Diesel Spill On Road Construction Project In RMNP On Monday night, a petroleum spill occurred in a section of an ongoing road construction project in Rocky Mountain National Park on US 36 inside Rocky Mountain National Park. The work is taking place on a 3-mile section of US 36, just west of Bear Lake Road junction to east of Deer Ridge Junction. The road is closed nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. Because of the spill this section of road inside the park remains closed. It is unknown when this section of road will reopen.

Park visitors wishing to access Trail Ridge Road should use the Fall River Entrance on US 34.

The contractor on the project notified park officials and hazmat cleanup began early this morning.

Contaminated soil will be removed in accordance with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Environmental Protection Agency procedures.

No one was injured when the spill occurred. As is standard protocol, the cause of the spill is being investigated.

Let’s Anticipate The Way Forward “I’m done with 2020” is an all-to-frequent comment I’m reading on Facebook and hearing in conversations with friends and colleagues. I appreciate why people are writing and saying they’re done. What with Covid-19, and now smoke from wildfires disrupting our lives I too, want to move on. Leave the energy sapping summer days of uncertainty behind. Jettisoning the new norm that’s dampening enthusiasm and darkening minds. Fast forward to better times for you and me.

If I could do this, I would. Since I can’t, here are four things that I’m doing.

First, I’m trusting the capacity of the government of Estes Park to anticipate the future and by so doing laying the groundwork for better days for people here. My trust comes from a belief that such capacity resides in the processes, employees, and elected officials put in place by the people of Estes. The interaction of which annually produces a strategic plan (including vision, mission, goal statements) and a budget plan. The design and implementation of both anticipate future needs for preserving, protecting and advancing the welfare and health of our community.

Second, I’m supporting the town staff who manage the processes set forth in both plans and are responsible for gathering the necessary data that guide implementation of each.

Third, I’m listening to you and looking for novel ideas and opportunities.

Sounds good you say, but how do things work? Well, consider Estes’ capacity to anticipate Covid-19 cases. For the most part it involves town administrator Travis Machalek being in regular contact

with Larimer County Health Department and utilizing their data to determine the best health and safety practices for folks here.

Adding wastewater testing to the town’s data gathering repertoire significantly increases its capacity for anticipating Covid-19 challenges. The recently added data point involves collecting samples at the Town of Estes Park and Upper Thompson sewage treatment plants, transporting samples to Colorado State University for testing, then using resulting data to form a trend line of Covid-19 amounts that document changes as visitors come and go. A process that helps the town and its townspeople anticipate potential spikes and prevent spread of the virus. A heartfelt thanks to Cathy Ochs, an Estes resident, for making us aware of this service and helping the town become one of 18 other Front Range communities included in the testing effort.

Fourth, I’m doubling down on efforts to brighten people’s lives by revving up my expressions of care, concern, and kindness. For me this involves seeking encouragement in little things. For instance, noting that wearing a mask helps prevent spread of Covid-19 and possibly lung damage from wildfire smoke. Or, making a favorite fall lunch, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, in August for goodness sake!

Please know that your town staff, trustees and I continue to anticipate a time beyond done with 2020. Together, with your help we’ll get there. Between now and then, join me in seeking the good and praising it.

Estes Park Museum Online Book Program: Local Lodges Then & Now On Friday, September 11, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. join authors and photographers, Dr. James Pickering, Derek Fortini, and Mic Clinger via Zoom as they discuss their book, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park: Then and Now, Revised Edition. This program will highlight a number of historic sites/buildings in the Estes Park region, with an emphasis on local lodges.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On August 20 at 11:28 a.m. police arrived at a motor vehicle accident in the 400 block of E. Wonderview Ave. where they arrested a 62 year old female driver of a vehicle who was involved in a hit and run. She was charged with DUI, DUI per se and driving while revoked.

On August 23 at 9:15 p.m. police were called to the 400 block of Elm Ave. where they arrested a 51 year old male from Estes Park who was wanted on two warrants out of the Boulder County Sheriff ’s office for violation of a permanent protection order times two and violation of a no contact order. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of August 16, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 16 calls for service. This included:

Estes Park Duck Race To Be Live Streamed September 19 By: Rita DuChateau, Rotary Club of Estes Park In an unusual year, the Estes Park Duck Race promises to be unusual, too. This year’s event on Saturday, Sept. 19 will not take place in the familiar venues, but will deliver all the excitement that comes with a traditional race. Instead of gathering at Nicky’s, Riverside Plaza or The Wheel Bar, all that Duck Race fans need to do is adopt their ducks online at epduckrace.org and then tune in to Channel 8The Rocky Mountain Channel or YouTube to view a virtual race proDUCKtion. The Rocky Mountain Channel’s free app can be downloaded at the App Store or Google Play. All broadcast links will be available at epduckrace.org.

The Duck Race Committee is pleased to announce a partnership with Nick Mollé Productions and The Rocky Mountain Channel, which will bring the virtual race to life on Sept. 19. The broadcast will begin at 11 a.m. with a Pre-Flight Show featuring interviews, clips from historic footage, and appearances by mascot Lucky Duck and ‘Big Duck’ Karen Thompson, the leader of the 2020 flock.

Sponsors of the race will be recognized, and Duck Adoptions will be encouraged.

At 12:40 p.m., the broadcast will go live from the studios of Channel 8 with several socially-distanced presenters guided

by Mollé and Production Manager Sean Doherty. At 1 p.m. sharp, the time of the traditional drop of thousands of little yellow plastic ducks into the Fall River, the broadcast will instead focus on an exciting, live reveal of the top prize winners.

Thompson has dubbed this the Tail Spin.

Nick Mollé is the award-winning producer or several internationally acclaimed films, the owner of Channel 8The Rocky Mountain Channel and an avid Duck Race fan. A former member of the Rotary Club of Estes Park, Mollé has been a Major Sponsor of the race for many years. In addition, Duck Race fan favorite Kris Hazelton will serve as emcee. Hazelton is the owner of the Estes Park News with her husband Gary Hazelton and a Major Sponsor for many years.

Travel prizes, which have expiration dates well into 2022, include extras that vary between resorts. Delaware North, the lodging and concession corporation that includes the Ridgeline Hotel in Estes Park, generously donated the travel prizes.

Duck Adopters also will have the chance to win hundreds of other prizes valued at $20 and up. This year the merchants were not asked to donate prizes, but instead were given the option of having prizes, called Duck Bucks, provided by the Duck Race Committee and many donors. Duck Bucks are redeemable at various local businesses; winners will be notified by email.

The new Merchant Prize format this year was to offer support to local businesses that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

Thompson is anticipating a great event. “What a year!

What an exciting Duck Race this will be! I’m thrilled that our committee has ‘flown in formation’ throughout many challenges this year and has planned a virtual Duck Race that will help to ‘feather the nests’ of our 67 Participating Organizations during this difficult time for nonprofits,” she said.

The Homestead Reclaimed: Program At The Baldpate Inn The Baldpate Inn is honored to announce a fascinating Summer Enchanted Evening on Wednesday, September 2nd at 7 p.m. in the Baldpate Key Room and online at the Adam Thomas Baldpate Inn YouTube Channel for our talk.

Architectural historian Adam Thomas is an assistant teaching professor in the History Department at Colorado State University. A native of western Pennsylvania, Dr. Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in history from Colorado State University. In 2002, Dr. Thomas founded Historitecture, an Estes Park-based architectural history consulting firm. Since that time, Dr. Thomas has worked on numerous architectural history and public history projects across Colorado, ranging from individual property surveys to major neighborhood histories and documentaries. Dr. Thomas earned his doctorate in history from Johns Hopkins University in 2016, and he specializes in the history of race, architecture, and landscapes in the American southwest.

Beginning in the late 1950s, a phenomenon swept Rocky Mountain National

Park that upended more than a century of American land policy and attitudes: longtime large-scale inholders willingly sold their private property back to the federal government, for the perpetual enjoyment of all. At the time, these transactions represented a radical departure from previous generation, and suggest just how quickly and fundamentally the burgeoning environmental movement had altered American perceptions of conservation, wilderness, and the mission of the National Parks, while redefining notions of the public good. Dr. Thomas will look at this profound shift through case-study histories of two former guest ranches whose names still endure on the west side of RMNP: Green Mountain Ranch and Onahu Ranch.

The Historic Stanley Home Foundation Thanks Estes Park

The Stanley Home Foundation is thrilled with the many stunning furniture and accessory pieces that the people of Estes Park have so generously donated to bring the F. O. and Flora Stanley house back to its original 1904 state.

A few weeks ago, the Stanley Steamer Co. donated all the cleaning of the beautiful hardwood floors and they are truly lovely.

We are now in the process of placing the furniture in the individual rooms, and hope to obtain grants to do the repairs needed in each room. We are still needing a few items. Most people undergo the challenging experience of relocating at some point in their lives. I’ve moved nine times, including when I was too young to remember—and not including the boomerang moves back into my parents’ house for three summer months each year during college.

The stress of moving is caused by both physical and mental demands. It involves deciding what to take, packing it, loading it onto a truck, and then unloading it at the destination, unpacking it, and determining where to put it all. It’s nobody’s favorite thing to do.

When moving from Omaha to Estes Park 20 years ago, we hired professional packers and movers to do the job. That made it easy to transport things we didn’t even know we had. We moved everything! (Fortunately our new home already had a kitchen sink or we would have moved that too.) As I unpacked I came upon a very big, very light box and was surprised when I opened it to discover we had moved a box of empty boxes.

That’s when I knew I had a problem and there was no Box-Hoarders Anonymous that could help. I was on my own to figure out life’s big question: What is the meaning of The Box? Boxes are the measure of all things.

I think therefore I have boxes.

Life is a box.

Moving-boxes are great to have on hand when you need to make a donation to the thrift store. It’s hard to give away a half-full box so I end up going from room to room trying to find things I don’t need anymore just to fill the box.

That’s good for everybody. On the other hand, moving-boxes take up a lot of room, even when they’ve been broken down and folded up, so keeping them is a pain in the patootie. Easy solution: A grocery store can serve as a personal storage unit. Their boxes are free and are there when you need them. Still, I keep a few on hand (few being a relative term) —to store all the other boxes in.

I have Amazon boxes, stationery boxes, Postal Service boxes and kitchen appliance boxes. But most of all, I have shoe boxes. They are sturdy so they can withstand the abuse that comes from being shipped via the US Postal Service. (The way things are going, that may not be a concern for much longer.) Some people keep shoe boxes to store shoes in. That’s an organizational concept beyond my grasp. But shoe boxes can be useful for other things. Into the laundry room corner they go.

Ever since the invention of home computers we’ve been told to hang onto their

boxes. What for? No one really knows. But we’re all doing it. It’s not just me. I suppose I keep computer boxes for when I upgrade and want to sell the old machine. But that’s ridiculous. I hang onto my computers so long they develop dementia. Nobody would ever buy one.

Their boxes? They should be used in the garden; cardboard is a good weed barrier.

I used to keep jewelry boxes. But most jewelry comes in its own box (their own box? Is the word jewelry singular or plural?). Nobody wants to open a gift of jewelry in a used box. It sends the wrong message. So those lovely, sometimes velvety boxes simply multiply in the storeroom, hidden away inside other boxes (See, I told you shoe boxes are good for something). As bad as my box hoarding is, I am able to free myself from jewelry boxes.

Truly, my collection of boxes in every shape and size has come in handy. I always have the one I need. There comes a rare occasion however, when I decide it’s time to clean shop. I get out all the boxes, decide which ones are really worth keeping, and break down the rest for the recycle bin. Inevitably, the next week I can’t find that one perfect box because I just got rid of it.

My favorites are the oldies but goodies that have withstood the test of time. We have a Miller & Paine box with its distinctive baby blue lid that has been around for more than 30 years (Nebraska’s Miller & Paine department store was founded in 1898 and sold in 1988).

We’ve used that box again and again and it is still holding its shape quite nicely.

Just this week we rediscovered a Marshall Field’s box with a “A gift from Marshall Field & Company” sticker inside dated 11/23/73. (The sticker says, “This is your identification sticker. Do not remove.” It’s been almost 50 years and that sticker has not been removed. We wouldn’t want to lose our identification!)

My family moved from Chicago to Lincoln in December 1973 so this box most likely held a going away gift. The corners are intact, there are no dents or tears, the logo tissue paper is still inside. The box is a keeper.

Things have changed over the years however. People don’t use boxes today like they did in the past, thanks to a newcomer—the gift bag. What to do?

Collect them—and store them in a box.

“A New Earth”: Book Club Begins September 12 “Being Awareness” is the title of a book discussion series being hosted by the Estes Valley Library and Salud Family Health Centers. The next featured book is “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. For those who sign up, a complimentary copy of the book is now available to read in advance.

The 3-part discussion takes place on Saturday mornings this fall: September 12, October 10 and November 14, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the library.

Participants are asked to attend all three sessions, which take place on Zoom.

In “A New Earth”, Tolle believes that one’s attachment to the ego creates the

dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness. He seeks to show readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.

O. Stanley's twin brother built a complex of cottages for his family in the early 1900s.

Squirrel Island, so called because its outline resembles a squirrel on its haunches, is the summer home of 100 ultra-wealthy families, each of whom hold stock (which entitles them to property)

Current Squirrel Island residents include Paul Tagliabue, former commissioner of the National Football League.

Family lore is that F. E. Stanley visited his twin in Estes Park only once, and didn't much care for the area. At the time of his visit, Estes Park certainly wouldn't have been as exclusive as Squirrel Island, which required residents to, among other things, refrain from roller skating, or face a fine and possible imprisonment. We will examine contemporary newspaper accounts to see if F. O. Stanley ever returned the favor, and visited his brother or, after his brother's death, his nieces on Squirrel Island.

More recently, Squirrel Island has come under attack for discrimination against Native Americans, which raises the thorny issue of exactly who was excluded by its exclusivity.

I told y’all that the days of summer are fast slipping by. Here it is, the last Friday of August. The pines are beginning to have some of their needles brown, the flowers of summer are wilting and the few hummers left are starting to think of leaving. I have a number of planted pots of flowers on my deck and I so enjoy my “personal” hummingbirds that frequent them. I will miss them.

I will not miss the smoke that has plagued us from the distant fires. I think of those people suffering from them and the brave firefighters who are relentlessly fighting the blazes. We so far, have been spared any such threats, only the misery of the smoke.

Theresa and Ed (daughter, and sonin-law), came for a weeks visit to escape the heat of Houston and a family visit. I got a pass for RMNP and we drove over to Granby. We could see the billows of smoke from afar and occasionally the blaze of the fire.

During their stay, I got a call from my son Chris. “Mom I remember how you used to cook chicken and biscuits in the oven. Tell me how to do that.” With that, Theresa chimed in, “Oh, I remember those biscuits as well.” Funny about childhood memories.

When we lived in Denver, I would get the chicken ready to cook and place it

in the oven. Off to church (5 p.m. mass) we would go. On our return I would uncover the chicken and drop the biscuits in and have dinner on the table in less than 20 minutes by the time we returned. It was such a simple dish!

Oven Baked Chicken and Biscuits 1 whole chicken, divided into pieces 1/2 stick butter Coating and Seasonings for chicken: 1 1/2 tsp paprika 1 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp black pepper ½ tsp granulated garlic 2/3 cup Bisquick Original Biscuits made from Bisquick mix.

Heat oven to 425. Melt butter in 13x9 baking pan in oven. Meanwhile, shake chicken in paper bag with the coating.

Place chicken in hot butter, skin side down. Tightly cover with foil and bake about 35-40 minutes. Uncover and turn chicken over, making room for the biscuits. Drop biscuit mix by tablespoons into the pan juices. A delicious result! I hope you enjoy our family dish.

Utilize electric fencing, unwelcome mats and scent deterrents like ammonia to teach bears that your property is not bear-friendly.

If a bear enters your home, open doors and windows and ensure it can leave the same way it got in. Don’t approach the bear or block escape routes.

Never approach a bear. If a bear won’t leave, call your local CPW office. If a bear presents an immediate threat to human safety, call 911.

One of Pat’s favorite childhood memories is waiting for F.O. Stanley to come to the grocery store. She would meet him outside on his shopping day and he would give her a nickel. Pat got her first job at the age of 12, dusting shelves at Baird’s Gifts downtown. Pat graduated from Estes Park High School in 1948 and three years later married her high school sweet-heart, George Nytes. Pat and George enjoyed 66 years together, raising Patricia Nytes is a 3rd generation Estes their family in Estes Park and enjoying Park native and will celebrate her 90th multiple friendships along the way. Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (RJ) Seeks Community Feedback Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (RJ) is seeking community feedback on its community, school- and justicebased programming. “We want to learn from our community,� stated RJ Manager & Executive Director Denise Lord.�Many have had opportunities to engage in RJ programming, while others have not.

We'd like to hear about the ways that RJ has met and could better meet our community's needs. Whether you've heard about RJ programming, have participated directly, supported a school-aged youth's engagement, or are entirely new to the concept, we'd like to hear from you.�

Prior experience with or knowledge of RJ is not required to complete the survey. All responses are anonymous and confidential. Platte River IRP Deliberations To Resume Public input to be taken digitally, virtually Platte River Power Authority will soon resume deliberations with its board of directors and take more public input concerning its 2020 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).

Platte River suspended the IRP process on April 1 due to a statewide outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and subsequent lockdown of business and public activity. The public power provider requested and received a filing extension from the Western Area Power Administration and planned to resume the public process once public gatherings were allowed.

Despite ongoing issues with the pandemic, Platte River's leadership, with the concurrence of the board, determined the IRP process may resume with all board meeting deliberations made open to the public. The public will have the opportunity to listen to board discussions and provide further input using online video meeting capabilities.

“When we initially paused the IRP process, we weren't sure how long the pandemic would last,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River. “It's important for us to continue moving forward with our resource plan and now that we've had time to adapt through technology to include public input, we're excited to reengage with our board and our

owner communities.”

Public input to the board and deliberations among board members will be conducted virtually with meeting information made available on Platte River's website in the days leading up to each board meeting. A phone number will be designated for anyone choosing to call into the meeting.

The IRP process will resume during the Aug. 27 board meeting at which Platte River staff will present board members with a draft IRP document and a recommended path to move toward achieving the Resource Diversification Policy goals. The policy calls for achieving a 100% noncarbon energy mix by 2030 provided key industry milestones can be achieved. At the beginning of the board meeting, anyone residing in Platte River's four owner communities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont or Loveland will be invited to provide comments directly to board members.

“Making a portfolio recommendation is the next step of many steps we need to take on our path toward a noncarbon energy future,” added Frisbie.

OUT OF THE DUNGEON OF SELF “The love of our neighbor is the only door out of the dungeon of self”. So wrote George MacDonald many years ago. Self-concern is a prison indeed. The Bible tells of a young man who had much going for him, but felt he was missing something, so he came to Jesus with a question, “What do I still lack in order to gain eternal life?” Jesus loved him, we are told, and told him that he, basically, needed to get rid of his ‘selfish things’ and come follow Him. Unfortunately the man was ‘imprisoned’ in the ‘dungeon of self’ and wouldn’t ‘escape’ in order to accept ‘true freedom’ in Christ…and eternal life.

Self-concern is a prison indeed. The more we think about ourselves, our needs, and our desires the more imprisoned we become and this is certainly a time that many show that. For example, wearing masks, experts tell us, are more for the well-being of others, than for our own protection from the virus. As a result, almost daily we hear about people who refuse to wear their mask. “It doesn’t help me!” they say. That same selfish attitude is manifested in the actions of others during a time of protests, vandalism, demands being made of the political, law enforcement, and other agencies.

But, enough about ‘them’. We need to be examining ourselves and our attitudes toward ‘self’ and how we relate to others. Lloyd John Oglivie put it like this: “The door to the prison of our own making must be thrown open to the world filled with people who need us. A bad mood is dispelled when we get involved in listening to others and helping them solve the problems they are facing.” We usually feel badly about our own situations until we are confronted with what others are going through.

Sadly, one of the worst aspects of the pandemic is the ‘isolation’ that is expected of all of us. It is hard for us to find areas and situations where we can sit down with others, as we did before, so how do we get out of our ‘prison of self’ and help others escape from theirs. First of all, we must ‘think’ of others, taking time to mentally compile a list of people going through struggles we are aware of. A second thing we can do is to hold these people up to God in prayer. This may be difficult to some because of their relationship with God. I visited a man some years ago who was nearing the end of his ‘journey’. As I bent over him, not sure whether he was sleeping or already ‘gone’, lying there with his eyes closed, he whispered softly, “Are you on ‘speakin terms’ with the Lord?”…and we ‘spoke to our Lord’ together. For many this may be a problem. So, get on ‘speakin terms’ with the Lord and pray for those you know who are hurting. Thirdly, there are things we can do to let them know that we’ve exited our ‘dungeon of self’, and are there for them: call them or write them a letter to let them know we are thinking of them, giving them words of encouragement.

Two things will always occur: joy brought to them and joy we receive, from our caring effort and from the Lord for that caring effort.

The reason is that we were created to share. A small verse I heard years ago has impacted the ministry I chose and the way I like to ‘operate’. The author said: “I took a day to search for God. I climbed the highest steeple. But God declared, ‘Go down again, I live among the people.”

In many religious settings people are ‘climbing steeples’. It is time for us to ‘escape our self-imposed dungeons of self’ and reach out to ‘the people’. We were created to share. Happiness is found in ‘interdependence’ not ‘independence’.

Be aware that this ‘escape’ will be a gradual thing. A popular hymn describes this ‘gradual’ transition. It begins: ‘All of self…none of Thee’; then, ‘Some of self…some of Thee’; to ‘Less of self…more of Thee’; and, finally, ‘None of self…all of Thee’. This same gradual progression will occur as we escape our ‘dungeon’ in our serving of others.

YMCA Offers Fall Childcare

YMCA of the Rockies will facilitate a limited-capacity camp session at the Estes Park Center for children of the Estes Valley August 31 – October 9.

Children ages 5-13 will participate in camp activities, while also doing their schoolwork remotely. With more structure than traditional summer day camp, children will receive help with their schoolwork while also playing outside, doing crafts, climbing, hiking, playing sports, and more. YMCA of the Rockies follows strict health and

sanitization policies including mask wearing, social distancing, frequent hand sanitizing, and as much time outdoors as possible. Scholarships are available. Cost is $40 per day; hours are 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Please pack a lunch, clothing layers, a water bottle, and any schoolwork. Watch And Enjoy The Rut In Safety!

The annual elk rut has just begun and the bull elk are busy bugling, gathering their harems of females and challenging one another for breeding rights.

The elk are amazing and wonderous animals that are fun to watch but remember, these are wild animals competing for dominance and the bulls are especially "pumped-up" at this

time of year.

Avoid potential accident, injury or death by always viewing from a safe distance. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears "jumpy," you are way too close. Avoid eye contact and back away. Raise your arms to make yourself look larger. For photographers, a good rule of thumb is "give them room, use your zoom.� Keep you dog leashed and quiet. Do not allow them to bark, lunge

at or chase wildlife. Elk view your dog as a predator.

Never block traffic. "Elk jams" are a danger to everyone - blocking traffic creates all kinds of potentially dangerous situations. Be sure to pull completely off the roadway, out of the way of through traffic.

Never get between two bull elk. Situations can change very rapidly during the rut and you never want to be caught in between two rival animals or a bull and

his harem.

Don't ignore the cows, they can still be dangerous, any time of year, not just during calving season.

Enjoy watching the rut but please remember - elk are wild animals. Be aware and be respectful. View quietly from a safe distance. Never attempt to touch or feed wildlife, it's dangerous and illegal. There's a reason it's called wildlife.

Ollie is an adorable 4-5 year old lab mix. He is 44 pounds and enjoys rolling in the grass, getting belly rubs and going for rides. Ollie walks very nicely on a leash. received a 911 call about a possible situation on top of Kruger Rock with the flashing light. Since there were no park rangers available in the area, Deputy Garland who was covering the whole territory outside of Estes Park property decided he needed to check. He drove into Hermit Park and hiked halfway up to the trail head, which is about a one hour, one way trip up before he met up with us.

Once he found out we were okay, he radioed dispatch to let them know there was three of us plus a dog and we were ok and let search and rescue know they could cancel. He told us he was very glad we were all safe. He visited with us on the hike down the mountain.

We thanked him and bought a $50 Smokin' Dave's gift card along with a thank you card with our picture. With everything currently going on in the country right now, especially with police in the spotlight, we wanted to share this good news story with you. We appreciate his service and dedication. Deputies and officers like him need to be recognized more often.

It takes over large expanses, especially in meadows, rangeland, pastures, and yards. Leafy Spurge is toxic to horses, cattle, and people, and its milky latex sap is irritating or dam� aging to eyes and skin, and may cause blisters. Its small flowers are surrounded by a pair of yellow�green 1/2" heart�shaped bracts which look like petals. Stems are 1' � 3' tall with numerous narrow leaves and clusters of flowers at the ends. Leafy Spurge reproduces by seeds and deep roots that can spread 15'. To manage: Avoid contact with caustic sap � wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection; cut and bag flowers and seeds. Mowing can be useful to deplete roots and herbicides can be eective. All methods must be repeated for several years.

We can all see, smell, and taste the signs of wildfires that are around us.

Unfortunately, a common result of dry weather, unwanted lightning strikes and at times automobile or humancaused. Here in Colorado wildfires can occur any time of the year but are more prevalent during the summer and fall with August being the peak of the season. With this year’s warmer and drier than average weather conditions, along with the late arrival of the monsoonal rains, wildfire risks will remain significant as we move into the cooler fall days. Fire is a natural/necessary ecological process, but when we choose to live in that ecosystem, we need to do the best we can to prevent harm. Looking around your home, are you ready?

Many articles have been written recently by our Estes Valley Fire Protection District regarding preparedness.

Creating defensible space around your home may not stop wildfires from destruction, but it will help to slow the fire down to give you time to retreat from the threat and firefighters a chance to address the fire. So what can you do to be ready for any wildfire

threat? Observe your surroundings and begin to remove or relocate fuels that would support flames that would approach your home. Fuels such as trees, pine needles, pine cones, leaves, woodpiles, etc. Check-lists and other information about how you can improve your wildland-urban interface (WUI), a zone of transition between wildland and human development, can be found at www.estesvalleyfire.org/ living-in-the-wui.

The Estes Valley Watershed Coalition has joined efforts to help educate our Estes Valley community about the dangers of wildfires and are identifying fire mitigation projects with various agencies such as the Northern Water, the US Forest Service, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District and the Colorado State Forest Service. There have been a number of colorful characters in our family’s history, but my great-grandmother Rachel Hanson Donahue will always be my favorite. She was an opinionated and feisty pioneer woman who later in life wasn’t afraid to give you an aggressive stab with her cane if she felt you were out of line.

Rachel left her family and launched out on her own in a covered wagon to travel from Canada to South Dakota in the late 1800s. She settled in the tiny town of Oacoma on the west bank of the Missouri River and went to work in a local saloon. As the story goes, it was there that she would climb out on the roof through a window in her bedroom to meet with the man who would eventually become her husband—Thomas Donahue. There’s no doubt that my great-grandfather was a true cowboy through and through. He was a rather handsome, lanky man from Iowa who knew nothing other than hard work his entire life. He and Rachel eventually homesteaded and raised four children on their small South Dakota ranch.

There wasn’t another house in sight and the property sat next to “Al’s Oasis,” even then a popular tourist stop along the interstate near Chamberlain.

News From The Art Center Of Estes Park PRESENT EXHIBIT: “It’s all About The Details”, featuring the Wood Carving, Wood Burning and Gourd Art by Jim Sneary.

There is also a special Section set aside as a Theme Wall, which features art on a specific interest that is

While it existed prior to the “War to End All Wars,” plastic was not really at the forefront until after WWII. But that plastic had flaws. Nevertheless, porcelain ceramic was often replaced

by Bakelite, in electrical wiring and other uses. It was lighter than glass. It was cheaper. It was shatterproof! As formulas improved, plastics gained in transparency and would no longer “melt” in the sunshine. Molding handles and other commonly milled products saved on production cost, thereby making products more affordable. Perhaps the most exciting discovery was the new plastic “nylon” cloth. Less expensive than silk, it could be laundered at home and did not require ironing. Plastic was hailed as a miracle!

Plastics still have their uses. They are indispensable in the medical field; even though some of those are, currently, a single-use solution where developing safe recyclability would be an advantageous breakthrough. Plastic water pipes are an immense improvement over rust susceptible or leaded metal where corrosion can affect the quality of the drinking water.

Also an excellent conduit for electrical wires. Tarpaulin fabrics are considerably lighter than canvas, easier to waterproof, and come in bright vibrant colors. Plastic encasement, not an electrical conduit, protects our electronic gadgets as no other material can, but there is no reason to send this indestructible material to the landfill.

Then – the plastics industry experienced a change in direction when they determined that “The future of plastics is in the trashcan.” While the pursuant concentration on producing packaging and products for shortterm use and immediate disposal does create higher sales volume and profit, the cost for disposal of a nondestructible product – tips those scales. We now know that plastic contaminates our oceans, our lakes, and our waterways, but the most recent studies find that minute plastic particles also fall from the skies and permeate the air that we breathe. We, as a populace, have become addicted to convenience. We spend hard-earned cash on throwaway items that we use for 20 seconds and toss “out.” Remember, we are a democracy. What you do, others have the right to do equally. When you think … “just this once” … multiply that by the population of the Estes Valley, about 6,000, or the population of the USA, or the world.

ter and the EP-LWV Community Recycling Committee is hosting an event featuring the documentary film, “The Story of Plastic” www.thestoryofplastic.org and a follow-up discussion (Zoom, Sept 14).

Currently, the cost of plastic disposal is born by the user (economic) and, ecologically, by society as a whole. For each individual to attempt to solve this dilemma independently for every separate product he or she uses – is overwhelming. A far more efficient, more economical method is for product manufacturers to find a solution and offer it to the public. Examples: 1) Many retail stores, primarily grocers, have joined a coalition that collects plastic film (from shopping bags to those used for food storage and dry cleaning).

2) Our Estes Planet Partners have each found an appropriate contribution. Find a list at www.EstesRecycles.org 3) Most carton companies, belong to the Carton Council which invests in research and development of recycling opportunities and markets for the resultant recycled material. You can check it out at: www.recyclecartons.com. If other industries would form a similar pact, we could “rescue” many more items from the landfill. Gloria Cohen of Larimer County has confirmed that we can recycle Tetra Paks, a specialized carton that melds paper, plastic, and aluminum, at the Residential Recycling Center – in single-stream.

We know that plastic is recyclable, right? It is not that simple. After restrictions on resin, size, color shape, and product contamination (like food), less than 10% of petroleum based plastics are actually recycled.

The market for recycled products must cover the cost of the recycling.

Today, most manufacturers designate the plastic resin with a triangular numeral. Numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5 are readily recyclable in most communities including Estes Park.

Numbers 3 and 6 are recyclable, but lack the market demand to make them sufficiently profitable. And #7, for the most part, is not recyclable. (#7 PLA is compostable, but only in industrial composting facilities.

Here in the Estes Valley, we do not, yet, have public access to composting.) It is best not to purchase #3, #5, or #7, or allow them into our space.

The same goes for any plastic without a designated number. When in doubt, do without.

If we ignore the effects of our lifestyle on tomorrow’s world, what will our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren face as a result?

Students Improve With Tutoring Believing education unlocks dreams, we support students of all ages inspiring a lifelong love of learning.

Founded in 1998 as an innovative skill-building center for learners of all ages, the Estes Park Learning Place became a charitable non-profit organization in February 2003 and successfully serves the greater Estes Valley community.

The Estes Park Learning Place provides: ● One-on-one tutoring in all subject areas- online and face-to-facefor K-12 and adults ● GED and HiSet preparation and testing ● ACT/SAT/GRE/MCAT Preparation ● Test Proctoring for Exams with Colleges and Universities when taking on-line classes Although our face-to-face tutoring sessions were curtailed in mid-March due to COVID19, we are planning to resume this format of tutoring in September 2020. Online tutoring, which has been very successful will continue as well. We were fortunate to receive a EPNRC COVID19 Relief grant and a generous donation from an individual in the community to purchase PPE to safely open. All face-to-face tutoring will require learners to wear a faceshield, provided by The Learning Place and a plexi-glass barrier will be in each tutoring classroom. A detailed Protocol for Learners is posted on our website for families to review.

Costs are affordable by our discounting all students 50% of the actual cost of one-on-one tutoring and then providing further discounts and financial assistance. We are supported by individual donors, business sponsors and local, regional and national grants.

This need-based scholarship program is an integral part of The Learning Place’s ability to effectively serve the community. The goal of this program is to never let someone’s financial situation keep him/her from reaching his/her full potential.

The Learning Place tutors are also involved at the Estes Park Schools with tutoring. We will be supporting the students at the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club while involved in Cloud School this fall. In addition, we will continue to support High School students in partnership with the High School.

Each month in the winter and spring, we sponsor Family Café, where families join us for a free dinner and then engage in interactive learning and literacy activities together as a Family. We hope these will be able to resume in a safe way this year.

We partner with the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) of Larimer County to provide information on Financial Aid, Admissions applications for colleges and vocational programs and career exploration. The EOC visits each month with students and families at the Learning Place or virtually online.

We have partnerships as well with the Children’s Speech and Reading Center and with SWAP, the Student To Work Alliance Program, from the High School.

Fall Current Affairs Programs And The Power Of Conversation By: Diana Laughlin, Civic Engagement Librarian

“Conversation is a meeting of minds with different memories and habits.

When minds meet, they don’t just exchange facts: they transform them, reshape them, draw different implications from them, engage in new trains of thought. Conversation doesn’t just shuffle the cards: it creates new cards.”

Illuminating conversations, like those described above by author Theodore Zeldin, are an important aspiration of the library’s current affairs programs.

To have the best conversations, we seek and welcome all voices and perspectives.

While not advocating any particular stance, the Library provides opportunities to discuss the challenging and complex issues of our day – often with a book as the starting place, because books provide a springboard into those transformative discussions.

This fall, the library has an exciting series of current affairs programs. We hope you’ll join these conversations.

Since the Library draws upon the community in developing programs and actively partners with other agencies, our upcoming programs focus on topics of anti-racism and conflict resolution, facilitated by two community partners.

Estes Valley Crisis Advocates is partnering for a September book discussion of the bestseller “Me and White Supremacy.” The book is based upon an Instagram challenge, in which nearly 100,000 participants self-analyzed day-to-day racist behaviors in their lives, tendencies of which they were previously unaware.

The two-part Zoom discussion happens Monday, September 21 and 28, and participants may choose either the 10:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. time slot.

2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, have formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” As a part of the festivities, we plan to collect stories about Estes Valley women in the form of paragraphs. Submission period: now to August 26. Maximum length: 200 words, A story about any woman with a connection to Estes Park. These paragraphs will be collected by the Estes Valley Library. They will then appear in the local newspapers and 100 will be chosen to be published as a booklet for November release.

The Story Of Margaret Houston By:Jean McGuire

Margaret Houston, an Estes Park native, was born October 28, 1915, the same year Rocky Mountain National Park was formed. Her parents, Walter and Winnie Baldridge, crossed the prairie in a covered wagon from Oklahoma, landing first in Denver, then settled in Estes Park where her father worked for F. O. Stanley.

Margaret was the first women elected to the Estes Park Board of Trustees, breaking the 61-year male dominance of the board known at the time as the “good old boys club.”

She grew up in Estes Park when the streets were dirt, the sidewalks were wood-planked, horse stables dominated the main street, and the town’s only schoolhouse had less than a half dozen students.

During the summers, she worked for the telephone company, where her task was to take messages to outlying residences so they could return calls from one of the few phones in town.

After pursuing her education at Col-

orado State University and Barnes Business College, Margaret married Lawrence Goreski and moved to Denver in 1932. When her husband was killed in World War II, she and her daughter returned to Estes Park.

She waited tables at the Hupp Hotel restaurant and as an employee for the town, she had the privilege of sounding the siren to mark V-J Day. She also worked for the Post Office and was secretary for the then newly formed Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Recreation District. In 1965 she married Josh Houston and they purchased the Roundup Grocery. They also operated a sporting goods store and a liquor store.

In 1976 with the approach of the town board elections, Margaret was encouraged to run by fellow members of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Margaret is quoted as saying her time in municipal service was rewarding and enjoyable. Her best advice: “Never look back; do a job to the best of your ability; be honest."

The Story Of Hildred Griffith Hildred Griffith began spending summers in Estes Valley as an infant in 1898 with her mother and two older sisters. They stayed in a tent cabin on the McCreary Ranch property. They came every summer from Indiana, and continued after the family moved to Loveland. They made the two-day journey from Loveland by horse drawn wagon, spending the night at the Forks Hotel in Drake.

Later they made the trip from Loveland by motor car; still a slow trek since someone had to get out of the car and walk around blind curves to see if an auto was coming from the other direction.

In the 1930’s she returned to Estes full time as a single mother with two teenage daughters. She married John Griffith, of the Griffith Lumber family.

He died a few years later leaving her with several pieces of property. One of these was on Virginia Drive where she started Griffith Cottages and Rooms.

During 1950’s and 60’s, 12 to 15 college aged girls lived in her house while they worked summer jobs in town. She retired from cottage and rooming business in 1966, but continued to be active in Estes real estate as well as many social clubs and charities. She passed away in 1977 at age 80.

The Story Of Amy Hamrick And Kind Coffee By:Steve Mitchell

Amy Hamrick’s Kind Coffee is a gathering place with a heart. When floodwaters shut the coffee shop’s doors in September 2013, Amy worked three months to repair and open her business, and then made a coffee called Flood Mud that poked fun at the flood and helped those desperately in need. Kind Coffee donated 25 percent of Flood Mud sales, or $10,000, to the Town of Estes Park Flood Relief Fund. Because of this generous act and many more, the Town of Estes Park awarded Amy and Kind Coffee the Philanthropic Businessperson of the Year in November 2014.

Amy first fell in love with Estes Park and the mountains when she visited her uncle Dick Orleans in 1996. After graduating with a degree in Outdoor Education from the University of North Carolina, Amy returned and worked at Estes Park Coffee located in Ed’s Cantina. Soon people were asking for organic, fair trade coffee, so Amy took over the wholesale operation and renamed it Kind Coffee to better reflect her mission statement: To promote the sustainability of our environment through the sale of certified organic and fairly traded coffees. Amy and her husband Dave, who works for the Forest Service, live and play in Estes Park.

Marvin C. Kaiser Marvin C. Kaiser, a longtime resident of Joliet, passed away at the age of 64 on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at St. Joseph Medical Center.

Marvin was born on June 30, 1956, the son of the late Marvin E. and Barbara T. (Erickson) Kaiser. He was raised in Estes Park, CO, and was a graduate of Estes Park High School and attended the Community College.

Following his father’s footsteps, Marvin was the proud owner/operator of Marvin C. Kaiser Trucking, Inc. for over 40 years. He enjoyed being in his truck on the open road, taking in the scenic beauty of the countryside. He was also a longtime member and supporter of the NRA. He will be missed by all who loved him.

Marvin is survived by his son, Justin Kaiser of Joliet; two grandchildren, Joshua Edward Larson and MacKenna Leanne Kaiser; one brother, Eric Kaiser of Fayetteville,

NC; and his sister Sonya (the late David S.) Binns of Estes Park, CO. He is preceded by his parents and his siblings, Thea Kaiser, Gregory Kaiser, and Risé Kaiser.

Visitation for Marvin C. Kaiser will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2020 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd.), Joliet, IL. In accordance with the Illinois guidelines, a 25 person capacity will be followed, face masks are required and social distancing will be observed. Funeral Services will be held privately by the family and cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
