Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held For Town's First Electric Trolley Free shuttle service begins A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last week for the Town of Estes Park's newest addition to the transit fleet -- a grant-funded electric trolley. Parking and Transit Manager Vanessa Solesbee kicked off the ceremony with remarks about the history of procuring the trolley, dating back to 2017 when previous Transit Program Manager Brian Wells led efforts to write two successful grant requests to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for two fully-electric, battery powered trolleys and one charging station. The arrival of the first of the two trolleys was celebrated today at the ceremony. The second trolley is expected to arrive in mid to late 2021.

Mayor Wendy Koenig acknowledged the work of the Town's Transportation Advisory Board in helping to move the transit program to a more sustainable future. At the time the grant was put together, staff projected that the two trolleys would realize a savings of 3,456 gallons of fuel over one season and result in a reduction in 16 different pollutants, most notably Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide. The passenger and pedestrian experience will

also be improved by a reduction in fumes and noise when the trolley is in service.

In addition to Mayor Koenig and Manager Solesbee, Town Administrator Travis Machalek, Public Works Director Greg Muhonen, Public Information Officer Kate Rusch, Transportation Advisory Board Chair Belle Morris, and CoChair Tom Street were in attendance from the Town of Estes Park. Brian Wells, now with Rocky Mountain Transit Management and Jeremy Hiler with Motiv Power Systems (vendor) were also in attendance.

The trolleys were funded by FTA grants at 80% Federal Share (provided through CDOT) and 20% Local Match.

The charging station was 90% Federal Share and 10% Local Match.

Estes Transit service begins today with enhanced public health and safety protocols including requirements that all passengers (and drivers) must wear masks. Let’s Focus On What We Can Control: Responsible Planning Goals matter. As do plans, people and processes for achieving them. A point that is too often lost amongst the seemingly never ending jockeying for position, challenges over who’s right, and questioning of motives and intents that the characterize current discourse in the world.

Need this be the case? I think not.

Consider our lives here in the Estes valley. Our dependence on electricity to do much of what we do. Environmental concerns about using carbon-based, non-renewable sources for producing the electricity we use.

Now consider Platte River Power Authority. Our source for electricity. The provider of wholesale electricity to the utilities of its owner communities–Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont, Loveland. And the eight-member board of directors that governs PRPA. On which I, as mayor, strive to set policy to meet our electric needs now and in the future.

Think about the many ways PRPA and the over 2,000 community- owned electric utilities help meet the collective energy needs of 48 million Americans.

How it provides electricity to you through our local utility, Estes Park Power & Communications.

Then think about Rawhide Unit 1, a coal burning plant located northwest of Wellington, Colorado, operational in 1984. More than half of the electricity needs for our four communities have been provided by Rawhide Unit 1. Recognize that at 36 years old, Rawhide has been named the fifth cleanest coal-fired power plant in the U. S. by Electric Light and Power magazine.

Reflect on the fact that Craig Units 1 retiring 2025 and Unit 2 retiring before 2030 with federal hydropower contracts, natural gas resources, market purchases, wind and solar resources meet the remaining energy needs of the four owner-communities.

Next consider that the board approved a Resource Diversification Policy in December 2018, calling for PRPA to have a 100% non- carbon energy mix by 2030.

And that three weeks ago, PRPA announced that Rawhide Unit 1 would cease producing electricity by 2030, a full 16 years before previously planned.

The actions of PRPA are a fitting tribute to the importance of identifying needs, setting goals, and having plans, people and processes in place for achieving those goals.

In my short time as mayor, I’ve been impressed with PRPA and its board’s commitment to press on toward its noncarbon goal while putting plans, people and processes in place to supply Estes Park and the other owner communities with adequate, safe, reliable and cost-effective energy. Throughout, Jason Frisbie, PRPA general manager and CEO, has shown his commitment to state-of the art and environmentally progressive energy production though responsible planning and execution.

Failing to plan is planning to fail. The environmentally friendly plans in place for successfully meeting the electricity needs of Estes Park and the other community owners of PRPA meet a critical need. They also show us what’s possible.

Let’s take the lessons about responsible planning by PRPA and apply them to other the challenges we face here.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On June 15 at 10:47 p.m. police were called to the 100 block of Cleave Street where they contacted a 26 year old Estes Park female who was wanted on multiple warrants out of EPPD for restraining order violations. She was arrested and transported to Larimer County Jail.

On May 17 at 4:30 p.m. police contacted a 24 year old female from Laramie, WY in the 100 block of MacGregor Ave. where they issued the female a summons for theft and she was later released.

On June 16 at 3:07 a.m. police stopped a 33 year old female driver from Loveland, CO in the 1500 block of Raven Circle and charged her with DUI and transported her to the Larimer County Jail.

On June 14 at 12:00 noon police cited a 58 year old male from Estes Park for littering in the 300 block of West Riverside Drive and the 400 block East Wonderview Ave., he was later released.

On June 16, at 10:03 p.m. police were called to the 300 block of East Wonderview Ave. where they cited a 27 year old male from Saraland, AL for trespassing, he was later released.

On June 19 at 9:19 p.m. police were called to the 100 block of South Saint Vrain Ave. where they contacted a 32 year old male from Boulder, CO. He was charged by Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and also given a citation from EPPD for criminal mischief and criminal tampering.

On June 20 at 1:21 a.m. police were called to the 800 block of MacGregor Ave. where they charged a 25 year old male from Estes Park with 3rd degree assault, false imprisonment and domestic violence. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On June 22 at 12:21 a.m. police stopped a 51 year old driver from Nederland, CO in the 1000 block Big Thompson Ave. and cited him for driving while revoked, weaving and fictitious license plates. In the same traffic stop, they arrested a 31 year old male from Estes Park who was wanted on warrants out of Boulder County for theft, driving under restraint and no proof of insurance.

On June 23 at 11:04 p.m. police were called to the 800 block of Big Thompson

Ave. where they arrested a 36 year old male from Colorado Springs, CO and charged him with 3rd degree assault, criminal mischief x 2, and harassment x 2. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On June 28 at 4:10 a.m. police were called to the 1000 block of Tranquil Lane where they arrested a 33 year old male from Loveland, CO and charged him with felony menacing, 2nd degree assault, child abuse, prohibited use of a weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, illegal discharge of a firearm and domestic violence.

He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On June 29 at 6:19 p.m. police arrested a 23 year old female from Loveland, CO in the 400 block of East Wonderview Ave. The female was found to be wanted on a warrant out of Loveland PD for failure to appear on no proof of insurance and expired license plates charges. She was later released on bond from EPPD. On June 30 at 11:49 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 400 block of Elm Ave. On scene they arrested a 25 year old Estes Park male for 2nd degree assault and he was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On July 3 at 3:07 a.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 300 block of East Wonderview Ave. On scene they charged a 33 year old male from Denver, CO and charged him with child abuse, false imprisonment, theft, obstructing telephone communications and domestic violence. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On July 3 at 8:35 p.m. police were called to the 1700 block of Big Thompson Ave. where they cited a 51 year old Estes Park female for harassment and a bias-motivated crime. She was cited and released.

On July 4 at 3:03 p.m. police were called to the 200 block of East Elkhorn Ave. where they issued a citation to a 52 year old male from Loveland, CO for obstruction of a sidewalk. He was cited and released.

On July 4 at 9:18 p.m. police arrested a 46 year old male from Longmont, CO in the 1200 block of High Drive who was wanted on a warrant out of Loveland PD for failing to comply with probation, the original conviction was driving while ability impaired.

Third Street Traffic Calming Pilot Program Begins On July 22 The Town of Estes Park will test a traffic calming pilot program on Third Street to help reduce the amount of cut-through traffic between State Highway 7 and U.S. 36. Residents of Third Street provided feedback to the Town stating that traffic frequently speeds between the two highways, which creates an unsafe situation in the narrow and congested neighborhood roadway.

The Town will hold two outdoor, neighborhood site meetings to discuss this pilot program. The first meeting will be held Wednesday, July 15 at the corner of Third Street and South Court at 5 p.m., and will introduce the planned approach as well as an online survey that will be available to citizens during the testing period.

The second neighborhood meeting will be held Wednesday, August 26 at the same location, at the corner of Third Street and South Court, at 5 p.m. This follow-up meeting will discuss the effectiveness of the pilot program and will present the survey results, which will lead into a discussion to help the Town develop a solution for the future. The pilot program will introduce "Road Closed To Thru Traffic" barricades (8 feet wide) centered in the roadway at each end of 3rd Street, which will leave approximately 12 feet on either side of the barricade for local traffic to enter and exit.

These devices will be installed Wednesday, July 22 and are planned to be removed Wednesday, August 19. A diagram of the pilot program is shown at the left.

On November 20, 2019, the Town hosted an open house to discuss issues and options for improving this street including traffic flow, traffic calming, pedestrian safety, and parking. During the meeting, Public Works Director Greg Muhonen discussed the current safety and traffic issues associated with Third Street, and potential traffic calming solutions. Six different conceptual designs for traffic and parking configurations were presented for consideration and public comment.

As a result of the meeting, the Town decided to test traffic calming concepts on Third Street prior to moving forward with a final design.

Larimer County Sees Increase In COVID-19 Cases Larimer County Public Health is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases in the community. Yesterday there were 16 reported cases, up from a daily average of five the last few weeks.

Larimer County residents have done a great job flattening the curve, but this is a concerning trend. Residents need to continue to be diligent. Ages of reported cases have continued to drop, and the median age of cases is now between 20 and 30 years old. While this age demographic doesn’t tend to get very sick from COVID-19, these cases continue to create community spread in our community.

Face coverings, social distancing, handwashing and frequent cleaning all help slow the spread of the virus in the community. These requirements must continue in order to allow Larimer County to move forward with reopening.

Local Public Health agencies will have the opportunity to move forward into the next statewide phase of reopening, called Protect-Our-Neighbors. Counties must qualify for Protect-Our-Neighbors status which requires that counties meet certain baseline metrics for COVID-19 cases. This increase of cases could mean Larimer County might not qualify to

move to the next phase of reopening.

Larimer County Public Health monitors early warning indicators that were included in the county suppression plan submitted to the state. These indicators are used by the Health Department to monitor the health of our hospital systems and COVID-19 case data.

One Stop For Electrical Permits And Inspections Getting electrical work permitted and inspected can now be done in one place through a new Larimer County service for residents and builders in unincorporated Larimer County that started July 1st.

Contractors and residential customers can now get both of these services from the Larimer County Building Division, Third Floor, 200 West Oak St., Fort Collins, instead of the State of Col-

orado.

The service is being offered to help speed up the permit and inspection process. Many customers have requested that the Larimer County Building Division provide these services, and they’re now up and running.

Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo Queens Need Your Help To Give Cancer The Boot

Due to COVID19, The Rooftop Rodeo is canceled this year. Along with it, Estes Park Health Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, Crowns for the Care, will not award a Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo 2020. The Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo Crown is given to the person who raises the most money for Oncology Services at Estes Park Health during June and the first week of July. All of us at the Estes Park Health Foundation Queens Committee know this fundraiser well because each one of us won the competition the year we competed.

After winning the title of Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo, we join the Queens Committee, an all-volunteer group of Crowns for the Care Winners that recruit and mentor new competitors to fundraise for Estes Park Health Oncology Services during Paint Estes Pink.

Supporting cancer treatment services here in Estes Park is imperative to taking good care of the people that live in our community. If you or a loved one has ever undergone cancer treatment, you understand the fatigue, nausea, and sheer volume of medical appointments

involved to defeat the disease. With your help today, we can continue to expand and improve Oncology Services here in Estes Park, saving precious hours and energy for patients and caregivers who otherwise must drive back and forth to the Valley for care.

Public Fundraising For Estes Park Women’s Monument Project In Downtown Estes Park Has Begun The public fundraising efforts for the Estes Park Women’s Monument project are now officially underway. This is an exciting local grassroots project that is meant to honor the historical Women of Estes Park and is fully supported by the Estes Park Town Council and the Estes Park Parks Advisory Board. Many thanks to the Estes Park Town Council for their full support of the project and for providing the prominent downtown parcel of land. It’s very exciting that the Town strongly supports this wonderful grassroots project. The historical women of Estes Park have contributed so much to our community and this new public art will honor and highlight those contributions. The new monument will also serve to educate all who visit about the significant and interesting contributions that local Women have made to Estes Park. It was a goal of the project to start fundraising before the 100th Anniversary

The ultimate goal is to install and dedicate this monument by the summer of 2021. Now is the time for you to make a tax deductible donation and be part of this project. Warning: The first part of this column is not for the weak of stomach. Read at your own risk. Unless you’re 13. Then you should definitely read it.

“The Exorcist” was a horror movie released in 1973, when I was 13. I never saw it but everybody at school was talking about it. It was about a 12-year-old girl possessed by demons and it was scary and gory and gross. People fainted while watching it, kids said, eyes agape in horror.

Especially fascinating to me was the talk that in one scene of the movie the possessed girl tossed her cookies. (Hey, I was a typical young teen intrigued by the things adults would rather not talk about.) The rumor flying around Monroe Junior High School was that it was really pea soup.

Eeeeuuuu. And her head spun around 360 degrees!

The Bible tells a story of evil spirits possessing a man near the Sea of Galilee. Jesus exorcised the evil from the man and sent “Legion” into the bodies of 2,000 pigs nearby. The swine, now deranged, rushed down a steep bank into the sea and drowned. This story is captivating too.

There are bad guys, the performing of a miracle, and a happy ending (for the man, not the pigs).

Those poor pigs, snuffling and snorting about with their snouts to the ground, looking for grubs and other tasty morsels to eat and minding their own pig business, when the next thing they knew, they were driven to run off a cliff to their tragic demise.

This must be what it’s like when a hog farmer takes his livestock to the stockyards and the unsuspecting animals become tomorrow’s hot dogs.

Hot dogs.

This past Fourth of July, in honoring a longstanding American tradition, I ate my annual hot dog. It’s a once-a-year thing for me, eating a hot dog. (I’m in the minority when it comes to coney consumption. Annually Americans consume 20 billion hot dogs. That’s billion—with a B. So I figure it’s ok for me to eat one a year. I can do it as long as I don’t think about what a frankfurter is made of.) Hot dogs taste surprisingly good, darn it. Yet when I read the list

of ingredients and see words like diacetate, erythrobate and nitrite, and five ingredients that include the word sodium, I know they’re bad. Bad dogs.

The original frankfurters that came to this country from Frankfurt, Germany in the late 1800s were made with pork only.

Today however, cheaper wieners are made with a mixture of pork and chicken (and other things too weird to mention). If I’m going to eat a hot dog, it needs to be a quality product. For our Fourth of July supper I went all out and bought 100% beef franks. Nathan’s Famous. Jumbo.

Restaurant style—whatever that means.

Because I’m not a regular consumer of hot dogs, I had to rely on the internet to tell me how to grill them. I bid on a grill at a Rotary fundraiser last year and won, so I have a nice Weber grill. (The competition was fierce. It got down to the last few seconds and two of us hovered over the bid sheet, elbowing each other out of the way.

Right at the very end, he was a gentleman and stepped aside so I could win the coveted grill. He was so nice about it I felt like he should have taken the grill home.)

(Oh well.)

I reviewed several websites and felt certain I could do this without causing “hot dog havoc,” as one site described it. (That occurs when the griller tries to turn the wieners so all sides get those nice striped grill marks but they won’t stay put, rolling back to their original side.)

I managed to grill up a great pack of hot dogs. There were none with split skins, they got just the right amount of burnt, and I even toasted the buns on the upper rack, all without angst. With ketchup, mustard and pickle relish on top (gotta have that pickle relish), I was able to actually enjoy my once-a-year hot dog.

The “seedless” watermelon with more seeds in it than a Kansas sunflower…now that’s another story.

Order Now For Glen Haven Burritos!

Traditions change, but the end result is the same… to raise monies to support this small but active all volunteer fire department. Carroll Martin who moved to the Glen in 1975 along with her husband Greg who was fire chief in 1978, helped start the event called “Fire Days.” The Glen Haven Fire Belles as they were called, came up with fun and unique ideas to raise money to support the Glen Haven Volunteer Fire Dept. There was a raw egg toss, horseshoe tournament, watermelon eating contest (and seed spitting) and tug of war with a firehose. The day ended with a raffle and sometimes a dance! They also sold t-shirts with fun designs; a few shown here.

Years later the annual event became an “Annual Pancake Breakfast” where the firemen cooked up a scrumptious breakfast consisting of pancakes, eggs, and sausage for the hundreds of people who came to support our little town. The bake sale and silent auction are always a big hit and helps this small fire department (a 501 (c) (3) non-profit Colorado corporation) of 20 volunteers who help defend over 500 structures located on over 25,000 acres of mostly forested land and responds to vehicle crashes and inci-

dents requiring emergency assistance along County Road 43. They also support other area agencies (Estes Park, Drake . . . ) when called upon.

Fire Chief Kevin Zagorda reports that

this year GHAVFD has worked with the community to update their Community Wildfire Preparation Plan (CWPP) and to submit an application to become a Firewise USA certified community. This includes a wildfire risk assessment. They are working with community volunteers and Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office Emergency Services to accomplish some of the mitigation work laid out in the CWPP this summer. The CWPP is viewable on their new website ghavfd.org. They have also broken ground on an addition to Station 2 which is being fully funded as an Eagle Scout Project.

bottles will expire in September. They applied for a FEMA grant to purchase new SCBAs but were not successful so they must keep their 15-year-old breathing masks and regulators in service and only purchase new air bottles. Larimer County has given them a grant to help purchase new bottles but they still need to raise about $14,000.

We hope that next year we will be able to return to having the pancake breakfast, bake sale and silent auction, but because of the pandemic, this year the Fire Department Auxiliary decided to have a “Drive Thru Burrito Breakfast.”

James Pickering Earns Pioneer Award The Pioneer Award is the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation annual recognition of a person in the community that has contributed to the rich history and positive legacy of the town. This year, the Pioneer Award Recipient is James H. Pickering, Ph.D. Dr. Pickering has served as the Town of Estes Park’s Historian Laureate since 2006.

He received his undergraduate education at Williams College and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University.

As a professor of English, specializing in American literature and American studies, he taught at Michigan State University, serving as the director of the Honors College; and at the University of Houston, where he served as dean, provost, and president.

Jim first came to the Estes Valley in the late 1940s, vacationing with his parents and sister in a 1916 log cabin on the slopes of the Twin Sisters in the Tahosa Valley. He became a part-time resident in Estes Park in 1992 and served on the board of directors of the Estes Park Museum Friends and Foundation for nine years.

Included among his numerous scholarly publications are 46 books, articles, and reviews of the history and literature of the Estes Park region of Colorado. Most recently, Jim collaborated with Mic Clinger and Derek Fortini on the Estes Park and

Rocky Mountain National Park-Then and Now, revised edition (2019) published by the Friends Press. For a more complete list of Jim’s publications, please see the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation website (http://estesparkmuseumfriends.org).

This spring, Jim continued to give back to the community by making a recent book, Essays Old and New, available free of charge through the Estes Park Museum (www.estes.org.museum) either as a PDF or in Kindle form.

Jim explains in the preface to the book that he intended to publish the essays more traditionally, but the COVID-19 pandemic altered his plans. He wanted readers to have access to the essays easily and quickly while most of us were (and are) staying safe at home. His intended audience, “first and foremost are the friends and supporters of the Estes Park Museum, those individuals who over the years have so generously helped the Museum achieve its mission to preserve and share the history of the Estes valley.” Jim is one of those people who shares his knowledge freely in conversation, lectures, workshops, and the large number of books he has authored.

We hope to be able to celebrate in person to honor Jim this fall.

The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc., is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Estes Park Museum through fundraising, publications, outreach, volunteerism, special projects, and events.

Land Trust Breakfast Focuses On Decline In Bird Population Since 1970 the population of North American birds has declined by 30%, or nearly three billion birds. It was December of 2019, when I last collected aluminum tabs designated to provide free money to Crossroads Ministries. Little did any of us know how important the services of Crossroads would be to the people who live and work here in the Estes Valley.

COVID 19 hit hard across the world and eventually came to the Estes Valley in March/April of 2020. Crossroads has provided so many resources to our neighbors (maybe even those reading these words, as well) …but resources are continually needed to serve our community.

Dog Obedience Class Offered By Linda’s Pet Care Services

Summer Dog Training Course Summer is here and so is every scent and every animal on earth! Is your fourlegged friend paying more attention to elk duds than you? Are you wondering when he got so big? Did he always jump on every stranger and why won’t he listen when you beg him to stop? When did she start chewing on the remote control? Did they always have this much energy? And when did they forget everything they were ever taught? Will they ever learn to come when you call them?

If you are looking for a positive program to enroll your puppy or adult dog in, Linda’s Pet Care Services is offering a basic, five week obedience course beginning Monday, July 20, at 5 p.m.

The course includes all basic commands including sit, down, settle, off, stand, watch me, leave it and stay as well as recalling, loose leash walking and learning to how to be appropriate with other people and pets while on leash.

We learn both verbal and hand signals and place a heavy emphasis on developing good social skills with both humans and dogs, both on leash and off.

There are also weekly handouts, articles from positive reinforcement trainers and a weekly Q & A to discuss ongoing dog behaviors (wanted and unwanted). This class emphasizes teaching owners how to relate to their pets in a more positive and loving way while shaping positive, wanted behavior. 2020 Pepsi Little People’s Volunteer Of The Year Award

The winner of the 2020 Virtual Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships Volunteer-of-the-Year Award is Ruth Moser.

Ruth lives in Estes Park, CO, but works online for a Massachusetts company. She is a dedicated and talented golfer, with an immense knowledge of the USGA Handicapping and World Handicapping Systems, and a love for mathematics.

It was this knowledge that made her indispensable to the success of the pioneer Virtual Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships.

In order to have a virtual tournament, it was necessary to develop a method of equalizing the playing field for the boys and girls 10-18 age divisions, who would be playing their two rounds at courses of their choice. Ruth devised a process to utilize the WHS formula, making it pos-

sible to hold this pioneer golf event.

As a result, the Virtual Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships drew 113 golfers, registering from 22 states, Barbados, Bermuda, British Columbia, Ontario and Latvia, and was a huge success.

“Without Ruth’s efforts, the 2020 Virtual Pepsi Little People’s would not have been possible,” stated Nan Ryan, Little People’s Founder and Executive Director. “We owe its success to Ruth’s knowledge and dedicated spirit.”

ABOUT PEPSI LITTLE PEOPLE’S The Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships is an international junior golf competition for boys and girls aged three through 18, and annually draws some 250 talented junior golfers from all over the world. Because of Covid-19, the regular tournament had to be cancelled out of health concerns for players, families, volunteers and golf staffs, and was replaced by the pioneer Virtual Little People’s. The 48th annual tournament will be held June 21-23 at Westview Golf Course in Quincy, Illinois USA. Competition is held in seven age divisions for boys and seven age divisions for girls. ARE YOU A ‘POKER OF HOLES IN’…OR A ‘PROVIDER OF’…THE DARKNESS?

Treasure Island author, Robert Lewis Stevenson was sickly during his youth. One night his nurse found him with his nose pressed against the frosty pane of his bedroom window. “Child, come away from there. You’ll catch your death of cold,” she fussed. Young Robert wouldn’t budge. He sat mesmerized, watching an old lamplighter slowly moving through the dark night, lighting each street lamp along his route. Pointing, Robert exclaimed, “See; look there; there’s a man poking holes in the darkness.”

One thing that has been happening in recent days is a lot of ‘poking of holes in the darkness’. It’s happening in the battle with Coronavirus. These have been very ‘dark days’ and, thus, the real need for people to ‘poke holes in the darkness’. And it has come…in the form of ongoing discoveries being made in how to deal with the virus…and we anticipate more of these ‘holes’ in the days to come. And, everywhere we look, we see ‘holes’ ‘poked’ by people in all walks of life who risk their own lives and well-being, giving time and energy in order to bring help and hope and comfort in these dark times.

‘Poking of holes in the darkness’ has been occurring in recent efforts to ‘bring to light’ and draw our nation’s attention to social injustices that have taken place during our nation’s historic past.

Many of us will admit that we have been oblivious to many things that have taken place in our history and, especially, how they have impacted the lives of so many. Such ‘enlightenment’ has been long overdue and can have a positive future impact if it is presented right and handled right on the part of all involved.

In Stevenson’s day, ‘poking of holes in the darkness’ was an uplifting benefit that the community received from the ‘lamplighter’. His value was not in drawing attention to the ‘darkness’, but in bringing a cheerful spirit and helpful illumination to all struggling through that ‘darkness’.

Consequently, if all society receives is a constant reminder of how ‘dark’ it is out there, we will not be provided much help…or hope.

In the Bible, ancient Israel had its own kind of ‘lamplighters’ who ‘poked holes in the darkness’. Isaiah wrote: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’”

(Isaiah 52). He wasn’t writing about messengers or ‘lamplighters’ in general. He was reminding us that bringing ‘good news’, ‘poking holes in the darkness’, is what faith and hope are all about. We ‘poke holes in the darkness’ in lives when we bear good news. Each of us is a herald, broadcasting good news or bad news. We ‘poke holes in the darkness’, or become Hazel never considered herself a ‘lamplighter’. She loved to sing, but sang poorly. She sang anyway. Hazel lived in a rundown apartment house on a rough side of town. Her walks to and from the bus stop found her constantly aware of her frightening area. Despite noises at night, and some tough looking characters (one living in her building), she determined to come and go as she pleased, even to evening services at her church. Late one night as she returned from services, she saw someone lurking in the hallway. She was terrified. The silhouette was huge, much like the man she had been afraid of. With no place to run and no one to call, she stepped forward, walking right through the door, singing at the top of her lungs: “When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark.” And the chorus: “Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone.” She walked past the hulking figure, up the stairs and into her room. As she closed the door she was trembling. Finally she fell asleep.

The next morning she found a note slipped under her door during the night. It read: “Dear lady: I don’t know who you are, but I want to thank you for singing to me last night. I was ready to cash it in—to take my life. Then I heard you singing as you entered. It sounded like you didn’t have a care in the world. You got me to thinking about never walking alone. You saved my life. I’m going home to start over. I’m leaving today. I just wanted to thank you for your song.” The writing was almost illegible, but the signature was clear, written by the scary man who lived in the building. Hazel never suspected that her song would ‘poke holes in someone’s darkness’.

We are all called to poke holes in the darkness. The Lord has a way of using our ‘light’— songs, words, joy–to penetrate the dark corners of other people’s worlds. Right now, in a pretty dark world, please ‘poke holes in the darkness’.

We thank the Estes Valley for doing just that, until those days of stay-at-home orders had passed. Now we’re ready and eager to receive those items you’ve been holding in safe keeping.

Maybe there are books and movies you checked out in March, stocking up before the library entered its temporary closure. Now is the perfect time to gather those up for us: think of it as “spring cleaning” in July.

And-your “spring cleaning” just might bring a smile to someone who’s been on the wait list for one of those books or movies. Those items will be available to share again-safely, of course.

To give us a fresh starting place, all items borrowed last spring are due August 1.

Our library remains fine-free, so there are no daily fines to worry about—not now, nor any time of year. However, we do charge the full replacement cost for any items that are lost or damaged.

Where to return those items?

There are two great options.

You can return items inside the library building during our current open hours, which are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. From there, with the wearing of a face covering and application of hand sanitizer, you can enjoy browsing the stacks and borrowing new items.

Or-you can return items anytime day or night from your vehicle using the drive-through no-touch book returns located in front of the library. No need to find a parking space—and in just seconds, you’re on your way.

Note that the book returns at the Estes Valley Community Center remain closed until further notice.

So what happens to library books after they’re returned? We quarantine them for three full days. That’s the best method to make certain materials are virus-free before they return to the shelves.

The most recent and reliable study just released by the Battelle Institute tested common Library materials (books, paper, plastic covers) and found that the Covid-19 virus was “not detectable on the materials after three days of quarantine.” You can find the complete study linked under “Quarantine of Library Items” on our website.

After you’ve returned library materials, don’t worry if you find them listed on your online account for several days after. They’ll get checked in once the quarantine time is complete.

All of these procedures are guided by our top priority: your safety—and ours.

Jazzercize In Estes Park

There is a reason that Jazzercise celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

Jazzercise, Inc, founded and still under the direction of Judi Sheppard Missett and Shana Missett Nelson, is committed to keeping its quality program available to people around the world.

When COVID-19 resulted in closure of group gatherings, Jazzercise, Inc immediately worked to pivot the international organization to keep the program available to its committed members. Within a couple of days of closures in New York and Washington, Jazzercise members of closed studios received free access to Jazzercise On Demand, a streaming program offered

by Jazzercise, Inc. However, because of laws about streaming music owned by the music industry, the current and popular music that members are used to in class typically cannot be offered through streaming. When it was clear that this was going to be more than a short pause in gathering, Jazzercise, Inc began negotiations with the music industry to allow its franchisees to

stream classes to current customers. They termed it Live and Local and it has allowed Jazzercise members to continue to workout with their local instructors since April 1.

Jazzercise Estes Park, located in Piccadilly Square, closed for live classes when everything else in Estes Park closed mid-March. By April 6, owner Patti Aldridge was teaching the routines her members know to the popular music they love on Facebook Live. Debbie, a member of Jazzercise Estes Park says, “(Live and Local) kept me both sane and physically fit. It created routine and normalcy when nothing else seemed normal.”

Cynthia agrees. “Online classes give each day shape, form and build community. It has made a huge improvement in my attitude toward the quarantine and has helped me to be more productive.”

Jazzercise On Demand is a fun and quality fitness streaming service, actually just launched late last year. It was a great bridge. But in addition to not having the popular music we recognize, as local member Sunny tells us, “Jazzercise is more than an exercise program, through mutual support we build lasting friends and stay healthy at the same time.” Jazzercise really is more than an exercise program, Patti agrees. Since its inception in 1969, Judi and Jazzercise have been making an enormous impact in the lives of women. “Although to

clarify, it’s not just for women,” Patti points out. At the 50th anniversary celebration in San Diego last summer, Judi shared that she has received numerous letters and calls describing how the program and the instructors and students have changed lives, even to the point of helping to escape abusive relationships.

“Everywhere I have been a member or taught Jazzercise, the women in the classes are there for each other, supporting more than fitness among friends.”

It is well known in the health and fitness industries that two keys for a person maintaining a successful fitness program are doing something one enjoys and doing it with friends. “Dancing with friends makes it enjoyable and adds accountability,” Patti explains. “And the dancing and fun music makes you forget it’s a workout!” The fact that it is almost too fun to call exercise is echoed by Suzanne, another member of Jazzercise Estes Park, who says: “A wonderful way to stay fit while enjoying friendship and dancing!”

With the commitment of members around the world as well as the quick adjustments made by Jazzercise, Inc, the support they give to their franchisees, and the commitment of owners everywhere, Jazzercise has maintained 80% of it’s membership through the pandemic closures. “I think that really says something about the support that is offered from Judi and Shanna and the rest of the team in California. They have been there supporting owners with constant en-

couragement, information, business support, and technology support as we all navigate something we have never experienced,” shared Patti.

Jazzercise Estes Park is now back in person for those comfortable, although outside in the parking lot to further minimize coronavirus exposure. Classes also continue to be streamed to members on Facebook Live and will be as long as Jazzercise, Inc and the music industry have the agreement, to allow those who do not feel comfortable gathering in person to participate in Live and Local classes from the comfort of their own homes.

Five Fun Facts About… Bobcats

This week’s featured animal is the bobcat.

Although prevalent in Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park, bobcats are rarely seen preferring the cover of night, the shadows of dawn and dusk, and thick brush to hide their presence.

1. Bobcats are the most prevalent wildcat in North America with a huge range that spans from coast to coast. A study in the November 2010 issue of Journal of Fish and Wildlife Management estimated the U. S. bobcat population to be as high as 3.5 million individuals.

“bobbed” tail, which is about six inches in length. In comparison, the mountain lion, which is also found in this region, is up to three feet in length. Lynx also have a short tail but are more typically found in southern Colorado.

3. A bobcat’s favorite meal is rabbit, which they hunt by stealthy pounces rather than long chases. In lieu of rabbits, bobcats will also eat birds, mice,

squirrels and other small mammals.

4. Bobcats prefer to hunt along habitual routes, traveling as much as seven miles in an evening looking for prey.

5. Bobcats are solitary animals only coming together during the mating season in February and March. Multiple bobcats seen together are most likely a

family. The growing kittens will stay with their mother for about 12 months.

To bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she confronts a prejudice as old as the Appalachians and suspicion as deep as the holler.

In a world we now feel a daily overload of bad news, we will focus on the good in life, even during tough times.

Once in junior high school I stood frozen, appalled at what I was about to say. Earlier in the day, my best friend repeated a racist joke she had heard from her father at home. Later in gym class, while we were standing around getting ready to be picked for a team, I turned around to the girl behind me to share the joke. My words stuck in my throat as I saw that she was black and instantly realized that this joke would hurt her. I stammered and stumbled and turned back around. How much better about myself I would have felt had I opened my mouth earlier and told my friend we should not be telling these kinds of jokes. But I didn’t.

And 57 years later I still remember those feelings of shame. I’m not 12 or 13 anymore and now, after many years of living, a certain amount of education and knowing both good and bad people, I recognize and acknowledge the privilege I have of being white. I’ve never been pulled over by the police because I looked out of place in the neighborhood I was driving through or followed around in a store because of my color or had to have “that conversation” with my son. I can live pretty much anywhere I want to. I can protect my children from people who might not like them. No one will ever say I got a job because of affirmative action. I am never asked to speak for all the people of my race. And I will surely never get that kind of call that my son has died in the street crying out, “I can’t breathe. ” Someone said to me the other day that living in this time is like living in 1918, 1929, and the 1960s. Whoever in a million years would have thought that here in the U. S. we’d be living through a pandemic, a financial collapse and protests.

Certainly not me. We are indeed living in strange times. Mostly home bound, when we do venture out many of us wear masks and stay 6 ft. apart from everyone else. We all watch nervously as the stock market careens from a bull market to a bear market, back again and then back again, again. We listen with concern to our friends with small businesses worry about the lack of customers and guests and to those who’ve lost their jobs. Now, with the opening of our beautiful state we greet an influx of non-mask-wearing tourists which heightens fear for some and has become a political statement of independence for others. In 2020, life shifted. And even though we couldn’t have predicted an economic collapse or deadly pandemic, many of us did believe that racial unrest would break out sooner rather than later due to the increasing number of people recording horrific events with their phones then posting them on Facebook or YouTube. Far too many killings are going viral. What we couldn’t imagine was that the spark to these massive protests would take eight minutes and 46 seconds, the length of time associated with the killing of George Floyd, who died after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck in the street for all who walked by to see. In the protests that followed, that specific time span was the fo-

cus for the protestors. For many people, both black and white, “the banality of evil” Officer Chauvin displayed while kneeling on the neck of an unarmed, handcuffed man while other officers looked on, was finally just too much. The phrase, “the banality of evil” comes from another time and place and refers to the trial of Adolph Eichmann, one of the major organizers of the Holocaust. His deportment at his trial displayed no guilt for his actions. He claimed he bore no responsibility because he was simply doing his job. Can I say, in all consciousness, that I didn’t know what was going on like so many German citizens did 80 years ago? I did. I do. I remember the names: Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Stephon Clark, Breonna Taylor and now from Aurora, Colorado, Elijah McCain. Years ago, I had a button that I used to wear on a jean jacket that said, Silence is the Voice of Complicity. I think it’s time to be more than a button on a jacket. I think it’s time to be silent no more. As Desmond Tutu said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” This is a column about finding the good. Just what is the good here? Maybe it’s the qualitive difference between the protests in the 1960s and now. In spite of an angry and violent beginning, these protests, while still full of righteous anger, have been mostly peaceful. And people of all colors and ages have joined the protest, refusing to be silenced in the face of this injustice. No longer are people saying, not my issue, not my problem. They are aware that we have an opportunity and responsibility to raise our voices and fight injustice where and at the time we see it. We hope we will be heard and new laws outlawing choke holds and no-knock warrants will be written and then obeyed.

And we will “…have an authentic conversation about race,” as Jason St. Julien, Assistant United States Attorney in Colorado, wrote in the Sunday, June 21st, Denver Post, “…. (the) type where you tell the truth, wade into the muck, and confront the un-confrontable.” The good news is, we here in Estes are fortunate to have the caliber of police officers that we do. Because of being a crisis advocate, I worked closely with many of our officers and not once did I witness anything that caused me concern about their treatment of others – no matter their color. We are fortunate to live in a community of caring people who make our community a great place to live. Even still, right now at this moment in time, I think we need to ask ourselves what more can we do to make our community, our state, our country and our world a more equitable and loving place in which all people feel safe and valued. Right now, I’m listening to So You Want to Talk about Race by Ijeoma Oluo. As Helen Keller said, “I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something. “You think outside of the box,” says Hilltop Guild President Donna Squyres. “Since we still want to provide funding for scholarships, special projects, building maintenance and fundraising for the Fire Department in Allenspark, we had to come up with a different solution.”

The Hilltop Guild will begin hosting “Second Saturdays” on Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. at The Kelley House in Allenspark. The Kelley House is located at 18720 Highway 7; fifteen miles from Lyons, and just 30 minutes south of Estes Park on Highway 7.

The Hilltop Guild is a productive and creative association of members who live in the Allenspark, Riverside and Raymond communities. Members create handmade crafts throughout the year, including knit, crochet, woven and quilted items, homemade jellies (made with local berries, gathered in competition with the bears each summer!), jewelry, artistic gourds, handmade stationary, photographs, Country Kitchen baked goods and crafts.

Eight shoppers with masks will be allowed into The Kelley House at a time and there will be two Guild members on hand to answer questions and two others serving as cashiers on the lawn near the front porch. The White Elephant House in back will also be open with used household goods, books, collectibles, toys, outdoor gear and more.

Other dates for Second Saturdays include August 8, September 12 and October 10.

In addition, The Old Gallery in Allenspark has offered to give The Hilltop Guild space to sell their weavings, crafts and other items. Squyres said, “We’re so grateful to be able to share this space and

return the fruits of the members’ labors to areas of need in the greater Allenspark area and beyond.

The group meets weekly throughout the year to learn new skills and create items to be sold. The Kelley House has a Loom Room with eight floor looms.

“Our weavers create gorgeous items that will be for sale, including unique placemats, table runners, scarves and more,” said Squyres.

The group also maintains the site of the historic Allen cabin, the original homestead in Allenspark and the Bunce School, a Historic Designation from the State of Colorado and County of Boulder, which is listed on the National Historic Register. It is one of two rural log schoolhouses remaining in Boulder County and is located near the Kelley House.

The Story Of Lori Mitchell 2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, have formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.”

As a part of the festivities, we plan to collect stories about Estes Valley women in the form of paragraphs. Submission period: now to August 26. Maximum length: 200 words, A story about any woman with a connection to Estes Park. These paragraphs will be collected by the Estes Valley Library. They will then appear in the local newspapers and 100 will be chosen to be published as a booklet for November release. Two days after graduating from Iowa State University in 1980, Lori loaded her Mercury Cougar and drove to Estes Park with $600 in her pocket. In 1983 she helped open the local nursing home to develop and run its activities programs. In 1987 she was promoted to di-

rector of resident and family services, which coordinated social work, admissions, activities, transportation and volunteers.

In 1997, Lori switched gears and went to work at MacGregor Ranch as education coordinator. Lori wrote a two-year, $252,000 State Historical Fund grant that won the Stephen H. Hart Award for the preservation, restoration and interpretation of the ranch’s main barn and 10 outbuildings. Under Lori’s guidance, the ranch hosted 5,000 school children and their chaperones each year. Activities included history education, museum tours, wagon rides, outdoor education and summer history camp. She set up systems to catalog and preserve artifacts at the ranch museum and, in addition, helped brand calves, herd cattle and feed the horses and Black Angus cows.

But Lori missed working with older people, and was hired by the Town of Estes Park as Senior Center director in November 2003. Under her leadership, Lori served and advocated for area seniors until she retired in 2017.

Karen Spotts Sackett was born in Minnesota. She graduated from the St. Barnabas School of Nursing in Minneapolis and in 1965 she took a job at Boulder Memorial Hospital as a Staff Nurse.

Karen excelled in her career, moving from Staff Nurse to Nursing Supervisor, Director of Nurses and Assistant Administrator for Patient Services. She completed an MS degree in Health Administration from University of Colorado, Denver, and in 1984, a former professor encouraged her to apply for the Chief Executive Officer position at the Estes Park Medical Center. She became the first female to join the staff as

a hospital executive. These were challenging times at EPMC – operational losses, declining utilization. Under Karen’s guidance, by 1986 the hospital was not only enjoying a profit, but the 60 bed Prospect Park skilled nursing facility went from 22% occupancy to 100% and a growing number of specialists were attracted to EPMC. She always said, “One of the most important things in a small hospital, is to have a really good Board along with good communication with the town.” Karen has another first, the first woman to join Rotary, sponsored by Bob Ault. After serving in hospital administration elsewhere, Karen has since retired to her mountains in Estes Park.

What Should You Do With An Inheritance?

If you were to inherit a large sum of money, what would you do with it?

The question may not be hypothetical, especially if you are in the millennial, Gen X or Gen Z demographic groups.

That’s because the baby boomers – often referred to as the richest generation in history – are poised to transfer some $30 trillion in assets over the next few decades, according to the consulting firm Accenture.

Of course, this is a “macro” figure, and everyone’s situation is different. Furthermore, since baby boomers are living longer, more active lives, the total amount passed on may end up being considerably less than the estimate.

Nonetheless, you may well receive a medium-to-large inheritance someday, and when that day arrives, you’ll need to decide how best to use your newfound wealth.

Your first move may be to do nothing at all. Generally speaking, you have enough time to decide how to handle the various elements of an inheritance, although if you are inheriting an investment vehicle such as an IRA or a 401(k) plan, you will eventually have to make some decisions about liquidation or withdrawals. (And since these accounts may carry tax obligations, it’s a good idea to consult with your tax advisor fairly soon after you receive your inheritance.) But if a big part of your inheritance simply consists of cash parked in a bank account, there’s nothing wrong with moving the money into a cash management account at a financial services company until you decide what to do with it However, after some time has passed, you may want to put your inheritance to good use. If you’re already working with a financial advisor, you might want to

get some guidance on how to use your new assets to strengthen your existing investment strategy. Do you have any gaps in certain areas? Can you use the money to help diversify your holdings?

Diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, but it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio.

And, of course, if your inheritance is large enough, it may permit you to “max out” on your IRA for years to come, and possibly free you to have even more of your salary deferred into your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement account. Plus, you could use the money for other long-term goals, such as funding a tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan for your children.

You also might use part of your inheritance to donate to the charitable organizations you support. Due to recent changes in tax laws that caused many people to stop itemizing their deductions, charitable groups are in more need of support than ever.

And last, but certainly not least, take this opportunity to review your goals. Is your inheritance large enough for you to adjust your planned retirement age?

And if that age may indeed change, what about your other plans for retirement? Will you now be free to travel more or pursue other hobbies? Will you even need to modify the way you invest for your new reality, possibly by taking a less aggressive approach? Again, a financial professional can help you answer these questions Someone thought enough of you to leave you a valuable inheritance – so use it wisely.

Cecy Turner is an award-winning artist who lives in Dallas, TX most of the year.

We are thrilled that she’s chosen to share her talents with us once again. She paints/teaches in both oil and watercolor, and is particularly fond of plein air painting. In this two-day workshop, you will do a small value study and simplify

landscapes into a maximum of five shapes.

Then, using a limited palette, you will mix every color you need out of those simple colors (great exercise for color mixing and getting every color you need)! Cecy will give a demonstration every morning and students will have the afternoon to paint.

Photo references and supply list will be supplied to registrants. One day the subject will be a snow scene and the other day will be a mountain scene.

Masks will be required and social distancing practiced.

Boredom has finally set in. The truth is, there are a hundred things I could be doing, but I don’t want to attack a single one of them. There should be a name for this affliction—and I’m sure someone, somewhere, has come up with a catchy phrase that captures the full scope of my problem.

But in the meantime, I’m still wallowing in a state of ambivalence. Part of the issue might have something to do with the attire I’ve been wearing since early March. When you’re not leaving the house, why put on a favorite outfit, makeup, or style your hair? Nope; it’s not going to happen. This winter my wardrobe consisted of three pairs of sweatpants—one light gray, one dark gray, and finally, the newest pair which is navy blue. On occasion I’d splurge and wear yoga pants or leggings, but sweats were pretty much what you’d find me in on any given day. Then I’d do my best to coordinate the pants with a favorite sweatshirt. Shoes? Forget them unless they were required because I had to do something outside. If I wasn’t barefoot, slippers and fuzzy socks became my primary footwear. Now this summer, I have jeans for cooler days and four pairs of denim shorts. One pair is for work, two for daily wear, and one pair for dressier occasions.

As for makeup—forget it. I’m one of those women who’s spent her life following in my mother’s footsteps. She never left the house without completing her daily beauty regimen. So, my routine has always included applying foundation, blush, eye shadow, and mascara even for quick trips to the grocery store. But not anymore. I don’t think I’ve held a mascara wand more than a handful of times since the pandemic began. Now that I stop to think about it—it would be interesting to see how cosmetic sales have fared during COVID-19. But I digress.

When it comes to hair . . . That’s been one of the few issues men and women alike seem to have battled together during these difficult times. After hair salons were ordered to close their doors early in the pandemic, both sexes slipped into a state of despair. I loved photos posted by friends on Facebook that illustrated sinks full of shorn locks cut in sheer desperation. While I’m not sure how it turned out, one man I know even resorted to using his electric dog clippers to try and salvage his haircut.

Women, on the other hand, began making jokes about how they would soon know their actual color when the roots became evident. Perhaps I was one of the lucky ones because I’d had a cut in late January and normally only get a trim when I lose total control of my hair.

But I’m not saying that I was immune to the situation. My hair was suffering from the effects of two body perms—the last of which I mishandled. If you’re a movie buff you may have seen the film “My Cousin Vinnie.” It’s one of my favorites and in the climactic courtroom scene the murderer is tricked into confessing. Having already told Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei) who is cross-examining her that she’d gotten a perm earlier in the day, the young woman claimed she’d been in the shower washing her hair when the crime was committed.

Ms. Vito points out that every woman knows you don’t wash your hair for seventy-two hours after the treatment.

Bingo—murder solved.

That’s where I failed—not in a murder—but in waiting three days. Less than twenty-four hours after getting my last body perm, I had an early morning appointment, got up, and automatically followed my usual routine. It wasn’t until early evening I realized that I’d committed the cardinal sin of washing my hair before I was supposed to.

So, the bottom line is that by early June I had stringy uncontrollable hair. But my wonderful hairstylist Kylene Newman rescued me later in the month. She basically cut off all of the dry damaged hair and created a short style I could

work with. But I still wasn’t satisfied: I wanted an even bigger change. After working downtown at Macdonald Bookshop, I’ve watched thousands of people walk by our store window. I’ve seen bright red if not orange hair, blues, pinks, and combinations of all the above.

the subject of discussion, I have wanted to journey a little bit out of the box. So, last week while on a trip to get toothpaste and a few other inconsequential items, I found myself staring at shelves laden with boxes of hair color. One of them came home with me. It sat there for several days before I had courage to take the plunge.

While I love having a hairstylist do the

work while being pampered in the process, it can be expensive and somewhat timeconsuming. So, more often than not, give me twenty-five minutes and a $6.99 box of Nice ’n Easy™ Natural Light Ash Blond #102 and I’m ready to go. But this time I was going to take a risk: I wanted to become a redhead, a color I’ve successfully tinkered with in the past. There had only been two boxes in that shade to choose from and I picked the one that appeared to have wonderful dark undertones blending with the red.

I knew I was in trouble as soon as I began applying the solution. The bright orange-red color reminded me of Bozo the Clown, but it was too late to back down. I didn’t panic completely until I’d blown it dry. Had it been nighttime, I’m sure my hair would have glowed in the dark—it was almost fluorescent. Thank goodness I had Kylene to save me. She said reds fade fairly quickly, but if the color was still obnoxious after a few washings to try using Dove™ dishwashing detergent as a shampoo. I didn’t wait for the hair to fade on its own. Instead I doused it with Dove liquid the next four consecutive days. And guess what? I don’t scare myself now when I walk by a mirror. In fact, the color is actually growing on me. Even so, next time I think I’ll leave the job to professionals.

Estes Recycles Two-Station Drive-Thru Will Benefit Rotary Scholarship Recipients By: Tara Moenning

On Saturday, August 8 from 9 to noon at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies on Brodie Avenue you will be able to shred your sensitive paper documents and properly recycle old paint and related paint products. No other items can be accepted this year at the drive-thru event.

In Estes Park our club has supported local high school graduates with scholarships for over 50 years. (One of our first recipients was our current mayor, Wendy Koenig.) We offer three Academic Scholarships of $8,000 based on academic achievement and promise,

activities, and citizenship. These have a yearly stipend of $2,000 renewable for 4 years based on the holder making normal academic progress and remaining in good academic and disciplinary standing. The funds for these scholarships are raised every year through Rotary activities such as the Rotary Golf Tournament, the Shredathon, and other fundraisers.

Over the years Rotarians, their families, and friends have donated funds for memorial scholarships that are awarded for a specific purpose. We call these “named” scholarships. Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Awards Community Grants By: Jean MaGuire

The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary (EVSR) recently distributed its annual Community Grants for 2020. Now more than ever, the non-profit organizations in the Estes Valley are in need of financial support and the EVSR was pleased to grant a total of $23,601 to 13 organizations.

Funding for the Community Grants primarily comes from the two fundraising events the Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary conducts each year, The Labor Day Arts & Crafts Show and Autumn Gold, as well as through donations from community business partners and individual contributors. The Land Trust Preserves Open Space While Preserving our Community To The Editor: Many residents of the Estes Valley are hourly employees, do not receive paid sick leave, and live from one paycheck to another. These valuable members of our community are more vulnerable to the economic impacts of the coronavirus than others.

In response to this crisis, the Estes Valley Land Trust created its Stewardship Corps - modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s – whereby each Corps member pledged to spend 20 hours pulling weeds, improving forest health, and repairing eroded trails that damage the environment, on properties conserved by the land trust.

In return for this pledge, each Corps member received $500 in April, when most businesses were shut down and paychecks were hard to come by. More than $15,000 was raised specifically for

the Stewardship Corps and none of the land trust’s general membership donations were used for this program.

The land trust received many thank you notes highlighting that the funds were being used to pay rent, purchase groceries, and pay utility bills. One Corps members even wrote: “The relief extends far beyond financial support and into my daily life; it reminds me that I live in an amazing place full of kind, generous people and am blessed to be part of this amazing community.”

The land trust’s mission is to preserve open space for future generations. To do so, it also needed to step up to preserve our community in this time of need. I am thankful for the role that the land trust was able to play in doing so and thank all the donors that made this program.

The exodus from the overpopulated coastline cities is not unlike the historical trend that created this country, or, for that matter, what occurred during the homesteading of the West, the Great Depression, or the aftermath of WWII. When the ties that bind one to a location, such as job, school, or social commitments, cease to exist it yields the freedom to start a new life – and the ability to do that someplace else. The move from the cities to more rural landscapes is a natural reaction, not only to the smog but to the individual sense of being nothing more than a number.

We, as a nation, are entering into a period of redefinition. In the wake of COVID-19, in view of the changing social mores, and (any way it resolves) in the aftermath of the upcoming election, there WILL be changes. What we can do is to consider and define the direction in which those changes will lead. Plenty of research has been completed to determine the advantages that Estes has to offer. Additional analysis has determined what Estes lacks, both economically and ecologically. Our hospital and library are beyond what most communities this size can support. Our nonprofit structure surpasses most much larger cities. We, as a community must carefully choose the path we pursue to keep what is best and improve what is missing.

Despite looking for a new, perhaps friendlier location, people moving crosscountry are also expecting certain things they have at home. Nearly every metropolitan community offers (and often insists upon) separate solutions for compost and recycling, including “hard to recycle material.” While the Ecocycle system in Boulder County is far more extensive, Loveland, and Fort Collins both offer more inclusive options than Estes Park. The good news is that, for very small fees, all of these facilities are available to Estes Valley residents. (Oh, and for those who have not yet heard, Timberline (Fort Collins), Loveland, and 10 collection yards in Boulder County

all accept clam-shells.)

Our K-12 education system is well on the way to becoming a beacon for others to follow. The new Career and Technical Education will only add to the array of opportunities for graduating seniors.

However, we offer limited answers to the parents of preschool children, especially 0-2 year olds. Moreover, perhaps it is time to offer some accredited education beyond grade 12, whether fresh out of high school or in retirement.

Obviously, to be economically viable, we must continue to enhance the possibilities of workforce housing and childcare. We have lost far too many ideal executives because they could not find housing. Too many employees quit because they tire of the commute. Too many must leave town to find childcare.

Too many must restrict their hours to be sure at least one parent is home with young children. We have too many “latchkey kids.”

Naturally, the esthetic environment of our surroundings is an enticement to live here but to keep it we must protect it. They say, “Those who live here came on purpose, no one is here by accident.”

“Once experienced, Estes stays with you.” Still, they also say, “Less than three jobs makes you under-employed.” That leaves too little time to enjoy the benefits of those marvelous vistas.

It is difficult to support a year round lifestyle on a four-month work season.

Broadband will offer an immense expansion in year-round employment opportunities and worldwide contact.

However, we also need year round employment that encompasses a variety of skills, allowing those who want to stay for the winter the livelihood they require and providing those who choose to stay the same quality of life enjoyed in the summer.

We have an intelligent, educated, creative community. Surely, we can find imaginative solutions.

Longs Peak Rotary Club Of Estes Park Marks 10th Anniversary Of Charter Longs Peak Rotary (LPR) Club is celebrating its 10th year having received its charter on June 30, 2010. LPR was formed to offer Rotarians an evening club option and it is the 3rd Rotary Club in Estes Park.

The club’s focus is to support the children and youth of Estes Park with additional projects for at risk populations.

Over the past 10 years the club has had fundraising events with the proceeds over the years going to our scholarship fund, supporting student programs, Future Farmers of America, Bright Christmas, and Honor Flight. The club has sponsored Rotarian foreign travel through the Global Volunteer program, co-sponsored Interact clubs at the high school that included a water project trip to Panama as well as RYLA and young RYLA. The club has provided matching grants for the Estes Park Learning Place, a Global Grant for Glen Haven flood sanitation assistance, and a district grant for La Puente kitchen removal (homeless resource in Alamosa). Members volunteer at the Community Café and the club is the non-profit sponsor for Estes Pak (EP Middle School food resource program).

Fundraising is integral to every Rotary Club and some of the most memorable for LPR include Mister Estes Park held at the Stanly Hotel, a Holiday Gala at the Estes Park Resort, several yearly Flamingo Flockings in the Estes Valley, and a jointly sponsored pre-Duck Race pancake breakfast with the Kiwanis Club. Additional events include a participant Ride the Rockies BBQ in Bond Park and the “Dinner Under the Stars” provided at a member’s home. EP Rotary Clubs support each other with several shared volunteer events: High School After Prom, the Duck Race, and Elk Fest (serving beer at the beer garden). The Global Grant for Glen Haven sanitation projects after the 2013 flood was a multi-club project.

LPR is a small but mighty club that meets twice monthly, usually the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month with a 5:30 p.m. social time and meeting at 5:45 p.m. at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church. LPR always enjoys meeting new people and welcomes any that wish to learn more about Longs Peak Rotary Club. We start the next decade facing the ever-changing world as Rotary opens opportunities.

LaRoy Seaver The Reverend LaRoy Edward Seaver died peacefully on July 6, 2020 at Estes Park Health in Estes Park, Colorado.

He was 99 years old.

LaRoy was born on September 21, 1920, in Omaha, Nebraska while his parents (Arden Edward and Bertha Decker Seaver) were living at Scribner NE. His family moved to Elk City, NE in 1922.

LaRoy graduated high school in Valley NE, and was valedictorian of the class of 1937. After high school graduation, he started working and attending college in Lincoln NE. In 1942 he was drafted, as a conscientious objector to war, into Civilian Public Service. After serving in a Forest Service fire-fighting camp in California and an institution for the mentally handicapped in Delaware, he returned to the University of Nebraska in 1946. In 1943 he married Pauline Roberts of Lewellen NE and together they had five children.

Graduating with high distinction from the University of Nebraska in 1948, he took his family, then including two children, to New York to get his theological training from Union Theological Seminary in New York City and Drew School of Theology In Madison, New Jersey, while at the same time being pastor to Harriman and Southfields Methodists in New York.

They returned to Nebraska in 1953 where LaRoy served as a Methodist

pastor for Exeter/Milligan, Big Springs, Hebron/Belvedere, Wahoo/Ithaca, Omaha Pearl Memorial, and Lincoln Southminster. He also served the NE conference as Director of Ministries. His retirement was in 1987.

Pauline died February 2, 1979 and on December 21, 1981 he married Mary (Stoffel) Newman.

In 1979 he was named by Sun Newspapers as one of five Omahans of the Year for his contributions to his neighborhood. In June of 1991 LaRoy and Mary moved to Estes Park, Colorado where he was active in the United Methodist Church of Estes Park, was an interim Director for 19 months of Crossroads Ministry, and helped bring Habitat for Humanity to the Estes Valley.

LaRoy was preceded in death by his three sisters and one son, David A. Seaver. He is survived by his wife, Mary Seaver of Estes Park, daughters Judi Seaver of Ft. Calhoun NE and Miriam Seaver, sons Mark Seaver (Andrea Sedlak) of Burtonsville M.D., and Tim Seaver (Laura) of Hillsborough N.C., four step-children, six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are deferred to a later date. Memorials may be made to local Methodist Church or Crossroads Ministries of Estes Park.

Beverly Ann (Pierce) Avey Beverly Ann (Pierce) Avey, passed away on Christmas Day, 2019, at her home in Glen Haven, CO. She was born in Omaha, NE to Hubert & Dollie (Simmons) Pierce on 11/12/37. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband: Maynard C. Avey. She is survived by her children: Cher (Hal) Smith, of Lincoln, NE; Steven (Sue) Johnson, of Gretna, NE; & Sandi Johnson, of Glen Haven, CO; grandchildren: Jennie & Jamie Balkovec, Jessica Smith, Jodie (Alex) Wooters, & Cheyenne & Cierra Johnson; great-granddaughter: Hallie Wooters; siblings: Betty Tollander, Barbara Maher, & William (Jean) Pierce; & numerous nieces, nephews & friends.

Growing up in NE, Bev & her sister, Barb, played in the Industrial Basketball League. She loved riding horses, swimming, snow skiing in Colorado, & Ballroom Dancing. She graduated from North High School, in 1955, & attended Creighton University. She coached her daughter’s basketball team & was an avid Husker fan. After the birth of her daughter, Sandi, she devel-

oped the “Parents Group for Disabled Children” at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Omaha. She was a board member for The March of Dimes & helped to pass legislation for the disabled.

After moving to Colorado, she became a board member at Foot Hills Gateway, in Fort Collins. She continued to be the primary caregiver for her daughter, Sandi, until 2016 when Alzheimer’s became too severe to continue as such. Bev’s granddaughter, Jessica, chose to care for both her grandmother & Sandi so that they could spend their remaining time together & with loving family. Bev ended her days surrounded by family & cuddles from dogs.

Stefanie Whannel Stefanie Marie Whannel was born in Manhattan, Kansas on September 25, 1987. Her adoptive parents, Gene and Lisa Whannel were present at the hospital when she was born.

Upon Stefanie and her birth mother’s release from the hospital, there was a service for the immediate family and adoptive parents at her birth mother’s church where her birth mother read a beautiful note of love to transfer her baby to Gene and Lisa.

Stefanie was brought home to Great Bend, Kansas after the service. Stefanie was baptized at the Great Bend Presbyterian Church at a service where nearly all of Gene and Lisa’s family from across the country attended.

In 1988, the Whannel family moved to the Cincinnati suburb of Landen, Ohio. While in Ohio Stef made many lifelong friends. She enjoyed spending time at the nearby Kings Island amusement park where her dad taught her to stand on her tip toes so that she would pass the height restriction and he would have a partner in riding the roller coasters. She enjoyed her Brownie troop, ballet, gymnastics, piano lessons, Sunday school and swimming while in Ohio. She especially enjoyed our family Thanksgiving/Winter celebrations in Ohio where the Ask family would gather to celebrate the winter holidays over a three day period! In 1997, the family moved to Fort Collins Colorado. Stefanie started at Werner Elementary School that fall in the 4th grade.

Stefanie loved making the trips to Iowa to spend time with her Whannel family at the local hardware store in Traer Iowa. Her time with her grandparents and family in Traer was a treasure she fondly remembered.

In Fort Collins Stefanie participated in her church’s youth group, choir at Werner Elementary and other activities. Stefanie’s passion was swimming.

She was a very gifted athlete. She

joined the FAST swim team in Fort Collins.

While swimming for the FAST team she was privileged to have an amazingly talented group of young ladies swimming with her.

Stef traveled to several national swim meets with these young ladies. This group of girls also swam for the Fort Collins High School swim team. During Stef ’s freshman year, she won the 200 yard freestyle event at the conference meet.

At the state meet, the Fort Collins team came close to winning the state championship! It was an exciting experience.

Stefanie was proud of her Native American heritage and made several trips to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota where her birth father is now a pastor and actively involved in the Rosebud Boys and Girls Club.

Stef loved her family and her friends.

She had recently started back to school to get her psychology degree with the hope that she could help people who struggled with mental health and addiction issues as she had. She passed away on March 24, 2020 and is survived by her parents, Gene and Lisa Whannel, her birth parents, Andrea Law and Paul Mitchell, her aunts and uncles: Lynne Rusley, Stuart & Von Whannel, Jay and Toni Whannel, Bernard & Kathy Ask, Marie Anne & Steve Bernhard, Tom and Beth Ask, Susan Ask & Joe Mazza; Brent Law, Dwight Law - cousins: Eric Rusley, Janean Dicari, Jason Rusley, Jay Whannel, Jodi Ask Richard, Kim Ask Peffley, Daniel Bernhard, Christopher Bernhard, Eric Ask and Elayna Ask and her special friend Nate Pitsch. Memorials can be made to Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park or Rosebud Boys and Girls Club, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.
