throughout the U. S. She spent most of her career working as a reference and research librarian in university libraries located in Tennessee, Ohio, Kansas City, and Wichita. Now retired, Kathy moved to Estes Park in July of 2019.

Library Now Open With Special Hours; Curbside Continues The Estes Valley Library is currently open with limited hours, and with curbside and virtual services continuing. The library building is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed on Saturdays and Sundays for now.

Curbside service is also available, with appointment times offered Mondays through Fridays from 2 to 5 p.m.

All library collections are accessible for browsing, with self-check-out stations open. In addition, there are five timelimited public computers available with Internet and email access. The second floor remains closed for now, along with public meeting rooms and the Makerspace.

For those entering the library building, masks and face coverings are required, in accordance with current health orders and recommendations. Exceptions are for children under two and anyone for whom a mask would cause impairment

to a current health condition.

The library is open at 50% of normal occupancy. Staff members are greeting visitors upon arrival and keeping a tally on numbers. Waiting times are possible, and staff will guide and assist if there is a queue of people. While there are no time limits, the library recommends visits of 45 minutes or less. Seating inside the library is limited at this time.

Outdoor Wi-Fi remains available 24/7.

Downtown Wi-Fi spans the library parking lot and all of Bond Park.

Beginning July 1, due dates will resume, although the library remains finefree. Returned items may either be brought inside to the the library lobby, or deposited in the drive-through bookdrops in front of the library, which are open 24/7 for easy no-touch returns.

Childcare Leader Rides Off Into The Sunrise this town to accomplishing EVICS mission, if at all?

While we have not been able to impact capacity (unfortunately), great strides have been made. The Childcare Scholarship Program has been a huge success, and has provided access to childcare for over 425 children since we started.

Provider support has also been significant. Prior to EVICS, there was no program that supported childcare providers with training, networking, and resources. I feel this has been really im-

The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPRNC) supports all nonprofits in Estes Park. Big, small, moving and shaking, or holding steady. We often have the honor of working with agents of change. Nancy Almond has been the Executive Director at Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) since 2006. She completes her almost 15 years of service to families and youth in our community this week. She is passing her rainbow sparkle baton to Chris Douglas. This milestone is an opportunity to take a snapshot of childcare (and how it has changed) in Estes Valley.

What were the biggest issues you walked into?

EVICS was a brand-new start-up organization. I was the only staff member, and I had to figure out what we were about, what we were going to do and how we were going to do it!

What did you think would be quickly resolved that turned out to be a struggle?

I really thought we could address the childcare capacity issue, and create more childcare slots. It proved to be a more difficult issue than I anticipated.

Why is it so difficult?

Part of the barrier is childcare licensing, but also, childcare is not a glamorous or high paying job, and it is difficult to recruit people into it.

Ironically, it is one of the most important services a community can provide, and we must figure out how to value and reward those who have the skills and gifts of working with young children.

The early years are critical and early experiences set the trajectory for success. Today’s children are our future teachers, medical providers, computer analysts, builders, and leaders. Their possibilities are limitless and their success impacts all of us. We must get our heads around this and act accordingly. (OK, end of soapbox!)

I’m looking forward to more time to pursue the outdoor activities I love – hiking, biking, skiing, working in the yard, etc. Also hoping to get through a large stack of books that have been collecting dust! And, I am not finished with my work in the community yet, and I look forward to being involved in other ways.

What issues are personal for you?

I will always be an advocate for children. I look forward to continuing my involvement with the Family Advisory Board, and being able to impact childcare and family challenges from a different perspective. I’ve also learned so much about non-profit work and fund development. I look forward to using those skills to possibly help others.

AND THEY HAD COMPASSION One of the most widely read spiritual authors, Max Lucado, told it like it is for many people: “Your eyes know no tears, your heart no compassion. But you’ll go to church, when church-goings in fashion. Just give me a tear, a heart ready to mold, and I’ll give you a mission, a message so bold, that a fire will be stirred where there was only death, and your heart will be flamed by my life and my breath.”

A business man and his wife needed a break and booked a few days stay in an ocean front hotel. He got up early after a storm hammered the area the night before and began to walk along the beach to see what damage might have been done. As he strolled, he noticed the large number of starfish that had been thrown ashore by the waves and were lying helpless on the beach. He knew that once the morning sun had burned through the clouds, the starfish would dry up and die. Suddenly the man saw an interesting sight. A young boy had also noticed the plight of the starfish and was picking them up and hurriedly throwing them back into the ocean. “Why are you doing that?” the man asked the boy as he approached. “Can’t you see that one person will never make a difference? You’ll never be able to get all those starfish back into the water.

There are too many.” “Yes, that’s true," the boy sighed as he bent over and picked up another and threw it back into the water. Then, as he watched it sink beneath the waves, he looked at the man and smiled, and said, “But it sure made a difference to that one!”

Steven Covey tells of his experience on a New York subway. As people sat quietly waiting for the car to move, a man got on with two noisy and rambunctious children. He sat down and closed his eyes as if oblivious to the noise made by his rowdy children. The quiet subway car soon became a scene of chaos. Covey said he finally confronted the father about his children’s behavior. The man opened his eyes and assessed the problem. “Oh, you’re right. I guess I should do something about it. We just came from the hospital. Their mother died there an hour ago. I’m just trying to process that and I guess they don’t know how to handle it either.” The attitude of the entire group changed as people came to see what they could do to help…babysit the kids, comfort the dad.

While walking home from school, a boy named Mark noticed that a boy ahead of him had stumbled and fallen, dropping everything he was carrying. Mark hurried to his side and helped him retrieve his belongings. The hefty load the boy was carrying included a baseball bat and glove, a couple of sweaters, a small tape recorder, and an armful of books. He helped him carry his things home and his new friend, Bill, was appreciative. During the walk, Mark learned that Bill was struggling in school and had just broken up with his girlfriend. When they arrived at Bill’s house, he invited Mark in for a Coke and they spent the afternoon talking, laughing and watching TV. From that time on, through junior and high school, they kept in touch with each other. Finally, the time came for graduation. Just before the time came for them to ‘walk’, Bill sought Mark out and asked him if he remembered the day that they first met. Mark smiled and nodded. Bill asked, “Did you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things that day?” Without waiting for Mark’s reply, he explained that he had cleaned out his locker and was going home to end his life. He had been storing away sleeping pills and was headed home to end it all, when Mark, through his simple acts of compassion, inspired him to go on living. “Mark, when you picked up my books that day, you saved my life,” “You can’t save them all! You can’t make a real difference!” But you can make a difference for ‘that one’…with that one kind gesture, that one act of compassion, that enables and inspires a starfish, a father, a struggling student, to continue on.

So, I have a confession, I haven’t been exercising during all of this stay-at-home and safer-at-home orders. Why? I fell out of the habit and I am just at work and home, so what is the point? There is too much to worry about and my favorite places to work out have been closed as well. Feel familiar to you? Well, I should be out exercising and keeping my body healthy. Lately I am feeling the decline in my fitness. So, why do I share this? I am concerned about your hearing fitness!

Recently, I have spoken with my colleagues and we are finding that people feel the same with their hearing and hearing aids. “I am just at home so why should I wear my hearing aids?” I have heard it here in my office during these past weeks and I am worried about hearing fitness. When the ears and brain aren’t getting good sound, just like me not exercising, their “fitness” goes down.

Let me explain with an analogy.

Let’s say you sign up to run in the Boston Marathon. Prior to the race you take a few walks and maybe a few runs

However, if you were to train daily with running and fitness workouts you would most likely do much better. For your body and mind, race day is simply another day of running and you are prepared.

The same is true with your hearing! If you wear your hearing aids on a daily basis and head into an important meeting or party, your ears have been prepared to listen and hear. If you are putting on your hearing aids as you are walking into the room, the results may not be as good. Even in quiet and when you are alone, there are sounds that your ears need to stay fit. Underlying and untreated hearing loss can lead to the same results. If you feel you are struggling, it is time to get things checked out. Hearing fitness is just as important as your physical fitness. So, as we are at home and distant more often, remember to keep your body and ears active to be ready for the races ahead.

Yellow-bellied marmots are herbivores, with a diet consisting entirely of plants.

This week’s featured animal is the yellow-bellied marmot.

A cousin of the well-known groundhog, the yellow-bellied marmot can frequently be found in the high tundra of Rocky Mountain National Park. Look for them sunning themselves on the rocks along Trail Ridge Road. Their numbers seem to be rising in Estes Park as well where they live in the rock outcroppings found throughout town.

CPW Warns Public Of Elk And Moose Aggressively Defending Their Young Since late May, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials have investigated several elk and moose conflicts resulting in injuries to both people and dogs, and agency officials are cautioning everyone to be extra vigilant this time of year.

Because elk, deer, moose and other wild animals are currently rearing their newborn offspring, it increases the possibility of a serious wildlife encounter.

I first met Enda Mills Kiley when we visited the Enos Mills cabin during the early 1990s. My mother, who lived in Lyons, loved to visit with Enda, and suggested we go meet her. Enda's namesake was the author, Edna Ferber, who spent several summers at the Longs Peak Inn. Thanks to the person who recorded her birth certificate, her name was misspelled, making it as unique as she was.

Although Enda was only three-yearsold when her father died, she was so proud of him. In one of her letters she

asked me to send her a list of the Enos Mills books I have, and corrected me when I put Enos Mills of the Rockies on the list, telling me it was written in 1935

by Hildegarde Hawthorne and Esther Burnell Mills, not Enos.

She also loved to talk about her mother, Esther Burnell Mills.

She was delighted when I told her that my favorite Christmas story, and in fact the one I read every Christmas, is the one about the famous Christmas picnic Esther shared with Katherine Garretson.

They were both homesteaders, and they had planned to meet each other for a Christmas picnic near Lily Lake. Katherine wasn’t sure Esther would come, thinking someone in Estes

Park would have extended her a better invitation for Christmas dinner, but she did indeed come. The two friends shared canned soup, bacon, bread and coffee.

Their visit was a short one, however, and they snowshoed home so they could be home before dark. Enda loved that I loved that story.

She enjoyed telling the story about how hard her mother worked to keep the Longs Peak Inn after her father died. I was always asking her to talk about herself but she preferred to tell the story of her father, and reminded us that he was first and foremost a nature guide.

She sent me a list of quotes from Enos Mills. One of my favorites is this: “When my father created nature guiding he said, ‘A wilderness became a wonderland with a nature guide.’ He trained them, both men and women, to be ‘more inspirational than informational.’” Enda was always inspirational to me and so many others.

At the time of her death in 1993 at age 90, Dorothy Carnine Scott was a wellknown artist in Estes Park. Her late hus-

band, Dr. Ewing C. Scott, was the eldest son of Hon. Charles F. Scott, who had built the summer cabin known as the Scottage in Moraine Park in 1899. Ewing & Dorothy had spent their honeymoon there in 1926. Dorothy had been an artist from the time she could first hold a crayon; traveling with her husband she had one-man shows in Rio de Janeiro, Taipei, and Tokyo, in addition to several places in the U.S. The Scottage was their summer home. When it became too crowded with cousins, they bought land on Devil's Gulch, bought an old cabin from the Park, and added a wing with a studio for Dorothy; this was in 1958. She called it the Owls' Nest, since it was directly across the road from Lumpy Ridge and the Twin Owls. After Ewing's death in 1965 she lived there year-round until she couldn't stand the winter winds. She bought a mobile home south of Tucson; one of her oil paintings of the Tucson desert she titled "My Second Home." But she still loved Estes Park best, supported the Art Center from its earliest days, and kept the Owls' Nest open from October to students, customers, and all her many friends.

As early as 1911, Edith Moore traveled to Estes Park with her father, Lew, to sell and lease saddle horses to the ranches

and stables. In 1925, following graduation from Denver Opportunity School with secretarial and bookkeeping skills, she came to Estes to celebrate her independence with a few friends. They stayed at the Lewiston Hotel and during her stay was hired to be their bookkeeper for the next summer. She then became assistant cashier at Colorado National Bank in Denver for the winters and lived in Estes Park in the summer where she made many friends and was involved in the Women’s Club and a reader’s theater group. As a patron of Dave Stirling she helped to have his artwork featured in galleries in Denver and throughout the southwest. Having been raised on a ranch, “cowboy girl” Edith saved on gasoline while in Estes Park by “borrowing” a horse from Silver Lane Stables. She also worked behind the scenes at the Estes Rodeo. In 1938 Edith married Jack Murtaugh and became a navy wife in California. Jack died in the war and when my Aunt Edith came home, the Lewiston had burned down and her job in Estes was gone. She stayed in Denver as the Mayor’s Executive Secretary and only visited Estes periodically after that.

News From The Art Center Of Estes Park Opening June 26th – “Jewel Tones and Gem Stones” featuring Diana Wade and Alice League This week, let’s introduce Alice League.

Alice League takes cut and polished semi-precious stones and designs settings of gold and silver for them, creating unique pieces of jewelry. An artist who chooses wire as a medium is destined to have an interesting relationship with it. Its pliability and endless experimental possibilities often result in wire becoming greater than itself, and what began as a mere 12 inches of gold or silver wire ends as a dynamic frame enhancing the gem it encircles.

Alice’s background is in administration and over 50 years her ‘day job’ focused on working with people. With so much time spent organizing people, community projects and writing grants, there was limited time available to develop her creative side. Following graduation from Anderson University with a social work and psychology degree, she began a career in administration. She served in Kansas as a college and hospital food service director, in North Dakota as Community Action Program Director and finally as the Director of the Dakota Dinosaur Museum. This museum, created by she and her husband Larry, to display their extensive collection of rocks, minerals, fossils, mammals and dinosaur bones, opened in 1994. The Leagues purchased their home in Estes Park in 1995 and were winter residents for the next 20 year. The returned to Dickinson to operate the museum during the summer months and permanently retired in 2015.

She began her journey as a jewelry artist by taking a class in wire wrapping at the Art Center in 1998. Thus making a piece of wearable art from a several pieces of wire and a mineral cabochon, she began to produce a variety of mineral and fossil pendants, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. As she and her husband attended gem and mineral shows in Denver and Tucson to purchase items for their gift shop, she began to search for the best gemstone cabochons to pursue her jewelry business. Having a pendant made of the same mineral in the museum exhibit was a great way for the museum visitor to take home a memory of the museum. It was often difficult to decide which ones to purchase. So I purchased far more than I could wrap each year. Thus, my collection of cabochons ready to wrap fills several boxes as well as beads galore.

Alice uses 14/20 gold filled or sterling silver square wire for her pendant creations. Wire is so versatile that you are not limited to set sizes, shapes, or materials. She likes to let the natural cabochon or bead govern the wrap and not let the wire overpower the stone or become the center of interest. Depending on the size and shape of the cabochon, she never knows exactly how the pendant will look until it is completed. The detail of the markings on each mineral or gem dictates the curve or bend of the wire. No two pieces are alike. She loves to attend gem and mineral shows to find that unique mineral piece or natural bead that has a different shape. Alice says, “While making my jewelry, the excitement and interest is in trying something new and different each time.”

Alice’s creations as an Art Center juried artist were first on exhibit starting in

2005. Her work is also for sale at the Village Store in Estes Park. The Art Center “Lines into Shapes” juried art show accepted her work from 2007 through 2017. She was honored to receive the 1st place jewelry award for the “Lines into Shapes” show in 2009 and again in 2017.

Alice’s jewel tone pieces add sparkle to this abstract show.

In addition to being an artist member, Alice has served as the board treasurer for the Art Center board of directors for close to 20 years. Moreover, for the past six years, she has served as the agency volunteer accountant.

Also on display in the gallery will be the outstanding work of the other Art Center artist members, including other works in oil painting, watercolor, pastel, jewelry, ceramics, charcoal, graphite, glass, wood, sculpture, fiber, photography, printmaking and mixed media.

Update From Crossroads Ministry A few weeks ago a thank you card came in the mail addressed to the Crossroads team. When I think of the word TEAM, I envision a field of soccer players coordinating their efforts to move the ball down the field towards the goal. The one that scores the goal generally gets the applause, but at the end of the game it’s the whole team that celebrates the victory.

We have a host of superstars represented within our staff of paid employees and volunteers. It’s through their coordinated efforts that we’re able to efficiently distribute resources to meet the needs in our town. Some of them are on the front lines, but many of them serve behind the scenes without much recognition. The world is changing. Some for the better, some for the worse, but it is changing. This has happened before and will probably happen again, although maybe not again in my lifetime. The interesting aspect is that we are resetting in multiple ways at once. Obviously, there is an economic reset, but there is also a social reset. Both were initially caused by the ongoing corona virus, but are now complicated by the current demands of a frustrated people looking for answers to bigotry and prejudice. There is also a technological reset, spurred by the social reset, which also contributes to the economic reset. And, perhaps, if we are smart or lucky, we will see an ecological reset as well.

Certainly, there was a visible clearing of the skies over most every megalopolis.

This benefit came from the “Stay at Home” orders caused by the virus. However, China’s skies are back to “normal” and, with factories attempting catch-up, some say even worse than prior to the onset of COVID-19. As the USA reopens, will we see New York City (who experienced a 50% drop in carbon monoxide!), Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Denver and other major hubs of industry and population return to the dense clouds that hide the heavens and make breathing a challenge? Many believe this is likely.

Massive layoffs are freeing young metropolitan families to move farther than the suburbs, often traveling across the country to join their parents in multigenerational homes reminiscent of the 1930s (Great Depression) and 1940s (World War II). (Bonus: families are bonding through generations often relatively unacquainted in recent years.) Interest rates, on both mortgage and bank account, are nearly non-existent. (Will

retirees return to larger homes to accommodate grandkids?) Public food pantries are struggling. Parts of the country, in order to minimize homelessness, have resorted to laws that prevent foreclosure and eviction. On top of this, it seems to me that people are increasingly defensive, looking to self-preservation as they have less and less resources at hand.

The attraction of the classy restaurants, professional theatre, and the extensive nightlife has been overshadowed by pollution levels that trash the lungs and increase susceptibility to health problems.

This is causing a serious look at long range answers. Companies, governments, and financiers are seriously considering industries and activities that will support sustainable urban development, such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, trees, victory gardens, and even working from home, sometimes far from the office.

The pollution is not contained to the cities. Estes is better than Denver, but pollution of air, water and land exists even here in the Estes Valley. The US has minimized (not eliminated) fluorocarbons, but the human race has become accepting of breathing carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and, in some cases, even high levels of sulfur dioxide. We have also learned, the hard way, that plastic never really dematerializes. Itty, bitty microplastics, too small to see have infiltrated our priceless planet, which is capable (still) of providing food, water, and breathable air. Pollution: we eat it, we drink it, and we breathe it. It continues to worsen. …

Will we do something? Or will we simply adjust to new acceptances?

The Quakers/Unitarians have graciously invited Jyoti and Yusef, our experienced leaders to join the Zoom meeting for all interested people to join the program virtually. They will begin the program with an invocation and then teach “Those who love, loving show forth radiance...”, which was sung by Jyoti’s daughter when she was two years

old. They will continue with dances from other cultures and include a time for questions and discussion.

Sign Up For Nan Ryan Invitational Golf Tournament

It’s sign-up time for the 17th Annual Nan Ryan Invitational Golf Tournament, which benefits the Estes Park Junior Golf Program. Golfers of all ages are invited to participate.

Because of COVID-19, this year participants will make up their own foursome or threesome and may play their 9-hole scramble round any day between Sunday, July 19 and Saturday, July 25, at the Lake Estes Golf Course.

“The Nan Ryan Invitational helps remove financial barriers that may prevent some young people from getting started in golf,” said Austin Logan, Golf Operations Manager. “I was one of those juniors that benefitted from our outstanding golf community. Golf is a great game and should be a privilege offered to all young people, and the Nan Ryan tournament promotes that idea.”

Junior golfers will again be the big winners, as all proceeds from the tournament go to the Estes Park Junior Golf Program. Last year’s tournament raised a record $5,120, bringing the total raised

for the Program to $39,231. The money is used to buy equipment and assist with scholarships for those who need financial assistance. “We hope to exceed that amount this year,” stated Ryan.

Entry fee is $25 for passholders and $40 for non-passholders, and includes 9 holes of golf, a $20 Gift Card for each player for the new The Dunraven Inn, prizes for winning teams in five divisions (Mens, Womens, Mixed, Junior and All-Junior) and for special events, and a special gift for each player. Any player 17 or under is considered a junior.

In answer to many requests, this year Men Under 75 and Junior Boys 11-17 will hit from the white tees, Women Under 75, Men 75 and Over, Junior Girls 11-17 and Junior Boys 10 and Under will hit from the Red tees, and Women 75 and Over and Junior Girls 10 and Under will hit from the Yellow tees.

There is no entry fee for any Junior Golfer (17 and under). “We encourage all juniors to enter the tournament this year,” stated Nan Ryan, Tournament Organizer. “They will receive the same benefits as those paying an entry fee.”

Golf carts will be available at the 9hole course, and can be rented at the Pro Shop for $10 per person for 9 holes.

Property Rights: Urgent Call For Volunteers To The Editor: Earlier this year, the old Town Board decided to end the 25 years of cooperation with the County on this valley’s land use system that regulates your property rights. So, now we have separate such systems for property owners in Town vs. those in the larger unincorporated area outside of Town limits. This means separate Planning Commissions and that the existing County Planning Commission in Fort Collins (with limited understanding of the Estes area) now handles all zoning issues, planning regulations and development projects for our valley outside of Town.

To facilitate better valley representation on these matters the County Commissioners are trying to establish a new Estes Valley Planning Advisory Committee to assist the County Planning Commission. I understand this new Committee will be seven volunteer members appointed by County Com-

missioners, and in the interest of renewed town cooperation, two of these members can live in town limits.

While applications for this new committee are open and available until the end of this month on the Larimer County website for “Boards and Commissions�, there are only two applicants at the moment. So, the commissioners may conclude that without more citizen interest, this new committee is not needed. If you have an interest in understanding and protecting your property rights and in controlling land use in your community, please consider participating on this new committee.

William “Bill” Frederic Allnutt Family patriarch, community leader, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, William “Bill” Frederic Allnutt, 89 of Greeley, passed away at his home on June 22, 2020.

Bill was born on July 1, 1930 in Greeley to John Wolfenden and Katherine Mae (Samuelson) Allnutt.

Bill grew up in Greeley a nd explored the surrounding countryside, all of which is now developed.

Except for 10 summers on his uncle’s ranch in Yampa and military service, he spent his whole life in Greeley. He graduated from Greeley High School in 1948, where he served as the president of his senior class. He went on to graduate from the University of Colorado in 1952 where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Through work, community service and family, Bill met and remembered many people in life and had sharp recall but had his senior moments towards the end, as most do.

It was in Minneapolis, June 1954 that Bill met his bride to be, Dolores “Dee” McDonald, on a blind date. Six weeks later, he left for his Air Force assignment in Fairbanks, Alaska. Occasional letters and telephone calls kept the two in touch, with Bill returning to Minneapolis in May, two years later, to continue their courtship. On June 23, 1956 they were married in Detroit and moved to Greeley.

After serving in the Air Force (1st Lt. 18th Fighter Interceptor Squadron) during the Korean War, Bill joined his father and brother in the family business in 1956 as a Funeral Director. It was his lifelong career. He never fully retired. You would find Bill working services and he was ever present as a mentor and advisor to the staff at the Allnutt Macy Chapel.

Bill was an active member of Occidental Lodge #20 AF & AM, Colorado Consistory, Masonic Bodies, El Jebel Shrine, the Greeley Elks, and the Union Colony Pioneer Society. He was past Commander of American Legion Post #18, original board member and Past President of the Greeley Boys Club, trustee and past president of the North Colorado Medical Center Board of Directors and the North Colorado Medical Center Foundation, member of the Greeley Rotary Club, Greeley Chamber of Commerce Board, and was very involved as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He served one year as president of the National Selected Morticians. Bill was a member of First Congregational Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and on multiple Boards.

In the words of the staff, Bill was an amazing leader for all who worked at the Allnutt Funeral Service - Macy

Chapel. He was gentle but firm in his advisement and employees learned to do things the “Allnutt Way.” There was never a time when Bill was at the location that we did not learn something about him, his family or the Greeley community. He was an amazing doorman at services and we envision that he will be in Heaven to greet us as our doorman.

Bill’s family was most important and treasured in his life. His three children and nine grandchildren have kept him young and current without losing the dignity and respect earned by his many years. He followed sports, from keeping up with the children and grandchildren to the Broncos and Rockies. As an avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed fly-fishing, skiing (which he did from the age of 10 until he was 87 years old), and trips to Walden to work cattle with his son Mike.

Bill and Dee enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as well as abroad. They also hosted more than twenty foreign exchange high school students from many countries all over the world. They were able to visit many former exchange students in their home countries and many of them returned to Greeley with their families to visit with Bill, Dee and their family.

He is survived by his children Mike (Windi) Allnutt, of Walden, Rick (Susan) Allnutt of Glen Haven, and Kathy Roche of Greeley; sisters Nancy Duran and Marjorie Brunner; nine grandchildren, one great-child (and another on the way); as well as thirteen nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dolores “Dee” Allnutt; his parents; brother Jack Allnutt; son-inlaw Patrick Roche; sister-in-law Nancy Allnutt; and brother-in-law, Esmiel Duran.

A visitation will be held from 3:007:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Allnutt Funeral Service, Macy Chapel, 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, CO. Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2020 at Linn Grove Cemetery. A procession to Linn Grove will start at 10:30 a.m. at the new Allnutt Macy Chapel, 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, CO. Seating will be limited so you are encouraged to bring your own lawn chair and umbrella. The family would also like to request that attire be “picnic casual.”

Mark Roskam Mark Roskam lived his life to the fullest until a brain aneurysm took his life suddenly on Sunday, June 21st, 2020 in Vancouver, WA. Mark was a resident of Estes Park for over 20 years, working as the General Manager of the Holiday Inn, and Trail Ridge Store, Associate Pastor at both Mountainview Bible Fellowship and Rocky Mountain Evangelical Free Church.

Mark was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey, his father, Tony Roskam, and his mother, Darlene Millikan.

Mark’s life is celebrated and survived by many whom he touched, including his wife, Gini Roskam, and his three daughters, Rebekah (Dale Van Deraa), Brooke Roskam, and Katie Roskam. He treasured his five grandchildren, Hunter, Berkeley, Everett, Audrey, and Jude. He is also survived by his beloved brothers Mike (Sherrill) and Doug (Kaye) Roskam and step siblings Barb

Cupp and Brian Robyn. As well as his step-father, Carl Millikan and step-mother, Bea Roskam.

Mark was the wellloved Chaplain of Open House Ministries in Vancouver, WA, and greatly enjoyed his work with the residents, and as a bike mechanic in the Wheel Deals bicycle shop.

A service held at Liberty Bible Church of the Nazarene will be live streaming starting at 2 p.m. PST on Friday, June 26th, with all loved ones and friends encouraged to participate virtually.
